Keynote

One of our most effective remedies for the bad effects of alcoholic beverages; spasmodic hiccough; delirium tremens. Day blindness; mist before eyes; pressure and smarting in eyeballs (Phos.). Muscular pains about margins of shoulder blades in women of sedentary employment, often burning in small spots (Agar., Phos.); from needle- work, typewriting, piano playing (Act.). Pains: stitches, sharp, shooting, neuralgic, myaligic or rheumatic in walls of chest, coming in paroxysms; excited or brought on by atmospheric changes; inflammatory; depending upon spinal irritation (Agar.). Pleurisy or pneumonia from sudden exposure to cold, while overheated, or vice versa (Acon., Arn.). Corns sensitive to touch, smart, burn (Salic. ac.). Acts especially upon the muscular tissue and skin, and its most characteristic effects are upon the chest walls, like pleurodynia. Bad effects of Alcohol; delirium tremens. Spasmodic hiccough. Hydrothorax. Shocks throughout the whole body. Sensitive to air and touch. Chronic sciatica.

Head

Irritable, pains in forehead and eyeballs. Creeping sensation in scalp. Pressing pain in forehead from within outward.

Eyes

Mind and Disposition

Angry mood and quarrelsome. Obtuseness of the senses. Vanishing of thought on reflection.

Head

Pressing headache in the forehead and on the vertex, as if pressed asunder, with pressure on the eyeballs and sleepiness ; worse in the evening or while entering a room from the cold air or vice versa. Congestion of blood to the head, sensation of fulness and enlargement of the head. Headache with nausea and sleepiness. The headache is caused or aggravated by a change of temperature.

Eyes

Sensation of soreness and smarting in the eyes and corners of the eyes. Pressure in the eyes.

Ears

Stitches in the ears (in the evening). Spasmodic sensation in and around the ears.

Nose

Redness and inflammatory swelling of the nose, with tension. Scabs in the nostrils.

Face

Dry heat in the face, with redness of the cheeks. Tingling in the face, especially on the nose and chin. Spasms of the lips.

Mouth and Throat

White saliva in the mouth, tasting like copper. Accumulation of tough mucus in the throat. Scraping burning in the throat, and on the roof of the mouth.

Stomach and Abdomen

Spasmodic hiccough. Nausea in the afternoon and evening, sometimes with headache. Sensation of soreness and burning in the pit of the stomach, especially to the touch. Sensation of soreness in the hypochondria, especially to the touch. Stitches in the region of the liver, extending up into the chest. Pulsations in the left hypochondrium. Colic and cutting pains in the abdomen, and when pressing on it the sensation as if every thing were sore and bruised. Burning soreness in the abdomen (chronic inflammation). Great tenderness of the abdomen to the touch.

Respiratory Organs

Breathing short and oppressed, with pains in the chest, and inclination to draw a long breath. Pains in the chest as if sore, as from subcutaneous ulceration, or rheumatic soreness of the intercostal muscles. Stitches in the chest (right side of the chest extending to the liver). The external soreness of the chest is aggravated by touch, motion, and from stretching the body. Adhesion of the lungs (after inflammation).

Back

Stitches in and between the shoulder-blades.

Extremities

Upper. Spasmodic, rheumatic pains in the arms. Stitches in the arms and hands. Herpes in the palms of the hands. Herpes or blue blisters on the fingers. Tingling in the fingers. Cold hands. Lower. Cracking in the joints (knee). Drawing pains in the thighs, extending downwards. Stinging and soreness in the feet and toes.

Generalities

Rheumatic and arthritic soreness, with stitches over the whole body. Trembling of the limbs, with dyspnœa (after anger). Twitching of the muscles. Epileptic attacks. Sudden weakness, with fainting.

Sleep

Sleeplessness often from dyspnœa, heat and ebullitions. Cannot lie on the side.

Fever

Pulse full, hard and rapid in the evening ; slower in the morning ; chill predominates, with heat in the face ; worse in the afternoon and evening. Chilliness and heat in the face after dinner. He feels the chilliness especially in the open air, and on the well-covered chest. The fever consists only of a chill. Heat in the evening, especially on the face ; frequently only on the right side, with cold hands (and feet). Heat, with internal chill at the same time. Perspiration very scanty, and only in the morning on waking.

Skin

Vesicular eruptions, as from burns. Burning, itching, dark-blue vesicles in clusters, and a herpetic scurf, like horn. Flat, burning, stinging ulcers, with ichorous discharge. Horny excrescences. Herpes over the whole body.

Conditions

Aggravation in the evening, and after eating ; from change of temperature, from touch, motion, from stretching the body.

Characteristics

The caustic and pain-producing properties of the Ranunculaceæ reach their highest expression in the Buttercups themselves. R. bulb . forms a constituent of some arsenical plaisters used to disperse cancers. R. bulb . was proved by Franz, and some effects of its external application have been observed, and results of inhaling the fumes whilst preparing the plant, or when it has been burned. The last caused headache, and in one instance epilepsy, followed by cachexia, nodous gout, headache, and death. In a child who was cured of ague with subsequent dropsy and hydrocele by applying R. bulb . to the wrist, ulcers of the fingers penetrating down to the flexor tendons were produced. In one prover the effect of expressing the juice with the fingers was to cause a long-lasting and recurrent eruption of vesicles on the fingers, a characteristic feature of which was the blueness of the vesicles and the horny nature of the scabs: "Small, deep, transparent, dark blue little elevated blisters of the size of an ordinary pin's head, crowded together in oval-shaped groups of the size of a shilling, with intolerable burning itching, emitting when opened a dark yellow lymph, afterwards becoming covered with a herpetic, horny scurf"; ─ a complete picture of herpes. The pains as well as the appearance of herpes are met with in the pathogenesis of R. bulb . ─ Pains in nerves, serous membranes, muscles, tendons, joints, eyes, and internal organs. The pains are lancinating, pressing and out-pressing, jerking and sticking, as if bruised with external sensitiveness. From the acrid vapour arising whilst the juice of the plant was being prepared these symptoms arose: "Smarting from eyes as from smoke in evening. Smarting in eyes, nose, and fauces; the eyes run and are very painful, so that he has to stop using them for half an hour because he cannot see anything; whites slightly inflamed; mucus runs in torrents from nose; fauces painful as if sore during an inspiration , less during deglutition " ─ symptoms which have led to many cures of hay-fever with R. bulb . The " < during inspiration" is part of the general sensitiveness of R. bulb . to air, to cold air, and to change, which is the grand keynote of the remedy, and which will serve to indicate it in a large number of the cases to which it is otherwise appropriate. Another keynote is sensitiveness to touch: sore, bruised sensation; soreness of parts affected. These symptoms make R. bulb . an important vulnerary. Hering mentions "hemeralopia" as having been cured with R. bulb . in a woman during pregnancy, and in her three-year old son. The word "hemeralopia" has been used to denote both day -blindness and night -blindness. Hering uses it in the latter (and rarer) sense, for he says of the woman, she "can see well during the day." H. C. Allen speaks of "day-blindness" as an indication, probably, translating "hemeralopia" literally. The concomitant symptoms were: Heat, biting, and pressure in eyes; redness of conjunctiva and lids, especially inner surface of lower lids; lachrymation; pus in canthi; pustules on eyes; eyes look weak; pupils dilated; candle-light appears as a bright circle; can see well during day." With the concomitant symptoms R. bulb . would probably cure either day- or night-blindness. "Pressure and smarting in eyeballs" is very characteristic. R. bulb . causes a very painful form of indigestion: White-coated tongue; bitter, sour, or sweetish taste, with accumulation of saliva; scraping burning in throat; spasmodic hiccough; spasmodic feeling in œsophagus and pharynx, ascending; eructations; nausea, pressure on sternum with laboured breathing; violent burning in cardiac end of stomach; hunger early in morning, thirst in evening." Conversely R. bulb . has proved one of the most effective agents for removing the bad effects of alcoholic drinks: hiccough; epileptiform attacks; delirium tremens. In the last case the quarrelsome, angry mood on the one hand, and the abject fear of ghosts on the other, further point to its appropriateness. Pains in liver and spleen region < by touch. In pleurisy, pleurodynia, intercostal neuralgia and spinal neuralgia and herpes the pains are ─ sharp, stitching, shooting, come in paroxysms, are induced by atmospheric changes, sudden exposure to cold or heat, < in wet, stormy weather; from touch, motion, or turning the body. The chest is particularly the seat of these pains. "Muscular pains about margins of shoulder-blades in women of sedentary employment, often burning in small spots, from needlework, typewriting, piano playing" (H. C. Allen). "Jerks and shocks; and sudden tearings in right forearm and between thumb and index finger while writing," point to R. bulb . as one of the remedies in writer's cramp and professional neuroses. Sensations of R. bulb . are: Confusion of head as if intoxicated. As if head would be enlarged. As if head pressed asunder. Hypochondria in lowest ribs painful as if bruised. As if everything in abdomen sore and bruised. As if there were subcutaneous ulceration. Burning in left side of chest; in region of short ribs. As if something tearing in chest. As if cold wet cloths applied. As if a full breath could not be drawn. As of a knife thrust through side and into back. Muscles as if pounded. The "cold-water feeling" occurred in a patient of Burnett's (quoted by A. C. Pope in a lecture reported H. W ., xviii. 308). A woman, 30, had had a fall two years before Burnett saw her, and ever since had this peculiar sensation: Whenever she goes out of doors she feels as if wet cloths were applied to three different parts of the anterior walls of thorax ─ both infraclavicular fossæ, and under left breast. Never felt indoors, but constant as long as she is out. Guided by this symptom, "Unusual chilliness of outer parts of chest when walking in open air," with the general " < in open air" and " < walking in open air," Burnett gave R. bulb . In two days the patient was better; in three weeks the sensation had completely gone and the general health very much improved. Dudgeon reports this case ( B. J. H ., xxiv. 160): Lady, 27, three weeks after confinement went for a drive. The day was cold, and an accident occurred to the carriage which frightened her. In the evening she had a slight rigor, and complained of pain in left side about sixth and seventh ribs. < Slightest movement; > sitting rather bent forward and leaning a little to the left. Pulse 120, no heat of skin. No signs of lung or pleural involvement. Bry ., and later Arn ., gave no relief, and for two days the symptoms grew worse; the patient having to be propped up with pillows, leaning forward and to the left, her head resting on her breast, not daring to breathe at all deeply. R. bulb . 1 relieved her in ten minutes, when she "felt a wrench in her side and the pain was gone." She was able to lie down, slept all night, and made a rapid recovery. There were some slight returns of pain, now on one side, now on the other, but R. bulb . Soon removed them. The symptoms are < by touch; by pressure (consequence of falls). < Motion; walking; lying down; lying on side (affected); sitting up; change of position; < evening and morning. < Change of temperature; sudden exposure to cold or heat; open air. < Inspiring. < When temperature becomes lower; draught of air; rainy, stormy weather. < After eating. < From anger.

Head

Mouth

Throat

Accumulation of much (tough) mucus in throat. ─ Spasmodic sensation, of something which ascends œsophagus and passes into throat. ─ Inflammatory burning pains (scraping burning) in throat and palate.

Appetite

Mawkish, sweetish taste, or taste of a sour bitterness. ─ Butter tastes too sweet. ─ Bitter, empyreumatic taste while eating, or after having eaten dry food. ─ Thirst augmented in afternoon. ─ Feeling of hunger and rumbling in stomach early in morning.

Stomach

Male Sexual Organs

Frequent erections towards morning and dizziness in head. ─ Emissions towards morning.

Chest

Back

Contusive rheumatic pains in whole trunk and between shoulder-blades. ─ Pain along whole inner edge of l. scapula, at times extending behind inferior angle and through l. chest.

Upper Limbs

Spasmodic (rheumatic) tearing, shooting, and jerking pains in arm (stitches in the arms and hands). ─ While writing lie feels sudden tearings (stitches, jerkings?) in r. forearm and between thumb and index finger. ─ Rheumatic pain in both elbow and shoulder-joints early in morning. ─ (Chronic stiffness of r. wrist with shoots up arm and down to thumb, which is also stiff. ─ R. T. C.). ─ Visible spasmodic contraction in region of styloid process of l. ulna. ─ Coldness of hands. ─ Itching in hands and fingers. ─ Crawling in single parts of fingers. ─ Tetters on palms of hands. ─ Tingling in fingers. ─ Tetters, blisters, and ulcers on fingers; penetrating down to flexor tendons. ─ Shining red, loose swelling of fingers, with inflammation, &c., changing to flat, spreading ulcers. ─ Cauliflower-like wart on outer side of terminal phalanx of r. thumb. ─ Pain under nail of r. index finger as from a splinter.

Lower Limbs

Drawing pains along thighs (extending downwards). ─ Spasmodic, piercing pains, and itching in middle of thighs. ─ Great weakness in lower limbs when walking, forenoons. ─ Cracking in knee-joints. ─ Painful stiffness in joints of feet. ─ Cramps in instep. ─ Pulsative lancinations in heels (l., when standing). ─ Pain in heels as if pinched by boots (when boots were off). ─ Violent stitches in l. fourth toe. ─ Sore pain and stitches in tips of toes; between the toes; on dorsa of toes. ─ Pains as from excoriation and lancinations in toes. ─ Corns sensitive to touch, smart or burn.

Generalities

Sleep

Inclination to sleep during the day. ─ Retarded sleep and nocturnal sleeplessness, frequently from oppression of chest (dyspnœa), heat, and ebullition of blood, but mostly without any assignable cause. ─ Frequent awakening in night and remaining long awake. ─ Waking early in morning. ─ Inability to remain lying on side. ─ Anxious dreams of danger (on the water), or vivid and lascivious dreams.

Fever

Pulse: full, hard, and rapid in the evening; slower in the morning. ─ Attacks of fever after a meal or in evening, characterised principally by chilliness, with pains in abdomen and other distressing symptoms. ─ Heat in head, with coldness in hands. ─ Shivering in evening, with heat in face. ─ He feels the chilliness, esp. in the open air, and on the well-covered chest. ─ The fever consists only of a chill. ─ Heat in evening, esp. on face; frequently only on r. side, with cold hands (and feet). ─ Heat, with internal chill at same time. ─ Perspiration very scanty, and only in morning on waking.

Sensorium

Inner head

Hearing and ears

Sticking in right ear in region of tympanum.

Smell and nose

Redness and inflammatory swelling of nose, with tension.
Scabs in nostrils ; sore nose.
Hay fever ; smarting in eyes ; eyelids burn and feel sore ; nose stuffed up, especially toward evening, with pressure at root of nose and tingling and crawling sensation within its cavity ; sometimes this sensation attacks posterior nares,
causing patient to hawk and swallow and endeavor in every way to scratch affected part ; hoarseness ; sharp, stitching pains in and about chest ; general muscular soreness ; neck of bladder may be affected, producing some burning in passing water.

Upper face

Dry heat in face, with redness of cheeks, evenings.
Tingling in face, especially on nose and chin.
Vesicular eruption on face, as from a burn ; smarts as if scalded ; eruption in clusters. θ Eczema.

Lower face

Spasms of lips.

Inner mouth

White saliva in mouth, tasting like copper.

Palate and throat

Much viscid phlegm in throat.
Scraping, burning in throat and roof of mouth, inflammatory.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Increased thirst in afternoon.

Eating and drinking

One of our most effective agents for the removal of bad effects of alcoholic beverages ; hiccough ; epileptiform attacks ; delirium tremens.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Frequent eructations.
Spasmodic hiccough. θ Alcoholism.
Nausea in afternoon, sometimes with headache.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Pressure in pit of stomach.
Violent burning in region of cardiac orifice of stomach.
Sensation of soreness and burning in pit of stomach ; < from touch.
Neuralgia of stomach ; attacks irregular, coming on without special cause ; pain in pit of stomach, with distressing burning and soreness ; wanted the clothing all loose and to bend back, with great restlessness and some jaundice ; attacks preceded by itching of palms
of hands inducing scratching.

Hypochondria

Sensation of soreness in hypochondria, especially to touch.
Stitches in region of liver, extending into chest.
Pulsations in left hypochondrium.
In evening, hypochondria and lowest ribs feel painful as if bruised.
Jaundice ; itching of body, especially of palms of hands.

Abdomen and loins

Rumbling and movements in abdomen.
Stitches in left side of abdomen, in forenoon when walking.
Stitching with pressure, in right side of abdomen, in region of last true rib, arresting breathing, with stitches and pressure on top of right shoulder, when walking after having been seated.
Sore pain and stitches in left side of abdomen, immediately after supper.
Violent stitches from left lumbar region transversely through abdomen, especially below umbilicus and toward right groin, immediately after dinner.
Colic and cutting pains in abdomen when pressing on it, sensation as if everything were sore and bruised.
Burning soreness in abdomen.
Great tenderness of abdomen to touch.

Stools and rectum

Diarrhœa for a week ; colorless, watery, painless, a little frothy, generally coming in one gush, about six times daily.
Acute abdominal and thoracic pains following dysentery ; chronic serous discharges of dysentery, with stabbing pains in abdomen and chest.

Urinary organs

Ulcers in bladder.

Female sexual organs

Ovarian neuralgia, chronic cases, always excited by atmospheric change.
Leucorrhœa, at first mild, then acrid, corroding.

Respiration

Heavy, short breathing, in evening ; must take a deep breath frequently, with burning and fine stitches in left side of chest.

Inner chest and lungs

Oppression of chest, with much weeping in evening with sore pain in eyes, especially right ; as after deep chagrin, had to take a deep breath frequently.
Pressure and tightness across lower part of chest, with fine stitches which seem to be felt in outer parts of chest first, but then extend deep into chest, now in right now in left side ; < moving, stooping, or taking an inspiration ; in evening when walking or standing, in
open air or in room.
Pressing pain in outer parts of chest.
Violent pains in chest whole forenoon.
Pains in chest, stitches in right side and pressure in middle chest, continuing uninterruptedly almost all day, with painful inspiration.
Pain in morning as if bruised, or as if one had been lying in a wrong position, in region of lowest true rib, l. side.
Pain in left side of chest, in morning, in region of pectoralis major, near axilla, < during motion.
Early in morning, while walking, feels a sticking in region of fifth and sixth left ribs, with great sensitiveness to touch and debility.
Sticking pain in left chest and as if there were subcutaneous ulceration, < from motion.
Stitches in interior of left side of chest, when walking in open air, in region of nipple ; the stitches disappear when he continues to walk, after which a pain is felt below last true rib in right side of abdomen.
Violent sticking pain above left nipple, near axilla, in morning, when rising ; dare not move his arm or raise it ; dare not even raise trunk lest he should scream with pain ; has to sit or stand stooping, with head and chest forward to left side.
Sticking pain in right side of chest, in region of fifth and sixth ribs, in forenoon.
Painful soreness under short ribs of left side, especially when moving trunk, for several days.
Violent pressure and sensation as if bruised over whole l. side of chest, immediately after rising, in morning ; every movement of shoulder causes pain ; pain spreads over whole chest, with shortness of breath, is unable to speak long sentences on account of want of breath.
Pain as if bruised in region of short ribs, with pain in back, lassitude and ill-humor.
Pressing and pushing in lowest part of right side of chest, toward liver, in forenoon.
Pain in chest and restless nights, continuing for weeks.
Stitches, neuralgic, myalgic, or rheumatic pains in chest.
Chronic soreness on pressure within thorax or abdomen, as from subcutaneous ulceration.
Chronic pains in chest, frequently extending toward liver or from liver into chest.
Chronic cases of internal pains, especially over region of diaphragm ; inframammary pains of women.
Diaphragmitis ; sharp, shooting pains, pains from hypochondria and epigastrium through to back.
Pleurisy and hydrothorax.
Pneumonia resulting from sudden exposure to cold while overheated, or vice versa ; cheeks bright red ; tongue clean ; respiration difficult, short, oppressed, accompanied by loud rales ; dry heat ; turgescence of skin without sweat ; early prostration, so
great at onset that he can hardly walk ; small, rapid pulse, with great excitement of heart and circulation ; nausea, even fainting when sitting up and on motion.
Left-sided pneumonia with pleurisy ; great soreness just below left nipple on drawing a breath, with a sensation as of something tearing, and occasional pleuritic stitches radiating from that point over whole left side of chest, which was quite
sensitive to touch ; appetite and strength failing from effects of incessant pain ; there was but slight cough ; while drawing an unusually full breath a sudden sense of tearing in affected part of chest, followed by expectoration of about two ounces of blood.
Small sore spot, as from subcutaneous ulceration ; after pneumonia.
Acute thoracic pains after pneumonia or pleuritis, suggestive of adhesions.
Pain about lungs from adhesions after pleurisy.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Pulse full, hard, rapid in evening, slower in morning.

Outer chest

Whenever she goes out of doors a sensation as if she had cold wet cloths applied to three different parts of anterior wall of thorax, viz., in both infraclavicular fossæ and just under left breast ; sensation comes on at once on going out of
doors, is constant as long as she is out, and disappears immediately on going into house ; it prevents her from conversing with any one while out ; after a fall two and a half years ago.
Stitches about chest in every change of weather.
External painfulness of whole trunk.
External soreness of chest and abdomen, < from touch, motion and coughing, accompanied by tightness of chest as if a full breath could not be drawn on account of acute pain and mental anxiety.
Chest feels sore, bruised ; < from touch, motion, or turning body. θ Pleurodynia.
Sharp, shooting pains about chest. θ Intercostal neuralgia.
Acute pain principally in shoulder, axilla and mamma, so severe in breast that she dreaded cancer. θ Intercostal neuralgia.
After overstraining himself threw up some blood ; it rose into mouth at night or after exertion, and seemed to draw from right side about hip ; blood-spitting ceased, but more or less pain continued in that part ever since, and down into arm toward insertion of pectoral
muscle ; the breast swells the size of hand and is tender to touch and when arm is moved ; < from cold, singing, hard work ; feels much depressed, wishes to lie down and give up. θ Pleurodynia.
Slight rigor ; pain in left side about sixth or seventh ribs, increasing during night and following day ; sat bent forward in bed and leaning toward left side ; slightest motion caused intense pain like a knife thrust into side and through back ; intense dread of any
movement ; is afraid to take a full breath ; unable to lie down for a moment ; could not bear least touch on affected side ; screamed if compelled to make least movement ; pulse 120, small, weak ; much exhausted by want of sleep and the awkward position. θ Pleurodynia.
Pleurodynia, rheumatic, myalgic or neuralgic.
Rheumatism of several months standing caused by catching cold during a sea voyage ; pains confined almost entirely to trunk ; chest and abdomen feel bruised ; on least motion pains become cutting and sharp.

Neck and back

Pain along inner edge of left scapula, often extending below its inferior angle or through lower half of left side of thorax.
Stitches in and between shoulder-blades.
Muscular pains about lower margin of shoulder-blades in women who follow sedentary employments ; pain burning, often over only a small space, greatly < by long-continued needlework or writing.
Pain in back, lassitude, and pain as if bruised in region of short ribs, with ill-humor.
Stitches in right lumbar region when walking, with a slight burning sensation.
Pain depending upon spinal irritation.

Upper limbs

Spasmodic, rheumatic pains in arms.
Stitches in arms and hands.
Jerking pain in right upper arm.
Sudden tearings in right forearm and between thumb and index finger ; while writing.
Herpes or blisterlike eruption in palms of hands ; blue blisters on fingers.
Cold hands.
Frequent tingling in single parts of fingers.
Cauliflower-like wart on outer side of terminal phalanx of right thumb.

Lower limbs

Great weakness in lower limbs, in forenoon, when walking.
Sciatica especially in women ; pains < moving about, yet not better lying down ; < in rainy, stormy weather ; stitching-burning pains, radiating from dorsal region of spine.

Severe pain on inner aspect of left knee, very sore to touch, point of pain easily covered with finger end ; sometimes > from motion < from pressure ; knee joint cracked on stretching limb ; also sore spot on abdomen about two inches above navel and same
distance left of median line ; it was sore as a boil, but no external evidence ; < from pressure.
Stinging and soreness in feet and toes.
Pulsative stitches in left heel, when standing, in forenoon.
Corns sensitive to touch, smart and burn.
Chilblains.
Stump of amputated leg a mass of chilblains, many places being much ulcerated ; intense pain and itching, preventing rest at night.

Trembling of limbs, with oppression of breathing, after fright or anger ; < in evening, and sometimes after eating, from change of temperature, especially from heat to cold.
Intercostal or spinal neuralgial ; rheumatic or neuralgic pleurodynia.
Great depression of spirits, almost amounting to suicidal mania ; constant twitching and jerking of muscles of neck and of face and chest contiguous of this region ; muscles of back, between shoulders, also contributed to increase this
jerking movement ; the principal direction of the movement was to bring chin directly, or from side to side, toward chest ; sterno-mastoid and sternohyoid muscles frequently drawn into ridges by tonic contractions of their fibres ; < from talking and presence of
individuals ; while talking, if shoulders were constantly moved up and down, the spasm was considerably > and the articulation easier ; marked indisposition to stand up for any length of time, also to walking, even about house. θ Irritability

Sleep

Falls asleep late in evening and wakes several times at night, not from any pain, but because he is not sleepy.

Tissues

Inflammation of serous membranes, particularly of pleura or peritoneum ; acute stabbing pains in chest in case of pleuritis ; effusion of serum, with great anxiety, dyspnœa and distress.
Rheumatism of muscles, particularly in muscles about trunk ; intercostal rheumatism ; muscles sore to touch, feel bruised as if they had been pounded.

Generals

This buttercup gives off an acrid ethereal vapor very poisonous to such as are sensitive to it, and has been many times mistaken for Rhus poisoning.

This common field buttercup is not used as often as it is indicated, and it must be that it is not as well known as many other remedies. It is a rheumatic remedy of great usefulness when the chest muscles are involved. Pain in the spinal nerves, pleura and costal muscles always with extreme soreness. It is as sensitive to motion as Bryonia, and to the cold, damp weather as Dulcamara.

It has sudden weakness even to fainting, and it has cured epilepsy. It is extremely excitable, and resembles the much broken state of sensitive invalids; hence it has complaints from fright and vexation.

Its complaints are worse in the evening and after any change in the weather, especially from warm to cold. The evening aggravations are quite marked; the headache, ear pain, the nasal symptoms, the fever, soreness in the short ribs, dyspnœa, oppression of chest and heart, tightness of chest, increased pulsation, trembling, chilliness, are all worse in the evening. He is extremely sensitive to cold and cold, open air. Cold air brings on headaches, rheumatism, neuralgia of chest, spine and ovaries, vertigo.

Sudden exposure while overheated will bring on febrile symptoms, pleurisy or pneumonia. After exposure to cold air, his chest muscles are sore as if bruised. I)raft of cold air causes sore pains in many parts.

He is extremely sensitive to rainy and stormy weather. He is sore and bruised in many parts. Stitching pains in liver, ears, chest, abdomen, shoulder and other joints, spine, lumbar region to abdomen, between the shoulders in the back, stitching, burning pains radiating from the dorsal spine.

Burning pains in cardiac orifice of stomach; in pit of stomach, neck of bladder, in cornea; in eruptions; in ulcers. Pressing pain in forehead; vertex; eyes; temples; root of nose; pit of stomach; shoulder; across the lower part of chest; middle of chest. It has creeping crawling, tingling. Inflammation of the pleura with dropsy of adhesion. With pleural effusion it is a very useful remedy when there is extreme soreness along the ribs, especially the lower ribs. It has cured lupus and epithelioma. jaundiced.

Mind

It has great depression of spirits and desire to die.

Fear of ghosts and very irritable, even quarrelsome.

Confusion of mind.

Vertigo when going into the cold air.

Sensation of enlargement of the head.

Head

Cerebral hyperemia with heat of the face.

Headache with change of temperature, pressing headache in forehead and vertex worse when changing temperature, either to cold or warm room. Violent pains over right eye, worse lying, and better when walking and standing. All other pains worse from motion. This is a notable exception.

Eyes

Pressure and burning in the eyes.

Great pains in the eye, especially the right. Soreness and burning in right lower lid. Burning and soreness in outer canthus of the right eye. Bluish-black herpetic vesicles over the eye. it has cured hemiopia during pregnancy.

Stitching pains in the ears, especially the right, worse in the evening.

It has cured hay fever with burning in eyes and itching of the soft palate (like Wyethia), worse in the evening, pressing in the root of the nose. The skin of the nose is red much inflamed.

It has caused vesicular eruption on the face with great burning. It has caused epithelioma of the face. Prickling of the face, nose and, chin. Twitching of the lips.

Burning and soreness and redness in the throat, smarting and itching of the soft palate.

There is much thirst in the afternoon. It hag cured many times the weak and tottering condition of patients suffering from prolonged use, of stimulants, such as whisky and brandy. It is a great remedy for weak and tottering condition of patients suffering from prolonged use delirium tremens when he is besotted, has hiccoughs and is more or less convulsive. Epileptiform convulsions from alcoholic liquors. The hiccough is violent and convulsive Frequent eructations.

Burning in the stomach and especially in the region of the cardiac orifice. Stomach is very sensitive to touch. Paroxysms of neuralgia of the stomach.

Sore bruised feeling in the short ribs, stitching pains in the liver, jaundiced. Soreness in liver on deep pressure; symptoms worse in the evening.

In the abdomen there is much flatulence, colic, burning and great soreness on pressure. Stitching pain in right side of abdomen under the ribs. The pains are much worse from motion, breathing and walking. Many stitching pains in abdomen. It has a watery diarrhoea and dysentery. It has herpes zoster with violent pains.

Excoriating leucorrhoea and sharp pains in the ovaries every cold change in the weather, from motion, and in the evening.

Chest

Heavy, short breathing with oppression of chest in the evening. Sighing breathing. Pressure and constriction of the chest. Pressing pains in the walls of the chest. Violent stitching pains in the chest walls. Stitching pains in the region of fifth and sixth ribs. Painful soreness on touch or pressure on the floating ribs. Rheumatic pains in the chest.

Chronic costal rheumatism. Soreness describing the attachments of the diaphragm. Inflammation of the diaphragm and pleura. Hydrothorax pains in chest from adhesions of the pleura. Sensitive as if inner parts were adhered. Pain worse from motion, in cold air, from becoming cold, on inspiration. Sensation of a cold wet cloth on going into cold air. Stitching pains every change of the weather from warm to cold. Sore spots here and there on the ribs.

Pain in the region of heart from motion and inspiration and lying on left side. Rheumatic swelling of pectoral muscles with extreme soreness to touch. Pleurodynia with most violent cutting pains from inspiration, pressure, turning the body and cold air. Pulse full, hard and rapid in the evening and slow in the morning.

Back

Sore spots in the spine.

Pain along the inner margin of the left scapula. Stitching pains in the spine between the scapulae. Pains in lower and inner margin of scapula in shoemakers, needle workers and writers from sitting bent. One scapula often becomes adhered to the back and it is immovable, and later burning pain comes on. Weak spine and great lassitude. Vesicular eruptions form upon the back and chest with blue contents, with severe pain.

Limbs

Rheumatic pains, paroxysmal in character in the upper limbs.

Stitching pains along the nerves in arms and hands. Tearing pains in forearm and hand. The pains are worse from cold, and worse from Motion. Bluish vesicles in the palms and fingers. Seed warts on the, thumb.

Great weakness in lower limbs in forenoon. Stitching burning from the spine along the sciatic nerve in cold, wet weather and in stormy weather, worse from motion and in cold air. Drawing pain in the thighs. Rheumatic pain in knees, stinging and soreness in foot and toes. Corns very painful, sore to touch, sting and burn. He suffers from complaints like chilblains.

He is late falling asleep. Sleepless from difficult breathing, from heat, and orgasms of blood.

Dark blue vesicles upon the skin. Horny scurf forms after the vesicles have opened. It has been used for vesicular eruptions; for burns; for herpes zoster; for pemphigus; for eczema. Flat burning, stinging, ulcers. Horn-like excrescences.
