Keynote

For light-haired, irresolute persons of a phelgmatic temperament. Eczema and itching eruptions after vaccinations. Hypochondriacal and despondent; indifferent to everything and every one; angry at trifles and perfectly harmless things, but is soon sorry for it. Toothache: in carious teeth (Kreos.); feel elongated, dull pain when biting on them and when touched with tongue, < at night; > with mouth open and drawing in air; roots decay (rev. or Mer.). Headache, violent after slight vexation; painful on the slightest touch; right sided. The head is covered with thick, leather-like crust, under which thick and white pus collects here and there; hair is glued and matted together; pus after a time is ichorous, becomes offensive and breeds vermin. Ulcers with thick, yellowish-white scabs, under which thick, yellow pus collects. Vesicles appear around the ulcers, itch violently, burn like fire (Hep.); shining, fiery-red areola around. Linen or charpie sticks to the ulcers, they bleed when it is torn away. Eczema: intolerable itching, < in bed and from touch; copious, serous exudation. Neuralgic burning pains after zona. Bones, especially long bones, inflamed, swollen; nightly pains going from above downwards; after abuse of Merc., after venerial diseases; caries, exostosis, tumors soften from within out. Pain in periosteum of long bones < at night in bed, least touch, in damp weather (Mer., Phyt.). Child scratches face continually, which is covered with blood; eruptions moist; itching worse at night; inflammatory redness of face.

Aggravation

Cold air; cold washing; at night; touch or motion; bad effects of mercury or alcohol. Epidemics occurring in January or February often call for Mezereum.

General

The remedy is often useful in cases of very violent neuralgic pains about the teeth or face, particularly if the pain be in the left bone, running toward the ear; also neuralgic pains at night in the teeth. Affections of any kind appearing on the external head, principally right side; teeth in the left side; forehead; shin bone. Collection of water in the mouth, i.e., "mouth waters." Urine with real flakes, which float about on top of the urine. Subsultus tendinum, as in typhoid fever, etc., when by putting the fingers on the wrist or on other parts of the body, the tendons are left to jump and jerk. Burning, darting sensation in the muscles, like fire darting through them.

Head

Face

Red. Eruption around mouth, with coryza.

Stomach

Desire for ham-fat. Burning in tongue, extending to stomach. Mouth waters. Nausea felt in throat; better, eating. Chronic gastritis; burning, corroding pain; nausea, vomiting, chocolate color. Gastric ulcer with much burning.

Abdomen

Swelling of glands with large abdomen in children. Pressure in inguinal ring. Flatulent colic, with shivering and difficult respiration.

Rectum

Constipation after confinement. Prolapse of rectum. Diarrhœa, with small, white particles. Green discharges. Constipation, with hepatic and uterine inertia. Constriction of anus; stitches and prolapse of rectum.

Urine

Red flakes float on top of urine. Hot, bloody Biting, burning in forepart of urethra at the close of micturition. Hæmaturia preceded by cramp pain in the bladder, After urinating, a few drops of blood are passed.

Female

Menses too frequent, soon, profuse. Leucorrhœa like albumen; very corroding.

Male

Enlargement of testicles. Violent sexual desire. Gonorrhœa, with hæmaturia.

Respiratory

Soreness and burning in bones of thorax. Constriction across chest. Cough; worse; eating, irritation lower than can be reached, on taking a warm drink.

Extremities

Pain in neck and back; worse, motion and at night; intolerant of all touch. Pain and burning in tibia and long bones. Legs and feet go to sleep. Pain in hip and knee.

Skin

Eczema; intolerable itching; chilliness with pruritus; worse in bed. Ulcers itch and burn, surrounded by vesicles and shining, fiery-red areola. Zona, with burning pain. Pains in the long bones, especially the tibia are sometimes greatly relieved by this remedy. I once cured a very obstinate case of facial neuralgia with it. The pains were brought on, or greatly aggravated, by eating, and the only relief he could get was to hold that side of his face as near as he could to a hot stove. Hot cloths, wet or dry, or any other heat applied did not relieve.

Mind and Disposition

Restlessness when alone and longing for company. Hypochondriac mood, with low spirits and weeping. Indifference about every thing and ever body around him. Aversion to talk, it seems to him to be hard work to utter one word. Disposed to reproach others or to quarrel. Irresolute. Unable to recollect, the mind is easily confused.

Head

Head feels dull or as if intoxicated. Headache with chilliness, worse in the open air. Headache in the temples, and sides of the head after an exertion and from talking much. Violent headache and great sensitiveness to the least contact after a slight anger. The head is covered with a thick leather-like crust, under which thick and white pus collects here and there, and the hair is glued together. On the head great elevated white scabs, under which ichor collects in great quantity, and which begins to be offensive and breed vermin. The scabs on the head look chalky and extend to the eyebrows and the nape of the neck. Burning, biting itching on the scalp, principally on the vertex ; when scratching the locality changes but the itching, becomes worse ; this is followed by very sore boils and humid eruptions, worse at night and when lying down. Pain in the bones of the scalp (on both sides) with swelling and caries, great sensitiveness to contact, cold, motion, worse in the evening. Numbness of the scalp, with drawing pain in it, generally only on one side ; worse from cold, contact and in the evening. Ameliorated by heat. Dandruff, white, dry.

Eyes

Inclination to wink with the eyes. Dryness in the eyes, with pressure in them ; the eyes feel too large. Twitching of the muscles around the eyes. Lachrymation, with smarting in the eyes. Staring at one spot.

Ears

Itching behind the ears, scratching causes small elevations, they are scratched off and feel sore. The ears feel as if they were too open and as if air were pouring into them, or at ; if the tympanum were exposed to the cold air, with a desire to bore with the fingers into the ear. Otalgia.

Nose

Twitching (visible) on the root of the nose. Fluent coryza, soreness of the nose, scabs in the nose, and soreness and burning of the upper lip. The sense of smell is diminished, with dryness of the nose.

Face

Gray, earthy complexion. Frequent, troublesome twitching of the muscles in the middle of the right cheek. Dull cramp pain and benumbing pressure in the right malar bone, extending to the temples. Swelling of the lower lip, with rhagades. The child scratches the face constantly ; it becomes covered with blood. Face and forehead hot and red, with great restlessness and peevishness. In the night the child scratches its face, so that the bed is covered with blood in the morning ; and the face is covered with a scab, which the child keeps constantly tearing off anew, and on the spots thus left raw, large fat pustules form. The ichor from the scratched face excoriates other parts. A honey-like scab around the mouth. The skin of the face is of a deep inflammatory redness, the eruption is humid and fat.

Mouth and Throat

Stinging toothache, which extends to the malar bones and temples. The teeth feel dull, and elongated. Boring, stinging in decayed teeth, extending to the malar bone. The teeth decay suddenly. The teeth pain when touched by the tongue. Burning in the mouth and throat. Burning of the pharynx and œsophagus. Constriction of the pharynx, the food presses on the part during deglutition.

Stomach and Abdomen

Beer tastes bitter and causes vomiting. Increased appetite noon and evening. Sensation of nausea in the throat. Sensation as if the posterior part of the throat were full of mucus, the same after hawking. Unusual longing for ham fat. Burning in the stomach, mouth and throat, relieved by eating (swallowing the food). Dull pain in the region of the spleen. Many short, fetid, flatulent discharges, especially before the stool.

Stool and Anus

Constipation, stool dark brown, in knots, very hard balls, with great straining but not painful. Stools soft, brown, smelling sour. Soft stool in the evening, fermented stool, not fully digested smelling very offensive or sour. Excessive diarrhœa (small stools) with intolerable colic. Brown feces, containing some white glistening bodies. Chill before and after the stool. During the stool, prolapsus ani with constriction of the anus, which makes it very difficult to replace it. Before and after the stool, creeping in the rectum as from ascarides. Stitch in the rectum upwards (in the afternoon).

Urinary Organs

Decreased secretion of urine. In the morning and forenoon, frequent discharges of large quantities of pale urine. The urine becomes flaky and has a red sediment. Hæmaturia. Sticking in the kidney, and pain as if torn. After micturition, itching at the prepuce.

Sexual Organs

Men. Discharge of mucus from the urethra. Heat and swelling of the penis. Violent erections and increased sexual desire. Painless swelling of the scrotum. Swelling of the testicles. Women. Menses too frequent and lasting too long. Leucorrhœa, resembling albumen, malignant, corroding.

Respiratory Organs

Dyspnœa, as if the chest were contracted, and as if there were adhesion of the lungs. Sensation of constriction of the (muscles of the) chest. Desire to draw a long breath. The chest feels too tight on stooping. Burning and dryness in the trachea, with hoarseness. Soreness and burning in the bones of the thorax. Stitches in the (right side of the) chest, worse from drawing a long breath. Spasmodic, violent hooping-cough, caused by an irritation in the larynx, extending to the chest, expectoration in the morning of a yellow, albuminous, tough mucus, tasting salt. The cough is worse in the evening, till midnight ; or day and night, with tension over the thorax ; when eating or drinking any thing hot (has to cough till the food is vomited up) ; from drinking beer.

Back

Rheumatic pains in the muscles of the shoulder-blade ; they feel tense and swollen, and prevent motion.

Extremities

Upper. The right arm feels sprained on top of the shoulder. The right hand cold (while writing), the left warm (in a warm room). Cold hands. Trembling of the right hand. The tips of the fingers are powerless, cannot hold anything. The hands (and feet) go to sleep continually. Lower. The right hip-joint feels, sprained on walking. Twitching of the whole right leg. Pain in the hip, the leg is shortened. The whole chin is covered with elevated white scabs. Cracking in the right knee, when rising in the morning. The legs and feet go to sleep. Stitches in the toes, of the right foot. Pain in the periosteum of the long bones, especially the tibia, worse at night in bed, and then the least touch is intolerable.

Generalities

Tension in the muscles. Twitching in the muscles. Burning of the internal parts, with external chilliness. Sensitiveness to the cold air. Sensitiveness to washing with cold water in the morning.

Sleep

Great inclination to sleep from debility. Sleep disturbed by violent pain in the face. Awakens after midnight, from vivid dreams and with night-mare.

Fever

Pulse full and hard ; in the evening a accelerated ; intermitting at times. Chill predominates even in the warm room. Chill with thirst and desire for heat. Chill from the upper arms, extending to the back and legs. Heat in bed, mostly in the head. Perspiration during sleep, following the chill, without previous heat. Intermittent fever; chill over the whole body, accompanied by asthmatic contraction and tightness of the chest, in front and back. During the cold stage, a peculiar thirst ; dryness in the back part of the mouth, with accumulation of saliva in the fore part without any desire to drink. During the cold stage, drowsiness in the warm room.

Skin

Inflammation and swelling of the bones, rachitis, caries. Itching in the evening when in bed, aggravated and changed to burning by touch or by scratching. Sensitiveness to touch. Ulcers : with an areola, sensitive and easily bleeding (when removing the linen, which sticks to the ulcer), painful at night, the pus tends to form an adherent scab, under which a quantity of pus collects, burning and stinging with inflammation. Vesicles around the ulcers, itching violently and burning like fire. Desquamation of the whole body. Suppuration after inflammations.

Conditions

Aggravation in the evening, at night, from contact, and motion. One side of the body is generally affected. Bad consequences from the abuse of mercury. Amelioration when walking in the open air.

Characteristics

An idea of the virulence of this poison may be gathered from a case reported in Allen's Appendix : A pale girl, 14, having been advised to use Mezereum leaves to make her fat and rosy, went into the woods and used them freely on her cheeks and surrounding parts. Burning soon set in, the whole face swelled enormously, especially nose, eyelids, and hairy scalp. Severe and painful sneezing set in, delirium, dull, unbearable, pressing pains in forehead, a nauseous dryness in throat and constant irritation to dry cough. The face soon showed the appearance of erysipelas bullosum; nostrils closed, she could only breathe through mouth; febrile pulse, burning urine. Oil and compresses were applied, and after the second day desquamation occurred in large pieces. But health did not return. Debility, loss of vitality, mental depression bordering on idiocy followed; then typhoid fever, lasting fully three months, to which she finally succumbed. Poisoning has also been observed from the effects of the berries: dryness and burning of throat and stomach; intense thirst; narcotism, coma, convulsions of eyes and upper limbs were observed. In a child of four, poisoned with the berries, these symptoms occurred: Swollen lips; tongue furred and swollen, protruding, swallowing difficult. The tongue remained quite raw when other symptoms had passed away ( H. W ., xxii. 466). Hahnemann records this: A robust man took Mezereum bark for some ailment, and continued it after the ailment disappeared. Soon, unbearable itching set in all over body, could not sleep a moment. Thirty-six hours after discontinuing it the itching was still increasing, then a few grains of Camphor removed it. Mezereum is the vegetable analogue of, and is one of the most important antidotes to, Mercurius . Merc . and Mez . antidote one another. Mind, skin, eyes, mucous membranes and bones are affected in much the same way by both; they have the same sensitiveness to damp, cold, and warmth, and the same nightly aggravations. Nash mentions an exception to the < by warmth. In a man whom he cured with Mez . of obstinate facial neuralgia, the pains were brought on or greatly < by eating , and the only relief the man could get was by holding the painful side close to a hot stove . Only radiated heat was of any use, hot cloths, wet or dry, gave no relief whatever. Mez . affects the long bones more markedly than others, and the least touch is intolerable; but it has, like Merc ., a strong affinity for the facial bones and teeth. With Mez . the decay attacks the roots or sides rather than the crowns (which Merc . attacks). The toothache is < at night, < by touch, even with the tongue, and is > by holding the mouth open and drawing in air. Neuralgia about the eyes; the pains radiate and shoot downward, and if there is in addition a sensation in the eye itself as if a cold wind were blowing in it the indications will be very strong. Mez . is one of Hahnemann's anti-psorics, and it meets many psoric manifestations. Carroll Dunham has recorded ( Science of Therapeutics , 462) a notable case of deafness, due to suppressed psora. A Youth, 17, deaf since four, and incapacitated thereby, secludes himself and broods over his trouble. Membranes thickened. At the age of three he had an eruption of thick, whitish scabs, hard, almost horny, covering the whole scalp. There were fissures through which exuded on pressure a thick, yellowish pus, often very offensive. Much itching and disposition to tear off the scabs with the finger-nails, < at night. The treatment (allopathic) was vigorous: A tar cap was placed on the head, and when firmly adherent to the scabs was violently tom off, scabs and all, leaving the whole scalp raw. This was painted with a saturated solution of Arg. nit . The eruption did not reappear, but from that time the child was deaf. The eruption was the very counterpart of an eruption observed in a proving by Wehle. Mez . 30, three globules in a powder of sugar of milk, was given on each of these dates ─ February 3, March 1, and September 28, 1857, and January 26, 1858. Improvement set in slowly after the first dose, which was only repeated when the effect of each preceding dose seemed to be exhausted. Finally the hearing was for all practical purposes completely restored. The action of Mez . in catarrhal cases is illustrated in another case ( Amer. Hom ., xxi. 417). Miss M. R., 39, brunette, had chronic catarrh. The left ear had long been deaf, and the right had begun to fail. There were noises in the ears. Drum membranes retracted and scarred. The symptoms were: Excessive sensitiveness to the air, even of a fan, and occasionally a sensation as if air went through to the throat. Mucous membrane of naso-pharynx granular and irritable. A dose of Mez . given before each meal entirely relieved the symptoms. The ulcers of Mez . have thick, yellowish, white scabs. Vesicles appear now and then, and itch and burn. Lint dressings stick to them, and when they are torn away bleeding occurs. Burning vesicles on the sides of the fingers; and ulcers on finger-joints. With eczema there is intolerable itching, < in bed and from touch. Vaccinal eczemas are frequently of the Mez . type. Mez . is often of great service in herpes zoster, both during the eruption and for the neuralgia remaining after, especially if the pains are burning. In a lecture on Mez . by T. S. Hoyne ( Med. Vis ., xiii. 65) are collected many cases illustrating the action of the remedy. Here is a mental case (in a woman) treated by W. E. Payne: No rest when alone; wants company. Ideas vanish while talking; cannot repeat what has been learned by heart. Looks through the window for hours without being conscious of objects around . Does not know what she is about; forgets what she is about to utter; looks ill-humoured, pale, wretched, fallen away. Apprehensiveness at pit of stomach, as when expecting some very unpleasant intelligence . All symptoms relieved in a single night by Mez . 20. (I give the italics as in the original.) Among neuralgic cases are the following: ( 1 ) Man, 28, violent neuralgia, boring pain in left lower jaw-bone, extending to temple and ear. < Night, > from pressure. Mez . 3 relieved in two hours (S. R. Geiser). ( 2 ) H. G., stout, healthy-looking negro, left supra-orbital neuralgia recurring daily at 9 a.m., increasing till noon, declining till 4 p.m., when it entirely departed leaving no soreness behind. Pain = flow of tears. Mez . 1 cured permanently after other remedies had failed Q. W. Vance). ( 3 ) Mrs. X. had pain in right eye-tooth, daily increasing. Felt too long. Pains much < by pressure on crown and outside root. Mez . 2 cured (Oehme). ( 4 ) Toothache in incisor tooth in lady. Tooth feels elongated, loose, excessively sensitive, with sensation as if being raised out of its socket. Upper part of tooth excessively painful. Mez . 200 cured in a few hours (Hempel). ( 5 ) The fastenings of a hammock broke, and a lady on it fell, striking the sacrum and coccyx on the stump of a tree. She suffered excruciating pain. Arn . was applied locally. In a few weeks she came home, and the coccyx was still so tender she could not sit ─ only lie or stand. Arn . internally and externally for two weeks had no influence. Mez . 2 cured in five days (Oehme). ─ "Constipation after confinement" has proved a good indication for Mez .: "My stools are as hard as stone, and as large as my arm. I feel as if they would split me open. They come in sections like mouthfuls, and I become much exhausted and tremble with weakness. Every stool is immediately preceded by chills, and followed by long stitches up rectum." Mez . 12 produced a natural stool in twelve hours (H. Noah Martin). Green discharges according to Cooper strongly indicate Mez . It has cured a case of dry crust on scalp and falling out of hair, accompanied with short sight. Daphne laureola , the British representative of the genus, has cured scald-head when Mez . failed. The symptoms in this case were < by day, whereas Mez . has < at night. The pains of D. laureola come on in the morning and affect the entire head or whole left side: Guaiac . pains are also < by day and > by warmth (Cooper). Cooper gives me the following cases: ( 1 ) Woman, 48, had rheumatism which came on ten years before in hands from wearing wet gloves, and extended later to arms and knees; stiffness on walking with loss of muscular power, < in hot weather, "pins and needles" in fingers on elevating arms, cannot grasp things, sometimes one hand burns when other is cold, climacteric flushings. Great relief from Mez . Ø. ( 2 ) Girl, 18, getting thin, with headache across forehead, temples, and eyes, a throbbing with sickness of stomach and water-brash, always < by movement; bowels very confined; menses never appeared. Mez . cured; ( 3 ) Pimples on ankles and backs of feet, horrid taste and clamminess of mouth in morning, pimples > by hard scratching, sluggish bowels. Mez . cured. H. B. Esmond ( H. R ., vii. 41) cured with Mez . 3x a youth, 17, who had been afflicted with "salt rheum" as long as he could remember. It was absent in summer, but every autumn, as soon as cold weather came, face, neck, hands, and forearms would break out and continue sore till warm weather returned. Another indication for Mez . is hypersensitiveness of the ear to air. It has cured a case in which there was a feeling as if air went through the ear to the throat. The rectum and anus are the seat of many characteristic symptoms, stitches, burning itching. During stool the rectum prolapses and the sphincter closes upon the protruded part. This constricting tendency is noticed in the throat and stomach, and also in the tendons. The leg is shortened with pain in hip. Tension in muscles of chest. Pain and stiffness in muscles of neck. Cramp-like contraction over chest and back; and across front of chest. Sensations are: Head as if drunk; as if everything in the head would press asunder; as if skull would split; as if top of head gone; as if head bruised; as if head was in an ants' nest. Eyes as if too large; as if drawn back into head. Ears as if too open; as if air pouring into them; as if tympanum was exposed to cold air; as if air was distending right external meatus. Teeth feel too long. Hard palate, feels as if made of wood. Throat as if narrowing. As if food remained a long time in stomach. Stools feel as if they would split anus. Chest feels too tight. Limbs feel shortened. As if fire darting through muscles. As if millions of insects were crawling on him. Sensation of lightness of body. Bones are very sore and feel distended. Diseased parts wither. Mez . is suited to: Light-haired persons; phlegmatic temperament; irresolute. The plant flowers in very early spring, even when snow is on the ground, and it is suited to complaints which come on in the earliest months of the year. < From cold; damp; cold winds; sudden changes of weather; heat; warm food. Head pains are > wrapping up head. Prosopalgia > by heat of stove (not by other heat). Drawing in air > toothache. < From touch or pressure. < From motion. Lying down < itching of scalp. Stooping > headache. < Evening and night. < During menses (burning itching inner side of throat). Affections go from above downward; from within outward; and from right to left.

Head

Eyes

Inclination to wink with eyes. ─ Dryness in eyes, with pressure in them. ─ Twitching of muscles around eyes. ─ Lachrymation, with smarting in eyes. ─ Staring at one spot. ─ Pain, as if balls of eyes were too large, with aching. ─ Sensation as if eyes drawn back into head. ─ Eyes feel strained. ─ Smarting in internal canthi. ─ Inflammation of eyes; conjunctiva injected, dirty red. ─ Three days after one dose Mez . Ø eyes became bloodshot, first one then the other, with cramp in both feet and l. upper limb, < night. (R. T. C.). ─ Myopia, or presbyopia. ─ Sparks before eyes. ─ Obstinate twitching of the muscles of the l. upper lid. ─ Pupils contracted.

Ears

Otalgia, with drawing and acute pullings. ─ Itching and oozing eruption behind ears (scratching causes small elevations, they are scratched off and feel sore). ─ Hardness of hearing. ─ Sensation of stoppage of ears. ─ Ears feel as if they were too open, and as if air were pouring into them, or as if the tympanum were exposed to the cold air, with a desire to bore with fingers into ear. ─ Sensation as though air were distending the r. external meatus; afterward in l.; as if roaring would occur. ─ Tinkling in ears, sometimes with drowsiness. ─ [Cooper supplies the following additions]: Deafness with headache all over head, < on vertex, as if the bone were breaking, a splitting headache with tenderness of scalp, begins across root of nose and eyes and is < at night, also a sick feeling after food (cured). ─ Bursting sensation in r. ear with neuralgia of whole side of head (cured). ─ A rumbling in ears, with feeling of fulness and pressure and dimness of sight (produced). ─ Swelling of r. ear and itching as if a boil were forcing itself through concha (produced). ─ Adenoids, post nasal; deafness < when eating, slight otorrhœa, stuffiness of l. nostril with ozæna. ─ Very deaf, both membranes highly vascular following cold and acute headache of r. side of head; deafness had lasted 2 1/2 months (cured). ─ Heavy dulness in l. ear with itching in both eyelids, could scratch them to pieces (cured).

Nose

Twitching (visible) on root of nose. ─ Excoriation of interior of nose. ─ Diminution of smell, with sensation of dryness in nose, and sometimes ineffectual desire to sneeze. ─ Frequent sneezings, accompanied by pain of excoriation in chest. ─ Fluent coryza, with secretion of liquid and yellow (thin, at times bloody) mucus, excoriation and burning in nose, and eruption on lips, and burning of upper lip. ─ (Ozæna, 15 years, in woman, 35, < l. nostril: Mez . 3x irritated nostril, was then omitted and discharge ceased; this occurred several times, till quite cured. ─ After Mez . Ø, sneezes many times for twenty-four hours, then gets darting pains from head to foot and is hardly able to bear anything to touch her for three days. ─ R. T. C.)

Face

Grey, earthy complexion. ─ Face and forehead hot and red, with great restlessness and peevishness. ─ Paleness of face. ─ Cramp-like and stunning pressure on cheek-bone, sometimes only on one side (r.), and extending to eye, temple, ear, teeth, neck, and into shoulder. ─ Drawings in jaw-bones. ─ Continued and painful twitching in cheeks and eyelids. ─ Frequent troublesome twitching of muscles in middle of r. cheek. ─ Furunculi on face. ─ Child scratches its face constantly; it becomes covered with blood. ─ In night child scratches its face so that the bed is covered with blood in morning; face is covered with a scab, which the child keeps constantly tearing off anew, and on the spots thus left raw large, fat pustules form. ─ The ichor from scratched face excoriates other parts. ─ A honey-like scab around mouth. ─ Skin of face is of a deep inflammatory redness, the eruption is humid and fat. ─ Excoriation and burning in lips and commissures. ─ Lips swollen and cracked, with exfoliation; swelling of lower lip with rhagades. ─ Upper lip ulcerated, with burning pain when touched. ─ Shootings in submaxillary glands.

Teeth

Pains in carious teeth. ─ The hollow teeth decay suddenly. ─ Drawing, burning, or boring shootings in teeth, and into cheek-bones, and temples. ─ Jerking and tearing pains in teeth. ─ Sensation as if teeth were set on edge, and too long. ─ Toothache < by touch and by movement, as well as during the shiverings in evening. ─ Teeth pain when touched by the tongue. ─ Ebullition of blood to the head, shiverings and constipation, during toothache. ─ Teeth coated with fetid mucus. ─ Teeth speedily become carious. ─ Burning vesicles in gums.

Mouth

Burning vesicles in mouth and on tongue. ─ Tongue swollen, protruding. ─ Tongue quite raw. ─ Constant burning in mouth. ─ Burning in the mouth and throat. ─ Impeded speech.

Throat

Pressive pain in throat on swallowing. ─ Roughness, excoriation, smarting scraping, and lancinating in throat and palate. ─ Burning in throat (pharynx) and in œsophagus. ─ Inflammation of throat. ─ Constriction and contraction of pharynx; the food presses on the part during deglutition.

Appetite

Beer has a bitter taste, and is thrown up when taken. ─ Increased hunger at noon. ─ Great hunger or loss of appetite. ─ Violent hunger in afternoon and evening. ─ Unusual longing for ham fat. ─ Burning in the stomach, mouth, and throat, > by eating (swallowing the food). ─ Repugnance to food.

Stomach

Frequent and empty risings, esp. after drinking. ─ Sensation of nausea in throat. ─ Sensation as if posterior part of throat were full of mucus, same after hawking. ─ Nausea, with accumulation of water in mouth, shuddering and trembling of whole body. ─ Violent vomitings of greenish and bitter mucus, accompanied by headache. ─ Vomiting of blood. ─ Aching in stomach. ─ Burning, and sensation of heat in stomach. ─ Inflammation of stomach. ─ Contraction of diaphragm.

Abdomen

Abdomen hard and tense. ─ Chronic, cramp-like, acute, pulling, pressive, constrictive, and shooting pains in abdomen. ─ Stitches in l. hypochondrium. ─ Dull pain in region of spleen. ─ Heaviness in abdomen. ─ Sensation of heat, and burning in abdomen. ─ Inflammation of intestines. ─ Expansive pressure in inguinal ring. ─ Drawing in inguinal glands. ─ Flatulent colic, with rumbling and borborygmi in abdomen, difficult respiration, and shivering. ─ Many short, fetid, flatulent discharges, esp. before the stool.

Stool and Anus

Difficult stools, of the consistence of thick pap, with urgent want to evacuate. ─ Constipation. ─ Constipation, stool dark brown, in knots, very hard balls, with great straining, but not painful. ─ Stools soft, brown, smelling sour. ─ Soft stool in evening, fermented stool, not fully digested, smelling very offensive or sour. ─ Excessive diarrhœa (small stools) with intolerable colic. ─ Brown fæces, containing some white, glistening bodies. ─ Scanty, soft, frequent evacuations. ─ Violent diarrhœa, with insupportable pains in abdomen. ─ [Passes large quantities of blood by bowel with diarrhœa and sickness; is bilious (cured). ─ Mez . often relieves constipation, esp. with hepatic and uterine inertia. ─ R. T. C.]. ─ During (or after) stool, prolapse of rectum with constriction of anus, which makes it very difficult to replace; sore and painful to touch. ─ Before and after stool, creeping in rectum as from ascarides. ─ Stitch in rectum; upwards (in afternoon). ─ Biting, sore pain in anus on walking, and a burning in rectum. ─ Pain in anus and anterior part of penis. ─ Pinching in anus and near anus l. side. ─ Crawling in anus; much itching. ─ Tenesmus, tearing and drawing in anus and perinæum, and through whole urethra. ─ Coldness and shuddering, before, and after the evacuation.

Urinary Organs

Diminished secretion of urine. ─ In morning and forenoon, frequent discharges of large quantities of pale urine. ─ Flock-like cloudiness, and reddish sediment in urine. ─ Hæmaturia. ─ Sticking in kidney, and pain as if torn. ─ Pain, as from excoriation, in urethra. ─ Discharge of mucus from urethra. ─ Discharge of a few drops of blood after urinating. ─ Biting burning in forepart of urethra at close of micturition. ─ After micturition, itching at prepuce.

Male Sexual Organs

Tearing, jerking, and lancination, in penis. ─ Tearing and burning lancinations in the end of the glans. ─ Heat and swelling of penis. ─ Violent erections and increased sexual desire. ─ Swelling of testicles. ─ Fine pricking stitches in penis and tip of glans. ─ Abundant secretion of smegma behind glans, like gonorrhœa balani. ─ Swelling (painless) of scrotum.

Female Sexual Organs

Chronic leucorrhœa, like white of eggs (malignant, corroding), sometimes also serous. ─ Menses: too frequent and lasting too long; scanty with leucorrhœa and prosopalgia; suppressed. ─ During pregnancy, diarrhœa and prolapsus recti. ─ After confinement, constipation, burning and stitches in rectum. ─ (Climacteric flushings remain away for several months.)

Respiratory Organs

Hoarseness, with burning and dryness in throat, irritation which excites coughing, rawness in chest, and difficult respiration. ─ Violent cough, when lying down. ─ Dry cough, with retching and vomiting, in evening, and at night. ─ Desire to draw a long breath. ─ Spasmodic, violent whooping-cough, caused by an irritation in larynx, extending to chest, expectoration in morning, of a yellow, albuminous, tough mucus, tasting salt. ─ The cough is < in evening till midnight; or day and night, with tension over thorax; when eating or drinking anything hot (has to cough till the food is vomited up); from drinking beer. ─ Violent inclination to cough low down in trachea; cannot loosen anything by the cough.

Chest

Difficult respiration. ─ Pain in chest, during inspiration, as if there were adhesions in lungs, and the cavity of the chest were too narrow. ─ Aching in chest. ─ Painful tension of muscles of chest. ─ The chest feels too tight on stooping. ─ Pain, as from excoriation and burning in sternum. ─ Stitches in chest, < during inspiration; in (r.) side of chest, < from drawing a long breath.

Pulse

Pulse intermittent; full, tense, hard.

Neck and Back

Painful rigidity of nape of neck, and of neck and external muscles; in r. side of neck and throat, < on motion. ─ Tearing jerking in sides of neck. ─ Rheumatic pains in muscles of shoulder-blade; they feel tense and swollen, and prevent motion. ─ Shootings in back. ─ Contractive and tensive pain in back, extending to sacrum. ─ Sacral pains. ─ (Coccyx tender and sore, from a fall).

Upper Limbs

Dislocating pain in shoulder-joint. ─ R. arm feels sprained on top of shoulder. ─ Pain, as from excoriation, in axillæ (r.). ─ R. hand cold (while writing), l. warm (in a warm room). ─ Cold hands. ─ Trembling in r. hand. ─ Tips of fingers powerless, cannot hold anything. ─ The hands (and feet) go to sleep continually. ─ Drawing and rheumatic tension in arms, with paralytic weakness. ─ Paralysis of flexors. ─ Jerking pains in shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers. ─ Swelling and heat of arm and hand, with twitching and pricking in muscles. ─ Ulcers on finger-joints.

Lower Limbs

Jerking in hip-joint, as far as knee. ─ Contraction of leg. ─ R. hip-joint feels sprained on walking. ─ Twitching of whole of r. leg. ─ Pain in hip, the leg is shortened. ─ Whole leg covered with elevated white scabs. ─ (Ulcer on leg with intense itching in surrounding skin and in scalp, much < in warmth; with slight diarrhœa.). ─ Cracking in r. knee when rising in morning. ─ Legs and feet go to sleep. ─ Stitches in toes of r. foot. ─ Pain in periosteum of the long bones, esp. the tibia, < at night in bed, and then the least touch is intolerable. ─ Pains in bones of thighs and legs. ─ Tearing, drawing, and tension in thighs, legs, feet, and toes. ─ Tension and stiffness in knees. ─ Jerking, and pressive pain in tibia. ─ Hard swelling of calves of legs. ─ Jerking pain in toes. ─ Violent pains in bones of feet; in bones of instep, < when walking. ─ Pain in ball of little toe.

Generalities

[This remedy is often useful in cases of very violent neuralgic pains about the teeth or face, particularly if the pain be in the l. bone, running toward ear; also neuralgic pains at night in teeth. ─ Affections of any kind appearing on external head, principally r. side; teeth in l. side; forehead; shin-bone. ─ Collection of water in mouth, i.e ., "mouth waters.". ─ Urine with real flakes, which float about on the top. ─ Subsultus tendinum, as in typhoid fever, &c., when by putting the fingers on the wrist or on other parts of the body the tendons are felt to jump and jerk. ─ Burning, darting sensation in the muscles like fire darting through them. ─ H. N. G.]. ─ Drawing, rheumatic tearing, and tension in the limbs, with paralytic weakness. ─ Thrilling pains, which leave a distressing sensation behind them, for a long time. ─ Drawing, pains in one side of body, with shivering. ─ Pains, accompanied by shivering and shuddering. ─ Gnawing pains, as from excoriation in mucous membranes. ─ Burning in the organs of digestion. ─ Burning of internal parts, with external chilliness. ─ Inflammation and swelling of bones; esp. shafts of cylindrical bones; caries, after abuse of Mercury. ─ Ulceration of bones. ─ Tension in muscles. ─ Hot, jerking stitches in various parts of body. ─ Jerking and quivering of muscles. ─ Drawings and sensation of weakness in joints; joints feel bruised and weary, as if they would give way. ─ Contusive pain, and heaviness in all limbs. ─ Heaviness and indolence of body. ─ Feeling of great lightness of body. ─ General sick feeling. ─ Bending of body in walking. ─ Emaciation or bloatedness of body and face, with enlargement of abdomen in children. ─ Pain in the glands. ─ Abscesses of fibrous parts or tendons. ─ Predominance of sufferings on one side of the body. ─ Symptoms < in the evening; < on touching part affected; and on movement. ─ Great susceptibility to cold air. ─ Sensitiveness to washing with cold water in morning.

Skin

Sensitiveness to touch. ─ General desquamation of skin of body; usual liver spots on chest and arms become dark and desquamate. ─ Red rash, itching violently; < in bed, from touch; burning and change of place after scratching. ─ Cutaneous ulcers form over bony protuberances. ─ Ulcers with thick, whitish, yellow scabs, under which thick, yellow pus collects. ─ Skin covered with elevated white scabs. ─ Itching, esp. at night (when in bed), more violent and painful (and changed to burning) after scratching the parts, and sometimes with swelling of the part that has been scratched. ─ Gnawing itching as from vermin. ─ Miliary eruptions, sometimes chronic. ─ Furunculi. ─ Inflamed ulcers, with burning and shooting, or with gnawing pain of excoriation. ─ Inflammation and swelling of the bones, rachitis, caries. ─ Ulcers: with an areola, sensitive and easily bleeding when removing the linen, which sticks, painful at night, the pus tends to form an adherent scab, under which a quantity of pus collects, burning and stinging with inflammation. ─ Vesicles around the ulcers, itching violently and burning, like fire. ─ Suppuration after inflammation.

Sleep

Great sleepiness by day, with agitated and unrefreshing sleep, at night. ─ Shocks in body during sleep. ─ Waking early (towards 2 or 3 a.m.) in consequence of nightmare.

Fever

Pulse full and hard; in the evening accelerated; intermitting at times. ─ Chilliness, shiverings, and coldness of whole body, esp. in hands and feet, with violent thirst, and sometimes without a desire for warmth. ─ Chill predominates even in warm room. ─ Chill with thirst and desire for heat. ─ Chill from upper arms, extending to back and legs. ─ Heat in bed, mostly in the head. ─ Intermittent fever; chill over the whole body accompanied by asthmatic contraction and tightness of chest, in front and back. ─ During cold stage, a peculiar thirst; dryness in back of mouth, with accumulation of saliva in fore part without any desire to drink. ─ During cold stage, drowsiness in the warm room. ─ Sleep, with sweat, after the shiverings (without previous heat). ─ Fever, accompanied by headache, and paleness of face, the splenetic region painful, swollen, and hard, weakness and great susceptibility to cold air; tertian fever. ─ Violent inflammatory fever.

Outer head

Numb feeling in top of head, or as if top of head was gone.
Pain in bones of skull, mostly < by touch.
Aching pain in vertex and occiput, < at night and > towards morning ; while pain lasted she groaned, wept and sobbed ; very sensitive and irritable ; during violence of pain cold shudder down back, hands cool, feet as if bruised ; simultaneously with head pains
severe pains in bones of upper arm and shin bone ; a distinct thickening of scalp could be felt in painful parts, which were sensitive to touch ; pains < on entering room, on sudden changes of weather, from cold winds and cold, damp air ; > when body began to perspire,
but if she covered herself in order to get into a sweat, pains were < at once ; when pains are < has a feeling of paralysis in limbs, cannot move them well, they feel very heavy ; if she attempts motion pain is < θ Cephalalgia
periostitica.
Cranial bones pain, are swollen and sensitive to cold and contact ; < from motion and in evening ; caries ; itching, burning of scalp.
Pains in bones of head, so severe as almost to cause fainting ; skull bones in several places elevated and symptoms seem to indicate that brain was being pressed upon either by extravasation or an exostosis. θ Syphilis.
Scalp numb, with drawing pain, generally only on one side.
Scalp on both sides of vertex painful to touch.
Burning, biting, itching on scalp, < on vertex ; scratching changes locality, but increases itching, sore boils follow, < at night and when lying down.
Dandruff, white, dry ; dry scurf on scalp.
Head covered with a thick, leather-like crust, under which thick, white pus collects here and there and hair is glued together. θ Tinea capitis.
Scabs on head look chalky, and extend to eyebrows and to nape of neck.
Elevated, white, chalk-like scabs, with ichor beneath ; breeding vermin.
Moist, itching eruption on head and behind ears.
Itching of scalp ; pain in cranial bones, < at night, with itching and burning in skin, < by rubbing ; burning in skin of vertex and temples ; itching in eyebrows ; burning, itching in nostrils and in side of ears ; pimples on scalp. θ Pityriasis
capitis.
Eruption on scalp, preceded by violent headache for six months ; scalp covered with scurf, hair comes out in handfuls ; hair of eyebrows and eyelashes drop out ; scalp and face itch violently, especially when she gets warm, and if she attempts to wash anything steam from
warm water causes her nose, eyes and face to itch ; desquamation ; she dare not approach fire from intense itching caused by doing so ; scurf comes off scalp when scratched "like fish scales ;" spots of a similar nature come out on thighs, back and chest ;
terrible irritation in vagina, which has continued for a year unaccompanied by any abnormal discharge. θ Pityriasis capitis.
A growth as large as a thaler on middle of forehead, projecting about four lines ; came and went spontaneously and suddenly ; scaly exfoliation of skin.
Dry eruption on head, with intolerable itching as if head was in an ant's nest. θ Favus.

Sight and eyes

Staring at one spot ; vacant look.
Inclination to wink or close eyes.
Dryness in eyes with pressure in them ; they feel too large.
A feeling as if eyes were drawn backward into head.
Eyes feel strained.
Aching and tearing in and around eye, especially in orbits.
Aching, pressive pain about left eye.
Lachrymation ; smarting in eyes ; must rub them.
Eyes hot, inflamed on rising in morning ; conjunctiva of ball very much injected, dirty red, especially near external canthus ; left eye < ; pressive pain and sensation of dryness.
Rheumatic ophthalmia and ophthalmia consequent upon abuse of mercury.
Annoying twitching of muscles of left upper lid.
Itching biting on margin of lids and skin near nose.
Itching in left upper eyelid, so violent at times that she had to cease her work ; frequently after itching pressure appeared in outer angle of left eye, but soon passed off ; < in evening.
Blepharitis from birth, with tinea capitis, which itches intensely.
Eczema of lids and head ; thick, hard scabs, from which pus exudes on pressure.
Ciliary neuralgia, especially after operations on eye.

Hearing and ears

Ears feel as if too open, and as if air was pouring into them, or as if tympanum was exposed to cold air, with a desire to bore with finger into ear.
Sensation as if air was distending right external meatus, and as though roaring in ears would occur ; afterwards in left meatus, with a stopped sensation in ear.
Boy, æt. 17, deaf from fourth year ; when three years old had an eruption on head, which was removed by pitch plaster and touching sore with nitrate of silver ; tympanum thickened, of an opaque whiteness, slightly convex only by inflation, it is impossible to recognize
bloodvessels ; Eustachian tube clear ; former eruption consisted of whitish, hard, nearly horny incrustations and scales, fissured, and through these cracks oozing of thick, yellow, foul smelling pus, severely itching, especially at night, so that child scratched off the crusts.
Chronic diffuse otitis.
Itching behind ears, scratching causes small elevations, when scratched off spots feel sore.
Oozing eruption behind ears.

Smell and nose

Sense of smell diminished, with dryness of nose.
Sneezing : ineffectual ; coryza ; sore pain in chest.
Discharge of yellow, thin, at times bloody, water from nose, causing soreness and burning.
Fluent coryza, soreness of and scabs in nose ; soreness and burning of upper lip.
Constant excoriation of nose.
External margin of right nostril inflamed, swollen and painful.
Twitching (visible) on root of nose.

Upper face

Grey, earthy complexion.
Looks ill humored, pale, wretched, fallen away.
Facial muscles drawn tense.
Frequent, troublesome, muscular twitching of muscles of r. cheek.
Orbicularis palpebrarum spasmodically contracted ; lachrymation ; nasal voice ; eruption on skin. θ Neuralgia of right supraorbital nerve.
Sudden, very violent pain in face during sleep, similar to an old faceache, waking her up but soon disappearing, and not further disturbing sleep.
Constant violent tearing in face in morning.
Prosopalgia, right side ; teeth feel too long.
Constant, fine tearing in left side of face, and in teeth after morning walk.
Neuralgic pains come quickly and leave parts numb, < from warmth.
Lightning-like pains coming from right infraorbital foramen and extending to temples and corners of mouth ; pains come suddenly while talking or eating ; during intervals twitching of muscles and numb pain. θ Prosopalgia.
Prosopalgia, left side, from arcus superciliaris into eye, cheek and teeth, down to neck and shoulder ; increased lachrymal secretion ; injected conjunctiva ; great sensitiveness of parts to touch ; dry feeling in throat ; some difficulty in swallowing ;
constant chilliness even in bed ; weak memory and debility ; < in evening until midnight, with moaning ; > from wrapping up head and from quiet in a dark room ; appetite poor ; stool costive ; menses regular but scanty, followed by irritating leucorrhœa
and pruritus vagina ; hands and feet cold ; nails blue ; on a small place on top of head a sensation of heat.
Cramping, numbing pressure ; beginning in left zygoma and spreading towards eye, temple, ear and down neck to shoulder ; at times pressive pain in occiput, sudden stitches in side and sensation as of ants running over chest ; < entering warm room and after warm
food ; appeared first on right side, later on left. θ Prosopalgia.
Boring in bones of upper jaw.
Intolerable, nightly, burning pains, in abscess of antrum of Highmore ; periosteum more affected than bones ; dull, crampy pain, referred to malar bone ; anguish, pale face, chilliness or cold sweat.
Face swollen, burning pains, confluent vesicles ; nares closed ; erysipelas bullosum.
Child continually scratches face, which is covered with blood ; face and forehead hot and red ; restlessness ; irritability ; itching < at night ; tears off scabs, leaving spots on which fat pustules form ; ichor from scratched face excoriates.
Deep, inflammatory redness of face ; eruption fat and moist. θ Impetigo.
Boils on face.
Group of vesicles on dorsum of nose, itching excessively and discharging a pale, somewhat cloudy lymph, which formed a yellowish brown acuminated scab, easily separated but reappearing ; scab attained size of small bean. θ Rupia
prominens.

Lower face

Luxatio spontanea of mandibula, with cracking in joint and movements of cond. max. inf.
Neuralgia of inframaxillaris.
Severe pain in lower jaw, in region of mental foramen, as if a hole was being bored, pain at one time on right side, then on left or both sides ; pain irregular, coming day or night, lasting several minutes ; runs along course of inframaxillary nerve ; motion of jaw
impeded ; saliva runs from open mouth ; a year ago contusion of left zygoma ; hard palate insensitive, as if made of wood ; pharynx red ; burning in throat ; varicose veins on legs ; frequent appearance of round, red spots on neck ; drawing in limbs
while in wind. θ Prosopalgia.
For many years considerable swelling of upper lip, with indurations on inside, and discoloration on skin (after scabies).
Lips : stick together ; dry ; scaly externally, painful in evening, sore, burning.
Ulcers on upper lip extending to nose.
Honey-like scabs about mouth.
Chin covered with elevated white scabs.
Red pustules on chin, painful when shaving ; broke and formed a scab ; hairy part of face covered with yellowish brown scab quarter of an inch thick, from cracks in which bloody lymph exuded, producing slight itching in edges ; around edges a dark red, moist areola ;
lids inflamed, lower lids beset with crusts and somewhat everted. θ Mentagra.
A small pustule in beard, left side of chin ; also small pimples on chest at base of hairs.

Teeth and gums

Teeth feel dull, blunt and elongated ; painful on biting on them or from fresh air.
Toothache : in carious teeth ; < at night ; when touched with tongue ; > with mouth open and drawing in air ; boring and stinging, extends to malar bones and temples ; chilliness.
Drawing pains in upper and lower jaw, left side, alternating with boring in several teeth and stitches extending to zygoma ; teeth feel dull, cold and too long ; whole side of head as if cold, with sensitive drawing pains ; < from motion or touch ; chilliness in
evening ; despondent, morose. θ Toothache.
Twitching, grasping, stitching pains in hollow tooth, and sensation as if tooth was being lifted out of socket. θ Toothache.
Pain in right eyetooth, daily increasing ; feels as if too long, < from pressure on crown and outside on root.
Woman approaching years of climaxis, suffering continually from extraordinary congestions to head, with burning redness of face, obstinate constipation ; menses always very copious and too soon ; was attacked with fearful pains in four hollow teeth, which deprived her of all
rest.
Teeth decay suddenly, on side, above gums ; crown remains intact ; decaying roots.
Roughness from tartar on teeth.

Taste, speech, tongue

Thick, white coating on tongue ; large, red, elevated papillæ ; middle fissured.
Burning on tongue extending to stomach.
Swelling under right side of tongue, which in the course of two years became as large as a pigeon's egg ; swelling painless, red, bluish at apex as from enlarged bloodvessels ; on talking or chewing ejects a watery fluid. θ Ranula.

Inner mouth

Burning : in mouth, extending to stomach ; in whole mouth, sometimes > by eating ; of lips and tongue, as if quite sore.
Heat, scraping, burning, peppery sensation on palate and in fauces.
Saliva almost always increased.
Breath smells like rotten cheese.
Flat whitish ulcers on inner side of lips and corners of mouth.
Dark redness of fauces ; burning dryness even into larynx ; < every winter ; syphilis.

Palate and throat

Burning : in throat and pharynx ; in throat, dryness in fauces, hacking cough ; anxious oppression of breath, and loosening of scanty mucus on coughing.
Constriction in throat and stomach.
Scraping and burning in fauces and pharynx.
Rawness of fauces.
Swelling and sensation of narrowing in throat.
Constriction of pharynx, food presses during deglutition.
Dry feeling in throat ; some difficulty in swallowing ; constant chilliness, even in bed.
Burning in pharynx and œsophagus.
Sensation as if posterior part of throat was full of mucus, the same after hawking.
Severe burning sensation and raw pain extending from pharynx half way down œsophagus ; deglutition even of fluids difficult and painful ; on posterior pharyngeal wall slight redness and a considerable number of small ulcers. θ Syphilis.
Syphilitic sore throat, < by former mercurial treatment, he had to keep indoors during Fall and Winter ; dark redness of faucial mucous membrane ; dryness and burning of fauces, larynx and pharynx, extending into chest, somewhat > by eating ; voice hoarse, not clear,
failing during a continuous discourse ; cold air causes pain in gums, but > burning ; expectoration of much mucus ; hemorrhoids with stitching pains ; tendency to diarrhœa.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Canine hunger noon and evening.
Desire for ham fat, coffee, wine ; beer tastes bitter and causes vomiting.
Loss of appetite.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Frequent, empty, tasteless eructations.
Nausea in throat and stomach ; vomit bitter, sour ; slimy ; oily or greasy.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Apprehensiveness at pit of stomach as when expecting unpleasant news.
Burning and uneasiness in stomach ; > by eating ; canine hunger at noon and evening. θ Gastrosis.
Burning in whole mouth, as from pepper, especially in afternoon after eating ; in morning nausea and faintness ; slight thirst ; poor appetite ; stool every third day ; pressure in stomach and intestines ; hot urine. θ Gastric
catarrh.
Constant, severe pain and pressure in stomach even after light foods ; constricting, pinching pain with much belching, lasting one to two hours after eating ; pain culminates and ends with retching and vomiting of all food taken ;
circumscribed redness of face ; skin cool ; pulse small and frequent ; chilliness alternating with flushes of heat. θ Ulcer of stomach.
Induration of stomach.
Burning, corroding pains, as if internal surface of gastric mucous membrane was raw, with sensation as if food remained for a long time undigested in stomach and caused pressure ; bloody vomiting ; great depression. θ Chronic
gastritis.
Great emaciation ; cachexia ; loss of appetite ; disgust for all animal food ; daily vomiting of chocolate colored masses, with hot burning in throat ; vomiturition, with excessive anguish and uninterrupted nausea from morning
until night ; all food is immediately thrown up ; stool only every eight or ten days ; constant sleeplessness ; touch clearly reveals two tumors of size of an orange, one in right hypochondrium, the other in scrobiculum the latter movable and sensitive to pressure
(relieved). θ Carcinoma ventriculi.

Hypochondria

Dull pain in region of spleen ; hardness and swelling, with pressive pain.

Abdomen and loins

Burning and sensation of heat in abdomen.
Stitches in left side, in region of short ribs.
Loud flatulence in abdomen, and loud emissions of it.
Rumbling and noises in abdomen.
Flatus constantly passes, but in a short and interrupted manner.
Much short, very offensive flatus, especially before stools.

Stools and rectum

Many discharges of fetid flatus, more before stool.
Stool : watery, soft ; brown, sour, fermented ; contains glistening bodies ; undigested ; offensive ; < in evening from suppressed eruption.
Small, white, shining grains in brown feces.
Stools dark brown, hard balls, much but painless straining.
Before stool : colic ; creeping chills, languor and great sensibility to cold air ; copious discharge of fetid flatus.
During stool : prolapsus recti ; painless straining ; anus becomes painful and constricted about fallen rectum ; difficult evacuations, of consistency of thick broth, with pressing desire.
After stool : chill ; constriction with tenesmus ; weakness ; sensitiveness to cold, open air ; painful tenesmus, extending to perineum and urethra (male) ; chill over whole body ; pain in fissure of anus.
Summer diarrhœa of children (complementary Bellad.).
Chronic diarrhœa, with psoric anamnesis.
Two days after labor, when defecating, painful burning in rectum, passing over into a kind of sore ; tenesmus after discharge of a small quantity of pultaceous feces ; gradually these stools increased and weakened her ; greatly ; four weeks after labor, paleness,
general malaise and chilliness ; abdomen tympanitic, sensitive to touch ; over whole abdomen sensation of heat, with burning, cutting, gurgling and borborygmus, as when fluids pass from one part of intestines to another ; constant severe tenesmus, and still she passes,
notwithstanding the severity of the pains, only small quantities of fluid or pultaceous masses ; after stool prolapsus recti, which is sore and burning until constriction has passed away ; general chilliness before and after stool, with desire for acid drinks ; no
appetite ; regurgitation of food ; sleep only late at night ; restless, throws herself about ; morose and irritable.
Constipation.
Stools hard as a stone and large ; feel as if they would split anus ; they come in sections ; becomes very much exhausted and trembles with weakness ; stool preceded by chills and followed by long stitches up rectum. θ Constipation.
Biting sore pain in anus on walking, and a burning in rectum.
Much itching about anus, several times during day and also in evening before going to sleep.

Urinary organs

Sticking in kidney and pain as if torn.
Frequent and copious discharge of pale urine in morning and forenoon.
Itching and sensation of soreness in urethra when urinating, aroused or < by pressure ; intense painful tenesmus ; tearing and drawing in anus and perineum, from which it extends through whole urethra.
Urine : diminished ; becomes flaky and has red sediment ; burning ; hot, with reddish sediment.
After urinating a few drops of blood are passed.
Hæmaturia preceded by crampy pain in bladder.

Male sexual organs

Violent erections and increased sexual desire.
Swollen testicles after maltreated gonorrhœa.
Painless swelling of scrotum.
Heat and swelling of penis.
Fine prickling stitches in penis and at summit of glans.
Itching in glans penis.
Discharge of watery mucus ; stinging and titillating through whole urethra and perineum ; urethra sore to touch. θ Gonorrhœa. θ Gleet.
Gonorrhœa with hæmaturia.
Gleet ; whitish, painless discharge, more towards morning ; gouty pains through body.

Female sexual organs

Menses : too frequent ; too soon, profuse and long lasting ; scanty, with leucorrhœa and prosopalgia ; suppressed.
Uterine ulcer, with smarting, burning or prickling sensation ; discharge albuminous, sometimes tinged with blood.
Leucorrhœa : like white of egg ; corroding ; chronic malignant.
Mucous discharge from vagina and urethra. θ Gonorrhœa.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

During pregnancy, diarrhœa with prolapsus recti ; anus after stool contracts around prolapsed rectum, which becomes constricted and sensitive to touch, painful like a sore.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Hoarseness, with cough and rawness in chest.
Voice failing or interrupted.
Burning and dryness in trachea, with hoarseness.

Respiration

Dyspnœa as if from adhesions or contraction of lungs.
On stooping, chest feels too tight.
Desire to take a long breath ; afraid of suffocating.
Snoring, in children.

Cough

Whooping cough ; paroxysms < in evening and particularly severe at night.
Cough : spasmodic, caused by irritation from larynx to chest ; sputa in morning of yellow, viscid mucus, tasting saltish or like an old catarrh. θ Whooping cough.
Cough worse : evening until 12 P. M., or day and night, with tension over thorax ; when eating or drinking anything hot must cough till food is vomited ; from beer.
Violent inclination to cough, in evening in bed, and in morning lower in trachea than can be reached by cough.
Severe dry cough, < at night ; burning in throat ; oppression ; stitching pains in chest and great anguish ; paleness of face ; constant chilliness even in bed ; sometimes cold sweat, not followed by heat ; thirst without drinking much at once ;
white coated tongue ; loss of appetite ; pale urine ; frequent small pulse.
Yellow, salty expectoration during day ; twitching of muscles of face.

Inner chest and lungs

Stitches in right chest, < drawing a long breath.
Stitches in left chest, beneath clavicle, going and coming with regularity of musical beats, extending deep into chest, shortly after only a simple aching, < by inspiration, and returning some days in succession.
Sticking pain from left side to back through chest, during an inspiration.
Sudden sharp stitches in evening near spinal marrow, through chest, extending into cartilages of left ribs.
Sore, bruised sensation in chest ; traces of blood in loosening expectoration ; oppression and anguish.
Cramplike contraction over both chest and back.
Constricting and contracting pains transversely across forepart of chest.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Pulse : full, hard, accelerated evenings ; at times intermittent ; frequent mornings, slow evenings.

Outer chest

Sore burning on bone of sternum.
Severe, constant shaking chill, with anxiety and stitches in right side, neuralgic in character ; painful parts sensitive to pressure. θ Neuralgia.
Intercostal neuralgia, following herpes zoster.
Red spots like fleabites on chest.

Neck and back

Pain and stiffness of nape and external cervical muscles.
Stiff pain in right side of nape of neck and throat, mostly on motion.
Violent itching rash on nape of neck.
Rheumatic pain in scapular muscles ; they feel tense and swollen, motion difficult.
Rheumatic pain in right scapula, in morning after rising.
Mercurial cases, limbs feel as if shortened ; pains darting like shocks of electricity. θ Disease of spine.

Upper limbs

Pain in right shoulder joint.
Pain in shoulder joint as if it would be torn asunder.
Sore feeling in right axilla.
Dry tetter, scabby, scabs small, occurring especially in bend of elbows, with red spots size of a dollar.
Eruptions on back of hands and wrists half way up to elbow ; itching < by scratching ; small burning vesicles, drying down into crusts, itching and burning after scratching, and becoming moist ; < from application of water. θ Eczema.
Right hand cold, left warm ; or both cold.
Trembling of right hand.
Burning vesicles, surrounded by a red areola, on sides of fingers.
Paralysis of flexors of fingers ; finger ends powerless, cannot hold anything.
Hands "go to sleep."

Lower limbs

Twitching pain from hip joint to knee.
Right hip joint feels sprained on walking.
Pain in hip, leg is shortened.
Pain in bones of thigh and leg.
Drawing pains, sensation of internal heat of limb, surface being cool ; > in open air.
Since confinement, fifteen years ago, ulcer on right thigh, which only closed lately, leaving a small opening oozing a clear fluid ; excruciating pains in tibia, < at night ; skin at ulcerated part brown, dry, with bluish red spots around opening ; slightest pressure of
finger causes burning pain, and still she tried to alleviate the deep seated pains by constricting limb with a handkerchief ; periosteum swollen ; stepping on foot prevented by severity of pains ; sleepless at night on account of pains and cramps in calves of legs. θ Periostitis.
Right femur from knee to middle greatly swollen ; soft parts not affected ; periphery of affected leg 2 1/2" larger, five inches above knee, than sound one ; about middle of femur swelling ceased and formed a marked elevation, where it met the unaffected part of
bone ; tendons in popliteal space shortened, so that leg was flexed and it became impossible to extend it ; internal and external condyles swollen, patella not affected ; extreme pain at night and on slightest touch ; severe stitching pains in leg ; loss of
appetite ; coated tongue ; thirst ; constipation ; turbid urine ; small, quick pulse ; night sweats ; sleeplessness ; great emaciation ; despondency.
After healing of axillary abscess, large, irregular, sometimes confluent, distinctly defined, copper colored spots on inner side of thighs extending to groin ; not elevated, not disposed to suppurate, but seat of distressing burning itching, < at menstrual epoch, at which time
the spots assume a darker color, especially at edges ; occasional hemicrania, stitches in spleen, frequent chills, trembling of limbs and morbidly fretful. θ Pityriasis versicolor.
Cracking in right knee when rising in morning.
Acute jerking in left knee.
Pressive pain in right tibia.
Violent pain in tibia, as if beaten, or as if periosteum was torn off, after midnight, disturbing sleep.
Pain in periosteum of long bones, especially tibia, < at night in bed, least touch is intolerable ; < in damp weather. θ Syphilis. θ Rheumatism.
Large syphilitic ulcer on left leg ; tibia thickened throughout whole length, and periosteum swollen around ulcer ; in evening, when much fatigued, slight oozing of serum at edges of ulcer ; when thick crust was removed from ulcer, latter
appeared shallow and secreted a sanguinous discharge ; burning pain, < from heat of bed.
Ulcer on right tibia, three inches long, two wide, above internal malleolus ; surrounding skin coppery red, covered with pustules.
Leg, from knee to instep, covered with thick, yellow scab from cracks of which thick, yellow matter oozes on pressure ; scab falls off in pieces, leaving skin deep red, sore, itching violently and exuding a thin, clear fluid ; forming a thin scab under which pus again
collects ; skin around scabs dark red, tense, hot, itching ; foot swollen, with painful stitches on beginning to walk ; at night intolerable itching and burning in eruption ; foul odor. θ Herpes
crustaceus.
Legs and feet "go to sleep."
Violent nightly pains in bones of feet ; rheumatism.

Limbs in general

Trembling of extremities.

Lecture

The principal use of this remedy is in eruptions and ulcerations.

The most violent and important of its symptoms are those of mucous membranes, skin and periosteum. The outer surfaces of the body are in a constant state of irritation; nervous feelings, biting, tingling, itching, changing place from scratching. Even when there is nothing to be seen, there is violent itching and the patient rubs and scratches until the part becomes raw and then burns; itching changes place; the part becomes cold after scratching, cold in spots. Itching changing place after scratching, especially when associated with no visible cause.

As soon as he gets warm in bed or as soon as he goes into a warm room, the itching begins. Formication, itching, biting. The patient is so nervous that he is compelled to move, to change positions.

Vesicular eruptions upon the skin, running a certain course, itching, burning like fire; dries into a crust and disappears; a new crop appears near or in the same place. Vesicles form crusts beneath which is ulceration; these crusts turn white, chalk-like, are thick, tough and leathery.

They are often elevated; fluctuation beneath the crusts; pressure causes thick, white pus, sometimes yellow-white, to ooze forth; violent itching. The pains are aggravated by cold, but the itching and restlessness are worse from beat. A child tears. at the eruption with its fingers when the crusts are present.

Scald-head; thick, white, elevated crusts; copious, white or yellow white pus, often offensive, putrid; vermin are often found among the crusts. Acrid pus eating away the hair; the eruption spreads to any part of the scalp, especially to the top; it is also found beneath the ears, and about the face and chin.

Eruptions with much itching; dark, red rash with violent itching, biting, tingling, crawling, changing place by pressure, rubbing or scratching. Cases with a history of suppressed eczema or syphilis. Eruptions upon the legs and arms, on parts with poor circulation as the ears, wrists, backs of the bands; skin eruptions followed by ulcers; discharging a thick, white, offensive matter.

Especially useful where eruptions have been suppressed by zinc ointment, mercurial salve, etc. Eruptions on the face, eyes, ears and scalp in child or adult, which have disappeared under the use of some ointment and inveterate catarrhal conditions have resulted, or in which eye symptoms have developed; conjunctiva chronically swollen, ectropion, granular lids, conjunctival surfaces like raw beef; fissures in the comers of the eye; red cicatrices about the eyes where the eruptions have been; dry spots and enlarged veins about the eyes and nose; skin feels indurated.

Ear troubles from suppressed eruptions; thickening of the mucous membranes of the ears; degeneration of the drum of the car; deafness, otorrhoea.

Offensive and troublesome catarrh of the nose; incrustations, thickening of the mucous membrane, ulceration; he hawks thick, yellow matter out of the throat; has been cauterized, atomized, etc., and yet the offensive ozoena remains. The periosteum is affected so that it breaks down. Advanced state of atrophic degeneration of the mucous membranes of the throat and nose.

In the throat, thickening, burning, chronic redness, tumefaction, smarting, soreness on swallowing; granulations and ulcerations of the throat.

Perforating ulcers of the soft palate, all due to suppressed eruptions. Give the remedy and you will have a copious eruption in the original place; if not, there will be no relief. Often the deafness cannot be cured, because the drum of the ear or the whole ear is destroyed, is white, chalky, and contains no blood-vessels; a state of atrophic catarrh, so that there is too much structural change for hearing to be restored, yet the patient can be cured.

Has all the catarrhal states, the ulcerations and patches of copper colored eruptions found in syphilis.

When outward manifestations are pronounced, its internal manifestations are scanty. It tends to manifest the sufferings of the body on the skin; it throws the physical evils to the surface, hence, the Mez. patient is in fairly good health when the eruptions are out; when they are suppressed, then catarrhal affections, bone diseases, nervous disorders, strange mental symptoms constipation, rheumatism, and joint symptoms appear; he becomes a mental wreck.

Religious or financial melancholy; melancholy which shapes itself upon the patient's business; indifference to everybody and everything; irritable; thought is difficult; memory weak; absent minded; has no rest when alone, yet averse to talking. Insanity with melancholy, sadness, and a history of eruptions that have called for Mez.

Violent headaches and brain affections; pains rending, tearing; boring; head painful to touch; syphilitic affection of the brain; headaches through the sides of the head as if in the bone; feels as if the head would be crushed (closely related to Merc. and Kali iod.).

Headache extending from the root of the nose to the forehead ( Merc. and Hepar ). Pains in the head cause faintness ( Hepar). Pains in the bones of the skull aggravated by touch; bones feel as if scraped.

The hair mats together.

"Head covered with thick, leather-like crusts, under which thick, white pus collects here and there, and glues the hair together.

Scabs on the head look chalky and extended to the eyebrows and nape of neck.

Elevated, white, chalk-like scabs with ichor beneath, breeding vermin."

Neuralgias, sciatica, pain in the spine, in the brachial plexus and down the arms; neuralgia of the face; all following suppressed eruptions.

The Mez. patient is sensitive to warm air as far as the skin and. eruptions are concerned, but very sensitive to damp or cold weather as to the neuralgias. After the eruptions have given place to internal manifestations, the patient is chilly, sensitive to the changes of the weather, worse in stormy weather; worse after a bath, because he takes cold and his internal complaints are aggravated. The eruptions are aggravated after washing.

When the eruptions are not out, the skin is hot and he wants something to cool it; he is better from cool water; there is simply a redness at this time. The itching is aggravated from bathing in warm water.

Ulceration about the roots of the teeth; a scrofulous condition of the gums, which bleed, settle away from the teeth; the teeth decay suddenly.

The face is sickly, full of ulcers, old scars, boils, etc. The anaemic face may flush up at times, but it is usually pale, gray, and waxy, expressive of a cachexia met with in some bone diseases.

Sensation of goneness, fear, apprehension, faintness in the stomach, as if something would happen; every shock, pain and hearing bad news, cause this apprehensive, hungry, faint, weak, all-gone feeling in the pit of the stomach. It comes on when the door-bell rings, if the patient is expecting the postman, while waiting at the depot for the arrival of a friend or the departure of the cars; on being introduced to sonic one, he experiences a thrill beginning in the stomach is "frightened in the stomach."

Cal., Kali carb., Phos. and Mez. have this. These "solar-plexus" individuals often have a deep cracked tongue and are hard to cure.

Worse from the warmth of the bed (hence related to Merc. and syphilis). Neuralgia worse in bed and at night, relieved by the external application of heat, but worse afterward; better in the open air.

Inflammatory rheumatism, worse from the warmth of the bed and at night; worse from touch; pains run down the bones; bursting sensation in the bones. They feel enlarged; tearing pains in the periosteum, necrosis, caries, fistulous openings discharging briny particles and large ulcers surrounded by pustules.

Characteristic

For light-haired, irresolute persons of a phlegmatic temperament.

Hypochondriacal and despondent; indifferent to everything and everybody; angry at trifles and perfectly harmless things, but is soon sorry for it.

Eczema: intolerable itching, < in bed and from touch; copious, serous exudation; itching eruptions after vaccination.

Child scratches face continually, which is covered with blood; eruptions moist; itching < at night; inflammatory redness of face.

Violent headache, after slight vexation; it was painful on the slightest touch; generally right side.

The head is covered with a thick, leather-like crust, under which thick and white pus collects here and there; hair is glued together; pus after a time is ichorous, becomes offensive, breeds vermin.

Toothache: in carious teeth (Kreos.); feel elongated, dull pain when biting on them and when touched with tongue, < at night; > with mouth open and drawing in air.

Ulcers covered with thick, whitish-yellow scabs, under which thick yellow pus collects.

Linen or charpie sticks to the ulcers, when it is torn away they bleed.

Vesicles appear around the ulcers, itch violently, burn like fire (Hep.); fiery-red, shining areola around.

Bones, especially long bones, inflamed, swollen; nightly pains going from above downwards; after abuse of Merc., after venereal diseases; caries; exostoses, tumors soften from within out.

Pain in periosteum of long bones < at night in bed, least touch, in damp weather (Mer., Phyt.).

Neuralgic burning pains, after zona.

Aggravation

Cold air; cold washing; night; contact, motion; one side (right) is usually affected; bad effects of mercury or alcohol.

Type

Fevers tend to remittent or typhoid. Epidemics occurring in January and February often call for Mezereum.

Chill

With thirst, with dry mouth posteriorly, and much saliva anteriorly; predominates even in a warm room, with sleepiness; from upper arms extending to back and legs (Mer.). Chilliness out of bed; heat in bed (same during heat, Mer.). Asthmatic constriction and oppression of chest (oppression of chest as if the patient would smother, Apis). Chilliness, of single parts, as if dashed with cold water, especially over arms, abdomen, hips, feet, with yawning, while face and hands are warm (Led.). Great chilliness over the whole body, hands and feet very cold, with blue nails, with small hot spot on top of the head. External coldness for 36 hours, with great thirst, without desire for warmth or dread of open air, and without subsequent heat (chill 24 hours, Aran.—12 hours, Canth.). Chill > by heat (Ars., Ign.—> by drinking, Ipec., Caust.). Very sensitive to cold air—less so in hot stage.

Heat

Burning of internal parts with external chilliness. Heat of left side of body (of right side, Meny.). Following the chill, intense heat with sleep, sweat breaking out during sleep (deep sleep as chill passes off and breaks out with urticaria, Apis—falls asleep at climax of hot stage, and sweats profusely, Pod.).

Sweat

Skin dripping with cold perspiration.

Tongue

Thick, white coating on the tongue, with large, red, elevated papillæ (Acon., Bell.).

Pulse

Full and hard; accelerated in the evening; intermittent at times; morning frequent, evening slow.

Apyrexia

Headache; pale face; hardness and swelling of the spleen, with pressive pain in left hypochondrium; loss of appetite; sensitiveness to cold air. General weakness. Great tendency to run into remittent or typhoid, particularly the latter.

Analysis

Chill; severe, long-lasting; of single parts; great thirst, no desire for heat or dread of open air, no subsequent fever.

Heat; intense, with sleep, sweat breaking out during sleep.

Sweat; drenching, cold.
