General

An irritant to the skin and mucous membranes. Burning pain in bones. Pains in limbs and paralytic weakness in the joints. Important respiratory and skin symptoms. Terrible burning pains. Pains of cancer. Everything appears larger than it really is.

Head

Acute mania. Violent, pressive headache.

Face

Erysipelas; yellow blisters. Burning in cheek; worse, left. Eyes inflamed and agglutinated in morning; Red swelling of cheeks. Nasal pruritus with mucous secretions from naso-pharynx.

Stomach

Great hunger. Sialorrhea (profuse salty saliva). Waterbrash. Thirst for cold drinks.

Relationship

Compare: Euphorbia amygdaloides-Wood Spurge (in pain in antrum, illusion of smell, odor of mice. Sense of taste blunted. Diarrhœa; stools difficult, with painful anal spasm).

Euphorbia corollata-Large Flowering Spurge--(a diaphoretic expectorant and cathartic of the old school in gastro-enteric disturbance, with deathly nausea. Vomiting of food, water, and mucus and copious evacuations. Attacks recur after short intermissions. Feeling of clawing in stomach; cold sweat) (Verat alb).

Euphorbia marginata-Snow on the mountain--(Honey from the flowers is poisonous, detected by the hot, acrid taste. The milky juice produces skin symptoms like Rhus).

Euphorbia pilulifera-Pillbearing Spurge--(Humid asthma, cardiac dyspnœa, hay-fever, and bronchitis. Urethritis, with intense pain on urinating, and much urging. Acrid leucorrhœa; worse least movement. Hæmorrhages from sunstroke and traumatism).

Mind and Disposition

Earnest quietness, driving one to occupy himself. Serious and taciturn.

Head

Vertigo when standing or walking in the open air. Sensation of soreness (as if beaten) in the back part of the head ; worse in the morning ; when lying ; from heat ; relieved by motion and cooling the head.

Eyes

Smarting of the eyes, with lachrymation. Pale-red inflammation of the eyelids, with nightly agglutination. Inflammation of the eyes, with itching of the eyelids and canthi of the eye. Diplopia ; seeing a person walk before him he imagines he sees the same man walking after him.

Nose

Discharge of a quantity of mucus from the posterior nares.

Face

Red, inflamed, painful swelling of the face, with yellowish blisters secreting a thick yellow fluid. Erysipelatous, inflammatory swelling of the cheeks, with vesicles full of yellowish humour. White, œdema-like swelling of the cheeks.

Mouth and Throat

Toothache increasing when touched or when masticating. The teeth crumble off. Ptyalism preceded by shivering or with inclination to vomit, shuddering and griping in the stomach, the saliva tastes salt. Burning in the throat as from hot coal, extending to the stomach with anguish (as if a flame were rushing out). Dryness of the mouth without thirst.

Stomach and Abdomen

Great thirst for cool drinks. Vomiting (with diarrhœa). Nausea with shaking. Burning (like fire) in the stomach and abdomen. Spasmodic constriction in the stomach. Spasmodic flatulent colic (in the morning in bed) with pain as if the abdomen were pressed asunder, relieve by leaning his head upon the elbows and knees. Sensation of emptiness in the abdomen as after an emetic (morning).

Stool and Anus

Hard stool difficult to pass. Stool like glue after previous itching of the rectum. Violent itching of the rectum during urgent desire for stool, and after the evacuation. Burning sore pain around the anus. Diarrhœa, with tenesmus, burning at the anus, and soreness in the abdomen. Stool first thin, then knotty.

Urinary Organs

Frequent desire to urinate with slight discharge of urine. White sediment in the urine. Itching stitch in the external portion of the urethra between the acts of urinating.

Genital Organs

Men. Erection without sexual desire. Discharge of prostatic fluid from a relaxed penis. Voluptuous itching of the prepuce.

Respiratory Organs

Oppression of breathing, as if the chest were not wide enough, with tension in the pectoral muscles, especially when turning the body to the right side. Stitches in the left side of the chest, during rest ; better during motion. Sensation as if the left lobe of the lung were adhering. Warm feeling in the middle of the chest, as if hot food had been swallowed. Dry hollow cough from tickling in the chest or throat. Dry cough day and night, expectoration copious only in the morning.

Extremities

Upper. Scarlet-red streaks on the (left) forearm, itching when touched. Paralytic tightness in the shoulder-joint (in the morning) worse on moving the arm. Pain as from a sprain in the (right) upper arm when moving the arm. Cramp pain in the muscles of the right hand, when writing. Lower. Pain as if sprained in the hip-joint (on moving). Burning pain at night in the femur, and hip-joint. Pain as ; loin a sprain in the left thigh ; worse when walking, disappears ; when standing. Cold perspiration of the legs in the morning. Great weakness of the legs. Sore pain in the (right) heel, when walking in the open air. The feet go to sleep frequently when sitting.

Sleep

Sleepiness during the day-drowsiness after dinner. Sleeps with his arms extended over his head.

Generalities

Paralytic weakness in the joints, especially felt when beginning to move. Burning pain in the internal organs. Rheumatic pains worse when at rest.

Fever

Chilliness and coldness predominate. Chilliness when beginning to cat and when walking in the open (not cold) air. Chilliness with perspiration. Chill over the upper part of the body with heat of the cheeks. The body is cold, with internal burning heat. Heat with aversion to be dressed, the clothing feels heavy -Heat only on the head. Perspiration in the morning in bed. Cold perspiration on the legs (in the morning).

Skin

Burning in the bones. Caries. Cold gangrene. Old, torpid ulcers. Blood-boils. Warts. Burning itching which induces scratching.

Conditions

Euphorbium officinarum. Gum Euphorbium. The resinous exudation or juice of Euphorbia resinifera. exported from Morocco. Euphorbia resinifera is a cactus-like plant of the Euphorbiaceæ.

Characteristics

Gum euphorbium is one of the remedies of Hahnemann's chronic diseases. It is the principal member of the group of Euphorbian drugs, and should be studied with Croton tiglium and Ricinus . Like these it produces gastro-intestinal irritation and all degrees of irritation of the skin. It also affects the eyes, teeth, and bones. Burning pains in the bones is an indication, and along with Euphorb. heterodoxa it is a remedy for the pains of cancer. (In a desperate case of sarcoma of the pelvic bones under my care nothing gave greater relief to the pains than repeated doses of Euphorb . 6.) Painfulness of the coccyx. Caries. Old torpid ulcers. Hartmann says Euphorb . often affords excellent service in gangrene of internal parts, "especially when consequent on inflammation of the stomach or bowels, &c., and the temperature of the body is continually diminishing, a great degree of torpor being present and the affected parts without sensation." Gangrene of old persons. Erysipelas bullosa. Burning, which characterises the Euphorbias generally, is well marked in this. Among the peculiar sensations are: Sensation, as if teeth were being screwed together. Jerking in tooth as if it would be torn out. Taste as if mouth were lined with rancid grease. Burning in throat as from a hot coal. As if flames were rushing out of mouth and throat. Feeling in middle of chest as if hot food had been swallowed. As if left lobe of lung were adhering. (Münninghoff records a case in which the patient had two violent attacks of night cough. They occurred as soon as she touched the bed in lying down, and continued as long as she remained in it. Accompanying symptoms were: Pain in right temple, cold feet, and pain in heel. After failure of many remedies Euphorb. off . Ø, one drop in a glass of water, to be sipped occasionally, gave instant relief; but she had to continue the remedy or the cough returned.) Sudden starting up in bed as from an electric shock. As if a thin cord lay under the skin. Prostration is present as with the other Euphorbias; but Euphorbium has, in addition, periodic cramp, writer's cramp, and convulsions with loss of consciousness. Most symptoms are < at night and in the morning. Rest < , motion > . Paralytic weakness in joints < on beginning to move. Painfulness of coccyx, < on rising from sitting. Erysipelatous swelling of the cheek, with eruption of yellowish vesicles (full of yellowish humour), and piercing and digging pain. ─ Red, inflamed, painful swelling of the face, with yellowish blisters secreting a thick yellow fluid. ─ Pale (white œdema-like) swelling of the cheek. ─ Burning pain in the face.

Teeth

Pressive, shooting toothache, or with piercing pain, aggravated by contact or mastication, or else at the beginning of a meal, with shivering and pain in the head, and in the cheek-bones. ─ Brittleness of the teeth.

Mouth

Dryness of the mouth, without thirst. ─ Salivation with shuddering, inclination to vomit, and pinchings in the stomach. ─ Saltness of the saliva.

Throat

Burning pain from the throat (as from a hot coal) to the stomach, accompanied by heat (as if a flame were rushing out), anxiety, trembling, and water-brash.

Stomach

Sickly, rancid, bitter taste. ─ Strong thirst for cold drinks. ─ Empty risings. ─ Hiccough. ─ Water-brash, with heat, anxiety, and trembling. ─ Vomiting (with diarrhœa). ─ Pain, as from a bruise, in the stomach. ─ Relaxation and flaccidity of the stomach, with retraction of the abdomen. ─ Contractive cramps in the stomach. ─ Pinchings, and sensation of clawing in the stomach. ─ Burning pain in the stomach and in the epigastrium. ─ Inflammation of the stomach.

Stool and Anus

Characteristic

In the terrible burning pain as if a live coal were on or in the parts, of cancer, carbuncle or erysipelas, when Arsenicum or Anthracinum fails to relieve.

Burning in caries and necrosis of bones.

Erysipelas bulbosa, vesicles as large as peas filled with yellow liquid.

In gangrene or blood boils of old persons.

Old, torpid, indolent ulcers, with biting, lancinating, lacerating pains; < in morning, on becoming heated near the fire, lying down, changing position, beginning to move, from touch; > from motion and walking.

Aggravation

On becoming heated; lying; beginning to move; changing position.

Time

Usually a morning paroxysm.

Chill

Of the whole body in the morning; while walking in the open air; when beginning to eat (Bell.—after eating, Kali c., Nux). The body is cold with internal burning heat.
