General

Has a marked action on the skin, heart and nervous system, producing and curing paralytic conditions with cramp-like contractions of upper extremities. Hemiplegia. Difficult articulation.

Mind

Memory weak; slow perception. Melancholy, with obstinate constipation.

Head

Vertigo and diplopia, when looking down. Vertigo, when looking fixedly at an object, and on rising in bed. Pain in brain, as if head would burst. Numb feeling. Dull, unable to think. Indolence. Eruption on scalp. Humid, fetid spots behind ears (Graph; Petrol) and occiput, with red, rough, herpetic spots in front. Corrosive itching on forehead and edge of hair; worse, heat.

Eyes

Can see objects only when looking at them sideways. Eyes water on reading. Double vision. Sensation as if eyes were drawn back into the head.

Face

Pale, sunken, with blue rings around eyes (Phos ac).

Stomach

Canine hunger, with hurried eating, without appetite. Thirst. Empty belching. Vomiting of food; greenish water. Throbbing in pit.

Abdomen

Borborygmus, with profuse, fetid flatus. Gnawing around navel. Ineffectual urging. Undigested feces. Stool passes when emitting flatus. Burning pain in anus.

Chest

Oppression as from a weight; asthmatic when lying down. Palpitation, with weakness and empty feeling in chest. Dyspnœa. Obtuse stitches in chest.

Extremities

Modalities

Worse, undressing, rest, friction of clothes.

Relationship

Compare: Con; Nat m; Rhus; Caust; Lathyr. Oleander contains Oleandrin and also Nerein which latter is said to be closely related if not identical with Digitalin. The pulse becomes slower, more regular, more powerful. Diuresis; palpitation, œdema and dyspnœa of valvular disease disappear.

Antidotes: Camph; Sulph.

Third to thirtieth potency.

Mind and Disposition

Absence of mind, want of attention. Slowness of perception. Indolence, aversion to do any thing.

Head

Vertigo when rising from bed, or if looking fixedly at any object, or when looking down while standing. Heaviness of the head ; better when lying down. Biting-itching on the scalp, as from vermin, principally on the back part of the head and behind the ears ; relieved when first scratching it, which is followed by burning and soreness, which gives place to biting-itching ; worse in the evening when undressing. Humid, scaly, biting-itching eruption on the head, especially on the back part of the head.

Eyes

When reading ; burning and tension in the eyelids ; lachrymation. Double vision.

Ears

Herpes and ulcers on and around the ears.

Face

Pale, sunken face in the morning with blue rings around the eyes. Alternate paleness and dark redness of the face. Numbness of the upper lip.

Mouth and Throat

Toothache only when masticating. Drawing in the molar teeth at night when lying down, with anxiety, nausea and frequent micturition. Bluish-white gums. The papillæ are elevated, dirty-white. Loss of speech. Dryness of the mouth and white tongue.

Stomach and Abdomen

Ravenous hunger with trembling of the hands and hasty eating without appetite. Much thirst, especially for cold water. Violent empty eructations, while eating. Vomiting of food and bitter greenish water. After vomiting ravenous hunger and thirst. Sensation of emptiness in the stomach, even after eating. Beating and pulsation in the pit of the stomach as if the beats of the heart were felt through the whole thorax. Stitches and gnawing about the navel. Rolling and rumbling in the intestines, with emission of a great quantity of fetid flatulence.

Stool and Anus

Ineffectual urging to stool. Almost involuntary discharge of undigested stool. The food which he had taken on the previous day passes off undigested and almost without effort ; imagines he is only emitting flatulence. Chronic diarrhœa ; undigested food, worse in the morning. Burning at the anus before and after the stool.

Urinary Organs

Urinary secretions increased with frequent micturition, especially after drinking coffee. Brown, burning urine, depositing a white sediment.

Respiratory Organs

Viscid mucus in the trachea. Oppressed breathing when lying, as if the chest were too narrow, with long, deep breathing. Violent shaking cough from tickling in the larynx. Sensation of emptiness and coldness in the chest. Dull stitches in the left side of the chest and in the sternum, worse when taking a long breath. Violent, anxious palpitation of the heart ; the chest feels expanded.

Extremities

Upper. Swelling and stiffness of the fingers, with burning pains. The veins on the hands are swollen. Lower. Paralysis of the legs and feet ; painless. Great, weakness of the legs, especially of the knees. Constant cold feet. Buzzing sensation in the legs, especially the soles of the feet.

Generalities

Painless stiffness and paralysis of the limbs. Insensibility of the whole body. Want of animal heat in the limbs. Painless paralysis. Faintish weakness of the whole body ; when standing trembling of the knees, when writing trembling of the hands. Fainting as from weakness, relieved by perspiration.

Sleep

Frequent yawning, with chilliness and trembling of the muscles. Restless, voluptuous dreams and frequent waking.

Fever

Pulse very changeable and irregular ; weak and slow in the morning, full and rapid in the evening. Chilliness and chills over the whole body, periodically, with heat of the face and coldness of the hands. Chilliness and want of animal heat. External chilliness with internal heat without thirst. Flushes of heat periodically, especially from bodily or mental exertion.

Characteristics

Oleander , which is one of the remedies proved by Hahnemann, has been recognised as a powerful poison from antiquity. In the Cape de Verde Islands the petals of Olean . blossoms are used with dried orange-peel in all kinds of fevers to promote perspiration and drive out the rash. In animals poisoned by it, the heart becomes paralysed, first the auricles, then the entire heart. Goullon ( H. R ., xii. 402) refers to poisoning cases in which "anguish, inflammation of the stomach, diarrhœa, swoons," and even death had occurred. "Palpitation of the heart, anxiety, insomnia, and unconsciousness," were observed by Petrus de Alvano, and Morgagni noted "vomiting, thirst, slumbering, speechlessness, and death." Goullon also quotes instances of suffering from exhalations of the flowers, and even from the plants when not in flower. A young man, 18, fell sick, had attacks of vertigo, suffered from great weakness of the muscles, headache > in evening, < every morning after waking, which was a difficult process. In addition: pale face; white-coated tongue; slow pulse. On leaving for change of air he soon got quite well; but ill again as soon as he returned. Some oleanders in his bedroom were then suspected by his doctor, and on their removal all the trouble vanished. The doctor then recalled that when a student he had some oleanders before his windows, and in autumn, when the nights were cold, be took them into his bedroom, with this result: On waking in the morning heavy head and sensation of weariness, could only leave his bed by great exertion. As soon as he put his foot to the ground was seized with vertigo and reeled. Having traced this to the oleanders, he purposely repeated the experiment, and always with the same result. Hahnemann says of Olean .: "It will be found to be, if not a complete remedy, yet an indispensable intermediate remedy in some kinds of mental derangements, e.g ., absence of mind, and in certain kinds of painless paralysis, in eruptions on the head, and in some external head affections." Experience has confirmed the truth of these remarks, and more especially of the latter part of them. Olean . is in the front rank of remedies affecting the scalp, more particularly the back part of the scalp or commencing there. "Desquamation of the epidermis of the scalp;" "violent gnawing itching on the scalp, as from lice; after scratching, a smarting as if scratched raw" are symptoms which have been repeatedly verified by cures, and I have confirmed Cooper's experience in one very bad case, in a schoolboy, that a single dose of the Ø may give the best possible result in such cases. The condition was: Head very sore and irritable; covered with crusts; sore to touch. Glands in neck swollen and sore to touch. Olean . Ø two drops in a powder at bedtime on November 14th. On November 27th an aggravation was reported, and the eruption had spread from the head to the back. From this time rapid improvement set in. ─ The skin generally of Olean . is very sensitive and easily chafed and chapped, and this occurring concomitantly with other Olean . conditions (for example, gastro-enteritis), forms a strong indication. The paralytic symptoms of Olean . are in constant evidence. Involuntary evacuation of fæces and urine. The digestion is paralysed, and the food passes completely undigested. Infants soil their diapers every time they pass flatus. Momentary loss of sight. Peculiar sensations , suggestive of paralysis, are: Buzzing and humming sensations in the body. Numb or painless paralysed feeling as if inner parts were distended. Pulsations in outer parts. Gnawing itching; biting or pungent pain after scratching. Numbness of skin, or itching numbness. Olean . corresponds to "trembling after nursing" in nursing women; to weak memory and slow perception; to functional paralysis. The headaches are mostly pressive and stupefying. Pressure as if a hundredweight were pressing brain forward, and as if everything would come out at forehead. A curious feature in connection with some of the headaches is that they are > by looking cross-eyed; or by looking sideways. This is a clinical observation well verified. There is also cloudiness of vision, < by looking sideways. Eyes distorted. Olean . should cure some cases of strabismus. The left side is most affected; violent contraction of muscles, < left side. Numbness of upper and lower extremities has been frequently confirmed. A case of poisoning is recorded ( H. W ., xxxiii. 9, from Amer. Hom .) in which a boy of four put a broken Oleander leaf into his mouth, but quickly spat it out. In a few minutes the tongue became red and raw where the leaf had touched it. The patch, one inch by one half inch, involving the side and part of dorsum of tongue, appeared denuded, and this appearance remained a year later. Ten months after the occurrence, general roughness of the skin had developed, with a papulo-pustular eruption on ankles and calves. The symptoms are < (after first > ) by scratching; by rubbing. < In open air; by draught of air. Getting out of bed > toothache. There is thirst for cold water. Motion > stiffness of thighs. Mastication < toothache and headache. Looking down < (vertigo, &c.). Looking sideways < dim vision; > headache. Squinting > headache. Rising up < headache; vertigo. Stooping pain over heart.

Relations

(bowels act as soon as patient drinks), Chi. (watery stool containing undigested food; very debilitating; stools may escape involuntarily after a meal; caused or < by eating fruits), Apis, Pho., and Pho. ac. (wide-open anus). In crusta lactea, Mez., Sul., Viol. t., Vinca min., Melitag. Gone feeling, Sep. (Olean. has with it sense of distension in abdomen, chest feels empty and cold).

Mind

Sadness, and want of self-confidence. ─ Repugnance to labour and great indolence. ─ Irascibility, moroseness, and ill-humour. ─ Temper which can bear no contradiction. ─ Fits of passion, followed by speedy repentance. ─ Weakness of memory. ─ Slowness of perception. ─ Great abstraction and inattention. ─ Confusion when reading; difficulty of grasping the connection when reading a long sentence. ─ Loss of memory. ─ Giddiness. ─ Dulness of intellect, with difficult conception. ─ Poetical reveries concerning the future. ─ Immediately walked five yards and fell senseless (after an ounce of expressed juice).

Head

Ears

Acute aching in ears. ─ Cramp-like drawing in ear. ─ Singing, tinkling, and rumbling in ears. ─ Red and rough tettery spots in fore part of ear, with fetid running (ulcers) behind (and around) ears.

Nose

Stupefying and dull pressure in nose. ─ Itching round nose.

Face

Face pale and wan (sunken in the morning), with blue circles round the eyes. ─ Dull and stupefying pressure in the bones of the face, and esp. in the zygomatic process, extending deeply into the head. ─ Heat of cheeks without redness, and vice versâ . ─ Paleness, alternately with deep redness, of face. ─ Red swelling of face, round eyes. ─ Tuberculous eruption on face and forehead. ─ Lips brownish and dry. ─ Sensation of numbness and swelling in upper lip. ─ Swelling round commissures of lips. ─ Lower jaw trembles with yawning. ─ Stiffness of muscles of jaws.

Teeth

Toothache (only) during mastication, with incisive pressure. ─ Tearing and drawing in teeth (molar; l. upper second bicuspid), sometimes at night, but only in bed (with anxiety, nausea, and frequent micturition), and which disappear on getting up. ─ Sensation of looseness in teeth, with gums of a bluish white.

Mouth

Dryness of mouth, and tongue loaded with a white coating. ─ Rough, foul, white tongue, with raised papillæ. ─ Tongue red and raw where touched with Oleander leaf; the patch involved the side and part of upper surface, and was still present a year after. ─ Loss of speech.

Throat

Burning pain in throat. ─ Numb sensation ascending from throat externally to head. ─ Sensation as if a cool wind were blowing on l. side of throat. ─ Sharp pressive pain on l. side of throat, near Adam's apple. ─ Irritation of pharynx. ─ Pain as of a dull point pressing on œsophagus (r. side); cervical muscles also painful to external pressure.

Appetite

All food has a mawkish (flat) and insipid taste (in evening). ─ Clammy taste in mouth. ─ Bulimy, with tremor of hands, from eager craving for food, often with absence of appetite. ─ Violent empty eructations, while eating. ─ Thirst, esp. for cold water. ─ Dizziness while eating greedily at noon. ─ Empty goneness after eating, > by brandy.

Stomach

Risings of a putrid smell. ─ Violent, empty risings, sometimes after a meal. ─ Nausea, with inclination to vomit, accumulation of saliva in mouth, followed by violent hunger. ─ Sickness and prostration follow the dose; feels queer all next day (cure followed. ─ R. T. C.). ─ Vomiting of food, or of bitter serum, of a yellowish-green colour. ─ After vomiting ravenous hunger and thirst, with great weakness over whole body. ─ Sensation of emptiness in stomach, with fulness of abdomen. ─ Beatings and pulsations in epigastrium, as from being over-heated. ─ Beating and pulsation in pit of stomach as if the beats of the heart were felt through whole thorax.

Abdomen

Pinchings in the abdomen, as if caused by diarrhœa. ─ Shootings and gnawings in the abdomen. ─ Stitches and gnawing about the navel. ─ Sensation of emptiness and weakness in the intestines. ─ Gurgling and borborygmi in the abdomen, with excessive emission of flatus of a putrid smell.

Stool and Anus

Ineffectual want to evacuate. ─ Liquid, soft, yellow fæces. ─ First diarrhœa, then hard, difficult stools; during pregnancy. ─ Evacuation of the food which he had taken on the previous day. ─ Evacuation, almost involuntary, of undigested matter; imagines he is only emitting flatulence. ─ Chronic diarrhœa; undigested food, < in morning. ─ Burning pain in anus before and after evacuation, and at other times. ─ Involuntary stools; in children when passing flatus (every time they pass wind they soil the diaper).

Urinary Organs

Increased secretion of urine. ─ Brownish, burning urine, with whitish sediment. ─ Frequent emission of urine, esp. after partaking of coffee. ─ Nausea and frequent micturition at night when lying down, with anxiety and drawing in molar teeth.

Female Sexual Organs

After nursing, tremors; so weak she can scarcely walk across the room.

Respiratory Organs

Short, shaking cough, provoked by a tickling in pharynx. ─ Violent shaking cough from tickling in larynx. ─ Accumulation of viscid mucus in trachea.

Chest

Oppression of chest when lying down, with deep and slow respiration. ─ Weak respiration. ─ Oppressive and compressive pain, or sensation of emptiness in chest. ─ Dull or tensive lancinations in chest, in sternum, and sides (l.), esp. on taking a full inspiration (and expiration). ─ Sensation of coldness in chest. ─ Stitches in diaphragm.

Heart and Pulse

Drawings about heart, < by stooping, and lasting during expiration. ─ Violent and sometimes anxious palpitation of heart, with a sensation as if chest were dilating. ─ Pulse very changeable and irregular; weak and slow in morning, full and rapid in evening. ─ (A principal heart remedy. ─ R. T. C.).

Neck and Back

Violent pulsation of the carotids. ─ Tearing in nape in bed in evening. ─ Pain in back as from a strain. ─ Tensive, burning, and acute lancinations in back.

Limbs

Severe cramps in limbs. ─ Numbness of upper and lower limbs.

Upper Limbs

Wrenching pain in arms on lifting them. ─ Jerking in muscles of arms. ─ Cramp-like drawings and tearing in arms and fingers. ─ Dull aching in forearms, hands, and fingers, as if caused by a blow or a bruise. ─ Veins of hands swollen. ─ Swelling and rigidity of fingers, with burning pain. ─ Fingers rigid and thumbs turned into palms.

Lower Limbs

Contusive pain in buttocks. ─ Sensation of weakness in thighs, legs, feet, and soles, as if those parts were benumbed. ─ Great weakness of knees. ─ Dull aching, and sometimes shooting in thighs, feet, and toes. ─ Paralysis of legs and feet; painless. ─ L. knee that had stiffened becomes supple (in a case of general paralysis of insane. ─ R. Generalities

Mind

Weak memory ; absence of mind, want of attention.
Slowness of perception ; difficult comprehension of what he reads, particularly if he makes great efforts to understand, his thoughts then become confused.
After mental exertion, flushes of heat.
Indolence, aversion to do anything.
Cannot bear contradiction, becomes enraged.
Despondency and lack of self-confidence.
Melancholy, with obstinate constipation.
Peevish, fretful, out of humor with everything.

Sensorium

Vertigo : for a long time before paralysis : when rising from bed ; when looking fixedly, or looking down while standing ; when walking in open air ; he stood firmly, but the things around him, trees and men, seemed to be moving as in a confused dance, sight became obscured, scintillations before eyes resembling dazzling of snow, giddiness and diplopia when looking down ; in forehead, and staggering of lower limbs, as if too weak ; loss of consciousness ; resulting from weakness.
Heaviness of head ; > when lying down.
Fainting as from weakness ; relieved by sweat.
Depression of sensorium.

Inner head

Pressive pain from within outward, in forehead.
Pain in forehead as if it would split.
Pressive pain in brain.
Headache improved by looking cross-eyed.
Sensation of tightness around head, which occasions a feeling of stupefaction rather than pain.

Outer head

Biting-itching on scalp, as from vermin, < back part of head and behind ears ; > when first scratching it, followed by burning and soreness, which gives place to biting-itching ; < in evening when undressing.
Humid, scaly, biting, itching eruption, especially on back part of head.
Desquamation of epidermis of scalp.
Vesicular eruptions about head of children, with smooth, shining surface, and drops of serum standing out here and there. θ Eczema.
Eruption on scalp and back of ears, simulating that of crusta lactea, oozing a fluid and breeding vermin.

Sight and eyes

Momentary loss of sight.
Double vision.
Darkness before eyes when looking sideways.
When reading, burning and tension in eyelids ; lachrymation.
Eyes sunken ; blue color about eyes.

Hearing and ears

Cramplike drawing in outer ear.
Herpes and ulcers in and around ears.
Oozing of serum from behind ears. θ Eczema.

Upper face

Pale, sunken face in morning, with blue rings around eyes.
Alternate paleness and dark redness of face.
Tuberculous eruption on face and forehead.

Lower face

Numbness of upper lip.
Foaming at mouth.

Teeth and gums

Toothache only when masticating.
Drawing in molar teeth at night when lying down, with anxiety, nausea and frequent micturition.
Pain in second bicuspid in left upper jaw, very bad at night, preventing sleep, > getting out of bed ; frequent micturition ; heat of left cheek.
Bluish-white gums.

Taste, speech, tongue

Loss of speech.
Tongue : rough, dirty white, with elevated papillæ ; coated white, with dryness of mouth.
In evening all food has a flat and nauseous taste.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Ravenous hunger, with trembling of hands and hasty eating, without appetite.
Much thirst, especially for cold water.
Desire for brandy ; aversion to cheese.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Violent empty eructations, while eating.
Nausea and vomiting.
Vomiting : of food, bitter greenish water ; mucous ; of sour liquid food.
After vomiting, ravenous hunger and thirst.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Pulsation in pit of stomach, as if beats of heart were felt through whole thorax.
Emptiness in pit of stomach, even after eating ; from nursing.
Sinking in pit of stomach, suddenly, with nausea or vomiting ; wants brandy, which relieves.
Extreme debility of digestive power.

Abdomen and loins

Stitches and gnawing about navel.
Rolling and rumbling in intestines, with emission of a great quantity of fetid flatus.
Affection of the mesenteric glands, with swelling, hardness and tension of abdomen and frequent lienteric stools. θ Favus.

Stools and rectum

Ineffectual urging to stool.
Emission of flatus smelling like rotten eggs.
Stools : thin ; yellow ; undigested ; involuntary, when emitting flatus ; sour, liquid.
Passes food undigested in morning which he ate the day before.
First diarrhœa, then hard, difficult stools ; during pregnancy.
Stool and urine involuntary.
Diarrhœa with intestinal ulcers. θ Tuberculosis.
Children much troubled with soiling of clothes when passing flatus.
Burning at anus before and after stool.

Urinary organs

Frequent profuse urination, especially after drinking coffee.
Urine brown, burning, with whitish sediment.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Viscid mucus in trachea.

Respiration

Oppressed breathing while lying ; also as if chest were too narrow, with long, deep breathing ; as if every breath were his last.
Stertorous breathing.

Cough

Violent, shaking cough, from tickling in larynx.

Inner chest and lungs

Dull stitches in left chest, continuing during and in exhalation.
Sensation of emptiness and coldness in chest.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Dull drawing pain over heart, < when stooping.
Palpitation with weakness and empty feeling of chest, and at same time fulness in pit of stomach.
Anxious palpitation ; chest feels expanded.
Pulse : quick, skin hot ; changeable, irregular ; weak and slow mornings, full and rapid evenings.

Outer chest

Dull, continuous stitch in sternum.

Upper limbs

Hands tremble when writing.
Fingers stiff and swollen, with burning pains.
Veins on hands swollen.
Itch-like eruption on inside of wrist and between fingers.

Lower limbs

Itch-like eruption between nates.
Paralysis of legs and feet ; painless.
Great weakness of legs, especially knees.
Weakness of thighs and legs and a sensation in forepart of feet, mostly in soles, as if asleep, while walking.
Trembling knees, when standing.
Vesicles on thighs.
Buzzing sensation in legs, especially in soles of feet.
Feet constantly cold.

Limbs in general

Painless stiffness and paralysis of limbs.
Want of animal heat in limbs.

Rest. position. motion

Rest : febrile shivering all over body.
Lying down : heaviness > ; toothache ; oppressive breathing.
Rising from bed : vertigo.
Stooping : pain over heart.
Standing : looking down, vertigo ; trembling of knees.
Motion : constant, > stiffness of thighs ; febrile shivering all over body.
Exertion : flushes of heat <.
Masticating : toothache.
Writing : trembling of hands.
Walking : vertigo ; feet as if asleep.

Nerves

Hyperesthesia or insensibility of whole body.
Loss of muscular power ; trembling.
Faintish weakness of whole body ; when standing, trembling of knees ; when writing, trembling of hands.
Fainting as from weakness ; > by perspiration.
Immediately after nursing is seized with tremor and is so weak that she is scarcely able to walk across room.
Painless paralysis.
Stiffness and coldness of limbs.
Violent spasmodic contractions of muscles ; more those of upper part of body and of left side.

Sleep

Yawning : with trembling of lower jaw ; with chilliness and trembling of muscles.
Restless sleep, frequent waking.
Voluptuous dreams, with seminal emissions.

Time

Morning : pale, sunken face ; passes food eaten day before undigested ; pulse weak and slow.
Evening : biting-itching on scalp < ; food has flat taste.
Night : drawing in molar teeth ; toothache <.

Temperature and weather

Open air : walking, vertigo.
Getting out of bed : toothache >.
Draft of air : caused rheumatism.
Cold water : thirst.

Fever

Chilliness, want of animal heat, or external chill, internal heat ; no thirst.
Chill all over, periodically ; face hot, hands cold.
Febrile shivering all over body, without thirst and without subsequent heat, during rest and motion.
Periodical flushes of heat ; < after bodily or mental exertion.
Want of perspiration.

Periodical : flushes of heat.

Locality and direction

Right : rheumatic pains in shoulder.
Left : pains in tooth in upper jaw ; heat of cheek ; dull stitches in chest ; violent contractions of muscles, < l. side.
Within outward : pressive pain in forehead.

Sensations

As if inner parts were distended ; pulsations in outer parts ; as if forehead would split ; as if beats of heart were felt through whole thorax ; as if chest were too narrow ; as if every breath were his last ; forepart of feet as if asleep, chest as if expanded.

Touch. passive motion. injuries

Scratching : eruption first >, then burning.
Friction : on skin causes soreness and chapping.

Skin

Itching here and there over body, so that he was obliged to scratch.
Biting-itching all over body, as from an eruption, on undressing, compelling him to scratch.
Intense itching and an insupportable nocturnal burning after scratching ; affection of mesenteric glands with swelling, hardness and tension of abdomen and frequently loose and undigested stools.
Very sensitive skin, so that very slight friction causes soreness and chafing, especially about neck, or between scrotum and thighs.
Chapping of skin.
Skin yellow.
Violent itching eruption, bleeding, oozing out a fluid, forming scabs ; eczema.
Scurfy pimples ; itchlike eruption.

Stage of life, constitution

Girl, æt. 21 ; headache.
Man, æt. 44, merchant, five feet ten inches in height, sallow complexion, nervo-bilious temperament, ill a year and a half and considered himself incurable, father subject to rheumatism ; lienteric stools ; rheumatism.
