Keynote

Adapted to anaemic debilitated subjects of rheumatic diathesis; to scrofulous children afflicted with ascarides and lumbrici (Cina, Stan.). Persons with light hair; pale, thin, bloated, weak; wrinkled, yellow, earthy skin. Body painfully sensitive to touch; part touched feels chilly; touch sends shudder through the whole frame (Kali c.). Afraid of sharp, pointed things, pins, needles, etc. Rheumatic affections of heart (Kali, Led., Naja); systolic blowing at apex. Aneurism. Nervous headache; periodical, beginning in morning at base of brain, spreading over the head and locating in eye, orbit and temple of left side (right side, Sang., Sil.); pain, pulsating, violent, throbbing. Scirrhus of sigmoid or rectum, atrocious unbearable pain (Alumen). Dyspnoea: must lie on right side ro with head high (Cac., Spong.); pains in chest are stitching, needle-like. Eyes

Neuralgia of the eyes, especially where there is great soreness, and can scarcely bear a touch; affections of the eyeball; eyelids; optic nerve; dilated pupils; ocular illusions--sees strange things, fiery, etc. (Cyclamen, when with any trouble as headache, sick stomach etc., one always sees countless stars).

Ears

Earache with an ichorous, scalding discharge; hearing very sensitive; noise in the ear as of something fluttering.

Heart

In affections of the heart, particularly if the whole left side is sore from the affection, and may be the eyes also from sympathy; purring of the heart as of a cat; palpitation of the heart with anguish; trembling pulsation of the heart; sympathy of the chest with heart troubles.

Sensations

Very violent neuralgia, followed by an extreme soreness; boring pains; pain as if parts were pushed or pressed asunder, or as if they would burst; sensation of extension in size; feeling as of a lump in the inner parts; darting pains in inner and outer parts; darting pain from within outward; in the joints; pains of a dragging or rooting character.

Fever

Chilliness without thirst; heat and perspiration without thirst.

Generalities

Affections in general of the right side of the face and nose; stool with maw worms (Oxyuris vermicularis); discharge of urine too copious; sensitiveness of outer parts; aversion to washing; trembling pulse that can scarcely be counted.

Red line symptom

Neuralgia of the fifth pair of nerves, tearing, shooting, burning into the eye, malar bone and teeth, periodical from morning until sunset, worse at noon, from noise, motion of jarring. Intolerable pressive pain in the eyeballs, they feel too large for their orbits, worse in turning the eyes. Rheumatic ophthalmia; pains are sharp and tearing, with pressure in the eyeballs. Throbbing, tearing toothache, which is especially aggravated by cold water, disappearing when lying down. Dyspnoea, can lie only on right side, with trunk raised, the least motion produces great suffocation, with anxiety and palpitation of the heart. Spigelia is an important remedy in pericarditis and other diseases of the heart, because the provings were conducted with the greatest regard for objective symptoms and the subjective symptoms are by innumerable confirmations proved to be correct (C. Hering).

Has marked elective affinity for the eye, heart, and nervous system. Neuralgia of the fifth nerve is very prominent in its effects. Is especially adapted to anæmic, debilitated, rheumatic, and scrofulous subjects. Stabbing pains. Heart affections and neuralgia. Very sensitive to touch. Parts feel chilly; send shudder through frame. A remedy for symptoms due to the presence of worms. Child refers to the navel as the most painful part (Granat; Nux mosch).

Mind

Afraid of sharp, pointed things, pins, needles, etc.

Head

Pain beneath frontal eminence and temples, extending to eyes (Onos). Semi-lateral, involving left eye; pain violent, throbbing; worse, making a false step. Pain as if a band around head (Carbol ac; Cact; Gels). Vertigo, hearing exalted.

Eyes

Feel too large; pressive pain on turning them. Pupils dilated; photophobia; rheumatic ophthalmia. Severe pain in and around eyes, extending deep into socket. Ciliary neuralgia, a true neuritis.

Nose

Forepart of nose always dry; discharge through posterior nares chronic catarrh, with post-nasal dropping of bland mucus.

Mouth

Tongue fissured, painful. Tearing toothache; worse, after eating and cold. Foul odor from mouth. Offensive taste.

Face

Prosopalgia, involving eye, zygoma, cheek, teeth, temple, worse, stooping, touch, from morning until sunset.

Heart

Violent palpitation. Præcordial pain and great aggravation from movement. Frequent attacks of palpitation, especially with foul odor from mouth. Pulse weak and irregular. Pericarditis, with sticking pains, palpitation, dyspnœa. Neuralgia extending to arm or both arms. Angina pectoris. Craving for hot water which relieves. Leaders

Violent beating of the heart, shakes the chest; sometimes audible several inches away.

Left-sided neuralgias of head, face and eyes; pains increase and decrease with the rising and setting sun; watering of the eye, on affected side.

In this we have another valuable, heart remedy. The pains in the heart in this remedy are as severe as those under Cactus and the action is more violent than under either Cactus or Digitalis. It is so violent as often to be visible to the eye through the clothes, shaking the whole chest, and the sounds are often audible several inches away. It is not only a very valuable remedy in acute attacks of the heart but in chronic valvular affections following the acute attack, where we have the loud blowing sounds and attacks of violent palpitation. I have seen the violent attacks of palpitation quickly relieved, and not only that, but the valvular troubles gradually and perfectly cured, under the action of this remedy. In these troubles the patient can often only lie on the right side (Phos., Nat. mur.), or with the head very high; least motion < (Naja). It is one of our best remedies for neuralgic affections of the head, face, and eyes.

The headaches are generally one-sided, beginning in the occiput and extending forward, and settling over the left eye (right, Sang. and Silicea). They are aggravated by the least noise or jar. They increase with the rising of the sun and decrease with its going down (Natrum mur., Tabacum), and the eye on the affected side often runs clear water. (Chelidon. maj., right side with water gushing out).

Spigelia is very useful in ciliary neuralgia, the pain being of the same character as the headaches. The pains are also stabbing, running through into the back of the head, or like Actæa, they press outward, as if the eyeballs were too large for the sockets (Comocladia).

In any or all of the above-named affections, for which Spigelia is so efficacious, the patient is made worse from motion, noise, inspiration or moving the eyes, and especially in cold, damp, rainy weather. It makes us think of Bryonia, Kalmia and Natrum mur., and Actæa (motion), Belladonna (noise), and China (touch, especially light touch). It is certainly a very valuable remedy, though not one, so far as known, of very wide range of action.

Mind and Disposition

Restlessness, with anxiety and great solicitude for the future. Difficulty of thinking and disinclination to mental exertion. Weakness of memory.

Head

Giddiness when looking downwards. Vertigo, with nausea. Boring headache, from within to without, in the forehead, vertex, or cerebellum. Pressing headache, principally in the right temple ; worse from the least motion, stooping, noise, and from opening the mouth ; relieved while at rest and lying high with the head. Sensation of soreness in the forehead and vertex. Shaking in the brain ; worse when moving the head or when stepping hard. Tearing in the forehead in paroxysms, with fixed eyes. Headache, beginning in the cerebellum (in the morning), spreading over the left side of the head, causing violent and pulsating pain in the left temple and over the left eye, with stitches in the left eye ; returning periodically. Stitches in the left side of the head and out of the left eye. Painfulness of the cerebellum, with stiffness of the neck. The headaches are aggravated from the least motion and exertion, from stooping, from the least noise, and are relieved when lying high with the head and from washing the head with cold water. Periodical headaches. Tension of the scalp. Sensitiveness of the scalp to the touch.

Eyes

Painfulness of the eyes, deep in the sockets, especially when moving them. Sensation as if the eyes were too large. Pressure in the balls of the eyes, especially when turning them. Stitches in the eyes. Dry heat and burning in the eyes ; is compelled to close them. Redness of the white of the eye ; the vessels strongly injected. Inflammation of the cornea. The eyelids hang down, are hard and immovable. Lachrymation ; tears acrid. Inflammation and ulceration of the eyelids. Weakness of the eyes ; in whatever direction they are turned they remain. Great inclination to wink with the eyes. Far-sightedness.

Ears

Otalgia, with pressing pain, as from a plug. The ears feel as if they were stuffed up. Periodical deafness.

Nose

Tickling and itching in the nose. Herpetic, sore, painful eruption on the nose. Secretion of large quantities of mucus through the posterior nares, the nose being dry.

Face

Pale, bloated and distorted face, especially when awaking from sleep in the morning. Yellow rings around the eyes. Redness of the face ; perspiration on the face. Periodical faceache ; pains burning and tensive, especially in the cheek-bones, above the eyebrows, in the in the left side.

Mouth and Throat

Toothache immediately after eating, or at night, driving one out of bed. Twitching or pulsating toothache in decayed teeth ; aggravated by cold water and from cold air. Putrid, fetid breath. Stinging dryness in the mouth on waking in the morning. White or yellow mucus in the mouth or throat. Blisters on the tongue and in the throat, burning. Cracked tongue.

Stomach and Abdomen

Loss of appetite, with violent thirst. Ravenous hunger, with nausea and thirst. Sensitiveness of the pit of the stomach to the touch. Pressure in the stomach, as from a hard lump. Nausea in the morning, fasting, as if something were rising in the throat from the stomach. Pressing in the region of the navel, as from a hard lump. Stitches in the abdomen. Colic (cutting) pain in the abdomen (from worms). Emission of fetid flatus.

Stool and Anus

Frequent inefficient urging to stool. Discharge of large lumps of mucus without feces. Discharge of feces with worms. Itching and tickling at the anus and in the rectum. Lumbrici, ascarides.

Urinary Organs

Frequent micturition, with profuse discharge. Urine with whitish sediment. Involuntary dripping of urine, with burning in the orifice of the urethra.

Sexual Organs

Erections and voluptuous fancies, but without sexual desire. Tingling around the corona glandis. Swelling of one-half of the corona.

Respiratory Organs

Catarrh with hoarseness ; continuous coryza ; dry heat without thirst ; protruded eyes ; violent headache and weeping. Nightly catarrh with cough (Influenza). Shortness of breath, especially when talking, with redness of the cheeks and lips. Dyspnœa when moving in bed ; can only lie on the right side, or lying very high with the head. Dyspnœa and suffocating attacks on moving and raising the arms up ; violent cough, with dyspnœa. Constriction in the chest, with anxiety and difficulty of breathing. Stitches in the chest worse from the least movement, or when breathing. Sensation of tearing in the chest. Trembling sensation in the chest ; aggravated from the least movement. Stitches in the diaphragm, with dyspnœa. Violent (visible and audible) palpitation of the heart ; aggravated when bending the chest forward. Stitches in the heart. Organic diseases of the heart. (Rubbing, bellows sounds).

Back

Stitches in the back ; also when breathing.

Extremities

Upper. Stitches in the joints of the arms and hands. Hard, burning-itching nodosities in the hands. Lower. Stitches in the joints of the legs and feet and in the thigh. Wart-like excrescences on the toes.

Generalities

Stinging pain in the limbs and principally in the joints. Heaviness and soreness in the body when rising from a seat. Painful sensitiveness of the body to the touch with chilliness on the parts touched, or with tingling running through the whole body.

Sleep

Great sleepiness during the day, even in the morning, with late going to sleep at night. Restless, unrefreshing sleep at night and sleepiness in the morning.

Fever

Pulse irregular, generally strong but slow. Trembling pulse. Chill, frequently returning at the same hour in the morning. Chill alternating with heat or perspiration. Chilliness on some part of the body, on others heat. Chilliness from the least movement. The chill extends from the chest. Heat especially in the back. Flushes of heat at night, with thirst for beer. Heat in the face and on the hands, with chill in the back. At night putrid perspiration with heat at the same time. Clammy perspiration on the hands. Cold perspiration.

Skin

Painful glandular swellings. Pale, wrinkled skin of the body.

Characteristics

Spigelia anthelmia is a common weed in South America.: S. Marylandica , "Pink-root" or "Worm-grass," is a native of the Southern States of North America. Spigel. anth . is an acro-narcotic. It was known in Europe in Hahnemann's time as an anthelmintic, this property of the drug having been learned from the negroes of the Antilles. Hahnemann's proving ( M. M. P .) revealed many other virtues. He says of the plant that it has this peculiarity: the primary action of a single unrepeated dose usually increases somewhat daily during the first seven to ten days, so that pure experiments with it should be conducted with caution seeing that 60, 80, to 100 drops of the tincture produce violent effects even in robust persons. Violence is a note of the Spigelia action. The pains are intense, and it produces pains in all parts. It is a neuralgia remedy par excellence . I was once written to by a patient in the country, and the only definite points that I could make out of the case were that there was neuralgia and that it affected the left side. I ordered Spi ., and it speedily cured. Spi . is more left-sided than right, but by no means exclusively left, sided. The pains are burning, jerking, tearing, pressing and stitching; they radiate and extend to other parts; are < by noise, jar, movement; change of weather ─ especially stormy weather. Head, eyes, face, teeth, and heart are the principal seats of Spi . action. Hochecker ( H. R ., x. 147) relates the case of Miss O., 27, blonde, tall, robust, who had neuralgia for several weeks, without traceable cause. Pains came suddenly, twitching and tearing of left side of face, now in ear, then in lower jaw, and were particularly < by mastication. A peculiarity was that whenever the pains were about to commence a diarrhœa set in. A single powder of Spi . 6 cured. Hochecker also cured with Spi . 3, 6, 10, and 20 a case of tic-douloureux of right side of fifteen months' duration. In this case each lower attenuation after first relieving caused an aggravation. That was why the attenuations were successively raised. Spi . 20 completed the cure. This patient had dark hair and dark complexion. She attributed her trouble to taking cold in a draught when heated by dancing. Sensitiveness to cold, to wet and stormy weather, is one of the notes of Spi . The left-sidedness of Spi . is shown in its affinity for the heart. Sometimes the heart, eyes, and head are affected together. A case is quoted in A. H . (xxii. 417) in which there were darting and aching pains in head, nose, and eyes, and similar pains about the heart with slow, irregular action, but no murmur. Vertigo on stooping and heat of head. Sudden pains at bottom of back. The pains were < night and morning and in damp weather. In one prover the accustomed evening smoke caused violent toothache. I cured with Spi . a case of cardiac neuralgia caused by tobacco. I have frequently seen cardiac murmurs appearing in acute rheumatism disappear under Spi . In the eye, neuralgias, inflammation, amaurotic conditions, glaucoma presenting the symptoms of Spi . have been cured with it. The pains of Spi . are largely out -pressing, and proceed from within outward and below upward. A migraine comes from occiput and settles in or over left eye. In the eyes themselves there are intolerable pressive pains < on motion; but there are also stabbing pains through eye backwards into brain. The combination of heart and eye symptoms marks Spi . as the remedy in many cases of exophthalmic goître. The anthelmintic properties of Spi . must not be lost sight of by homeopaths. It has the cardiac symptoms of helminthiasis: itching of anus and nose, colic, and borborygmus. Hering gives this case: "Helminthiasis: dilated pupils; strabismus; putrid smell from mouth, itching of nose, griping pain in belly; throat inflamed, swallows often, pale redness in throat and swelling of mucous membrane; palpitation." Masses of lumbrici have been expelled and also threadworms. Fetid breath and fetid flatus are marked features of Spi . There is both constipation and diarrhœa. I have found it especially useful in heart cases where constipation has been a troublesome complication. The bodily sensitiveness of Spi . is paralleled by the mental irritability. But the most peculiar mental symptom is "fear of pointed things as pins, &c." Meninger ( A. H ., xx. 282) had a severe case of nausea of pregnancy which he cured with Spi . The only leading symptom in the case was this: She was afraid of pointed things and asked her husband to take away a fork, crochet-needle, &c. ( Sil . has a somewhat similar symptom, but the Sil . patient hunts for pins although afraid of them.) Spi . corresponds to rheumatism as well as to heart affections the consequence of rheumatism. A patient whom I successfully treated for a serious heart affection with Spi . 3 told me that under the treatment he had lost a pain in the right knee which he had had for eighteen months, and which he had not mentioned to me at first. The pain was as if dislocated; unable to rise from kneeling; cannot find an easy position, often for hours at night. Peculiar Sensations of Spi . are: As if he would fall. As if intoxicated. As if head would burst. As of a band around head. As if head tightly bound. As if electric sparks in temples. Brain as if loose. As if nerves being cut with a fine instrument in forehead and temple. As if eye would be pushed out of head. As if hairs or feathers on lashes. Upper lids as if paralysed. Eyeballs as if too large. As if sand in eyes. As if needles thrust into eyeball. As if eye would be pressed out of socket. As if eye would fly into pieces. As if eye were being pulled forward and backward. Pain in eye as if it would drive him crazy. As if ear loosely stopped or a thick mist before it. As if back of nose were lightly touched by hair, or as if a gentle wind were blowing across it. Face feels as if it had been scorched. As if all muscles of left side of face from head to neck and left axilla were pierced with red-hot needles. Teeth as if too long. As if left side of lower jaw would be torn out of its joint. Sensation resembling purring of cat. As of a worm rising in throat. As of a half fluid body ascending in throat. As of a hard lump in throat. As if abdomen would burst. As if all intestines would be constricted. Suffocating as if from a quantity of water poured into windpipe. Pulse as if a thread pulled through arteries. As if heart compressed or squeezed with a hand. As if heart being crushed. As if everything in chest were too short, loose, and wabbling about. As if something tearing in chest. In left scapula sensation as though blood dripping through a valve. Spi . is Suited to: Anæmic, debilitated subjects, of rheumatic diathesis; to scrofulous children afflicted with ascarides and lumbrici; to persons with light hair; pale, thin, bloated, weak; with wrinkled, yellow, earthy skin. Ears

Earache with an ichorous, scalding discharge; hearing very sensitive; noise in the ear as of something fluttering. ─ Pain in margin of l. concha. ─ Drawing in l. antitragus. ─ Itching in r. concha. ─ Pressive pains in r. ear. ─ Otalgia, with pressive, troublesome pain, as if there were a plug in ear. ─ Jerking tearing in ears. ─ Squeezing, itching, and burning sensation in external ear. ─ Itching in r. vesicle. ─ Stoppage of ears, with or without dysecoia. ─ Periodical deafness. ─ Sensation of distant ringing in ears, with sensation as if the ear were loosely stopped or a thick mist were in front of it. ─ Roaring, buzzing, and pulsation in ears. ─ Noise of hammering before ears.

Nose

Itching in nose, with tickling. ─ Tickling on back of nose, as if lightly touched by hairs, or as if a gentle wind were blowing across it. ─ Tingling, shooting, boring, smarting and itching in nose. ─ Herpetic eruption on nose with pain, as from excoriation. ─ Stoppage and dryness of anterior nose, with copious discharge of whitish and yellowish mucus from posterior nares. ─ Frequent sneezing; discharge of bloody mucus. ─ Mucus at one time white, at another time yellow, is discharged from nose; at same time much mucus is discharged from mouth. ─ Fluent coryza, which recurs frequently, esp. after slightest chill.

Face

Face pale and wan, with yellow circles round eyes. ─ Redness of face; perspiration on face. ─ Cheeks and lips at one time a deep red, at another time pale. ─ Burning in r. side of upper lip. ─ Bloatedness of face, esp. after sleeping. ─ Facial muscles seem distorted and swollen, morning on rising. ─ Prosopalgia (mostly l. ─ sided). ─ Jerking tearings, burning sensation, and aching in region of Zygomatic process; or violent pains, which cannot bear the slightest touch or least movement, with shining swelling of side affected. ─ Periodical neuralgia; from morning until sunset; < at noon; < from motion or noise. ─ Semilateral pains in face, with præcordial anxiety and great agitation. ─ Exostosis of the temporal part of the orbit. ─ Lips tense and burning. ─ Small blackish pimples on upper lip. ─ Pressive pain in angle of lower jaw, as if in the jaw or in the teeth, proceeding from the ear. ─ Tearing in lower jaw, radiating to ear and about it as far as nape; could not move head without pain. ─ Pain as if r. side of lower jaw would be torn out of its joint, only when chewing.

Teeth

Toothache (in evening) after customary smoke in evening. ─ Toothache > by tobacco smoke. ─ Pain, like pressing asunder, in the teeth, immediately after a meal, or at night, which does not permit continued lying down. ─ Toothache so that he was unable to sleep at night; it drove him out of bed; not during day, except just after eating, not while eating. ─ Toothache > by warmth of bed. ─ Toothache like a pressure outward; < lying on r. side. ─ Jerking toothache, or with pulsative tearings, esp. in carious teeth, < by cold water after eating or by contact with the open air; > whilst eating and when lying down. ─ Toothache with prosopalgia, paleness and bloatedness of face, yellowish circles round eyes, palpitation of heart, shivering and agitation.

Mouth

Offensive exhalation from the mouth, noticed only by others. ─ (Stinging) lancinating dryness in mouth on waking in morning. ─ Much white, frothy saliva in mouth. ─ White or yellow mucus in mouth and palate. ─ Tongue cracked. ─ Vesicles, with burning pain, on tongue and palate. ─ Took away the pain of cancer of tongue (Bayes, H. W ., xviii. 3).

Throat

Sore throat, with lancinations and swelling in palate. ─ Discharge of mucus from fauces all day, most from posterior nares. ─ Cervical glands swollen.

Appetite

Putrid, fetid taste. ─ Anorexia, with violent thirst. ─ Repugnance to tobacco-smoke and snuff. ─ Dislike to coffee. ─ Bulimy, sometimes with nausea and thirst.

Stomach

Risings after every meal. ─ Sour risings. ─ Nausea (in the morning) when fasting, with a sensation as if something were ascending from stomach into throat. ─ Accumulation of mucus in the stomach. ─ Pressure in stomach and scrobiculus as from a heavy body (as from a hard lump). ─ Lancinations in pit of stomach and diaphragm, sometimes with obstructed respiration. ─ Dull stitches, in pit of stomach, < from inspiration, with oppression of the chest. ─ Inability to bear tight clothing round scrobiculus; the least contact causes anguish, with redness and heat of face, and sensation as if something were torn away in chest.

Abdomen

Griping in abdomen, as if intestines constricted, with anxiety and difficult breathing. ─ Abdomen hard, and painfully tight. ─ Stitches in region of diaphragm, l. side, arresting breathing. ─ Pressure in umbilical region, as by a hard body. ─ Colic, with pinching pains, cuttings (from worms) in the umbilical region, with shivering, diarrhœa, and copious secretion of urine. ─ Lancinations (stitches) in the abdomen. ─ Tensive pain in the groins when touched. ─ Grumbling and borborygmi in the abdomen. ─ Painful pressure in lower abdomen, as if it would burst, esp. in evening before a soft stool; sometimes > after. ─ Expulsion of fetid flatus.

Stool and Anus

Frequent, urgent, and ineffectual want to evacuate. ─ Soft, liquid fæces. ─ White stools daily. ─ Nodular stool with violent pressure. ─ Faints during stool. ─ Hard, difficult evacuations, with much mucus. ─ Discharge (of large lumps) of mucus from anus, without evacuation. ─ Liquid diarrhœa of fæcal matter and of mucus. ─ Diarrhœa, with pinchings in abdomen and coldness in body. ─ Discharge of fæces with worms. ─ Ejection of lumbrici and ascarides from rectum. ─ Itching and sensation as if something were creeping in rectum and anus. ─ Boring stitches in perinæum. ─ (Scirrhus of sigmoid or rectum, atrocious, unbearable pains. ─ H. C. Allen).

Urinary Organs

Urine, with whitish sediment. ─ Frequent want to urinate, with profuse emission, even at night. ─ Sudden and involuntary dribbling of urine, with burning sensation in anterior part of urethra. ─ Discharge of prostatic fluid from the urethra.

Male Sexual Organs

Tingling round glans penis. ─ Semilateral swelling of glans. ─ Erections, with lascivious ideas, without voluptuous excitement. ─ (Discharge of prostatic fluid.). ─ Itching stitch in r. testicle and penis, from behind forward.

Respiratory Organs

Catarrh, with hoarseness, continual discharge of mucus from nose, dry heat without thirst, prominent eyes, distressing headache, and disposition to weep. ─ Nocturnal catarrh, with cough. ─ Cough in open air, with pain in chest as from excoriation. ─ Dry cough, violent and hollow, caused by irritation low down in trachea, with respiration obstructed, even to suffocation. ─ Short, dry cough causing soreness of chest. ─ Shortness of breath, esp. when talking, with anxiety and redness of cheeks and lips. ─ Dyspnœa when moving in bed; can only lie on r. side; or with the head very high. ─ Danger of suffocation on least movement, and esp. on raising arms.

Chest

Aching at the chest, with painful oppression. ─ Contraction of chest, with anguish and obstructed respiration. ─ Stitches in diaphragm with dyspnœa. ─ Noise in the chest like that made by a spinning-wheel, esp. in region of heart. ─ Pressure, burning or incisive sensation, pain, as from ulceration and tearing in chest, esp. on lifting arms. ─ Cutting tearing beneath l. nipple, extending to region of scapulæ and upper arm, < during inspiration and deep breathing. ─ Sensation of trembling in thorax, < by moving arms. ─ Spasmodic sensation in chest, proceeding from pit of stomach and causing choking. ─ Tensive lancinations in chest, esp. when drawing breath.

Heart

Violent palpitation of heart, perceptible to sight and hearing, often with anxious oppression of chest, < by curving chest forwards and by sitting down. ─ Noise in chest, like that made by a spinning-wheel, esp. in region of heart. ─ Sudden attack of suffocation, with palpitation of heart and anguish. ─ Heavy aching in region of apex, with feeling as if a dull-pointed knife were slowly driven through it. ─ (Organic diseases of the heart; rubbing, bellows sounds.). ─ Sensation in heart as if squeezed with hand; as if crushed. ─ Lancinations in region of heart. ─ Stitches in heart, sometimes synchronous with the pulse. ─ Sensation of trembling in heart. ─ The beatings of the heart do not correspond with those of the pulse. ─ Pulse weak, irregular, trembling. ─ Undulating movement of the heart. ─ In affections of the heart, particularly if the whole l. side is sore from the affection, and possibly the eyes also from sympathy; purring of heart as of a cat; palpitation of the heart with anguish; trembling pulsation of the heart; sympathy of the chest with heart troubles. ─ (Visible pulsation of heart. ─ Violent, oppressive action of heart extending to top of head. ─ Tumultuous action of heart in acute rheumatism and other acute disorders. ─ R. Neck and Back

Needle-like stitches in upper dorsal vertebræ; in r. scapula. ─ Sensation in l. scapula as though blood were dripping through a valve, a kind of bubbling. ─ Red pimples on neck, with pain as from excoriation when touched. ─ Hard and painful swelling of glands of the neck. ─ Pains in nape, < when still, > by motion. ─ Intermittent drawing in posterior cervical muscles and up to occiput. ─ Sticking pain in r. side of neck; on swallowing, pain in parotid gland. ─ Itching of anus and coccyx. ─ Pain in back as from a fracture, also during movement. ─ Bruised feeling in spine, even during rest. ─ Lancinations (stitches) in back, sometimes on drawing breath.

Limbs

Fatigue. ─ Drawing, tearing, twitching pains in limbs and joints. ─ The limbs are affected mostly when walking.

Upper Limbs

Heaviness and trembling of arms. ─ Easy numbing of arms and hands. ─ Jerking of muscles of arms and forearms. ─ Violent lancinations and shocks in bend of elbow and joints of hands and fingers. ─ Spasmodic drawings and tearings in bones of hands. Hard nodosities in the palms, with burning itching. ─ Hands of a pale yellow colour. ─ Contraction of fingers. ─ Purulent pimples on fingers.

Lower Limbs

Pain, as of a fracture, tension and shootings in thighs, almost exclusively, when walking, or during rapid movements. ─ Stitches in the joints of the legs and feet and in the thigh. ─ Violent lancinations in knee on bending it. ─ Painful stiffness in knee-joint. ─ Lancinating shocks in joints of feet. ─ Excrescences, like warts, on toes.

Generalities

[Very violent neuralgia, followed by an extreme soreness; boring pains; pains as if parts were pushed or pressed asunder, or as if they would burst; sensation of extension in size; feeling as of a lump in the inner parts; darting pains in inner and outer parts; darting pain from within outward; in the joints; pains of a dragging or rooting character. ─ Affections in general of r. side of face and nose; stool with maw-worms (oxyuris vermicularis), discharge of urine too copious, sensitiveness of outer parts; aversion to washing; trembling pulse that can scarcely be counted. ─ < On stooping; when blowing nose; during expiration; after rising from a seat; from touching the parts affected; when walking in open air; from having worms. ─ > While taking an inspiration. ─ H. Sleep

Strong disposition to sleep by day, and also in morning or evening; but without sleeping until long after lying down. ─ Sleep at night, unrefreshing, agitated, with uneasiness in limbs. ─ Heavy, stupefying sleep. ─ Confused dreams, which cause him to awake wearied, and which he cannot remember.

Fever

Pulse irregular, generally strong, but slow. ─ Trembling pulse. ─ Frequent shiverings, esp. in morning or during slight exercise. ─ Chill, frequently returning at the same hour in the morning. ─ Chill, alternating with heat or perspiration. ─ Chilliness on some part of the body, on others heat. ─ The chill extends from the chest. ─ Frequent heat, sometimes transient. ─ Heat, esp. in back. ─ Heat in face and on hands, with chill in back. ─ Thirst for beer during the heat (with flushes of heat at night). ─ At night putrid perspiration with heat at same time. ─ Clammy perspiration. ─ Cold perspiration.

Migraine, affecting either supraorbital region during cold rainy weather ; severe throbbing or tearing stitching pains, with redness and lachrymation of eye of affected side ; attacks last twenty-four hours.
Severe uninterrupted twitching, tearing, at times sawing pains, as if nerves were being torn out by a fine instrument, in right side of forehead and temple, extending over eye and into malar bone ; right eye inflamed, profuse lachrymation, sensation as if eye would be pushed
out of head, photophobia ; burning heat in affected parts of face ; distension and violent pulsation of temporal arteries ; coryza ; disturbed sleep.
Frequent headaches, sometimes on right, sometimes on left side, then in forehead, vertex or occiput, often spreading to face and shoulder ; throbbing, shooting, drawing, pressing ; weak digestion and catarrh of stomach after eating fat food ; after catamenial period,
attacks of pain in upper and lower jaw, tearing lightning-like twitches, with palpitation and fluttering of heart ; < from cold water, cold air, and chewing.
Any quick movement converts the dull aching pains into acute stabbing.
Headache < : from thinking ; by a bright light ; by noise ; by sneezing ; by motion of eyes or facial muscles ; by opening mouth ; by speaking aloud ; by cough ; from stooping ; shaking or jarring head ; making a misstep ; from
least motion ; by touch ; by warmth.
Headache > : when lying with head high ; from pressure, and laying hand on it ; from washing head with cold water ; while at rest.

Outer head

Shaking in brain, < when moving head or stepping hard.
Tension of scalp ; feels sore externally and is sore to touch.
Head feels as if too large.

Sight and eyes

Illusion as if hairs or feathers were on lashes ; < on wiping them.
Weakness and dimness of vision ; sparks before eyes.
Farsighted.
Photophobia : oversensitive retina.
Accommodative asthenopia with slight retinitis, neuralgia, anemia of optic nerve from excessive teadrinking.
Sparks before eyes.
On shutting eyes a sea of fire appears.
Vanishing of sight ; all things appear as if through a mist ; dimness of lens.
Rheumatic cataract of left eye.

Pterygium, from inner canthus of right eye some distance over cornea, beginning after a severe pain two years ago ; pain in left eye as if it would fly into pieces, < on stooping and in morning, continuing till noon, then suddenly disappearing.
Pains of glaucoma and sclero-choroiditis.
Rheumatic iritis in left eye with excessive ciliary neuralgia, for three weeks ; much redness, deep ciliary injection and posterior synechiæ, with violent pain from 3 A. M., for two or three hours, continuing more or less until 3 P. M. (Atropine was used externally and
Sulphur internally), the adhesions were torn and pain relieved the first night ; on second night, although pupil was widely dilated, pain returned more severely than ever ; pain as if eye were being pulled forward and backward, with numb pain through head, which woke him at 2 A.
M., and continued the remainder of the night and all the forenoon ; it seemed as if it would drive him crazy ; each attack of pain was accompanied by a chill.
Redness of conjunctiva ; vessels strongly injected.
Inflammation of cornea.

Ten years ago was struck over left eye with a brick, leaving a large scar and considerable depression over supraorbital nerve ; at irregular intervals extreme pain over site of wound, at times so severe that he feared he would lose his mind ; pain came
about 10 A. M. and reached its height about 3 P. M., sharp and cutting, extending over temple and forehead, with profuse flow of water from eyes ; > in a dark room, when quiet, and almost entirely relieved at night.
Upper lids feel hard and immovable.
Lids inflamed and ulcerated.
Great inclination to wink.
Lids lax and paralyzed, they hang low down and must be raised.

Hearing and ears

Oversensitive hearing, in neuralgia and headache.
Sensation of distant ringing in both ears, with a sensation as if ear were loosely stopped or a thick mist were in front of it.
Periodical deafness ; ears feel as if stuffed.
Otalgia, pressing pain as from a plug.
Neuralgia of ear, sudden stitch extending to eye, zygoma, jaw, teeth, throat.
Pinching, drawing, itching pain in external ear ; loud noises painful, when speaking the sound of one's voice resounds like a bell through brain.
Itching in right concha.

Smell and nose

Tickling and itching in nose.
Tickling on back of nose, as if lightly touched by hairs, or as if a gentle wind were blowing across it, lasting a long time.
Smarting in nose. θ Helminthiasis.
Violent nosebleed. θ Endocarditis.
Coryza : fluent or dry ; with dry heat, no thirst ; eyes water ; headache, with hoarseness ; anxiety about heart ; discharge so profuse that it causes coughing and suffocating fits as soon as patient lies down.
Stoppage of anterior part of nose, with profuse discharge of mucus through posterior nares.
Flow of water from nose. θ Prosopalgia.
Discharge of large quantities of mucus through choanæ, nose being dry. θ Nasal catarrh.
Mucus from choanæ tastes and smells badly. θ Nasal catarrh.
Copious offensive mucus flows through posterior nares, causing choking at night.
Chronic nasal catarrh.
Herpetic eruption on nose.

Upper face

Face : bloated, distorted, < morning on awaking ; pale, sickly ; yellow around eyes ; red ; sweaty ; anxious, in rheumatism.
Prosopalgia : mostly left sided, with tearing, shooting, burning into eye, malar bone and teeth ; periodical ; from morning till sunset, < at noon ; < from motion or noise ; with lachrymation, ciliary neuralgia,
palpitation ; cheek dark red.
Neuralgia affecting infraorbital and maxillary branches of fifth pair of nerves.
Periodical faceache ; pains burning and tensive, especially in cheek bones, above eyebrows, in left side, spreads out over face ; frequent nosebleed ; red face.
For fourteen days neuralgia, comes on between 11.15 and 11.30 P. M., about fifteen or twenty minutes after lying down in bed ; beginning in left malar bone, extending down face sometimes to neck and only on left side ; pain shooting downward,
with burning and throbbing, parts feel swollen ; continues till about 3.15 or 3.30 A. M., when she gets to sleep ; < lying, > directly she stands up ; > by hard pressure, and either cold or warm applications ; during day left side of face feels as if it had been
scorched, no actual pain, only a throbbing ; pain > after eating.
A heavy cold in head developed into severe neuralgia of left side of head and face, involving eye ; pains seemed to start from left occipital region and extend forward, sharp and tearing, especially in and around eye ; much lachrymation, constant nausea and occasional vomiting
of bile ; least noise, even talking, < pain ; light is intolerable.
Feeling as if all muscles of left side of face from forehead to neck and left axilla were pierced with red-hot needles ; muscles of cheek and around eye spasmodically affected, muscles of eye contracted, making eye look smaller ; dreadful banging, throbbing, burning, tearing
pains ; > when lying quietly on her face ; < from coffee ; after the pains affected side of face almost paralyzed ; very weak, inclined to weeping ; pain preceded by violent beating of heart ; attacks renewed by eating.
Stinging, darting pains on left half of face, commencing under left eye, going downward to cheek bone, where they were severest, and toward left side of nose and farther, radiating not so painful down to teeth of upper jaw ; > from heat.
Facial neuralgia, left side ; zygomatic region and eyelids slightly reddened and swollen ; conjunctiva injected, slight dacryorrhoea ; pain commences near infraorbital foramen and extends into eye, temple, ear, nose and teeth, jerking and tearing ; increased flow of
saliva and increased temperature of parts, which are very sensitive to touch ; usually commences in afternoon, rages until midnight, drives out of bed, and remits toward morning, when patient falls asleep from sheer exhaustion ; during spell acceleration of pulse ; precordial
anxiety ; palpitation and great nervous agitation, with trembling of limbs ; at first pain > by application of water, later this could not be borne ; < in open, damp cold air ; from lying upon affected side, and chewing ; > from rest and wrapping up head.
Facial neuralgia of right side ; pain distributed about and within right orbit, darted through from frontal to occipital region (> by Cimicif., cured by Spigel.).
Facial neuralgia, left side, suddenly coming and suddenly going, with palpitation of heart and sleeplessness.
Facial neuralgia, right side ; pain began in lower jaw, extending upward to ear and temple ; hot feeling around eye ; teeth feel too long ; pain occurs whenever she lies down. θ Prosopalgia.
Severe tearing, burning pain shooting from left side of forehead to temple, especially in left supraorbital ridge with ptosis of left upper lid.
Prosopalgia from drinking tea.
When moving muscles of face sensation as if skull would burst.
Stitches from upper maxilla to vertex.
Burning or tearing pressive pains in left zygomatic region, leaving a dull sensation of swelling.
Facial pains : < from stooping, slightest motion, concussion, noise and during stool.
Sweat on face.

Lower face

Lips dry, pale, cracked.
Burning tension in upper lip during rest.
Burning in right side of upper lip even on touch.
Tearing in lower jaw extending to ear and about it, as far as into nape of neck, so that he could not move head without pain.
Pain as if right side of lower jaw would be torn out of its joint.
Neuralgia radiating to nose, face, temples and neck.

Teeth and gums

Painful jerks in nerve of a hollow tooth ; tobacco smoke seemed to relieve.
Toothache : throbbing, tearing in decayed teeth ; pressing outward, teeth feel cold ; > while eating and lying down ; < after eating, from cold air and water, from stooping, at night, driving out of bed ; from tobacco smoking.
Burning, twitching pains in carious teeth ; they feel loose and too long ; cold sensation when touched ; pain < from pressure and stooping, extending into neck and toward right ear and temple, so that she could not locate the
pain ; had hot, pale face, feet cold.
Sudden twitching pain in several teeth, right side, > from warmth of bed, < from slightest draft of air ; > sitting quiet with eyes closed.
Toothache, right side ; free from pain all day, but when laying head upon pillow at night pain comes on, must sit up or walk about, pain then leaves but returns when she places head upon pillow.
Throbbing toothache attended by a rending, burning pain in malar bone, paleness and swelling of face, with yellow rings under eyes ; pain in eyes, frequent urging to urinate, with copious discharges, palpitation of heart, a sensation in chest resembling purring of a cat,
chilliness and great uneasiness.
Digging pain in carious teeth.
Toothache returns when thinking about it.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste foul like putrid water.
Stammering, with abdominal ailments.
Repeats first syllable of a word three or four times. θ Helminthiasis.
Tongue : coated yellow or white ; burning, with blisters ; cracked.
Fine stitches in right side of tongue.
Stitches in right side of tongue, < from least motion of tongue ; formication in tongue extending into head ; pain prevents her turning head to right side ; swelling below chin as large as a hazelnut, < mornings. θ Neuralgia
of tongue.

Inner mouth

Breath fetid, putrid.
Mouth dry on awaking mornings, with stinging.
Mouth feels dry and pricks as from pins, yet filled with tenacious and nauseous saliva.
White or yellow mucus in mouth and throat.
Much spitting of frothy saliva, or slimy mucus. θ Rheumatic dyspepsia.

Palate and throat

Sensation as of a worm rising in throat, > after eating. θ Helminthiasis.
Tingling in œsophagus.
Sensation as if a half-fluid body were ascending in throat.
Neuralgic affection of pharynx. θ Sclerotitis.
Phlegm from choanæ drops down into throat.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Ravenous hunger, with nausea and thirst.
Loss of appetite, with violent thirst.
Desire for alcoholic drinks.

Eating and drinking

Better during, and generally after eating, excepting toothache.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Nausea : before breakfast, with sensation of a worm rising in throat ; > after eating ; sickly, pale face.
Vomits food, with sour rising like vinegar.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Pit of stomach sensitive to touch.
Dull stitches in pit of stomach and oppression of chest < on inspiration.
Pressure on stomach as from a hard lump.
Neuralgic pains in stomach.
Acrid, sour regurgitation after eating, followed by vomiting of food taken ; constant severe pressing, corrosive pain in stomach ; pressure in head and vertigo ; stomach not sensitive to pressure ; four years ago discharged a
segment of tapeworm.

Hypochondria

Stitches in region of diaphragm, left side, arresting breathing.
Heavy pressure in precordial region, causing constriction and anxiety ; with cutting and griping in bowels as from wind.

Abdomen and loins

Cutting colic at navel.
Pressure in umbilical region, as from a hard lump.
Stitches in abdomen.
Painful pressure in lower abdomen, as if it would burst, especially in evening before a soft stool, after which it was somewhat relieved.
Griping in abdomen as if all the intestines would be constricted, caused great anxiety and made respiration difficult.
Sharp stitches, like spleen stitches, in abdomen in region of os innominatum, only when walking, and disappearing after thirty or forty steps.
Lancinating pain in abdomen, with falling back of head and loss of senses.
Pinching and cutting pain in abdomen.
Intestinal irritation. θ Strabismus. θ Helminthiasis.
Noisy, sometimes painful borborygmus.
Swelling of abdomen.
Tension in groin.

Stools and rectum

Emission of fetid flatus.
Stools : of mucus, with tenesmus ; large lumps of mucus, without feces ; of feces, with masses of worms ; hard, like sheep's dung, and enveloped in mucus ; thin, mushy.
Frequent inefficient urging to stool.
Itching and tickling in anus and rectum ; ascarides and lumbricoides.
Itching in anus and on coccyx.
Helminthiasis : dilated pupils ; strabismus ; putrid smell from mouth, itching of nose, griping pain in belly ; throat inflamed, swallows often, pale redness in throat and swelling of mucous membrane ; palpitation.
Boring stitch in perineum.

Urinary organs

Diabetes insipidus.
Urine : copious ; with frequent urging, mostly at night ; drips involuntarily, with burning in orifice of urethra ; whitish sediment ; watery, frequent, nervous.

Male sexual organs

Erections with voluptuous fancies, but without sexual desire.
Itching stitch in right testicle and penis, from behind forward.
Prostatic fluid presses out of urethra.
Swelling of one-half of corona glandis.
Tingling around corona glandis.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

Stitches under either nipple.
Puerperal peritonitis.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Chronic hoarseness.
Catarrh with hoarseness ; continuous coryza ; dry heat without thirst ; protruded eyes ; violent headache ; lachrymation.
Tickling in windpipe.
Influenza accompanied by facial neuralgia.

Respiration

Short breath, < when talking, with red cheeks and lips.
Dyspnœa and suffocating attacks when moving in bed or raising arms ; must lie on right side or with head high. θ Heart disease. θ Hydrothorax.
Hardly speaks or takes a deep breath for fear of aggravating the pain. θ Cardiac rheumatism or neuralgia.
Oppression of chest with palpitation when walking fast or from other bodily exertion. θ Insufficiency of valves.
Suffocating spell from least motion. θ Carditis.

Cough

Cough : at night, with catarrh ; dry, hard ; with worm affections ; with dyspnœa, < when bending forward ; suffocating, as if from a quantity of water flowing into windpipe ; dry, violent, hollow, from an irritation in
trachea.
Catarrh of air passages with fever, hot skin, but no thirst or sweat.

Inner chest and lungs

Constriction in chest, with anxiety and difficult breathing.
Violent pressure upon chest beneath left clavicle, and on middle of chest.
Cutting constriction in chest, with anxiety.
Dull stitches in right side of chest, only during inspiration.
Stitches in chest, < from least movement or when breathing.
Violent stitch in left side, just beneath heart.
Dull sticking at point where beat of heart is felt.
Recurrent dull stitches, rhythmical with pulse, at point where impulse of heart is felt or rather more externally.
Sensation of tearing in chest.
Tearing boring pain, extending from within outward, beneath right nipple, pain always extends to sternum and becomes a sharp pressive tearing pain.
Dull sticking pinching pain beneath right nipple, in thorax, from within outward, violent only on inspiration.
Stitching needlelike pains in chest.
Cutting piercing pain through left chest, near sternum to back ; heart not beating, but an uninterrupted rush of blood through it ; pulse not beating, but appeared to finger like a thread quickly pulled through artery ; hands icy cold with cold sweat ; great anguish

Stitches about heart ; synchronous with pulse ; with anxiety and oppression ; with commencing valvular disease, endocarditis, etc. ; can only lie on right side, or with head very high, least motion aggravates.
Stitches in heart, and violent throbbing motion of heart may be seen through clothing.
Drawing sensation in region of heart. θ Aneurism.
Violent stitch in left side, just under heart, returns periodically.
Stitches between heart and epigastrium.
Feeling as if heart were compressed or squeezed with a hand.
Purring feeling over heart ; wavelike motion, not synchronous with pulse.
Palpitation : violent, < bending forward ; high fever ; when he sits down, after rising in morning ; from deep inspiration or holding breath ; from worms ; from least motion ; with anxious oppression of chest.
Violent palpitation of heart and frequent attacks of fainting ; blowing murmur with first sound of heart. θ Chlorosis.
Waving palpitation, not synchronous with pulse ; purring feeling over heart ; trembling of carotids.

Severe pains in all the limbs ; hands stiff, cannot move them, particularly fingers ; pressing cutting pain in abdomen, beneath floating ribs ; terrible palpitation ; audible beating of heart, causing pains in back ; periodical cutting pains extending to
shoulders, head and arms ; constriction of chest ; great dyspnœa, cannot get enough air, with great oppression of chest and anxious face ; extreme emaciation ; must be careful while eating lest pain be < to an intolerable degree. θ Arthritic
rheumatism.
Attacks of cramplike, grinding pain across chest ; body convulsed ; face pale ; dyspnœa, nausea, anxiety and faintness accompanied attack, which lasted uninterruptedly for half an hour ; rapid and strong beating of heart ; bellows' sound during diastole, and
friction sound during systole ; < by slightest motion ; pulse very feeble ; extremely sensitive to cold. θ Rheumatic carditis.
Severe stitching pains in cardiac region ; violent palpitation, perceptible to eye ; dyspnœa on moving in bed ; oppression of chest ; anxiety ; slight cyanosis of upper lip ; heartbeat weak ; increased area of dulness on percussion ; friction

Constant pressing, burning and ulcerative pain in thorax ; dyspnœa, with fear of suffocation on motion, so that she is afraid to get out of bed ; tremulous sensation in chest and in temples, < from least motion of arms, particularly when raising them toward head, when there
is a sensation as of something tearing in chest, with great dyspnœa and anxiety ; flushing with sweat on face on touching epigastrium, she cannot bear pressure of clothing ; at times cramping sensation, beginning in abdomen and extending into chest, causing dyspnœa ; at
times violent palpitation with sensation as if heart were being crushed, or with stitches and trembling sensation ; at other times as if everything in chest were too short, loose and wabbling about ; is very careful when moving and is filled with anxiety on seeing any one move
quickly ; frequent wabbling sensation in abdomen ; head rests upon chest when lying and sitting, if she raises it she becomes anxious, feels as if something were tearing in chest and is seized with nervous spasmodic respiration, with violent and convulsive efforts at distension of
chest, face becomes bluish-red and heart beats tumultuously, also violent pulsation in all the arteries ; pulse 80 when lying, 93 sitting, and not synchronous with beat of heart ; heartbeat weak, indistinct, one running into the other ; change from systole to diastole
indicated rather by a wavelike motion than by any distinct sound or impulse.
Systolic blowing at apex.
Rheumatic affections of heart.
Pulse : irregular ; strong, but slow ; trembling ; weak and irregular, at one time rapid, at another slow ; quicker than beating of heart ; like a thread quickly pulled through artery ; intermitting, every other beat drops
out.
Aneurism ; a girl æt. 15, light complexion ; a few itching pustules on forehead and chin ; for two years, visible and felt by hand, a throbbing lump in second intercostal space ; feels lump when stretching either arm
backward ; from stooping or lifting throbbing in chest, with vertigo ; drawing in region of heart ; stethescope over tumor reveals continuous rushing sound, more marked during heart's systole ; first sound somewhat confused ; second sound usually prolonged, and of
increased intensity ; a murmur upward from each side of sternum ; frightened when examined ; headache like band around head when stooping ; nausea (Spigel. cured, assisted by Carb. veg. and later Bryon.).

Outer chest

Violent shootings in walls of chest, mostly on left, under clavicle or on a line with heart.
Painful contraction of muscles of chest.

Neck and back

Rheumatism of nape of neck with painful numbness ; < lying on back.
Stitches in back ; also when breathing.
Bruised feeling in spine, even during rest.
Throbbing of carotids and subclavian. θ Endocarditis.

Upper limbs

Trembling of arms.
Stitches in bends of elbows and joints of hands and fingers.
Twitching in muscles of left forearm just above wrist, only during rest.
Pressive pain above right wrist, during rest.
Painful drawing on first joint of thumb where it unites with the metacarpal bone.
Tearing pain in phalanges of right thumb.
Burning itching in palms.
Hands icy cold with cold sweat. θ Rheumatism.
Cold viscous sweat in hands.
Subcutaneous tubercles in palms of hands.
Hard, burning itching nodosities in hands.
Contraction of flexor of fingers.

Lower limbs

Drawing tearing in right thigh, while sitting.
Persistent tensive stitch in left thigh, while walking, ceases on standing, returns on sitting.
Persistent itching stitch in left thigh.
Tearing pain, like a sprain, in left knee, only when walking, at times he limped because he could not bend knee as usual.
Stitching in calves, with jerking and pulsating, in both patellæ, if knees are held stiffly stretched out.
Stitches in joints of legs and feet, and in thigh.

Characteristic

Adapted to anæmic, debilitated subjects, of rheumatic diathesis; to scrofulous children afflicted with ascarides and lumbrici (Cina, Stan.).

Persons with light hair; pale, thin, bloated, weak; wrinkled, yellow, earthy skin.

Body painfully sensitive to touch; part touched feels chilly; touch sends shudder through the whole frame (Kali c.).

Afraid of sharp, pointed things, pins, needles, etc.

Rheumatic affections of heart (Kal., Led., Naja); systolic blowing at apex. Aneurism.

Nervous headache; periodical, beginning in morning at base of brain, spreading over the head and locating in eye, orbit and temple of left side (right side, Sang., Sil.); pain, pulsating, violent, throbbing.

Headache; at sunrise, at its height at noon, declines till sunset (Nat., Tab.).

Intolerable, pressive pain in eyeballs; could not turn the eyes without turning the whole body; worse, especially on making a false step.

Type

Quotidian; periodicity marked.

Time

Morning; at same hour. Evening paroxysm is rare.

Cause

Rheumatic exposure; or occurring in connection with periodic neuralgia of head, face or chest.

Chill

Every morning, at same hour; alternates with heat or perspiration, especially on the back.

Sudden creeping chills, at one time only in the feet, at another only in the head and hands, at another on the back of chest and abdomen, at another over whole body, without thirst. Chill spreads from the chest (Apis, Carbo a., Sep.); least movement of the body causes chilliness.

Heat

Especially in the back; in flushes at night; on the face and hands with chill in the back. Heat in back, hands, abdomen, gradually increasing until he becomes hot all over. Thirst for beer, not water (Nux).

Sweat

Putrid smelling night-sweat. Sweat of hands clammy; cold all over body; on slightest covering (Cinch.).

Pulse

Irregular, generally strong but slow; trembling.

Tongue

Coated yellow or white; cracked. Taste like putrid water. Ravenous hunger with nausea and thirst. Desire for alcoholic drinks.
