Head

Crusta lactea, moist, fearful itching, with little raw tubercles on scalp, face, and arms. Headache with nausea; right side; in forehead; running backward. Tongue blistered, red tip, great pain at root of.

Stool

Constipation habitual; patient says the bowels will not move without aid of purgatives; feeling of fulness in the abdomen before stool, which remains after stool, as if all had not passed; constipation from torpor of the rectum.

Sexual

Female: Mastitis, where the hardness is very apparent from the first, with great burning; very sensitive nipples or breasts, which are more or less painful; even after suppuration these characteristics continue. Menses: amenorrhœa complicated with ovarian irritation or disease. Very painful menstruation in apparently barren women when occurring in connection with rheumatism; shreds of membrane are passed with the menstrual flow; dysmenorrhœa accompanying erosion or ulceration of the cervix. Menses too often; too profuse, with corresponding increase of the tears, saliva, bile and urine.

Generalities

Tetanus and opisthotonos. Decrease of weight. Retarded dentition.

Head

Phytolacca decandra is one of our most valuable remedies for sore throat, and the indications are plain. The throat becomes generally inflamed; the tonsils swell and become very red at the first, and then white spots appear which (unless checked) soon spread and coalesce and form patches of a diphtheritic appearance. There are sharks pains often running up into one or both ears. These are the local throat symptoms, and the constitutional symptoms are:

Intense head and backache, and a sore, aching, bruised feeling all over the body, causing the patient to groan, and while, like Rhus toxicodendron, he feels as if he must move, the act of moving greatly aggravates all his pains and soreness. The patient is also greatly prostrated, and sitting upright makes him faint and dizzy like Bryonia. There is high fever, for the pulse is very quick; but the heat, like that of Arnica, is mostly in the head and face while the body and limbs are cool.

Now these symptoms present, it makes no difference whether the case is called tonsilitis, diphtheria or scarlatina. Abundant experience in my own person and observation with my patients has proven Phytolacca to be a remedy of inestimable value. Nor is it necessary to give it in twenty drop doses of the mother tincture, and gargle in addition, as some advise, but it will in the potentized dose do much better, the same as other homœopathic remedies. I have done some good work with this remedy in follicular pharyngitis, especially when in public speakers the voice gave out from over-work and there was much burning in the throat, as of a hot substance there. In this kind of sore throat I have the best success with the remedy very high.

Now let me call attention to a symptom of this remedy that has been of great value to me: "Irresistible inclination to bite the teeth or gums together." On this indication I have often relieved the complaints of various kinds incident to the period of dentition. I once had a case that was sent up to the country from New York City. The child had been sick a long time, with cholera infantum (entero-colitis), and its physicians said it must leave the city or die. But country air and change of diet brought no relief. The little fellow was greatly emaciated, having frequent loose stools of dark brown color, mixed with slime or mucus of the same color. After trying various remedies I discovered that the child wanted to bite its gums together, or to bite on everything that it could get into its mouth, and the mother then told me that this had been the case all through its sickness. Phytolacca produced immediate relief of the symptoms and rapid recovery followed.

I have since verified this symptom several times. Phytolacca is also one of our best remedies for mastitis. The breasts are very hard, greatly swollen, hot and painful. When the child nurses the pain radiates all over the body. There is fever, great pain in the head and back, and if it is a bad case, unless checked, is very liable to go on to suppuration. Every time the child nurses the pains spread all over the body.

The choice often lies between this remedy and Bryonia, and they complement each other. Almost every case of swollen breasts with the milk fever, when the breasts fill for the first time after confinement, may be speedily relieved with one or the other of these two remedies. If the case should have gone on to suppuration, with large fistulous, gaping and angry ulcers discharging a watery or fœtid pus, Phytolacca is still the remedy; and will often do more good than Hepar sulphur. and Silicea. But the choice sometimes has to be made between other remedies such as:

Croton tiglium. The pain runs through to the back when child nurses. (Silicea, Pulsatilla).

Phellandrium. Pain runs along the milk ducts between the acts of nursing.

Lac caninum. The breasts are greatly filled and so sore that their own weight hurts the patient, who wants to hold them up and shrinks from the least jar. Of course Aconite, Apis and Belladonna must not be forgotten, and have as positive indications for their use as any of the above remedies. (See also Castor equorum.)

I have removed a great many suspicious lumps or tumors in the breasts, some of them of years' standing, by giving a dose of Phytolacca c. m., once a month, during the wane of the moon. What has the moon to do with it? I do not know. I cure goître the same way (but not with Phytolacca), and was led to that way of administration by a suggestion of Jahr. That some diseases have their aggravations in certain times of the moon I know, and that certain remedies act better then, I know just as well. Do not forget that the bruised, sore feeling of Phytolacca that we noticed at length when writing of Arnica is sometimes markedly present in sciatica, for which it is one of our successful remedies. The characteristic symptom for Phytolacca in this painful affection is, that the pain runs down the outer side of the limb. Sciatica is one of the complaints in which Homœopathy has scored some of its most brilliant victories over the anodyne treatment of the old school. Periosteal rheumatism, where the pains are especially worse in wet weather, sometimes finds a remedy in Phytolacca. This drug seems to resemble in its action on the periosteum, glands, bones and skin Kali hydroiodicum, and the two remedies complement each other, of course, with indications, or the choice may sometimes lie between them. H. C. Allen says: Phytolacca occupies a place midway between Bryonia and Rhus tox., and will often help when these seem indicated but fail. It is curious to note that almost every chemical remedy has a closely resembling relative from the vegetable kingdom. Kali hydroiodicum and Phytolacca, Aloes and Sulphur, Cepa and Phosphorus, Chamomilla and Magnesia carb., China and Ferrum, Belladonna and Calcarea ost., Ipecac and Cuprum, Bryonia and Alumina, Mezereum and Mercury, Pulsatilla and Kali sulphuricum. This has been before mentioned by Hering.

Head

Eyes

Burning and smarting sensation in the eyes and lids, with profuse lachrymation, which is relieved in the open air. Purple-colored swelling of the eyelids (left eye in the morning).

Ears

Shooting pains in the (right) ear.

Face

Pale face. Heat in the face (left side) after dinner ; with redness of the face, coldness of the feet, eruption in the upper lip (left side).

Mouth and Throat

The mouth fills with water, the saliva is yellowish and has a metallic taste. The tongue feels rough, with blisters on both sides, with a very red tip ; great pain at the root of the tongue on swallowing. The teeth feel elongated and are very sore. Sensation of dryness in the throat and the posterior fauces. Sensation of a lump in the throat, causing a continuous desire to swallow. Roughness and rawness in the throat.

Stomach and Abdomen

Nausea followed by violent vomiting of mucus, bile, of the ingesta, worms, blood. Soreness and pain in the right hypochondrium (during pregnancy).

Stool and Anus

Constipation, hard stools. Stool with mucus and straining.

Urinary Organs

Violent urging to pass urine. Copious nocturnal urination. Sediment like chalk ; the dark-red urine leaves a stain in the chamber of a mahogany color. Albuminous urine.

Characteristics

Phyt. dec . is a branching herbaceous plant, with a thick perennial root, sometimes larger than a man's leg in diameter. The young shoots, though extremely acrid, are rendered harmless by boiling, and are eaten like asparagus in the United States. The berries have a popular repute as a remedy for cancer and rheumatism. The berries of P. octandra are used in Mexico and the West Indies as a soap. According to Raffinesque, quoted by Hale (who introduced the remedy into homœopathy), the ash of the plant (which has been used as an escharotic in cancers, ulcers, &c.) contains 45 per cent. of caustic potash; and the plant contains besides an acid, Phytolaccic acid , which is closely allied to Malic acid . The plant is common throughout North America, the Azores, North Africa, and China. It grows in damp places. Some rather severe cases of poisoning have been reported. Vomiting, diarrhœa, frontal headache, sore throat, are the most common symptoms observed. One boy who drank two or three drachms of a tincture of the root had none of these symptoms, but developed complete tetanus: Extremities stiff; hands firmly shut; feet extended; toes flexed; lower lids drawn down; teeth clenched; lips everted and firm, general opisthotonos. Respiration difficult, râles heard all over the room. For an hour muscular rigidity increased generally, with convulsive action of muscles of face and neck; chin drawn close on sternum. This condition would last five or ten minutes, to be succeeded by perfect relaxation, and return in twenty minutes more with the same violence. After cold-water affusion, cupping, and sinapisms, the boy slept about twenty-five minutes. On awaking some twitchings, especially of lower limbs; pain in back of head and stomach. Next day he was quite recovered. A boy, 8, who ate a quantity of berries, was found in great agony, complaining that his stomach was "pinched together." He had nausea, violent vomiting; throat sore and dry; fauces dark red, tonsils swollen. After vomiting ceased, purging set in; stools dark brown and thin; severe pain in stomach on pressure, extorting cries. Later he had burning griping in umbilical region; dim vision; tongue coated white; spasmodic jerkings in arms and legs. In a woman, 45, who took Phyt . as a "blood purifier," a general rash, in appearance not unlike the rash of secondary syphilis, was set up. In a family of four poisoned by eating the root in mistake with their food, these symptoms were observed: Dread of movement; seems stupid; falls asleep after a paroxysm of cramping pain has ceased; pain in forehead < after eating; vomiting of clotted blood and slime; copious discharge of blood and mucus which looked like scrapings of intestines; involuntary stools from straining, which occurred even in sleep. In the mother of the family, seven months pregnant, it very nearly produced miscarriage; the uterus could be felt contracting under the hand; involuntary straining and hæmorrhage from the vagina; intense griping pain in small of back and cramps in legs coming and going suddenly, coldness and withered appearance of extremities, whole body cold. In all the above cases the spasmodic action of the drug is evident in some form. From inhaling the dust of the powdered dried root, or the odour given off on slicing the fresh root, intense irritation of eyes, nose, and throat, and severe headache and diarrhœa have occurred. Given to animals, Phyt . has caused convulsive symptoms, vomiting, and vomiting of worms. Wild pigeons and other birds which eat the berries acquire a highly red colour and lose their fat. This last observation has led to the use of a tincture of Phyt . berries as an anti-fat, and many successful results have been reported. This observation may be taken as the key to one of the great spheres of the action of this remedy ─ the absorption of tissues, especially new growths. There are few remedies which have a wider range in the cure of tumours and indurations, particularly of the female breast. Hale tells us that among dairymen in America the root is used to regulate any abnormality in the milk of cows ─ scanty; thick; watery; curdy; containing blood or pus. But its chief repute is in caked udders. In breast induration and abscesses of nursing women, and even in cancers (internally and sometimes externally as well), its action has been well confirmed. But it must not be supposed that this action is purely physiological, as is the absorption of fat in birds. A patient of mine, about forty-five, took Phyt . 30 for sore throat. After a few-doses she was compelled to desist because of its effects on her breasts; both became full and uncomfortable, and in the left one appeared a large lump in its upper segment, which lasted five days, and was only got rid of by dint of vigorous rubbing with camphorated oil. A case of cancer of the rectum has been cured with Phytolaccin 3x. In the uterus and the prostate gland (the male uterus) specific symptoms were evoked in the poisonings and provings. Muscles, joints, bones, brain, and spinal cord, as well as the special senses, were all more or less disordered. The intense action of the drug on the throat has led to its being used as a routine remedy in diphtheria. It is not a specific; but it has some very characteristic symptoms which will indicate it when present. Among these are: Great pain at root of tongue when swallowing; pains shooting from throat into ears on swallowing; hot feeling as if a red-hot ball in throat; burning < by hot drinks; dark redness of fauces. Eclectics ( H. R ., xi. 429) give the expressed juice of the berries in "spasmodic or membranous croup, or diphtheria." There is one form of sore throat in which I have found it of the greatest service-the so-called "diphtheritic sore throat." Dark red, swollen mucous membrane and tonsils, pain on swallowing, eruption of herpetic, whitish, or grey spots on fauces, swelling and tenderness of the glands externally at the angle of the jaw. With these symptoms there are generally headache, backache, wandering rheumatic pains and fever. I have cleared up numberless cases of this kind with Phyt . 30. Not infrequently epidemic influenza has taken this form, and then Phyt . has been my most successful remedy. (Nash has relieved chronic follicular pharyngitis in public speakers when there has been much burning , as if a hot substance in throat.) One of the provers had "swollen and tender gland right side of neck"; and swollen and tender glands in many other localities have been remedied with Phyt . The headaches of Phyt . are chiefly frontal, pressive, involving eyes, < right side. One headache is peculiar, being associated with increased sense of hearing . The irritation of the mucous membrane of the throat extends to nose, ears, and eyes, producing characteristic symptoms in each. The discharges are tough, stringy, difficult to detach, and may take the form of clinkers. Offensiveness and acridity are also common features. The nervous irritability of Phyt . has led to its successful use in disorders of dentition, a keynote symptom being: Irresistible inclination to bite the teeth or gums together. The pains of Phyt . come and go suddenly; move about, radiate from a centre, or change place. Pain in sore nipples of nursing women radiate all over the body when the child is put to the breast. When pain in intestines disappears pain in extremities comes on. Pain leaves heart and appears in right arm (this association is unusual, and therefore important). Pains in head and chest go from before backward. Pains run down spine from nape; from sacrum down outer aspect of thighs to toes. The outer aspects of the limbs are chiefly affected. The shreddy discharge of Phyt . mark it as a remedy in certain forms of intestinal catarrh and dysmenorrhœa. It is hæmorrhagic and hæmorrhoidal, acting strongly on rectum and anus, curing tenesmus, bloody discharges and heat. One characteristic pain (noted in a case of constipation) is: Shooting pain from anus to lower part of rectum, along perinæum to middle of penis. "Gurgling in the prostate gland, repeatedly in the afternoon," was noted by one prover, and pains in spermatic cords. Entire suspension of sexual appetite with relaxation of the genitals was caused. Stiffness is a characteristic effect of Phyt ., noted in the tetanus case, and in others in less degree. Stiff neck, especially right side. The prostration is so rapid and profound that it has led to the successful use of Phyt . in diphtheritic paralysis. Faint and dizzy when standing. Soreness of all the muscles. Restlessness, but he fears to move because motion < the pains. The rheumatic swellings are hard, tender, and intensely hot. Phyt . is suited to rheumatic or syphilitic subjects who are sensitive to damp weather. Peculiar sensations are: Brain as if bruised. Right side of head as if pressed firmly. As if sand in eyes. As if eyes too large. As if lids granulated. As if tarsal edges raw. As if lids on fire. Nostril as if tickled with a stiff feather. Nose and eyes as if a cold would come on. Tongue as if scalded. As if a ball of red-hot iron in throat. As if lump in throat. As if apple core in throat. Throat so full it felt choked. Pharynx feels like a cavern; chest as if it were a big empty cask. Body as if bruised; pounded all over. As if joint were being chopped with an axe. The right side is most affected, and many symptoms were experienced in the liver; there were also some severe ones in the spleen. The liver-pains were < lying on right (painful) side. The spleen pain was > lying on left (painful) side. Nash has removed many breast tumours by giving a single dose of Phyt . cm during the wane of the moon. The symptoms are < by touch (liver, &c). There is great general sensitiveness. Pressure < pain in joints and ulcers. Pressure with hand > pain in breasts. Pressure on trachea facilitates expectoration. Rubbing > pain in hip. Riding < nose and breathing. < Stepping down high step. Rising from bed = faint feeling. Sitting up = sick and giddy. Standing = faint and dizzy. Gaslight < eyes. Swallowing < . After breakfast head and throat > , gastric symptoms < . Vomiting < headache, > nausea. Hunger soon after eating. (This is like the deadly sinking so often met with in the cancerous diathesis.) < At menstrual periods. Must lie down. < Lying right side. > Lying left side. > Lying on stomach. < Standing and < motion. < Walking. < Raising arm. < Night. < Morning; 3, 4, or 5 a.m.; on waking. < Damp weather; washing; hot drinks. < Exposure to air; open air (but it > eyes). The external use of Phyt . has been attended with good results in cases of ulceration, and I have found a gargle of a few drops of the Ø to a tumbler of water useful in many throat cases. A preparation of the leaves has been used successfully by Hurndall ( H. W ., xxxi. 217) as an external application for carcinomatous growths in dogs; and an ointment prepared with a strong tincture of the leaves as well as the juice of the leaves have been used for malignant ulcers in human beings.

Breast abscess, Bry. (Phyt. follows Bry. when suppuration seems inevitable; pain goes from nipples all over body). < Motion, Bry. Tetanic spasms, Nux (Phyt. is slower than Nux, has everted lips, alternate relaxation and spasm). Pain in breasts when suckling, Crot. t., Phell., Lac c., Borax (Borax, like Phyt., has > from pressure; Borax alone has empty, sucked-out feeling). Sensation of apple core in throat, Hep., Nit. ac. Stringy discharges and clinkers, electric shocks, flying pains, K. bi. Desires cold water (Physt. opp.). Symptoms fly from centre outward (Abrot. opp.) Pains in breast at menstrual period, Calc., Con. Diarrhœa with shreddy membranes, Caust., Ars. < In damp weather, Rhus, Dulc. Pains in tibia, Carb. v., Lach. < After sleep, Lach. Loss of fat (Sabal ser. opp.). Loss of sense of delicacy, Hyo. Bruised, sore feeling, Arn. Hale says K. iod. is the nearest analogue (rheumatism, syphilis, wasting); Merc. and its antidotes are also closely related.

Mind

Delirium. ─ Indisposition to mental exertion; disgust for business on waking early in morning. ─ Melancholy, gloom. ─ Indifference to life. ─ Great fear; is sure she will die. ─ Loss of personal delicacy, complete shamelessness and indifference to exposure of her person. ─ Irritability; restlessness. ─ Irresistible desire to bite teeth together. ─ Cannot be persuaded to take nourishment. ─ Over-sensitive; pain intolerable.

Head

Vertigo: staggering with danger of falling; with dim vision; when rising from bed feels faint. ─ Headache: with nausea; dull; heavy; neuralgic; rheumatic; syphilitic; with backache and bearing down; weekly; < from wet weather. ─ Sore pain over head, < on r. side. ─ Pain in vertex; and sensation of soreness deep in brain as if bruised; when slipping from a high step to ground. ─ One-sided pain, just above eyebrows, with sick stomach; < in forehead, or above eyebrows (glabella most affected); comes every week. ─ Dull, pressive pain in forehead, with slight nausea, cold sweat on forehead and feeling of weakness. ─ Shooting pain from l. eye to vertex. ─ Violent pain at back of l. eye and over eyebrow extending down side of head. ─ Heavy aching in forehead after dinner. ─ Slight pain in forepart of head with increase of hearing. ─ Heaviness of head, with feeling in back part of tongue as if burnt. ─ Headache commencing in frontal region and extending backward. ─ Nausea and headache > by eating, but returning soon with vomiting which < headache and > the nausea. ─ Pressive pain on forehead and upper part of both eyes; on vertex with dryness. ─ Pain in back of head and neck. ─ Head thrown backward. ─ Pain in occiput; and stomach. ─ Rheumatism of r. frontal region with nausea, < morning; of scalp when it rains, with depression. ─ Syphilitic nodes on skull. ─ Tinea capitis. ─ Crusta lactea, moist, fearful itching, with little raw tubercles on scalp, face, and arms.

Eyes

Eyes staring. ─ Blue round eyes. ─ Eyes sunk deep in sockets with livid circles. ─ Sclerotica dark yellow. ─ Sharp pain through ball of eye on reading or writing. ─ Dull aching in eyes, < from motion, light, or exercise. ─ Pressure around eyes in afternoon as if eyes too large. ─ Circum-orbital pains in syphilitic ophthalmia. ─ Panophthalmitis. ─ Aching along lower half r. orbit. ─ Orbital cellulitis. ─ Lids feel granulated; tarsal edges feel scalded, hot, raw. ─ Burning and smarting sensation (feeling of sand) in eyes and lids, with profuse lachrymation and coryza, which is > in the open air. ─ Smarting in inner canthi ( < l.), < by gaslight in evening. ─ Lids agglutinated and swollen, as if poisoned. ─ Reddish-blue swelling of lids ( < l.), < morning; cannot close eyes without pain all forenoon, > afternoon. ─ Fistula lachrymalis. ─ Lids feel on fire. ─ Lupus, epithelioma, &c., of lids. ─ Pupils: contracted (tetanus); much dilated. ─ Photophobia. ─ Motion of one eye independent of that of the other. ─ Double vision; with giddiness and headache. ─ Objects quintupled. ─ Far-sighted.

Ears

Shooting in r. ear. ─ Pains in both ears, < r.; < swallowing. ─ Obstruction in l. Eustachian tube, rushing in l. ear, a feeling as if hearing were dull, while at same time sensitive to minutest sounds. ─ Irritation in one Eustachian tube. ─ Increased sense of hearing (most r.); with pain in forehead. ─ Very peculiar pressure and tension in parotids.

Nose

Flow of mucus from one nostril while the other is stopped. ─ Drawing sensation at root of nose. ─ Feeling in nose and eyes as if a cold would come on. ─ Acrid, excoriating discharge. ─ Wakes 3 a.m. with nose stopped up, discharges clinkers from both nostrils in morning. ─ Sensation in nostrils as if tickled with a stiff feather. ─ Total obstruction of nose, when riding must breathe through mouth; not > by blowing nose; mucus discharged with difficulty. ─ Syphilitic ozæna with bloody sanious discharge and disease of bones. ─ Rodent ulcer.

Face

Face: pale; sunken, blue, suffering; hippocratic distorted. ─ Stupid. ─ Cool sweat on forehead. ─ Heat in face (l.) after dinner with redness of face, coldness of feet, eruption in upper lip (l.). ─ Face very red, almost purple; alternately very pale. ─ Pains in bones of face and head at night, keeping her awake many nights; proceeding esp. from "nodes" on frontal bone, very much like pains of periostitis. ─ Pains in upper jaws. ─ Jaws ached awfully the whole time, it seemed he could not open or shut them. ─ Blotches in face, < afternoon, after washing and eating. ─ Swelling round l. ear and side of face, like erysipelas; thence over scalp; very painful. ─ Ulcers and scaly eruption on face. ─ Chin drawn closely to sternum by convulsive action of muscles of face and neck; lips everted and firm (tetanus). ─ Eruption on upper lip. ─ Ulcers (cancerous) on lips.

Teeth

Teeth all ache; feel elongated and are very sore. ─ Shooting pains in r. upper and lower molars. ─ Irresistible inclination to bite teeth together. ─ Difficult dentition; crying, moaning, restless at night; diarrhœa in hot weather; > biting something hard.

Mouth

The mouth fills with saliva; tenacious, yellowish, ropy, with metallic taste. ─ Cold, sticky, stringy saliva. ─ No saliva. ─ Taste: disagreeable; metallic; burnt; nutty; bitter at first; leaving smarting and coldness towards tip of tongue. ─ Burnt feeling on back of tongue (with heavy head). ─ Tongue: coated white; furred; thick at back; dry, and lips; feels scalded; thick; protruding. ─ Tongue feels rough, with blisters on both sides, and very red tip; great pain in root of tongue when swallowing. ─ Roof of mouth sore. ─ Mouth dry. ─ Submaxillary glands swollen.

Throat

Sensation of dryness in throat and the posterior fauces (provoking cough, with disposition to hawk and clear the throat); tonsils swollen. ─ Uvula large, almost translucent. ─ Fauces congested and of a dark red colour. ─ Sore throat (roughness and rawness), swelling of soft palate in morning, with a thick, white, and yellow mucus about the fauces. ─ Sensation of a lump in throat (when swallowing), causing a continuous desire to swallow; also when turning head to l. ─ Could not swallow, throat so dry and rough. ─ Throat feels like a cavern. ─ < From hot drinks. ─ Difficult swallowing; with every attempt excruciating shooting pains through both ears. ─ Sensation of apple-core in throat. ─ While riding in forenoon sensation of plug in throat, not > by hawking; this sensation was replaced by increased discharge of mucus from posterior nares, discharged with difficulty, constantly exciting attempts to expel it. ─ Sensation of rawness and scraping in throat and tonsils. ─ Burning heat in throat as from coal of fire, as if red-hot iron ball lodged in fauces and whole length of œsophagus; catarrh in throat; diphtheria. ─ Eruption on fauces and œsophagus. ─ Herpes pharyngalis. ─ Soreness of posterior fauces extending into Eustachian tube. ─ Fulness in throat.

Stomach

Intense thirst. ─ Canine hunger; soon after eating. ─ Loss of appetite. ─ Eructations: of air; sour fluid; food in evening. ─ Hiccough, with great inclination to vomit but no nausea. ─ Nausea followed by violent vomiting of mucus, bile, ingesta, worms; of clotted blood and slime, with retching, intense pain, and desire for death to relieve. ─ Vomits undigested food. ─ Frequent vomiting; prostration, fainting, even convulsions, followed by gripes, cramps, vomiting of dark bilious substance. ─ In great agony; said his stomach was pinched together. ─ Bruised and sore feeling at pit of stomach. ─ Heat in stomach. ─ Cutting in pit of stomach, tender to touch. ─ Pains in cardiac portion of stomach, < full respiration and by walking. ─ Pain in region of pylorus.

Abdomen

Intense vomiting and purging, with griping pains and cramps in abdomen. ─ Soreness and pain in r. hypochondrium (during pregnancy). ─ Sore spot, r. hypochondrium, size of dollar, extremely sensitive to touch. ─ Digging in upper and lower portions of liver. ─ Lying on r. side = penetrating pain in r. hypochondrium. ─ Violent dull pressing pain l. hypochondrium, cannot remain in sitting posture, lies on painful side all night and pain is gone in morning. ─ Heavy aching pain in hypochondrium which left as soon as leucorrhœa commenced. ─ Chronic hepatitis, with enlargement and induration. ─ Burning, griping pain in umbilical region. ─ Much rumbling, pain in umbilicus, stools of blood and mucus; gastro-enteritis. ─ Bearing-down pains. ─ Violent pains in abdomen during menstruation in a barren female. ─ Rheumatism extending to abdominal muscles.

Stool and Anus

Constipation, hard stools. ─ Stool with mucus and straining. ─ Constipation habitual; patient says the bowels will not move without the aid of purgatives; feeling of fulness in abdomen before stool, which remains after stool, as if all had not passed. ─ Constipation from torpor of the rectum. ─ Constipation: of the aged; of persons with weak heart. ─ Diarrhœa with sickly feeling in bowels; passage only of mucus and blood, or like scrapings from intestines. ─ Tenesmus. ─ Continual inclination to stool but passes constantly fetid flatus. ─ Diarrhœa early in morning after lemonade. ─ Dysentery. ─ Intense vomiting or purging, with prostration and cramps, as in cholera. ─ Stools: thin, dark brown; of mucus and blood; of bile; from 1 or 2 a.m. till after breakfast; mushy; yellow, then greenish, then dark, bloody; dark, lumpy. ─ Hæmorrhoids permanent and obstinate; bleeding and mucus. ─ Neuralgic pains in anus and lower part of rectum, shooting along perinæum to middle of penis; in middle of night (with constipation). ─ Bloody discharge with heat in rectum. ─ Heat in rectum with burning in stomach. ─ Ulceration; fissure.

Urinary Organs

Weakness, dull pain, and soreness in region of kidneys, < r., connected with heat; uneasiness down ureters; chalk-like sediment in urine. ─ Albuminuria; after scarlatina or diphtheria; chills at night without special fever, accompanied by a form of insanity. ─ Pain in bladder before and during urination. ─ Slight suppression of urine, with pains in loins. ─ Violent, painful urging to pass urine. ─ Copious nocturnal urination. ─ Thick, chalk-like sediment. ─ The dark-red urine leaves a mahogany stain in the chamber. ─ Urine: acid and albuminous; excessive or scanty; stains clothes yellow.

Male Sexual Organs

Sharp pains (and hard, grinding pain) running up each spermatic cord; later continued soreness in place of the pains. ─ Gurgling sensation in prostate gland. ─ Complete loss of desire, absence of erections and relaxation of parts during the proving. ─ Impotence. ─ Gonorrhœa; gleet; orchitis, with suppuration and fistulous ulcer. ─ Syphilis: chancres; ulcerated throat; ulcers on genitals; bubo; rheumatism.

Female Sexual Organs

Menses: too frequent and copious; mammæ painful; increase of tears, saliva, bile, urine; rheumatic subjects. ─ Menses: amenorrhœa complicated with ovarian irritation or disease; very painful menstruation in apparently barren women when occurring in connection with rheumatism; shreds of membrane are passed with the menstrual flow. ─ Leucorrhœa: uterine, thick, tenacious, irritating. ─ Profuse, thick, tenacious, from swollen Nabothian glands. ─ Threatened miscarriage; bearing-down pains; involuntary straining and hæmorrhage per vaginum caused in woman seven months pregnant. ─ Sensation as though menses would appear all the time. ─ Dysmenorrhœa accompanying erosion or ulceration of the cervix; menses too often; too profuse, with corresponding increase of the tears, and other secretions. ─ Metrorrhagia. ─ Inflammation, swelling, and suppuration of the mammæ. ─ Neuralgia of breasts. ─ Mastitis, where the hardness is very apparent from the first, with great burning; very sensitive nipples or breasts, which are more or less painful; even after suppuration these characteristics continue. ─ Fulness of both breasts; lump in upper part of l. ─ Abscesses; Fistulæ; tumours; cancer; hypertrophy. ─ Irritable tumour; very sensitive and painful; < at menstrual period. ─ Nipples cracked and excoriated; intense suffering on putting child to breast; pains radiate from nipple all over body. ─ Breasts hard as stones after confinement. ─ Breasts full of hard, painful nodosities. ─ Suppression of lochia. ─ Pain in sacrum, down to knees and ankles, then up to sacrum, jerks here and there, after confinement.

Respiratory Organs

Hoarseness and aphonia. ─ Tickling in l. side larynx with hacking cough, aching r. side of breast, great dryness of throat. ─ Sensation of roughness in the bronchia. ─ Laryngismus, thumbs and toes flexed; features distorted; eye muscles act independently. ─ Respiration difficult and oppressed; loud mucous riles. ─ Faint, with sighing, slow breathing. ─ Panting. ─ Cough: hacking, dry, hawking; from tickling in larynx or dryness in pharynx: < night, on lying down; dry, bronchial. ─ Cough with: scraping and tickling in throat; burning pains in trachea and larynx, sensation of contraction of glottis, laboured breathing; sensation of ulcerated spot in trachea just above breast-bone, could only expectorate (pus) by pressing on this spot pains through mid-sternum. ─ Hoarse, croupy, barking cough, < at night < out of doors. ─ Expectoration: thick, tough; thick, starch-like mucus, profuse and exhausting with pharyngitis. ─ Dryness of larynx and trachea, < evening.

Chest

Sharp pains through upper part of chest, preventing a long breath. ─ Stitch from r. chest to back. ─ Pain and suffocation in lungs, throat, and fauces. ─ Pains in lungs, 7 a.m. ─ Tenderness and lameness of muscles of chest, as if bruised. ─ (Chest feels as if it were a big empty cask.). ─ Rheumatism of lower intercostal muscles from exposure to cold and dampness. ─ Spots size of lentil on chest. ─ Hard, tender swelling midway between nipple and sternum, but nearer latter; restless nights; (in baby a few months old).

Heart

In night awoke with lameness near cardiac region, with much nervous restlessness, < motion, esp. < expiration; kept him awake long time. ─ Constrictive feeling in præcordia with pressure in temples. ─ Great pain in præcordia, much < walking. ─ Occasional shocks of pain in heart region, as soon as this ceases similar pain appears in r. arm. ─ Heart-beats distinctly felt. ─ Fatty degeneration; lassitude and indisposition to move. ─ Pulse: small, irregular, with great excitement in chest, esp. in cardiac region; full but soft; intermittent; weak.

Neck and Back

Hardness of gland in r. side of neck. ─ Stiff neck, < on r. side; in bed; after midnight; on waking. ─ Back very stiff every morning. ─ Sensation as if cold iron were pressed on painful scapula. ─ Both scapulæ ache continually. ─ Towards evening, while riding, laming pain began l. side back below scapula; 9.30 p.m. it had reached spine and was a pricking stitching. ─ Severe pain behind scapulæ when walking. ─ Intense griping in small of back. ─ Pain running down spine from nape. ─ Pain in loins with suppression of urine. ─ Constant, dull, heavy pain in lumbar and sacral regions. ─ Pains shooting from sacrum down both hips to feet.

Limbs

Intense cramps, muscles gather in large knots, hard and ridged; come and go suddenly. ─ Rheumatism of all joints 3 p.m. ─ Sudden transference of internal pains to extremities. ─ Pains in limbs always in outer aspects. ─ Patient is subject to rheumatic pains on change of weather, esp. in hips and thighs; rheumatic muscular or chronic rheumatism. ─ Rheumatic pains in arms and hands. ─ Cold hands and feet.

Upper Limbs

Enlarged glands in axillæ. ─ Shooting in r. shoulder-joint with stiffness and paralysis. ─ Rheumatism of (l.) shoulder (esp. in syphilitics); pains fly like electric shocks from one part to another; < night and damp weather. ─ Pains at attachment of deltoid. ─ Weakness and aching in r. humerus, < motion and extension. ─ Dull aching and excessive tenderness, as from a bruise, in outer muscle of r. arm. ─ Hands tremble. ─ Rheumatic pains in hands; sudden pricking. ─ Painful, hard, shiny swelling of joints of all fingers. ─ Bony growth in palmar aspect of one finger. ─ Whitlow. ─ Ends of fingers all throb and ache as if going to suppurate. ─ Shooting like needles in finger-joints; in top of l. thumb.

Lower Limbs

Neuralgic pain in outer side of both thighs (shooting from sacrum); sciatica. ─ Sharp, cutting pain in hip, drawing, cannot touch floor; pain runs down outside of thigh, < night, and esp. < after sleep. ─ Rheumatic pains in lower extremities, < damp weather. ─ Sensation of shortening of tendons back of knee when walking. ─ Leg drawn up. ─ Legs tremble. ─ Pain in dorsum of r. foot, 4 a.m. ─ Syphilitic and mercurial rheumatism; nightly pains in periosteum of tibia, with nodes and irritable ulcers on lower leg. ─ Stitches in various parts, always from without inward and near surface. ─ Ankles swollen. ─ Feet puffed, soles burn. ─ Ulcers on inner sides of soles. ─ Aching of heels, dull, wearing; > raising feet above level of body. ─ Pain in great toe waking him at night. ─ Corn painful.

Generalities

Extremities stiff, hands clenched, feet extended, toes flexed, teeth clenched, lips everted, firm, chin drawn on sternum, opisthotonus. ─ Great desire for cold water, for bathing in it. ─ Pains are pressing, shooting, and sore. ─ Great exhaustion and prostration. ─ Sore and stiff. ─ Soreness from head to foot in all muscles. ─ Pains and numbness followed by itching and burning. ─ Pains came suddenly in full force and so continued till they ceased; followed by drowsiness, stupor, or sleep. ─ Bones and glands inflamed and swollen.

Skin

Inner head

Headache : severe ; violent ; one-sided, just above eyebrows, with sickness of stomach ; dull, heavy in forehead ; dull, pressive, with vertigo and impairment of vision ; in diphtheria ; rheumatic, syphilitic or neuralgic.
Painful pressure on forehead and upper part of both eyes.
Dull pressing pain in forehead, accompanied by slight nausea, with cool perspiration in forehead and feeling of weakness.
Shooting pain from left eye to vertex.
Pain extending back from frontal region.
Sharp, shooting pains in right temple.
Pressure in top of head with dryness.
Pain in top of head and a feeling as if brain were bruised, when stepping from a high step to ground.
Heavy aching feeling in head at 1.30 P. M.
Sore pain over head, < right side.
Sensation of soreness deep in brain.
Sick-headache : in forehead ; with backache and bearing down ; weekly.
Pain in back of head and neck.

Outer head

Rheumatism : of right frontal region, with nausea, < in morning ; of scalp ; dull pains, come on every time it rains, with depression of spirits ; especially following diphtheria.
Scaly eruption on scalp.
Eczema capitis, moist, fearful itching, little raw tubercles on scalp, face and arms.
Tinea capitis ; < washing it when he is warm.
Syphilitic nodes on skull.

Sight and eyes

Photophobia.
Double vision with giddiness and headache.
Dimness of vision.
Pupils contracted ; tetanus.
Eyes staring.
Blue around eyes.
Feeling of sand in eyes, with soreness and burning.
Burning and smarting in eyes and lids, with profuse lachrymation, > in open air.
Sharp pain goes through ball of eye on reading or writing.
Dull aching pains in eyes, < from motion, light, or exercise.
Rheumatic pain in and about eye.
Pressure around eyes in afternoon, as if eyes were too large.
Circumorbital pains in syphilitic ophthalmia.
Suppurative choroiditis (pan-opthalmitis) in right eye of a child, after a needle operation for cataract ; lids enormously swollen, very hard and red, conjunctiva injected, chemosis, anterior chamber filled with pus and cornea tending towards suppuration ; child pale,
weak and restless.
Cellulitis : inflammation slow in its course and not attended by severe pain ; infiltration of cellular tissue of orbit very pronounced, hard and unyielding to touch ; eyelids reddish-blue, hard and swollen ; eyeball pressed forward and its mobility impaired or
lost entirely ; chemosis ; more or less dull aching pain ; lachrymation ; photophobia.
Eyes inflamed.
Rheumatic ophthalmia ; lids much swollen.
Catarrhal ophthalmia ; burning, smarting, tingling pain ; itching < by gaslight, abundant flow of tears.
Gradual conjunctivitis, with circumorbital pain ; soreness in periosteum and scalp, as of rheumatic origin.
Motions of one eye independent of the other.
Lachrymation, with coryza.
Fistula lachrymalis.
Lids feel as if granulated and tarsal edges have a scalded, hot feeling, as if raw ; granulated, sandy sensation in lids, with same sensation upon edges.
Lids feel as if on fire. θ Acute rheumatic ophthalmia.
Eyelids agglutinated and œdematous.
Reddish-blue swelling of eyelids, < on left side and in morning ; hard, unyielding cellulitis.
Scrofulous swelling of glands of eyelids.
Malignant ulcers on lid : lupus, epithelioma, etc.

Hearing and ears

Shooting pains through both ears when swallowing ; right side worse.
Eustachian tubes feel obstructed.

Smell and nose

Drawing sensation about root of nose.
Sensation in nostril as if tickled with a stiff feather.
Feeling in nose and eyes as if cold would come on.
Total obstructions of nose, when riding must breathe through mouth ; not > by blowing nose ; mucus discharged with difficulty ; constant hawking. θ Coryza.
Flow of mucus from one nostril, while the other is stopped ; both stopped up while riding. θ Coryza.
Wakes at 3 A. M., with nose stopped up, discharges clinkers from both nostrils in morning.
Thin watery discharge from nostril, increasing until nose becomes stuffed.
Coryza and cough with redness of eyes and lachrymation, photophobia ; feeling of sand in eyes, with soreness and burning.
Acrid discharge from nose excoriating nose and upper lip. θ Scarlatina.
Syphilitic ozæna, with bloody, sanious discharge and disease of bones.
Noli me tangere and cancerous affection of nose.

Upper face

Stupid expression of face, enlarged pupils, violent headache, staggering.
Distortion of face.
Face : sunken ; pale, hippocratic ; blue around eyes ; yellowish complexion ; looking blue and suffering.
Cool sweat on forehead.
Heat in face (l. side), after dinner ; with redness of face, cold feet, eruption on left upper lip.
Pains in bones of face and head, at night.
Prosopalgia in syphilitic and rheumatic subjects.
Blotches in face ; < in P. M., after washing and eating.
Swelling around left ear and side of face, like erysipelas ; thence over scalp ; very painful.
Ulcers and eruptions (scaly) on face.

Lower face

Chin drawn closely to sternum by convulsive action of muscles of face and neck. θ Tetanus.
Lips everted and firm. θ Tetanus.
Upper lip excoriated. θ Coryza.
Eruption on upper lip.
(OBS :) Cancerous sore on upper lip and nose (application of leaf and root).
Ulcers on lips.
Parotid and submaxillary glands swollen.

Teeth and gums

Disposition to bite teeth together.
Teeth all ache : feel sore and elongated.
Rheumatic, neuralgic, mercurial or syphilitic toothache.
Difficult dentition ; child crying, moaning, restless and feverish, particularly at night ; in hot weather vomiting and diarrhœa ; retarded dentition ; wants to bite on something hard continually and seems relieved by it.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste : disagreeable, metallic.
Great pain in root of tongue, fauces, etc.
Burnt feeling on back part of tongue.
Tongue : thickly coated at back ; coated yellow and dry ; furred ; fiery red at tip ; feels as if scalded ; coated greyish-yellowish ; hot, rough, tender and smarting at tip ; small ulcers like those caused by mercury ; thick ;
protruding.
Tongue and lips dry, much pain in fauces when swallowing.

Inner mouth

Profuse saliva, sometimes yellowish, often thick, ropy, tenacious ; mercurial ptyalism, with inflamed gums.
Salivation with metallic taste in mouth. θ Diphtheria.
Sensation of dryness in mouth with cough.
Roof of mouth sore ; profuse salivation.
Ulcerated sore mouth.
Small ulcers on inside of right cheek, very painful ; he cannot chew on that side.
Inflammation of posterior nares, pharynx, tonsils and soft palate ; uvula and tonsils ulcerated ; extreme sensitiveness of mucous membrane ; deglutition painful ; tongue coated ; fetor oris ; eruption on face, arms and
body ; has taken much mercury. θ Syphilis.
Severe glossitis ; deep ulceration of tongue and gums ; looseness of teeth ; tonsils, uvula and velum palati ulcerated ; in consequence of large doses of mercury. θ Syphilis.

Palate and throat

Fauces and pharynx look dry.
Dryness : of throat ; in throat and posterior fauces ; in upper part of pharynx, disposition to hawk and clear throat, without affording relief ; in fauces provoking hacking, dry cough ; in throat inducing cough ; in throat < morning and evening ; of
throat soon produces soreness.
Throat : very dry, rough and sore ; dryness, roughness, burning and smarting in fauces.
Hot feeling, as if a ball of red-hot iron had lodged in throat.
Sensation of a lump in throat, causing a continuous desire to swallow ; like a plug in throat ; < left side.
Sensation of throat being so full that it felt choked ; hawking to rid throat and posterior nares of mucus.
Pressing pain in right side of throat.
Increased discharge of mucus from posterior nares, detached with difficulty, continually excited a disposition to hawk.
Uvula large, almost translucent.
Strings of mucus adhering to upper part of pharynx.
Deglutition : painful ; difficult ; with every attempt excruciating shooting pains through ears ; regurgitation through nostrils ; unable to swallow even water ; almost impossible because throat felt so dry and rough.
Tonsils : and palate congested, bluish or dark-purple ; sore, red and swollen ; right much enlarged, dark-red, burning in fauces and whole length of œsophagus ; large, bluish, ulcerated ; throat feels as after eating choke-pears ; induration and
ulceration ; chronic enlargement ; aphthous patches with rheumatic pain in lumbar region ; follicular sore throat ; quinsy.
Cannot drink hot fluids ; choking ; ulcers on tonsils. θ Syphilis.
Feeling of rawness, scraping and excoriation in throat.
Throat sore ; the isthmus congested and of a dark-red color ; dryness of throat, with some swelling of tonsils.
General soreness of posterior fauces and apparent extension of irritation into Eustachian tubes.
Darkish-red inflammation of fauces, tonsils swollen ; ulcerated ; thick, white or yellow mucus.
Soreness of throat, and a feeling as of a lump when swallowing saliva ; same sensation felt on turning head to left side.
Sore throat, with derangement of digestive organs ; fetid breath and constipation ; after diphtheria or scarlatina ; tubercular ; after syphilis.
Sore throat on right side ; throat red and tumefied ; no pain when swallowing food, but when swallowing saliva ; low-spirited indifferent to his surroundings, wishes some one would knock him on the head and kill him ; tongue coated white and slimy ; has to
drink often to keep throat moist ; weight on back of neck ; pressing pain going up back of neck, on right side only ; right side of head feels as if firmly pressed, causing pain in eyes ; pain in throat from root of tongue downward towards outer attachment of
clavicle ; cannot bear clothes on throat ; drawing, stinging, pressing pain down right side of neck towards shoulder blade.
Scarlatina anginosa : tending to suppuration or ulceration ; fever rages with unwonted severity ; no eruption ; nose and upper lip much excoriated by an acrid discharge ; slight delirium ; great prostration.
Hoarseness and persistent sore throat after diphtheria.
Chronic sore throat : fauces and pharynx look dry and of a dark color, with a few adherent strings of mucus high up ; hawking of phlegm morning and evening ; aphonia.
Pharynx dry, rough, feels like a cavern.
Chronic follicular pharyngitis ; membrane lining fauces and pharynx as well as velum pendulum and uvula pale, puffed and flabby ; uvula large, almost translucent ; distressing sensation of enlargement of calibre of pharynx and œsophagus from choanæ to epigastrium,
provokes a cough, paroxysmal, extremely distressing, and attended by very profuse and exhausting expectoration of thick starch-like mucus ; whole chest feels like a big empty cask, as if its calibre were enlarged tenfold ; great debility ; patient, who is intolerant of
stimulants, can take whisky to any extent and with great temporary relief.
Chronic granular pharyngitis ; burning sensation as of a hot substance in throat ; voice gives out ; burning and soreness, greatly < by prolonged use of voice.
Catarrhal inflammation of head and throat, closely simulating diphtheria ; tough, white mucus from posterior nares, clinging tightly to posterior wall of throat, resembling large patch of diphtheritic membrane.
Swollen glands ; tonsils swollen and covered with greyish patches ; dizziness and backache.
Diphtheritic inflammation and ulceration of throat.
Diphtheria : sick and dizzy when trying to sit up ; frontal headache ; pains shooting from throat into ears, especially on trying to swallow ; face flushed ; tongue much coated, protruded ; thickly coated at back, fiery
red at tip ; breath fetid, putrid ; vomiting ; difficulty of swallowing ; tonsils swollen, covered with membrane, first upon left, three or four patches ; tonsils, uvula and back part of throat covered with ash-colored exudation ; tonsils covered with dirty,
white, pseudo membrane ; small white or yellow spots on tonsils coalesce and form patches of membrane ; membrane has appearance of dirty wash-leather ; exudation pearly or greyish white ; great thirst ; < from hot drinks ; dyspnœa ; ropy, offensive
mucus lining mouth and throat ; glands of neck very tender ; pain in neck and back, body sore as if bruised, groans with pain, especially when trying to move or turn in bed ; aching limbs ; great prostration ; violent chill, soon followed by high fever ; fever
without chill ; pulse 120, 140, weak ; rash on skin ; remarkably nervous phenomena ; consecutive paralysis ; leaves vision impaired, hearing dull ; in cold weather generally epidemic ; usually of catarrhal or rheumatic origin, brought on by exposure to damp
and cold atmosphere or sleeping in damp, ill-ventilated rooms.
Ulceration of mucous membrane of upper part of alimentary tract. θ Diphtheria.
Scarlet fever, with diphtheritic complications.
Induration of parotid glands in diphtheria.
Parotitis : inflammation of submaxillary glands.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Great thirst.
Hunger soon after eating.
Loss of appetite.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Violent efforts to eructate to relieve restricted sensation in right hypochondrium.
Nausea : with eructations of flatus and sour fluids ; with severe pain in umbilical region.
Vomiting : easy, without much nausea ; of ingesta, bile and blood, with great accumulation of flatus in stomach and bowels ; violent, every few minutes ; comes on slowly, preceded by nausea and is excessive ; of mucus, bile, ingesta, worms, blood ; and
purging with griping pains and cramps in abdomen, without relief ; of food and milk, in teething children ; in diphtheria.
Frequent vomiting, prostration, sometimes fainting, even convulsions, followed slowly by gripes, cramps, vomiting of dark bilious substance.
Violent vomiting of clotted blood and slime, with retching, intense pain and desire for death to relieve.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Bruised and sore feeling at pit of stomach.
Heat in stomach.
Pain in pit of stomach as from a heavy blow or concussion there, followed by cramps in abdomen and coolness.
Cutting in pit of stomach, which is tender to touch.
Pains in cardiac portions of stomach < by a full inspiration and by walking.
Pain in region of pylorus.

Hypochondria

A sore spot in right hypochondrium not larger than a dollar, extremely sensitive to touch.
Digging pain in right hypochondrium, in upper and lower portions of liver.
Cannot lie on right side on account of penetrating pain in r. hypochondrium.
Soreness and pain in right hypochondrium during pregnancy.
Chronic hepatitis, with enlargement and induration.

Abdomen and loins

Griping and cramps in abdomen.
Burning, griping pains in umbilical region.
Great rumbling in abdomen and pain in umbilicus, with stools of mucus and blood ; gastro-enteritis.
Bearing-down pains.
Violent pains in abdomen during menstruation in a barren female.
Chronic inflammation of bowels, of five years' standing.
Ulceration of mucous membrane of upper part of alimentary tract. θ Diphtheria.
Rheumatism extending to abdominal muscles.

Stools and rectum

Continual inclination to go to stool, but passes constantly fetid flatus.
Diarrhœa with sickly feeling in bowels ; copious discharge of blood, mucus and what looked like scrapings of inner surface of intestines.
Diarrhœa early in morning ; after lemonade.
Stools : thin, dark brown ; of mucus and blood ; like intestinal scrapings ; tenesmus ; of bile.
Dysentery.
Intense vomiting and purging, with prostration and cramps, as in cholera.
Feeling of fulness in abdomen before stool, which remains after stool as if all had not passed.
Constipation : hard stools ; from torpor of rectum ; habitual, says bowels will not move without aid of purgatives ; of long standing, pain shooting from anus to lower part of rectum along perineum to middle of penis ; of the aged or those with weak heart.
Ulceration and fissure of rectum.
Hemorrhoids : permanent and obstinate ; bleeding and mucous.
Bloody discharge with heat in rectum.
Fissures of anus.

Urinary organs

Weakness, dull pain and soreness in region of kidneys ; most on right side and connected with heat ; uneasiness down ureters ; chalk-like sediment in urine.
Albuminuria : after scarlatina or diphtheria ; chills at night without special fever, accompanied by a form of insanity.
Pain in region of bladder before and during urination.
Pain in region of bladder, dark red urine which stains vessel and is hard to remove, urine excessive in quantity, decidedly albuminous, with greatly increased specific gravity.
Urgent and painful inclination to pass water.
Copious nocturnal urination.
Urine : albuminous ; excessive or scanty ; dark red, stains vessel ; color of coffee, stains clothes yellow.

Male sexual organs

Impotence.
Gonorrhœa and gleet : orchitis.
Syphilis : chancres ; ulcerated throat ; ulcers on genitals ; inguinal bubo ; rheumatism.
Much soreness and rheumatic pains in spermatic cords, with rheumatic orchitis.
Orchitis : acute and chronic, with suppuration and fistulous ulcer.

Female sexual organs

Ovarian neuralgia and ovaritis ; sometimes with rheumatic complications.
Uterine leucorrhœa, proceeding from glandular portion of cervix ; ulceration of os ; scirrhus.
Metrorrhagia.
Menses : too frequent and too copious ; mamma painful ; increase of tears, saliva, bile and urine ; rheumatic females.
Menorrhagia ; involuntary straining and hemorrhage per vagina.
Shreds of membrane passed with menstrual flow.
Violent pains in abdomen during menstruation, in a barren woman.
Dysmenorrhœa and costiveness from the time menstruation commenced ; for several years has ben subject to attacks of colic, preceded by weakness, oppression, inclination to take a deep breath, soon followed by a sore spot, in beginning not larger than a dollar, in right
hypochondrium, extremely sensitive to touch ; spot enlarged and became very painful, with sensation of constriction or choking in part as if from flatus, which gave rise to violent efforts to eructate, frequently ending in vomiting, which gave no relief ; slightly > by sitting
up in bed and leaning forward ; could lie in no position, except on stomach, when pain got easier she fell asleep in that position ; sometimes painful inclination to pass urine the color of coffee, which stained her clothes yellow ; disagreeable taste in mouth, as soon as pain
moved downward she was > ; attack generally commenced about an hour and a half after dinner, sometimes about an hour and a half after supper, never at any other time.
Dysmenorrhœa, accompanying erosion or ulceration of cervix.
Amenorrhœa, complicated with ovarian irritation or disease.
Leucorrhœa : uterine, thick, tenacious and irritating ; profuse, thick, tenacious from swollen Nabothian glands in women who have suffered from inflamed or broken breasts and various glandular swellings and abscesses.
Neuralgic affections of breast.
Irritable mamma : no swelling, induration or tumor, only a painfulness at menstrual period ; during lactation.
Neuralgia of mamma.
Irritable tumor of breast ; very sensitive and painful, < at menstrual periods ; pain extended down arm of affected side, and at times caused sympathetic enlargement of a gland in axilla.
Mastitis (after Bryonia).
Inflammation, swelling and suppuration of mamma.
Abscesses or fistulous ulcers of mamma.
Tumors, scirrhus and cancer of mamma.
Hypertrophy of breast and uterus.
Left breast fearfully tumefied for six weeks.
Nipples cracked and excoriated.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

Pain in sacrum, down to knees and ankles, then up to sacrum ; jerks here and there, after confinement.
Suppression of lochia.
Every two or three hours sudden, severe stinging pains throughout breasts, lasting several minutes, > from pressure with hands ; at same time milk began to ooze out ; is nursing second child three months old.
On second day after confinement excessive flow of milk ; nipples so sensitive that nursing produced intense suffering, seeming to start from nipples and radiate over whole body, going to backbone and streaking up and down it, causing unbearable pain ; nipples excoriated and
fissured.
Right breast seems full to overflowing, stony hard and painful ; for several days excessive flow of milk, causing prostration ; fever ; indifferent to life ; predicts death.
Hardness of mamma ; breast hard as a stone, after weaning.
Four days after confinement severe chill, followed by fever ; in a few hours both mamma hard, swollen and painful ; nipples very sensitive.
Mamma hot, painful, swollen ; third week after confinement.
Breast inflamed, tender, greatly swollen, hard, painful ; on using breast-pump milk that came was thick and stringy ; in former pregnancy suffered from mammary abscesses.
Mammary gland full of hard, painful nodosities.
Redness, tenderness and nodulated indurations of breast, with an acuminated appearance of nodules ; chills and great tendency to early suppuration.
Few days after confinement breast suddenly became hard and inflamed and flow of milk ceased ; blistered and poulticed for six weeks and finally lanced, but all to no purpose ; left breast greatly swollen ; sharp, lancinating pains.
Breast shows an early tendency to cake ; especially useful when suppuration is inevitable ; when child nurses pain goes from nipple all over body.
Inflammation of mamma ; pus formed, was lanced ; fistulous openings downward and backward ; four inches in extent ; emaciated, cold hands and feet and trembling.
Mammary abscess ; several painful nodules and three fistulæ discharging ichorous pus ; erratic rheumatic pains, the two alternating in intensity.
Gathered breasts with large fistulous, gaping and angry ulcers, discharging a watery, fetid pus.
Enlarged mammary gland, with fistulous opening of five years' standing.
Fistulous ulcers and unhealthy granulation with fetid discharge.
Caked breasts ; nipples cracked and excoriated.
Ulcer of breast, an inch in diameter, gaping, angry, filled with unhealthy granulations ; probe passed obliquely downward until it reached a hard, sensitive tumor, about size of hen's egg ; discharge offensive and sanious.
Nipples very sensitive.
Nipples sore and fissured, with intense suffering on putting child to breast ; pain seems to start from nipple and radiate over whole body.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Hoarseness and aphonia.
Aphonia in consequence of a cold.
Dryness of larynx and trachea, < towards evening.
Tickling in left side of larynx with hacking cough.
Burning in larynx and trachea, with a sensation of contraction of glottis ; labored breathing.
Laryngismus stridulus ; frequent spasmodic closure of larynx ; drawing of thumbs into palm ; flexion of toes ; distortion of face ; muscles of eye affected so that motions of one eye were independent of other.
Dry bronchial cough, with sensation of roughness and slight increase of heat in trachea and bronchia ; can only expectorate when pressing finger against sore spot in trachea.
Influenza with derangement of digestive organs ; thin, watery discharge from nose, increasing till nose became stuffed ; cannot breathe through nose ; difficulty of swallowing ; dry, hacking cough, with hawking, excited by tickling in larynx and dryness of pharynx.

Respiration

Respiration difficult, oppressed ; loud mucous rales.
Constant moaning and gasping for air. θ Diphtheria.
Faint with sighing, slow breathing.
Panting for breath.
Asthma.

Cough

Cough : hacking, dry, with hawking ; excited by tickling in larynx or dryness in pharynx ; < at night as soon as he lies down ; hard, accompanied by scraping and tickling in throat ; harassing, hacking after every cold ;
incessant, with sensation of na ulcerated spot in windpipe just above breastbone ; could only expectorate (pus) by pressing on this spot ; paroxysmal, distressing, with pharyngitis ; with pain in chest and side ; chronic, generally hard and dry.
Hoarse, dry, croupy cough ; burning pain in larynx and trachea ; < at night ; pains have upward direction ; breathing labored ; cough became loose and ceased with copious expectoration of yellow mucus.

Lower limbs

Pains shooting from sacrum down outside of both hips.
Sharp, cutting pain in hip, drawing ; leg drawn up, cannot touch floor ; hip disease on right side after mercury or in syphilitic children.
Syphilitic and gonorrhœal sciaticas, with sharp, lancinating pain, not inclined to remain in one part long at a time ; often darting along whole length of limb in quick, successive impulses, rendering leg powerless, numb and heavy, even to extremity of toes.
Pain in outer side of thigh ; soreness in left groin ; pressing, shooting, drawing, aching in thigh ; great lassitude and desire to lie down. θ Sciatica.
Sciatica ; periostitis ; nodes on tibia.
Chronic rheumatism of left hip joint, use of which was lost ; synovial membrane implicated ; considerable tumefaction from effusion ; no swelling of limb ; pain obtuse, heavy, aching, < in damp weather ; complained of coldness of limb ; pain < in
warmth ; much emaciation ; night sweats, acid in reaction ; urine generally scanty, but sometimes very clear ; enlargement of glands of neck and axillæ.
Occasional spasms of stomach and diaphragm for some years, and for the last six months severe pain in hip joint, mostly behind trochanter major ; pains sharp, cutting, drawing, and occurred from 4 to 5 A. M., driving him immediately from bed ; on first rising leg drawn
up so that only toe would reach floor ; rubbing and heat would afford some slight relief, but energetic walking was the only means of rendering it endurable ; after a few hours in morning severe pains passed off and only a soreness and dull pain disturbed him till next
morning ; pains sometimes appeared in middle of tibia and fibula an down great toe.
Neuralgic pain on outer side of thighs.

Limbs in general

Pains in middle of long bones, or attachment of muscles.
Pain in joints with great heat tormented him for weeks, first in fingers of left hand, then in other joints, then in right side, changing locality continually ; when it attacked one joint it increased for five or six hours to an unbearable height,
as if joint were being chopped with an axe ; then it decreased for five or six hours, but before it had fully abated it had begun in another joint ; > from midnight till morning ; after pain had left joint remained immovable for a long while.
Rheumatic pains below knees and in arms.
Severe pains in arms and legs from elbows and knees to fingers and toes ; < from motion and contact ; syphilis.

Lecture

This is a very imperfectly proved remedy, and it is only possible to present fragments of it.

The mental symptoms have not been brought out, but the remedy has some striking features.

You will notice the resemblance of this drug to Mercury, and it is an antidote to mercury. In those lingering mercurial bone pains, where the patient has been salivated; the pains come on at night from the warmth of the bed; the body aches; a chronic, sore, bruised state; soreness of the periosteum where the flesh is thin, over the tibia; joints; soreness of the muscles; drawing and cramping; drawing in the muscles of the back; backache, worse at night; worse from the warmth of the bed.

The patient suffers from these symptoms in cold, damp weather, as in Mercury. Tendency to ulceration, hence its usefulness in syphilis; old, chronic, syphilitic ulcers; the patient has been salivated; had Mercury rubbed in; he became saturated with it, but it no longer helps. Ulcers in the throat; on the skin; on mucous membranes anywhere.

Spasmodic conditions; drawing in the muscles; this may extend to violent spasms; opisthotonos; sometimes the cervical region is affected and the head is drawn back; jerking and twitching of the muscles.

Glands

Phytolacca is a glandular remedy.

The glands become inflamed, and hard. It produces sore throats, with inflammation of the glands of the neck, particularly the sub maxillary and parotid. Inflammation of the throat with the accumulation of thick, tenacious mucus; swelling of the tonsils. Low grade inflammation like erysipelas.

The symptoms are aggravation at night, on cold days, in a cold room, and from the heat of the bed; so that there is a controversy between heat and cold.

It seems that the remedy centres in the mammary glands. Soreness and lumps in the breasts from each cold, damp spell; becomes chilled and a sore breast results; sore breast in connection with the menses; a nursing woman is exposed to the cold, the breast inflames and the milk becomes stringy; coagulated milk.

This comes out in the proving, but poke root has been extensively used by cattle raisers when the cow's milk became thick and there were lumps in the bag, and when the condition was brought on from the cow standing out in the rain.

Almost any excitement centers in the mammary gland; fear or an accident; lumps form, pains, heat, swelling, tumefaction; even violent inflammation and suppuration. No other remedy in the Materia Medica centres so in the mammary gland. Mercury is similar; when the patient takes cold the glands become sore. If every tribulation makes the glands sore in a nursing woman, give her Phytolacca.

When a mother says she has no milk, or that the milk is scanty, thick, unhealthy; dries up soon; Phytolacca becomes then a constitutional remedy if there are no contra-indicating symptoms. A bloody watery discharge which continued for five years after weaning the infant was cured by Phyto. The breast is so sore that, when she nurses the child, she almost goes into spasms, with the pain extending down the back and limbs all over the body.

Diphtheria . In certain epidemics; great tumefaction of the throat; swelling of the glands of the neck, parotid and sub maxillary; aching in the bones; fetor from the mouth, with heavily coated tongue; great aching in the back; nose bleed; soreness of the muscles.

Analogous to Mercurius; they are closely related in diphtheria. At times in diphtheria we can only obtain the fetor, loaded tongue, exudation, swollen glands and stiff neck.

This looks like Mercurius or one of the Mercuries. The Protoiodide is right sided, and stays there or may go to the left side. The Biniodide goes from left to right . The Merc. cyanide has a thick, green membranous cast, extending from the nose to the throat. In Phytolacca we have many features of Mercury.

It has cured syphilitic nodes on the skull and shin bones.

Skin

Many eruptions.

"Squamous eruptions; Pityriasis, psoriasis."

"Ringworm."

"Barber's itch."

"Rash on body; measles; scarlet eruptions all over the body."

It is not surprising that it cures scarlatina, as it has this scarlet rash, the sore throat and glandular involvement.

It has the ability to delay the formation of malignant growths, especially in the breast; glandular tumors that become hard and scirrhous. Until this remedy was known there was but one remedy for the old cicatrices in the mammary gland. Women who were confined years before, had abscesses of the breast which were poulticed and lanced had a cicatrix left, and now in the present confinement they have trouble; inflammation in the old cicatrices; ulceration which eats off the lacteal glands or turns the ducts aside and twists them; high inflammation - throbbing and pain; milk bloody.

Graphites was the old routine remedy, but Phytolacca, is a better remedy and suits the general concomitants oftener. The symptoms usually found in an inflamed breast after confinement are: aching in the back and bone pains; fever and shivering.

Phytolacca has these and falls into the very nature of the case. Graphites has it only in a limited way. if there is high fever; congestion to the head; throbbing carotids; much redness, and the redness radiates from the nipple, Belladonna is the remedy.

When the entire gland is as heavy as a stone, and hard, and the patient is sensitive to motion and touch, Bryonia. Mercury when the general symptoms agree. Hepar and Silicea after suppuration is inevitable, especially when the only comfort is obtained from heat. Hepar when there is extreme pain and soreness, irritability and this relief from heat; it limits the extent of the suppuration and opens the part without pain.

Nose

The most distressing, lingering, inveterate, old catarrhs with destruction of the bones of the nose.

"Total obstruction of the nose: when riding, must breathe through the mouth."

"Coryza and cough, with redness of eyes and lachrymation; photophobia; feeling of sand in the eyes, with soreness and burning."

"Syphilitic ozaena, with bloody, sanious discharge and disease of bone."

"Noli me tangere and cancerous affections of nose."

It is somewhat like Graphites, in that it seeks out fissures in which to establish inflammation, induration and eruptions. Where the circulation is feeble it has the tendency to establish induration.

"Face sunken, pale, hippocratic; blue around eyes; yellowish complexion; looking blue and suffering .

Pains in bones of head and face at night."

"Swelling around left ear and side of face like erysipelas; thence over scalp; very painful."

"Lips everted and firm. Tetanus."

"Ulcers on lips."

"Parotid and sub maxillary glands swollen."

"Tongue thickly coated on back; coated yellow and dry."

This is found in all acute complaints and is like Mercury. Phytolacca holds a reputation among the Eclectics, and in their results we see a shadow of its homeopathic action. In Cincinnati they used three drops in a tumbler of water and gave it for ulcers in the mouth. It was a standard remedy with them and they made some homoeopathic cures.

"Ulcerated sore mouth."

Syphilitic ulcers find a curative remedy in Phytolacca, when the symptoms agree.

Throat

There are several pages in the Guiding Symptoms showing homeopathic cures of the throat; diphtheria; sore throat; inflamed glands; aching bones worse at night, violent cases, with difficult swallowing, pains in the tonsils; enlarged tonsils; tendency to slough. Syphilitic and mercurial sore throats. The sore throats are often aggravated from warm drinks; he wants cool things; and there is an aggravation at night.

Here is a summary:

"Diphtheria; sick and dizzy when trying to sit up; frontal headache; pains shooting from throat into ears, especially on trying to swallow; face flushed; tongue much coated, protruded; thickly coated at back, fiery red at tip; breath foetid; putrid; vomiting; difficulty of swallowing; tonsils swollen, covered with membrane, first upon left; three or four patches; tonsils, uvula and back part of throat covered with ash-colored exudation. Pain in the root 'of the tongue on putting out."

Pains

Old gout and rheumatism of the limbs; in acute rheumatism which is prolonged, worse at night, worse from the warmth of the bed, worse from warm applications.

Gouty rheumatism; syphilitic cases; pains as if in the bones.

"Sharp cutting pains in hip, drawing; legs drawn up; cannot touch floor."

"Syphilitic or gonorrheal sciatica, etc."

"Ulcers and nodes on the legs."

A certain class of physicians used to call Podophyllum "vegetable Mercury."

Phytolacca ought to be called "vegetable Mercury " because it is so full of symptoms analogous to Mercury.
