General

This salt leads all other remedies in tenesmus of the rectum, which is incessant, and is not relieved by the stool. The tenesmus often involves the bladder as well. Bright's disease. Gonorrhœa; second stage, with continuous tenesmus. Destroys the secreting portions of the kidneys. This process is slow, but sure. Albuminuria in early pregnancy (Phosph later and at full term).

Head

Delirium, stupor. Frontal pain, congestion of head with burning in cheeks. Drawing pain in periosteum of skull.

Eyes

Pain behind eyeballs, as if forced out. Phlyctenulæ; deep ulcers on cornea. Excessive photophobia and acrid lachrymation. Iritis, ordinary or syphilitic (Give in association with atropin locally for prevention of adhesions). Pain severe at night; burning, shooting, tearing. Little tendency to pus formation. Iris muddy in color, thick, and neither contracts nor dilates. Retinitis albuminuric, ophthalmia neonatorum. Lids œdematous, red, excoriated. Severe burning. Soreness of the eyes.

Nose

Excessive coryza. Ozæna, with perforation of septum nasi (Kali bich). Rawness and smarting in nostrils. Post-nasal swelling, mucous membrane dry, red, and covered with bloody mucus.

Ears

Violent pulsations. Fetid pus.

Face

Swollen. Red, puffy. Lips black, swollen. Sordes. Facial neuralgia within the bones.

Mouth

Teeth loose. Gums purple, swollen, and spongy. Tongue swollen and inflamed. Salivation. Pyorrhea. Ptyalism. Taste salty and bitter.

Throat

Red, swollen, painful, intensely inflamed. Uvula swollen. Swallowing painful. Most pain in post-nasal with sharp pains to ears. Burning pain, with great swelling; worse, slight external pressure. All glands about thorax swollen.

Stomach

Incessant, green, bilious vomiting. Epigastrium very sensitive.

Abdomen

Respiratory

Relationship

Compare: Ars; Lach; Leonurus-Mother-wort (Influences pelvic organs, allays spasm and nervous irritability, promotes secretion and reduces febrile excitement. Valuable in suppressed menses and lochia; dysentery; vomiting, frightful pains in abdomen, violent thirst. Tongue dry and cracked). Monsonia--An African plant belonging to the Geraniaceæ--(Used for dysentery in material doses).

Antidote: Calcium sulphide is antidotal to Bichloride poisoning. Use intravenous injection of 7 1/2 grains in 7 1/2 ozs boiled water.

Dose

Sixth potency. In solution 1:1000, hypodermically injected under conjunctiva in choroditis with progressive myopia. Stops immediately the severe aching pain behind eye-balls (Dr. G. D. Hallet).

Leaders

Most persistent and terrible tenesmus before, during and after stool; stool scanty, mucus tinged with blood.

Tenesmus of the bladder and rectum at the same time; urine passed in drops with much pain.

Throat intensely inflamed, swollen, burning, with swollen gums, which bleed easily.

While we are on the subject of mercury we may as well notice the various combinations of the drug. Mercurius solubilis and vivus are so nearly alike that with the same indications some use one and some the other preparation. It is claimed by some that the vivus is better adapted to men and solubilis to women. I have not observed it, but do think that the solubilis works better in skin troubles. Of Mercurius corrosivus we have to say that it leads all other remedies for tenesmus of the rectum. This tenesmus is incessant. Stool does not relieve it, and this is what decides between it and Nux vomica in dysentery. It has also severe tenesmus of the bladder, and may here vie with Cantharis, Capsicum and Nux vomica, especially in dysentery.

Other symptoms must decide the choice.

This severe tenesmus may begin in the rectum and extend to the bladder or vice versa.

It is a very efficient remedy in gonorrhœa, in the second stage, when the greenish discharge has set in and the burning and tenesmus continues. It seems to have gained some reputation in Bright's disease. I have no experience with it here, but would expect it to do good if it were indicated.

It seems, according to the testimony of others, to be a useful remedy for catarrhal affections of the eyes and nose. Here also I have no testimony to offer, but would not cast doubt upon it for that reason. I do not desire to place my own experience ahead of that of others. We are co-laborers. Let each add to the general store of medical knowledge, that all may draw freely from it as occasion demands.

Mind and Disposition

Anxiety, preventing sleep. Weakness of the intellect ; he stares at persons who talk to him, and does not understand them.

Head

Vertigo, with coldness, cold perspiration ; with deafness, when stooping. Heaviness of the head. Stitches in the forehead. Swelling of the head and neck.

Eyes

Burning and dryness of the eyes. Inflammation of the eyes, the pain is pressing, burning, the pupils lose their roundness, are angular, the eyes feel too small. The eye sparkling, very movable ; pupils contracted, with red face. Pupils contracted and insensible. Objects appear smaller. Double, vision.

Ears

Inflammation with stitches in the ear. Discharge of fetid pus from the ear.

Nose

Swelling and redness of the nose. Fluent coryza, loss of smell. Ozæna, discharge from the nose like glue, drying up in the posterior nares, perforation of the septum.

Face

Face and cheeks swollen, hard, red, bloated. Paleness of the distorted face. Œdematous swelling of the face. Yellow color of the face. The face is covered with cold perspiration.

Mouth and Throat

Swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat. Swelling and turning up of the upper lip ; dark-red, swollen lip. The lips and tongue are whitish and contracted. Tongue coated with thick white mucus, or dry and red ; papillæ elevated like a strawberry ; coated white and swollen, and stiff. Looseness of the teeth ; they pain, they fall out. The gums swell, are covered with a false membrane, become gangrenous and bleed freely. Mouth dry with unquenchable thirst. Lymphatic exudations on the membranes in the mouth extending to the tonsils. Ulcers (phagædenic) in the mouth, or the gums and throat, with fetid breath. Burning in the mouth and gums. Ptyalism with salty taste ; bloody, yellowish, tough, acrid. Painful burning in the mouth extending to the stomach. Discharge of albuminous mucus from the mouth. Swelling of the tongue with ptyalism. Pricking in the throat as from needles. Tonsils swollen and covered with ulcers. Swelling of the throat, to suffocation, inability to swallow any fluid, with heat in the mouth, tongue and throat. Pharynx dark red, painful to contact. When he makes the effort to swallow, retching and vomiting. Taste in the mouth, metallic or salty.

Stomach and Abdomen

Burning, from the pit of the stomach to the mouth ; in the stomach. Swelling, distension of the pit of the stomach not permitting the least touch. Vomiting, of albuminous matter ; of tough mucus ; of blood ; of stringy mucus, of green bitter substances like coffee grounds, with coagulated blood ; of bile ; of pus. Stitches as if in the middle of the liver. Bloated abdomen, very painful to the least touch. Cutting below the navel. Bruised pain in the abdomen.

Stool and Anus

Diarrhœa, yellow, green, bilious, bloody, of mucus, of feces with mucus and dark clotted blood. Burning in the rectum. Painful, almost unsuccessful pressing, straining and tenesmus, with almost insupportable cutting pain in the abdomen, and discharge of small quantities of bloody mucus. Tenesmus with dysenteric discharges, vomiting of bile, cramps in the calves, and stitches in the side. Painful bloody discharges ; with vomiting. Dysentery.

Urinary Organs

Tenesmus of the bladder ; suppressed urine. Increased discharge of urine. The urine is only passed in drops, and with great pain. Urine scanty, brown, with brick-dust sediment. Itching in the forepart of the urethra. Gonorrhœic discharges, first thin, then thicker, and then smarting pain when urinating, with stitches in the urethra. Burning in the urethra, more before micturition. Paraphymosis.

Sexual Organs

Men. Violent erections during sleep. Fine, painful stinging in the left testicle. Women. Menses too early and too profuse. Fluor albus, Smelling sweetish, pale-yellow.

Respiratory Organs

Hoarseness ; aphonia. Burning and stinging in the trachea, with loss of voice. Respiration slow, interrupted sighing. Constriction of the chest, breathes with the pectoral muscles. Oppression of the chest. Stitches in the chest, through the thorax (right lower side). Hæmoptysis.

Extremities

Coldness in the extremities, they look purple, with small, spasmodic frequent pulse. Upper. Rheumatic pains in the left shoulder and shoulder-blade. The deltoid muscle feels relaxed. The whole arm up to the shoulder in much swollen, red and covered with vesicles. Lower. Stitches in the right hip-joint. Sensation as if the legs had gone to sleep. The muscles of the thigh and calf feel relaxed. Cramps in the calves. The feet are icy cold.

Generalities

Drawing in the periosteum, with heat in the head. Inflammation of the lymphatic vessels. Twitches, convulsive contractions. Convulsive twitchings of the muscles of the face, arms, and legs, and convulsions of the limbs. Trembling. Paralysis of the upper and lower extremities.

Sleep

During sleep, violent hiccough. Somnolence. When trying to go to sleep violent starts. Sleeplessness on account of vertigo ; on account of anxiety.

Fever

Pulse small, weak, intermitting, sometimes trembling. Chilliness from the least movement and in the open air, generally with colic. Chilliness in the evening, especially on the head. Chilliness at night in bed. External heat with yellowness of the skin. Burning and stinging heat in the skin. Heat when stooping, and coldness when rising. Night-sweat. Towards morning the perspiration becomes fetid. Cold perspiration, often only on the forehead. The whole skin is covered with cold perspiration with anxiety.

Skin

Painful drawing in the periosteum, as if a chill would set in. Inflammation of the periosteum (lower jaw). Necrosis of the upper jaw. Burning and redness of the skin, with the formation of small vesicles. Swelling of the glands (neck, bubœs). Gray color of the nails.

Conditions

Aggravation in the evening and at night.

Characteristics

The chief effect of the Chlorine element in this salt appears to be to intensify the mercurial action. Mer c. cor . is Merc. viv . with a much greater rapidity of action. Phagedena is the type of Merc. cor . ulceration. Chancres spread with great rapidity. The burning of Merc. cor . is more intense. The dysenteric straining is more excessive. For this reason Merc. cor . is more generally prescribed In dysentery than Merc. viv ., and it has even become a recognised remedy in the old school. As with other ulcerating remedies, Merc. cor . is a powerful disinfectant. Being much less irritating than Carbolic acid , it has taken the place of the latter as the leading antiseptic. Before the proper degree of dilution had been ascertained many patients were poisoned by its external use. Merc. cor . has some of its most characteristic symptoms in the urinary sphere. The urine is albuminous, scanty, hot, bloody; may be retained or suppressed. There is intense vesical tenesmus. In some of the poisoning cases the bladder was found after death firmly contracted into a small hard lump. "Tenesmus vesicæ, with intense burning in urethra and discharge of mucus and blood with the urine or after it," is a keynote for Merc. cor . When this accompanies dysentery Merc. cor . is the remedy. In such cases the rectal and vesical tenesmus will go together. A patient of mine who had had under allopathic treatment an injection of a solution of Merc. cor . (gr. vi to two ounces) injected into his urethra for gonorrhœa, not only suffered intensely in the urethra at the time, but for years afterwards had a painful spasm of the rectum every time he had coitus. The tenesmus is < (or at any rate not > ) after stool. This is the note of Merc. cor . In the diarrhœa calling for Merc. cor . there is the "never-get-done feeling" long after all has passed that there is to come. This is also the indication in intussusception. Membranous threads in stool; much pure blood; weakness, faintness, shuddering. Merc. cor . is a true gonorrhœa remedy, but local injections of it are not the right form of administration. The indications are: Greenish-yellow, or bloody, watery discharge, with violent burning, urging, and painful erections; dark purplish swelling; glans has a dark red or gangrenous appearance; phimosis or paraphimosis. The chancres of Merc. cor . spread with great rapidity. Serpigenous ulcers; ulcers with ragged edges which will eat away half the penis in a few days. The sore throat of Merc. cor . is also characterised by the rapid spread of the affection and by the intensity of the burning pains. The mouth is specifically affected. There is one useful bit of practice in this connection which I learned from Dr. McKechnie. Long uvulas sometimes give rise to irritating coughs. If to the uvula is applied on a brush a little of a low trituration of Merc. cor . it will in many cases immediately, and often permanently, relieve the trouble. In syphilitic eye affections Merc. cor . is a leading remedy. The inflammatory symptoms are of the most violent character. Burning, agonising pains with excessive photophobia causing excoriation of cheeks. Tearing pains in bones and around eyes. Scrofulous no less than syphilitic ophthalmias with these characters yield to Merc. cor . Near to the eyes are the superior maxillary bones and their antra. These are affected by Merc. cor . The nasal catarrh is thick and glue-like; acrid excoriating. The gullet is very markedly affected. Constriction is a leading note of the remedy. Any attempt to swallow (solid or liquid) causes violent spasm and immediate ejection. Cutting as from a knife in throat. There is raging thirst for cold things. Desire for cold food and intolerance of hot things. Skin affections of many kinds are met by Merc. cor ., including syphilitic roseola and small-pox and condylomata. In addition to the upper jaw and cranium, the sternum, ribs, and tibiæ are prominently affected. When present in cases of enteric fever, pains in the tibiæ may form an indication for Merc. cor . along with the symptoms of intestinal ulceration; also affections of the tibiæ occurring as sequelæ of enteric. Like Merc. viv., Merc. cor . has a distinct place in rheumatism and rheumatic fever. ─ A case of poisoning by Merc. cor . is quoted from Eisenhardt in Brit. Med. Jour ., July 18, 189l. A woman, 37, drank a tumblerful of tepid water in which a 5 per cent. sublimate pastille had been dissolved. Immediately she felt nausea, faintness; knees so weak she could not crawl into bed. Directly she was put to bed violent choking sensation set in, and she vomited bile-stained mucus. In an hour and a half, when Eisenhardt saw her, the symptoms were intensified, and in addition there were: General trembling movements, especially in upper part of body. Unable to speak; she indicated by signs pain in stomach, pharynx, and head. Pulse rapid, soft. Temperature subnormal. Pupils contracted. She had taken (with great difficulty) a quart of milk. Whites of eggs were also given, and later oil of Camphor and hypodermic injections of Morphine . There was temporary suppression of urine, but the kidneys acted in twenty-four hours. Tea and black coffee favoured diuresis but were quickly vomited. The vomiting gradually ceased. On the third day profuse salivation set in, and ulcerating stomatitis with bloody and slimy stools and scanty and occasionally albuminous urine. Emaciation; falling out of hair; failure of sight. In a fortnight she could stand, and was convalescent in a month. Unna reports two cases, in elderly women, of poisoning by sublimate lotion, lint, and gauze after ablation of the breast. The dressings were removed the second day in each case. The first symptoms were intense irritation of the skin and diffused redness of the part. The wounds failed to heal by first intention. Widespread dermatitis followed, and in the course of a few days a diffuse erythema spread over the whole body, creeping onwards like "water on blotting paper." Some fever, general malaise, nausea, restlessness. In one case the eruption lasted three weeks and changed its type; "scattered urticarial and erythematous itching spots on all parts of the body suggested that there was at that period a poisoning of the more central nervous system" (Calcott Fox quoted in Brit. Med. Jour ., December 13, 1890). R. C. Markham ( Med. Adv ., xxi. 524) records a cure with Merc. cor . after the failure of Merc. viv . in a case of dysentery. The symptoms were: ( 1 ) Stool: bloody mucus. ( 2 ) Tenesmus after stool. ( 3 ) Cutting colic below umbilicus. ( 4 ) Nausea. ( 5 ) Perspiration before and after stool, most pronounced on lower part of body and thigh. Symptoms 3 and 5 were not found under Merc. viv ., but were under Merc. cor . The patient felt better within ten minutes of receiving a dose of Merc. cor . 1m. (I give the case, as it is a striking one, but I am unable to find the indications he names under Merc. cor . in Bell's work on Diarrhœa , from which Markham says he obtained them. My editions are third and fourth.) The Conditions of Merc. cor . are in the main those of Merc . Motion > pain in hip-joints. < By coitus. Dysentery and summer complaints from May to November. Notable Concomitants are: Vesical tenesmus and tibial pains. According to Teste, Merc. cor . is suited to males, and Merc. sol . to females. Merc. cor . will act in men on indications for Merc. sol . He lays this down as a positive law, and without going into the details of experience on which it is based, he mentions this as a "curious fact": Both Merc. cor . and Merc. sol . antidote Sepia , which antidotes them in turn but imperfectly. But " this neutralisation of Merc. cor. by Sepia, and vice versâ, does not take place thoroughly except in the case of males, nor does the neutralisation of Merc. sol. by Sepia, and vice versâ, take place thoroughly except in females ."

Ears

Inflammation with stitches in ear. ─ Discharge of fetid pus from ear. ─ Violent pulsation in ears, < l. ─ In afternoon burrowing and lancinations in l. ear so violent he involuntarily weeps and cries for three minutes; later no traces of it.

Nose

Swelling and redness of nose. ─ Fluent coryza, loss of smell; rawness and smarting in nostrils. ─ Frequent nose-bleed. ─ Ozæna, discharge from nose like glue, drying up in posterior nares; perforation of septum.

Face

Face and cheeks swollen, hard, bright red, puffy, bloated. ─ Distortion of features; paleness of distorted face. ─ Tearing in l. zygoma. ─ Tearing in upper jaw, in antrum, towards eye, followed by swelling. ─ Intense prosopalgia darting along jaws > by day < night; < 4 to 10 p.m. ─ countenance pale; anxious, as if exhausted. ─ Œdematous swelling of face; paleness; albuminuria. ─ Yellow colour of face. ─ Face covered with cold perspiration. ─ Lips black; dark-red swollen lip; lips excessively swollen and tender; dry and cracked; incrusted with a dry secretion. ─ Swelling and turning up of upper lip. ─ Stiffness of jaws; soreness.

Teeth

Looseness of teeth; they pain; fall out. ─ Sordes. ─ Soreness in teeth and gums aching at night. ─ Gums swollen and spongy; bleed easily; detached from teeth; ulcerated. ─ Gums are covered with a false membrane and become gangrenous.

Mouth

Lips and tongue whitish and contracted. ─ Tongue coated with thick white mucus, or dry and red; papillæ elevated like a strawberry; coated white and swollen and stiff. ─ Tongue excessively swollen and inflamed; red with black coat; covered with a greyish white crust; moist edges, red; pale dirty yellow posteriorly and edges. ─ Swelling of lips, mouth, tongue, and throat. ─ Mouth dry with unquenchable thirst. ─ Mouth inflamed; dry, burning, and parched, as if scalded. ─ Burning in mouth and gums. ─ Fetid breath. ─ Exudations and ulcers on mucous membranes of mouth and throat. ─ Ptyalism with salty (or very bitter) taste; bloody, yellowish, tough, acrid. ─ Accumulation of tenacious saliva, expectorated with difficulty. ─ Painful burning in mouth extending to stomach. ─ Discharge of albuminous mucus from mouth. ─ Swelling of tongue with ptyalism. ─ Swallowing not so painful as depressing the tongue.

Throat

Pricking in throat as from needles. ─ Tonsils swollen and covered with ulcers. ─ Swelling of throat to suffocation, inability to swallow any fluid, with heat in mouth, tongue, and throat. ─ Violent burning, raw, stinging, smarting pain in throat and œsophagus, < by slightest external pressure. ─ Pharynx dark red, painful to contact. ─ Dryness of fauces. ─ Uvula swollen, elongated, dark red. ─ External throat and glands of throat enormously swollen. ─ When he makes the effort to swallow, retching and vomiting. ─ Spasms of œsophagus and stomach on attempting to swallow a drop of liquid. ─ Burning in œsophagus. ─ Taste in mouth, metallic or salty.

Stomach

Burning from pit of stomach to mouth; in stomach. ─ Swelling, distension of pit of stomach, not permitting the least touch. ─ Violent unquenchable thirst for cold water. ─ Repugnance to hot food, desire for cold. ─ Drink frequently regurgitates through nose. ─ Painful retching and vomiting. ─ Vomiting of albuminous matter; of tough mucus; of blood; streaks of blood in the matter vomited; vomiting of stringy mucus, of green bitter substances like coffee-grounds, with coagulated blood; of bile; incessant green bilious vomiting; of pus.

Abdomen

Pains in liver and r. shoulder. ─ Stitches as if in middle of liver. ─ Bloated abdomen, painful; very painful to least touch. ─ Cutting below navel. ─ Bruised pain in abdomen, esp. in cæcal region and over transverse colon. ─ Pressive pain in inguinal glands. ─ Lancinating drawing in l. inguinal region.

Stool and Anus

Diarrhœa; yellow, green, bilious, bloody; with membranous shreds; of fæces with mucus and dark clotted blood. ─ Burning in rectum and anus; during stool. ─ Fæces loose, with bilious and fetid evacuations, green or brown, or composed of thin and sanguineous mucus, accompanied by almost incessant cuttings in abdomen and discharge of small quantities of bloody mucus; almost unsuccessful pressing, straining and tenesmus. ─ Ineffectual want to evacuate. ─ Tenesmus with dysenteric discharges, vomiting of bile, cramps in calves, and stitches in side. ─ (Spasm of rectum after coitus.). ─ Painful bloody discharges; with vomiting. ─ Dysentery. ─ Corrosive ichor oozes from anus, excoriating the parts. ─ Itching about anus (while walking). ─ Very persistent distressing tenesmus and cutting colicky pains; after stool burning and tenesmus of rectum and bladder; stools hot, frequent, scanty, nothing but mucus tinged with blood. ─ Stool pasty, dark green, bilious, blackish, offensive. ─ Constipation; tenacious fæces.

Urinary Organs

Tenesmus of bladder; suppressed urine. ─ Increased discharge of urine. ─ The urine is only passed in drops, and with great pain. ─ Urine scanty, brown, with brick-dust sediment; bloody; albuminous containing filaments, flocks or dark flesh-like pieces of mucus, epithelial cells of tubuli uriniferi in a state of fatty degeneration. ─ Gonorrhœic discharges, first thin, then thicker (greenish, < at night), and then smarting pain when urinating, with stitches in urethra. ─ Burning in urethra, more before micturition. ─ Paraphimosis.

Male Sexual Organs

Violent erections during sleep. ─ Fine, painful stinging in l. testicle. ─ Penis and testes enormously swollen. ─ Chancres assuming a phagedenic appearance, and secreting a thin, ichorous pus.

Female Sexual Organs

Menses too early and too profuse. ─ Leucorrhœa of a yellowish white, with sweetish, nauseous smell. ─ Intense inflammation of the vulva. ─ Painful glandular swellings about nipple. ─ Nipples crack and bleed; severe pain when attempting to nurse.

Respiratory Organs

Hoarseness; aphonia. ─ Burning, cutting, and stinging in trachea, with loss of voice. ─ Respiration slow, interrupted, sighing. ─ Difficult respiration. ─ Spasm of glottis when swallowing. ─ Hollow, dry, shaking cough. ─ Cough, with expectoration of mucus tinged with blood.

Chest

Constriction of chest, breathes with pectoral muscles. ─ Oppression of chest. ─ Stitches in chest, through thorax (r. lower side). ─ Nocturnal shootings across chest. ─ Hæmoptysis.

Pulse

Pain in precordial region. ─ Palpitation of heart in sleep. ─ Pulse: small, intermittent, irregular; rapid.

Neck and Back

Pains in head, back, and limbs; kidneys affected. ─ Glands of neck hard and swollen. ─ Pott's disease; lies on back with legs drawn up. ─ Tonic cramps; tension in l. scapula; tearing.

Limbs

Coldness in extremities, they look purple, with small, spasmodic, frequent pulse. ─ Rheumatic pains after gonorrhœa suppressed by Copaiva . ─ Paralysis in all limbs; trembling.

Upper Limbs

Rheumatic pains in l. shoulder and shoulder-blade. ─ Sensation in l. axillary glands as if they would swell up; frequent lancinations. ─ Deltoid muscle feels relaxed. ─ Whole arm up to shoulder is much swollen, red, and covered with vesicles.

Lower Limbs

Pains in lower limbs as from pin-pricks. ─ Stitches in hip-joint, > on motion. ─ Stitches in r. hip-joint. ─ Shootings in coxo-femoral joint, during repose and movement. ─ Myalgia of thigh muscles. ─ Pain in tibiæ. ─ Sensation as if legs had gone to sleep. ─ The muscles of thigh and calf feel relaxed. ─ Cramps in calves. ─ The feet are icy cold.

Generalities

Painful drawings in periosteum (like those which precede an intermittent fever) with heat in head. ─ Periostitis (upper and lower jaws). ─ Inflammation of lymphatic vessels. ─ Twitches, convulsive contractions. ─ Convulsive twitchings of muscles of face, arms, and legs, and convulsions of limbs. ─ Violent starts, with shaking of whole body, on going to sleep. ─ Trembling. ─ Paralysis of upper and lower extremities. ─ Glandular swellings. ─ Lies on back with knees bent up. ─ Great debility. ─ General anasarca. ─ Feeling of coldness, esp. of head. ─ Shivering, provoked by slightest exercise, and also by open air (even when weather is warm), sometimes with cutting pains and tenesmus. ─ Heat on stooping, and feeling of relief on raising the body again.

Sleep

Fever

Numerous, bright red, rather fine, injected bloodvessels, proceeding from larger trunks in conjunctiva sclerotica, run from conjunctiva bulbi over edge of cornea, in a very slightly tortuous course, and there divide into numerous branches, without forming many anastomoses, their
disposition is arborescent ; the finer vessels, without communicating much with each other, gradually decrease in calibre and are lost imperceptibly almost in centre of cornea, or in vicinity of small ulcers that are generally seated about centre of cornea. θ Erithistic
scrofulous ophthalmia.
Scrofulous inflammation of eyes, erethistic form ; lids red, greatly swollen and spasmodically closed ; great photophobia, child sits in a dark corner of room, or covers eyes tightly with hand or walks about with eyes closed and head sunk upon breast ; on attempting to
open eyes hot tears gush from them, causing redness, rawness and a pustular eruption on surrounding parts ; intense redness of conjunctiva, palpebral and bulbar ; on latter bundles of vessels run towards cornea and pass over edge which looks dim.
Burning in eyes.
Chronic catarrhal conjunctivitis, tending towards trachoma, with redness and excoriation of lids and a dull feeling, with itching in eyes in evening.
Blepharitis scrofulosa ; margins of lids red and raw, with crusts and ulcers upon lids ; tendency towards formation of ecor entropium.
Indurated lids ; secretion thin and excoriating ; nocturnal aggravation.
Lids : œdematous or erysipelatous ; red, excoriated ; edges swollen, burning, smarting ; edges covered with thick crusts or pustules ; spasmodically closed.
Since childhood, twenty years ago, after abuse of calomel, highly inflamed lids, very much thickened and infiltrated ; ciliæ matted in bunches along upper and lower margins ; profuse lachrymation of a muco-purulent nature ; surrounding integument excoriated, presenting
appearance as if burned ; intolerable burning, conjunctivæ, both palpebral and ocular portion, much injected, the former presenting a rough, granular appearance ; vision more or less impaired, objects look dim, as if enveloped in a halo or mist, eyeballs feel tense, sensitive to
both light and pressure ; yearly attacks. θ Ophthalmia tarsi.

Hearing and ears

Violent pulsation in ears, especially in left.
Inflammation, with stitches in ear.
Discharge of fetid pus from ear.

Smell and nose

Frequent nosebleed.
Swelling and redness of nose ; frequently sore nostrils.
Excessive fluent coryza ; loss of smell.
Nose feels stopped up, at same time runs ; rawness, smarting in nostrils.
Nose sore and stuffed up with gluey secretion.
Ozæna, discharge from nose like glue, drying up in posterior nares ; perforation of septum.
Scrofulous ozæna ; poorly nourished subjects.

Upper face

Yellow color of face ; countenance denoting exhaustion ; paleness of distorted face.
Face : flushed and puffy, or pale and anxious, with pinched features ; much swollen ; puffy and bright red.
Swelling and turning up of upper lip ; dark red.
Face and cheeks swollen, hard, red, bloated.
Œdematous swelling of face, paleness ; albuminuria.
Pain in side of face, darting along upper jaw, gums and roots of teeth ; so intense as to impair general health and to compel her to remain in bed ; face somewhat swollen ; considerable tenderness on pressure over superior maxilla. θ Prosapalgia.
Severe pain in left side of face, darting along both jaws and upward to temple ; pain remits during day, < about 9 P. M.
Severe pain in face and side of neck, commencing at 4 P. M. and continuing all night until daybreak ; pain gradually < until intolerable, her night's rest is completely destroyed, has to get out of bed and walk about in agony ; pain shoots over face, is intense below malar
bone and zygomatic arch, darts along gums and down neck from ear ; some swelling of face.
For three weeks almost constant pain in right side of face, affecting chiefly upper and lower jaw, extending forward to middle line ; pain abates, never entirely subsides, < from 4 till 10 P. M., after which it gradually > ; pulse 80, weak ; tongue coated with a creamy
fur ; breath very offensive.

Lower face

Stiffness of jaws, and soreness.
Lips : dry, cracked, black ; swollen and incrusted with a dry secretion ; excessively swollen and tender.
Lower lip considerably swollen and a small blister inside of it.
Submaxillary glands enlarged ; tender.

Teeth and gums

Looseness of teeth ; they pain and drop out.
Sleep at night disturbed by toothache with anxious sensation.
Toothache with swelling of gums.
Much sordes about teeth.
Gums red and tender, with some swelling of glands beneath jaw.
Gums : swollen, pale and spongy ; ulcerated ; bleed easily ; covered with false membrane ; gangrenous ; purple ; red and detached from teeth.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste : bitter ; slimy ; salty ; putrid in morning ; astringent metallic.
Tongue : could not be protruded ; red, with blackish coat ; coated, moist, edges red ; posteriorly pale, dirty yellow, rather thick, coating extending forward along sides ; covered with a greyish white crust ; white and so much swollen that he could not
protrude it ; white in forepart, posteriorly yellow ; swollen, pale yellow, protruding from lips, which are swollen ; very much swollen and extremely inflamed ; coated with thick white mucus, or dry and red ; papillæ elevated, strawberry-like ; stiff ; and
lips whitish, contracted.

Inner mouth

Sensation as if mouth was scalded ; burning extending to stomach.
Mouth dry, with unquenchable thirst.
Salivary glands very much swollen.
Ptyalism, with salty taste ; saliva bloody, yellowish, tough, acrid.
Discharge of albuminous mucus from mouth.
Soreness of mouth and fauces.
Inflammation of mouth and gums, with constant discharge of clear water.
Buccal cavity and lips covered with aphthæ ; on lips they are surrounded by vesicles which burn.
Mouth terribly swollen ; lips swollen and everted ; ptyalism. θ Aphthæ.
Ulcers (phagedenic) in mouth, throat or on gums, with fetid breath.

Palate and throat

Pillars of velum palati swollen and dark red.
Uvula swollen, elongated and dark red.
Inflammatory swelling of uvula to size of half a finger, lying upon tongue and making swallowing very painful and difficult.
In tonsillary folds, on edges of pillars, soft greyish excrescences like sloughs or false membranes.
Tonsils swollen and covered with ulcers.
Greyish yellow ulcers as large as a pea on left nostril, sensitive to touch.
Sense of dryness in fauces.
Inflammation of fauces from taking cold after a bath ; uvula much enlarged ; entire fauces dark red, < on right side ; no swelling of tonsils.
Swallowing attended with a violent spasm of glottis.
Act of swallowing even fluids produces great pain.
Retching and vomiting on attempting to swallow.

Vomiting : of green, bilious matter ; incessant ; streaks of blood in matter vomited ; of albuminous matter ; of tough or stringy mucus ; of green, bitter substances ; of bile ; of blood ; like coffee grounds with coagulated blood ; of

Drink regurgitates through nose.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Distension and soreness of pit of stomach, not permitting least touch, even of clothing.
Burning gnawing, darting pains in stomach.
Cramp in stomach and vomiting, after eating rye bread.
Distension and soreness of epigastrium, after eating rye bread.
Distension and soreness of epigastrium, cannot bear clothing tight or even close around waist, because it causes both oppression of breathing and pain ; constipation ; pain and distension in colon, especially transverse portion. θ Chronic

Hypochondria

Pain in liver and right shoulder, with frequent nausea and obstinate chronic constipation ; jaundiced.
Stitches : in hepatic region ; as if in middle of liver.

Abdomen and loins

Abdomen swollen, hard and sensitive to pressure, especially about umbilicus.
Cutting below navel.
Bloated abdomen, very painful to least touch.
Peculiar bruised sensation in abdomen, especially in cecal region and following course of transverse colon ; painful to moderate pressure, as though bruised.
Intolerable cutting pains in abdomen and constant urging to stool, followed by slight discharge of blood and mucus ; despondent, walks up and down.

Stools and rectum

Stools : hot, scanty, frequent ; bloody ; slimy ; containing shreds of mucous membrane ; offensive ; yellow, green bilious followed by slime and blood ; with tenesmus and insupportable cutting colicky pains ; pasty,
dark green, blackish, offensive ; tenacious ; < in Fall ; < after midnight.
Frequent ineffectual urging to stool, violent pain.
Painful bloody discharges with vomiting.
During stool : burning in anus.
Before, during and after stool : urging and tenesmus ; cutting colic.
Tenesmus, persistent, incessant.
After catching cold, lassitude in limbs, pains in abdomen in evening, continuing throughout night ; thin, watery discharges of red color, as if purely of blood ; stools especially copious at night and accompanied by pain, preventing sleep ;
very slight fever ; no thirst ; must lie in bed. θ Diarrhœa.
Diarrhœa, with pain in abdomen and prolapsus ani ; evacuations of mucus and undigested food ; bleeding from prolapsed anus, blood escaping in drops ; itching of skin with bleeding after scratching ; eruption of vesicles and pustules.

Severe dysentery brought on by a draught of foul, cold water, when much heated ; straining almost continuous, pain in bowels severe, evacuations of mucus and blood every quarter of an hour ; extreme prostration, with clean tongue and some appetite.

Urine : scanty or increased ; hot ; burning ; bloody ; passed in drops with great pain ; scanty, brown, with brick dust sediment ; pale and copious ; containing filaments, flocks or flesh-like pieces of mucus ; albuminous, abundantly
coagulated by heat as well as by nitric acid ; under microscope presented granular fatty tubuli in large numbers showing on their surface epithelial cells of tubuli uriniferi, also in a state of granular fatty degeneration ; no longer limpid, rather thick, but acid as before, sp.

Chronic balanitis ; greasy, fatty, offensive smelling discharge ; several excoriated places on corona, repeatedly healing and then becoming sore again.
Gonorrhœa : greenish, < at night ; burning, smarting on urination ; at first thin, afterwards thick ; biting pain on urinating ; stitches extending back through urethra ; suppuration between glans and prepuce ; glans
feels hot, painful when touched ; burning, itching, stinging and throbbing in urethra ; urine passes in feeble stream ; discharge acrid, excoriating ; mild ulceration about glans, prepuce or within meatus ; throbbing in urethra.
Chancre : on inner surface of preputium or on corona glandis ; margin of soft chancre dark red, painful and easily bleeding ; neighboring parts œdematous, hot and painful ; thin pus stains linen, like melted tallow ; assumes a
phagedenic appearance and secretes a thin ichorous pus ; ichor adhering to bottom of ulcer ; indurated Hunterian, with lardaceous bottom.

Female sexual organs

Fibroid tumors, with profuse, muco-purulent, excoriating leucorrhœa.
Aching pain, succeeding pressing or touching os uteri during an embrace.
Abrasion, ulceration arising from overstimulated, then broken down glandular structure. θ Disease of uterus.
Menses too early and too profuse.
Leucorrhœa : pale, yellow ; smelling sweetish ; tinged with blood ; mucous discharge as thin as water.
Burning heat and pain in genitals.
Intense inflammation of vulva.
Primary, phagedenic syphilitic ulcers, with profuse and bad suppuration.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

Nipples crack, bleed ; severe pain when attempting to nurse.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Hoarseness quickly changing with normal voice.
Hoarseness or aphonia ; burning and stinging in trachea ; tightness across chest.
Larynx and epiglottis pain when swallowing food ; pain < when depressing tongue ; cutting in throat as from a knife.
Broad condylomata in larynx, nearly closing glottis ; hoarseness and dyspnœa (assisted by Nitr. ac.). θ Syphilis.

Respiration

Respiration very difficult ; slow ; interrupted, sighing ; palpitation.

Cough

Emaciation with hectic fever, accompanied by a phthisical condition ; severe, short cough, at times with expectoration and gagging ; cough affects him very much and threatens to rob him of his remaining strength.
Coughs up considerable amount of mucus tinged with blood.

Inner chest and lungs

Shooting pains in chest.
Frequent stitches shoot through thorax.
Sticking in upper part of right side of chest deep internally, scarcely < by deep inspiration.
Sticking pain in lower portion of right side of chest.
Great oppression of chest ; attacks of dyspnœa ; difficult, sobbing, sighing respiration ; hoarse voice ; hollow ; deep cough without expectoration, owing to weakness of lungs ; cough asthmatic, < talking, with white,

Pain in precordial region.
Heart sounds dull and intermittent ; tremulous undulating motion of heart ; precordial anxiety.
Palpitation of heart in sleep.
Pulse : intermittent, 89 ; small, intermittent ; irregular, intermittent ; intermittent and uneven ; small, weak, intermittent, sometimes trembling.

Outer chest

Painful glandular swellings about nipple.

Neck and back

Pains in head, back and limbs ; kidneys affected.
Glands of neck hard and swollen.
Dorsal decubitus.
Lies on back with knees drawn up ; Pott's disease.

Upper limbs

Arm much swollen up to shoulder, red and covered with vesicles.
Rheumatic pains in left shoulder and shoulder blade.
Deltoid muscle feels relaxed.

Lower limbs

Lower extremities drawn up in bed.
Sticking pains in hip joints during rest, > in motion.
Stitches in right hip joint.
Sensation as if legs had gone to sleep.
Muscles of thigh and calf feel relaxed.
Cramps in calves. θ Dysentery.
Feet icy cold.

Limbs in general

Rheumatic pains after suppression of gonorrhœal discharge by large doses of Balsam copaiva ; pains wandering from joint to joint, compelling him to stay in bed.
Coldness in extremities, they look purple ; small, spasmodic, frequent pulse.
Paralysis of upper and lower extremities.

Rest. position. motion

Rest : sticking pains in hip joints.
Must lie in bed : diarrhœa ; rheumatic pains in joints.
Could not lie comfortably on either side.
Child sits in dark corner of room or covers eyes tightly with hands or walks about with eyes closed and head sunk upon breast. θ Ophthalmia.

Somnolence ; frequent yawning and stretching.

Touch. passive motion. injuries

Touch : soreness of pit of stomach not permitting least, even of clothing ; abdomen very painful ; glans painful ; on os uteri causes pain ; stitches in forehead < ; ulcers on tonsil sensitive.
Pressure : eyeballs sensitive ; tenderness over superior maxilla ; quick pain beneath larynx ; pain in pharynx ; abdomen sensitive ; painfulness of cecal region and course of transverse colon ; on os uteri causing pains.
Depressing tongue : pain in larynx <.
Cannot bear tight or even close clothing around waist ; soreness of epigastrium.
Scratching : causes bleeding of skin.

Skin

Burning and redness of skin, with formation of small vesicles.
Grey color of nails.
Severe and stubborn eczema of sweating parts of body, exposed to fumes of poison.
Condylomata.
Rash of secondary syphilis.
Ulcers which perforate or become phagedenic.
Blisters on arms and abdomen.
Scorbutic spots over whole body, mingled with itch-like eruptions, herpes and boils.
One year after appearance of chancre, which disappeared after local treatment, eruptions of red nodules as large as lentils, over chest and upper abdomen ; stitches in forehead from within outward, < evening and on touching hair ; vomiting after eating ; swelling

Lecture

Merc. cor. has more excoriation and burning, more activity and excitement.

Merc. is slower and more sluggish. Merc. cor. is violent and active in its movements, it takes hold and runs its course with greater activity. So with a mercury base we have often to prefer this salt.

In the eye symptoms there is more excoriation. The pains, burning, smarting, etc., in the eruptions and ulcers are more violent. In Merc. we have slow spreading ulcers, but in Merc. cor. there is great eating; it will spread over an area as large as your hand in a night. He has the mercurial odor and sweat, and he is sallow; he needs mercury, but a more active preparation than Merc. viv.

Merc. cor. has decided symptoms of its own, but they are limited. You cannot tell the ptyalism, or the lardaceous ulcers apart.

In sore throat, if it is a Merc. case, the ulcers are spreading rapidly and burning and smarting like coals of fire, you would say that Merc. is not so intense as this. You need Merc. cor. for the violence, the intense burning, and the rapid spread. The throat is enormously swollen, the glands are swollen, and the thirst is insatiable.

In dysentery there is more violence; copious bleeding; great anxiety, can scarcely leave the stool a second, great tenesmus of rectum and bladder; urging to urination and stool is constant; great burning in the rectum. It is a violent case of dysentery. I would prefer Merc. in ordinary Merc. cases, but if this patient is not relieved he will not live, and Merc. cor. is needed here.

In the urinary organs the symptoms are violent. Albuminuria is more marked in Merc. cor. than in Merc. It is one of the most frequently indicated remedies in the albuminuria of pregnancy and a very useful remedy when gout is present.

From slight irritation of the foreskin of the male organ, the mucous membrane and skin contract and phimosis takes place.

Merc. cor. relieves the itching and burning, and causes the purse-string to let up. It is seldom indicated in gonorrhoea, but is called for when there is greenish yellow or bloody watery discharge, with violent burning and urging to urination and to stool, and violent painful erections. Chancres spread with great rapidity.

Stitching, rending, tearing pains, here and there, especially in the chest.
