Common name

Arsenite of Copper-Scheele's Green

General

A remedy for symptoms depending on deficient kidney action, various intestinal affections, cholera morbus and infantum; entero-colitis, diarrhœa, and dysentery. Gastro-intestinal disturbances of influenza and typhoid. Uræmic convulsions, headache, vertigo and unconscious conditions resulting from brain œdema. Nephritis of pregnancy. Convulsions preceded by gastro-intestinal symptoms. Chlorosis. Bronchial asthma and with emphysema. Purulent endocarditis (Royal). Painful neuroses, enteroptosis. Delirium and tremor cordis.

Mouth

Tongue thickly coated, dirty brown, white, metallic taste; thirst. Dry mouth.

Heart

Cardiac rhythm and force altered due to defective elimination.

Abdomen

Gastro-enteritis. Violent abdominal pain. Diarrhœa in phthisis. Cholera (Ars; Verat; Camph). Rumbling and sharp cutting pain. Dark liquid stools.

Back

Persistent lameness. Pain in lumbar region and in lower left shoulder-blade; chest feels tight.

Urinary

Renal inefficiency and uræmia. Garlicky odor. Diabetes. Urine of high specific gravity; increased, acetones and diacetic acid.

Male

Perspiration of scrotum; is constantly damp and moist. Boils on scrotum. Purulent discharge of a white color from urethra; tingling and burning in urethra; pain in prostate; pains in penis.

Extremities

Cramps in calves of legs, worse after midnight, only relieved by getting out of bed and standing. Ulcers; gangrene.

Skin

Icy cold. Sweat, and skin even when dry. Cold, clammy perspiration of an intermittent nature. Acne, pustules on face and in the cruro-genital region; ulcers look like chancre. Gangrene; carbuncles.

Third trituration.

Characteristics

Cupr. ars . combines the characters of its two metallic components. Intense neuralgic pains in abdomen; awful distress in epigastric region; burning along œsophagus and in urethra; numbness; creeping, itching, and chilly sensations. According to J. N. Majumdar, who gives a case, the great characteristic of Cup. ars . in choleraic conditions is "icy-coldness of the whole body, with cramps and an obstinate hiccough." B. L. Bhaduri pointed this out to him. Salzer has shown that "cold, clammy perspiration of intermittent nature " is unique and characteristic. He has found it most valuable in the collapse stage of cholera, where intermittent cold, clammy sweat was noted. The skin is very sensitive to touch; and pressure < all symptoms. Rest > and motion < most symptoms; but motion > stiffness of back and tingling of hands. Damp weather = neuralgia of abdomen. Weakness and restlessness. There is a periodicity in the symptom.

Head

Vertigo, confusion of ideas and headache between temples. ─ Fulness in head, brain seems to expand and press against frontal bone. ─ Sharp pain in temples, < in l. ─ Headache between temples; the pain seems to meet in centre of forehead and pass thence down nose. ─ Dulness and soreness of head in morning after washing.

Eyes

Dark spots before eyes; eyes very sensitive.

Ears

Boring pain in r. ear; sharp pain in temple, < in l.

Nose

Bones of nose very sore, esp. on pressure.

Face

Face haggard; expression of great suffering. ─ Violent twitching and jerking of muscles of l. side of face between eye and corner of mouth. ─ Soreness of bones.

Mouth

Mouth very dry; frequently called for something to wet his mouth. ─ Shooting in upper l. molars, extending upward into superior maxillary line. ─ Back part of tongue thickly coated. ─ Tongue, dry and tremulous. ─ Bad breath.

Throat

Burning along œsophagus from stomach to mouth.

Stomach

Moderate thirst; but drink of any kind increased the nausea; a few mouthfuls satisfied; desire for drink seemed rather due to dry mouth than thirst. ─ Intense thirst. ─ Nausea and vomiting, < after eating; < after study. ─ Obstinate hiccough. ─ Nausea and awful distress at epigastrium. ─ Burning. ─ Cutting in stomach while eating. ─ Cramp in stomach and bowels, followed by tonsillitis.

Abdomen

Burning, cramping, colic pains. ─ Spasmodic and neuralgic pains, accompanied by screams and cramps in fingers and toes. ─ Cramping pains in lower bowels, with extreme vesical and rectal tenesmus; micturition frequent causing great suffering. ─ Attacks of excruciating pains in bowels occurring every two or three weeks.

Stool and Anus

Vomiting and purging, with cramps and collapse. ─ Rectal tenesmus, with almost constant mucous discharges. ─ Chronic slimy diarrhœa during summer, with cramps in abdomen.

Urinary Organs

Pain in sacral region, with frequent urging to urinate. ─ Dark red urine; burning pain during and after urination. ─ Strong smelling urine; odour of garlic.

Male Sexual Organs

White purulent discharge from urethra; soreness of penis, with pain in prostate gland; tingling and burning in urethra. ─ Perspiration of scrotum, which is constantly moist and damp. ─ Boils frequently forming on scrotum.

Female Sexual Organs

About close of menses, worked out of doors during a moist, drizzling day; during night agonising pains in lower abdominal region; tender spot over l. ovary; tongue heavily coated white. ─ During pregnancy constant nausea, rejects everything; weak, very nervous; pulse quick and feeble; spasmodic uterine pain; at one time tenesmus and dysenteric stools.

Respiratory Organs

Voice altered; speech difficult. ─ Oppression of chest as if constricted. ─ Weight on chest, with difficult breathing. ─ Soreness of small spot in l. scapula, extending into l. lung, followed by dull, sticking pains in l. chest, between sixth and seventh ribs, < on deep inspiration; weak, Dumb feeling in l. chest, l. side of back, l. shoulder and arm. ─ Dull soreness in r. side of chest, with dull pains in back, < from deep inspiration.

Heart

Heart's action weak and hurried; pulse small, compressible, weak, and frequent, though quite regular. ─ Sudden debility, with dull pain in heart, and sense of oppression; l. chest feels too small; long involuntary inspiration; empty feeling in stomach, with vertigo and confusion of ideas, and headache between temples. ─ Palpitation of heart, with trembling of limbs. ─ Palpitation moving walls of chest up and down. ─ Cardiac chorea: at one time heart beats very irregular and feeble, at another time violent and irregular; attacks appear in paroxysms, action being normal in intervals.

Neck and Back

Soreness of glands of neck, with stiffness of neck; pain < on moving head. ─ Severe pains under lower angle of l. scapula < from motion or breathing. ─ Stiffness and lameness of back, < by motion > by rest; returns after sitting awhile. ─ Lameness of lumbar region. ─ Pain in r. lumbar region, and in anterior portion of r. thigh.

Limbs

L. arm feels numb and powerless; similar feeling in l. leg. ─ Spasms in extremities; coldness. ─ Itching of arms and legs. ─ Pustular tumours in wrists and ankles, and excessive sensitiveness and irritability of skin.

Generalities

Tremulousness of whole body, very noticeable on attempting to walk. ─ Quivering, impossible to control. ─ Great prostration; as from traumatic shock.

Fever

Whole surface covered with cold moisture; skin pale like death. ─ Icy coldness of whole body, with cramps and obstinate hiccough. ─ Intermittent, cold clammy sweat (in cholera collapse).

Sensorium

Vertigo, confusion of ideas, and headache between temples.

Inner head

Very severe headache all over forehead, but especially in temples.
Dull pain in forehead, but most severe in right temple.
Headache spreads over entire forehead, and finally settles in right side of forehead and over temporal bone, and becomes dull and throbbing.

Soreness of right temple when pressed against pillow.
Sharp pain in temples < in left.

Dull soreness in right internal ear.

Smell and nose

Irritability of mucous membrane of nose with fluid discharge ; abundant salivation.
Bones of nose very sore, especially on pressure.

Upper face

Face : pale ; anxious ; sunken ; œdematous.
Violent twitching and jerking of facial muscles of left side, between eye and corner of mouth.
Soreness of bones of face.
Intermittent, throbbing, shooting pains in upper jaw.

Lower face

Intermittent and throbbing pain in right half of inferior maxillary bone.
Lips bluish.

Teeth and gums

Shooting pain in upper molars of left side, extending upward into superior maxillary bone.
Twitches of pain in right upper and left lower posterior molars, more protracted in former, but more acute in latter.
Tenderness of gums.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste : bitter ; metallic.
Tongue : coated white ; brownish-white ; tremulous, covered with mucus ; cool.
Back part of tongue thickly coated.

Inner mouth

Bad breath.

Palate and throat

Burning along œsophagus from stomach to mouth.
Rolling about floor in intense pain, which she described as burning her throat and bowels.
Soreness of throat.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

No appetite.
Intense thirst.

Eating and drinking

Child refuses to take anything, probably from inability to swallow.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Much eructation of wind.
Nausea : constant, violent ; on awaking, with bitter taste ; with headache between temples ; with lameness of back ; with unsteadiness of head, < after study.
Nausea, with burning pain in stomach and bowels ; palpitation of heart with trembling of limbs ; headache, particularly in forehead, but whole head feels bruised ; jerking in limbs.
Suddenly seized with violent sickness, and vomiting of a light green substance, like bile diluted with water.
For five days, persistent vomiting of watery greenish fluid, accompanied by chills and thirst for cold water ; < eating or drinking.
Violent vomiting.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Great sensitiveness of epigastric region to slightest touch.
Dull aching pain over epigastric and right hypochondriac regions, with nausea and paroxysmal vomiting ; vomiting frequently a glairy froth.
Empty, vacant feeling in stomach.
Burning in stomach.
Stomach sore as if bruised.
Cutting pain in stomach while eating.
Cramps in stomach and bowels, followed by tonsillitis.

Abdomen and loins

Whole abdomen meteoric, very painful to touch, but especially over region of liver.
Pains in abdomen like those of flatulent colic.
Rumbling in bowels ; sharp, quick pains in lower bowels.
Sharp, cutting pains in abdomen, afterwards subsiding into a dull soreness, followed by an unpleasant warmth in abdomen, and a severe burning in stomach.
Severe burning, cramping pains in abdomen.
Violent colic ; frequent vomiting, with purging ; cold sweats ; intense thirst.
Spasmodic and neuralgic pains in bowels, accompanied by screams, and cramps in fingers and toes ; great debility and threatened collapse.

Dull soreness in right side of chest, with dull pains in back ; < from deep inspirations.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Sudden debility, with dull pain in heart, and sensation of oppression ; left chest feels too small ; long involuntary inspirations ; empty feeling in stomach, with vertigo, confusion of ideas, and headache between temples.
Palpitation of heart, with trembling of limbs.
Aberrations in rhythm of heart's action ; at one time beats are very irregular and feeble, at another violent and irregular ; attacks appear in paroxysms, with intermissions, during which nothing abnormal in action of heart can be detected. θ Cardiac chorea.
Pulsation of heart moving wall of chest up and down.
Angina pectoris.
Pulse : frequent ; small, rapid, very irritable ; very feeble.

Neck and back

Soreness of glands of neck, with stiffness of neck ; pain < on moving head.
Severe pain under lower angle of left scapula, < from motion or breathing ; cannot take full breath.
Stiffness and lameness of back, < from motion. > during rest ; returns after sitting awhile.
Lameness of lumbar region.
Pain in right lumbar region, and in anterior portion of right thigh.

Upper limbs

Numb, weak feeling in left shoulder and arm.
Peculiar numb feeling in left arm and hand, with pain in internal surface of arm, and tingling of palm of hand and of fingers, < on motion.
Constantly moving arms up and down and from side to side, with trembling of fingers.

Lower limbs

Limbs ache while walking ; gait unsteady ; increasing debility.
Pain in anterior portion of right thigh.

Limbs in general

Left arm feels numb and powerless, and soon a similar sensation in left leg.
Spasms in extremities.
Extremities very cold.
Pustular tumors on wrists and ankles, and excessive sensitiveness and irritability of skin.
Itching of arms and legs.

Rest. position. motion

Rest : > headache ; > lameness and stiffness of back.
Motion : < headache ; soreness and stiffness of neck < on moving head ; > stiffness and lameness of back ; tingling of hand and fingers <.
Rolling about floor : with intense pain in throat and bowels.
Walking : limbs ache.

Nerves

General debility, want of energy, indisposition to do anything.
Feeling of weakness and extreme prostration.
Very restless ; nervous.
Chorea ; syncope ; spasms ; severe convulsions.
Epilepsy ; death-like syncope.

Sleep

Sleep disturbed and unrefreshing.
Persistent sleeplessness.

Time

Morning : soreness of head after waking.

Temperature and weather

Moist, drizzly day : agonizing pain in lower abdominal region.

Fever

Chilly feeling over entire body.
Creeping sensation produced by contact of clothing.
Cold and drowsy ; skin cold.
Covered with a cold, clammy perspiration.

Attacks, periodicity

Frequent : vomiting of glairy froth ; micturition.
Attacks : of irregular and feeble, or irregular and violent beats of heart.
Intermittent : pain in right half of inferior maxillary bone.
For five days : persistent vomiting.
Every two or three weeks : attacks of excruciating pain in bowels.
During summer : chronic diarrhœa ; choleraic diarrhœa.

Pressing against pillow : soreness of right temple.
Pressure : < dull soreness in right occipital bone ; soreness of bones of nose <.

Skin

Skin sensitive to contact of clothing, which produce chilly creeping sensation.
Severe itching of skin.
Pustular tumors on wrists and ankles, and excessive sensitiveness and irritability of skin.
Vesicular and pustular eruptions, sometimes followed by very painful ulcers, and finally by erythematous swellings.

Stage of life, constitution

Miss M., æt. 20 ; pain in left ovary.
Young married woman, with one child ; diarrhœa.
Mrs. M., has three young children, second month of gestation ; vomiting.
Mrs. W., æt. 30 ; vomiting.
