Keynote

Best suited for leuco-phlegmatic persons with anaemic or chlorotic conditions; easily fatigued, and in consequence not inclined to any kind of labor; feeble or suspended functions of organs or special senses. Pale, chlorotic; deranged menses (Fer., Puls.), accompanied by vertigo, headache, dim vision. Pains; pressive, drawing or tearing of parts where bone lie near the surface. Ailments: from suppressed grief and terrors of conscience; from duty not done or bad act committed. Great sadness and peevishness, irritable, morose, ill-humored; inclined to weep; desire for solitude; aversion to open air (rev. of Puls.). Headache in anaemic patients, with flickering before eyes or dim vision, on rising in morning. Flickering before eyes, fiery sparks, as of various colors, glittering needles, dim vision of fog or smoke. Burning sore pain in heels, when sitting, standing or walking in open air (Agar., Caust., Val., Phyt.).

General

Large doses produce violent purging and vomiting; disturbed digestion with very salty saliva. Anæmic and chlorotic conditions. Affections of uterus. Gastro-intestinal and genito-urinary tracts affected, inducing secondary anæmia and various reflexes. Sleepiness, moroseness, and lassitude. Cough at night while asleep without waking, especially in children (Cham; Nitr ac).

Head

Terrors of conscience. Grieves over duty neglected. Depression, with weeping desire to be alone. Aching in morning, with flickering before eyes; sneezing with itching in ear. Vertigo; things turn in a circle; better in the room; worse, open air. One-sided headache. Frequent sneezing with itching in ears.

Eyes

Mind and Disposition

Taciturn, depressed, out of humor. Inclined to internal, undemonstrative grief. Sudden change of sadness and cheerfulness. Weakness of the memory. Dulness of the mind and indisposition to perform any sort of labor.

Head

Vertigo ; when leaning against something, he feels as if the brain were in motion. Vertigo ; increasing when exercising in the open air, relieved when sitting in a room. Stitches in the left temple, the forehead, with dizziness. Headache in the morning, when rising. Stitches in the head (temples ; forehead, when stooping). Congestion of blood to the head ; increased sensation of heat as the head. The headache is ; relieved by applications of cold water. Fine, sharp, itching, stinging in the hairy scalp, which constantly reappears in another place after scratching ; worse in the evening and when at rest, better from motion.

Eyes

Dilatation of the pupils. The eyes lie deep in the orbits, look dim, and are surrounded by blue rings. Itching of the eyelids. Swelling of the upper eyelids. Obscuration of sight. Double vision ; strabismus. Burning in the eyes ; worse when reading.

Ears

Itching in the ears, with increased secretion of wax. Hearing diminished.

Nose

Diminished sense of smell. Fluent coryza (morning).

Face

Pale face. Small pimples in the face, rapidly filling up and then drying up.

Mouth and Throat

Dryness of the lips, without thirst. Increased secretion of tenacious mucus in the mouth. Mouth and throat redder than usual. Tongue coated white. Fine stitches ; in, the surface of the tongue. Redness of the tip of the tongue, with small, burning blister, impeding speech and mastication, with increase of saliva. The upper lip feels numb, as from an induration. Burning on the tip of the tongue (evening). Food tastes flat. Dryness in the throat. Sensation of painful constriction in the throat. Burning and scraping in the throat. The tonsils and palate are shrivelled and white.

Stomach and Abdomen

Aversion do cat bread and butter ; less aversion to warm food. After eating but little, aversion to the rest of the food, with sensation of nausea in the throat. Thirst during the night. Thirst and hunger, with dryness in the throat. Nausea and accumulation of water in the mouth. Nausea and fulness in the chest, with unusual hunger (morning). Nausea (morning ; after eating fat food). Vomiting of blood. Nausea caused by eating and drinking ; could only drink lemonade without being nauseated. Vomiting of mucus followed by sleep. Fulness and pressure in the stomach, -pit of the stomach,- as if he had eaten too much. Stitches in the stomach, region of the liver, navel, abdomen. Sensitiveness, when moving, of the abdomen to pressure. Rumbling in the intestines.

Stool and Anus

Frequent discharge of hard stool (hard lumps). Diarrhœa, watery, papescent, with vomiting at night. Pressure in the rectum. Discharge of blood from the rectum. Drawing, pressing pain in and about the anus and perineum, as from subcutaneous ulceration, when walking or sitting.

Urinary Organs

Frequent copious emission of whitish urine. Stitches in the urethra, with desire to urinate, followed by a sudden discharge of dark red-yellow urine. Frequent micturition, with pressure on the bladder and rectum. Urine dark-colored, with flakes floating in it.

Sexual Organs

Men. The prepuce and corona glandis feel sore from slight rubbing. Women. Catamenia too profuse and too frequent. Before menstruation (at night) labor-like pains ; the abdomen was bloated and swollen on the previous day ; the menstrual blood is black and clotted. Secretion from the swollen mammæ, like milk.

Respiratory Organs and Chest

When reading aloud the voice is weak. Scraping and dryness in the pharynx, causing a suffocative cough. Oppression of the chest, with impeded breathing. Sensation of great weakness in the chest, as if there was not strength enough to breathe. Pressure in the sternum. Palpitation of the heart ; stitches in the region of the heart.

Back and Neck

Dull stitches in the region of the kidney ; worse when drawing a long breath. In the neck stiffness ; a paralytic pain.

Extremities

Upper. Paralytic hard pressure in the upper and forearm, as if in the periosteum and interiorly in the muscles, extending to the fingers, hindering writing. Cramp-like, slow contraction of the right thumb and index ; they have to be extended by force. Stinging itching or pricking, as from needles between the fingers, ceasing after scratching. Sensation of numbness in the right hand. Lower. Cramp-like pain in the posterior surface of the thigh, above the bend of the right knee. Sensation as if sprained in the left foot. Soreness in the heels when walking. Feet (toes) frost-bitten (looking red).

Generalities

Pressing, drawing pains, generally in the periosteum or where the skin covers the bones. Weakness, especially in the evening, with ill-humor and sleepiness ; better when moving about.

Fever

Pulse double heat. Attacks of chilliness in the morning or evening. During the evening chill, great sensitiveness to cold air or to being uncovered. After the chill heat, especially of the face, -the hands remaining cold for a long time. Heat after eating. Perspiration at night, during sleep, of offensive smell.

Skin

Itching ; pricking at night, especially at night in bed ; disappearing in one place when scratching, but reappearing at once at another place.

Conditions

Aggravation when at rest and in the evening. As long as he moves about he feels well, but as soon as he sits down, especially in the evening, he experiences various inconveniences. Aggravation from eating fat food ; while reposing (when sitting, standing). Amelioration from moving (walking).

Characteristics

Cyclamen has a traditional reputation as a remedy for affections of the uterus and appendages. The later provings have demonstrated the correctness of this. It is in many ways analogous to Pulsatilla , from which it differs mainly in having no > from open air; and in not having thirstlessness as so frequent an accompaniment of other conditions.

It is suited to the phlegmatic temperament; blonde leucophlegmatic subjects with chlorotic conditions; disinclined for labour and easily fatigued; special senses enfeebled or their functions suspended. Debility, torpidity of mind and body. Dulness of senses; flickering before the eyes; squint, especially in connection with menstrual irregularities or fevers; after convulsions, convergent squint; left eye drawn inwards. Amblyopia, diplopia, hemiopia. Many digestive disturbances; saliva has a salty taste, which is communicated to all food eaten. After eating but little, satiety, aversion to food, with nausea in palate and thirst. Desire for lemonade. Aversion to bread, butter, meat, fat, beer, and ordinary food; craving for inedible things; for sardines. Frequent vomiting in morning. Hiccough is very marked. Hiccough during pregnancy. Prostatic troubles, with stitches and pressure, urging to stool and micturition. Menstruation too early, with some relief of melancholy mood and heaviness of feet. Scanty or suppressed menstruation, with headache and vertigo. During pregnancy: hiccough; loathing and nausea in mouth and throat; complaints after weaning. Pressing, drawing, or tearing pains at parts where bones lie near surface. Chilliness. Itching leaving a numb sensation. Chilblains; itching and pricking, < at night in bed. Eidherr, of Vienna, has given the best account of this remedy ( Allg. Hom. Zeit ., liv. 7, translated H. R ., viii. 558). Hahnemann proved it on males only, eliciting as leading symptoms: "Stupor, sluggish memory, vertigo , dull, pressing headache, obscured sight, dilated pupils, drawing pains in neck and teeth; nausea, eructation, disgust for food, hiccough following soon after dinner; stitching, pinching pains in abdomen; flatulence and pressure to urinate. Oppression of chest, pressing pain in chest, drawing and stitching pain in back. Sawing pressure, drawing and stitching in extremities; prostration and itching. Moroseness, sleepiness, lassitude, troubled, heavy dreams; chilliness of whole body alternating with heat, thirstlessness, disinclination for work or conversation, great dejection and melancholy; at times joyous sensations with lively phantasies." The Vienna provings corroborated these, but, including both sexes, also elicited symptoms in the female sexual sphere: Menstruation more copious; more frequent; too early, with severe abdominal pains. Accompanied with labour-like pains; flow excessive, black and lumpy. Recommencement of menses after protracted cessation (clinical). Eidherr's clinical experience illustrates in a remarkable way Cyclamen's sphere of action. His cases include: 4 of chlorosis; 9 of retarded and scanty menstruation; 18 of complications with vertigo and headache accompanying scanty menses; 2 of diplopia; 1 of strabismus. In numbers of cases Cycl . developed ocular symptoms in the patients, in 15x and 3x. In one instance a higher potency of the same remedy antidoted this effect. He found the remedy especially suited to blonde leuco-phlegmatic subjects. (But one of the cured was a Jewess and was presumably not a blonde.) It will be noticed that the "sleepiness, moroseness, and lassitude," and also the vertigo noted by Hahnemann, are prominent in many of Eidherr's cases. Josepha K., 24, blonde, pale delicate skin, pale lips and gums, had menstruated normally till 22, when she got wet at a picnic just as menstruation was starting. It stopped at once and did not reappear till ten months later, after vigorous use of all kinds of domestic remedies. Now the periods were accompanied by terrible abdominal, labour-like pains, lasting eleven hours. Menses recurred every two or four months, always with the pains, starting from sacrum, extending along both sides of abdomen to pelvis. They were periodical, every one, two, or five minutes, during which time there was no flow; the blood appearing after these attacks was somewhat watery. Other symptoms were: Eyelids slightly œdematous; pressing pain in forehead; vertigo frequently changing into syncope; chilliness of whole body; disturbed, unrefreshing sleep interspersed with terrible dreams; continued loathing for meat; longing for salt fish; frequent vomiting in morning. After partial relief from Puls ., Cyclamen made a complete cure. The ocular symptoms which developed were remarkable. The vertigo and headache were untouched by Puls ., but quickly subsided under Cycl . 15x. On their disappearance she saw fiery flames dancing before her eyes on awakening at night, and in the morning she saw everything double. And she had the hallucination as if two persons lay in her bed, and that the body of the other overlapped hers by half. Cycl . was discontinued and in two days her sight was normal. Anna F., 20, blonde, menstruated since her tenth year. In seventeenth year suffered from chlorosis; ever since, menstruation regular, but lasting only one-two days in a moderate degree. Is troubled also at other times by vertigo and pressing pain in forehead and temples, which attacks are ameliorated by footbaths with ashes. Appetite poor; little thirst; stool regular; sleeps too long; always sleepy; is of dejected mood, morose; all movements, as well as speech, languid; palpitation. Puls . made no change. Cycl . 3x quickly improved headache, vertigo, and spirits. After three days sight became obscured, and there was glimmering before eyes. A vivacious Jewess, 16, menstruated twice regularly after the first commencement in June, then went six weeks, and by the end of December the recurrence entirely ceased. She lost spirits, sought seclusion, was offended by very trifles; her usual work was distasteful to her, and she could not be prevailed upon to leave the house for a walk. She would sleep unusually long in the morning. The hitherto blooming girl had become pale, anæmic, with swollen eyelids; lips and gums pale; heart turbulent. She complained chiefly of great lassitude compelling her to rest frequently on going up stairs; palpitation without cause; she was apprehensive, had a feeling as if all the rooms were too small, and yet would not leave the house. All pastimes rejected; was only content when she could seclude herself and sit down and weep. During the forenoon often had pressing pains in forehead with vertigo; appetite poor; stool sluggish. March 14th Cycl . 15x was prescribed. After several weeks the headache and vertigo had become less severe and the attacks less frequent. April 19th the period set in, and with its flow headache and vertigo left her completely. May 15th, menstruation recurred rather copiously, and the patient was well. Two cases of pulmonary catarrh were cured, both had pressing headache and vertigo and one scanty menses as well. The following case of hemicrania was cured: Theresa F., 37, had menstruated sparingly and irregularly (often at two or three months' intervals). For four years suffered from violent headache affecting right side of head and face; coming every 8-14 days, spells lasting 12-36 hours. During menstruation the attacks were extra severe. Patient was emaciated; skin, gums, and lips pale. Right eye closed owing to cramps in eyelids; when forcibly opened a stream of hot tears gushed out; otherwise the eye was normal. Under Cycl . 3 the symptoms diminished, but there appeared "glittering sparks before the eyes" and these remained after all symptoms of headache had gone. Cycl . was given persistently, the periods became regular and rather copious and the headaches entirely ceased. Another case (in a wet-nurse who had just weaned her baby) presented unceasing, violent, stitching pain in temporal region extending to vertex. Throbbing temporal arteries. Bell . diminished the pain, but vertigo came on. Under Cycl . 3x headache and vertigo disappeared altogether, but the patient complained of her sight having 3 become so weak that she did not dare to walk alone . This passed off when the medicine was discontinued and her headache did not recur. Cycl . 15x cured a boy of violent squinting. Six months before, he had a fall from a table; convulsions followed, and after the second attack the squinting came on. Arnica was given and the convulsions did not recur, but the squinting remained. Cycl . 15x was given, and after a few weeks the squint entirely disappeared. (Wurmb cured a case of squint in a coachman with Cycl .) Acute rheumatism with retrocession of menses was also cured by Eidherr. His last case was remarkable and important. Theresa P., 30, of short, robust stature, had never been ill till ten years previously. At that time, without apparent infection, an eruption appeared over her whole body with terrible itching. It was declared to be itch and was driven away with Sulphur ointment. With the receding of the eruption her eyesight waned so that she was soon unable to walk without a guide. She sees large objects only in outline and only then if in a strong light; in closed rooms she cannot discern anything. The pupils are dilated, but there are no other objective symptoms. She had never menstruated. She complains of congestions of the blood about every three or four weeks, accompanied by headache, a pressing vertigo, heaviness and frequent trembling of the lower extremities and of a pressure towards the parts. For several months she experienced an itching of the skin over the whole body, which becomes intolerable, especially during the time she should have her period. There is nothing to be seen, however, on the skin. In September Sul . 15x was given and quickly relieved the skin symptoms; but later (in the beginning of December) she sought relief for a violent headache and vertigo. Cycl . 3x lessened these by the fourth day. A week later she reported both symptoms gone; but now "fiery balls danced continually before her eyes." Cycl . 15x three times a day. Shortly after (December 27th) the fiery balls ceased to trouble her. Early in January the menses reappeared, with considerable abdominal pains, and the headache and vertigo had disappeared altogether. Thereafter menses appeared regularly and copiously. From Dr. Eidherr's account no improvement appears to have been effected in the power of vision. Dr. George Royal (of Des Moines, Iowa) records another use of this drug. A medical man had suffered from soreness of the heel for over three months. The soreness seemed to be in the bone, and was < sitting or standing. Not so much noticed on walking. Rhus, Kali bi ., and Phos. ac . had done no good. Cycl . 30 cured in a week. It also cured, in three days, a case almost identically similar. The only < here was on standing, Cycl . has cured migraine with scintillations after the failure of Iris v . In the case recorded the headache increased as the vision returned, the head seemed about to burst ( Kali bi .) Itching, pricking < at night in bed. Many symptoms are < by rest, > on walking about. Sitting < menstrual flow. Drawing shoulders forward < , drawing them backward > twinges in back. Many symptoms are < at night. Open air < , cold water > headache. > From moistening diseased parts and from bathing. < From eating at night.

Ears

Drawing in the ears. ─ Diminution of hearing, as if the ears were stopped.

Nose

Diminution of smell. ─ Fluent coryza, with sneezing (morning).

Teeth

Toothache, with dull tractions at night. ─ Shootings and piercings in the teeth.

Mouth

Tongue loaded with a white coating. ─ Constant sensation of roughness and of mucus in the mouth. ─ Sensation of torpor in the upper lip, as if it were hardened. ─ Dryness of, the lips, without thirst. ─ Mouth and throat redder than usual. ─ Fine stitches on the surface of the tongue. ─ Burning on the tip of the tongue (evening). ─ In the evening, great dryness in the palate, with hunger and thirst. ─ The tonsils and palate are shrivelled and white.

Throat

Dryness in the throat. Sensation of painful constriction in the throat. ─ Burning and scraping in throat. ─ Nausea in throat.

Appetite

Putrid taste in the mouth. ─ Insipid taste of all food. ─ No thirst all day, but it occurs in evening as face and hands become warm. ─ Hunger and appetite rather weak, esp. in the morning and in the evening. ─ Speedy satiety, followed by disgust, on beginning to eat. ─ After eating but little, aversion to the rest of the food, with sensation of nausea in the throat. ─ Repugnance to butter (aversion to eat bread and butter), and cold food; less aversion to warm food. ─ Great inclination to sleep after a meal.

Stomach

Frequent risings, empty or acid. ─ Risings, with hiccough, esp. after a meal. ─ Nausea, with inclination to vomit, and uneasiness in the region of the epigastrium, as after taking fat food, esp. after dinner and supper. ─ Nausea and fulness in the chest, with unusual hunger (morning). ─ Nausea caused by eating and drinking; could only drink lemonade without being nauseated. ─ Vomiting of mucus followed by sleep. ─ Vomiting of blood. ─ Water-brash, with nausea, esp. in the evening.

Abdomen

Fulness and pressure at the pit of the stomach, as if it were overloaded. ─ Uneasiness in the abdomen, with nausea. ─ Painful sensibility of the abdomen, on the slightest touch. ─ Sudden attacks of griping, with pinching. ─ Stitches in the stomach, region of the liver, navel, abdomen. ─ Borborygmi in the abdomen, immediately after a meal.

Stool and Anus

Evacuations hard and frequent. ─ Evacuations of the consistence of pap, with vomiting at night. ─ Pressure in the rectum. ─ Discharge of blood from the rectum. ─ Drawing pressure in the anus, and in the perineum, as from subcutaneous ulceration, when, walking or sitting.

Urinary Organs

Frequent want to make water, with abundant emission of whitish urine. ─ Shootings in the urethra, when making water, followed by a sudden discharge of a dark red urine.

Male Sexual Organs

The prepuce and corona glandis feel sore from slight rubbing.

Female Sexual Organs

Catamenia too profuse and too frequent. ─ Before menstruation (at night) labour-like pains; the abdomen was bloated and swollen on the previous day; the menstrual blood is black and clotted. ─ Secretion from the swollen mammæ like milk. ─ Menses suppressed.

Respiratory Organs

When reading aloud the voice is weak. ─ Scraping and dryness in the pharynx, causing a suffocative cough.

Chest

In the evening, shortness of breath, as from weakness. ─ Fits of suffocation. ─ Pressure in the sternum. ─ Oppression of the chest, with difficulty of respiration. ─ Sensation of great weakness in the chest, as if there was not strength enough to breathe. ─ Lancinations, and acute pullings in the chest, with short and difficult respiration.

Heart

Pressure on the heart, as from congestion of blood, with very sensible palpitations of the heart; stitches in the region of the heart.

Neck and Back

Pains of excoriation in the nape of the neck. ─ Aching, with paralytic weakness, or traction in the nape of the neck and in the neck. ─ Shooting pains in the loins. ─ Dull stitches in the region of the kidney; worse when drawing along breath.

Upper Limbs

Pressure, as by a hard body, on the arms, as far as the fingers, which hinders writing. ─ Tractive pains in the arms, and as far as the fingers. ─ Cramp-like, slow contraction of the right thumb and index; they have to be extended by force. ─ Pains in bones of forearms, bruise-like, < by touch, pressure, movement. ─ Pain, as after being struck, or pain of bruising in the arms. ─ Painful traction in the arms, and in the wrist. ─ Contraction of the fingers. ─ Red vesicles in the joints of the fingers, preceded by violent itching, ceasing after scratching.

Lower Limbs

Cramp-like pains in the thighs. ─ Red spots in the thigh, as from a burn. ─ Frequent and violent itching in the calves of the legs, in the ankle-bones and in the toes. ─ Pain of dislocation in the joints of the foot. ─ Sensation as if sprained in the l. foot. ─ Soreness of the heels when walking. ─ Pains of excoriation in the toes, when walking. ─ Deadness of the toes after walking. ─ Fetid sweat between the toes.

Generalities

Pressive traction, or tearings, chiefly where the bones are covered by the skin. ─ Affections of the inner temples; want of appetite; nausea in the throat; hiccough; simple pressure in the muscles; tearing with drawing and pressure in the bones; pain as if paralyzed. ─ During movement, all the sufferings, except dejection, disappear; but numerous symptoms show themselves when in a sitting posture. ─ Great lassitude, esp. evening, with painful weariness and stiffness in the legs, and drawing pressure in thighs and knees.

Skin

Gnawing itching in several parts of the skin, esp. when seated. ─ Darting and insupportable itching, in the evening in bed.

Sleep

Great inclination to lie down, and to sleep. ─ Late sleep in the evening, with sensible pulsations in the brain. ─ Nightmare on falling asleep. ─ Unrefreshing sleep interfused with terrible dreams.

Fever

Pulse double-beat. ─ Attacks of chilliness in the morning or evening. ─ During the evening, chill, great sensitiveness to cold air or to being uncovered. ─ Febrile shivering and cold, followed by heat, esp. in the face, with redness, augmented after a meal; afterwards anxiety, with heat in some parts, in the back of the hand, and in the nape of the neck, but not in the face.

Sensorium

Feels as if brain was in motion when leaning against something.

Inner head

Headache with flickering before eyes on rising in morning.
Sensation as if brain wobbled about while walking ; menses suppressed or scanty ; patient chlorotic.
Attacks of heat and throbbing in head.

Outer head

Tearing pressing, externally in head.
Fine, sharp, formicating stinging or scalp, changing place when scratching ; < evenings, at rest ; > walking about.
Papulous eruption on scalp.

Sight and eyes

Eyes sunken and dim, have a weary look, and are surrounded by blue rings.
Dimness of vision and spots before eyes, especially on waking ; dim vision with headache.
Fog before eyes, was obliged to stop knitting in afternoon.
Sight : as if looking through dark blue glass ; like mist before eyes ; figures cannot be clearly distinguished.
Dimness of sight, with fiery sparks before eyes.
Flickering before eyes, as of various colors, glittering needles, visions of smoke or fog.
Burning in eyes and flickering of light on attempting to read in evening in bed.
Vision of colors before eyes, now yellow and again green, or fiery specks and sparks ; halo around light.
Muscæ volitantes.
Diplopia ; especially if dependent on convergent squint, arising from helminthiasis, convulsions, falls, etc.
Dilated pupils ; or contracted and dilated alternately.
Amblyopia after suppression of an eruption ; has never menstruated, though has much headache and vertigo at time menses ought to appear.
Hemiopia, only left half of object is visible.

Roaring, humming or ringing in ears,

Drawing pain in right internal ear ; hearing impaired.
Itching of ears, with increase of cerumen.

Smell and nose

Sense of smell diminished. θ Chronic coryza.
Dryness of nose, or fluent coryza (morning).
Frequent sneezing, with profuse discharge from nose, and loss of smell and taste ; various nervous symptoms of head and ears present ; itching in ears. θ Coryza.
Catarrh with excessive sneezing and rheumatic pains in head and ears.

Upper face

Pale face, eyes sunken, with blue rings ; great weakness ; anemic women.
Red face with headache.
Contraction of forehead.
Pimples soon filling with whitish-yellow lymph and then shrivelling.
Facial eruptions of children.

Lower face

Itching on lower jaw.
Sensation of numbness of upper lip or as of an induration.
Dry lips, without thirst.

Teeth and gums

Gums and lips pale. θ Dysmenorrhœa.
Tearing, stitching, boring in teeth (more right).
Dull jerking, especially at night, in arthritic patients.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste : flat ; offensive ; putrid ; fatty ; bitter.
Food tastes flat, or is almost tasteless.
Salty taste of all food.
Tongue coated yellowish-white ; white.
Fine stitches on tongue.
Tip of tongue red, with small burning blister thereon, impeding speech and chewing ; saliva increased.
Burning on tip of tongue (evening).

Inner mouth

Accumulation of watery saliva in mouth, pasty taste.
Saliva has a salty taste, which is communicated to all the food eaten.
Viscid mucus in mouth.
Heightened redness of mouth.

Palate and throat

Dryness of palate evenings, with thirst and hunger.
Tonsils and palate are shrivelled and white.
Scraping and dryness in pharynx, suffocative cough.
Dryness in throat.
Sensation of painful constriction in throat.
Burning and scraping in throat.
Nausea in throat.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Entire loss of appetite.
After eating but little, aversion to food, with nausea in throat.
No thirst all day, but it occurs in evening as face and hands become warm.
Thirst during night. θ Intermittent.
Thirstlessness.
Desire for lemonade.
Aversion : to bread and butter ; to beer ; to fatty things ; to ordinary food, and desire for inedible things.

Eating and drinking

Feeling of satiety after a few mouthfuls of food, the rest becomes repugnant and nauseates him ; nausea felt in throat and palate.
Complete loss of appetite, on taking a little beef-tea or a cup of tea, indescribable pain in scrobiculum cordis, which seldom went off until she threw up what she had taken ; melancholy, could not engage in any occupation.
After eating : nausea ; sleepiness ; hiccough, rumbling in bowels.
Pork disagrees.
Aggravation after coffee.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Violent hiccough.
While eating, and for some time afterwards, hiccough or hiccough-like eructations, particularly in pregnant women.
Eructations : with oppressive sensation in stomach ; frequent, sometimes sour tasting ; of food ; of a fatty taste.
Qualmish nausea after dinner and supper, and an uneasiness and qualmishness in epigastric region, as after eating too much fat.
Nausea : after eating or drinking, except from lemonade.
Nausea and fulness in chest, with unusual hunger.
Nausea and accumulation of water in mouth.
Vomiting : of watery mucus ; of food ; of greenish fluid ; of blood.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Uneasiness in stomach, with eructations, nausea and hiccough.

Hypochondria

Stitches in region of liver.
Ball-like distension in bowels, on right side below liver.

Abdomen and loins

Digestion retarded.
Tearing, piercing, through and through stitches in upper abdomen beneath stomach, on moving about.
Hypogastrium sensitive to pressure.
Full feeling and distension of abdomen.
Intestines painful to touch.
Abdomen sensitive to pressure and motion.
Pain and uneasiness in bowels in evening, with nausea ; > by motion.
Discomfort and nausea in lower abdomen.
Constant gnawing pain in bowels ; all food caused great discomfort and swelling, with frequent eructations ; debility, consequent upon lack of nourishment ; stools infrequent and hard, expelled with great effort. θ Enteralgia.
Painful restlessness in bed ; must get up and walk about for relief ; gurgling in intestines combined with malaise ; always > by moving about. θ Enteralgia.
Painful gurgling in intestines every night, with general malaise, > abstaining from food after noon and from walking about ; gnawing pains in the abdomen at 7 P. M., extending thence over whole body, > from walking till tired ; pale, herpetic face and red nose.
Rumbling of flatus.
Stitches in umbilical region.
Stitches, or pinching in abdomen ; cramp-like pains.
Running and crawling in bowels, as of something alive.
Paroxysms of colic coming on during night, especially after late supper ; > by getting up and walking about.
In left inguinal canal : stitches ; itching.

Stools and rectum

Urging to stool ; watery diarrhœa ; stool expelled forcibly.
Stool : odorless, brownish-yellow, mixed with some mucus.
Watery, papescent stool, with vomiting at night.
Diarrhœa renewed after every cup of coffee.
Diarrhœa of chlorotic women subject to sick headaches and menstrual irregularities.
Mucous diarrhœa ; in evening.
Constipation. θ Menstrual irregularities.
Frequent passage of hard stool (hard lumps).
Before stool : nausea ; pinching colic ; urging.
During stool : straining and burning in anus ; colic ; palpitation ; tenesmus.
After stool : ineffectual straining ; pinching in abdomen, dulness and forgetfulness.
Heat in rectum, with swelling of hemorrhoidal veins.
Pressure in rectum or anus ; tenesmus.
Drawing pressive pain in and about anus and perineum, as if a spot was suppurating ; when walking or sitting.

Urinary organs

Frequent micturition, with pressure on bladder and rectum.
Urine profuse, watery and frequent.
Frequent urination or fruitless desire to urinate.
Frequent copious emission of whitish urine.
Frequent urging, with scanty discharge ; also seldom and scanty.
Urine dark red, containing much flocculent matter ; acid ; iridescent cuticle.
Stitches in urethra with desire to urinate, followed by a sudden discharge of dark red-yellow urine.
Pricking at end of urethra while urinating.

Male sexual organs

Sexual desire diminished.
Erections at night, without exciting dreams.
Stitches in urethra.
Phymosis.
Prepuce and corona glandis feel sore, from slight rubbing.
Prostatic troubles, with stitches and pressure, urging to stool and micturition.

Female sexual organs

Menses : too profuse and frequent ; too early, black and clotted ; membranous.
Abdomen bloated and swollen before menses, with labor-like pains ; flow when established, black and clotted.
Menstruation too early, with some relief of melancholy mood and heaviness of feet.
Labor-like, constricting pains commencing in small of back and running down each side of abdomen to pubes ; attacks every few minutes, during which time no discharge occurs ; after the attacks, blood more watery ; vertigo ; headache ;
after cessation of menses, great soreness in abdomen. θ Dysmenorrhœa.
Menses troublesome for two months ; flow had continued all through each mouth ; discharge pale and watery, at first dark and clotted ; general appearance somewhat exsanguined ; mouth, tongue and lips pale ; she always felt best when moving about ; flow
almost ceased as long as she was moving about at work, but as soon as she sat down quietly in the evening, the flow reappeared and continued after she went to bed.
Menorrhagia, with stupefaction of head and vision obscured, as from a fog.
Menses suppressed or scanty, and painful ; dread of fresh air ; vertigo ; headache ; swollen eyelids ; pale face, lips and gums ; loss of appetite ; no thirst ; constipation ; palpitation ; constant chilliness ; disinclination to
move and to work ; constant drowsiness ; wants to be alone, and weeping does her no good.
No appearance of menses for 2 1/2 months, loss of former cheerfulness ; love of solitude ; offended at every trifle ; aversion to work ; sleeps late in morning ; face, lips and gums pale ; lids swollen ; tumultuous action of heart ; great
lassitude ; great anxiety ; sensation as if room was too small, with reluctance to going into open air ; solitude and weeping relieve ; in morning frequent pressing pain in forehead, with vertigo ; appetite poor ; stool tardy.
In a young woman of thirty who has never menstruated, every 3 to 4 weeks rush of blood to head, headache, pressing vertigo ; heaviness, frequent trembling of lower limbs, and pressure towards vulva.
Scanty or suppressed menstruation with headache and vertigo. θ Chlorosis.
Suppression of menses after excessive dancing or being overheated.
Menstrual irregularities, attended by megrim and blindness.
Leucorrhœa in blonde, leucophlegmatic subjects, with retarded or scanty menstruation ; chlorosis and anemia, fits of fainting and constant chilliness of whole body.
Before menses : melancholy ; straining and warmth in abdomen with sleeplessness.
During menses : improvement in temper and of the heaviness of the feet ; labor-like pains in back and abdomen ; headache ; vertigo ; darkness before eyes.

Loathing and nausea in mouth and throat.
Complaints after weaning.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Voice weak when reading aloud.
Tickling in larynx at night, with violent cough.
Much scraping in larynx, pain in fauces with violent and thick expectoration at night.

Respiration

Oppression of chest, with impeded breathing.
Breathing accelerated.

Cough

Violent cough, with tickling in larynx at night.
Violent cough at night, with much scraping in larynx, pain in fauces, and thick mucus.
Suffocative cough, caused by scraping and dryness in trachea.
Cough which was usually most violent during sleep, was never caused by talking, or walking, even against a cold wind.

Inner chest and lungs

Pressure in middle of sternum.
Sensation of great weakness in chest, as if there was not strength enough to breathe.
Stitches in left side of chest, later in right side.
Stitch about apex of heart.
Tearing stitches, with oppression and shortness of breath, during motion and rest.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Buzzing in region of heart. θ Chlorosis.
Palpitation, with a murmur ; severe headache and vertigo, great indolence. θ Chlorosis.
Tumultuous action of heart ; great lassitude ; frequent palpitation. θ Suppression of menses.
Sensation as of something alive, running in heart.
Stitches about apex of heart.
Pulse : double beat, very rapid ; scarcely perceptible.
Chlorosis, with paleness of skin and mucous surfaces ; clamminess of skin, flabbiness of muscles, great lassitude, severe headache and vertigo ; palpitation and venous murmurs.
Chlorosis from checked menstruation, with headache, dizziness and obscuration of sight.

Outer chest

Pressure in middle of sternum.
Contractive sensation of chest.
Sensation as if air streamed from nipples.
Mamma swollen ; tension and stitches therein ; hard and painful ; discharge of milky fluid, staining the linen.

Neck and back

Stiffness of neck, with laming pain.
Drawing rheumatic pain in left side of neck.
Twinges up back > by drawing the shoulders backwards, < by the reverse.
Deep penetrating dull stitches in region of right kidney, < during inhalation.
Pain in small of back, ceases when rising from a seat.

Upper limbs

Tearing terminating in a stitch, over scapulæ, with laming pain in arms.
Itching on shoulders and in axilla.
Laming hard pressure in right arm, as if in periosteum and deep seated muscles ; extending to fingers, impedes writing.
Bruised pain above elbow-joint, outside, < from motion of arm and touch.
Tearing pain in elbow and wrist-joints.
Painful drawings in inner surface of ulna and in wrist.
Feels as if she must let fall that which is in hands.
Cramp-like slow contraction of right thumb and index finger, tips approach each other and can only be extended by force.
Numbness in right hand.
Fine prickling between fingers, ceasing after scratching.
Red blisters, preceded by severe itching on ring and little fingers, left hand.
Distension of veins on dorsum of hand.
Writer's spasm, cannot open thumb and index-finger.

Lower limbs

Rheumatic drawing in left gluteus maximus near spine, while sitting ; ceases when standing.
Cramp-like pain on right thigh above popliteal space.
Drawing pain in flexors of leg, seeming to start from hollow of knee and draw to tips of toes.
Itching on right calf, with swelling of bloodvessels.
Pain in bottom of foot, as if sprained, more at heel.
Burning sore pain in heels, when walking in open air ; also when standing or sitting.
After walking, toes feel dead.
Sensation in left foot as if sprained.
Feet and toes frost-bitten, looking red.

Limbs in general

Hyperesthesia of extremities, with hysterical vertigo.
Slight tremor in all the joints.
Limbs feel as if their mobility were impaired.
Muscles have a doughy feeling and are powerless. θ Chlorosis.
Drawing and pressure in muscles and bones.
Pressing, drawing in periosteum where skin covers bones.

Rest. position. motion

Rest : headache < ; burning in œsophagus < ; pain in stomach < ; tearing stitches in chest ; aggravation of pains ; great desire for.

Lying down : vertigo ; dyspepsia ; on back or painful side <.

Tissues

Acts upon the cerebro-spinal system, affecting sensorium, eyes, gastrointestinal canal, and more especially the female sexual organs.
Pressive, drawing or tearing pains at parts where bones lie near surface.

Skin

Itching, leaving a numb sensation.
Itching, pricking, < at night, in bed ; > by scratching, but re-appearing at once at another place.
Pressing, drawing pains, where the skin covers bones.
Papulous, scurfy or pricking eruptions.
Bright red spots, like burns, on thighs.
Painless eruptions.
Scars from varicella, which have nearly disappeared, become dark red, and the forehead is covered with similar spots.

Phlegmatic temperament.
Suitable for blonde leuco-phlegmatic subjects with chlorotic condition ; disinclination for any kind of labor, easily fatigued ; special senses enfeebled or with functions suspended.
Patient pale, chlorotic, with disturbed menstrual function, accompanied by vertigo and headache.

Remarks

Aversion to motion, yet motion ameliorates her pain and uneasiness. Aversion to the open air, yet open air ameliorates some symptoms especially the coryza and cough.

The marked dullness of the senses and special senses is a striking part of this picture.

Chlorosis; irregular menses; and palpitation. Stitching pains.

Weakness and aggravation from exertion. Flabby muscles.

Most symptoms ameliorated by walking. Very restless at night.

Great lassitude.

Weakness in the evening, ameliorated by moving about. Sensitive to cold, and cold air.

Complaints from being overheated.

Alternations of moods is a striking feature of the mental state. Great flow of ideas alternates with weak memory.

Joyous feeling alternating with irritability.

Serene humor changes suddenly into seriousness or peevishness. Grief and fear keep her in continuous mental agitation.

Dullness of mind prevents mental labor.

Absorbed in thought seeks solitude; thinks about the future. Answers incoherently, confusion of mind.

Aversion to work, and dread of open air.

Wants to remain in a warm room, and. in solitude.

Remains a long time silent. Excitement with trembling.

Sadness, as if she had wronged somebody (Aur.).

Tearful and meditates upon her grief, which is only imaginary.

Thinks she is alone in the world and persecuted by every one ( China).

Obstinate and censorious. She grows steadily weaker; fainting spells come on; she becomes pale and anemic.

These symptoms are important if associated with scanty menses or amenorrhoea.

Vertigo when walking in the open air; objects turn in a circle; ameliorated in a room, and when sitting. Everything turns dark before the eyes, and she falls as if fainting.

Head

The pain in the head is stunning, and makes her fear she will lose her senses. Boring, darting, pressing in forehead and temples. Violent pains in the forehead.

Pains worse lying on painful side or back. Pains one-sided. Pain morning and evening, ameliorated by vomiting; worse by motion and in open air. Obscure vision with the pains. Pressure in vertex, as if brain were enveloped in a cloth, which would deprive him of his senses.

Headache with flickering before the eyes on rising in the morning. Pulsating in the head. Rush of blood to the head; anxiety and confusion of mind; obscuration of vision; vertigo; general coldness, after dinner. Headache ameliorated by cold applications. Headaches from disordered stomach. Head feels as if he had on a skull cap. Tearing pains in the scalp.

Senses

In the field of vision there are spots, fog, bluish colors, Flickerings, glittering objects; various colors - now yellow, and again green; fiery sparks, smoke; halo around the light, black specks or flies.

Dimness of vision. Diplopia. Convergent strabismus. Dilated pupils. Hemiopia. Heat and burning. Lids oedematous. Swelling of tipper lids, Dryness and itching of lids. Dim vision during headache. Impaired vision, smell, hearing and taste.

Dullness of hearing. Humming, ringing and roaring in the ears. Drawing pains.

Sense of smell diminished. Dryness in the nose. Dry, or fluent coryza, worse in a warm room, better in the open air or cool room. Sneezing and watery discharge in a warm room, entirely relieved in the open air. Walking in the cold open air is his most comfortable pastime. Pressing pain over nasal bone during coryza. Takes cold from being overheated and from overheated rooms.

Pale, sickly face; dark under the eyes in woman. Contracted forehead - a frown.

Dry lips. Numbness of upper lip.

Boring, stitching, tearing in the teeth. Jerking in the teeth at night. Taste is lost, or perverted; flat; bad; putrid; rancid; all food tastes too salty.

Tongue white, or yellowish. Burning blisters on tongue.

Saliva increased. Burning, tip of tongue. Saliva tastes salty. Viscid mucus in the mouth.

Burning, dryness and scraping in the throat.

Loss of appetite and even aversion to food. Thirstless, except in the evening during fever. Desires lemonade ( Nit. ac., Bell., Sab.).

Aversion to bread and butter, and fatty things; but desires inedible things.

Disgust for meat; craves sardines. Satiety after the first mouthful (Lyc.) and then he loathes food.

Stomach weak. Nausea after eating. Pork disagrees. The stomach symptoms are much like Pulsatilla. Symptoms worse after coffee. Vomiting after eating.

Vomiting in the morning. Vomiting watery mucus. Eructations. Aching in the stomach and burning in oesophagus, better by walking about. Fullness, as if he had eaten too much. Weight in the stomach after eating. Stitching pains in the stomach.

Abdomen

Colicky pains in the abdomen, ameliorated by walking about. Tenderness all over the abdomen, even hypogastrium. Gnawing pains in the evening. Gnawing pains after food. Rumbling and gurgling in the abdomen. Paroxysmal cramps during the night, ameliorated by walking about. Stitching pains in the abdomen and liver.

Diarrhoea after coffee. Diarrhoea in chlorotic women subject to sick headaches and menstrual irregularities. Watery, forcible stool, odorless, brownish, yellow. Diarrhoea in the evening. Constipation; stool hard. Nausea. Colic before stool. Colic and urging after stool. Hemorrhoids that bleed. Drawing, pressing pain about the anus, as if a spot would suppurate.

Urines

Frequent urging to urinate. Ineffectual urging to urinate. Urine profuse, watery. Floculent sediment; iridescent cuticle. Stitching in the urethra with desire to urinate.

In the male the sexual desire is diminished. Irritable prostate gland, with stitching pains; urging to stool and urine ( Nux).

Menses too soon, or too late; irregular, or suppressed; copious, prolonged, or scanty. When profuse, the mental symptoms are better. Flow black and clotted. Labor-like pains at the menstrual period, commencing in small of back and running down each side of the pubes.

Uterine haemorrhage. Dread of open air. Menses suppressed, palpitation of the heart, weeping, aversion to company and dread of open air. Rush of blood to the head, and scanty flow.

Suppressed menses from over-exertion, or being overheated. Faint, ing at the menstrual period. After menses, milk in mammae. Complaints after weaning ( China).

Much scraping in the Larynx at night, thick, white mucus. Tickling in the larynx and trachea. Oppression of chest. Suffocative cough, caused by scraping and dryness in the trachea.

Cough comes on during sleep, from dryness and constriction of larynx. Cough ameliorated in the open air, even in a cold wind.

Pressure in the middle of the sternum. Weakness in the chest. Stitching in the chest and heart. Tearing, stitching, and shortness of breath during motion and rest.

Palpitation and anaemic murmurs. Tumultuous action of the heart; great lassitude. Weak pulse. Sensation as if air streamed from nipples. Mammae swollen, containing milk in non-pregnant women. Mammae swollen and very hard after menses.

Drawing pains in the neck, with stiffness. Twinges up the back, ameliorated by drawing the shoulders back. Stitching in the region of the right kidney, worse during inhalation. Pain in the small of the back while sitting, ceases on rising.

Tearing, drawing pains in the limbs. Hyperesthesia of the skin. Flabby muscles. Tearing, drawing in the upper limbs. Sensation of weakness of the hands, as if she must let fall what she holds in her hands. Writer's cramp.

Drawing pains in flexors of the leg. Burning sore pain in heels. Toes feel dead after walking. Weakness in the limbs.

Sleep not restful, disturbed by anxious dreams; frightful, vivid dreams, Restless sleep. Late falling asleep. Wakens early, but wants to sleep late. Nightmare. Wakens early, but too tired and sleepy, cannot rise. Pollutions in dreams.

Chill, fever and sweat. Chill not ameliorated by warm clothing. Chilliness during menses. Chill forenoon or evening. Chill predominates in the evening. Heat of face follows chill. Chill and heat alternate.

Sensation of heat through whole body, particularly in face and hands. Heat, with swelling of the veins ( China). General heat after eating. Sweat at night during sleep, offensive, Sweat sometimes on lower part of body.

Itching at night in bed. Numbness after scratching, or changing places by scratching.

Characteristic

Best suited for leuco-phlegmatic persons with anæmic or chlorotic conditions; easily fatigued, and in consequence not inclined to any kind of labor; feeble or sus- pended functions of organs or special senses.

Pale, chlorotic, deranged menses (Fer., Puls.), accompanied by vertigo, headache, dim vision.

Pains; pressive, drawing or tearing of parts where bones lie near the surface.

Ailments: from suppressed grief and terrors of conscience; from duty not done or bad act committed.

Great sadness and peevishness; irritable, morose, ill-humored; inclined to weep; desire for solitude; aversion to open air (rev. of Puls.).

Headache in anæmic patients, with flickering before eyes or dim vision, on rising in morning.

Flickering before eyes, fiery sparks, as of various colors, glittering needles; dim vision of fog or smoke.

Satiety after a few mouthfuls (Lyc.), food then becomes repugnant, causes nausea in throat and palate.

Saliva and all food has a salty taste.

Menses: too early; too profuse, black and clotted (too late, pale, scanty, Puls.); membranous; better during flow (worse during, Act., Puls.).

Burning sore pain in heels, when sitting, standing or walking in open air (Agar., Caust., Phyt., Val.).

Open air; cold water; cold bathing; menses < sitting and lying at night; fat food.

Chill

Begins in tips of fingers, toes and ears. Chilliness, general, not > by covering. Evening chill, very sensitive to cold air and uncovering. Chill forenoon and evening.

Heat and chill alternately; without thirst; with very cold hands.

Heat: of single parts (except face); after eating; of whole body; with swelling of veins of hands.

Heat, principally of face, without thirst; hands remain cold a long time.

Heat: of various parts of face and hands, with swelling of veins of hands; after heating. general.

Sweat

At night, in sleep, offensive; sometimes only on lower part of body.

Analysis

Especially to be thought of for the fevers of the anæmic during the puerperal state or early months of lactation. The constitutional symptoms are guiding.
