Always think of this remedy on seeing dark, stringy blood; e.g., in epistaxis, where there are strings of dark blood hanging down from the nose; also in uterine hæmorrhage or hæmoptysis where the blood is dark and string-like, or on raising a clot of the blood, long strings droop from it.

Sexual

Female: Greatly used in female complaints. Sensation of something living and moving in the abdomen; abdomen swollen. (The last two symptoms are common to either sex; but when occurring in females, as they often do at the change of life and at other times, they may lead to the erroneous idea of pregnancy.) Threatened abortion, especially where there is a hæmorrhage of dark, stringy blood. Menstrual blood dark, viscid.

Sensations

Heartburn. Sensation of fatigue; as of something living (large in size) in inner parts; of motion in inner parts; as if single parts were gone to sleep; of qualmishness.

Generalities

Symptoms generally appear on the left side. Mist before the eyes: Epistaxis; dark, stringy blood from the nose; mucous blood from the same. Cough with bloody (dark) expectoration. Desire for open air. Yawning in general, drowsiness; somnolency; sleepiness in daytime generally.

Worse

In the morning; fasting before breakfast; affections of females particularly; looking fixedly at an object (can't even thread a needle); during pregnancy; in the house.

Better

Is a remedy often useful in hæmorrhages that are black and stringy. Tingling in various parts. Chorea and hysterical affections. Frequent and extreme changes in sensations and mental conditions. Mind

Vacillating; pleasant mania; sings and laughs. Happy and affectionate; then angry. Sudden changes from hilarity to melancholy. Vivid recollection from music heard (Lyc).

Head

Throbs, pulsates, during climacteric; worse during menses.

Eyes

Appearance as of electric sparks. Must wipe eyes as if mucus or water were in them. Feeling in eyes as after violent weeping. Sensation as if she had been looking through too sharp spectacles. Obstinate constipation due to portal stagnation. Constipation in infants. Crawling and stitches in anus. Sensation of something alive in abdomen, stomach, etc., especially on left side (Calend). Abdomen swollen, feeling of something heavy.

Female

Threatened abortion, especially when hæmorrhage is dark and stringy. Urging of blood to genitals. Menses dark, viscid, too frequent and copious, black and slimy. Uterine hæmorrhage; clots with long strings; worse from least movement. Jerking pain in interior of left breast, as if drawn toward back by means of thread (Crot tig). A bounding feeling, as if something alive in right breast.

Respiratory

Wheezy cough, with frothy expectoration, containing threads like fine twine; worse, lying down. Breath has offensive, sickly smell. Feeling as if the uvula is elongated in hysterical patients.

Back

Sudden feeling of coldness in back as if cold water were thrown over him; icy-cold extremities.

Extremities

Spasmodic contractions and twitchings of single set of muscles. Chorea and hysteria, with great alterations of feeling. Whole upper extremity fall asleep. Cracking in hip-joint and knees. Weakness in knees and legs. Pain in ankles and soles.

Modalities

Worse, lying down, hot weather, warm room, in morning, fasting, before breakfast, looking fixedly at an object. Better, in open air.

Antidote: Opium; Bell.

This remedy has three different spheres of usefulness in homœopathic therapeutics.

1st. In hæmorrhages from different parts. The blood is black, viscid, clotted, and forming itself into long black strings from the bleeding orifice. It makes no difference whether from the nose, uterus, lungs or stomach, if the blood is of this nature Crocus must be given. (Mercur. sol., the blood hangs from the nose like an icicle).

2d. In hysterical conditions in which there is great changeableness of the mental symptoms.

The patient is alternately cheerful or depressed. In the former state she will sing, dance, jump, laugh and whistle, love and want to kiss everybody. In the latter she will cry, get into a rage, abuse her friends, and then repent it, etc.

Crocus, for these alternate mental states, resembles Aconite, Ignatia and Nux moschata, but with Crocus there is another peculiar and persistent symptom, viz., sensation as of something morning, or hopping about in the stomach, abdomen, uterus or chest. Often this sensation of movement is so positive that the patient mistakes it for the movement of a fœtus, and is sure she is in a family way. If the mind symptoms above described are present, don't be too ready to promise a baby, but give a dose of Crocus and await developments.

3d. Crocus is one of our remedies for chronic affections. There are twitchings of single sets of muscles (Ignatia and Zinc.), twitchings of eyelids especially. These twitchings are very common in hysterical subjects, and there are many remedies for them, so that one could not of course prescribe on that alone. There are, however, remedies which are suited to hysteria and also other nervous disease, in which twitchings are very prominent and Crocus is one of them.

Mind and Disposition

Gaiety ; uncommon mirth and cheerfulness ; witty ; joking loquacious. Sings involuntarily, and then laughs. Immoderate, improper laughter ; changeable disposition.

Head

Vertigo when raising the head, with heat of the whole body. Great forgetfulness ; loses his ideas when he undertakes to write them down. Giddiness, as if intoxicated, in the forehead ; in the room, but not in the open air. Giddiness, with fainting. Pulsating pains in one side of the head (left), extending into the eye. Pain in the forehead in the evening by candle-light, with burning and pressure in the eyes. Sudden shock in the forehead and temples. Sensation, when moving the head, as if the brain were loose, and were tottering to and fro.

Eyes

Twitching of the eyelids ; twitching and itching of the upper eyelids. Nightly spasms of the lids. Inclination to wink and to wipe the eyes, as if a pellicle of gum were drawn over them. When reading (in the evening) sees as through a gauze. Dilatation of the pupils. When reading, the white paper is pale-red. Sudden flashes before the eyes like electric sparks (during the day). A quantity of tears rush from the dim eyes as soon as he begins to read. Lachrymation in the room ; not in the open air. Heating and lancinating pains in the eyes after surgical operations.

Ears

Humming and roaring in the ears, with hardness of hearing ; worse on stooping.

Nose

Discharge from the nose (one nostril at a time) of tenacious, thick, dark-black blood, with cold perspiration on the forehead.

Face

Livid complexion. Circumscribed, burning red spots in the face. Alternate redness and paleness of the face. Red, hot face. Lips cracked.

Mouth and Throat

White-coated tongue (better after breakfast) ; the papillæ are very much erect. Unusual warmth in the mouth. Scraping in the throat in the evening before and after, but not during the time he takes his food. Sensation in the œsophagus as from a plug. Sensation as if the uvula had been elongated, during and after deglutition.

Stomach and Abdomen

Thirst in the evening. Nausea, disappearing in the open air. Heartburn after eating. Bloated abdomen. Sensation as if something living were hopping about in the stomach, abdomen, pit of the stomach (arms and other parts of the body). Distention of the stomach and abdomen (the stomach feels distended in the morning before eating anything). Sensation of heaviness in the abdomen, with pressing towards the uterus.

Stool and Anus

Creeping in the anus, as from ascarides. Stitches and itching at the anus (stitch extending from the anus through the small of the back into the left groin, increasing during an inspiration).

Genitals

Men. Excitement of the sexual desire. Women. Menstruation too early and too profuse. Hæmorrhage from the uterus (during the least movement) ; blood viscid, black, smelling badly (miscarriage third month).

Respiratory Organs

Oppression of the chest, with the desire to draw a long breath ; relieved by yawning. Disagreeably-smelling breath. Violent, dry cough, from irritation in the pharynx ; relieved by pressing with the hand on the pit of the stomach. Cough, with spitting of blood. Great feeling of emptiness in the pit of the stomach. Sensation as if something living were hopping in the chest.

Back

Sensation of coldness in the back. Swelling of the neck.

Extremities

Upper. In the shoulder-joint sensation as if the head of the humerus were loose ; cracking. Sensation as if the arms and hands were gone to sleep. The arms (forearm) feel heavy, as if bruised. Burning-tingling and tension in the tips of the fingers. Chilblains on the hands and fingers. Lower. Violent cracking of the hip-joint of the knee-joint (when stooping). Great sensation of weariness in the knee-joints and lower legs. Chilblains on the toes. The soles of the feet ache from standing.

Sleep

Continuous yawning and desire to sleep. Sleepiness after each meal ; somnolency. Sings while sleeping.

Generalities

Sensation as if something living were hopping and jumping in the body. Tingling in different parts of the body. Hæmorrhages from various organs (blood black, viscid). St. Vitus' dance (every seven days, with singing, dancing, laughing and singing). Some limbs go to sleep (at night).

Fever

Pulse accelerated ; feverish. Chill in the afternoon, growing worse in the evening, with chilliness extending from the back into the legs, with trembling. During the chill (and heat), thirst. Chilliness ; only the back part of the body. Flushes of internal heat, with pricking and tingling of the skin. Heat, mostly of the head and face, with paleness of the cheeks and thirst. Perspiration very little, and only at night ; cold and debilitating. Perspiration only on the lower part of the body.

Skin

Scarlet redness of the whole body. Painful suppuration of bruised parts (old cicatrized wounds ; open again, and suppurate). Chilblains.

Conditions

Especially suitable for women. Frequent and great changes in the sensations ; the feelings changing suddenly from the greatest hilarity to the deepest despondency. Aggravation, in the morning early (while fasting), (lassitude, debility). Amelioration, in the cool, open air.

Characteristics

Crocus has three characteristics which clearly call for its use when met with. The first is hæmorrhage from various parts (nose, uterus, &c.), when the blood is black, viscid, clotting, forming itself into long black strings, hanging from the bleeding orifice. The second is a peculiar sensation as if something alive were moving about in the abdomen or chest. This may be a definite sensation, or it may be a hallucination or fixed idea. A curious circumstance in this connection is the fact that Crocus has often been successfully given to pregnant women who have complained of violent fœtal movements, as well as in cases of imaginary pregnancy. The remaining characteristic is in the mental sphere. It is a rapid alternation of mental conditions: anger with violence rapidly followed by repentance; laughter quickly followed by tears. I once cured with a few doses of Crocus a young artist who had become subject to violent outbursts of rage in which he would take up a knife to throw at his mother, with whom he lived, and almost immediately after would be abjectly repentant. The household was on the point of being broken up when the trouble was completely removed by Crocus . Uncontrollable laughter is also in the Crocus symptomatology. Hysterical laughter is one of the effects observed by the older physicians. Teste cites from Murray the case of several children "who were seized with an extraordinary laughing mania, from having smelled of leather bottles that had contained essence of saffron." On one occasion, in hospital, I happened to see a young girl who was really desperately ill with heart failure and valvular disease, in a fit of hysterical laughter. This made me think of Crocus . The only definite sensation she complained of in the heart region was a "jumping" sensation. Crocus 30 was given, and very soon she was able to lie down flat (after having been propped up for weeks), and from that time she made a rapid recovery. Another Crocus symptom is: Sensitive to music, involuntarily joins in on hearing any one sing. Stitches, shocks, throbbings, broad thrusts, cuttings and jerkings are among the commoner sensations. Twitchings of single sets of muscles (chorea). A warm sensation ascending to the heart, impeding breathing and > by yawning is a peculiar symptom. Tingling, crawling, pricking and itching are met with in the skin. Scarlet redness of the whole body, or scarlet spots on skin. (It is a domestic remedy for "bringing out" the eruption of measles.) Painful suppuration of bruised parts; old cicatrised wounds re-open and suppurate. Lipoma and encephaloma of scalp. Tumours with ulceration and characteristic bleeding. The reputation of Crocus in the cure of tumours is also an old one. It was used externally "to scatter indolent tumours and ecchymoses." Cooper has given it new confirmation. He has given it in single doses of the Ø tincture in a case of malignant disease of the side following extirpation of cancerous kidney, with the result of arrest of progress after an initial aggravation, and complete relief of pain. The patient was a woman, who had formerly had hæmorrhage with dark clots at the periods and feeling of weight towards womb. She had had also the sensation of something moving in the abdomen. Cooper agrees with Culpepper in thinking Croc . very similar to Calend . in its action. It is a vulnerary and corresponds to the effects of blows (deafness; tumours, &c.). Crocus is especially suited to women and hysterical men. The symptoms are < fasting; evening and night; during new and full moon; looking fixedly at an object; during pregnancy; in a hot room; in hot weather. > By yawning (desire to take a long breath, > by yawning); in open air (for which there is craving); after breakfast. Great thirst for cold drinks.

Relations

Crocus should be studied along with the other Iridaceæ, the Alliaceæ and the Liliaceæ. It is antidoted by: Acon., Bell., Op. Compatible: Chi., Nux, Puls., Sul. Compare: Plat. in dark or black clotted flow; Croton (pain through left chest to back); Staph. ( > by yawning); Fluor. ac. (sensation of cold wind blowing across eyes); Codein (twitching of muscles, especially of eyeballs); Lach. (pains in eye to top of head); Tarent. (contractions of single groups of muscles); Calc., Ipec., Ign. Tarent. (hysteria hearing music wants to join in. ─ In Tarent. music subsequently > in Croc. it does not). Mind

Head

Stupefying cephalalgia, as during intoxication, with downcast eyes. ─ Giddiness, as if intoxicated, in the forehead; in the room, but not in the open air. ─ Vertigo, with fainting. ─ Confused vertigo on rising from a reclining posture. ─ Vertigo when raising the head, with heat of the whole body. ─ Cephalalgia above the eyes, with burning pain, sensation of burning and aching in the eyes, esp. in the evening, by candle-light. ─ Head heavy in the morning, with aching at the vertex. ─ Drawing pain in the forehead, with nausea. ─ Semi-lateral pulsation in the head, and in the face (l. side, extending into the eye). ─ Blows in the forehead and the temples. ─ Sensation of looseness of the brain, during movement (as if it were tottering to and fro).

Eyes

Mouth

Scraping and roughness in the mouth. ─ Accumulation of water in the mouth. ─ Tongue moist, and charged with a white coating, with erection of the papillæ. ─ Unusual warmth in the mouth.

Throat

Appetite

Stomach

Chest

Heart

Sensation of heat, which ascends to the heart, with anxiety and difficulty of respiration, mitigated by yawnings. ─ Sensation of heaviness at the heart. ─ Sensation of great emptiness in precordial region. ─ Drawing in precordial region extending to stomach. ─ Stitches beneath heart, < on inspiration. ─ Frequent palpitation. ─ Anxiety at heart, with sense of weakness extending thence through abdomen to soles of feet.

Neck and Back

Sensation of stiffness in the neck during movement. ─ External swelling of the neck. ─ Pulling in the loins, with pains in the groins. ─ Sensation of coldness in the back.

Upper Limbs

Pain in the shoulder-joint, on moving the arms, as if it were out of joint, or on the point of being dislocated; cracking. ─ Numbness of the arms and of the hands, with immobility, esp. at night, during sleep. ─ Digging pulling in the forearms. ─ Heaviness and pain, as from a bruise in the forearms, after any slight movement of them. ─ Burning pricking, and tension in the tips of the fingers, as from stagnation of the blood, after a walk in the open air. ─ Chilblains in the hands, and in the fingers.

Lower Limbs

Sensation of weakness in the thighs, when seated. ─ Violent cracking of the hip-joint, of the knee-joint (when stooping). ─ Nocturnal tearing in the leg, with uneasiness in that part. ─ Pain, as from a bruise, in the calves of the legs. ─ Fatigue in the soles of the feet (from standing), with burning pain and tingling. ─ Chilblains on the toes.

Generalities

Movements, as of something alive (hopping and jumping) in various parts of the body. ─ Tingling in different parts of the body. ─ Convulsive attacks, like chorea (every seven days), with laughter, dancing and leaping, alternately with violent paroxysms of whooping-cough. ─ Sensation of relaxation and bending in the joints. ─ Numbness of some of the limbs, at night, during sleep. ─ Amelioration of symptoms in the open air; several of them appear at night , and are generally aggravated in the morning . ─ Ebullition of blood, sometimes throughout the body. ─ Discharge of a black viscid blood from different organs. ─ Epistaxis. ─ Dark stringy blood from the nose; mucous blood from the same. ─ Cough with bloody (dark) expectoration. ─ Heaviness and failing of the limbs, after light exercise. ─ Striking alternation of the most opposite, physical, and mental symptoms. ─ Symptoms generally appear on the l. side. ─ Excessive general weakness, with fainting fits, during movement. ─ Desire for open air. ─ Great depression in the morning. ─ Trembling of all the limbs.

Sleep

Continuous yawning and desire to sleep. ─ Great inclination to sleep in the day, esp. after a meal, sometimes in the evening. ─ Sings while sleeping. ─ Drowsiness, with eyes dull and glassy. ─ Cries, and starts, while sleeping. ─ Frightful, or gay and pleasant dreams.

Fever

Pulse accelerated; feverish. ─ Chill in the afternoon, growing worse in the evening, with chilliness extending from the back into the legs, with trembling. ─ During the chill (and heat), thirst. ─ Chilliness, only of the back part of the body. ─ Flushes of internal heat, with pricking and tingling of the skin. ─ Heat, mostly of the head and face, with paleness of the cheeks and thirst. ─ Perspiration very little, and only at night; cold and debilitating. ─ Perspiration only on the lower part of the body.

Pulsating pains in left side of head extending into eye.
Sudden cold sensation on left parietal bone, as if a drop of cold water had fallen on it.
When moving head, sensation as if brain was loose.
Congestion of head ; violent throbbing.
Nervous or menstrual headache.

Pupils much dilated.

A few moments' use of eyes causes feeling in them as if room was filled with smoke ; feeling of dryness and burning, very soon succeeded by lachrymation ; pressure on closed lids relieves somewhat.
Feeling in eyes as if she had been violently weeping, with corresponding appearance of weeping ; beginning in left and extending to right eye ; feeling of something alive and moving in abdomen (r. side). θ Conjunctivitis.
Feeling as though water was constantly coming into eyes, only in room.
Sensation as if she had been looking through too sharp spectacles.

Ophthalmia menstrual in patients of a sanguine temperament, subject to attacks of congestion and inclination to spasms (hysterical) at climacteric period.
Extreme photophobia and most copious lachrymation ; impossible to read without a torrent of tears inundating eyes, so that light gets confused and veiled.
Lachrymation in room ; not in open air.
Constant winking, with tearful suffusion of eyes.

Humming and roaring in ears, causing impairment of hearing, < when stooping.

Smell and nose

Mild pressure in forehead precedes attack of nosebleed ; he is very anxious, believing that he will die, constant coldness of hands and feet ; towards evening, congestion of blood to head, with warmth of face, quivering in left eyelid, sour taste in
mouth, pulse full and quick.
Epistaxis of very tenacious, thick, black blood, every drop drawn into a thread, with cold sweat in large drops on forehead.
Violent sneezing ; coryza with stringy mucus.
Bloody mucus, or dark, stringy blood from nose.

Upper face

Yellowish, sallow color of face. θ Epistaxis. θ Metrorrhagia.
Livid complexion, or circumscribed, burning red spots.
Red, hot face, or alternate redness and paleness.
Redness and heat of face, with congestion to head. θ Cerebral disturbance.

Lower face

Lips cracked.

Taste, speech, tongue

Excessive thirst for cold drinks ; thirst in evening.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Scrobiculum and stomach

Great feeling of emptiness in pit of stomach.
Distension of stomach and abdomen.
Sensation of fermentation in stomach, or of motion upward and downward, hither and thither.

Obstinate constipation caused by stagnation in portal system ; costiveness of newborn children when based on venous disturbances.

Sensitive, dull, long stitch near left side of anus, from time to time.
Stitches and itching at anus ; stitch extending from anus through small of back into left groin, < during an inspiration.
Crawling in anus, as from thread worms.
Intolerable writhing in anus affecting whole nervous system painfully.

Male sexual organs

Excitement of sexual desire.

Female sexual organs

Sensation as if menses would appear, with colic and pressing towards genitals.
Menstruation too early and too profuse.
Uterine flow during new or full moon.
Menses profuse and lasting too long, but come at proper time ; blood dark, clotted, stringy, viscid.
Dysmenorrhœa, with dark, stringy blood ; sensation of commotion in stomach upward and downward, hither and thither, during painful menstruation.
After non-appearance of menses for ten weeks, sudden severe bearing down pains in abdomen and small of back with severe hemorrhage ; blood flowing in large, black, coagulated masses from uterus, greatly exhausting patient.
Menses suppressed ; sensation of rolling or tumbling in abdomen.
After dancing or a long walk during catamenia, with or without pain, when there is a discharge of dark, stringy blood ; it comes away in dark or black strings ; sense of rolling or bounding in stomach or abdomen ; violent cephalic throbbing.
Nervous excitement ; palpitation of heart ; fearfulness.
Metrorrhagia of dark, viscid, stringy blood, in black clots, or after overheating, straining or lifting, also after abortion or delivery ; < from slightest motion.
Daily discharge of bright red blood, viscid, slimy, coagulated, with vertigo, pains in head, stitches in both sides under false ribs, frequent palpitation ; small and frequent pulse, pains in back and great exhaustion.
Leucorrhœa with paroxysms of acute stitches from pudendum to right thigh, as if a knife was suddenly thrust into these parts every now and then, gradually penetrating into the parts and with increasing pain.

Imaginary pregnancy.
Motions of child are felt too violently, and are painful.
Threatened abortion, especially when there is a hemorrhage of dark, stringy blood ; miscarriage third month.
Quarter of an hour after delivery, placenta still remaining, blood in large clots ; womb dilated, soft ; fainting ; pale as death ; pulseless, extremities cold as ice. θ Post-partum

Lochia dark, stringy ; abdomen distended.
Discharge composed of black strings ; as fast as blood flows from vulva it is formed into black, string-like masses.
Offensive smelling uterine hemorrhage ; or when the patient, in consequence of long-continued hemorrhage, has fallen into a state of nervous erethism.

Respiration

Oppression of chest, with desire to draw a long breath, > by yawning.
Offensive, sickly odor of breath.

Cough

Violent attack of exhausting dry cough, relieved by laying hand on pit of stomach.

Inner chest and lungs

Heaviness of chest, must frequently take a deep breath.

Jumping, as if from something living in lower portion of right chest, as if beneath the ribs.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Anxious palpitation of heart. θ Uterine hemorrhage.
Palpitation of heart on going up-stairs ; great debility.
Pulse : feverish, accelerated ; full and quick (epistaxis) ; slow, scarcely 60 (cerebral disturbance) ; weak and intermitting, hardly accelerated (metrorrhagia) ; pulseless.

Outer chest

Peculiar jerking pain in interior of left breast, as if drawn towards the back by means of a thread.

General

Frequent and extreme changes in sensations; sudden, from the greatest hilarity to the deepest despondency (Ign., Nux m.).

Excessively happy, affectionate, wants to kiss everybody; the next moment in a rage.

Hemorrhage from any part, blood black, viscid, clotted, forming into long black strings hanging from the bleeding surface (Elaps).

Headache: during climacteric, throbbing, pulsating, < during two or three days of accustomed menstrual flow; nervous or menstrual headache before, during or after the flow (Lach., Lil., Sep.).

Eyes: sensation, as if room were filled with smoke; as if had been weeping; as of cold wind blowing across the eyes; closing lids tightly gives >.

Nosebleed: black, tenacious, stringy, every drop can be turned into a thread; with cold sweat in large drops on forehead (cold sweat, but wants to be fanned; with bright red blood, Carbo v.); in children who develop too rapidly (Cal., Phos.).

Dysmenorrhœa: flow black, stringy, clotted (Ust.).

Sensation as if something alive were moving in the stomach, abdomen, uterus, arms or other parts of the body (Sab., Thuja, Sul.); with nausea and faintness.

Chorea and hysteria with great hilarity, singing and dancing (Tar.); alternating with melancholy and rage.

Spasmodic contractions and twitchings of single sets of muscles (Agar., Ign., Zinc.).

Relations

Nux, Puls. or Sul. follows Crocus well in nearly all complaints; in menstrual derangements (Ust.).

Compare: Tub., Staph., which have many symptoms in common.

Aggravation

Motion (hemorrhage).

Amelioration

Open air (all symptoms).

Time

Afternoon; < towards evening.

Chill

With thirst (Dul.); in the afternoon, increasing towards evening; with shivering from the back down the legs (Dul., Staph.); < by drinking.

Heat

With thirst (Staph.); internal flushes with pricking and crawling in the skin; of head and face, with pale cheeks. Violent heat over whole body, < in the head, with intense redness of face and distension of blood vessels (Cinch., Cham.); great thirst without much dryness of mouth.

Sweat

Scanty; only on lower half of body; or only at night, then cold and debilitating.

“Croc., Dul. and Staph. may be compared.

All have chill beginning in back.

Croc. and Dul. have thirst with chill, Staph. has not.

Croc. and Staph. have great thirst with heat, which is slight or wanting with Dul.

Dul. and Staph. have frequent urination in chill, Croc. has not.

Dul. alone has nausea and involuntary urine during chill

With Croc. alone the chill is < by drinking.
