Common name

General

The provings of coral develop much coryza and epistaxis, and even ulceration within the nostrils. It is to be thought of for whooping and spasmodic coughs, especially when the attack comes on with a very rapid cough, and the attacks follow so closely as to almost run into each other. Often preceded by sensation of smothering, followed by exhaustion. Congestion of face after dinner. Patient becomes purple in face. Violence of paroxysm, even with expectoration of blood. Feeling as if cold air were streaming through skull and air-passages. One is too cold when uncovered and too hot when covered; relieved by artificial heat.

Head

Feels very large; violent pain as if parietal bones were forced apart; worse stooping. Eyes hot and painful. Deep-seated frontal headache with severe pain back of eyeballs. Pain aggravated by breathing cold air through nose.

Nose

Odors of smoke, onions, etc. Painful ulcer in nostrils. Post-nasal catarrh. Profuse secretion of mucus dropping through posterior nares; air feels cold. Dry coryza; nose stopped up and ulcerated. Epistaxis.

Mouth

Food tastes like sawdust. Bread tastes like straw. Beer tastes sweet. Pain in articulation of left lower jaw. Craves salt.

Respiratory

Hawking of profuse mucus. Throat very sensitive, especially to air. Profuse, nasal catarrh. Inspired air feels cold (Cistus). Profuse secretion of mucus dropping through posterior nares. Dry, spasmodic, suffocative cough; very rapid cough, short, barking. Cough with great sensitiveness of air-passages; feel cold on deep inspiration. Continuous hysterical cough. Feels suffocated and greatly exhausted after whooping-cough.

Male

Ulcers on glans and inner prepuce, with yellow ichor. Emissions and weakened sexual power. Profuse perspiration of genitals.

Skin

Red, flat ulcers. Coral-colored, then dark red spots, changing to copper-colored spots. Psoriasis of palms and soles.

Modalities

Worse in open air, changing from a warm too cold room.

Leaders

Is useful for spasmodic cough, like whooping cough. It is continual, short, hawking through the day, so constant and frequent as to have merited the description given it of "Minute gun " cough. This is during the day and there is not much whooping, but at night there is more whooping. The night paroxysms are sometimes very severe.

I have found Coral. one of the very best remedies for post nasal catarrh, with mutch dropping of mucus into the throat. (Natrum carb.) I do not know any other remedy so efficacious in the majority of cases, and generally prescribe it, unless I have strong indications for some other remedy. I seldom fail to hear a good report from it. Coral. has also been found useful in chancre. The ulcer is red (coral red), flat and exceedingly sensitive, sometimes painful. Chancroids or soft chancre, for which the old school cauterize, may find a swift and sure cure in Coral.

Head

Sensation of emptiness and hollowness of the head. Violent headache, with pressure, particularly in the forehead, obliging one to move the head from one place to another ; this gives no relief, nor does sitting up ameliorate it -it is only relieved for a short time by uncovering the whole body, which is burning hot. When moving the head quickly, or rocking it, sensation as if wind were blowing through the skull. The head feels as if it were too large (three times its size). Pressing headache in the forehead ; she cannot keep the eyes open ; relieved by walking in the open air. Congestion of blood to the head on stooping.

Eyes

Pressure, as from sand, in the reddened eyes (evening). On closing the eyes they feel hot, as if bathed in tears. Burning of the eyes from candle light.

Nose

Painful ulcer on tine inside of the right wing, with the sensation as if the nasal bones were pressed asunder. Bleeding of the nose, from one nostril at a time (at night). Profuse secretion of mucus through the posterior nares, obliging one to hawk frequently. Violent coryza ; discharge resembles molten tallow.

Face

Heat in the face on bending the head forward. Pain, as if bruised, in the left malar bone ; worse on touching the part. The lips are chapped and painful. Painful swelling of the left sub-maxillary glands ; worse when swelling and on bending head forward.

Mouth and Throat

Every tooth on the left side feels as if set on edge ; it feels as if the teeth were too close to one another, or as if a tenacious body were lodged between them. Great dryness of the fauces. Constant hawking, owing to an accumulation of mucus in the posterior nares.

Stomach and Abdomen

Food tastes insipid. Beer tastes sweet. Violent thirst ; longing for acids and salt feet. After dinner, hot cheeks and forehead, with cold feet. Nausea, with dryness of the tongue and violent headache ; worse when sitting up.

Stool and Anus

Constipation (for six days), followed by copious papescent stool.

Urinary Organs

Loam-colored urine, with similar sediment. Burning urine.

Sexual Organs

Men. Profuse perspiration of the genitals. Swelling of the prepuce ; the margin of the prepuce feels sour when the linen touches it. The frænum is painful, as if pricked by needles. The glans is sensitive, red, and swollen, and the inner surface and glans secret yellow-green, fetid pus. Red, flat ulcers on the glans and inner surface of the prepuce, with secretion of the quantity of yellow ichor. Involuntary seminal emissions during sleep (without dreams or erections).

Respiratory Organs

During a deep inspiration a sensation as if the air passing through the air-passages were icy cold, an inclination to cough, with difficulty hawking up of bronchial mucus (in the morning).

Back and Neck

Stiffness of the neck. Pain, as if the small of the back were broken.

Extremities

Upper. Pain in the wrists, as if he had been writing much and rapidly. Lower. Pain in the knees, tibia and tarsal joint, as ; if he had walked a great deal.

Sleep

Yawning, with pain in the articulation of the jaw. Great sleepiness ; falls asleep while standing. As soon as she falls asleep she starts up, on account of frightful dreams. Cannot sleep before midnight-tosses about ; if he uncovers himself, he feels ; too cold, and when covered, he feels too hot.

Fever

Pulse full and hard. Chill ; the skin is of the ordinary temperature, with headache and violent thirst ; relieved by external heat. Dry heat without thirst, and not followed by perspiration. The hot parts feel cold when uncovered.

Skin

Smooth spots on the palms ; of the hands and fingers, first of a coral color, then dark-red, and lastly copper-colored.

Conditions

After a short walk in the evening, great lassitude in the upper and lower limbs. Artificial heat relieves the heat and coldness. The pains make him scold and swear.

Characteristics

Red coral, the product of a coralligene zoophyte, contains carbonate of lime, oxide of iron (whence its colour), gelatin, and other elements. In old physic it was considered to have "strengthening properties," and to be astringent, sudorific, diuretic, and absorbent. In homœopathic practice Corallium corresponds to a combination of syphilis and psora. Is suited to persons of nervous temperament; nervous coughs. It causes eruptions which are for the most part of its own colour, coral-red. Red spots on the palms of the hands, at first coral colour, then darker, and finally coppery. The chancres to which it corresponds are coral-red. The cough is of the whooping-cough type; smothering sensation before, and great exhaustion after cough. Cough in "minute-gun" paroxysms. Crowing inspiration; sensation as if inspired air was icy cold. There is much drowsiness with Coral ., and many symptoms appear during sleep. J. N. Lowe cured with Coral . an infant, almost a year old, suffering from laryngismus stridulus, the indications being < during sleep and after waking. Lach ., given first, failed to relieve. Guernsey's indication is: "Whooping-cough, or any other kind of cough when the attack comes on, with a very rapid cough, and the attacks follow so closely as to almost run into each other." I have found it most effective in the nervous "minute-gun" cough where the patient gives an isolated cough at regular intervals through the day. Nash finds it the most useful of all remedies in post-nasal catarrh. Guernsey's other indication is: "Red, flat ulcers on the glans and inner surface of the prepuce, with secretion of a quantity of yellow ichor." In the head there is a sensation of emptiness or hollowness. Head feels very large. Sensation as if forehead were flattened. Change of air causes coughing. Feels cold when uncovered and too hot when covered.

Relations

Antidote to: Mercury. Complementary: Sulph. Compare: Bell., Caust., Coff., Coc. c., Con., Hyos.; Hydrphb. (inspired air feels cold ─ also Cistus.); Nit. ac., Nux v., Mephit., Staph.; Dros. (cough always moist ─ Coral. always dry); Petrol., Selen., Graph.; teeth feel too close together, Tuberc. (Koch). Teste, who proved Coral. and elicited its respiratory symptoms, groups it with Caustic.

Mind

Grumbling humour, with oaths in consequence of the pain. ─ Irascibility and ill-humour. ─ Wine has a natural taste, but immediately stupefies him.

Head

Head bewildered, as if in consequence of drunkenness. ─ Confusion in the head, which feels empty and hollow. ─ Intoxication after drinking very little wine. ─ Pressive cephalalgia, as if everything were going to protrude through the forehead, compelling motion of the head, and mitigated only by uncovering the body, which is burning hot. ─ Pressing headache in the forehead; she cannot keep the eyes open; relieved by walking in the open air. ─ Violent cephalalgia with nausea, greatly aggravated on sitting down. ─ Pain in the sinciput as if it were flattened. ─ Aggravation of the headache, and congestion in the head and in the face, on stooping. ─ Sensation, as if wind were traversing the head, on moving it rapidly (or rocking it). ─ Sensation, as if the head were increased in size (three times its size).

Eyes

Pressure, as from sand, in the reddened eyes (evening). ─ Sensation of compression in the orbit. ─ Pain, as from excoriation in the eyes, on moving the balls or the eyelids. ─ Sensation of heat in the eyes, on closing the lids, with a sensation as if they were swimming in tears. ─ Sensation of burning in the eyes, by candle-light.

Nose

Semi-lateral swelling of the nose, with heat, pulsation and sleeplessness. ─ Painful ulcer in the nostril (on the inside of the r. wing, with the sensation as if the nasal bones were pressed asunder). ─ Epistaxis, sometimes at night. ─ Bleeding of the nose, from one nostril at a time (at night). ─ Great dryness of the nose. ─ Fluent coryza, with excessive secretion of an inodorous mucus, resembling tallow. ─ Profuse secretion of mucus through the posterior nares, obliging one to hawk frequently.

Face

Heat in the face, < by stooping. ─ Pain, as from a bruise in the cheek-bone, < by touch. ─ Pain, as from dislocation in the maxillary joint, on masticating, and on opening the mouth wide. ─ Painful swelling of the sub-maxillary glands; < when swallowing and on bending the head forward. ─ Lips cracked and painful.

Teeth

Every tooth on the l. side feels as if set on edge; it feels as if the teeth were too close to one another, or as if a tenacious body were lodged between them.

Throat

Great dryness of the fauces. ─ Constant hawking, owing to an accumulation of mucus in the posterior nares. ─ Great dryness of the palate and of the throat, with sensation of excoriation on swallowing.

Appetite

Insipidity of food. ─ Sweetish taste of beer. ─ Violent thirst; longing for acids and salt food. ─ After a meal, the head turns round, as during intoxication. ─ After dinner, hot cheeks and forehead, with cold feet.

Stomach

Nausea, with dryness of the tongue and violent headache; < when sitting up.

Stool and Anus

Attacks, periodicity

Frequent : paroxysms of violent coughing.

Every ten or fifteen minutes : paroxysms of cough, with occasional intervals lasting an hour.
For half an hour : towards evening, spasmodic paroxysms of coughing.
All day : short barking cough.
For six days : constipation.

Locality and direction

Right : painful ulcer in nostril, affecting nasal bones.
Left : drawing in external wall of orbit, extending down beneath cheek bone ; zygoma painful ; pain in articulation of lower jaw ; every tooth on side as if set on edge ; painful swelling of submaxillary gland.

Sensations

As if wind was blowing through skull ; as if head was very large, three times its natural size ; as if forehead was flattened by pressure ; as if parietal bones were forced asunder ; as if eyes were swimming in tears ; as of sand in eyes ; as if nasal bones were pressed asunder ; as if left zygoma was bruised ; as if sprained in left articulation of lower jaw ; as if teeth on left side were set on edge ; as if teeth were too close to one another, or as if a tenacious body was lodged between them ; as if frenum was pricked by needles ; as if air passing through air passages was icy cold ; as if smothering before cough ; as if small of back was broken.
Pain : in abdomen with coughing ; in knees, tibiæ and tarsal joints, as if after walking a great deal ; in joint of jaw ; in sternum ; in wrists.
Drawing : in external wall of left orbit, extending down beneath cheek bone.
Burning : of body ; of eyes from candlelight.
Pressing out : at forehead.
Pressing : in forehead ; in shoulder blades.
Pressure : in eyes.
Hollowness : in head.
Emptiness : in head.
Dryness : of fauces ; of tongue ; of nose and throat.
Itching : miliary eruption on elbows.

Tissues

Difficult breathing and spasmodic cough.

Touch. passive motion. injuries

Touch : pain in left zygoma < ; ulcers on scrotum or penis very sensitive ; eruption on elbows feels like a grater.
From touch of linen : margin of prepuce feels sore.

Skin

Copper-colored spots on skin.
Smooth, red spots on skin and palms of hands, at first coral color, then darker red, and finally coppery.
Pustular eruption resembling varioloid.
Measles ; purpura ; psoriasis.

Stage of life, constitution

May be found useful for a combination of syphilis and psora.
Carrie, æt. 2 ; whooping cough.
Girl, æt. 13, nervous temperament, has several times manifested hysterical symptoms ; has not yet menstruated ; cough.
Woman, æt. 45 ; suffering for three years from cough.
Woman, æt. 52 ; suffering for two weeks ; eruption on elbows.
