Keynote

Whooping-cough with violent paroxysms which follow each other rapidly, is scarcely able to get breath (wakes at 6-7 a. m. and does not cease coughing until a large quantity of tenacious mucus is raised, Coc. c. - profuse epistaxis during every paroxysm, Ind.; "minute gun" during the day, whooping at night, Cor. r.). Deep sounding, hoarse barking cough (Verb.), < after midnight, during or after measles; spasmodic, with gagging, retching and vomiting (Bry., Kali c.). Constant, titillating cough in children, begins as soon as head touches pillow at night (Bell., Hyos, Rum.). Nocturnal cough of young persons in phthisis; bloody or purulent sputa. Relations

Often relieves the constant, distressing night-cough in tuberculosis. Hahnemann says (Mat. Med. Pura.): "One single dose of the 30th potency is sufficient to cure entirely epidemic whooping cough. The cure takes place surely between seven and eight days. Never give a second dose immediately after the first; it would not only prevent the good effect of the former, but would be injurious."

Common name

Sundew (DROSERA)

General

Affects markedly the respiratory organs and was pointed out by Hahnemann as the principal remedy for whooping-cough. Drosera can break down resistance to tubercle and should therefore be capable of raising it (Dr. Tyler). Laryngeal phthisis is benefited by it. Phthisis pulmonum; vomiting of food from coughing with gastric irritation and profuse expectoration. Pains about hip-joint. Tubercular glands.

Head

Vertigo when walking in open air, with inclination to fall to the left side. Coldness of left half of face, with stinging pains and dry heat of right half.

Stomach

Nausea. Aversion to and bad effects from acids.

Respiratory Organs

Spasmodic, dry irritative cough, like whooping-cough, the paroxysms following each other very rapidly; can scarcely breathe; chokes. Cough very deep and hoarse; worse, after midnight; yellow expectoration, with bleeding from nose and mouth; retching. Deep, hoarse voice; hoarseness; laryngitis. Rough, scraping sensation deep in the fauces and soft palate. Sensation as if crumbs were in the throat, of feather in larynx. Laryngeal phthisis, with rapid emaciation. Harassing and titillating cough in children-not at all through the day, but commences as soon as the head touches the pillow at night. Extremities

Paralytic pains in the coxo-femoral joint and thighs. Stiffness in joints of feet. All limbs feel lame. Bed feels too hard.

Fever

Internal chilliness; shivering, with hot face, cold hands, no thirst. Is always too cold, even in bed.

Modalities

Worse, after midnight, lying down, on getting warm in bed, drinking, singing, laughing.

Relationship

Antidote: Camph.

Compare: Fluoroform (2 per cent watery solution, 2-4 drops, after paroxysms, considered specific for whooping-cough). Ouabain from leaves of Carissa schimperi-arrow poison (Respiratory spasm-Whooping cough is cut short in first stage and reduced in frequency of attacks and hastens convalescence). Mind and Disposition

Anxiety, especially in the evening and when left alone. Dread of ghosts. Great mistrust. Trifles vex him very much. Self-willed ; obstinacy ; insists upon carrying out his plans.

Head

Vertigo when walking in the open air. Pressing headache (temples), with stupefaction and nausea (morning) ; worse when stooping and from heat ; better from motion and in the cold air.

Eyes

Stitches in the eyes (when stooping). Presbyopia and weakness of the eyes. Contraction of the pupils. Gauze before the eyes ; when reading, the letters appear blurred and pale. The eyes are dazzled by day-light and candle-light.

Ears

Sticking pain and aching, especially when swallowing. Hardness of hearing, with buzzing in the ears. Roaring, humming, and drumming in the ears.

Face

Pale face, with sunken eyes. Small pimples in the face, with fine, sticking, pricking sensations. Face-ache, aggravated by pressure and contact. Black pores on the chin.

Mouth and Throat

Sensation of dryness in the throat. Hæmorrhage from the mouth. Ulceration of the velum. Stinging in the throat during deglutition. Sensation in the pharynx as ; if crumbs of bread had remained behind. Difficulty of swallowing solid food, as if the œsophagus were contracted. Scraping in the throat from eating salt food. Hawking up of green or yellow mucus.

Stomach and Abdomen

Thirst in the morning (during the hot stage of the fever and not during the cold stage). Aversion to pork. Frequent singultus. Water-brash. Vomiting of mucus and food when coughing. Vomiting of bile (morning) ; vomiting at night. Nausea after eating fat food. Vomiting of blood. Colic after eating sour things. Sensation of constrictive pain in the hypochondria ; he has to press on them with the hand when he coughs. Clawing sensation in the pit of the stomach.

Stool and Anus

Diarrhœa, stools consisting of bloody mucus ; after the stool, pain in the abdomen and small of the back.

Urinary Organs

Frequent desire to urinate, with scanty urine, -frequently only a few drops. Frequent urination at night. Dark urine, of strong smell. Watery, inodorous urine (with fetid stool of white mucus).

Sexual Organs

Women. Suppressed menstruation. Menstruation delayed. Leucorrhœa, with labor-like, spasmodic pains in the abdomen.

Respiratory Organs

Bad, offensive-smelling breath when coughing. Oppressed breathing when talking ; mostly while sitting. Sensation of oppression in the chest, as if the voice and breath were retarded when speaking and coughing. Hooping-cough ; attacks ; every one to three hours, with barking or dull-sounding coughs, choking the breathing, caused by tickling or dryness in the throat, or from a sensation of a soft feather in the larynx ; expectoration, only in the morning, yellow and bitter ; has to swallow this mucus down. Aggravation, after lying down, and still more increased after midnight ; when at rest ; when lying in bed ; from heat ; from drinking ; from singing and laughing ; after having had the measles. Cough, with vomiting first of the food, and later, at the end of the attack, of mucus. Cough, causing sensation of constriction of the chest ; he has to press the hand on it. Cough, with expectoration of bright red frothy or of black clotted blood. Cough, with the sound of dryness in the pharynx. Cough when singing, causing smarting in the larynx. Barking cough. Dry, spasmodic cough, with gagging. Hooping cough, with hæmorrhage from the mouth and nose, anguish, blue face, wheezing breathing, suffocation. Expectoration green. Continuous roughness and dryness in the larynx and trachea. Sensation as if a soft body were lodged in the larynx. Alternate soft (yellow, green, or gray) or hardened mucus in the trachea. Inflammation of the larynx and pharynx, causing pain when talking. Deep, cracked voice. Laryngeal and tracheal phthisis. Pain (soreness) in the chest, from sneezing and coughing ; he has to press his chest with the hang. The, sternum is painful, as from subcutaneous ulceration, when pressing on the part. Black pores on the chest and shoulder.

Back

The back is painful as if bruised, particularly early in the morning. The nape of the neck is stiff and painful to the touch.

Extremities

Upper. Nightly rheumatic pain in the humeri, going off, during motion, in the day. Fingers spasmodically contracted ; when grasping any thing they are rigid. Lower. Violent stitch in the os ischium, on rising from a seat. The feet feel constantly chilly ; are covered with cold sweat.

Sleep

Sleepiness at noon and at sunset. Frequent starting during sleep. Frequent waking with perspiration, or as if too wakeful. On waking, great weariness.

Generalities

Rapid emaciation (with acute phthisis laryngealis). Epileptic attacks, with twitching of the limbs ; after the attack, hæmoptysis and sleep. Gnawing, stinging pains in the joints. All the limbs feel sore, as from too hard a bed.

Fever

Chilliness, with coldness and paleness of the face and cold extremities. In the morning hours, coldness of one side (left) of the face, while the other side (right) is hot. Chilliness and chill while at rest ; finds it everywhere too cold, even in bed. Chilliness during the day, heat during the night. Heat almost exclusively in the face and on the head. Warm perspiration at night, especially after midnight and during the morning hours, mostly in the face. Intermittent fever, with sore throat and nausea.

Skin

Gnawing-stinging in the long bones ; worse during rest. Violent itching while undressing ; when scratching, the skin readily peels off.

Conditions

Most ailments are worse during the night and towards morning ; from heat and during rest (while lying down). Aggravation from a light (eyes), after understanding (itching) ; on getting warm in bed (cough ; pain in the long bones).

Characteristics

The chief feature of the Drosera effects is a spasmodic cough resembling whooping-cough, in which affection it is one of the leading remedies, as it is also in the spasmodic cough of phthisis. The characteristic cough is: Frequent spells of barking cough; < evening and after midnight; patient holds his side; vomits if he cannot get up phlegm; every effort to raise a little phlegm ends in retching and vomiting; there may be bloody stools. Teste, who places Drosera in his Zincum group of medicines, mentions that it grows in damp prairies, along the border of marshes, and is avoided by animals. Barrich states that when eaten by sheep it gives them a cough which is fatal to them. Curiously enough, it was recommended by German physicians of the eighteenth century as a panacea for hoarseness, chest affections, and even for phthisis. Serrand, of Paris (translated H. R ., vi. 153) maintains that Drosera has an important rôle in the prophylaxis of tubercle. He refers to the fact that sheep eating Drosera leaves acquire a nocturnal cough and die, and that the pleuræ of cats to which Drosera had been administered were found studded with tubercles. The indications calling for it in the premonitory stage are: pallor, weakness, loss of appetite, dry cough, emaciation. Three laryngoscopic indications are: ( 1 ) Anæmia and pallor of larynx; ( 2 ) vocal cords not sufficiently approximated from functional impairment of crico-arytenoid muscles; ( 3 ) redness and swelling of mucous membrane covering and between the arytenoid cartilages. Dr. Serrand commends Dros . in cases of declared phthisis as well. He gives it in the low attenuations. Buchmann of Alvensleben agrees with Hahnemann that Dros . in high attenuation should not be repeated. He cured himself of a bronchial catarrh which used to attack him every spring and fall, characterised by a violent tickling cough , which almost drove him to distraction at night, with Dros . 1x. and Ø. A single dose as soon as the tickling in the larynx commenced sufficed to allay it at once and allowed him to rest, and it was only repeated when the tickling returned. Among the characteristics of Drosera are: Spasmodic and constricting pains in abdomen; larynx; throat; chest; hypochondria. Crawling in larynx; feeling as if a soft substance were lodged in larynx, as a feather. Difficult swallowing of solids. Voice fails. Stitching pains in chest and all parts; lancinations in brain. Stitches from left loin into penis; itching stitches in glans. Hæmorrhages of bright red blood, from nose; mouth (bloody saliva); with vomit; with stool; expectoration. Gnawing stinging pains in joints and long bones. Dros . has many pains about the hip-joints and has cured sciatica with the following characters: "Pressing pains, < from pressure, from stooping, from lying on painful part, > after rising from bed." Eruption like measles; prickling burning itching; < undressing; > by scratching; bleeding, burning ulcers, cutting pains. Epileptic attacks: with rigidity; with twitching of limbs; after attack, hæmoptysis and sleep. Symptoms are < towards evening and after midnight. < By warmth; by warm drinks; > in open air. Many symptoms are < at rest and when lying in bed. Supporting the part > pains in head and chest. Stooping < ; walking > ; singing and talking < . Motion of eye < head pains. (in the evening) in solitude, with fear of ghosts. ─ Great mistrust. ─ Restlessness, which does not allow prolonged attention to the same object. ─ Inquietude respecting the future. ─ Discouragement. ─ Inclination to drown oneself. ─ Pertinacity in executing resolutions. ─ The least thing puts the sufferer beside himself.

Head

Painful perplexity of the head, as after loud speaking. ─ Vertigo on walking in the open air, which occasions falling (to the l.). ─ Pressive pains in the head, esp. in the forehead and in the cheek-bones, sometimes with nausea and dizziness. ─ Pressing headache (temples), with stupefaction and nausea (morning); worse when stooping and from heart; better from motion and in the cold air. ─ Beating and hammering in the forehead from the inside outwards. ─ Pains, as of excoriation in the scalp.

Eyes

Shootings in the eyes towards the outside, esp. on stooping. ─ Suspension of the sight, or confusion and paleness of the letters while reading. ─ Gauze before the eyes. ─ Presbyopia and weakness of the eyes. ─ Contraction of the pupils. ─ Dazzling by candle-light and daylight.

Ears

Shootings and squeezing in the ears, esp. on swallowing. ─ Hardness of hearing, with buzzing and roaring in the ears. ─ Humming and drumming in the ears.

Nose

Throat

Lower Limbs

Nose dry and stopped up.

Upper face

Pale face, with sunken eyes ; puffed and livid.

Inner mouth

Difficulty of swallowing solid food ; œsophagus as if contracted.

Constrictive pain in both hypochondria, impeding coughing ; unable to cough on account of pain, unless hand is pressed upon pit of stomach.

Abdomen and loins

Painful constriction of epigastrium.
Dull stitch from right to left across abdomen, almost taking the breath, while walking.
Stitches in right side of abdomen while sitting.

Bellyache after sour food.

Stools and rectum

Outward pressing pain, independent of stool.
Frequent stool, with colic.
Stools : soft, fluid ; loose ; papescent ; white, slimy and stinking, with watery, odorless urine.
Loose stool almost continually, but rather < after midnight ; bloody, mucous or offensive stools, followed by pains in abdomen and small of back.
Before and after stool ; tensive pain in upper part of abdomen while holding breath.
After stool : ineffectual straining ; constant inclination to stool ; abdominal and dorsal pains.

Urinary organs

Frequent urging to urinate, with scanty discharge, frequently only by drops.
Frequent, profuse urination.
Urine dark and of strong smell.
Urine watery, inodorous, with fetid mucous stool.

Male sexual organs

Drawing stitches from left loin into penis.

Female sexual organs

Delay of the first menses.

Catarrhal hoarseness, with or without coryza or cough ; is only able to speak in a bass voice ; hoarseness after measles.
Chronic persistent hoarseness resulting from repeated catarrhal attacks.
Great hoarseness, with spasmodic cough, after measles.
Epiglottis in constant motion to and fro, constant endeavor to cough ; larynx very dry ; patient involuntarily supports thyroid cartilage on swallowing or coughing, and there appears to be a constant strain in box of larynx, with disposition to

Constant tickling in larynx, causing cough and preventing sleep at night.
Sensation like from a feather in larynx, exciting cough.
Crawling in larynx, which provokes hacking cough, with sensation as if a soft substance were in it, with fine stitches extending thence to right side of pharynx.
Bruised feeling in larynx whilst inhaling.
Constriction of the larynx when talking.
Mucus in the larynx, either hard or soft.
Chest and throat symptoms worse from talking or singing.
Laryngeal phthisis, with hoarseness, rapid emaciation.

Respiration

Oppression, with every word he speaks the throat contracts ; not so when walking.
Respiration slow ; predominant with moist sound.
Intolerable stitches when coughing and taking a deep inspiration, in the upper part of the chest near the axilla, > by pressing on affected part with the hand, with purulent expectoration mixed with blood.
Whilst inhaling, felt severe aching pains in and below both clavicles, over a small space in lungs ; the infra-clavicular pain afterwards extended round to the scapulæ ; also a bruised feeling of the larynx.
Sensation as if something in chest prevented exhalation when talking or coughing.
Oppressive sensation in chest as if expiration were prevented by coughing or talking.
During an expiration in evening, when lying in bed, sudden contraction of abdomen occasioning a heaving as if he would vomit and bringing on cough.
Difficult breathing, < after midnight.
Dyspnœa, especially on talking, with every word throat becomes constricted ; no dyspnœa while walking.
Severe dyspnœa threatening suffocation ; blueness of face and lips ; cold sweat on forehead ; vomiting of tough mucus. θ Whooping cough.

Attack of suffocation ; cannot recover the breath ; gasping.
Asthma, particularly when talking, with contraction of throat at every word that is uttered.

Cough

Deep sounding, hoarse barking cough.
Rough, scraping, dry sensation deep in fauces and soft palate, causing hacking cough, with yellow mucous expectoration and hoarseness, speaks only with exertion, and in a deep bass voice ; oppression of chest as if air was withheld on talking and coughing, so that breath could not
be expired.
Whooping cough ; attacks, every one to three hours, with barking or dull-sounding coughs, choking breathing, caused by tickling or dryness in throat, or from a sensation of a soft feather in larynx ; expectoration, only in morning, yellow and
bitter ; has to swallow the mucus.
Attacks of coughing preceded, fifteen or twenty minutes, by rattling of mucus in bronchial tubes to which patient solely ascribes attack of coughing. θ Whooping cough.
Whooping cough, with feeling of constriction in chest and hypochondria, so that patient tries to support these parts with hands ; < after midnight ; perspires on waking from sleep.
Cough comes in fits, at long intervals ; cough during intervals is short, not exhausting, and he considers it trifling in comparison with the tormenting attacks ; the fits begin mildly, are short, but increase during course of disease, until cough
becomes unceasing, the attacks occur in quick succession, and forces to sit up, always beginning with titillation and renewed inspiration, until finally vomiting of mucus (rarely of food) sets in, which finishes the paroxysm ; great exhaustion after the fit ; frequently < at
night on lying down. θ Whooping cough.
Paroxysmal dry cough, exciting cause of which seems to be in abdomen with copious perspiration over whole body and culminating in an attack of severe nausea.
Spasmodic, nervous, and sympathetic cough.
Spasmodic cough of phthisical girls.
When coughing a feeling as if something kept the air in the chest, cannot cough right, cannot speak.
Whooping cough, with hemorrhage from mouth and nose, anguish, blue face, wheezing breathing, suffocation.
During cough : face pale or bluish ; efforts to vomit ; vomiting of water, mucus and food ; stitches in muscles of chest ; bleeding from nose or mouth ; has to support chest and hypochondria ; hoarseness ; offensive breath ; rising

Attacks characterized by certain typhoid conditions, with severe spasmodic retraction of abdomen, followed by vomiting of food, mucus and water. θ Whooping cough.
Cough which marks the sequela of measles, especially when it occurs in paroxysms, and is < in afternoon and evening ; even when cough is attended by bloody and purulent expectoration.
Very hoarse cough, < after midnight, during or after measles.
Spasmodic cough, attended by retching and vomiting.
Cough when singing, causing smarting in larynx.
Harassing, titillating cough in children, not at all during day, but commences as soon as head touches pillow at night.
Cough, in evening, immediately after lying down.
The fever and cough, which is very hoarse, are worse after twelve at night. θ Bronchitis infantum.
Awakes at night about 2 o'clock, coughs for a short time and then falls asleep again.
Nocturnal cough of phthisical patients.

Tightness of chest, especially when talking, or even uttering a single word ; > while walking ; the throat seems to contract.
Severe stitches in chest when sneezing or coughing, must press on chest with hands, for relief.
Violent oppressive stitching pain across chest, passing off during motion.
Sensation of oppression in chest as if the air were retained when coughing, and as if breath could not be expelled.
Burning sensation in centre of chest.
Bronchitis of old age, in connection with emphysema or Bronchiectasis ; nocturnal paroxysms ; < lying down ; cough seems to come from abdomen, shaking all the muscles of chest and body, with much exhaustion after attack ; expectoration of yellow mucus or pus ;
paroxysms of cough from one to two hours apart.

Laming pain in right hip-joint and thigh, with pain in ankle, as if sprained ; limp when walking.

Pressing pain in posterior muscles of thigh, < from pressure and stooping ; could not lie thereon at night, passes off after rising.
Occasional stitches in middle of left thigh anteriorly.

Tissues

Acts powerfully upon the respiratory system, through its influence on the pneumogastric nerve, producing a spasmodic dry cough, simulating that of whooping cough.
The attacks of cough are of a spastic character, depending on irritation of the vagus, and affect the bronchi ; whooping cough, bronchial catarrh, bronchitis in senility, emphysema and Bronchiectasis.
Hemorrhages, blood light-red.
Rapid emaciation, with acute phthisis laryngealis.
Gnawing, stinging pains in joints and long bones.

Touch. passive motion. injuries

Touch : stitching sensation in pustules on face < ; hypochondria painful ; nape of neck painful.
Pressure : faceache < ; of hand on pit of stomach > pain when coughing ; > stitches in chest ; on chest when coughing or sneezing > stitches ; pain in muscles of thigh <.
Rubbing : itching on scalp > ; > pain in ulcers.

Skin

Prickling, burning, stinging, itching, gnawing in skin.
Itching > by scratching, rubbing or wiping with hand.
Violent itching while undressing ; when scratching, skin readily peels off.
Eruption, like measles.
Eruption, with painful soreness or stinging.
Black pores on chest, shoulder and chin.
Bleeding, burning ulcers ; cutting pains ; pus bloody, thin and watery, ichorous ; < in morning and during latter part of night ; also when lying on sore side, when sitting, when getting warm in bed ; > from cold, rubbing and while
walking ; right side.
Measles ; very hoarse cough follows or accompanies the disease, < after midnight.

Generalities

The use of this medicine has been mostly limited to whooping cough, but it has a more extensive use.

When we examine its spasmodic nature, its exhaustion, its cramps, which extend through a large number of complaints, we must realize that it is a more extensive remedy. Epileptiform spasms, prolonged sleeplessness, copious sweat on waking from sleep, restlessness and anxiety. imagines that he is constantly persecuted. Flashes of heat, dread of the night. Many complaints come on in the night. Anxiety, sleeplessness, and fear of ghosts. Spasmodic cough. Fear of being alone and suspicious of his most intimate friends.

Confusion of mind and much dizziness. Lancinating pains in various parts of the body, especially in the head, and must support the head with the hands.

Must support the chest when coughing. Must press upon the abdomen. Pressive, congestive headaches. Corrosive itching in various parts of the body with measles -like eruptions. The eyeballs become prominent and congested from coughing during measles and in convulsions. Stitching pain in the eyes. Noises in the ears, roaring, bumming and drumming. Earache in children. Stitching in the ears. Bleeding from various orifices, especially from the nose, throat, larynx, and chest when coughing, in connection with the spasmodic coughs.

Face

Ordinarily the face is pale and sunken with beat of the face and he has cold extremities, except when coughing, at which time the face becomes red, congested, and purple like Bell. and Cupr. Stitching pains will be found in many complaints.

Putrid taste in the mouth is a common symptom when it is found in phtisical conditions of the lungs, larynx, and also in whooping cough. Bloody saliva and hemorrhage from the mouth. Difficulty in swallowing solid foods.

Constriction of the throat and of the larynx and constriction of the oesophagus preventing swallowing. Cramping constriction runs all through the remedy. Cramping of the hands upon undertaking to hold on to something. When grasping the broom handle.

In the throat there is burning and scraping. Stitching pains in the throat. The throat is dark red or purple. I believe that Drosera has a clinical symptom of great value. Scraping hi the larynx and cough after eating. In its proving it has cough after drinking. It has especially cough after eating and drinking cold things. This cough comes from tickling in the larynx and constrictions in the larynx. Nausea and vomiting. Vomiting of blood and bile in the morning and vomiting of mucus, and food when coughing. Coughing until he retches and vomits.

Constricting pains in the pit of the stomach. Constricting pains in the sides of the abdomen. Colic after sour food. Perhaps the most troublesome irritation found in this remedy is in the larynx, where there will be found clutching, cramping, constricting, and burning.

Larynx

Hoarseness and continued irritation causing coughing and continued irritation and scraping of the larynx. Accumulation of mucus in the larynx, dryness in the larynx, spasms of the epiglottis. Violent spasmodic cough from tickling in the larynx.

Violent tickling in the larynx brings on cough, rousing him from sleep, coming on every few hours with increasing intensity making the remedy resemble whooping cough, in which it has been very useful. Sensation in the larynx like a feather. Spasms of the larynx. Spasms of the extremities when coughing. The cough is brought on from tickling, from accumulation of mucus in the larynx. These conditions are found in phthisis of the larynx, in whooping cough, in laryngitis, and in catarrh of the larynx.

Spasmodic difficulties of the chest and larynx cause difficult breathing and suffocation. Sensation as of something in the chest preventing breathing when talking or coughing. Difficult breathing and cough coming after midnight.

Difficult breathing especially on waking. Not able to utter a sound. Difficult breathing and suffocating sensation. The face becomes purple from spasms in the larynx. Compression of the chest. These attacks of suffocation come on with the cough or come upon lying down.

Asthmatic breathing from talking and constriction in the larynx. Deep sounding, hoarse cough, rough scraping cough, loud whooping cough, spasmodic whooping cough. Violent constriction of the chest and muscles of the throat and larynx with whooping cough. Whooping cough coming in paroxysms of two or three hours, but violently worse after lying down at night and toward 3 o'clock in the morning. Most tormenting tickling in the larynx urging to cough.

Paroxysmal dry cough from tickling in the larynx. Spasmodic cough, sympathetic cough from spinal irritation. Violent spasmodic cough in young girls going into consumption. Cough with expectoration of bright red or black clotted blood. Bloody expectoration.

Cough

These spasmodic coughs come often during measles or after an attack of measles. An irritation in the larynx remains. It is one of the most frequently indicated remedies for measles. Like Carbo veg.

Severe attacks of stitching in the chest when sneezing or coughing. He must press on the chest with the hand for relief. Makes an effort to hold chest with the hand when coughing, the cough is so violent. Compression of the chest, burning sensation in the chest, stitching pains in the chest. It is a very useful remedy in chronic bronchitis with spasmodic cough. It is a great palliative for the spasmodic cough that occurs in consumption and all along the course of tuberculosis of the lungs. In these chest complaints, pains between the shoulders, pains in the back as if bruised from coughing.

Coldness in the bands and feet and blueness of the extremities. Cramps in the extremities with the cough. The cough becomes so violent that the patient goes into convulsions. Along with these spasmodic coughs especially in phtisical conditions there are febrile attacks. Chill and chilliness and one-sided chill. Chill and fever with whooping cough. Chill and fever with inflammation of the larynx. The heat as well as the cough is worse after midnight. Cold sweat on the forehead and on the extremities.

Sweat over the whole body following the fever. Copious sweat all over the whole body with the cough. The cough ends in great exhaustion. Whooping cough with fever.

Characteristic

Whooping-cough; in violent paroxysms, which follow each other so rapidly he is scarcely able to get his breath.

Cough: < by warmth; drinking; singing; laughing; weeping; lying down; after midnight; spasmodic with gagging, retching and vomiting.

Clergymen’s sore throat (Arg. n., Arum); with rough, scraping, dry sensation deep in the fauces.

Constriction and crawling in larynx, hoarseness and yellow or green sputa.

Aggravation

After midnight; warmth; during rest.

Type

Quotidian; tertian.

Time

Before 9 A. M., every morning.

Cause

Frequently called for where fevers occur during preva- lence of epidemic pertussis, then it often becomes the genus epidemicus.

Chill

Without thirst. Chill with icy cold hands, blue nails, cold, pale face (Nux), and cold extremities; must lie down. Febrile shivers over the whole body, with heat of the face and icy coldness of the hands, and sometimes bilious vomiting. He always feels too cold, he cannot get warm (Cal.); he feels cold at night in bed; shivering during rest, but not during motion (chill, heat and sweat all relieved by motion, Caps.); even in bed he is unable to keep from shivering and feeling cold, though body is warm to touch (Bar.). Spasmodic cough with violent pressing, pulsat- ing pains in the head. After midnight, coldness of the left half of the face, with sticking pains in it; the right half hot and dry (see Caust.). Constant chilliness, cannot get warm (Aran.).

Heat

Without thirst. Heat at night, chilly during the day. Heat worse after midnight. Heat almost exclusively on face and head. Increased warmth of upper body, evening. After chilli-ness, slight thirst, heaviness of head, throbbing pain in the occiput, and heat of face, usual warmth of rest of body, lasting till 3 P. M. Feels well in the evening.

Sweat

Cold sweat on face, feet, abdomen. Warm sweat, particularly just after midnight; most profuse on face and abdo-men. Sometimes general sweat, particularly at night, attended with a spasmodic cough, which brought on retching and nausea.

Tongue

Clean (Cina). Food has no taste (Eup.). Bread tastes bitter.

"Profuse discharge of watery saliva during febrile stage."—HAHNEMANN.

"Intermittent fever, with sore throat and nausea."—LIPPE.

Apyrexia

Usually clear, though gastric symptoms may be present at times (clear with good appetite, Canch.). Coughs more than in sweating stage. As in Aranea and Bovista, the chill predominates, the other stages being light, sometimes only par-tially developed.
