Common name
Bromide of Ammonia
General
Indicated in chronic laryngeal and pharyngeal catarrh, neuralgic headaches, and obesity. Constrictive pain in head, chest, legs, etc. Irritable feeling under finger nails; relieved only by biting them.
Head
Cerebral congestion. Feeling of a band above ears. Sneezing; thick nasal discharge.
Eyes
Edges of lids red and swollen, also Meibomian glands. Eyeballs feel large and pain around eyes into head.
Throat
Smarting in mouth. Tickling in throat, with inclination to dry, spasmodic cough, especially at night. Burning in fauces. White, sticky, mucus. Chronic speakers' catarrh.
Respiratory
Sudden, short cough, strangling. Tickling in trachea and bronchial tubes. Wakes at 3 am with cough. Feels suffocated; continuous cough, when lying down at night; sharp pain in lungs. Whooping Cough.--Dry, spasmodic cough on lying down.

Bromide of Ammonium. (NH 4 Br.) Solution in distilled water.
Clinical
Ciliary neuralgia. Corpulency. Coryza. Cough. Epilepsy. Kidney, pain in. Larynx, catarrh of. Nails, biting. Ophthalmia, scrofulous. Ovaries, affections of. Pharyngitis. Pterygium. Whooping-cough.
Characteristics
This salt has been well proved by A. M. Cushing. The eyes and ovaries are markedly affected. In the morning the eyes are red and sore, with mucus in corners ( < left eye). There is pain in left ovary, dull, with hard swelling. Chronic laryngeal catarrh of speakers. A sudden desire to cough ─ so sudden it causes strangling. Sudden short cough when rising in morning, from accumulation of mucus in throat. Cough at 3 a.m. The mucus of Am. bro . is apt to be stringy. It is indicated in epilepsy when the aura begins with a fainting or suffocating sensation at epigastrium, rising up both sides of sternum to throat. There is an irritable feeling under linger nails, > only by biting them The known conditions are: > warmth, warm drinks; < in open air, cold air. Many symptoms occur on waking, 3 a.m. Must walk about for fear of suffocation.
Relations
Compare: Kali bro., Arg. n., Caust., Bufo, Cepa (coryza < in warm room); Lach. ( < after sleep). Cough from accumulation of mucus in throat, Æsc. h., Atrop., Grat., Kre., Seneg.
Mind
Feared he might die (with stomach symptoms). ─ Timid, discouraged; lack of self-confidence. ─ While writing mis-spelled words or numbers.
Head
Sensation of band round head pressing hardest just above ears. ─ Pain in side of head (l.) near eye; as if a nail driven in. ─ R. ─ sided headache < by coughing.
Eyes
In evening eyes (esp. r.) feet large, with constant blur before them. ─ Eyes as if sand in them. ─ R. eye feels as if bathed in hot water; stringy mucus in it. ─ Pterygium. ─ Eyes red and sore in morning, with white mucus in corners. ─ Lids swollen; droop, difficult and painful to raise; adhere. ─ Pains round eyes into head. ─ In evening, difficult vision and hemiopia.
Nose
Sneezing on moving about in cold room, or on raising arms; thin discharge from r. nostril (next day thicker). ─ Sneezing on going into warm room; stoppage of nose in warm room.
Mouth
Mouth and tongue smart severely as if just burned; morning. ─ Must hold mouth open when walking on account of heat in throat and lungs. ─ Stringy, tasteless mucus in mouth. ─ Tastes food eaten several hours before.
Throat
During day filled with white sticky mucus, streaked with blood. ─ Throat sore, mottled look. ─ Preparing to swallow is painful, the act is not. ─ Sensation of hot air passing up throat, r. side, though stomach feels cold. ─ Fauces and tongue feel scalded. ─ Stinging and irritation in fauces with inclination to cough > by sneezing.
Stomach
Belching > faint stomach. ─ Dyspnœa, with distress in upper epigastrium.
Abdomen
Sharp twisting pain just above crest of r. ilium.
Stool and Anus
Sudden urgent desire with loose stool. ─ Transient return of old hæmorrhoid.
Urinary Organs
Feeling over r. kidney as if something were pressed hard against it; > by pressure, but leaving a pulling sensation.
Female Sexual Organs
Dull, constant pain and hard swelling in l. ovary.
Respiratory Organs
An almost continuous cough for hours, > lying down at night; sensation of tickling irritation with heat and burning. ─ Sudden desire to cough, coming on so suddenly it strangles one. ─ Sudden short cough when rising from bed in morning, from sensation of mucus in throat. ─ Tickling in trachea and bronchial tubes, attended by cough and slight scraping in throat while coughing. ─ Waked 3 a.m. with cough.
Chest
Waked 3 a.m. with pain from sternum to spine, > by changing position.
Heart
After fatiguing walk, late in evening, irregular action of heart.
Generalities
Malaise and fatigue < lying down, < after emission of flatus while urinating. ─ Nervous restlessness. ─ Pains in legs at intervals, < after motion.
Fever
Chilly feeling in back of chest and nape of neck.

Mind

Inner head
At times a feeling during day as of a band tied around head above ears, pressing hardest just above ears.
Pain in side of head near eye, as if a nail was driven into it.
Sharp pains in left side of head near eye.
Headache from congestion to brain.
Sight and eyes
In evening, eyes feel very large, with constant blue before them.
Right eye feels large and smarts ; has to wear a shade evenings to read or write ; full of stringy mucus ; as if bathed in hot water.
Eyes feel sore as if sand was in them.
Pterygium.
In morning eyes red and sore, with white mucus in corners, < left eye. θ Ophthalmia scrofulosa.
Lids swollen.
Every evening eyelids droop ; difficult and painful to raise.
Lids stick together.
Scrofulous ophthalmia.
Pains around eyes and into head.
Sharp pain near eye in left side of head.
Smell and nose
Sneezing relieves stinging in throat.
Nose stopped up ; then clear discharge.
Occasional discharge of watery fluid from left nostril.
Taste, speech, tongue
Tongue smarts severely as if just burned ; morning.
Inner mouth
Must hold mouth open when walking, on account of heat in throat and lungs.
Mouth feels as if burned, in morning.
Stringy, tasteless mucus in mouth.
Tasting of food eaten several hours before.
Palate and throat
Throat during day filled with white, sticky mucus, streaked with blood.
Throat sore, looks mottled, as if a diphtheritic deposit were commencing.
Irritation of throat, mostly on sides, with inclination to cough ; evening.
Fauces dark red ; congested.
Preparing to swallow is painful, the act is not.
Sensation of hot air passing up throat, right side, though stomach feels cold.
Fauces and tongue feel scalded.

Eating and drinking
Food does not digest.
Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting
Belching relieves faint stomach.
Something seems to rise from pit of stomach, almost stopping breath, causing a faint and very disagreeable sensation, partially > by raising wind.
Scrobiculum and stomach
Swallowing anything causes distress the length of œsophagus and into stomach.
During afternoon and evening, sensation of fainting or suffocation, beginning at epigastrium and rising on both sides of sternum to throat, causing him to sigh and walk around room ; feared he might die.
Sharp cutting pain in stomach.
Terrible distress in upper part of epigastrium ; could not sit still had to walk the room ; much belching ; pain through to back and to both hypochondria ; caused sweat ; could scarcely get his breath.
Abdomen and loins
Sharp, twisting pain just above crest of right ilium.
Stools and rectum
Sudden urgent desire, with loose stool.
An old hemorrhoidal tumor returned quite hard, sore and small, but soon left.
Urinary organs
Feeling over right kidney as if something were pressed hard against it ; relieved by pressure, but leaving a pulling sensation.
Female sexual organs
Dull constant pain and hard swelling in left ovary.
Ovarian neuralgia.
Uterine hemorrhage from ovarian irritation or inflammation.
Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia
Trachea and Bronchia. Tickling in throat causing cough, in evening.
When walking, must hold mouth open on account of heat in throat and lungs.
Respiration
Inclination to draw a long breath.
Sense of suffocation from lung, she must move about from fear of suffocation.
Cough
Cough dry, spasmodic and very severe, at times an interval of only a few minutes.
An almost continuous cough for hours, especially when lying down at night ; sensation of tickling irritation, with heat and burning.
Sudden short cough when rising from bed in morning, from sensation of mucus in throat.
Sudden cough from tickling in throat just below tonsils.

Like a cord around right leg, midway between hips and knee, causing limping and pain all forenoon ; in afternoon pain went to left leg below knee ; in evening in ankle, then in foot, soon passing off, and inclination to cough returning.
Feet cold in warm room, causing legs to ache.
Rest. position. motion
Could not sit still, had to walk floor with distress in stomach.
When walking : must hold mouth open on account of heat in throat and lungs.
Must move about from fear of suffocation.
When rising from bed in morning sudden short cough.
Nerves
(OBS :) Epilepsy.
Decrease of irritability, followed by tetanic convulsions ; later all excitability gone, the frog lies in whatever position it is placed, the spasms become more violent, and death ensues from asphyxia.
Weakness and uncertain movements in a rabbit (after non-fatal doses).
Time
Morning : eyes red and sore ; tongue dry ; tongue smarts ; mouth dry ; mouth as if burnt and full of mucus, also throat ; tickling in throat ; short cough on rising.
Forenoon : pain in pleura ; as if cord was tied around leg.
Afternoon : stomach easier.
Afternoon and evening : fainty ; cough deeper.
Evening : eyes feel large, smart, lids droop ; tickling in throat, hacking cough, feet cold.

Swallowing anything cold causes distress along œsophagus.

Fever
Troubled with the cold more than any other time during winter ; must warm feet even in warm room.
Inclined to be chilly and flashes of heat.

Coughing spells with but a few moments interval.
Locality and direction
Right : eye feels large and smarts ; full of stringy mucus, as if bathed in hot water ; as if hot air passed up throat ; pain above crest of ileum ; pain over kidney ; sharp pain in upper lung ; pressure as from a weight in shoulder.
Left : eye sore and red ; watery discharge from nostril ; pain under middle of clavicle ; dull pain in ovary.
Sensations
