Common name

Mugwort

General

Has some reputation as a remedy for epileptic conditions, and convulsive diseases of childhood and girls at puberty. Locally and internally is injurious to eyes. Petit mal. Epilepsy without aura; after fright and other violent emotions and after masturbation. Several convulsions close together. Somnambulism. Gets up at night and works, remembers nothing in the morning (Kali phos).

Head

Drawn back by spasmodic twitchings. Mouth drawn to left. Congestion of brain.

Eyes

Colored light produces dizziness. Pain and blurring of vision; better; rubbing; worse, using eyes.

Female

Profuse menses. Violent uterine contractions. Spasms during menses.

Fever

Profuse sweat, smelling like garlic.

Relationship

Compare: Absinth; Cina; Cicuta.

Dose

First to third potency. Said to act better when given with wine.

Characteristics

Like the other Artemisias this remedy has a prominent place in convulsive diseases. It is indicated where the patient is excitable and irritable before attack of epilepsy. Epilepsy after fright or grief; after a blow on the head; with menstrual disturbances; with teething. Attack accompanied or followed by profuse offensive sweat; by seminal ejaculations. Profuse sweat, having a peculiar fetid, cadaverous or garlic-like odour is a characteristic of the remedy. Attacks frequently repeated, then followed by a long interval of rest. Somnambulism. Catalepsy after fright. Spasms. Chorea; swallowing difficult, hungry but cannot get the food down. Right side convulsed, left paralysed. Nocturnal pollutions. Violent cramps in abdomen with irregular, insufficient menstruation. Irregular or deficient menstruation with epileptic convulsions. Nervous chlorosis with a very dry skin. Worms.

Causation

Blow on head. Fright or grief or bad news.

Mind

Stupor following convulsions. ─ Somnambulism. ─ Inclination to steal. ─ Effects of fright. ─ Catalepsy induced by bodily exertion or by alluding to the disease.

Head

Sharp shooting pains through the head. ─ Head drawn back by spasmodic twitchings. ─ Head bent backwards and sideways.

Eyes

Coloured light, as light falling through stained-glass windows, makes head dizzy (white light does not). ─ Eyes turned up before attack.

Face

Twitchings in face; mouth drawn to l. ─ Face looks oldish. ─ Lower jaw pressed forward. ─ Chewing motion of gums; grinding teeth.

Teeth

Grinding of teeth, froth at mouth, thumbs drawn into fist, eyes half open, drawn upwards.

Mouth

Bites tongue in spasms. ─ Speech unintelligible, can utter but single words, and these only with great exertion.

Throat

Swallowing difficult; food escapes from the mouth.

Stomach

Hunger, but cannot get the food down. ─ Nausea and vomiting. ─ Cramp in stomach.

Abdomen

Violent cramps in abdomen; irregular, insufficient menses.

Stool and Anus

Greenish diarrhœa. ─ Passes fæces and urine with the spasms. ─ Worms.

Mind

Heart, pulse and circulation

Palpitation. θ Hysteria.
Small ecchymoses on endocardium and pericardium.

Upper limbs

Trembling hands, spasmodically affected, are lifted and put near head. θ Hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalic spasms.
Clenched thumbs.

Lower limbs

Overfatigue and weakness of feet after long walks, or after long illness.

Limbs in general

Spasms of hands and feet.
Tormenting stretching of limbs.

Rest. position. motion

Has to sit but cannot without support, or she would be thrown from chair. θ Chorea.
Exertion : attacks < ; overfatigue.
Motion : heaviness in head.

Nerves

(In sick :) Sensation of nervous system.
In a very nervous state ; constantly picking with fingers. θ Epilepsy.
Very much exhausted, obliged to sit down after attack. θ Catalepsy.
Dogs for a while motionless, remain standing half unconscious, head and tail lowered.
Paroxysms followed by a perfect though short soporous state.
(In sick :) Spasmodic twitchings, most in cervical muscles, drawing head upward and backward, later extending also to shoulders and back.
Chorea.
Spasms and convulsions.
Spasms lasting ten minutes or longer, ending in perfect relaxation resembling paralysis, followed by a sound sleep of half an hour or more.
Hysterical fits.
Convulsions, preventing falling asleep, more right side. θ Hydrocephalus.
Right side convulsed, left paralyzed. θ Hydrocephalus.
Urine and feces pass involuntarily during spasms.
Tetanus in periodical attacks, with pain in whole chest and increased trismus.
Falling to ground with trismus, tonic spasms of one side of body, followed by clonic spasms.
Remaining in same position, she stares straight before her with fixed eyes. θ Catalepsy.
Catalepsy since a great fright with anxiety and fear, in a man, æt. 25 ; attacks return after each vexation.

Attacks, periodicity

Attacks of three to five minutes duration, twice within half an hour. θ Catalepsy.
Attacks recur : at night ; every five weeks ; every 2 to 4 months.

Locality and direction

Right side convulsed, left paralyzed. θ Hydrocephalus.
Right side somewhat lame since birth, still convulsions on both sides with a boy, æt. 18 months.
Left : pupil dilated ; mouth drawn ; side numb.
Forward : lower jaw protrudes.

Tissues

Strong, full-blooded, well fed children, during dentition ; eclampsia.
Boy, æt. 14 weeks, 15 attacks in 24 hours ; eclampsia.
A child, æt. 6 months ; after mother had suffered much from grief during pregnancy ; from 4 to 6 paroxysms a day for 2 months ; eclampsia.
Boy, æt. 18 months ; skull injured during birth ; frightened by a bite of a dog ; croup and convulsions.
A weakly, miserable boy, æt. 2, emaciated after typhus with diarrhœa, loss of consciousness and constant boring with occiput in cushions ; hydrocephalic spasms.
Girl, æt. 10, delicate, irritable ; chorea ; scrofula.
Boy, æt. 12, after ascarides had been removed ; chorea.
A stout, active, healthy boy, æt. 13, suffering for three years from epilepsy, after a box on ear, having for six months from 6 to 18 paroxysms a day, besides 3 to 5 at night.
