Keynote

Intermittent fever: complicating traumatic or chronic urethritis or stricture; with abdominal affections and perverted or defective assimilation. Thirsty and hungry, yet as soon as they begin to eat or drink they loose all desire (rev. of, Cal.). Sudden urging to urinate (Canth.). Child suddenly seized with desire to urinate; if cannot be gratified at once, jumps up and down with pain. Burning, tingling from perineum throughout whole urethra. Frequent voluptuous tickling in fossa navicularis. Gonorrhoea: sudden irresistible desire to urinate; intense biting, itching, deep in urethra, must rub it with some rough article in urethra for >; pain at root of penis or neck of bladder. Gleet.

Leaders

It has a very characteristic indication for its administration, viz.: "Great and sudden desire to urinate," children stand and jump right up and down from pain and urging. This is mostly found in chronic cases (especially after gonorrhœa) after the inflammation has extended backward to the neck of the bladder. Another very troublesome symptom found under Petroselinum is itching in the urethra; feels as if he must run a stick or something in there and scratch it. Burning, tingling, from perinæum throughout whole urethra. Children are sometimes troubled with such sudden and intense desire to urinate that they will jump right up and down, trying to hold on until their clothes are unbuttoned. It is like the sudden desire for stool of Aloe -"must git thar."

Characteristics

Petrosel . is referred to by Hahnemann as a gonorrhœal remedy when frequent desire to urinate exists. It was proved by Bethmann. He obtained only thirty-six symptoms, all in the genito-urinary sphere, but these were very characteristic, and have given the remedy a definite place in homœopathic medicine, especially in gonorrhœa and gleet. The leading indication is: Sudden urging to urinate; and drawing, tingling, crawling, or itching in navicular fossa. During micturition, burning and tingling from perineum through whole urethra. After micturition cutting biting in fossa navicularis. Milky or yellow discharge. Parsley tea is a recognised remedy for gonorrhœa in domestic country practice. Parsley eaten after meals, with or without salad oil, is reputed to act as a solvent on uric acid if there is a tendency to its formation in the urine. I have seen a case in which this effect was apparently produced. In gonorrhœa and gleet I have confirmed its efficiency, given in ten-drop closes of the tincture. In a case of dysuria from prostatic enlargement (quoted in Critique , vii. 84) there was frequent urging to urinate every half to three-quarters of an hour, with burning pains in bladder and urethra. Petrosel . 4x, three drops every hour, took away all the pains and relieved the tenesmus in a few days. The prostate gland itself was not influenced. Hering has collected symptoms from other observers. Farrington says Petrosel . is a great "baby medicine" in urinary difficulties. It has cured numbers of cases of intermittent fever; and traumatic or other urethral fevers. [Parsley is said to be poisonous to ferrets. Fresh butter mid parsley applied warm is an old remedy for bruises. An infusion is given to all children recovering from scarlatina by the matron of a suburban infectious hospital. An old gleet has been known to disappear from parsley infusion; and an old Edinburgh surgeon used to give it in all nephritic and vesical diseases that were chronic. ─ R. T. C.]

Ague, especially quotidian type ; periodicity strongly marked ; stages regular both in their evolution and succession ; adapted to acute, non-miasmatic fevers which appear to depend upon defective assimilation or perverted innervation ; indicated in men, when the pyrexia is accompanied by flatulent dyspepsia, with heat and twitching in epigastric region, eructations, nausea, vomiting and colics ; in women of strong plethoric constitutions, whose menses are painful and slight or even absent, with lumbar or inguinal pains ; slight cerebral excitement.
Intermittent fevers complicated with abdominal affections (eight cases cured after failure of Quinine).

Characteristic

In the herbarium of Horstius, as early as 1630, this remedy is mentioned as having cured catarrhal, quotidian and tertian fevers. But like all similar cures, they were purely empirical and practically worthless.

Sudden urging to urinate.

Child suddenly seized with desire to urinate; if he cannot be gratified immediately he jumps up and down with pain.

When chronic urethritis or stricture, gonorrhœal or traumatic, cause or complicate the case (Clem.).

Vesical or urinary symptoms are usually present as valuable concomitants.

There is frequent desire to urinate, recurring nearly every half hour, caused by a crawling, stitching, titillating in the fossa navicularis.

Drawing, burning, sticking in fossa navicularis, that after urinating changed to a cutting-biting (Canth., Med., Sars.).

Type

Quotidian by preference; tertian. Periodicity strongly marked; the stages are regular both in their evolution and succession (Quinine). Adapted to acute, non-miasmatic fevers, which appear to depend upon defective assimilation or perverted innervation.

Apyrexia

There are twitching, jerking pains in the epigastrium, flatulent eructations, colic, nausea and vomiting; stools white, clay-colored (Pod.).
