General

Chronic rheumatism connected with heart lesions and asthenopia offer a field for this remedy. Rheumatic nodes. Uric acid diathesis Whole body is sore. Gout and tophi.

Head

Tension, as if bound; better, sitting and going out. Externally sensitive. Headache ceases while eating. Trembling and throbbing. Pain in heart; extends to head. Dizzy states with ringing in ears. Both cheeks covered with dry, bran-like scales.

Eyes

Half vision; invisible right half. Photophobia. Pain over eyes. Dry lids. Eyes pain after reading.

Stomach

Acidity, nausea, gnawing, relieved by eating (Anacard). Cannot endure slightest pressure of clothes (Laches).

Urine

Tenesmus. Turbid urine, with mucus and red deposit. Pain in region of right kidney. Free and colorless. While urinating, pressure in heart. Cystitis, subacute and chronic.

Respiratory

Constriction of chest. Violent cough when lying down. Air feels cold when inspired. Pain in mammary glands, which extend into the arms and fingers.

Heart

Rheumatic soreness in cardiac region. Sudden shock in heart. Throbbing, dull stitch in cardiac region. Pains in heart before menses, and associated with pains in bladder, and before urinating; better, after. Trembling and fluttering in heart, extending to back.

Urinary

Soreness of bladder; pain in right kidney and ureter. Turbid urine with mucus, scanty and dark, acrid; sandy deposit.

Extremities

Paralytic stiffness all over. Itching about joints. Rheumatic pains throughout shoulder-joint, arm, and fingers and small joints generally. Pain in hollow of foot, extending to knee. Swelling and tenderness of finger and toe joints; better, hot water. Nodular swellings in joints. Ankles pain when walking.

Skin

Scabby, tettery eruption on hands, head, and cheeks, preceded by red, raw skin. Dull stitch, ending in itching. Barber's itch (use high). Rough rash all over body, much loose epithelium, tough, dry, itchy skin.

Modalities

Worse, in morning, right side. Better, rising and moving about.

Relationship

Compare: Lyc; Ammon phos; Benz ac; Calc; Lithium chlor (symptoms of cinchonism, viz.: Dizzy head, full, bluring of vision Ringing in ears; marked tremors; general weakness; marked muscular and general prostration; no gastro-intestinal effects. Nose sore, heartburn, pain in teeth). Lithium lacticum (rheumatism of shoulder, and small joints relieved by moving about; worse, resting). Lithium benzoicum (deep-seated pains in loins; in small of back; uneasiness in bladder. Cystic irritation. Gallstones. Frequent desire. Diminishing uric acid deposit). Lithium bromatum (cerebral congestion, threatened apoplexy, insomnia and epilepsy).

Leaders

Chronic rheumatism connected with valvular heart troubles should call our attention to this remedy, for it has done good service in such cases. Symptoms: "Rheumatic soreness in the cardiac region." "Violent pains in the heart when bending over." "Pains in heart when urinating or at menstrual period." "Flattering of the heart with mental agitation," are all valuable guides to its selection. Then if we have the rheumatic symptoms, swelling and redness with great tenderness of the small joints, the indications are very positive for its use.

There are often heavy deposits in the urine of mucus, uric acid or pus. I have done some excellent work with it in such cases.

Head

Pain over the eyes and tension, as if bound in the temples ; diminished while eating, but returning soon after eating, and remains as a pressure in the temples until in the night, and only goes away after falling asleep. Pains in a small spot in the right temple. Pressure in the temples from without inwards, with a pressing pain in the middle of the chest. Tension as if bound in the temples, with half vision. Early on awaking, violent headache in vertex and temples (after sudden cessation of the menses), with nausea. Heavy weight upon the vertex with pressure upon the left temple. Headache worse when lying down ; it pains everywhere ; better when sitting ; relieved by going out. Looking at any thing makes the headache worse ; can hardly keep the eyes open ; they pain as if sore from morning till noon. Trembling and throbbing in the head, the pains in the heart extend to the head. Head seems too large. Head externally sensitive.

Eyes

Stitches in the right eye. Eyes pain as if sore. Sensation of dryness and pain in the eyes after reading. Sensation as if sand were in the eyes. Pain over the eyes, with half vision. The sunlight blinds him. Uncertainty of vision and an entire invisibility of the right half of whatever she looked at (during second day of menstruation).

Ears

Earache, left side, from the throat, with prosopalgia. Pain behind the left ear, in the bone, extending towards the neck.

Nose

Nose obstructed, above and in the forehead, in the morning and forenoon. Blows his nose very much in the remains behind in the choana. Dropping from the nose in the open air. Nose swollen, red, especially on the right side, sore internally-shining crusts form in it ; it is dry and as if inflamed (at the same time frequent urinating at night, disturbing the sleep).

Face

Pain in the right side of the face (afternoon) from the root of the tooth that has been sawn off, extending to the temple, followed next day by the same pain in the left side, passing from the throat to the left ear, causing earache and moderate brief pain in the left temple.

Throat

Sore throat extending into the ear. Expectoration of mucus from the choana and out of the fauces in solid lumps, especially morning and forenoon.

Stomach and Abdomen

Gnawing in the stomach worse before a meal, it goes away while he eats. Nausea and gnawing in the stomach. Nausea, with fulness in the temples ; with headache. Acidity in the stomach. Fulness in the pit of the stomach, cannot endure any pressure of the clothes. Pressure in the hepatic region.

Stool and Anus

Diarrhœa after fruit. Very offensive stools (daring the night). Very stinking discharge of the flatus. Violent, painful, dull stitch in the perineum near the anus, from above downwards, from within outwards.

Urinary Organs

Sensitive pain, sharp pressure, in the vesical regions, more on the right side, after urinating. Tenesmus vesicæ and micturition (evening while walking). Flashes of pain in the region of the bladder, inferiorly, more towards the right before passing water ; pain extends into the spermatic cord after urinating. Quick strong tenesmus. Frequent and copious micturition (disturbing the sleep). Turbid urine with mucous deposit. Urine scanty and dark very acrid. Dark, reddish-brown deposit. On rising to urinate, a pressing in the region of the heart, which did not cease till after urination (morning).

Sexual Organs

Men. Erection after urination at night. Burning in the urethra. Women. Menses too late and too scanty.

Respiratory Organs

On inspiration the air feels so cold that it seems to be felt unpleasantly even in the lungs. Pressure in the middle of the chest. Constriction of the chest when walking (after breakfast), followed by expectoration of mucus. Violent cough in the evening, while lying down, compelling to rise, without expectoration ; the irritation to cough is in a little spot, posteriorly and inferiorly in the throat. Rheumatic soreness in the region of the heart. Sudden shock in the heart. Throbbing ; like a dull stitch in the region of the heart. Pains in the heart after pains in the bladder. Pains in the heart before and at the time of the commencement of the menses. Trembling and fluttering of the heart (after mental agitation of a vexatious character).

Back

Stitch in the sacrum. Pain in the sacrum, when standing, with confusion of the head.

Extremities

Upper. Burning stitch in the ball of the hand, in the left thumb. Itching-throbbing, very sensitive pain in all the fingers, as if it were in and upon the bones, extending from the hands to the ends of the fingers, only during repose ; it ceases upon pressure, when grasping, and during motion. Soreness at the margin of the nail, with pain and redness. Lower. Pain in the right hip, later in the left. Rheumatic pains in the lower extremities. Pain of the knees, above the knees, especially when going up stairs. Prostrated feelings in the knee-joints, weakness of the knew, on going up stairs. Rheumatic pains in the right foot on awaking at night, they pass away on rising. Painfulness of the feet, ankles, metatarsus, all the toes, especially of the border of the foot and the sole, as if it were gouty. Pain and weakness of the feet. Burning in the great toe, especially around the corns. Great soreness of the corns. Itching of the sole of the (left) foot on the inner margin. Pain in the little toes.

Generalities

Paralytic stiffness in all the limbs of the whole body as if beaten ; stiff and sore over the whole body, in all the bones, joints and muscles. Pressing, as if with a dull point, here and there, internally, as if it were wear the bone, most in the left side. Burning stitch which goes from within outwards, and ends in an itching. Contracting sensation, with shudder.

Sleep

Sleepiness early in the evening ; late in the morning. Sleep at night disturbed by urination. Voluptuous dreams, tenesmus vesicæ, and erections, which subside after urination.

Fever

Shudder starting from the thorax. Very copious perspiration. Perspiration on the back of the hands.

Skin

Itching, at the anus, in the middle finger around the margin of the nail, on the side of the thigh, in the sole of the foot, in the palm of the hand.

Characteristics

Hering introduced and made the first provings of Li. c . It affects the entire organism, but notably head and eyes, urinary organs, heart, and joints. In arthritic complaints accompanied with heart or eye symptoms it is very likely to be needed. Recurring attacks of acute inflammation of the small joints. The skin of the Lith . patient is dry and harsh like a nutmeg-grater. According to Allen, the Lactate of Lithia has been found valuable for subacute rheumatism of the shoulder-joint. "Soreness" is a note of Li. c .: Bruised spots from falls or blows. Bones, joints, muscles, whole body sore as if beaten. Rheumatic soreness in heart region. Eyes pain as if sore. "Pressing from within outward" is another common symptom: in head; abdominal ring; perineum; chest. There are two grand characteristics about the heart symptoms: < bending forward; and > after urinating, though < on rising to urinate. This > after urinating may be compared with < on cessation of menses: "Menses cease suddenly and headache comes on." A pain in heart occurs before and at time of menses. The heaviness is > whilst eating, and < after. A good deal of confusion in the head. The nose is red and inflamed; there is dropping of solid lumps down the back of the nose. Acidity of the stomach. Sensations are: Temples as if bound. Head too large. Eyes dry. As if veil before eyes. Lancination as from red-hot needles in bubo. Arm as if paralysed. Border of foot and soles as if gouty; itching. Prostration of whole body, especially knee-joints and sacrum. Paralytic stiffness of whole body. Most symptoms are < at night or early morning. Hot water < itching. Open air = dropping from nose and constriction of chest. Inspired air feels cold even into lungs. Going out > headache. In general, rest > and motion < ; but lying down < headache and cough. Many symptoms of Lith. c . have Concomitants in other parts.

Female Sexual Organs

Menses: late, scanty; cease suddenly and headache comes on.

Respiratory Organs

Soreness of bladder, and sharp sticking pains in neck of bladder, on right side, with soreness ; frequent urination ; pains in right kidney.
Flashes of pain in region of bladder, more toward right, before passing water ; pain extends into spermatic cord after urinating.
Tenesmus vesicæ with micturition ; evening while walking.
On rising to urinate, pressing in cardiac region, not ceasing until after urinating ; morning.
Urine : scanty, dark acrid ; pain when passed, emission difficult ; with dark, reddish brown deposit ; turbid with mucous deposit ; profuse, with uric acid deposit.
Burning in urethra.
Frequent copious urination ; disturbing sleep.

Male sexual organs

Erection after urination at night.
Greenish yellowish discharge from urethra, thick and profuse, alternating with hæmaturia.
Burning in urethra.
Pain in right side, in urethra and spermatic cord, into testicle.
Pain in testes, and when sitting, stitches in penis.

Female sexual organs

Menses : late, scanty ; cease suddenly and headache comes on.

Respiration

Cough

Violent cough, in quick shocks, evening while lying ; must rise ; no sputa ; irritation to cough, starts at a small spot posteriorly and inferiorly in throat.

Inner chest and lungs

Pressure in middle of chest from within outward toward sides.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Pressing in region of heart, on rising to urinate, > after urinating.
Throbbing ; dull stitch in cardiac region ; sudden shocks.
Rheumatic soreness in cardiac region.
Violent pain in region of heart, as she bent over bed ; morning after rising.
Pains in heart before and at time of urinating ; also before and at time of menses.
Soreness about heart, < on stooping ; pains in limbs ; finger joints tender and painful ; sleeplessness.
After mental agitation of a vexatious character, to which she is very subject, a trembling and fluttering of heart, distressingly painful in heart and as far as between shoulders ; extends upwards into head where it is felt as painful throbbing ; the air on inspiration seems so
cold, that it is felt unpleasantly even in lungs. θ Valvular insufficiency.
Heart disease, with induration of aortic valves ; "bruit de scie," followed by a bellows sound within a small space in region of aortic valves ; sharp pains shooting through back, shoulder and arm ; arm as if paralyzed.

Sore feeling right side near spine, on a small spot ; < from pressure ; morning on rising.

Upper limbs

Pain near point of right pectoralis major on margin of right shoulder.
Burning stitch in ball of left thumb.
Itching, throbbing, sensitive pains in all fingers, < second and third of left hand, as if in bones ; extends from hands to finger ends, only during repose ; > on pressure when grasping and during motion.
Left middle finger painful through and through.
Soreness at margin of nail, with redness and pain.

Lower limbs

Pain in right hip, later in left.
Itching, burning pain in a small spot on right hip, then on thigh, then on little toe ; all on external aspect of limb ; also internally on left thigh and knee.
Rheumatic pains in lower extremities.
Pains in and above knees, especially when going up stairs ; knees weak.
Syphilitic, bluish, deep old ulcer on calf of leg.
Painfulness of feet, ankles, metatarsus and toes, especially at border of foot and soles as if gouty.
Ankle joints pain when walking, first right more, then left ; frequent urgent pains of moderate severity, of a striking character, from within outward, ending in a burning itching in a small spot.
