General

Albuminuria, diabetes, strangury, irritable bladder, enlarged prostate are a special field for this remedy. Excellent in renal dropsy. Chills and pains run upwards. Impotency and sterility. Homesickness.

Head

Left-sided headache with vertigo. Pain from left shoulder to occiput. Sick headache beginning in morning, worse afternoon and evening, worse in cold air.

Urinary

Deep, dull pain in kidneys. Burning in bladder and urethra on urinating. Insufficient flow; milky. Strangury. Hæmaturia. Constant desire; bladder feels dull. Dysuria. Vesical irritability in women. Diabetes insipidus.

Back

Weight and heaviness in loins and back.

Female

Pain around left ovary. Threatened abortion. External genitals feel as though wet.

Fever

No thirst during chill, but much frontal ache. Chill commences in back. Violent shaking, with comparatively little coldness. Bone-pains.

Leaders

From the provings made by Dr. Dresser and his wife this remedy ought to be a good one for urinary diseases. And Dr. Hughes says: "The drug has become my favorite remedy for vesical irritability in women." I have not yet tried it in such cases; but I have done some good work with it in intermittents, when the chill began in the small of the back and spread from there up and downward, which is as near a keynote as any I know for its use. Like the Eupatorium perfoliatum there are bone pains present. A lady who had lived near a marsh or swamp for seven years never had any appearance of malarial symptoms while living there, but after she came away they developed and were unyielding to the usual Quinine treatment. In fact, it utterly failed to do more than suppress for a short time when it would return and in an intensified form. On the above indications she was quickly and permanently cured by Eupatorium purpureum 200th.

Capsicum seems to resemble this remedy, both in the chills beginning in the back and the vesical irritability, but the Capsicum chill begins exactly between the shoulders, while Eupatorium begins in the dorsal or lumbar region.

Capsicum has violent chill, with general coldness of the body.

Eupatorium purp., violent shaking with little coldness of the body. Eupatorium purp., Eupatorium perf. and Capsicum all have bone pains before the chill, but Eupatorium perf. the strongest.

Characteristics

The fever symptoms of E. purpureum resemble those of E. perfoliatum , but E. purpur . has many more symptoms in the urinary and sexual regions. The general soreness is less marked with purpureum . Both have chills beginning in the back, those of purpureum (as also the pains) run upwards, and with them there is much shaking and comparatively little coldness. Bone pains, nausea, and vomiting accompany fever. Sweat is slight. Restless, tossing, moaning, unable to lie down. The common name, "gravel root," indicates the traditional use of the drug, and in the hands of eclectics it has done good work in cases of irritable bladder, diabetes insipidus, incontinence of urine and calculous affections. Hale mentions that impotency has been cured in the male, and sterility and uterine atony in the female. It is similar in action to Cimicif . and Helonias here. E. purpur . has been well proved by a Mrs. Dresser, and she experienced a feeling of home-sickness even when living in her own house. Motion < ; changing position ever so little = chilliness down back. Symptoms are < left side, and there is sensation as if falling to left side, as with E. Perfol . Cystitis in pregnant women from riding over rough roads. Distressing dyspnœa from dropsy.

Mind

The mind is encompassed by various delusions. ─ Sighing. ─ Home-sickness, although in her own house. ─ Great fear of sickness. ─ Depressed and sleepy. ─ Hysterical, low-spirited state.

Head

Head feels light and dizzy, as though flying round and round; cannot get rid of sensation as if falling to l. side; the whole body seems to participate, < morning, disappearing at noon. ─ Illusions of sight and hearing, with vertigo. ─ Much headache and constriction over frontal region; with chill. ─ Dizzy, with deep, dull aching pains through l. temporal region. ─ Sick headache; dull hammering, stitching, or boring l. side; pressing from r. to l.; beginning morning, increasing during afternoon and evening; < in cold air; > while walking slowly in fresh air. ─ Violent headache; before chill; during morning; with fever. ─ Sore scalp with itching. ─ Sweat, principally about head, esp. profuse on forehead.

Eyes

Staring. ─ Red and swollen (with headache). ─ Lachrymation.

Ears

Ears feel full. ─ Illusions of hearing. ─ Crackling < on swallowing.

Face

Face flushed. ─ Lips blue.

Mouth

Tongue furred, brown along centre. ─ Tongue, prickling and stinging in tip; on back. ─ Numbness of tongue. ─ Saliva abundant.

Throat

Choking fulness, must swallow often. ─ Burning, as if had swallowed some hot substance; most at back of throat. ─ < Swallowing. ─ Pain l. side of throat, causing pain on swallowing; before chill. ─ Fluttering in throat pit.

Stomach

Thirst: before chill; none during; with fever; with dropsy. ─ Desire for warm drinks. ─ Much wind in stomach; eructations almost constant. ─ Nausea at smell or sight of food or cooking. ─ Great nausea but no vomiting with chill; vomiting with fever; with sick headache. ─ Swelling and fulness, mostly l. side. ─ Griping, crampy pain.

Limbs

Tired, weak uneasiness in limbs, with numbness and gnawing pains. ─ Rheumatic pains shifting from place to place, always from below upward. ─ Pains in arms and legs before chill; during fever limbs cold. ─ Neuralgia of r. shoulder or r. knee, passing over to l. ─ Soreness of bones, aching of limbs as if bones were broken, pains come and go suddenly; very restless, but not > by motion.

Upper Limbs

Arms perspire most; hands cold, finger-nails blue.

Lower Limbs

Gnawing in hip-bone. ─ Numbness of legs after or with severe bone pains. ─ Severe shooting pains in l. sciatic nerve, producing a palsied sensation, esp. after motion; legs feel tired, esp. l. ─ Feet feel as if she had walked a long journey; it seems as though her heels were crowding through her boots.

Sleep

Yawning, gaping, and sighing. ─ Sleepy and depressed. ─ Sleep restless and mind disturbed, frightful dreams.

Fever

Hearing and ears

Ears feel as though they were full.

Fluent coryza ; great heat, sneezing.
Abundant discharge of a thin, watery fluid, making nose sore and irritable.

Upper face

Congestion to face, with burning heat, dry and hot to touch.
Face flushed, with fever.
Shining appearance of face, as when having used a large quantity of soap in washing.

Lower face

Teeth and gums

Gums red and hot.

Taste, speech, tongue

Tongue furred, brown along centre ; bitter, pappy taste, with chill.
Pricking and stinging in end of tongue.
Fine pricking sensation on posterior part of tongue.
Numb feeling of tongue, as if caused by aconite.

Inner mouth

Increased action of all the glands of the mouth ; abundance of saliva.

Palate and throat

Fluttering in throat-pit ; extends upward from heart.
Disagreeable fulness in throat ; can hardly prevent crying.
Choking fulness of throat, must swallow often.
Swallowing : < crackling in ears ; causes pain.
Soreness, roughness and dryness in throat.
Sensation in throat as if having swallowed tobacco.

Ischias sinistra ; severe shooting pains in course of left sciatic nerve, producing a palsied sensation, especially after motion ; neuralgia of right shoulder, or of right knee, passing over to left side ; neuralgic pains from below upwards, mostly in left side
of back and hip ; gnawing in hip-bone, legs feel weak and tired, left leg more.
Rheumatism, especially in aged persons, with sensation of soreness of bones, leaving ankles and feet swollen ; profuse discharge of clear urine ; intense aching in limbs, as if bones were broken ; pains come and go suddenly ; very restless, cannot keep still, though
there is great desire to do so, and the pains are not > by motion.

Tissues

Through the spinal nervous system it produces a state of muscular system similar to rheumatism ; it probably affects the anterior portion of spinal cord the most.
Through the renal plexus, this remedy has a specific and special action upon the kidneys, acting as a powerful diuretic, producing great increase of urinary secretion ; large doses produce vesical irritation, with frequent desire to urinate, which is very urgent and painful ;
urine loaded with mucus, and high-colored and scanty.
Distressing dyspnœa ; whole body and extremities extremely œdematous ; secretion of urine very scanty, only 3 or 4 ounces in twenty-four hours ; no organic disease discernible ; urine however slightly albuminous ; pulse feeble but
regular ; extremities cold ; considerable general prostration. θ Dropsy.

Touch. passive motion. injuries

After riding four miles a very rough road, with much jolting and shaking, while pregnant, violent dysuria.

Infant, æt. 2 weeks ; retention of urine.
Babe, æt. 11 months, living in a miasmatic district, is pale, wan, debilitated ; intermittent fever.
Girl, æt. 2 1/2 years, delicate, pale, frail, living in a miasmatic district, was seized with convulsions, followed by paroxysm of intermittent fever.

Characteristic

Has been praised as a preventive.

All symptoms worse on left side.

Sensation as if falling to the left; persistent, cannot get rid of it.

Weak, tired feeling in every organ of the body; cannot move without making a desperate effort.

Rheumatic pains go from below upward (Ledum—shoot downward, Kalmia); change places frequently (Kali bi., Lac c., Puls.).

Sleep, restless, disturbed with frightful dreams.

Mechanical dysuria; from displaced uterus; jolting ride during pregnancy.

Constant desire to urinate; no matter how often he voids urine, bladder still feels full.

Incontinence of urine in children.

Chronic cystitis: uneasy; deep aching; dull pain and soreness in bladder; smarting and burning in bladder, in urethra, on urinating.

Aggravation

Motion; changing position; draft of air.

Type

Double tertian; double quartan; malarial.

Prodrome:—Bone pains in arms and legs (bone pains with intense thirst, Eup. perf.). Dry, hacking cough in spells.

Chill

With thirst; begins in small of back—lumbar region (interscapular region, Caps., Polyp.), passing up and down, thence extends over the body.

Chill begins between scapulæ, thence spreading over body like waves; craves heat to back, yet heat does not relieve (heat >, Caps.).

Longing for lemonade, cold acid drinks, with violent bone pains, blue lips and nails (Nat., Nux), extremities cold, and frontal headache. Violent shaking, with comparatively little coldness (Eup. perf.). Nausea, but no vomiting, as the chill is leaving (vomiting at close of chill, Eup., Lyc.). Nervous, restless, hysterical mood. Numbness of the legs after or in conjunction with the severe bone pains.

Slight movement while covered or draft of air produces a return of chill.

No thirst, or thirst for lemonade and acid drinks. Chill begins in lumbar region, thence ex- tends over body. Nausea as the chill is leaving, but no vomiting.

Great thirst for cold water.

Chill, with bone pains, pains in back, gaping, stretching, throbbing head- ache. Bitter vomiting at close of chill. Drinking hastens chill and causes vomiting.

Heat

With thirst. Long-lasting heat, with bone pains, nausea and vomiting. Hunger, with desire to eat immediately after the fever (hunger before chill and during sweat, Cinch.).

Frightful dreams. Longing for hot drinks (Ars., Casc., Ced.).

Long-lasting; thirst, bone pains, and hunger as the heat is passing off (Cina, Cinch.).

With sleep; moaning, in- creased headache. "A swallow of water will make him shiver" (Caps.).

Sweat

Without thirst; slight, mostly about forehead and head; of upper parts of body. Chilly down the back, when chang- ing position ever so little. Very rarely, sweat is profuse (same as its congener, Eup.).

Chilly when changing position ever so little during sweat.

Bone pains disappear with disappearance of sweat. Light chill and profuse sweat, or shaking chill, and light or wanting sweat.

Tongue

Heavily furred, brown along the centre; bitter, pappy taste with the chill.

Apyrexia

Passes more urine than normal, with frequent desire; scalding on urinating. Profuse flow of clear, limpid urine; weak, tired and faint after urinary symptoms. Vertigo, with "a dizzy feeling" all over, and a persistent sensation of falling to the left (Col.—of falling, Gels.).

Jaundiced hue; great weakness; anæmia.
