General

Mucous membranes generally, but especially that of the urinary tract, are chiefly affected by this remedy. Frequent urination of a nervous origin. Leucorrhœa in little girls.

Urine

Urethritis, with much mucus, especially in women. Cutting after urination, with constriction. Hæmaturia. Prostatitis, with thick yellow discharge. Cystitis.

Respiratory

Catarrh of nose and throat, with fetid odor and expectoration. Mucus trickles from posterior nares. Rawness of throat and hoarseness.

Compare: Cucurbita; Copaiva; Piper meth; Sandal.

Dose

Second and third attenuation.

Leaders

This remedy, also fallen into disrepute from its empirical use in the old school, has an important place in the therapeutics of gonorrhœa, if after the first or inflammatory stage is passed under the usual remedies for that stage there still remains burning in the urethra after urination and the discharge remains thick, yellow or puslike. Notwithstanding Mercurius or Pulsatilla, we may find our remedy in Cubeba. I have made some fine cures myself in such cases. With Pulsatilla the discharge, while thick, or yellow, or green, is more likely to be bland, as it is on mucous membranes elsewhere. Mercury has a similar discharge, but all the symptoms are worse at night. When the discharge becomes thin (gleety) neither of these remedies are, appropriate.

Right here let us call attention to another remedy which ought to be mentioned in connection with the treatment of gonorrhœa.

Characteristics

Cubeba corresponds to catarrh. It is an old-world remedy for gonorrhœa and gleet, but it affects the mucous membrane of the nose, air passages and intestines, as well as that of the urino-genital tract. It acts well in persons of bilious temperament with tendency to constipation. Some of its most characteristic symptoms are: Burning in throat with dryness, constant need to swallow saliva; burning in stomach; in abdomen; in rectum; in urethra; in fossa navicularis. Nash defines its place in gonorrhœa thus: "After the inflammatory stage is passed under the usual remedies for that stage, if there still remains burning in the urethra after micturition, and the discharge remains thick, yellow, or pus-like (with Puls . the discharge is bland ; with Merc . all symptoms are < at night). Thin (gleety) discharge does not correspond to any of the three." Prickling in soles of feet. There is a sensation of downward weight and pressure in region of femoral ring, < on walking, riding, or lifting. Stools and colic are < at night in bed; > getting up and walking about. Skin diseases concomitant with kidney affections. Urine foaming, albuminous, bloody. Acrid leucorrhœa in children.

Relations

Compare: Copaiva (with which it is compatible). Piper methyst. Piper nigrum and Matico (botanical). Capsic; Canth. (irritable bladder in females); Tereb.; Cannab. sat.; Iod. (membranous croup).

Mind

Exaltation of temper and of the mental faculties. ─ On violent agitations he was aroused for a moment; uttered some incoherent expression and sank back into a comatose sleep.

Eyes

Eyes rolled upward, injected; pupils contracted to a pin-point.

Face

Face red and swollen. ─ Veins of forehead and temples turgid. ─ Lips dark purple. ─ Lips puffed, dry and shining. ─ Extraordinary twist of mouth to one side every time he attempts to speak or smile.

Teeth

Teeth slightly coated with brown sordes.

Mouth

Mouth containing viscid frothy saliva. ─ Aphthæ of lips and gums. ─ Tongue furred and moist or very white.

Throat

Constant need to swallow saliva to relieve dryness and burning in throat and larynx.

Stomach

Nausea and vomiting. ─ Burning pain in stomach.

Abdomen

Burning in abdomen. ─ Femoral hernia. ─ Colic.

Stool and Anus

Female Sexual Organs

Urethro-vaginitis, severe and of long standing, with acute pains and abundant discharge. ─ Leucorrhœa profuse, yellow, greenish, very acrid, very offensive; erythema of inner surfaces of thighs, pruritus vulvæ, intense desire for coitus; small burning pimples; womb swollen and painful; menses too early, preceded and followed by leucorrhœa, or in small quantity and consisting mostly of leucorrhœa. ─ Acrid leucorrhœa of children.

Respiratory Organs

Respiration slow, short and gasping; hurried and noisy. ─ Chest feels full. ─ Sense of suffocation. ─ False membranes in larynx. ─ Voice harsh and wheezing. ─ Incessant bronchial cough; < evening, by heat, in open air; throat dry and parched; hurried, noisy respiration. ─ Harsh cough. ─ Barking, croupy cough.

Pulse

Pulse very slow, moderately full, but extinguished by least pressure.

Limbs

Sensation of heat in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. ─ Numbness of fingers and toes.

Skin

Skin warm, moist, clammy. ─ Feverish tingling heat over whole body. ─ A flush of red over whole body. ─ General eruption of roseolous papules without fever or itching, confluent on face, buttocks and upper limbs, more scant on lower. ─ Intense itching. ─ Severe urticaria febrilis.

Fever

Heat flushes on face soles of feet and palms of hands. ─ Fever with heat at pit of stomach. ─ Cold sweat in chest and back; burning in abdomen (in croup).

Mind

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Disagreeable or acid eructations.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Uneasiness, heat at pit of stomach, and fever.
Burning pain in stomach ; feeling of warmth in epigastric region.
Dyspepsia of long standing ; sourness after eating, and distress of stomach from food.

Abdomen and loins

Abdomen distended and very sensitive.
Burning in abdomen. θ Croup.
Burning and pressure about navel.
Sensation of weight, pressure, and pain in region of femoral ring, similar to that which precedes occurrence of femoral hernia ; downward pressure and weight < after walking, riding, lifting, and especially before and during menstrual period.

Before stool : cutting pains in hypogastrium.
During stool : tenesmus ; cutting pain ; loud discharges of flatus.
Distressing diarrhœa, with headache and griping.
Stools : blackish, yellowish, fecal ; bilious ; yellow, transparent, mucous ; mingled with whitish, shining particles, looking like kernels of rice ; bloody mucus ; frequent (dysenteric) ; copious ; bilious and fecal ; involuntary ; < at night in bed ; > from rising from bed and moving about (colic).
Countenance fallen, indicating great suffering ; discharges every half hour of transparent slime mixed with blood ; before stool severe griping pains in bowels, with backache ; with stool, the same, and urging to urinate ; after stool, long-continued tenesmus, and relief of pains, except heavy dull pain in back and bowels ; tongue flabby, white, furred ; throat dry ; little thirst < ; from food or drink. θ Dysentery.
Stools of colorless, transparent slime, mixed with bright blood, and plentifully interspersed with shining, white bodies, the shape of rice kernels. θ Dysentery.
Diarrhœa, with rumbling and cutting in abdomen and burning in rectum.

Urinary organs

Chronic cystitis ; cutting and constriction after micturition ; urine increased in quantity, deepened in color ; hæmaturia.
Urethritis (accompanied by vesical irritability) of females, especially of married women ; feeling of fulness in bladder with desire to urinate every ten or fifteen minutes, with smarting in urethra during micturition, which is very scanty, but a few drops passing at a time, and followed by vesical tenesmus ; filaments of ropy mucus escaping with first or last drops of urine.

Urethro-vaginitis, severe and of long standing, with acute pains and abundant discharge.

False membranes, thick and of a dark shade, principally in larynx ; respiration noisy and panting ; sensation as if throat was choked up, with heaviness of head ; danger of suffocation ; voice harsh and wheezing.

Respiration

Respiration hurried and noisy.
Respiration impeded, difficult, with crepitant rales ; great fulness of chest ; dyspnœa and sense of suffocation.

Cough

Incessant bronchial cough ; < evening, by heat, and in open air ; throat dry and parched ; hurried and noisy respiration.
Harsh cough, which seems to tear and rupture the bronchi ; expectoration difficult and painful, or yellow-greenish, rusty, streaked with blood ; hæmoptysis, especially evenings.
Barking and croupy cough, with feeling as of a foreign body in larynx.
Cough with coryza and hoarseness, during and after cough cold sweat upon breast and back, burning in abdomen.

Inner chest and lungs

Burning and tearing pain in chest ; severe cough.
Pulmonary catarrh ; hæmoptysis, particularly in evenings. θ Phthisis pulmonalis.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Pulse full, frequent.
Soft, slow pulse, weak and small.
Pulse irregular, suspending two or three beats each minute, sometimes slow, at intervals hurried, not exceeding 84.

Upper limbs

Acute, deep-seated pain in wrists, speedily followed by redness and swelling ; stiffness of wrist and thickening around joint.

Lower limbs

Pricking sensation in soles of feet.

Limbs in general

Sensation of heat in palms of hands and soles of feet.
Numbness of fingers and toes.
