Common name

Nitrate of Uranium

General

Causes glycosuria and increased urine. Is known to produce nephritis, diabetes, degeneration of the liver, high blood pressure and dropsy. Its therapeutic keynote is great emaciation, debility and tendency to ascites and general dropsy. Backache and delayed menses. Dry mucous membranes and skin.

Head

Ill-tempered; dull, heavy pain. Nostrils sore, with purulent, acrid discharge. Mental depression.

Eyes

Lids inflamed and agglutinated; styes.

Stomach

Excessive thirst; nausea; vomiting. Ravenous appetite; eating followed by flatulence. Boring pain in pyloric region. Gastric and duodenal ulcers. Burning pain. Abdomen bloated. Gas, second only to Lycop.

Urinary

Copious urination. Diuresis. Incontinence of urine. Diabetes. Emaciation and tympanites. Burning in urethra, with very acid urine. Unable to retain urine without pain. Enuresis (Mullein oil).

Male

Complete impotency, with nocturnal emissions. Organs cold, relaxed sweaty.

Relationship

Compare: Syzygium; Phos ac; Lact ac; Arg nit; Kali bich; Ars; Phloridzin (a glucosidal principle obtained from the bark of the root of the apple and other fruit trees. Produces diabetes and fatty degeneration of the liver; intermittent fever. Daily doses, 15 grains. Phlorizin causes glycosuria. No hyperglycemia results. It compels the secretory epithelium of the kidney to break down serum albumin into sugar. There is no increase in blood sugar).

Characteristics

Uranium belongs to the Chromium group of elements. Ur. nit . was proved by E. T. Blake, whose monograph on the salt forms part of the Hahnemann Materia Medica . Blake's proving was suggested by the observation of an old-school experimenter, Leconte, who found sugar in the urine of dogs slowly poisoned with Ur. nit . Blake was not very successful in producing sugar, but his proving is not any less valuable on that account, and clinical use has filled out the picture. Many cases of diabetes have been relieved or cured by Ur. nit ., usually in the lower attenuations. In a case of diabetes insipidus of mine, in a young girl, Ur. nit . 30 gave more relief than any other remedy. Excessive thirst, polyuria, and dry tongue are the indications. Glycosuria is by no means an essential part of the indications for Ur. nit . In some of the animals experimented on by Blake the pylorus was found to be affected. With this the symptoms of the proving correspond, and Ur. nit . has cured both pyloric and gastric ulcer. One case ( N. A. J. H ., Aug., 1890) in a married woman was cured with 5-gr. doses of the 2x. Patient was weak and emaciated; vomited mucus mixed with blood and coffee-ground matter, and passed dark, tarry stools; sensitive and tender over region of pylorus. Sensations are: As if blood were flowing to head. As if he had taken cold with headache. The left side was more affected than the right. Many symptoms were < at night. Head < walking. > Deep inspiration.

Mind

Ill-humour; and not feeling well all day.

Head

Vertigo twice in evening. ─ Head heavy on waking. ─ Pain: in forehead; over l. eye; in forehead and occiput in evening; in temple; in occipital protuberances; in occiput on walking. ─ Neuralgia on posterior edge of l. temporal bone (formerly on r.) from 2 till 4 p.m. leaving dull aching, neuralgia woke me at 1 a.m. that night, lasted an hour and prevented sleep, ill from the pain during next day, two days later pain in old place (r. side) came on gradually, > by dinner.

Eyes

Stye in l. upper lid. ─ (Œdema of lower lids worse than usual.). ─ Lids inflamed, agglutinated. ─ Shooting from r. orbit to occipital protuberance in evening. ─ Pain over l. eye.

Nose

Itching in nose. ─ L. nostril stuffed. ─ Dry coryza.

Mouth

Painless ulcer, with one elevated side, in mouth opposite l. anterior upper molar, < evening. ─ Acid saliva.

Throat

Hawking of tenacious mucus. ─ Contracted feeling in throat.

Appetite

Appetite lost; (during menses). ─ Craves raw ham and tea.

Stomach

Eructations; tasteless; putrid at 11 and 3 o'clock. ─ Indigestion in afternoon a quarter of an hour before dinner, with gnawing sinking at cardiac end of stomach, not hungry nor faint. ─ Dyspepsia, flatus after food, acidity, pain from cardiac end of stomach to suprarenal region, > movement, lasted all day, bowels slightly moved, pale clay-coloured fæces (query, if from the drug, as I had had similar but slighter attacks), afterwards epigastric pain as above returned, > by food, with occasional twisting-screwing feeling lower down. ─ (Gastric and duodenal ulcers. ─ Recurring hæmatemesis.)

Abdomen

Flatus; abdomen bloated. ─ Borborygmi. ─ Sharp colic, with tenesmus and with raw feeling in rectum, afterwards in sleep unconscious seminal emission. ─ Enteritis and peritonitis with meteorism; great prostration.

Stool

Urging in rectum and bladder, waking me at 2 a.m., borborygmi, soft stool. ─ Stool twice in one day. ─ Constipation. ─ Pruritus ani.

Urinary Organs

Sore pain in vesical region in evening. ─ Urine contained bile. ─ Urine high-coloured, a few lithates on standing. ─ It produces acute parenchymatous nephritis; sugar is found in the urine, this generally does not come on until after albumen has appeared; glycosuria is very characteristic and persistent; it also produces at times a large amount of oxalate of lime.". ─ Profuse nocturnal urination. ─ Urination profuse, painful, pale milky. ─ Acute and chronic diseases of adults. ─ Diabetes insipidus. ─ Diabetes mellitus. ─ Nocturnal enuresis. ─ Urine greenish and smelling fishy.

Male Sexual Organs

Completely impotent with nocturnal emissions; organs cold, relaxed, sweaty.

Female Sexual Organs

During menses: vertigo; faint; flushing of upper part of body. ─ No menstrual flow during diabetic attack; pale, anæmic; craves raw ham and tea. ─ Excessive secretion of milk.

Respiratory Organs

Bronchitis, with copious mucous expectoration and much emaciation; chronic colds. ─ Cough with purulent discharge from l. nostril; lung infiltrated with grey tubercle.

Chest

Intermittent pain radiating from l. side to ensiform cartilage; < fasting.

Back

Loins stiff. ─ (Pain at lower angle of l. scapula < deep inspiration.)

Limbs

White vesicles on arms and legs with red areolæ; burn and itch.

Generalities

Extreme languor; on rising from bed. ─ Feeling as if he had taken cold.

Skin

Epithelioma; lupus excedens; ecchymoses.

Sleep

Night restless with shivering and heat. ─ Languor.

General

Uranium nitrate. UO 2 2NO 3 6H 2 O.
A salt prepared from pitch blende. The minerals which contain Uranium are found in the lead and silver mines of Bohemia and Saxony, Bavaria, and in France near Limoges.
The triturations are made from the pure nitrate.

Mind

Sensorium

Vertigo ; heaviness of head ; restless at night, with shivering.

Inner head

Head heavy on waking ; general languor ; aching at occipital protuberance.
Pain shooting from right orbit to occipital protuberance in evening.
Frontal headache.
Dull aching in right temple.
Slight pain over left eye, with contracted feeling in throat, and eructations, followed by diuresis.
Heavy, burning pain in right side of vertex ; fulness of head and sensation of blood flowing to that part, before eating.
Giddy, faint ; flushing of upper body during catamenia.
Headache in left temple, with feeling as if he had taken cold.
Severe pain at posterior edge of right and left temporal bones.
Headache ; dull, heavy pains in forehead, right temple and occiput.

Sight and eyes

Pain over left eye.
Eyelids inflamed and agglutinated ; glands enlarged.
Child 12 days old, had from birth yellow discharge from l. eye, causing adhesion of lids, left eye red and watery ; afterward same kind of discharge from right eye, but less ; discharge chiefly in inner canthus.

Smell and nose

Nostrils sore with purulent, acrid discharge ; chronic catarrh.
Dry coryza ; left nostril stuffed.
Itching in nose, small scab in right nostril, purulent discharge from left nostril.
Scabbing of inner nostril, chronic.

Inner mouth

Ulcers in buccal cavity, with copious salivation ; nausea and great thirst.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Loss of appetite. θ During catamenia.
Craves raw ham and tea ; amenorrhœa. θ Diabetes.

Eating and drinking

Excessive thirst, emaciation. θ Diabetes.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Much nausea ; vomiting ; intermittent vomiting, with great thirst.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Boring pain in pyloric region.
Dyspepsia, intermittent attacks of pain, with sinking at epigastrium and acid eructations, flatulency and copious urination.
Dyspeptic feelings quarter of an hour before dinner, with gnawing sinking at cardiac end of stomach ; but without hunger or faintness.
Gastric and duodenal ulcers.
Recurring hematemesis. θ Gastric ulcer.

Abdomen and loins

Abdomen bloated ; slight diarrhœa ; sharp colic and tenesmus, with burning in rectum.
Enteritis and peritonitis, with meteorism ; great prostration.
Peritonitis followed by copious effusion.

Urinary organs

A corpulent, temperate old man had constantly increasing debility and emaciation ; œdema of legs ; great pain and weariness of legs ; crawling and formication of limbs ; clammy state of mouth and tongue ; tongue coated with white fur ; sensation of dryness in mouth and fauces, with intense thirst ; severe acid dyspepsia ; burning, cramps and faintness in pit of stomach ; bowels constipated, feces pale, odorless and dry ; constant desire to urinate ; enormous quantity of urine (sixteen pints in twenty-four hours) ; perspiration and breath have a sweet odor ; skin dry and hard ; night sweats ; pulse 90, small (greatly relieved). θ Diabetes.
Profuse nocturnal urination ; since six months, in a man æt. 40, accompanied by burning and scalding ; urine milky at times, often straw-colored, fetid, voids ten to twelve pints in twenty-four hours ; dispirited, morose ; constipation ; mouth dry ; saliva tenacious ; tongue coated white ; good appetite, but distress after eating ; constant faintness at stomach, even after a hearty meal ; debility ; renal pain.
Urination profuse, painful, pale, milky, with ammoniacal odor ; nocturnal urination frequent ; great debility ; night sweats ; constant pain and soreness in lumbar region ; legs ache and feel heavy and weary ; < toward evening ; almost complete loss of sexual power, organs cold, relaxed and sweaty ; afternoon fever ; great thirst ; canine hunger ; bloated abdomen and constipation. θ Albuminuria.
A delicate, nervous woman had sudden attacks of diuresis, followed by scanty urine, dark-colored, with fever.
Constipation ; distressing thirst ; canine hunger ; tongue red ; loss of sleep (improved). θ Diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes : in two cases specific gravity decreased ; in one from 1042 to 1030, in other from 1039 to 1031 ; thirst, hunger and quantity of urine decreased greatly.
Diabetes mellitus ; five cases improved.
Incontinence of urine at night and frequency during day.
A boy, æt. 3, pale, dark circles around eyes ; color in cheeks changes to deep red ; exceedingly restless at night with fever ; urine profuse and very pale ; appetite capricious. θ Diabetes mellitus.
A man, æt. 70, hale and hearty for his age ; since three years has to urinate frequently and loses flesh ; drinks a great deal to assuage his constant thirst. θ Diabetes mellitus.
A man, æt. 52, fat and full-blooded, intense thirst, had to get up several times at night to drink ; good appetite, loses strength ; passes large quantities of urine, giving a specific gravity of 1044, and containing 85 grs. glucose per litre.
Commenced to decline five years ago and has been gradually growing < ; could not walk ; was entirely colorless, not slightest appearance of blood in lips, tongue, ears or over entire surface ; eyes sunken ; cheek bones prominent ; emaciation ; acidity of stomach ; constipation ; hemorrhoids ; palpitation ; inordinate thirst ; roaring in ears, with fainting spells ; tenderness of spine near and extending to kidneys ; eight to ten quarts of urine in twenty-four hours. θ Diabetes.
For three months getting thinner every day ; cannot eat enough to satisfy craving ; excessive thirst, especially at night, drinking four to six quarts of water in twentyfour hours ; abundant flow of urine ; has to empty pot de chambre two or three times a night ; urine contains sugar.
Acute and chronic diuresis of children and adults.
Incontinence of urine at night, from worms ; urine often excoriating.
Burning in urethra, with very acid urine ; urinary tenesmus.
Nocturnal enuresis. θ Albuminuria.
Urine greenish and smelling fishy.
Weakness of bladder from infancy ; unable to retain urine without extreme pain, amounting almost to spasms during day ; at night passed it freely without waking, and in cold weather in very large quantities ; on taking cold, bloating of bowels and extremities, also of face ; some tenderness of bowels, with frequent pain in left side ; appetite poor, and extremely dainty, craving sweets ; always complaining of deranged stomach ; very thin and pale.

Intermittent attacks : of pain with dyspepsia.

Locality and direction

Left : pain over eye ; headache in temple ; adherence of eyelids ; nostrils stuffed ; purulent discharge from nose ; pain at angle of scapula.
Right : aching in temple ; burning in vertex ; scab in nostril.

Sensations

As if blood were flowing to head ; as if he had taken cold with headache.
Pain : over left eye ; in renal region ; in left side ; at lower angle of left scapula.

Great emaciation ; diabetes ; tendency to general dropsy ; effusion of serum from all serous membranes, especially pleura and peritoneum.
Diabetes mellitus and insipidus ; Bright's disease, and kindred renal maladies ; contracted, gouty kidneys, with gastric disturbances ; irritable condition of renal plexus, of sympathetic.
