Common name

Carbonate of Strontia (STRONTIA)

General

Rheumatic pains, chronic sprains, stenosis of œsophagus. Pains make patient faint or sick all over. Chronic sequelæ of hæmorrhages, after operations with much oozing of blood and coldness and prostration. Arterio-sclerosis. High blood pressure with flushed face pulsating arteries, threatened apoplexy. Violent involuntary starts. Affections of bones, especially femur. Restlessness at night, smothering feeling. For shock after surgical operations. Neuritis, great sensitiveness to cold.

Head

Vertigo with headache and nausea. Distensive pressure. Aches from nape of neck, spreading upwards; better wrapping head up warmly (Sil). Flushes in face; violent pulsating. Supraorbital neuralgia; pains increase and decrease slowly (Stann). Bloody crusts in nose. Face red; burns, itches. Itching, redness and burning of nose.

Eyes

Burning and redness of eyes. Pain and lachrymation on using eyes, with dancing and chromatic alterations of objects looked at.

Stomach

Loss of appetite, aversion to meat, craves bread and beer. Food tasteless. Eructations after eating. Hiccough causes chest pains; cardialgia.

Abdomen

Sticking in abdominal ring. Diarrhœa; worse at night; continuous urging; better towards morning. Burning in anus lasts a long time after stool (Ratanh). Uncomfortable fullness and swelling of abdomen.

Extremities

Sciatica with œdema of ankle. Rheumatic pain in right shoulder. Rheumatism with diarrhœa. Gnawing as if in marrow of bones. Cramps in calves and soles. Chronic spasms, particularly of ankle-joint. Œdematous swelling. Icy-cold feet. Rheumatic pains, especially in joints. Veins of hands engorged.

Fever

Heat, with aversion to uncover or undress.

Skin

Moist, itching, burning eruption; better in open air, especially warm sunshine. Sprains of ankle-joint, with œdema. Violent perspiration at night.

Modalities

Better immersing in hot water; worse, change of weather; from being quiet; when beginning to move; great sensitiveness to cold.

Relationship

Compare: Arnica; Ruta; Sil; Baryta c; Carbo; Stront jodat (arterio-sclerosis). Strontium brom (often gives excellent results where a bromide is indicated. Vomiting of pregnancy. Nervous dyspepsia. It is anti-fermentative and neutralizes excessive acidity). Stront nit (Morbid cravings; headache and eczema behind ears).

Sixth trituration and thirtieth potency.

Mind and Disposition

Ill-humor with inclination to anger and impetuosity. Great forgetfulness.

Head

Tension from the vertex to the upper jaw as if the head were expanded from within, and as if the scalp were too tight, worse in the evening when lying low with the head, slowly increasing and decreasing, better from heat. Stitches in the head. Burning in the forehead. Chilliness over the scalp and upper part of the back, worse in the evening, at night, and in the cold air. Tension on the head (externally and internally), worse in the evening, and from cold, better from warmth, especially in the heat of the sun. Sensation of heat of the head and face, with red face, anxiety, and sleepiness.

Eyes

Burning in the eyes. Pressing pain on the upper surface of the eyes. Pressing in the eyes after rubbing them, which causes one to see red and blue margins. Green spots before the eyes in the dark. Luminous vibrations before the eyes.

Nose

Dark, bloody scabs are blown from the nose.

Face

Face red, burning hot. Tearing pain in the malar bone, cheeks, and lower jaw. Violent boring pain in the (right) malar bone.

Mouth and Throat

Sensation in the teeth as if screwed together. Violent tearing in the teeth after previously increased saliva in the mouth. Sensation of numbness in the mouth (early on waking). Heat emanating from the mouth and nose, with thirst. The fauces are inflamed and painful (stinging) during deglutition.

Stomach and Abdomen

Hunger soon after dinner. Violent thirst, especially for beer. Taste in the mouth like earth. Nausea, with burning heat in the face. Pressure in the stomach, relieved by eating. Colic with diarrhœa and chilliness.

Stool and Anus

Stool retarded, compact and in large lumps ; is expelled with great effort and violent pain in the anus. After stool, contractive sensation in the rectum ; burning at the anus. Diarrhœa of yellow water.

Urinary Organs

Urine pale, strongly smelling of ammonium.

Sexual Organs

Women. Menstruation retarded, the discharge being serous at first, later clots of blood are passed. Menses too early and of too short a duration.

Respiratory Organs

Violent dry cough from irritation in the larynx at night. Dyspnœa, with hot, red face while walking.

Back

Sensations as if bruised in the back and sacrum, worse from stooping and when touched.

Sleep

When going to sleep twitching and starting.

Generalities

Rheumatic pains, especially in the joints, worse in the evening and at night in bed. Great emaciation. Immovability of the limbs (on one, the right, side of the body) like paralysis, in the evening. Most of the symptoms can hardly be determined as to locality, but seem to be in the marrow of the bones. One side of the body is generally only affected (right side).

Fever

Pulse full and hard, with violent pulsation in the arteries. Chill in the forenoon, descending from the sacrum to the posterior part of the thighs. Chilliness from the head over the shoulder-blades. Dry heat at night with thirst. Heat which seems to stream from the mouth and nostrils. Perspiration during the morning hours. Perspiration at night, mostly on the affected parts, with increased pain when uncovering them.

Skin

Tension of the skin on various parts in the evening in bed. Itching which grows worse from scratching.

Conditions

The rheumatic pains are worse in the evening and at night. Trembling sensation in the body, and debility worse in the evening (and morning). The pains and ailments increase gradually and decrease in the same manner. When the pains cease, the itching begins, and vice versa. Aggravation; in the evening and at night ; from cold ; from denudation ; from water and washing. Amelioration; in the open air, especially in the heat of the sun ; from warmth in general.

Apprehensive and anxious, as from a bad conscience.

Sensorium

Inner head

Burning in forehead.
Threatening apoplexy, with violent congestion of head ; hot, red face every time patient walks ; exertion increases circulation toward head ; some erethism of chest ; smothering feeling about heart ; cannot rest ; feeling as of a load on chest ; during climaxis ; > wrapping head up warmly, cannot bear least draft of air.

Teeth and gums

Front teeth feel on edge.
Violent clawing in teeth.
A screwing-together sensation in teeth.
Jerking, tearing pain in teeth and in roots.
Swelling, burning, and stitches in gums.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste : bitter, in morning ; dry, earthy.
Tongue : tip painful ; coated with mucus, feeling dry.

Inner mouth

Bad odor from mouth.
Mouth slimy, or dry on awaking.
Sensation of numbness in mouth, early on waking.
Heat emanating from mouth and nose, with thirst.
Fauces inflamed and painful (stinging) during deglutition.

Palate and throat

Rawness and dryness provoke hawking and hacking cough.
Pain in left side of throat on swallowing.
Itching in pharynx, on swallowing.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

No appetite ; meat disgusts him.
Hunger soon after dinner.
Violent thirst, especially for beer.

Pressure in stomach ; > by eating ; < on walking.
Severe pressure in stomach, after eating ; chronic.
Constriction in stomach, with uprisings of clear water.
Burrowing in stomach and upper abdomen.
Twinging feeling in stomach.
Cutting in epigastric region.

Hypochondria

Pressive bruised pain in hypochondria.

Abdomen and loins

Colic with flatulent distension, diarrhœa, and chilliness.

Stools and rectum

Diarrhœa of yellow water.
Diarrhœa, < at night, is scarcely off vessel before he must return, > toward morning, at 3or 4o'clock.
Stool retarded, compact and in large lumps ; expelled with great effort and violent pain in anus.
After stool : contractive sensation in rectum ; burning at anus.

Urinary organs

Urine : pale, strongly smelling of ammonia ; diminished.

Female sexual organs

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Hoarse voice.
Irritation in larynx causes violent dry cough at night.

Respiration

Dyspnœa, with hot, red face, while walking.

Cough

Cough : constant, < at night ; short, now and then with pressive pain in chest ; dry, hacking, in evening ; from irritation in larynx or trachea.

Inner chest and lungs

In chest : constriction ; pressive pain, especially on motion.
Spasmodic drawing and clawing ; stitches on coughing and inspiring.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Dull intermitting pressure in precordial region.
Violent beating of arteries and of heart.

Outer chest

Sternum painful to touch ; burning in left side, extending upward ; pressure ; pressive pain beneath ; lightning stitches from both sides through chest, in a vertical direction.
Stitches below ensiform cartilage.
Drawing pain in right pectoral muscles.

Neck and back

Tearing tension in nape of neck, as if tendons were drawn up.
Drawing, sticking pain in small of back.
Sensation as if bruised in back and sacrum, < from stooping and when touched.
Slight drawing pain along spine in afternoon, changes to a seated, dull tearing in joints of legs, < by walking.

Upper limbs

Painful paralytic sensation in left shoulder, and elbow joint, at night.
Constant burning pain in right shoulder joint.
Tearing rheumatic pains in shoulders and arms, particularly in joints.
Veins of arms and hands injected and tense ; prostration ; ill-humor.
Weakness of right arm as if all power had left it, > on motion.
Violent tearing pains in joints of right arm, < in evening, in bed ; left arm slightly affected.
Trembling and numbness of fingers.

Lower limbs

Rheumatic, paralytic pain, tearing, drawing, jerking ; gnawing as if in marrow of bones.
Swelling and caries of femur, usually in scrofulous children ; diarrhœa.
Cramps in calves and soles of feet, especially in persons who suffer from cold feet.
Chronic sprains, particularly of ankle joint, after failure of Ruta and Arnica ; œdema about joint.
Œdematous swelling of right foot, sprained some years ago (Bovista in some cases).
Sensation of icy coldness on outer surface of calf, the length of a finger.
Icy-cold feet in evening.

Limbs in general

When going to sleep : twitching and starting ; jerk through body awakens her.
Dreams : of fire ; grieving ; filled with joy.

Time

Morning : nausea ; taste bitter ; diarrhœa < toward 2or 3o'clock ; great weakness ; perspiration ; trembling sensation in body <.
Forenoon : chill.
Noon : nausea, with pressive headache in left side.
Afternoon : nausea, with sticking headache ; drawing pain along spine.
