Keynote

Nervous persons who dread a storm and are particularly afraid of thunder; < before a storm, especially an electrical storm (Nat. c., Phos., Psor., Sil.). Toothache, every spring and fall during sharp east winds; worse from change of weather, thunderstorm, windy weather. Acute inflammatory swelling of joints, wandering from one joint to another; severe at night; < in rest and during rough stormy weather (Kalm.). Rheumatic drawing, tearing pains in all the limbs, worse at rest and in wet, cold windy weather (Rhus). Cannot get sleep or remain asleep unless legs are crossed. General

We think of this remedy chiefly for sufferings that are made worse in windy weather, even if the patient be not exposed to it; he may be in bed or in a warm comfortable room, but the blowing of the wind aggravates the symptoms.

Generalities

Affections in general of the right upper extremities; right abdominal ring; left side of the nose; testes; right lower extremity; inner surface of the thigh. Serous cysts in the vagina. Induration or swelling of the testicles particularly of the right one. Diarrhœa after eating fruits, or from wet cold weather; flatulent colic, especially if it comes on in windy, stormy weather. Arthritic nodes.

Sensations

Dragging up or rotting sensation; crawling of the skin or over the skin like ants; toothache which ceases suddenly, beginning again in two or three hours; feeling of heaviness in the stomach after drinking cold water.

Rheumatic and gouty symptoms well marked. Rheumatism in the hot season. The modality (worse before a storm) is a true guiding symptom.

Mind

Dread of a storm; particularly afraid of thunder. Forgetful.

Male

Testicles, worse left, swollen, painful, drawn up. Orchitis; glands feel crushed. Induration and swelling of testes after gonorrhœa. Hydrocele (Sil).

Extremities

Joints swollen. Gouty inflammation of great toe-joint. Rheumatic tearing in all limbs, especially right side; worse, at rest and in stormy weather. Stiffness of neck. Pain in shoulders, arms, wrists; worse when at rest. Pains in bones in spots, and reappear by change of weather. Cannot sleep unless legs are crossed.

Modalities

Leaders

Will naturally come in for notice while we are upon weather remedies. Like Dulcamara, its strongest characteristic is in its modality, "aggravation in wet stormy weather;" but Rhododendron is particularly worse before the storm, especially a thunder storm; after the storm breaks the patient feels better. The aggravation before the thunder storm does not at all seem to depend on the coldness or dampness, but partially at least on the electric conditions of the atmosphere. This is like Phosphorus, Natrum carb. and Silicea. Rhododendron resembles Rhus toxicod. in that it is worse during rest and better during motion. Again, the pains of Rhododendron, which are aggravated in damp weather, differ from those of Rhus toxicod. in that they seem to be deeper seated and are felt in the periosteum, as in the teeth, and in the bones of the forearm and tibia. These pains are not, however, confined to periosteal membranes, but attack also muscles and ligaments, so as to make it difficult to choose between these remedies.

So we have quite a list of marked wet weather remedies in Dulcamara, Natrum sulphuricum, Rhododendron, Rhus toxicodendron and Nux moschata. (Calcarea phosphorica, wet cold, especially melting snow).

Rhododendron seems to have an especial affinity for the testicles. They are swollen, with drawing contusive pains, which sometimes extend to abdomen and thighs, and they are very sensitive to touch. The remedies most like it are Aurum metall., Clematis erecta, Pulsatilla, Argentum metall., and Spongia. If the affection was of syphilitic origin we would prefer Aurum, especially if the case had been abused by old school mercurialization. If it came from suppressed gonorrhœa, Clematis or Pulsatilla; if of rheumatic origin, Rhododendron. Of course all the case would come into the calculation when making up the perfect picture.

Mind and Disposition

Great indifference, with aversion to all occupation or labor.

Head

Sensation of stupefaction and drowsiness in the head on rising in the morning. Pain in the forehead and temples when lying in bed in the morning ; worse from drinking wine and in wet, cold weather ; better after rising and moving about. The seal feels sore and as if bruised. Violent drawing and tearing in the bones and the periosteum of the cranial bones ; worse when at rest, in the morning, during a thunder-storm and during wet, cold, stormy weather ; better from wrapping the head up warmly, from dry heat and from exercise. Biting-itching on the scalp, especially in the evening.

Eyes

Periodically returning dry burning in the eyes, especially in the bright daylight, and from looking intensely on object. Spasmodic contraction of the eyelids. Dimness of vision when reading and writing.

Ears

Otalgia (right ear) ; violent twitching pain. Sensation in the ear, as from a worm. Buzzing in the ear, aggravated when swallowing.

Nose

Diminished sense of smell. Bleeding of the nose.

Face

Chilliness over the face. Dry, burning lips. Vesicles on the inner side of the under lip, with soreness when eating.

Mouth and Throat

Smarting vesicles under the tongue. Increased accumulation of saliva in the mouth, with dryness of the throat. Constriction and burning in the throat. The food has no taste. Easily satisfied with a small quantity of food ; he feels very uncomfortable afterwards. Nausea, pressure at the stomach and waterbrash, relieved by belching. Pressure in the stomach at night. Heaviness in the stomach after drinking water. Constriction and pressure at the pit of the stomach, with dyspnœa. Pain as from tension under the short ribs. Stitches in the spleen from walking fast. Tension in the region of the spleen when stooping. Distention in the upper part of the abdomen, with dyspnœa, evening and morning. Painful incarceration of flatulence in the hypochondria and in the small of the back. Much rumbling in the abdomen, with eructations and discharge of fetid flatus.

Stool and Anus

Soft, papescent stools, difficult to evacuate with previous violent pressing. Diarrhœa after eating fruit, or from wet, cold weather. Pulsation in the anus. Drawing extending from the rectum to the genitals.

Urinary Organs

Frequent urging to urinate, with drawing in the region of the bladder. Increased secretion of very offensive urine.

Sexual Organs

Men. Sensation of soreness between the genitals and thighs. The testicles are drawn up and are swollen. Sensation of soreness in the testicles extending to the abdomen and the thighs. Scrotum wrinkled, or itching, or sweating. Induration and swelling of the left testicle. Hydrocele. Swelling of the testicles after gonorrhœa. Aversion to an embrace. Women. Menstruation too profuse and too early. Suppressed menstruation.

Respiratory Organs

Dyspnœa from constriction of the chest. Dry, exhausting cough in the morning and evening, with oppression of the chest and roughness in the throat.

Back and Neck

Rheumatic pains in the back and shoulders. Stiffness of the neck and rheumatic pains in the muscles of the neck.

Extremities

Upper. Tearing in the forearms, as if it were in the periosteum, during wet, cold weather. Sensation as if the blood ceased to circulate in the arms. Increased warmth in the hands. Sensation as if the wrists were sprained. Lower. Sensation of soreness in the thighs near the genitals. Sensation of coldness, the skin wrinkles on the lower legs. Dropsical swelling of the lower legs and feet. Rheumatic pains in the lower extremities and feet, as if it were in the periosteum, worse when at rest and during wet cold weather. Unusual coldness of the feet.

Generalities

Rheumatic and arthritic pains (drawing and tearing) in the limbs, mostly on the periosteum, caused by stormy weather, and worse when at rest ; mostly in the forearms and lower legs. Sensation of formication in the limbs. Sensation in the joints as if sprained, with swelling and redness, with arthritis nodosities. Dropsical swellings.

Sleep

Great sleepiness during the day, with burning in the eyes. Deep, heavy sleep before midnight with sleepiness early in the evening, but sleeplessness after midnight ; the morning sleep is disturbed by restlessness in the body and by pain.

Fever

Pulse slow and weak. Chilliness in the morning, in bed, and during the day, if cold air blows on him. Chilliness and heat alternating. Ice-cold feet in the evening after lying down, continuing long. Heat in the evening, with cold feet. Sensation of heat, especially in the hands, although they feel cold to the touch. Feverish heat in the evening, with burning in the face. Profuse debilitating perspiration, especially when exercising in the open air. Offensive smelling perspiration in the axilla. The perspiration smells of spice. While perspiring the skin itches and tingles, like formication.

Skin and Bones

Drawing in the periosteum. Dropsical swellings.

Conditions

Most complaints appear in the morning. Aggravation of the pains during rest, during a thunder storm. The pains are caused and aggravated by wet, cold air.

Characteristics

The golden-flowered Rhododendron is not much known in general medicine, but the Treasury of Botany says of it that "it is narcotic in its properties and is used medicinally." Growing among the fogs and storms of the Siberian mountains; its provings (by Seidel, Wahle, Herzog, Helbig, and others) show that it produces sensitiveness to storms and weather changes; and this gives the grand keynote of its use in medicine. Rhod . disturbs all parts of the economy, producing delirium, fever, headache, neuralgias (earache, toothache), rheumatism, and inflammations, but the chief determining characteristic is that the symptoms come on or are < on the approach of a storm; during a storm; or in wet weather. Sensitiveness to electric changes. It is suited to nervous persons who dread a storm, and are particularly afraid of thunder; < before the storm; affections which come on in the spring and autumn, the seasons of change. This is the chief modality, and will be found in some degree present in a large number of cases requiring Rhod . But Rhod . has other characteristics. Among these is loss of memory: Words are omitted while writing; sudden disappearance of thought; forgets what he is talking about, has to think awhile before he can recall it. Vertigo and confusion, "brain feels as if surrounded by fog." The narcotic reputation of Rhod . is borne out in the provings, for it produced actual intoxication, and also made the provers extraordinarily sensitive to the action of wine. Vertigo occurs whilst lying in bed, and is > by moving about. An intense degree of tinnitus aurium was caused by it, and this, associated with the vertigo, gives Rhod . a place in Ménière's disease. A Peculiar Symptom is: "Loud sounds re-echo long in ears." Like the other Ericaceæ, Rhod . has a strong effect on the kidneys, producing increased urine, with offensive smell, clear, brown red, or of greenish tinge, and, whatever colour it may be, of offensive smell. This offensive smell reappears in the axillary sweat. But the general sweat may be aromatic in odour and not unpleasant. "Formication with sweat" is characteristic. Rhod . sets up diarrhœa; and also a paralytic condition of the rectum, so that an effort is required to expel a soft stool. Pains in rectum extend to genitals; and the male generative organs experience the most intense action of the drug. The scrotum shrinks; testes are retracted; or else they swell (especially at night), and are the seat of a bruised pain, as if they had been crushed violently. These pains are < by touch; < sitting; > moving about. They may be so violent as to arrest breathing. The menses are too early and too profuse; the menses are always accompanied by fever and headache. Menses reappear soon after they have ceased. In one prover Rhod . restored the menses after six months' absence. It has cured cysts in the vagina, and has caused the rupture of an ovarian cyst. Chorea of left leg, arm, and face, < on approach of a storm, has been cured by it. The paralysing effect of Rhod . was exemplified by the poisoning of a flock of sheep from eating the leaves. A number of them died immediately after the administration of stimulants, and the autopsy showed that cause of death was paralysis of the swallowing muscles (T. C. Collings, quoted H. W ., xxix. 158). Cooper cites a parallel case of death from post-diphtheritic paralysis affecting the throat muscles, occurring a few minutes after drinking tea. In both instances the fluid entered the trachea instead of the gullet and caused suffocation. Both sides are affected by Rhod. Symptoms frequently alternate: left and right nostril; burning in uterus and pains in limbs; chilliness and heat. Pains go from within outward. H. S. Budd ( H. R ., xv. 300) relates the case of Mrs. X., 44, married ten years, three children. Neuralgia for three years. Attacks occur usually on Friday or Saturday and last till Monday or Tuesday, but are induced any time by high winds, damp weather, or an approaching storm. Ammonol, Phenacetin, Antikamnia , had all failed, and Passif . only partly relieved, sometimes enabling patient to get sleep. The pain was < after hard work; during any movement; in very cold weather; from hot applications. Intense soreness all over right half of head. Cannot rest on pillow or endure even lightest hairpins when pain is worst. < At night. Intensely nervous and hysterical at being touched , even by accident. During pain increased activity of kidneys, ceasing when pain ceases. Pain greatest in right lower jaw. Sometimes > for an hour by chewing gum or eating. Afraid of thunder. Omits words when writing. Rhod . 16x every hour was given on May 12th. Each dose caused immediate < . Next morning pains stopped suddenly and did not return. On June 7th there was a premonitory twinge, and A powder of Rhod . 1m was given, after which there was complete immunity. E. V. Moffat (quoted Am. H ., xxiii. 268) treated a girl, 10, for neuralgia, which had existed for several years. The patient was of marked gouty heredity, and had been treated by leading old-school doctors in New York. She was well during the summer, but suffered intensely during winter. Pains general and shifting, sometimes intercostal, sometimes sciatic; in bad weather never absent. The last form was prostrating headache, incapacitating her for school work. The eyes were normal. While the sun shone she was comfortable . If it stormed or threatened she was miserable. If she had a headache on a stormy day and the sun came out, in ten minutes she was relieved, and it returned at once if snow or rain came on. A cold day, especially if damp, was almost as bad as a storm. Rhod . Ø, in repeated and increasing doses, cured in three weeks. Colour, spirits, strength returned, and she no longer minded the weather or missed her school. Peculiar Sensations are: Brain as if in a fog. Scalp as if bruised. As if a worm in ear. As if water rushing into ear. As if throat lined with mucus. As from tension under short ribs. Testicle as if violently contused or crushed. As if a fist pressed forcibly against stomach. As if blood ceased to circulate in arms. As if arms asleep. As if feet and legs asleep. As if heavy weights hanging to feet. As of subcutaneous ulceration. Undulating sensation arising from abdomen. Warm undulations in heart. Bruised pains. Pains flying about. Crawling sensations. A Peculiar Symptom in the eyes is: One pupil dilated, the other contracted. There is a splenic stitch on walking fast. The incarcerated flatus is felt in the hypochondria and small of the back. It is not at all unusual to meet this symptom, "Flatus felt in the back," in cases of flatulent indigestion. "Increased warmth of hands even in cold weather" is another peculiar symptom. The symptoms are < by touch (toothache, testicles, chest ─ this sensitiveness is general). Rest < ; motion (especially commencing motion ) > . Face

Shuddering chilliness over face. ─ Violent tearing, jerking faceache, < in wind and changes; > while eating and from warmth. ─ Prosopalgia extends from temple to chin; spreads over r. side of face. ─ Lips dry and burning. ─ Vesicles on the lips (on inner side of under lip), with pains as from excoriation when eating.

Teeth

Toothache with drawing tearing in molars, in cold, damp weather; or on approach of or during a storm; < by touch. ─ Rheumatic toothache radiating from r. lower jaw to teeth. ─ Nocturnal odontalgia with otalgia. ─ Itching in the gums. ─ Swelling and pain as from excoriation between lower gums and cheek.

Mouth

Copious accumulation of saliva in mouth, with dryness of gullet and smarting vesicles under tongue. ─ Greenish coated tongue with bitter, putrid taste.

Throat

Scraping in throat; sensation as if lined with mucus. ─ Constriction and burning sensation in throat.

Appetite

Dulness of taste. ─ Food has no flavour. ─ Augmented thirst. ─ Gnawing, hungry sensation before a meal. ─ Speedy satiety, with good appetite, followed by uneasiness.

Stomach

Nausea, with inclination to vomit, pressure in stomach, and waterbrash, > by eructations. ─ Gulping of rancid or bitter fluid. ─ Empty eructations. ─ Vomiting of green, bitter substances. ─ Vomiting after anything fluid, esp. cold water. ─ Aching (and heaviness) in stomach at night, or after drinking cold water. ─ Contractive pressure in scrobiculus with obstructed respiration. ─ Pressive shootings in pit of stomach and hypochondria.

Abdomen

Spasmodic pains in hypochondria. ─ Pain as from tension under short ribs. ─ Tension in the region of the spleen (when or) after stooping. ─ Shootings in spleen on walking quickly. ─ Distension of abdomen, esp. in upper part, with sensation of fulness, which hinders respiration, morning and evening. ─ Painful incarceration of flatus in hypochondria and loins. ─ Grumbling and borborygmi in abdomen, with risings and expulsion of fetid flatus. ─ Drawing pain in r. and (slighter) l. inguinal ring while sitting.

Stool and Anus

Urgent want to evacuate, with slow evacuation. ─ As soon as he gets out of bed diarrhœa comes on. ─ Difficult evacuation, even of soft fæces. ─ Fæces of consistence of pap. ─ Mucous evacuations. ─ Diarrhœa after eating fruit or in cold, damp weather; food passes undigested. ─ Diarrhœa which does not weaken. ─ Shooting pain in rectum extending to just below ribs. ─ Crawling in anus as from ascarides. ─ Throbbing in anus. ─ Drawing from rectum to genital organs.

Urinary Organs

More frequent want to urinate, with drawing in the region of the bladder and in the groins. ─ Pain in urethra as from subcutaneous ulceration. ─ Increased discharge of a fetid urine. ─ Urine clear, greenish, hot. ─ Twitching and stitches at urethral orifice between acts of micturition.

Male Sexual Organs

Pain as from excoriation between genitals and thighs. ─ Throbbings and shootings under glans. ─ Drawing and pain as from a bruise in testes extending into abdomen and thighs. ─ Testes, esp. epididymis, intensely painful to touch. ─ Testes swollen and retracted. ─ Itching, sweat, and shrinking in scrotum. ─ Transparent swelling of the scrotum, as from hydrocele. ─ Swelling of the testicles after gonorrhœa. ─ Induration of testes; induration and swelling of l. testicle. ─ Contusive pain in first one then in the other testicle. ─ Drawing pain in r. testis and cord, > by motion; sometimes pricking, beginning r. testis, spreading in zigzag manner along perinæum to anus, so violent it arrested breathing. ─ Crawling pain in testes. ─ Increased desire. ─ Aversion to coitus and want of erections. ─ Profuse emission with amorous dreams.

Female Sexual Organs

Suppressed catamenia. ─ Premature and too profuse catamenia. ─ Fever with headache at each menstrual period. ─ Pain in ovaries; < in change of weather. ─ Caused rupture of cyst in r. ovary. ─ Serous cysts in vagina. ─ After parturition, burning in uterus alternately with pains in limbs, fingers flexed.

Respiratory Organs

Catarrh and hoarseness of trachea. ─ Dry, shaking cough, with oppression of chest and roughness of throat, esp. night and morning (in paroxysms from tickling in the trachea). ─ Scraping cough with scanty expectoration of mucus.

Chest

Transient, dull pain from chest to l. hypochondrium when walking fast. ─ Pressure at chest with obstructed respiration. ─ Dyspnœa from constriction of chest. ─ Warm undulation in chest and about the heart. ─ Rush of blood to chest. ─ Bruised pain at chest externally. ─ Knife-like cuttings in l. chest when bending to r. and backward.

Heart

Boring pain in region of heart. ─ Warm undulations at heart. ─ (Heart irritable, pulse weak and quick. ─ R. T. C.). ─ Heart beats stronger. ─ Pulse: slow; feeble, small, and slow.

Neck and Back

Rigidity of nape. ─ Rheumatic tension and drawing in muscles of nape and of neck. ─ Stiff-neck, gums and teeth sore, pains fly about everywhere. ─ Pain in sacrum, becoming intolerable on stooping. ─ Wrenching or contusive pains in back and loins ( < at rest and in rainy weather). ─ Small of back painful when sitting as if back had been bent too long, or as if he had been lying on it too long. ─ Rheumatic drawing and tearing in back and shoulders.

Limbs

Rheumatic and arthritic drawing and tearings as if in the periosteum of limbs, excited by rough weather and < by repose. ─ Wrenching pain and searching drawings in joints, with redness and swelling. ─ Chronic rheumatism affecting the smaller joints and their ligaments. ─ Restlessness, tingling, weakness, and sensation of paralytic stiffness in some of the limbs.

Upper Limbs

Drawing pains in arms in rough weather. ─ Sensation as if the blood did not circulate in arms. ─ Weakness with tingling and heaviness in arms, extending to tips of fingers during repose. ─ Pulling and tearing in forearms and hands as if in periosteum (during wet, cold weather), < during repose. ─ Wrenching pain in joints of hands. ─ Sensation as if the wrists were sprained. ─ On small spot of metacarpal bones painful sensation as if an exostosis would form. ─ Increased heat in hands, even in cold weather. ─ Itching of r. middle and ring fingers with erysipelatous redness.

Lower Limbs

Wrenching pain in joints of hip and knee. ─ Sensation of soreness in thighs near the genitals. ─ Itching of inner surface of thighs. ─ Sensation as if skin were cold and shrivelled in certain parts of the legs. ─ Perspiration on legs. ─ (Dropsical) swelling of legs and feet. ─ Feet and legs as if asleep. ─ Drawing and tearing in legs and feet as if in periosteum; esp. during repose. ─ Excessive coldness of feet, even in a warm room; cannot be got warm in bed; prevents sleep. ─ Pain in tendo-Achillis on stepping. ─ Rheumatic enlargement of great toe mistaken for bunion. ─ Gout with fibrous deposit (not urate of soda). ─ Sensation as if heavy weight were hanging to feet. ─ Corns on feet with shooting pain.

Generalities

We think of this remedy chiefly for the sufferings that are < in windy weather, even if the patient be not exposed to it; he may be in bed or in a warm, comfortable room, but the blowing of the wind < the symptoms. ─ Tendency to faint in young girls of phthisical tendency who grow rapidly and are upset by thunderstorms (R. T. C.). ─ Affections in general of the r. upper extremities; r. abdominal ring; l. side of nose; testes; r. lower extremity; inner surface of thigh. ─ Serous cysts in vagina. ─ Induration or swelling of the testicles, particularly of the r. one. ─ Diarrhœa after eating fruit; flatulent colic. ─ Arthritic nodes. ─ Dragging up or rooting sensation; crawling of the skin or over the skin like ants; toothache which ceases suddenly, beginning again in two or three hours; feeling of heaviness in stomach after drinking cold water. ─ Great dejection and painful weariness after the least exercise. ─ Dropsical swellings. ─ Frequent remission of sufferings, and appearance of them generally in morning. ─ Sufferings excited or < by cold, damp weather, or by the approach of a storm, as also during repose.

Skin

Eruptions. ─ Burning and tearing with erysipelas. ─ Itching, burning, and creeping.

Sleep

Strong disposition to sleep during day, with burning sensation in eyes. ─ Profound sleep before midnight, after having gone to sleep early in evening. ─ Sleeplessness after midnight. ─ Sleep in morning, disturbed by bodily agitation and pain. ─ During sleep oppression of chest, a sort of nightmare.

Fever

Pulse slow and weak. ─ Chilliness in morning in bed and during day if cold air blows on him. ─ Shivering alternately with heat. ─ Augmented heat, esp. in hands. ─ Fever in evening with heat in head, coldness of the feet (after lying down, continuing long), burning sensation in eyes and nose, painful weariness and adipsia, followed by nocturnal heat and sleeplessness. ─ Sensation of heat, esp. in hands, although they feel cold to the touch. ─ Profuse debilitating perspiration, esp. when exercising in the open air. ─ Offensive-smelling perspiration in the axilla. ─ While perspiring the skin itches and tingles, like formication. ─ Perspiration with tingling and itching in skin. ─ Perspiration of an aromatic smell.

Pain in forehead and temples when lying in bed in morning ; < from drinking wine and from wet, cold weather ; > after rising and moving about.
Early in morning in bed, headache which almost deprives him of his senses, > after rising.

Outer head

The scalp feels sore and as if bruised.

Biting itching on scalp, especially in evening.

Sight and eyes

Dimness of vision when reading and writing.
A man about 40 complained of a gradual failure of sight, accompanied by periodically recurring violent pains, involving eyeball, extending to orbit and head, < at approach of storm, > when storm broke out ; rheumatic diathesis ; pupils somewhat
dilated and sluggish, T + 1 in both eyes ; pulsation of retinal veins, but no excavation of optic nerve ; field of vision not circumscribed ; Hm. 1/30 ; vision improved by glasses, but could not be brought above 20/30 ; pain recurred until relieved by the medicine.
Periodical, dry burning in eyes, < in bright daylight and from looking intently.
Burning pain in eyes ; when reading or writing he has a feeling of heat in them.
Ciliary neuralgia, < before a storm.
Insufficiency of internal recti muscles ; darting pains like arrows through eye from head, < before a storm. θ Asthenopia muscularis.
On staring or writing, very hot lachrymation from right eye, and at same time shooting in right eye from within outward.
Spasmodic contraction of eyelids.

Hearing and ears

Otalgia (r. ear) ; violent twitching pain.
Sensation in ear as from a worm.
Buzzing in ear, < when swallowing.
Violent pain in right external ear, commencing in morning and continuing nearly all day.
Tearing sensation in and about right ear.
Constant buzzing in ears and a sensation as if water were rushing into them ; loud sounds re-echo for a long time ; humming and ringing before ears.
Constant tearing pain in ears ; roaring ; stitching, tearing headache ; shortness of breath, < from least motion ; for several years hardness of hearing.
Tinnitus aurium, < right side ; feels pulsation of heart in ear ; sounds in ears as of a gentle downpour of rain, < toward evening ; hears with difficulty the talking around him ; tick of watch not heard 14 inches from right ear and 11 from left ; flushes
of heat at night, pressure in forehead and vertex.
After an arthritic affection of head, twenty years ago, constant ringing and roaring in ears, followed by hardness of hearing, which gradually grew worse, so that for the last ten years could hear nothing unless one called loudly into her ear. θ Dysecoia.
After catching cold, roaring and ringing in ears ; can hear in morning on rising, but as day advances the noises in ears gradually grow more intense, so that in evening can scarcely hear those about him ; buzzing in ears like that of a bee, or noise like that following the
tolling of a bell, at times interrupted by cracking sounds ; noises cease for a time, then begin again ; tick of watch heard on both sides at distance of two feet and two inches.

Smell and nose

Diminished sense of smell.
Bleeding of nose, left side.
Soreness of inner nose, with yellow or black scurf.
Violent sneezing, when rising in morning, with heat in face.
Thin, fluid and profuse discharge from nose, with rheumatic or gouty symptoms.
Stoppage of left half of nose, near root, < in morning before rising ; during day stoppage of left nostril alternates with that of right, but nose is never stopped entirely ; > in open air.

Upper face

Chilliness over face.
Violent tearing, jerking faceache ; < in wind and changes of weather ; > while eating and from warmth.
Prosopalgia ; pain begins in temple and extends to lower jaw and chin ; acute pain extending from temple to temple, < from motion, talking and cold applications.
Violent faceache, spreading over right side of face from teeth and gums, radiating over mouth, eyes and ears, equally violent day and night, during motion and rest ; pains drawing, tearing, jerking ; < by wind and changes of weather ; > from warmth, entirely relieved
while eating and for some time after ; commonly troublesome in Spring and Autumn, the present very severe attack in Winter.

Lower face

Lips dry, burning.
Vesicles on inner side of lower lip, sore when eating.

Teeth and gums

Toothache : with earache ; teeth loose ; snags ; gums swollen ; < from change of weather ; > from warmth and after eating ; great weakness after pain.
Toothache ; the approach of a thunderstorm or cloudy, windy weather is always preceded by a drawing, aching or cutting pain.
Occasional grumbling and tearing in four first anterior molars for a short time ; now in upper, now in lower jaw ; now on right, now on left side.
Transient pain in single teeth, recurring especially in damp weather and before a storm.
Toothache appearing every Spring and Fall during prevalence of a sharp east wind, lasting several weeks ; constant boring in a single tooth ; stitches extending into ear ; pain < on touching tooth ; pain at times intermits, <

Toothache ; pain began in a carious tooth, but finally affected also neighboring teeth ; pain > while chewing and for a short time afterward.

Gulping of a rancid or bitter fluid.
Empty eructations.
Nausea, waterbrash, pressure at stomach, > by belching.
Vomits after fluids, especially cold water ; green, bitter vomit.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Sinking at stomach.
Pressure in stomach at night, after cold drinks.
Constriction and pressure at pit of stomach, with dyspnœa.
Pressing in pit of stomach during and after eating.
After a thorough wetting, pressing pain in left side under short ribs ; > by eating.
Periodical crampy pain under short ribs ; pressing and drawing, with fulness in pit of stomach, with oppression in breathing ; pain as from flatulency in different parts, but especially in left hypochondrium.
Bellyache after eating ; in umbilical region after supper, obliquely over hypochondria ; pressing in pit of stomach after dinner, during and after eating.

Hypochondria

Pain as from tension under short ribs ; periodical crampy pains.
Painful incarceration of flatus in hypochondria and in small of back.
Pressing and drawing, with feeling of repletion in stomach, and oppression of breathing.
Stitches in spleen from walking fast ; tension from stooping.

Abdomen and loins

Distension in upper part of abdomen, with dyspnœa ; evening and morning.
Much rumbling in abdomen, with eructations and discharge of fetid flatus.
Colic at navel, or feeling of repletion after eating.

Stools and rectum

Stool : papescent, yet tardy, requiring much urging ; painless, undigested ; thin, brownish, fecal ; spurting out with force.
Diarrhœa : after meals ; after fruit ; from wet, cold weather ; before a thunderstorm ; in morning, with much flatus ; with pains in limbs.
Dysentery in summer, renewed before a thunderstorm.
Drawing extending from rectum to genitals.
Pulsation in anus.

Urinary organs

Frequent urging to urinate, with drawing in region of bladder.
Greenish urine.
Somewhat increased pale urine has an offensive, acrid odor.
Frequent desire to urinate ; pain in urethra as from subcutaneous ulceration.

Male sexual organs

Desire weak ; aversion to an embrace.
Emissions at night, with amorous dreams, later longcontinued erections.
Testicles : especially epididymis, intensely painful to touch ; soreness extending into abdomen and thighs ; drawn up, swollen, painful ; drawn up when walking, contusive pain.
Violent sticking in right testicle, as if violently contused, in evening, while sitting ; pain disappears when walking, but returns immediately upon sitting down.
Violent, painful drawing in hard, somewhat swollen testes, extending as far as abdomen and thigh, especially on right side.
Drawing, sticking pain in right testicle and spermatic cord, > from motion ; sometimes pain is pricking, commencing in right testicle and spreading in a zig-zag manner along perineum toward anus, lasting some seconds, and so violent that it arrests breathing.
Balanitis ; prepuce distended like a bladder, with integument thin, no pain or fever, little discharge, and no annoyance apart from the increased size.
Scanty, painless, thin discharge from urethra ; swelling of left testicle, with tearing pains therein, extending up spermatic cord ; severe, periodic, tearing, throbbing digging pain in left hip bone, extending to middle of thigh, becoming
almost intolerable when at rest, so that he could not sit or lie in bed at night ; after cohabiting with wife who had fluor albus.
Orchitis, left side, smooth, hard swelling ; preceded by hydrocele.
Chronic orchitis ; testicle indurated, with tendency to atrophy ; feeling in gland as if it were being crushed.
Seventeen years ago had orchitis, right side, after which testicle remained somewhat enlarged, after severe exertion severe pain in small of back, followed in evening by drawing, pressing pain in right testicle which became swollen ; pain >
lying with knees drawn up, < standing ; pain sometimes extends into abdomen and causes tension at right inguinal ring.
Orchitis with fever, from catching cold while dancing, while recovering from an attack of gonorrhœa ; left testicle swollen to size of hen's egg.
Induration and swelling of testicles after gonorrhœa, or with blennorrhœa.
Swelling and hardness of left testicle, following gonorrhœa ; formerly had headache before and thunderstorm.
Farmer, aged. 40, without known cause, had orchitis, treated six months without benefit, swelling increased in size and hardness, so that he could not walk, and penis lay hidden in the tumor ; left testicle size of three fists, very tense, hard, painful to least touch. θ Hydrocele.
Hydrocele : from birth, right side, in a child aged 4 weeks ; as large as a hen's egg, since birth, in a boy aged 1 1/2 years ; left-sided, in a scrofulous child æt. 3 years ; right side, in an infant æt. 1 year ; left side,
in a boy æt. 4 years ; from birth, increasing from year to year, in a boy æt. 7 years ; left side, in a hemorrhoidal subject æt. 60.
Itching and sweating of scrotum.
Soreness or sore sensation between genitals and thighs.

Female sexual organs

Menstruation too profuse and too early ; fever and headache at each menstrual period.
Suppressed menstruation.
Pain in ovaries ; < in changes of weather.
Serous cysts in vagina.
A country-woman, æt. 35, suffered since five years from a voluminous cyst in right ovary ; Rhodod. [6] was employed internally and externally ; about sixth day patient was taken with acute pains in stomach, with a feeling of fluid pouring into abdomen ; vomited
bile ; for three days high fever ; the cyst filled up again ; repeated Rhodod. next month, again a rupture took place in about eight to ten days, with symptoms of subacute peritonitis, after cure of which patient refused to continue treatment.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

After parturition, burning in uterine region, alternating with pains in limbs, fingers spasmodically flexed.

Respiration

Dyspnœa from constriction of chest.

Cough

Cough : dry, exhausting, morning and evening, with oppression of chest and rough throat ; with escape of urine ; dry, excited by tickling in trachea.
Attacks of dry cough ; after an attack has lasted four to five hours, during which time she coughs constantly, there follows either vomiting of a serous, bitter, somewhat slimy fluid, containing no particles of food, or she is so prostrated that she has to
lie down and sleep ; for the next four or six hours feels well and has no cough ; suddenly and without apparent cause sensation of severe pressure and constriction in region of stomach, as if some one was pressing forcibly with fist against stomach, accompanied by a constant and
uncontrollable irritation to cough, arising from epigastrium ; with the pressure in stomach there is a similar, but less severe, sensation in lumbar region of spine, from which place extend drawing, tearing pains at one time into upper, then into lower limbs ; appetite impaired.

Inner chest and lungs

Shooting through left chest to back, when bending back and to right.
A very transient dull pain extending from chest to left hypochondrium, almost like splenetic stitches, when walking fast.
Breath and speech fail from the violence of pleuritic stitches running downward in anterior left chest, after standing on cold ground and getting chilled.
Rheumatic pain in left side below short ribs, continuous and of a pressing nature, after taking cold by getting wet ; > from eating.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Boring pain in region of heart.
Heart's beat stronger.
Pulse slow and weak, or unchanged.

Outer chest

Chest sensitive to touch.

Neck and back

Stiffness of nape of neck, in morning.
Stiffness of nape of neck ; tearing pains in nape of neck, extending thence gradually half-way down back ; < at night and in bed, so that she must rise.
Rheumatic pains in back and shoulders.
Stiff neck, gums and teeth sore, pains fly about everywhere.
Shooting from back to pit of stomach.
Pain from small of back into arms.
Small of back pains, < when sitting and in wet weather.

Upper limbs

Paralytic, rheumatic pain in right shoulder upon which he rests, sometimes extending below elbow and going off by turning to other side.
Violent tearing, boring pain in left shoulder joint.
Severe pain in deltoid muscle, < from motion and from vexation before a thunderstorm.
Drawing pain in arms, < in wet weather.
Sensation as if blood ceased to circulate in arms, hands feel warm.
Sensation of weakness and formication in arms, as if they were asleep, < from heat of bed, exposure to cold and stormy weather.
Tearing : in left forearm, at night ; in right forearm.
About 6 P. M., tearing, cramplike drawing in forearm, as if in periosteum, during wet, cold weather ; violent tearing, boring pain in left shoulder joint, with prickling in fingers. θ Chronic

Sensation as if wrists were sprained.
Pain as if sprained in right wrist joint, impeding motion, < when at rest, in rough weather.
Intensely painful drawing and digging in left wrist joint, in evening, when at rest.
Sudden swelling with tearing pains in right wrist, extending to dorsum of hand ; in a man suffering from condylomata.
Increased warmth in hands.
Itching, obliging to scratch, of middle and ring fingers of l. hand, with erysipelatous redness.

Lower limbs

Sensation of soreness in thighs near genitals.
Severe tearing pains beginning in upper and posterior portion of right thigh and extending down into foot, with sensation of formication in whole limb ; pain < during rest, drives her out of bed early in morning ; foot immediately "goes to
sleep" when sitting down after walking ; must move foot constantly ; pain and stiffness of leg, < mornings.
Periodical tearing pains in lower limbs, particularly about hip joint, < in stormy weather, in rest and at night ; at times swelling and painfulness of finger joints.
Stitching pains in knee and ankle joints ; tension in legs when walking ; constant sensation as if feet and legs were asleep ; < after sitting still, and early in morning on rising ; after an attack of influenza.
White swelling of knee, with intolerable tearing pains, < during rest and at night.
Rheumatic pains in lower extremities and feet, as if in periosteum, < when at rest and during wet, cold weather.
Sensation of coldness, skin wrinkles on legs.
Dropsical swelling of lower legs and feet.
Sensation in lower legs and feet "as if asleep."
Unusual coldness of feet.

Frequent increase of warmth of hands, even in cold weather.

Profuse debilitating sweat, especially when moving about in open air.

Pains

This is a very useful remedy in gouty patients who suffer from rheumatic pains, sometimes wandering from joint to joint, aggravated during rest, aggravated before and during storms, aggravated in cold, wet weather and ameliorated from warm wrapping.

These pains may be in the head or the limbs. It is a great palliative in old people who have suffered long from gout. Rheumatic swelling of joints. Pain in the aponevroses at night, during rest. He can always fortell a thunderstorm. There are tearing, shooting pains. Sore bruised pains. Stiffness of joints, neck and back. Extremely sensitive to cold weather, and aggravated from becoming cold. Paralytic Weakness during rest, yet be is weak from exertion.

Continued motion is his only relief. Painfully sensitive to windy cold weather. Chorea before a storm. General amelioration from motion, even when the painful part is aggravated from, moving the affected part.

Mind

Fear of thunder in nervous persons (Phos.), forgetful.

While talking he forgets what he was talking about. Leaves out words in writing. Aversion to his business. Easily affected by wine.

Head

Violent rheumatic headaches in morning in bed, ameliorated by moving about, by wrapping up the head; aggravated from drinking wine, aggravated in cold wet weather.

Headaches come on before a storm. Pain in temples and forehead. The head feels sore as if bruised. External heat ameliorates the head pains.

Pain in the eyes before a storm, ameliorated by heat and motion. Weakness of the internal recti muscles with stitching pains before a storm.

Violent pains in ear, sometimes tearing, aggravated before a storm. Ameliorated by heat. Roaring, ringing and buzzing in the ears.

Neuralgia of the face in gouty subjects, aggravated from motion, aggravated from cold wind; ameliorated by, applied heat. The patient is generally aggravated during rest; comes in stormy weather.

Pains ameliorated by eating, and warmth. Pain in the teeth before a storm. Pain in teeth with earache, ameliorated by heat; aggravated at night, from cold drinks.

Stomach and abdomen

Feels full after little food (Lyc.).

Empty eructations. Green bitter vomiting after drinking cold water. Sinking at the stomach. Pressure in the stomach after eating.

Pain as from flatulence high up in sides of abdomen. Stitching in spleen from walking fast. Rumbling in abdomen and fullness after eating.

Much straining to pass a soft stool. Undigested, thin, brownish stool. Diarrhea after eating, after fruit; from cold, wet weather, before a thunderstorm. Dysentery before a thunderstorm. Pulsating anus, drawing in anus extending to genitals.

Men

Drawing pain in bladder with frequent urging to urinate.

Orchitis with much swelling in rheumatic patients from taking cold, from sitting on a cold stone, from suppressed gonorrhea; the right most affected. Drawing pain in spermatic cord, during rest, ameliorated by heat and motion.

Great pain in testes, cord, and hips, ameliorated by motion and heat. It has cured hydrocele in boys. Much itching of the scrotum.

Women

Menses frequent and profuse.

Serous cysts in the vagina.

Chest

Rheumatic stitching pains in chest in stormy weather during rest.

Constriction of chest.

Pain in heart.

Back

Rheumatic pains stiffness in neck and back.

Pain in dorsal region extending to arms in cold, wet weather, aggravated during rest,

Tearing pains in neck and back driving out of bed.

Limbs

Rheumatic tearing pains in all the limbs in stormy weather, aggravated before a storm and during rest, aggravated at night; mostly in forearms and legs.

Wandering pains in the limbs and joints. Pain in bone and periosteum. Pains drive him out of bed. Paralytic pains in limbs. Cannot sleep unless legs are crossed. Sleepless after midnight. Pain in the shoulder joint so severe that the arm cannot be moved, but the patient and the pain are ameliorated by walking about.
