Eyes

Affections of the eyebrows. Eyes feel heavy, as if they were projected; sensation of a string through eyeballs. Expanded, as though lids did not cover.

Face

Neuralgia; hot stitches in left malar bone, which is very sore. Has relieved in inflammation of the antrum, where eye symptoms co-existed.

Mouth

Tongue dry when awaking-Coated white, without thirst, with bitter or diminished taste.

Respiratory

Stuffed condition and fullness at root of nose. Periodical, painless hoarseness. Cough as from vapor of sulphur in trachea. Constant hawking, on account of viscid, green mucus in larynx and trachea.

Extremities

Sense of weight and weariness in nape of neck and across shoulders. Neuralgia, beginning in left intercostal region, and extending into left arm. Arm becomes stiff, fingers clenched. Neuralgia of coccyx; pulsating, sticking, when sitting. Fingers often feel numb. Numbness of upper limbs. Everything feels rough.

Mind and Disposition

Loquacious mania. Silly conduct.

Head

Vertigo when reading aloud, with impeded speech and difficult vision. Pressing headache aggravated from mental exertion. Headache from smoking tobacco. Sensitiveness of the vertex to contact. Stinging and stitches in the head. Tension in the brain and on the forehead.

Eyes

The eyeballs feel too large and too thick ; swollen. Wandering, unsteady looks.

Ears

Sensation as if the ear were pressed out or torn out. Sensation as if a burning heat were rushing out of the ears.

Nose

Milk and bread smell like putrid meat. Discharge of red and greenish mucus on blowing the nose.

Face

Hot stitches in the left malar bone, painful when touched. Violent itching, biting and burning on the edges of the lower jaw, frequently with red, small, easily-bleeding (miliary) eruption. Tetters around the mouth. Vesicles on the surface of the lower lip.

Mouth and Throat

Dryness of the mouth in the morning. Swelling, painfulness and peeling off of the roof of the mouth. Tight, almost painless swelling of the size of a pigeon's egg on one side of the roof of the mouth. White frothy mucus in the corners of the mouth in the morning. Tongue rough, dry ; feels too large. Burning, stinging and scraping in the throat. Sore throat, as if a ball were lodged in it. Hawking of mucus. Tart saliva.

Stomach and Abdomen

Hunger very soon after a meal. After eating, hiccough. Heaviness in the stomach as from a stone ; relieved by eructation. Burning in the stomach, extending down in lower abdomen. Weak, slow digestion. Rumbling and rolling in the abdomen.

Stool and Anus

Frequent soft stools. Diarrhœic stools smell like putrid meat.

Urinary Organs

Frequent micturition with burning when passing the urine. Dark red urine, with a cloud in the middle, red sediment, and a greasy pellicle swimming on it. Acrid, excoriating urine. Burning and stinging in the urethra.

Respiratory Organs

Trachea very dry in the morning on waking. Hoarseness, with feeble voice, continuous hawking of mucus and burning in the larynx. Periodical painless hoarseness. Hawking up of viscid green mucus from the larynx. Burning in the larynx. (Bronchitis). Cough as from vapor of sulphur in the larynx. Cough, with expectoration of viscid mucus difficult to raise in the morning and evening on lying down. Oppression of the chest, with desire to draw a long breath. Stitches in the chest. Palpitation of the heart on motion and when at rest.

Back and Neck

Stitches in the back between the shoulder-blades, and pulsating stitch in the os coccygis when sitting. Sensation as if the neck were stiff and swollen on turning it. Sensation as if the nape of the neck were oppressed by a great, heavy load.

Generalities

Stinging pains in all parts of the body, especially the limbs. Sensation of spasmodic tension in the joints. Sensation of heaviness in the body.

Fever

Pulse full and slow. Chilliness, mostly towards evening, with internal trembling. Coldness on one side (right) with heat on the other side of the body (left). During the chill, sensation as if the skin and other parts of the body were contracted. Chilliness, with goose-flesh. Cold feet all night in bed. Heat extending from the neck down the back. Heat, with perspiration on the upper part of the body. Perspiration in the morning on waking, with biting-itching.

Conditions

At every motion, sensation as if all the joints were broken.

Characteristics

Paris betrays its relation to the Lilies and Arums in the symptoms of irritation which it causes in mucous membranes and skin with burning sensations and cramps. The Treasury of Botany says of Paris that the leaves and stems were "formerly used in medicine, the juice of the berry, though considered poisonous, has been employed in curing inflammation of the eyes." The provings made by Hahnemann, Stapf, and others, bring out a very marked and characteristic action on the eyes, and develop some of the keynote symptoms of the drug. One of these is a sensation of expansion and consequent tension. The head feels as if distended and the scalp too tight. The eyes feel as if much too large for their sockets; as if they were projecting and were being drawn tightly backward by a string to the middle of the brain. Paris is one of the drugs which are credited with producing garrulity, vivacity with love of prattling, like tea. A case of loquacious insanity cured with Paris 3 was recorded by B. Nath Banerjee ( Calc. J. of Med ., xii. 60). It brings out many of the leading symptoms of Paris , which I have put in italics. Mrs. B., 45, suddenly became loquacious and insane. After a month of Kavirajee treatment without benefit she came under Banerjee's care, October 3, 1893. A year before, the last of her five children, a grownup son, died, and she could not be consoled, and gradually became morose and dull. She ceased to menstruate in February, 1893, but had no uterine troubles or any other illness previous to the present. The symptoms were: Loquacity , but not continuous. Every three or four days, if interfered with, maniacal attacks lasting about half an hour. At times foolish behaviour. With difficulty Banerjee obtained the following symptoms from the patient: Vertigo, and whenever she thinks of her lost son, severe headache, the vertex being sensitive to touch. When telling these symptoms, suddenly her looks became wandering , and her eyes appeared as if protruding from their sockets . She could not relish her food because everything, especially fish, smell putrid . Whole body painful, especially when touched . She complained of a ball lodging in the throat and giving her trouble, with burning . Acidity and badly smelling diarrhœa . A peculiar feeling of coldness of right side of the body while the left side was hot . All symptoms < in evening and on motion . Ign . 30, and later 200, was given without any effect. Paris acted promptly, and on the third day the patient assured the doctor that she was quite well. The remedy was not repeated and the cure held good. Paris is in general a left-side remedy, but it has coldness of the right side, whilst the left side is natural or hot. I cured with Paris "numb feeling of left side of head." Numbness affects the upper limbs. The left arm is paralysed, feels stiff, and fingers contracted. "Numbness and prickling in left hand" was removed in a case of spinal affection. "Fingers often feel as if asleep; objects seem rough to touch ." This disorder of the sense of touch is a marked symptom. And at the same time there is great sensitiveness of the surface. The characteristic mucous secretions are green and tenacious. The diarrhœic stools smell like putrid meat. There is great sensitiveness to offensive odours; also imaginary bad smells: milk and bread smell like putrid meat. The eyes give out a fetid, ulcer-like smell. Paris has "hunger soon after a meal," which is the same thing as the "sinking of the antipsorics, and of the Hellebores, Veratrums, &c. Peculiar sensations are: As if scalp were contracted and bones scraped sore. As if a thread were drawn tightly through eye to middle of head. As if head were puffed up, and temples and eyes were pressed out; as if distended the size of a bucket and the walls were too thin. Eyes as if too large; projecting; as if pulled into head by a thread drawn through eyeball; as if he could not open eyes. Ear as if forced apart by a wedge; as if pressed out or torn out; as if a burning heat was rushing out of ears. As though face were drawn to root of nose then back towards occiput as if by a string. Tongue feels too large. Ball in throat. Throat constricted. Stone in stomach. As if internal parts contracted. Heavy load on nape. Fingers as if asleep; dead. All joints as if broken, swelled or dislocated at every motion. Hot stitches in left malar bones. Acidity, sour saliva. The symptoms are < by touch. The scalp is very sensitive to touch. Pressure on a sore spot on head = cries. Pressure with the hand > pressive pain in head. Motion < rest > . Nose

A sensation of obstruction in upper part of nose, with a discharge of blood when it is blown. ─ Bread and milk have a putrid smell. ─ Great sensitiveness to offensive odours; imaginary foul smells. ─ Obstruction of the nose in the morning, with discharge of thick and sanguineous mucus when it is blown. ─ Dry alternately with fluent coryza. ─ Discharge of liquid mucus from nose and eyes, which excites a panting respiration. ─ Red or greenish mucus blown from nose.

Face

Pains in face, with burning shootings in zygomatic process. ─ Hot stitches in l. malar bone, painful when touched. ─ Violent itching, biting, and burning on edges of lower jaw, frequently with red, small, easily-bleeding (miliary) eruption. ─ Purulent pimples under nose and on chin. ─ Sanguineous pimples, like grains of millet, on lower jaw. ─ Pimples on forehead, with pressive pain when touched. ─ Lips cracked. ─ Vesicles on the surface of the lower lip. ─ Herpes round mouth.

Teeth

Drawing toothache, or with drawing pulsations, esp. in teeth which are carious, < by cold things. ─ Incisive pains in gums every morning. ─ Gums shrivelled, as if they had been burnt.

Mouth

Mouth dry and parched on awaking in morning. ─ Collection of water in mouth. ─ Accumulation of rough and astringent saliva. ─ White and slimy froth in corners of mouth in morning. ─ Tongue coated white. ─ Swelling, pain as of excoriation, and desquamation of velum palati. ─ Hard (almost painless) swelling of size of a pigeon's egg in palate, which is also hard. ─ Tongue rough and dry, with sensation as if it were too large. ─ Clammy and insipid taste.

Throat

Pain in throat as from pressure of a ball. ─ Shootings, scrapings, and burning pain in throat. ─ Burning in throat when eating or drinking. ─ Much mucus in fauces, causing hawking.

Stomach

Voracious appetite. ─ Hunger very soon after a meal. ─ Disgusting and pressive risings. ─ Watery risings. ─ Nausea with sour taste. ─ Weakness and slowness of digestion. ─ Continued hiccough after a meal. ─ Pressure at stomach, as by a stone, > by risings. ─ Burning pain extending from stomach into abdomen.

Abdomen

Rumbling and rolling in abdomen; cutting, griping pains. ─ Tensive pain throughout abdomen. ─ Hard pressure in abdomen. ─ Incisive drawing and boring in one side of abdomen, at night, while lying upon it.

Stool

Frequent but scanty evacuations of the consistence of pap. ─ Loose, fetid evacuations, which smell like putrid flesh.

Urinary Organs

Diminished secretion of urine. ─ Frequent and urgent want to urinate, with burning pain during the emission. ─ Urine with greasy cuticle on surface. ─ Acrid, excoriating urine. ─ Fiery urine, with clouds in centre, a reddish sediment, and a variegated pellicle after standing for some time. ─ Sticking in forepart of the urethra. ─ Burning pain and shootings in urethra (when sitting).

Female Sexual Organs

Increased sexual desire. ─ Premature catamenia. ─ Intense after-pains but very imperfect contractions suppressed lochia for forty-eight hours with ineffectual urging to stool weak and feverish; agonising headache, with sensation as though face were drawn to root of nose then back to occiput; eyeballs sore, < on slightest attempt at motion.

Respiratory Organs

Sensation of dryness in trachea in morning (on waking). ─ Troublesome hoarseness and low voice, with continued hawking up of mucus (and burning in larynx). ─ Periodical painless hoarseness. ─ Cough with expectoration in the morning, without expectoration in the evening. ─ Cough with expectoration of viscid mucus, difficult to raise in the morning and evening on lying down. ─ Cough as if excited by vapour of sulphur in trachea, or as if caused by slimy mucus in pharynx. ─ Nocturnal cough when lying on the l. side. ─ Cough with expectoration of slimy, greenish mucus, proceeding from larynx. ─ Burning in the larynx (bronchitis).

Chest

Obstructed respiration, with necessity to take a full inspiration. ─ Aching in the r. side of chest. ─ Shootings in chest and sides of chest.

Heart and Pulse

Palpitation of heart during repose and movement: in evening. ─ Pulse full but slow.

Neck and Back

Tension and weakness in muscles of neck and nape. ─ Sensation as if neck were stiff and swollen on turning it. ─ Dull pain in nape, increasing at times in acuteness, with numbness, heat, and weight; > from rest and in open air; < from exertion. ─ Violent pains in both sides of neck, extending down to fingers, esp. l. side; < from mental exertion. ─ Pain l. side of neck and shoulders, paralysing arm and depriving of power of mental or bodily exertion. ─ Pains in the back and nape of the neck on stooping, as if a load were pressing upon them. ─ Shootings and lancinations in back, also in and between the shoulder-blades, and pulsating stitch in the os coccygis when sitting.

Mind

Thinking aggravates pains in head ; exertion of mind or memory causes severe pain in occiput and faintlike weakness.

Sensorium

Vertigo after loud reading or when sitting, with difficult speech and dim eyes.

Inner head

Teeth and gums

Painful swelling taking in whole l. half of upper gum. θ Scarlet fever.

Taste, speech, tongue

Great dryness of tongue on awaking ; tongue feels too large.
Tongue white, with roughness ; no thirst ; bitter or lessened taste.

Inner mouth

Swelling, painfulness and peeling off of roof of mouth.
Tense, almost painless swelling, size of a pigeon's egg, on roof of mouth. θ Scarlatina.
Dryness of mouth when awaking, without thirst.
White, frothy mucus in corners of mouth in morning.
Collection of water in mouth ; tart saliva.

Palate and throat

Hawking caused by accumulation of mucus in fauces.
Burning, stinging and scraping in throat.
Burning in throat when eating or drinking.
Sore throat in choanæ and fauces extending downward, pain when talking or swallowing, as if a ball were lodged in it, or as if throat were constricted, causing much anxiety ; pain extends to ears ; hoarseness, with burning in throat,
particularly when eating or drinking ; at the beginning much thirst ; sore throat alternates with inflammation of eyes.

Eating and drinking

Hunger soon after meal.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Hiccough ; after eating.
Painful eructation.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Heaviness in stomach as from a stone ; > by eructation.
Burning in stomach, extending into lower abdomen.
Cramp in stomach.
Weak, slow digestion.

Abdomen and loins

Rumbling and rolling in abdomen.
Pain or weakness through abdomen during diarrheic stool.
Colic.
Red curved streak above umbilicus.

Frequent micturition, with burning.
Urine : dark red, with red sediment and a greasy looking pellicle on surface ; acrid, excoriating ; containing a thick, red, fleshy substance.
Burning and stinging in urethra.
Violent burning in orifice of urethra, while sitting.
Fine stitches in forepart of urethra.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

Intense afterpains but very imperfect contractions ; suppression of lochia, for forty-eight hours, with ineffectual urging to stool ; weak and feverish ; agonizing headache, with sensation as though face were drawn to root of nose, then
backward towards occiput as if by a string, eyeballs sore and pained on slightest attempt at motion.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Paroxysms of hoarseness every quarter or half hour, so violent that he is unable to utter a loud word.
Periodical painless hoarseness.
Hoarseness, voice feeble, continuous hawking of mucus, and burning in larynx.
Great hoarseness. θ Sore throat.
Burning in larynx. θ Bronchitis.
Trachea and mouth completely dried up, in morning, on waking, with some hoarseness.
Frequent hacking, he endeavors to loosen tenacious mucus that seems to be firmly adherent to posterior part of larynx.
Green, tenacious expectoration, < in morning. θ Laryngeal affection.

Respiration

Oppression of chest, with desire to draw a long breath.

Cough

Cough : as from vapor of sulphur in trachea, or viscid phlegm in larynx ; commences as soon as he turns upon left side ; with expectoration of viscid mucus, difficult to raise in morning and evening on lying down.
Constant hawking and gagging, on account of viscid, green mucus in larynx and trachea.

Inner chest and lungs

Stitches in chest.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Palpitation of heart during rest or motion.
Pulse full but slow.

Neck and back

Nape of neck weary, as from a heavy load ; neck feels stiff and swollen if turned around.
Dull pain in nape of neck, increasing at times in acuteness, with numbness, heat and weight ; > from rest and in open air ; < from exertion.
Violent pains on both sides of neck, extending down to fingers, especially left side, < from mental exertion. θ Neuralgia.
Heat extending from neck down back.
Stitches between scapulæ, and pulsating stitch in os coccygis when sitting.
Dull pain in nape of neck ; sometimes it increases until it becomes acute, with sensation of numbness, heat and heaviness like a weight ; pain located about sixth cervical vertebra and extends upward and down to shoulders ; always with a feeling of
aching, numbness, heat and weight ; eyelids feel heavy also, sometimes as if he could not open eyes ; soreness on top of head, can scarcely use hair-brush ; pain in neck < in afternoon about 2 or 3 o'clock, > by rest and out of doors ; < when working or getting
tired when walking ; pain in pit of stomach, about midnight, with bloating and eructation of flatus ; food feels heavy after eating, particularly in evening, during and after tea ; appetite poor ; bowels regular. θ Irritation
of meninges in cervical portion.
Pain in left side of neck and shoulder, soon extending over whole side and rendering arm quite powerless ; violent pain exacerbated at intervals on both sides of neck, but chiefly on left side, extending along sternocleido-mastoid muscles to shoulders and to left arm down to fingers
and in right to elbow ; moving hand or grasping anything excites pain in occiput and nape of neck ; feeling as of a great weight on nape of neck and shoulders ; any exertion of memory or intellect causes violent pain in occiput and faintness ; sleep difficult and
disturbed by frightful dreams ; on waking feels wearied and pained all over ; completely disabled from mental or bodily exertion, and left arm quite powerless ; numbness and pricking in hand ; disorder of sense of touch, so that everything felt rough. θ Affection
of cerebro-spinal nerves.

Upper limbs

Left arm feels stiff, and fingers contracted.

Nerves

Violent cramp in morning, commencing in left lower ribs, extending to left arm, making arm stiff ; fingers clenched so that finger nails left impressions in flesh ; complete unconsciousness ; severe pressure as from a weight in back of
neck ; attack every few days.

Sleep

Restless, broken sleep with many dreams.

Time

Morning : white frothy mucus in corners of mouth ; trachea and mouth completely dried up ; tenacious expectoration < ; mucus difficult to raise ; violent cramp ; sweat.
Afternoon : pain in neck < about 2 or 3 o'clock.
Evening : mucus difficult to raise ; food feels heavy ; chilliness ; all symptoms <.
Night : cold feet.
Midnight : pain in pit of stomach.

Fever

Chilliness : mostly towards evening, with internal trembling ; in chest, abdomen and lower limbs, with gooseflesh and yawning, and icy cold feet.
Internal coldness as if parts were contracted by cold and were trembling.
Coldness of right half of body.
Small icy cold spots here and there in skin.
During chill contractive sensation in skin and in all parts of body.
Fingers are alternately hot and cold, as if dead, and of a dead color.
Heat : descending back from neck ; with sweat of upper body.
Sweat in morning when waking, attended with biting itching.

Attacks, periodicity

Alternately : sore throat and sore eyes ; fingers hot and cold.
Periodical painless hoarseness.
Every quarter or half an hour : hoarseness.
For forty-eight hours : entire suppression of lochia.
Every few days : attacks of cramp.
For thirteen years : headache.

Right : pressive pain in temporal region ; half of body cold.

nerves.
Man, æt. 47, married twenty-four years, spare habit, nervous temperament, suffering over six months ; irritation of meninges in cervical portion.

Characteristic

Head feels too large; as if distended; as if the walls were thin (as if elongated, Hyp.).

Headache of spinal origin, arises from nape and produces a sensation as if head were immensely large.

Eyes feel as if too large, they seem to have no room in sockets; as if lids could not close.

Aggravation

Thinking; mental exertion, excitement; using the eyes; motion; smoking tobacco.

Eyes feel as if projecting, with a sensation as if a thread was tightly drawn through the eyeball and backward into the middle of the brain; sight weak.

Dull pain in nape of neck; feels stiff and swollen on turning it; weary, as from a great weight lying upon it; worse from exertion, better from rest and in open air.

Chill

Mostly towards evening; in the chest, abdomen and lower limbs, with gooseflesh, yawning and icy cold feet; with internal trembling. Coldness of the whole right half of the body, from the head to the feet, while the other half was of natural warmth (see Rhus). Small icy cold spots here and there in the skin. The coldness produces a drawing, contracting sensation in skin and all parts of the body as if drawn together by the cold.

Heat

Starts from nape of neck and descends the back; in the face; with sweat of upper part of the body. The fingers are alternately hot and cold as if dead and of a dead color (Ced., Sep., Stann.).

Sweat

In the morning; when waking, with biting-itching that compels scratching; profuse; on waking, about 3 A. M.
