General

Periodical nervous sick headaches, with asthenopia, weak digestion, constipation. Catarrh. Suits debilitated, nervous, literary patients, with frequent headaches, dyspepsia and constipation.

Head

Cracking in cervical vertebræ when moving the head. Pain on top as from a nail. Pressure on vertex, in morning; worse till noon and in warm room. Stitches. Objects appear too large. Migraine; first on left side. Twitching of upper lip.

Nose

Violent sneezing; stopped up. Nasal catarrh, with redness and swelling at tip of nose. Acute pain at root of nose, extending to vertex and through temples.

Throat

Sore, right side with great tenderness; soreness to touch externally. Strangulated feeling.

Gastric

Gone, empty feeling in epigastrium, without desire for food. Acute gastralgia with pains extending to shoulder. Thirst and intense hiccough. Sour, fetid secretions ooze from molar teeth. Diarrhœa and tenesmus after milk.

Female

Menses late, scanty, with great debility and burning in eyes. Profuse leucorrhœa; worse, after urinating (Mag mur, Plat); also worse after menses.

Respiratory

Hoarseness. Dry, hacking cough, with stitches in chest. Obliged to set up and hold head. Must put arms on thighs, when coughing.

Skin

Itching all over, worse on neck, not relieved by scratching.

Modalities

Worse, periodically, every two weeks; yearly, forenoon. Better, in evening.

Dose

Third trituration.

Mind and Disposition

Low-spirited ; fears something evil will happen. Vexed and very angry from the least contradiction.

Head

Dulness, does not comprehend the conversation, and is unable to relate properly in conversation. Vertigo ; in the morning ; when rising after stooping, in the evening, when awaking with nausea and desire to vomit. Fulness and heaviness in the head, compelling to rub the forehead with the hand. Heaviness in the forehead in the morning, as if she had not slept sufficiently. Heat and heaviness in the forehead (afternoon). Headache all day, in the forenoon with vomiting of bile. Heat in the head, compelling him to seek the open air, with thirst (afternoon). Pressure on the vertex as from a hand. The headache is worse in the room, after walking in the open air. Stitches in the head (when stooping). Tearing in the head and the left eye in paroxysms. Periodical (every fortnight) headache.

Eyes

Heat and redness of the eyes, with pressing in them. The eyes are swollen, and cannot be opened in the morning. Agglutination of the eyes in the morning. The eyelids are red and swollen, with lachrymation and swelling of the meibomian glands. Cold water causes redness of the eyes with tension. Dryness and heat of the eyes (in the evening). Burning and pressing in the eyes (in the evening). Violent twitching in the eye, with lachrymation and difficulty of vision. The vision is very much impaired, especially in the evening. Objects appear too large ; the light appears double ; is surrounded by the colors of the rainbow. Objects look blue (before the right eye). Cloud before the eyes (morning). Stitches in the edge of the eyelids like electric sparks, worse on touching them.

Ears

Stinging in the ears. Sudden deafness, with roaring and humming in the ears.

Nose

Dryness of the nose. The nose is stopped up (right side) at night. Coryza, fluent during the day, and dry during the night. Stinging, tearing and soreness at the root of the nose. Redness and swelling at the tip of the nose, with burning.

Face

The right side of the face is red and hot. Redness of the face, with burning and itching like erysipelas. Swelling of the right side of the face, with sore throat. The pain in the swollen face wakens him at night, it is relieved by cold. The skin of the face is chapped. Twitching of the upper lip at intervals.

Mouth and Throat

When the molar teeth (decayed) are sucked, a sour fetid water is drawn from them. All the teeth feel loose and elongated. Toothache, with tearing in the right ear. Accumulation of thick mucus in the throat, with stinging pain. Stitches in the throat (uvula) on swallowing. The whole throat feels sore as if ulcerated, on swallowing, worse in the morning the (right side of the) neck is very sensitive, painful to pressure. The sore throat is worse in the evening, when talking and yawning. Stiffness of the tongue, it is difficult to talk. Bitter taste in the mouth in the morning. The breath is offensive, of which he himself is not aware.

Stomach and Abdomen

Aversion to meat. Violent thirst day and night. Hiccough (at night). Bitter and sour eructations. Nausea (morning). Sensation of emptiness in the stomach, without hunger. Sensation of great fulness in the stomach after eating. Pressure in the stomach, relieved by eructations. Painful sensation of constriction of the stomach. Stitches in the stomach and pit of the stomach. In the pit of the stomach, violent pain, like stabs with a knife. Stitches in the stomach, extending to the back. Burning in the stomach. Pinching around the navel. Painless rumbling in the abdomen. Tension of the abdomen, and discharge of flatulence (during the menses). Violent stitches, as with knives in the hypochondria.

Stool and Anus

Constipation ; ineffectual urging to go to stool, stool very hard and only discharged with great effort, has to press hard to discharge the soft stool. Diarrhœa, with yellow mucus ; expulsion with great force and with much flatulence. Diarrhœa after drinking milk, and tenesmus. During stool, burning and stitches in the rectum and anus. After stool, itching, burning and stitches at the anus.

Urinary Organs

Increased secretion of urine. Burning at the orifice of the urethra during micturition. After micturition, discharge of thin leucorrhœa.

Sexual Organs

Men. Erections (after dinner). Itching on a small spot of the scrotum, scratching dogs not relieve it. Women. Menses too late and too scanty. During the menses, bloated abdomen, colic, pain in the small of the back, great debility, burning of the eyes. Leucorrhœa, watery, especially after micturition.

Respiratory Organs

Roughness in the throat, relieved by coughing. Hoarseness, day and night ; every year at the same time. Cough from tickling in the trachea ; in the evening, after lying down. Dry, scraping cough, from tickling in the trachea, with sleeplessness from midnight till 4 A.M. At night violent cough, compelling one to sit up and to hold the head. Expectoration of white mucus. When coughing, dyspnœa and pressure on the chest. Stitches in the chest (left side) when breathing. Pressure and heaviness on the chest.

Back and Neck

Cracking in the neck when moving the head (forward or backward). Pain in the neck, as from a sprain. Stitches in the small of the back (afternoon). Pain in the small of the back during a soft stool. Itching and pimples in the small of the back.

Extremities

Upper. Pain in the shoulders, as if sprained. Itching on the shoulders ; scratching does not relieve. Rheumatic pains in the elbows, extending to the hands. The hand feel heavy, tremble, feel bruised. Rheumatic pains in the fingers. Lower. Itching herpes on the hips. Stitches in the right patella. Rheumatic pains from the knees downward. The feet feel heavy, tremble and are weak. Stitches in the heel of the left foot. Itching on the left heel.

Generalities

Great restlessness ; worse at night ; is compelled to change the position continually ; with vomiting and colic after suppressed menstruation. Great debility, especially in the evening. Heaviness in the hands and feet, relieved by motion.

Sleep

Sleeplessness from over-wakefulness. Feels refreshed in the morning, without having slept. Restless sleep. At 3 A.M., restlessness and heat ; every thing feels sore, compelling one to rise and to walk about to obtain relief from it. Awakens after midnight with colic.

Fever

The chill is preceded or begins with yawning and sleepiness. Chill, with chattering and shaking, followed by profuse general perspiration (in the evening in bed). Heat in the evening followed by chill. Continuous chill, with moist palms of the hands. Heat, restlessness and vomiting at night (must rise). Anxious heat with violent thirst. Dry heat with thirst, every afternoon at 3 o'clock. Heat with perspiration and thirst, followed by chill. Morning sweat.

Skin

Itching ; over the whole body, but mostly on the neck, as from fleas ; not relieved by scratching, but followed by small vesicles.

Characteristics

Nickel is found associated with Cobalt. It is said to have received its name (Nickel, the devil) from the miners, who considered it "false ore" as they were mining for copper. The word Cobalt (Kobold) has possibly a similar derivation. Nickel forms the chief ingredient in the alloy known as "German silver." It was proved by Nenning, and the pathogenesis contains some striking symptoms, many of which have been confirmed. Sir James Y. Simpson used the Sulphate of Nickel (NiSO 4 ) in "periodic headaches of a very severe character," and the provings show that the metal and the carbonate are equally appropriate in this connection. H. Moser ( Am. H ., xxiii. 61) has cured cases when the pain is: < 10 to 11 a.m., and may be so intense as to cause the patient to cry out; appears first left side, may jump to right; disappears in evening. It has also cured dysmenia; hoarseness, and cough; and cracking in cervical vertebræ on moving the head. Hering says it is suited to: "Literary men and others who suffer from periodical nervous headaches; weak, asthenopic, weak digestion, constipation; < morning on awaking." It has some characteristic coughs: "Must sit up and hold head with both hands with the cough." The child must be held up when coughing or it will go into convulsions; Mahony ( Med. Adv . xxvi. 112) cured with Nicc . 200 a middle-aged lady who had "loose hacking cough day and evening, and at 9 a.m.; has to put arms on thighs when coughing ." Peculiar sensations are: As if sweat would break out. As if brain were cut to pieces. As if she had not slept enough. As if a nail was sticking in head. As if neck sprained. Abdominal pains go from left to right. W. A. Clausen ( Med. Ad ., xxiv. 369) has supplied a keynote for the sore throat of Nicc .: Right side, with exquisite tenderness, soreness to touch externally on affected side. ─ The symptoms are generally < from motion. Talking and yawning < sore throat. Coughing > roughness of throat. Heaviness of hands and feet are > by motion. < After midnight and on pressure. > In open air. Cold > pain in face. Washing > burning of eyes. Cold water = redness of eyes. Most symptoms are > after eating. Must sit up and hold the head with both hands when coughing: or has to put arms on thighs when coughing.

General

Nickel. The element.
Found in the mountains of Germany, Hungary and Sweden. Called Nickel by the old German miners who discovered it, like Kobalt, thinking it a kind of useless or false ore.
It is a white malleable metal, of great density and high melting point, of less oxidability than iron and strongly magnetic.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Violent hiccough, especially in evening.
Hiccough, since two years almost uninterruptedly eighteen to twenty times a minute, with soreness of pit of stomach and hypochondria, coated tongue and loss of appetite, great weakness, emaciation.
Eructation bitter, sour or empty.
Nausea in morning.
Nausea, dull head ; sour eructations also mornings after rising.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Empty, fasting sensation, but no hunger.
Pressure > from soup or from eructations.
Sensation of great fulness in stomach after eating.
Painful sensation of constriction of stomach.

Female sexual organs

Menses : early, with pain in abdomen and small of back ; late, and scanty ; too early, too short, scanty.
Shooting from vertex to forehead, since midnight ; weakness ; nausea before menses ; forcing down abdominal pains, first on left side then on right ; anorexia. θ Dysmenorrhœa.
During menses, bloated abdomen, colic, pain in small of back, burning of eyes, great debility.
Vomiting and colic after suppressed menses ; great restlessness.
Leucorrhœa profuse, watery, after urinating and after menses.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Hoarseness ; is scarcely able to speak.
Hoarseness returns annually (in one case with nausea, intolerance of milk, weak eyes) ; also after exposure to wind.
Roughness in throat, > by coughing.

Cough

Cough : from tickling in throat, < evening after lying down ; dry, scraping, from tickling in trachea, with sleeplessness from midnight till 4 A. M. ; violent, at night, must sit up and hold head ; dry, concussive, often continuing for hours ; with great dyspnœa, but little or no expectoration ; dry hacking, in paroxysms.
Dry, hacking cough, like tick of a clock in its regularity, continuing for a long time ; child must be held up during continuance of cough, otherwise it is seized with spasms ; greatest possible degree of dyspnœa, no expectoration. θ Whooping cough.
Expectoration of white mucus.
When coughing, dyspnœa and pressure on chest.

Inner chest and lungs

Stitch in left chest, also striking to in most part of chest and arresting breathing, or causing one to start, or when walking, < on drawing breath.

Neck and back

Cracking in cervical vertebræ on moving head.

Itching herpes on hips.

Periodical nervous headache.
Eighteen to twenty times a minute : hiccough.

Right : objects look blue before eye ; swelling of side of face ; tearing in ear ; gnawing in lower molar ; tonsil swollen ; side of neck sensitive ; stitch in patella.
