Keynote

Ailments which are < by, or which depend upon, dampness of weather, damp houses or cellars (Aran.). Patient feets every change from dry to wet; cannot tolerate sea air, nor eat plants that thrive near water; a constitution in which gonorrhoeal poison is most pernicious; recovers slowly from every sickness. Every spring, skin affections reappear (Psor.). Inability to think (Nat. c.). Sad, gloomy, irritable; worse in mornings; dislikes to speak or be spoken to (Iod., Sil.). Depressed; lively music makes her sad; satiety of like; must use great self-control to prevent shooting himself. Spinal meningitis: violent crushing gnawing pains at base of brain; head drawn back; spasms with mental irritability and delirium; violent congestion of blood to head; delirium; opisthotonos.

Compare: Nat. m. and Sulph., which are very similar; Thuja and Merc., in syphillis and sycosis occurring in hydrogenoid constitutions.

Amelioration

Dry weather; pressure, sitting up (cough); changing position (but > in wet weather, Caust.); open air. Must change position frequently, but it is painful and gives little relief (Caust.).

General

A liver remedy, especially indicated for the so-called hydrogenoid constitution, where the complaints are such as are due to living in damp houses, basements, cellars. They are worse in rainy weather, water in any form. Feels every change from dry to wet; cannot even eat plants growing near water, nor fish. Always feels best in warm, dry air. Clinically, it has been found a valuable remedy for spinal meningitis, head symptoms from injuries to head, mental troubles therefrom. Every spring, return of skin affections. Tendency to warts. Fingers and toes affected. Chronic gout (Lycop).

Mind

Lively music saddens. Melancholy, with periodical attacks of mania. Suicidal tendency; must exercise restraint. Inability to think. Dislikes to speak, or to be spoken to.

Head

Occipital pain. Piercing stitches in ears. Vertigo; relieved by sweat on head. Bursting feeling on coughing. Hot feeling on top of head. Bursting feeling on coughing. Hot feeling on top of head. Boring in right temple, preceded by burning in stomach. Ill-effects of falls and injuries to the head, and mental troubles arising therefrom. Dreams of running water.

Ears

Sticking pain, earache, lightning-like stitches in damp weather.

Nose

Nasal catarrh, with thick, yellow discharge and salty mucus. Coryza. Epistaxis. Ethmoiditis.

Eyes

Conjunctiva yellow. Granular lids. Photophobia (Graphites).

Mouth

Slimy, thick, tenacious, white mucus. Bitter taste, blisters on palate.

Throat

Thick, yellow mucus, drops from posterior nares.

Stomach

Vomits sour. Brown, bitter coating on tongue. Yellow complexion. Thirst for something cold. Bilious vomiting, acid dyspepsia, with heartburn and flatulence.

Abdomen

Duodenal catarrh; hepatitis; icterus and vomiting of bile; liver sore to touch, with sharp, stitching pains; cannot bear tight clothing around waist, worse, lying on left side. Flatulency; wind colic in ascending colon; worse, before breakfast. Burning in abdomen and anus. Bruised pain and urging to stool. Diarrhœa yellow, watery stools. Loose morning stools, worse, after spell of wet weather. Stools involuntary, when passing flatus. Great size of the fecal mass.

Urine

Loaded with bile. Brisk-dust sediment. Excessive secretion. Diabetes.

Female

Nosebleed during menses, which are acrid and profuse. Burning in pharynx during menstruation. Herpetic vulvitis. Leucorrhœa yellowish-green, following gonorrhœa in female. Leucorrhœa with hoarseness.

Male

Condylomata; soft, fleshy excrescences; greenish discharges. Gonorrhœa; discharge thick, greenish; little pain.

Respiratory

Dyspnœa, during damp weather. Must hold chest when coughing. Humid asthma; rattling in chest, at 4 and 5 am. Cough, with thick ropy, greenish expectoration; chest feels all gone. Constant desire to take deep, long breath. Asthma in children, as a constitutional remedy. Delayed resolution in pneumonia. Springs up in bed the cough hurts so; holds painful side (Bry). Pain through lower left chest. Every fresh cold brings on attack of asthma.

Back

Itching when undressing. Violent pains in back of neck, and at base of brain. Piercing pain between scapulæ. Spinal meningitis; opisthotonos.

Extremities

Swelling of axillary glands. Inflammation around root of nails. Burning in soles; œdema of feet; itching between toes. Gout. Pain in limbs, compels frequent change in position. Run-arounds. Pain in hip-joints, worse left, worse, stooping. Stiffness of knees, cracking of joints. Rheumatism, worse in damp cold weather.

Skin

Itching while undressing. Jaundiced, watery blisters. Sycotic excrescences; wart-like red lumps all over body.

Modalities

Worse, music (makes her sad); lying on left side; dampness of basement, damp weather. Better, dry weather, pressure, changing position.

Diarrhœa, acute or chronic < in the morning on beginning to move (Bry.), with much flatulence (Aloe and Calc. Phos.), and rumbling in abdomen, especially right ileo-cæcal region.

Loose cough, with great pain in the chest; < in lower left chest (right, Chel.).

Mental effects from injuries to head.

Chronic effects of blows, falls.

Toothache > by cold water, cool air (Coff., Puls.).

Gonorrhœa; greenish-yellow, painless, thick discharge (Puls.).

Natrum sulphuricum is also one of our armamentarium for diarrhœa, both acute and chronic. Like Podophyllum, Sulphur, Nuphar and Rumex, the diarrhea is aggravated in the morning. Sulphur drives the patient out of bed, but Natrum sulph., like Bryonia, is worse only after beginning to move. Then again Natrum sulph. has, like Aloe, much rumbling in the bowels as of flatulence. This rumbling of flatus is often with Natrum sulph. located in the right side of the abdomen in the ileo-cæcal region.

Again the Natrum sulphuricum stool is, like China, Argentum nit., Calcarea phos., Agaricus and Aloe, accompanied by a profuse emission of flatus. This flatulence is not always present, but is often so. In chronic diarrhœa there is almost always some trouble with the liver, evidenced by soreness in right hypochondrium, which is sensitive to touch, and hurts on walking or any jar. One very strong characteristic for this remedy in this trouble is aggravation of the diarrhœa, pain, etc., in damp weather. In this it resembles Dulcamara and Rhododendron. The Dulcamara has the aggravation in change from warm to cold weather, weather damp or dry. This aggravation in damp weather is not confined to diarrhœa in Natrum sulph. but is especially present in cases of chronic asthma. I have seen very great benefit in such cases of this very troublesome and obstinate disease, and as aggravation in damp weather very commonly occurs in cases of old asthma this remedy is often indicated. I have not observed much benefit from this remedy in runarounds, for which it is highly recommended; but have seen nice results from it in very obstinate cases of gonorrhœa, when the discharges was thick and greenish and little pain. Loose cough, with soreness and pain through the left chest, is very characteristic. This is one of the chief diagnostic points of difference between Bryonia and Natrum sulphuricum, that while with both there is great soreness of the chest with the cough, with Bryonia the cough is dry, while with Natrum sulph. it is loose. The patient springs right up in bed, the cough hurts him so.

There is as much soreness as there is with Bryonia, and when the patient coughs he springs up in bed and holds the painful side in his hand to ease the hurt. This symptom may be found in chronic affections of the respiratory organs, such as asthma, phthisis, etc., and I have several times seen remarkably prompt relief and cure follow its administration in pneumonia when this symptom was present. This pain through the lower left chest is as characteristic for Natrum sulph., as is that of pain running through right lower chest for Kali carbonicum.

Mind and Disposition

Sadness ; inclined to weep. Lively music disposes one to weep.

Head

Vertigo after a meal ; the heat extends from the abdomen to the head ; relieved after the forehead becomes moist. Heaviness in the head, with bleeding of the nose. Periodical attacks in the right side of the forehead. Pain, as if the forehead would burst, after a meal. Jerks in the head, tossing it to the right side (forenoon). Feeling of looseness of the brain, as if it were falling to the left temple (in the forenoon on stooping). Sensitiveness of the scalp ; the hair is painful on combing it.

Eyes

Burning in the eyes, with discharge of burning water, with dimness of sight. Burning and dryness of the eyes. Dimness of sight, from weakness of the eyes.

Ears

Pressing in the ears as if the tympanum were pressed out. Itching of the wings of the nose, inducing rubbing. Bleeding of the nose during the menses (in the afternoon).

Face

Pale complexion. Itching of the face. Vesicles on the lower lip. Dryness of the upper lip, the skin peels off. Pimples on the chin, they burn when touching them.

Mouth and Throat

The gums bum like fire. Feeling of numbness and roughness in the mouth. Dryness, with redness of the gums and thirst. Burning of the tongue ; it feels as if covered with blisters. The tongue is covered with mucus ; slimy taste in the mouth. Burning blisters on the tip of the tongue. Burning of the palate as if sore and raw (during the menses). Blisters on the palate, with great sensitiveness ; relieved by cold. Frequent constriction of the throat when walking. Inflammation of the tonsils and uvula, with painful deglutition, and urging to swallow saliva. Dryness of the throat, extending to the œsophagus. Accumulation of mucus in the throat, particularly at night ; with hawking up of salt mucus in the morning.

Stomach and Abdomen

Great thirst for cold things ; worse after exercise and in the forenoon. After eating, perspiration in the face. Gulping up of sour water. Hiccough in the evening ; after eating bread and butter. Vomiting of sour mucus, or of saltish sour water (preceded by giddiness). Qualmishness before eating. Boring in the stomach, as if it would be perforated, or burning and pinching, in the morning after rising ; better after breakfast. Beating in the stomach, with nausea. Stitches in the region of the liver, while walking in the open air. Great sensitiveness of the region of the liver while walking. Stitches in the left hypochondrium while walking in the open air. Colic, griping in the abdomen ; worse before breakfast ; relieved in the afternoon by the emission of flatulence. Painful digging in the abdomen during the menses, in the evening, followed by thirst. Contractive pain in the abdomen, extending to the chest, with tightness of breath, and subsequent diarrhœa. Pain, as if bruised, in the abdomen and small of the back. Pinching in the abdomen, with the sensation as if the bowels were distended. Pinching in the whole abdomen, with rumbling, shifting and subsequent diarrhœa. Flatulent colic ; accumulation and difficult emission of flatulence. Incarceration of flatulence. Emission of fetid flatulence (in the morning, after meals, and with the loose stools). Stitch from the (left) groin to the axilla.

Stool and Anus

Stool hard, with pressure ; streaked with blood. Looseness of the bowels. Half-liquid stools, with tenesmus. Diarrhœa, preceded by pain in the groins and hypogastrium. Yellow liquid stools after rising from bed in the morning. During stool profuse emission of flatulence. Constant uneasiness in the bowels and urging to stool. (Chronic diarrhœa ; tuberculosis abdominalis). After stool, burning at the anus. Itching of the anus.

Urinary Organs

Copious micturition, with brick-dust sediment. Burning during or after micturition, or with pain in the small of the back on retaining the urine. Gonorrhœa.

Sexual Organs

Men. Itching of the glans or penis, obliging one to rub. Itching of the scrotum, with burning after scratching. Itching of the perineum and mons veneris. Excited sexual desire (evening) ; erections (morning). Women. Retarded, scanty menses, with colic. Profuse menstruation, particularly when walking in the afternoon. Menstrual blood acrid, corrosive and flowing profusely the first days ; the last days (flowing longer than usual) discharge of lumps of coagulated blood. Leucorrhœa.

Respiratory Organs

Dry cough (in the morning, after rising from bed). At night, with soreness of the chest and roughness of the throat ; has to sit up and hold the chest with both hands. Loose cough, with expectoration ; shortness of breathing ; stitches in the left side of the chest. Stitches in the left side of the chest, when sitting, when yawning, during an inspiration.

Back and Neck

Pain in the small of the back, all night ; has to lie on the right side ; the back feels bruised when turning on it. Pain as if stabbed between the shoulders. Stitches in the nape of the neck (at night).

Extremities

Upper. Twitchings of the hands (and feet), during sleep (more so after midnight). Trembling of the hands on waking and also when writing. Loss of strength of the (left) hand, is unable to hold any thing heavy. Tingling, ulcerative pain under the nail. Panaritium. Tingling in the tips of the fingers. Lower. Pain in the hips, in the morning on rising, and all day, particularly on making certain motions (on stooping), more violent when rising from a seat or on moving about in bed. Stabbing pain in the left hip (after a fall). The pain in the hip is better in certain positions, but compels one to move again after a short time, causing intense suffering. Legs and thighs feel weary and exhausted. In the heels, lancinating pain, tearing and ulcerating pain. Itching on or between the toes, in the evening on undressing.

Sleep

Drowsiness in the forenoon, especially when reading or writing. Starting as if in a fright, soon after falling asleep. Anxious, frightful dreams disturb the sleep.

Fever

Internal coldness, with yawning and stretching. Coldness and shuddering with thirst. Waking at night with chilliness, shaking and chattering of teeth, with anguish and thirst. Chilliness, with warmth of the forehead and hands. Dry heat in the afternoon. Perspiration in the morning.

Conditions

When lying long in one position, the restless desire to move compels a change which is very painful, and it is very difficult to find a new position which gives relief. Aggravation of many symptoms in the morning. Amelioration after breakfast and in the open air.

Characteristics

Natrum sulph . is a much honoured drug. It was discovered by Glauber in 1658 and named by him Sal Mirabile . It has been named after him Sal Glauberi . It is the chief ingredient in many mineral Spas, notably those of Carlsbad. It was proved by Schreter, Hartlaub, Trinks, and others. It was studied by Grauvogl, who found in it the typical remedy for his "hydrogenoid constitution"; and it forms one of the tissue remedies of Schüssler. From whichever side it has been studied the indications arrived at are practically agreed upon by all, though the homœopathist has the widest field. Grauvogl described as the hydrogenoid constitution the state in which there is extreme sensitiveness to damp, wetting, bathing, watery foods, and residence near fresh water, especially standing water. Periodicity is also another feature of this state. This constitution he considered as providing the soil for gonorrhœal infection. It corresponds to Hahnemann's sycosis. Nat. sul . was Grauvogl's leading anti-hydrogenoid. It will be seen by the following quotation that Schüssler by another route reaches the same conclusion: "The action of the Sodium sulphate is contrary to that of the Sodium chloride . Both, indeed, have the faculty of attracting water, but the end is a contrary one; Nat. mur . attracts the water destined to be put to use in the organism, but Nat. sul . attracts the water formed during the retrogressive metamorphosis of the cells, and secures its elimination from the organism. Nat. mur . causes the splitting up of the cells necessary for their multiplication; Nat. sul . withdraws water from the superannuated leucocytes, and thus causes their destruction. The latter salt is, therefore, a remedy for leucæmia. Nat. sul . is a stimulant of the epithelial cells and of the nerves, as will appear in what follows. In consequence of the activity excited by Nat. sul . in the epithelial cells in the urinary canals, superfluous water with the products of the tissue changes, dissolved or suspended therein, flows into the kidneys, in order to leave the organism in the form of urine through the ureters and the bladder. While Nat. sul . stimulates the epithelial cells of the biliary ducts, the pancreatic ducts and of the intestines, it causes the secretion of the excretions of these organs. Nat. sul . is also intended to stimulate the functions of the nerves of the biliary apparatus, of the pancreas, and of the intestines. If the sensory nerves of the bladder are not stimulated by Nat. sul ., the impulse to void urine does not come to man's consciousness; thence there follows involuntary micturition (wetting the bed). If the motory nerves of the detrusor are not stimulated, there results retention of urine. In consequence of an irregular action of Nat. sul . on the epithelial cells and the nerves of the biliary apparatus, there arises either a diminution or an increase of the secretion and excretion of the bile. If the motory nerves of the colon are not sufficiently influenced through Nat. sul . there arise constipation and flatulent colic. If in consequence of a disturbance in the motion of the molecules of Nat. sul . the elimination of the superfluous water from the intercellular spaces takes place too slowly, there arises hydræmia, and functional disturbances in the apparatus for the secretion of bile cause the following diseases: Chills and fever, bilious fever, influenza, diabetes, bilious vomiting, bilious diarrhœa, œdema, œdematous erysipelas; on the skip, vesicles containing yellowish water, moist herpes, herpes circinatus, sycotic excrescences, catarrhs with yellowish green or green secretions. The state of health of persons suffering from hydræmia is always < in humid weather, near the water, and in damp, moist underground dwellings; it is improved by contrary conditions." Nat. sul . is Schüssler's specific for epidemic influenza. Homœopathy welcomes the keynotes provided by these two great observers, and incorporates them with the data furnished by her own provings and clinical observations, with which they entirely agree. Grauvogl and Schüssler used Nat. sul . in the lower triturations, but homœopaths need not confine themselves to any. When the correspondence is exact the highest attenuations will act better than the lower; when the likeness is more general the lower will give the best results. The provings bring out the cardinal symptoms of the sycotic constitution: Early morning aggravation (the syphilitic is < from sunset to sunrise); the periodicity and intermittent character of the symptoms, the predominant chilliness and sensitiveness to damp, clearly relates Nat. sul . to Thuja , the vaccinal nosodes and other sycotic remedies. But these uses of Nat. sul ., whilst guiding the homœopath (and if he is ignorant of them he will miss making many cures), do not limit or hamper him. Nat. sul . has a clear individuality independent of these relations. Nat. sul . has many strongly-marked symptoms of the mind and head. It has headache with drowsiness; basal headache, as if the bones at the base of the brain were crushed; pressure on both sides or on r. side of occiput. Mental troubles arising from injury to the head. Like other Natrums, it has mental symptoms < from music. Low spirits even to suicidal impulse. Irritability < morning. Such conditions arise in conditions of nervous exhaustion brought on by debilitating diseases. There is also "Cheerfulness; after loose stools." Nat. sul . has nose-bleed before and during menses (not vicarious like Bry ). Toothache is < by warm things, intolerable by hot things, and > by holding cold water in the mouth. In scrofulous ophthalmia, granular lids, &c., Nat. sul . has a great curative sphere. H. C. Allen says that with the possible exception of Graph ., no remedy has "such terrible sensitiveness to light." Nat. sul . has a decided relation to fingers and toes. A case of panaritium is reported ( N. A. J. H ., xiii. 265) in a young woman, 2l. Sticking ulcerative pain under nail of right index finger, and in phalanges of various fingers. Pulsation in tip of little finger. > Out of doors. Nat. sul . 30 in water, a teaspoonful every two hours. Pain ceased rapidly; well in two days. (Six months before patient had one on another finger which gave great pain, and went on to suppuration). S. M. Pease ( Med. Adv ., xxv. 28) cured a very chronic case of intermittent fever with Nat. sul ., to which he was led by this symptom: "When he took off his boots at night the ball of the right great toe invariably itched." Its counterpart may be found in the Schema. Asthma is very frequently a sycotic manifestation, and Nat. sul . corresponds to the breathing and skin symptoms often met with in asthma. Asthma of malarial districts. Humid asthma of children; with every fresh cold an attack of asthma. Attacks of asthma frequently occur in the early morning hours. Leonard ( H. W ., xxxiii. 465) has cured with Nat. sul . 200x a very violent asthma which was always induced by any unusual exertion. Bellairs ( H. W ., xxx. 407) cured with Nat. sul . 3x a chronic case in a man, 35, who had "looseness of the bowels at each attack." There were no evidences of the sycotic constitution in this case. W. J. Guernsey ( H. P ., vii. 129) has recorded a similar case: Mrs. S., 36. Violent attacked asthma; greenish, purulent sputa; a loose evacuation immediately after rising the last two days . Nat. sul . 500 was given in water, every two hours. Was enabled to lie down the same night, and all symptoms rapidly cleared up. Another case by the same observer is this: Mrs. C., 42. Subject to attacks for years. Expectoration greenish and remarkably copious. Nat. sul . in water every three hours. Improvement began after a few doses, expectoration became paler and less abundant. Felt better than for years previously. A case of megrim cured by Baltzer with Nat. sul . 30 is reported in Archiv. f. Hom ., ii. 317 ( H. W ., xxix. 408). One peculiar feature of it was that there was salivation with the headache . Miss P., 19, had had headache every fortnight for years. Shooting pain in right temple begins in morning after rising, increases till evening, and only ceases about 1 a.m., when she gets to sleep. > By cold compresses; in open air; in dark room; by vomiting. < By noise; light; eating (does not eat anything on the days when the pain is on, or it would be < ); stooping; during menstruation. During headache mouth always full of water, causing her to spit constantly. Puls . and Phos . relieved temporarily, but the megrim returned with vomiting and flushes of heat. After headache much thirst and craving for acids. Before headache, irritability. Nat. sul . cured. Traumatic epilepsy resulting from injury to the head has been cured with Nat. sul . ( H. W ., xxxv. 258). The dreams of Nat. sul . are remarkable. Heermann of Paris cured a young lady, a patient of mine, whose sleep was disturbed by dreams of fighting . ─ Mahlon Preston ( Med. Adv ., xviii. 533) has cured many cases of threatened consumption having "pains flying from the chest beginning with a dry cough." Gregg (to whom Preston refers) gives the symptoms: "All-gone, empty feeling in chest, a sense of weakness in chest, must hold chest with both hands when coughing for support to relieve the weakness" ( Repertory , p. 322). Gregg refers "must hold chest because of pain and soreness, feels as if it would fly to pieces," to Bry . and Phos. Nat. sul . has both. Peculiar sensations of Nat. Sul . are: As if forehead would burst. As if a screw being driven in. As if top of head would split. As if brain was loose and fell to left temple. As if brain crushed in a vice, or something gnawing there. As if bells ringing in ears. As if tympanum was pressed out. As if something forcing its way out of ears. Weight on chest. Lump or ball in throat. Burning: on top of head; right. eye; edges of lids; gums palate; anus; abdomen; soles to knees. Creeping in scalp to vertex. Crawling in eyes. Symptoms are < by touch (liver abdomen; scalp; pimples). < Pressure of tight clothing. Pressure (of hand) > pressure in head; and soreness of chest. Scratching = burning. Heaviness of eyelids, as if weights were on them. ─ Itching on edges of lids mornings. ─ Aching in eyes, esp. in evening, when reading by candle-light. ─ Tearing pain round eye. ─ Burning in eyes, sometimes morning and evening, with great dryness, or profuse lachrymation (with discharge of burning water, with dimness of sight). ─ Dimness of sight, from weakness of eyes. ─ Burning in r. eye, < near fire; burning of edges of eyelids. ─ Nocturnal agglutination of lids. ─ Confused sight. ─ Sparks before eyes, after blowing nose. ─ Photophobia, esp. on waking in morning.

Ears

Otalgia, as if tympanum were propelled outwards. ─ Lancinations in ears. ─ Piercing pain in r. ear inward; lightning-like stitches in ear; < going from cold air into warm room; < in damp weather, living on wet ground, &c. ─ Ringing in ears, as of bells. ─ Tinkling in ears.

Nose

Coryza, with obstruction of nose, which scarcely permits respiration. ─ Nose-bleed: before menses; during menses (in afternoon); stops and returns often. ─ Sneezing, with fluent coryza.

Face

Face pale and sickly, as after a nocturnal debauch, with gloomy aspect. ─ Tearing in face, and esp. in cheek-bones. ─ Itching of face. ─ Vesicles on lower lip. ─ Pimples on chin, they burn when touching them. ─ Dryness of lips, with burning and desquamation. ─ Inflamed and burning blisters on upper lip. ─ Painful rigidity in maxillary joint, which prevents the mouth being opened.

Teeth

Drawing pains in teeth, with looseness, and a sensation as if elongated, > by cold air, and by smoking tobacco. ─ Pulsative, throbbing toothache at night, with great agitation, < from warm drinks. ─ Toothache, > from holding cold water in mouth. ─ Tearing in carious teeth, on getting out of bed, at night. ─ Burning in gums. ─ Shifting and painless swelling in gums. ─ Purulent vesicles on gums.

Mouth

Dryness with redness of gums and thirst. ─ Dryness of mouth, with thirst, esp. in morning. ─ Burning in mouth, tongue, and palate (as from pepper, or highly-seasoned food). ─ Tongue, dirty greenish grey or greenish brown coat at root; greenish coat with malarial symptoms. ─ Tongue covered with mucus; slimy taste in mouth. ─ Burning blisters on tip of tongue. ─ Burning of palate as if sore and raw (during menses). ─ Blisters on palate, with great sensitiveness; > by cold; can hardly eat; > from cold things. ─ Burning vesicles on tongue. ─ Accumulation of an acid water in mouth. ─ Much saliva after meals. ─ (Salivation during headache.)

Throat

Sore throat, with painful and obstructed deglutition (urging to swallow saliva) and inflammatory swelling of uvula and amygdalæ. ─ Frequent constriction of throat when walking. ─ Constriction and dryness in throat, extending to œsophagus. ─ Accumulation of mucus in throat, < at night; with hawking up of salt mucus in morning. ─ Ulcers on tonsils.

Appetite

Mucous taste. ─ Burning thirst for very cold drinks, esp. in the evening; < after violent exercise. ─ Want of appetite, and repugnance to food. ─ Head confused, and eyes clouded, during a meal. ─ After a meal, sweat on face, oppression of chest, and accumulation of water in mouth, with inclination to vomit.

Stomach

Sour regurgitation. ─ Frequent hiccough; in evening; after eating bread-and-butter. ─ Nausea, with lancination in eyes. ─ Qualmishness before eating. ─ Water-brash, in evening. ─ Vomiting of salt or acidulated water, or of acid mucus (preceded by giddiness), followed by great dejection, and burning pains in head. ─ Fulness in stomach, descending to chest, with obstructed respiration, in bed, in evening. ─ Boring pains in stomach, as if it would be perforated, or burning and pinching in morning after rising; > after breakfast. ─ Beating in stomach, with nausea.

Abdomen

Painful sensitiveness of the hepatic region to the touch, during a walk, or to a sudden jar. ─ Stitches in the region of the liver while walking in the open air. ─ Throbbing, tension, and lancinations in hepatic region. ─ Shootings in l. hypochondrium (while walking in the open air). ─ Pains as from a bruise in abdomen, at night, with pains in loins; the patient is awakened by pains, which are insupportable, except when lying on side. ─ Transient burning, passing over different parts of abdomen, in evening. ─ Painful digging in abdomen during menses, in evening, followed by thirst. ─ Contractive pain in abdomen, extending to chest, with tightness of breath, and subsequent diarrhœa. ─ Distension, burning, and shootings in groins. ─ Stitch from the left groin to the axilla. ─ Inflammation of r. groin; typhlitis. ─ Painful accumulation of flatus. ─ Pinching in abdomen with sensation as if bowels were distended. ─ Pinching in whole abdomen, with rumbling, shifting and subsequent diarrhœa. ─ Flatulent colic, with pinching in abdomen; < before breakfast; > in afternoon by emission of flatulence. ─ Flatulent colic; accumulation and difficult emission of flatulence. ─ Incarceration of flatulence. ─ Rumbling borborygmi, and movements in abdomen. ─ Frequent expulsion of offensive flatus (in the morning, after meals, and with the loose stools). ─ Piercing pain in r. flank.

Stool and Anus

Hard and knotty fæces (with pressure), often mixed with blood and mucus. ─ Frequent soft and loose evacuations. ─ Half-liquid stools, with tenesmus. ─ Diarrhœa, preceded by pain in the groins and hypogastrium. ─ Yellow liquid stools after rising from bed in the morning. ─ During stool profuse emission of flatulence. ─ Constant uneasiness in the bowels and urging to stool (chronic diarrhœa; tuberculosis abdominalis). ─ After stool, burning at the anus. ─ Itching of the anus. ─ Diarrhœa; < in wet weather; in morning; after vegetables and farinaceous food; also in cold evening air. ─ Knotty, wart-like eruptions on the anus and between the thighs; sycosis.

Urinary Organs

Frequent emission of urine, with sediment of a yellow colour, or like brick-dust. ─ Piercing in both groins, with urging to urinate, afternoon while walking outdoors. ─ Burning in urethra, after and during emission of urine, or with pain in the small of back on retaining urine. ─ Urine scanty; dark and passed more frequently, had to get up several times at night.

Male Sexual Organs

Violent itching in genital organs (glans or penis, obliging one to rub). ─ Gonorrhœa: thick, yellowish-green discharge; painless; chronic; suppressed. ─ Itching of scrotum, with burning after scratching. ─ Itching of perinæum and mons veneris. ─ Excited sexual desire (evening); erections (morning). ─ Sweat on scrotum, in evening. ─ Increased sexual desire.

Female Sexual Organs

Catamenia scanty, retarded, with colic, and suppressed stools, or hard fæces. ─ Headache, and epistaxis, during catamenia. ─ The blood of the catamenia is acrid and corrosive, or coagulated, and flows only in morning. ─ Leucorrhœa: acrid, corrosive; parts inflamed, swollen, covered with vesicles, size of lentils, filled with pus (after parturition).

Respiratory Organs

Short breath when walking; gradually > by rest. ─ If he coughs while standing he feels a sharp stitch in l. side of chest, with shortness of breath. ─ Dry cough, excited by a tickling, with roughness of trachea, and sensation of excoriation in chest, < at night, and > by rising up in bed and holding chest with both hands. ─ Loose cough, with expectoration, shortness of breath, and shooting in l. side of chest, when sitting, when yawning, during an inspiration.

Chest

Asthma: humid asthma of children; with every fresh cold an attack of asthma; attacks < early morning hours; asthma with early morning diarrhœa. ─ Shortness of breath, esp. when walking. ─ Oppression in chest. ─ Pressure on chest as of a heavy load. ─ Empty, all-gone, weak feeling in chest, must support it with both hands when coughing. ─ Pressure in l. side of chest, near lumbar region; < from motion and pressure. ─ Stitches in l. side of chest. ─ Shootings in chest and sides of chest, which are painful, esp. when coughing.

Neck and Back

Stitches in nape of neck at night. ─ Jerking tearings and tension in muscles, on l. side of neck. ─ Soreness up and down spine and neck. ─ Contusive pains in sacrum, or pain as from ulceration, esp. at night. ─ Lancinations in loins, when seated. ─ Tearing and gnawing pains along spine. ─ Incisive shootings between the shoulder-blades. ─ Lancinations in axillæ.

Limbs

Painful sensibility of limbs, which feel as if bruised, or fatigued. ─ Prostration; tired, weary, esp. knees. ─ Attacks come on suddenly.

Upper Limbs

Tearing in bones and muscles of arms, and forearms. ─ Heaviness of arms. ─ Sensation of fulness and rigidity in hands. ─ Tearing and shootings in hands and fingers. ─ Trembling and weakness of hands, which prevents the holding of anything heavy. ─ Loss of strength of l. hand, is unable to hold anything heavy. ─ Burning and redness in back of hand, as from the stinging of nettles. ─ Shooting pain of ulceration under nails. ─ Panaritium. ─ Tingling in the tips of the fingers.

Lower Limbs

Sharp pains in the hips (in morning on rising, and all day, particularly on making certain motions), on stooping, esp. when rising from a seat, and, at night, in bed. ─ Stabbing pain in l. hip (after a fall). ─ The pain in hip is > in certain positions, but compels one to move again after a short time, causing intense suffering. ─ Heat and burning in legs, morning and evening. ─ Tearing and drawing in legs, and esp. in tendo-Achillis and calf. ─ Legs and thighs feel weary and exhausted. ─ In heels lancinating pain, tearing and ulcerating pain. ─ Great lassitude and uneasiness in feet. ─ Shooting tearing, and pain as from ulceration in feet. ─ Violent itching of toes, and between toes, esp. on taking off shoes and stockings at night.

Generalities

Tearing and shooting, or jerking, or jerking tearings in limbs, and other parts, esp. during evening and night. ─ Sore across abdomen sides and back. ─ Trembling in body, with spasmodic movements of muscles, and accompanied by anxious apprehension. ─ Symptoms manifest themselves during repose, and are > by movement. ─ The patient feels > in open air.

Skin

Itching, and itching pimples, which burn after being scratched. ─ Eczema, moist and oozing profusely. ─ Itching while undressing. ─ Wart-like, raised, red lumps all over body.

Sleep

Great sleepiness during day, esp. in forenoon; failing asleep while reading or writing. ─ Sleeplessness caused by great agitation. ─ Uneasy sleep, with anxious and disagreeable dreams. ─ Jerking of limbs during sleep. ─ Starting as if in a fright, soon after falling asleep. ─ Dreams in which patient imagines himself to be flying. ─ Dreams of an expanse of water, of one drowning in it; of things floating on a river. ─ Anxious, frightful dreams disturb the sleep. ─ Dreams of being insulted and fighting; of being involved in a mob-fight. ─ Twitching of hands (and feet) during sleep (more so after midnight). ─ Trembling of hands on waking, and also when writing.

Fever

Waking at night with chilliness, shaking and chattering of teeth, with anguish and thirst. ─ Shiverings with coldness, esp. in evening, or at night, sometimes with anguish, quaking, and chattering of teeth, generally without thirst. ─ Coldness and shuddering with thirst. ─ Internal coldness, with stretching and yawning. ─ In morning, after a walk, shivering and shaking, and coldness, with heat in head, and yellowness of face. ─ Perspiration in morning. ─ During shivering fit, heat in forehead and hands. ─ Dry, general heat, in the afternoon. ─ Sudden flashes of heat towards evening. ─ Profuse sweat, at night.

Bitter taste, full of slime, thick and tenacious, white, must hawk it up constantly from œsophagus, trachea and stomach.

Stomach feels distended and heavy.
Full feeling in stomach and chest, difficult breathing, evening in bed.
Beating pain in stomach, with slight nausea.
Boring in stomach as if it would be perforated ; or burning-pinching in morning after rising ; > after breakfast.
Gastric complaints with acidity.
Constant taste of bile ; tongue covered with a curdy, bitter coating ; during day, especially after food, bitter or tasteless eructations ; complexion yellow ; appetite very slight ; no thirst ; beer is distasteful ;

Hypochondria

Cannot bear tight clothing about waist.
Attacks of hepatitis from which she recovered very slowly.

Before stool : contractive pain in abdomen, extending into chest ; pinching pains in groins and hypogastrium ; violent colic and rumbling.
During stool : slight tenesmus and burning in anus ; profuse emission of flatus ; voluptuous feeling.
After stool : cheerfulness, happy mood ; burning in anus ; relief of colic.
Diarrhœa : < in wet weather ; in morning ; after farinaceous food ; in cold evening air ; from vegetables, fruit, pastry, cold food or drink ; alternating with constipation ; comes on regularly in morning and returns quite regularly each day.
Diarrhœa at 9 A. M., preceded by passage of much bad-smelling flatus ; painless ; stools thin, yellowish and scanty ; only one passage daily.
Sudden urging to stool ; stool scanty, at times slimy, bloody, of offensive odor, containing bright red blood ; involuntary, occur during micturition, during sleep, or during expulsion of flatus ; flatulent colic < on right side ; < in damp weather or during a
storm ; < eating dishes made of flour, pastry, fruits ; occurs particularly between 2 or 3 A. M. and 2 P. M. ; > lying on side and discharge of flatus ; sensitiveness of hypochondriac regions ; intolerant of tight clothing ; pain and heavy sensation in

Urinary organs

Nephritis scarlatinosa.
Diabetes after a chill and an attack of rheumatic fever brought on by getting wet year previous ; extreme emaciation, face sunken, chest flattened, ribs projecting, muscles of extremities soft and flabby, little but skin and bone ; tongue and gums
bright red, the latter receding from teeth ; epigastrium distended and very sensitive ; liver hypertrophied ; bowels confined, feces grey, skin flaccid, chest covered with erythema ; dull pain in region of right kidney on pressure ; urine enormously increased, 10 to
18 pounds daily ; urine pale, almost like water, at same time something like whey, viscid, frothy on being passed, with sour reaction, specific gravity 1103, quantity of sugar in it about 5 1/2 per cent. ; appetite and thirst inordinate ; sleep disturbed by frequent calls to
urinate ; spirits low, extremely timid and anxious ; mind enfeebled, thinking faculty impaired ; felt weary, powerless, walking and all bodily movements difficult ; pain in ankle joints ; heaviness of feet ; in morning fatigue and powerlessness ; all
ailments < during rest ; thirst most all forenoon, with internal chilliness, confusion of head, pressive pain in forehead, especially after every meal ; noises in ears, sometimes vertigo, followed by nausea and difficulty of swallowing.
Polyuria simplex, excessive secretion of urine, especially if diabetic.
Copious micturition, with brickdust sediment.
Piercing in both groins, with urging to urinate, afternoon while walking out-doors.

More urine than usual, with burning sensation when passing it ; < at night, obliged to rise twice.
Urine burns when passing ; it passes in small quantities.
Burning during and after micturition, or with pain in small of back on retaining urine.
Urine loaded with bile.
Sediment yellow red ; in morning yellow white.
Lithic deposits in urine, brickdust-like coloring matter in water, often associated with gout.

Male sexual organs

Sexual desire excited in evening ; also morning with erections.
Enlarged prostate, pus and mucus in urine.
Gonorrhœa, yellowish-greenish discharge of thick consistency ; little pain.

Chronic gonorrhœa ; suppressed.
Condylomata, soft fleshy excrescences of sycotic origin, with greenish discharges.

Before menses, nosebleed.
Menses : profuse, acrid, corrosive, with colic and constipation, or morning diarrhœa and chilliness ; acrid, corrosive and flowing profusely first days, last days discharge of coagula ; scanty, with knotty stools, streaked with blood ; too late, acrid, making thighs
sore ; flow freely when walking ; retarded, scanty, with colic ; with diarrhœa.
Leucorrhœa : acrid corrosive, or vulvitis ; parts inflamed, swollen, covered with vesicles of size of lentils, filled with purulent matter. θ After parturition.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

Vomiting in pregnancy, with bitter taste.
Whole left leg greatly swollen, does not pit, but least pressure causes great pain ; intolerable pain starting from left temple, goes across forehead to right vertex, to right side of occiput ; begins in morning as soon as she puts foot to floor, lasts all day until 4 or 5 P.
M., affected parts remain sore ; affected leg smarts like nettles ; very nervous, cold chills come on suddenly ; begins to shake as soon as she gets into bed, lasts greater part of night, followed by heat, no sweat ; always chilly, "starved to death ;" <
in wet weather ; urine pale and scanty ; pain in small of back ; menses suppressed ; leucorrhœa profuse, yellowish, purulent ; radial pulse weak ; unable to walk, but manages to get across room with help of stick. θ Phlegmasia

Six weeks after confinement, violent fever, followed by vulvitis with herpes ; great prostration ; restlessness and sleeplessness ; loss of appetite ; bad taste ; great thirst ; red tongue ; constipation ; headache and sensitiveness of eyes to

Hoarseness ; with fluor albus.

Respiration

Constant desire to take a deep, long breath.
Short breath when walking, gradually > by rest ; later want of breath continues while sitting.
Short breath, with piercing pain in left side of chest.
When taking a deep breath a sharp stitch in right side of chest, later also on inspiration, in left side.
Great dyspnœa, desire to take deep breath during damp, cloudy weather.
Attacks of hay asthma, which patient dreads very much, causing great prostration and forcing her to remain in bed ; sneezing, hard breathing, cannot lie down, breathing < upon least motion, accompanied by arching out between scapulæ.
For years attacks of asthmatic breathing so marked as to herald his approach at some distance, and coming on after any unusual exertion ; during remission coarse rales along larger bronchi.
Humid asthma, rattling of mucus.
Violent attack of asthma ; greenish, purulent expectoration ; loose evacuation immediately on rising.
Asthmatic attacks for years ; expectoration greenish and remarkably copious.
Asthma with young people from a general bronchial catarrh ; afterwards with every change to damp weather.
Asthma about 4 or 5 A. M., with cough and raising of glairy slime, and vomiting after eating ; always < in damp, rainy weather.

Cough

Cough : dry, with soreness in chest, rough feeling in throat, particularly at night ; had to sit up and hold chest with both hands ; loose, from tickling in throat ; morning ; with purulent sputum and pain about last ribs, left
side ; frequent, with some sputum ; if he coughs while standing, feels a sharp stitch in left side of chest, with shortness of breath ; with thick, ropy, greenish, puslike expectoration.
Coughing up blood, in hydrogenoid constitutions.

Inner chest and lungs

After sunset, oppressed feeling in chest, and feeling of a ball in throat, with tendency to cry ; like hysteria.
Pressure on chest, as of a heavy load ; oppression in morning on awaking.
Sensation of all-goneness in chest.
Stitches : in left side of chest when sitting, when yawning, during an inspiration ; running up from abdomen to l. side of chest.
Soreness of chest when coughing, > from pressure.
Constitutional condition in children that results in chest catarrhs and asthmatic complaints.
A kind of phthisis, not a true tuberculosis, in those of a sycotic or hydrogenoid constitution ; cough, attended with muco-purulent expectoration, loud rales through chest, and seat of inflammation seems to be the lower lobe of left lung ; pain about ninth or tenth rib on l.

Upper limbs

Swelling and suppuration of axillary glands.
Piercing in left axilla, on humerus, back of hand, palm of right hand, fingers, under nails.
Tingling in arms and hands ; they feel as if paralyzed.
Furuncles on right forearm and near armpit.
No strength in hands ; flexors pain when grasping anything.
Hands tremble on awaking ; later, when writing.
Eruption on vola of each hands, some on dorsum and fingers ; blisters filled with clear water.
Palms raw and sore, and exude a watery fluid.
Watery blisters between thumb and index finger.
Fingers swollen and stiff.
Rheumatic arthritis, especially in joints of fingers, pains suddenly go to heart, urine dark red.
Paronychia ; patient pale and feeble in morning, heavy feeling in head, loss of appetite ; in evening, chills and heat ; after a blister, filled with water, which came on last phalanx, swollen all around, very red and painful ; matter around root of nail ;
pain more bearable outdoors than in room, damp walls (cellar).
Panaritium, pain more bearable out-doors.
Inflammation and suppuration around roots of nails.
Tingling, ulcerative pain under nail ; in tips of fingers.

Lower limbs

Pain in right hip joint ; < from stooping, motion, rising from a seat, or moving in bed.
While walking, suddenly a stitch in left hip, which makes it impossible to walk on, as foot no longer serves as a support ; pain so violent that it could not be borne for a minute, indescribable, as though he would lose his senses and fall
down ; disappears after two or three seconds as suddenly as it came.
Pain in left hip joint, as after lying in a bad position ; makes it difficult to ascend, also to sit down or get up ; awakes him at night ; can bear any one position only for a short time ; joint pains so from some movements that he can hardly help screaming ; at
times one spot is sensitive to pressure, then again it is not.

Skin

Jaundice : after anger ; itching of skin while undressing ; with malarial symptoms ; with hepatitis.

Fistulous abscesses of years standing, discharging watery pus, surrounded by a broad, bluish line, burrowing.
Eczema moist and oozing profusely ; secretion more watery than viscid.
Pemphigus, watery vesicles or blebs over body, wheals containing a yellow, watery, not glutinous secretion.

Lecture

This is one of our most frequently indicated constitutional remedies. The symptoms appear in the morning, evening apd during the night, especially before midnight.

Some symptoms are better after breakfast, during the daytime and after midnight, except the sweat. It is a very useful remedy for complaints following neglected gonorrhea. The symptoms and the constitutional state of the patient are worse in wet weather.

It is useful in patients who live near waterways and have suffered long from malarial influences. It is useful as an antidote to the abuse of quinine. It especially belongs to patients of the naturopathic and bilious constitution.

He is extremely sensitive to the night air. He suffers from universal catarrh and the discharges are generally greenish. It cures dropsically conditions. Sensitive to touch and pressure; oversensitive mentally and physically. Very sensitive to pain.

The pains are very numerous; dull pains, sharp pains, all better from motion. Bruised feeling:all over. Strong desire for open air and better while walking in the open air. Sensitive to a warm room, though he is sometimes sensitive to cold and must have warm loathing. The feeling of fullness or distension is found in many places; in the head, in the ear, in the abdomen, in the veins generally.

Complaints all worse in the spring and in warm weather. General, physical restlessness and anxiety. Marked weakness and trembling with internal pulsations and rapid heart. Twitching of muscles. Complaints from injuries of head and spine. The symptoms all worse during rest. Rheumatic complaints all over the body.

He is compelled to lie on the back. Convulsions from injuries of the head. Sycotic conditions with a history of warts and condylomata. Anxiety in the morning which passes off after breakfast; in the evening in bed; at night before midnight; during fever; about the future; anxiety and loathing of life with suicidal impulse, must use all self-control to prevent taking his life, A woman during gestation attempted several times to hang herself, after this remedy she was cheerful and there was no return of the suicidal disposition. Cheerful after stool. Music makes her sad. Sadness in the morning, which passes off after breakfast.

Mind

Extremely irritable in the morning.

Violent anger which is followed by jaundice. Aversion to company. Dislikes to speak or to be spoken to. Dullness of mind and excitability. Mental exertion brings on mental symptoms. Mental troubles come, on from injuries of the head.

A young man became very sad and subject to attacks of vertigo, and neglected his business after being hit on the side of the head by a base ball. He was entirely free from all symptoms after taking this remedy.

Fear of a crowd; of evil; of people. Forgetful, easily frightened, hysterical; indifferent; indolent; insanity. She is oversensitive and suspicious. Starting from fright or noise and in sleep.

Head

Subject to vertigo, congestive headaches with fullness and heat.

Pressing outward in the head with pulsation. Periodical headaches with vomiting bile. The pains are worse when thinking of them and better by pressure, in the open air and when lying. Pulsation in the temples when walking. Splitting pain in the vertex. Heat of the vertex.

Headache in the morning on waking. Mental exertion brings on headaches. Sensation as of brain falling to side lain on. Headache with intermittent fever. Violent occipital headache with pain in the nape of the neck. Headache from injuries of the head. Itching of the scalp. Formication. Eczema of the scalp with much moisture.

Eyes

Photophobia and head complaints from looking, into the light.

Lachrymation and dim vision, jaundiced eyes; inflamed eyes with many blisters. Burning in the eyes morning and evening. Greenish discharge from the eyes. Lids stuck together in the morning.

Granular lids. Scrofulous inflammation of the conjunctiva. Redness, swelling and burning of the margins of the lids. Heaviness of lids. Pressing in eyes when using eyes. Itching of the eyes in the morning.

Ears

Chirping in the ears in the evening; during chill and fever.

Flapping sensation in the ears. Ringing in the ears. Pressing out feeling in the ears. Earache as if something was forcing its way out. Stitching pains in ears, worse entering warm room from cold air; in damp weather.

Earache. Complaint worse on right side. Heat in right ear in evening. Catarrh of right ear. Stopped sensation in right ear. Purulent discharge from the ears.

Nose

catarrhal discharge from nose, yellowish green.

Epistaxis before and during menses; in afternoon and evening. Dryness and burning in the nose. Obstructed with mucus in the night. Mucus drawn from posterior nares tasting salty. Sneezing with fluent coryza and influenza. Epidemic influenza. Chunks of dried mucus blow. from high up in nose.

Face and mouth

Itching of the face with eczema.

Sickly expression and jaundiced skin. Vesicles and pimples on the face. Vesicles on the lower lip and around the mouth. Pimples on the chin burning on touch.

The teeth become loose and fall out in sycotic constitution. The gums separate from the teeth, Pain in the teeth worse from warm things, better from cold drinks and the cold air.

Gums red, ulcerate and burn. Blisters on the gums. The mouth is always slimy. Much mucus forms in the mouth and throat. Taste is better and tongue is heavily coated a dirty greenish brown.

Blisters on the tongue and roof of the mouth. Burning in the roof of the mouth during menses. Numbness in the mouth. Salivation.

Throat and stomach: Chronic inflammation of the throat with copious viscid white MUCUS.

Dry sensation in throat. Pain in throat on swallowing food. Choking feeling in the throat when walking. It is often needed in goitre.

Great thirst in the evening; for very cold drinks; during chill and fever.

Aversion to bread and meat. Qualmishness after farinaceous foods; hiccough after bread in evening. Eructations of sour water of bitter fluid.

Nausea before breakfast. Constant nausea. Vomiting of sour or bitter fluid. Vomiting of green bile with colic. The stomach feels distended and heavy. Pulsation in the stomach after breakfast. Extreme cases of gastric weakness with acidity.

Can digest only the simple foods. Digestion very slow. This remedy has cured many complaints of the liver; congested, enlarged, sore liver.

Liver

Pain in the liver from Iying on the right side.

Dragging in the right hypochondrium when lying on the left. side (Mag. m., Card. m., Ptel .), soreness and itching in the liver when walking.

Sharp pains in the liver on deep inspiration. The liver is disturbed by mental exertion and anger. The liver seems to manufacture an excess of bile. Perverted viscid bile that readily forms gall stones. It causes the liver to make healthy bile which is the natural solvent of gall stones, when given in homoeopathic doses at long intervals. It has cured many cases of gall stone colic. It has removed gall stones in many cases. Sensitive to clothing over the hypochondria. The following three cases will testify:

Case I.

Woman, married, grown children. Aged 37. Headache followed by vomiting of bile for several years. Face purple. Heat ameliorates the pain.

Pain begins in right eye, spreads over the forehead with a dragging feeling in back of head. Pain in sacrum extends to thighs, aggravated on right side. Nervous, easily startled, apprehensive. Intensely fastidious. Had gall stone colic three months ago. Cold feet. Headache at menstrual period for sixteen years. Menstrual flow thick, clotted, dark, lasts one day, Stool, light color when sick, darker when in better health. Must restrain herself or she will commit suicide. Slow pulse at times. Tired, all the time. Condemned to an operation by the surgeon for gall stone. Fissured tongue. Natrum sulphuricum cured the gall stones disappeared.

Case 2.

Man actively engaged in business, weight 180 pounds. Age 40.

Pain in region of gall bladder. Gall stone colic. Came on after indigestion. Dull aching in that region. Must walk about the room, not ameliorated in any position. Only once has stool become light colored. Pain in region of kidneys, also through pelvic region and legs with a cloudy condition of the urine; dribbling of few drops of urine after urination.

Dull heavy pain in right side behind the lower ribs, continuous pain; pain extends up right side as far as nipple; stabbing pains in breast. Pain in duodenum aggravated after eating. Natrum sulph. cured. The patient is in perfect health.

Case 3.

Woman. Age 64. Diarrhea; stool watery, sometimes chalky; enlarged liver; clawing feeling in gall bladder; gall stone colic.

Had been condemned by a surgeon to the operating table. Sinking spells after stool; cold spells; vertigo, stooping, lying or walking; spells of rapid beating of heart; mental depression; thirstless; temperature sub-normal; sensitive to jarring abdomen; flatulence and rumbling in abdomen; cold legs to knees; cold hands much belching, aggravated after meals; sensitive to weather changes nervous and sleepless before a storm; sore dragging feeling in the liver; bowels sluggish; slow digestion; heaviness of arms and legs; chilliness down the back; unable to he on right side with comfort; urine copious; strong; late going to sleep.

Natrum sulph. made a radical change in her condition and there are no more signs of gall stones.

Abdomen

Distress in the abdomen relieved by displacing flatus.

Emptiness relieved by passing flatus and by eructations. Cramps and many pains from obstructed flatus. Pain and distension in the ascending colon from flatus.

Pain in the region of the caecum. It has cured many cases resembling the first stage of appendicitis. Pain and tenderness in the whole abdomen. Dull heavy pain from abdomen to back. Burning in the abdomen. Feeling in the abdomen as it a diarrhea would come on, ameliorated by eructations and passing flatus.

Distress in the abdomen that hurries him to stool but only flatus passes. Pain in the abdomen during menses. Cramp in morning before breakfast. Pain in abdomen, 4 to 8 P.M., and in evening. Constant distress in bowels and urging to stool.

Fullness, rumbling, motions, gurgling with or without diarrhea. Pain in right ascending colon when lying on the. right side. Bilious colic with vomiting of bile. It has cured many cases of syphilis. It has cured enlarged abdominal glands. Morning diarrhea with copious flatus soon after rising or soon after standing on the feet. Diarrhea in wet weather.

Stools gushing; copious; greenish; thin; very offensive; slimy, bloody; cramps in the abdomen before stool. Smarting in the anus during stool. Sometimes cheerful after stool. Often the diarrhea is painless.

Diarrhea after farinaceous food; from vegetables; fruit; pastry; cold drinks; ice cream. Diarrhea alternating with constipation. Diarrhea with stools at any hour of the day or night, but especially morning and evening.

It has cured many cases of chronic diarrhea with stool involuntary and lienteric.

Itching and crawling in the anus. Condylomata at the anus. It cured an ulceration in the rectum with copious bleeding in a lawyer who had long struggled with suicidal impulses. It has often cured bleeding piles.

Kidneys and urines

It has cured parenchymatic inflammation of the kidneys following scarlet fever and from malarial influences.

It has cured sugar in the urine and polyuria. It has cured brick dust sediment many times also where copious white sandy sediment was present. It has cured copious deposits of phosphates with copious jelly-like mucous sediment. Must rise often in the night to urinate. Burning during and after urination. Urine loaded with bile. Where these symptoms appear after neglected gonorrhea.

Male

In the male strong sexual desire and troublesome erections.

Gonorrhea when the discharge has a greenish yellow color and there is burning during and after urination. It has cured enlarged prostate many times. Condylomata, soft fleshy with greenish discharge.

Oedema of the scrotum and prepuce. Itching of the penis and scrotum with burning after scratching.

Female

The menstrual flow is copious, acrid and clotted.

Leucorrhoea acrid greenish, purulent, excoriating the parts. It has cured milk leg.

Larynx, trachea and chest

Much thick, viscid white mucus forms in the larynx and trachea.

Dyspnoea on exertion and while walking; with sharp pain in left chest. Stitching on deep breathing. Dyspnoea in damp weather. It is a most useful remedy in humid asthma in children of sycotic parents. Humid asthma with copious viscid mucus in every spell of hot weather. Chronic catarrh of the bronchial tubes.

Frequent attacks of paroxysmal cough from irritation in larynx ending in copious white, viscid expectorations.

Expectoration bloody; greenish yellow; purulent; white; viscid. Oppression of the chest from damp evening air and in the morning on waking.

Emptiness in the chest on inspiration. Soreness in the chest on coughing, better by holding the chest with the bands.

Bronchitis and pneumonia are sometimes hard to cure in sycotic patients until they have received this remedy. Muco-purulent expectoration in old people. Eruptions on the chest every spring in sycotic patients. Swelling and suppuration in the axillary glands.

It has been the epidemic remedy in this country in cerebro-spinal meningitis, where the pain in the back of the head and neck was marked, "as the gnawing of a dog" and the head was drawn backward.

Back and limbs

Piercing pain between the scapulae in the evening while sitting.

Tenderness of the spine. Sore pain in the small of the back and sacrum. Pain in the small of the back during the night compelling her to lie on the right side; it passes away in the morning after rising. Pain in the small of the back from retaining the urine. Itching of the back when undressing. Pain in the sacrum, cannot lie on either side.

Trembling, twitching and weakness in the limbs, twitching in hands and feet during sleep. Pains in the limbs during rest. Rheumatic pains in the limbs in wet weather. Cracking in the joint. Warts on the arms and hands. Pains in the limbs during chill and fever, better by motion and walking. Worse in the lower than in the upper limbs.

Weakness in the hands; flexors pain on grasping anything. Trembling in the hands in the morning on waking and when writing. The tendency to suppuration around the nails is a marked symptom in this remedy. Palms raw and sore and exude a watery fluid. It has cured bad cases of psoriasis of the palms. Fingers swollen and stiff.

Panaritium, pain more bearable in the open air. Ulceration, pain under the nail and in the tips of the fingers.

Pain in the right hip joint on motion. Stitching in the left hip. Pain in the hip extending to the knee. Swelling in the left leg.

Sciatica better in motion. Dull, aching in the lower limbs during chill and fever, better when walking. Restlessness of the limbs at night in bed. Ulcers on outer side of thighs. Stiffness of knees. Weakness in lower limbs. Burning of feet and legs to the knees. Dry heat in feet at night. Oedema of the feet. Sharp pain in soles and heels.

Drowsiness in the forenoon when reading. Frightful dreams. Chill from 6 to 9 P.M., with fever, than dry heat until 1 A.M., sweat absent.

Chill with icy coldness and gooseflesh from 4 to 8 P.M. during menses. Shaking chills. Chilliness with fever in the evening from night air. Perspiration after midnight or toward morning. Fevers with vomiting bile. Remittent and intermittent fevers. It is a much neglected remedy in chronic intermittent fever.

Eczema with watery oozing. Water blisters. Yellow scales after breaking the vesicles. Jaundice. Intertrigo. Wart-like, red excrescences all over the body.

Red, knotty eruptions on head above the ears; on the forehead and left side of nape of neck; in the middle of chest. Itching when undressing.

Mental traumatism; mental effects from injuries to head; chronic effects of blows, falls.

Granular lids: like small blisters (Thuja); green pus and terrible photophobia; gonorrhœal or sycotic.

Nosebleed during menses (instead of menses, Bry., Phos., Puls.).

Toothache > by cold water, cool air (Coff., Puls.).

Dirty, greenish-gray or brown coating on tongue.

Diarrhœa: sudden, urging, gushing, much flatus; on first rising and standing on the feet; after a spell of wet weather; living or working in basements.

Gonorrhœa; greenish-yellow, painless, thick discharge (Puls.); chronic or suppressed (thick, green, Kali iod.).

Dyspnœa; desire to take a deep breath during damp, cloudy weather.

Humid asthma in children; with every change to wet weather; with every fresh cold; always worse in damp, rainy weather; sputa green, greenish, copious (greenish grey, Cop.).

Sycotic pneumonia; lower lobe of left lung; great soreness of chest, during cough, has to sit up in bed and hold the chest with both hands (Nic.—r. lung, Bry.).

Spinal meningitis: violent crushing gnawing pains at base of brain; head drawn back; spasms with mental irritability and delirium; violent congestion of blood to head; delirium; opisthotonos.

Aggravation

Damp basements or dwellings; damp weather (Aran., Ars. i., Dul.); rest; lying.

Amelioration

Dry weather; pressure; sitting up (cough); changing position (but > in wet weather, Caust.); open air.

Type

Remittent, bilious, malarial, yellow; or yellow assumes a remittent or low continued form, instead of recovering.

Time

4–8 P. M.

Cause

Exposure; living in damp houses, basements, cellars; wet weather; sea air; living near water; every change from dry to wet (Aran., Dul., Rhus).

Chill

Internal, with yawning and stretching. Chills; with icy coldness and goose-flesh, 4–8 P. M.; towards evening, without thirst; evening in bed, could not get warm all night; up the back, with shaking and chattering of the teeth, without internal coldness; waking at night with anguish and thirst.

Chilly in bed and shaking chills out of it, thirst, pulse very rapid. Chilly and feverish in evening.

Heat

Day in afternoon; in sudden flashes towards evening; hot sensation on vertex; general heat and restlessness in evening.

Sweat

Without thirst; on single parts, on face, on genitals; at night; in morning.

Tongue

Dirty, greenish-grey, or greenish-brown coating on base of tongue; covered with mucus, slimy; taste bitter or lost.

Analysis

Fevers, with icy coldness, no thirst in any stage; attacks come on suddenly; bilious vomiting; malarial, caused or < by wet weather or living near water or seashore, working in damp rooms or basements.
