Head

Pressing in vertex; better, hard pressure with hand. Pressing-together pain. Weight pressing on brain with every step on ascending. Pain from nape over whole brain; better, stooping, sitting; worse, going upstairs. Cracking in jaw and twitching of facial muscles.

Stomach

No thirst at any time. Revenous hunger; passing away after eating a little. Desire for meat. Sensation of coldness extending up to œsophagus.

Abdomen

Distended and full; increased by smoking tobacco. Coldness of abdomen.

Extremities

Mind and Disposition

Sad, weeping mood. Taciturn and self reflecting. Anxiety about the heart, as if something evil were going to happen.

Head

Continuous heaviness of the head. Pressing or compressing headache, with the sensation when ascending as if a heavy weight pressed on the head, relieved by pressing the head with the hands. Pressing, pain from both sides of the head. Dull headache in the room, with difficult flow of ideas ; better in the open air. External gnawing on the vertex. Burning pain on the forehead.

Eyes

The eyelids feel stiff as from tonic spasms. Pressing in the eyes. While reading, every thing becomes black before the eyes.

Ears

Stitches in the ears. Cracking in the ears when masticating. Feeling of coldness in the ear. Running of the ears, especially after exanthemata.

Nose

Tension in the root of the nose. Nauseating smell before the nose as from rotten eggs.

Face

Painless, visible twitching of the muscles of the face and of the eyelids. Heat and redness of the face while sleeping. Heat in the face with cold feet. Pain and cracking in the articulation of the jaw when masticating.

Mouth and Throat

Great dryness of the throat without thirst. When yawning and coughing, paralytic feeling on the left side of the throat. Dryness and roughness in the throat preventing deglutition. Dryness of the palate, causing a stinging when swallowing.

Stomach and Abdomen

Taste in the mouth bitter-sweet. Frequent empty eructations. After eating, painful dulness of the head. Increased strong appetite preceded by heat in the stomach. Constriction in the stomach. Continuous rumbling in the stomach as from emptiness. Sensation of coldness in the abdomen, especially when pressing with the hand on it, or in the morning when rising. Sensation of soreness of the abdominal walls. The abdomen is distended by flatulence.

Stool and Anus

Constipation hard stool with pinching pain in the abdomen. Bleeding, hæmorrhoidal tumors.

Urinary Organs

Frequent desire to urinate, with scanty discharges.

Sexual Organs

Men. Increased sexual desire without amorous fancies erections. Both testicles are drawn up, the right more than the left. The spermatic cord is painful to the touch.

Respiratory Organs

Rough, hoarse voice, the ears feel obstructed as if something had been stretched across. Stitch in the anterior regions of the larynx, impeding deglutition. Spasmodic contraction of the larynx ; when an effort to inspire is made it causes a cough. Constriction and stitches in both sides of the chest. The stitches in the (right side of the) chest are worse during motion, and when breathing. Stitches in the region of the heart.

Back and Neck

Bruised pain in the small of the back, more on sitting quiet and when stooping. Dull, boring stitch on the left shoulder-blade. Feeling of heaviness and stiffness in the muscles of the neck and throat.

Extremities

Upper. Tension and paralytic tearing in the, arms, hands and fingers. Spasmodic stiffness of the arms, the fingers are involuntarily clenched. Painful jactitation of the muscles of the (right), upper arm and little finger. Cramp-like pains in the muscles of the (left) lower arm, extending as far as the palm of the hand. Lower. Bruised feeling of the thighs. The (right) thigh and leg are spasmodically jerked upward, when sitting, relieved, when standing or when drawing up the leg.

Generalities

Painless twitching of the muscles in different parts (face, thigh), principally when at rest. Great debility, especially when walking, often with chilliness. Stinging, pinching pain (in the limbs : arthritic affections).

Fever

Pulse. Slow during the cold stage and accelerated during the fever. Chill predominates, icy coldness of the hands and feet and coldness in the abdomen. Chill, which is relieved by the heat of the stove and only remains in the back. Sensation of chilliness oil the hands and lower legs. Heat in the evening, mostly on the head, with cold feet. Perspiration in the evening as soon as he lies down, continuing all night. Intermittent fevers, with sensation of coldness in the abdomen.

Conditions

Chronic complaints from the abuse of cinchona and quinine. Aggravation in the evening and daring rest, while lying down, amelioration from motion, from pressing on the affected part.

Clinical

Amaurosis. Chest, affections of. Cramps. Fidgets. Headache, pressive. Heart, pains in. Intermittent fever. Jerkings. Paralysis.

Characteristics

The Buck-bean (or "Bog-bean," as it is also called in Ireland and in Lincolnshire) is a water plant, and abounds in the fen districts, where it is in great local repute as a remedy for ague. Hahnemann proved it and well defined its sphere of action. Teste, who also proved it, found it very similar to Drosera . Both these drugs caused in him, as one of the first symptoms, obscuration of sight, a sort of white mist, or vibrations, < in open air or during a walk. This was so intense that he did not dare to cross a street. The pains of Dros . and Meny . were the same in character, but those of Dros . were more intense. This analogy has not proved as close in other respects as Teste imagined it would. The main features of Meny . are ( 1 ) chill; ( 2 ) sensations and pains of tension and compression; and ( 3 ) spasmodic jerkings and visible twitchings; these are < during rest, and may be associated with neuralgia. As soon as the patient lies down the legs jerk and twitch so that he cannot rest. "When sitting, the outstretched thigh and leg are four times spasmodically jerked up, but when standing or in drawing up the knees towards him, this is not perceptible." Meny . has cured many cases of fidgets. "jumps," "fidgets," and "urinary difficulties in women" are Burnett's leading indications for Meny . The twitching may appear in any part. Stitches, numbness, tension, and especially cramp-like and paralysing pains are very distinctive. The pressure is severely felt in the head ─ Headache: pressing in vertex from above downwards, > during hard pressure with the hand; when ascending stairs, as of a heavy weight pressing on the head and brain at every step. With the headache there is often associated icy coldness of hands and feet. The tension culminates in a sensation as if the skin were several sizes too small and he was being crowded into it. R. Farley ( Med. Adv ., xxi. 240) reports this case: Miss D. W., long a sufferer from spinal irritation, had terrible attacks of bursting headache, a terrible tension in membranes of brain in paroxysms, which caused her to scream. Began in right side of nape, ascended to forehead, and then spread over whole brain. Terrible sensation of loneliness with the pain; begged her mother to stay with her. < From light, noise, jar, even if one walked lightly across the room. > From sitting bent, and by hard pressure on nape and vertex. Meny . 30 every ten minutes relieved immediately, and removed completely in two hours.

Injuries to nerves (tooth broken in). Quinine.

Mind

Anxiety and apprehension. ─ Anxiety about the heart, as if something evil were going to happen. ─ Indifference to everything. ─ Tearful sadness. ─ Taciturn and self-reflecting. ─ Buffoonery and excessive gaiety.

Head

Constant heaviness of head. ─ Compressive, or pressive headache, with a sensation when going upstairs as if a very heavy load were resting on forehead, > by pressing the hand on head. ─ Pressive pain from both sides of head. ─ Head bewildered and confused in a room, with slowness of conception, > in open air. ─ Tensive headache. ─ Burning pains on skin of forehead. ─ Drawing pain in r. lobe of cerebrum from below upward, ending in occiput. ─ Single stitches in l. side of brain up to crown. ─ When sitting, drawing in occiput. ─ After eating, emptiness of head. ─ External gnawing at vertex.

Eyes

Cloudiness of eyes, when reading (everything becomes black before eyes). ─ Frequent spasmodic stiffness of eyelids. ─ Pressing in eyes. ─ Mist and flickerings before eyes.

Ears

Tinkling in ears. ─ Cracking in ear, when chewing. ─ Discharge from ears (esp. after exanthemata). ─ Shootings in ears. ─ Feeling of coldness in ear. ─ Tinnitus when chewing.

Nose

Nauseous smell before nose, like that of rotten eggs. ─ Tension in root of nose.

Face

Redness and heat of face during sleep. ─ Heat in face, with. coldness of feet. ─ Visible (painless) twitching in muscles of face and eyelids. ─ Pain and cracking in the articulation of jaw when masticating.

8, 9. Mouth and Throat. ─ Sensation of paralysis on l. side of palate, when yawning and coughing. ─ Great dryness of throat without thirst. ─ Dryness of palate, causing a stinging when swallowing. ─ Dryness and roughness in throat, which impede deglutition of saliva.

Appetite

Desire for meat, and dislike to bread and butter. ─ Sweetish bitterness in mouth. ─ Frequent empty risings. ─ Troublesome confusion in head, after a meal. ─ Bulimy, sometimes, after eating.

Stomach

Contractive cramps in stomach. ─ Continual rumbling in stomach, as if it were empty. ─ Heat in stomach, followed by excessive hunger. ─ Sensation of coldness extending up œsophagus, with great nausea, following pressure in stomach.

Abdomen

Sensation of coldness in abdomen, esp. when pressing upon it with the hand, or in the morning when rising. ─ Pain, as from excoriation, in abdominal integuments. ─ Distension and fulness of abdomen, as if overloaded by food, with undiminished appetite, together with a sensation as of incarcerated flatulence, and frequent ineffectual efforts to emit flatus; fulness much < by smoking tobacco. ─ Distension of abdomen by abundant flatus. ─ Pinchings in abdomen.

Stool and Anus

Constipation. ─ Hard fæces, with pinchings in abdomen. ─ Bleeding, hæmorrhoidal tumours.

Urinary Organs

Frequent want to make water, with scanty emission.

Male Sexual Organs

Increase of sexual desire, without excitement of the imagination, or erection. ─ Both testicles drawn up, r. more than l. ─ Spermatic cord painful to touch.

Respiratory Organs

When speaking hoarse and rough voice, with obstruction of ears, as if something had been introduced into them. ─ Stitch in anterior regions of larynx, impeding deglutition. ─ Dyspnœa. ─ Spasmodic contraction of larynx, with excitation to cough, when drawing breath.

Chest

Shooting compression on both sides of chest. ─ The stitches in (r.) chest are < during motion, and when breathing. ─ Aching in chest after dinner.

Heart

Stitches in region of heart. ─ Anxiety about heart as if some evil impending. ─ Drawing pain in præcordia, < after eating.

Neck and Back

Rigidity and heaviness in muscles of neck (throat) and of nape. ─ Troublesome contusive pain in loins, when seated, and when stooping. ─ Dull and boring shootings in l. shoulder-blade, extending across spine. ─ Extremely painful tearing between scapulæ, extending downwards, esp. on deep breathing; disappearing when sitting; immediately returning on walking; during rest there remains a sensation of soreness.

Upper Limbs

Paralytic tearing and spasmodic drawings in arms, hands, and fingers. ─ Spasmodic stiffness of arms, with involuntary retraction of fingers. ─ Cramp-like pains in muscles of (l.) lower arm, extending as far as palm of hand (almost like paralysis). ─ Painful starting in (r. upper) arm and little finger.

Lower Limbs

Contusive pain in thighs. ─ Shocks and convulsive movements in thighs. ─ The (r.) thigh and leg are spasmodically jerked upward, when sitting with the leg outstretched, > when standing or when drawing up leg.

Buck Bean ; Bitterklee. Gentianaceæ.
A perennial which grows in boggy places, indigenous to America, Europe and Northern Asia. It blossoms in May and June ; flowers rose colored or whitish. The tincture is made from the fresh plant just coming into bloom.
Introduced by Hahnemann and proved by himself and his provers (Materia Medica Pura, vol. 5, p. 15).

Lower limbs

Shivering on upper part of body, with yawning.
Shuddering without chill (like from hearing horrible tales), only on upper body.
Coldness of abdomen, especially on pressure with hand.

Coldness of dorsal spine, with shaking.
General chill, which passes off near warm stove, remaining only on back.
Feet cold as far up as knees, as if they were in cold water.
Icy coldness of hands and feet, with warmth of rest of body.
Veins of lower arms and hands distended, while feet are icy cold.
Chilliness, especially of fingers and toes.
Heat without thirst.
Hot face, with cold hands and feet.
General heat in evening, most severe on head, attended with cold feet.
Sensation of heat, particularly in back, with intermingling coldness, particularly in abdomen.
Sweat in evening in bed immediately after lying down, frequently lasting whole night.
Intermittent fever, with chilliness in abdomen, lasting six days, when a disagreeable feeling of heat comes on, alternating or intermingling with chilliness, with cold feet and legs and slow pulse.
Paroxysm of fever daily at 9 A. M. ; heat, thirst, restlessness and redness of face and eyes lasted till 3 P. M.
Irregular intermittent paroxysm consists chiefly of a cold stage which is incompletely developed, hands or ends of fingers, and toes or feet, and end of nose alone becoming very cold.

Attacks, periodicity

Alternate : heat and chilliness.
Daily at 9 A. M. : fever.
Lasting from 9 to 3 P. M. : heat, thirst, restlessness and redness of face and eyes.
Lasting six days : intermittent fever, with chilliness.

Locality and direction

Right : stitch-like tearing in side of forehead ; twitching of facial muscles ; testicle drawn up ; sharp pain through upper side of chest ; stitches in chest ; muscular twitches in upper arm ; thigh and leg jerked upward ; cramplike pain in muscles of leg.
Left : stitches in side of brain ; pain in side of forehead ; paralytic feeling on side of throat ; dull boring stitch in shoulder blade ; dull boring sticking in scapula ; cramplike pain in muscles of forearm.
From above downward : pressure in head.

Sensations

As if some evil was going to happen ; as if a weight pressed upon brain ; as if cold wind was blowing on head ; abdomen as if overloaded by food ; as of incarcerated flatus ; as if something had been stretched across ears ; as if a thumb pressed on back ; as if feet were in cold water.
Pain : in forehead ; in articulation of jaw ; in back.
Sharp pain : through middle of upper right chest.
Jerking and pinching pain : in outer parts.
Stitchlike tearing : in right side of forehead.
Paralytic tearing : in arms, hands and fingers.
External painful tearing : between scapulæ.
Stitching contractive pain : in region of hip joint.
Stitches : in left side of brain ; in ears ; in anterior region of larynx ; in chest ; in both sides ; in region of heart.
Stinging, pinching pain : in limbs.
Stinging : in palate.
Burning pain : in forehead.
Pinching pain : in abdomen.
Cramplike pain : in muscles of left forearm ; in muscles of r. leg.
Cramplike drawing : in anterior portion of thigh.
Dull boring, sticking : in left scapula.
Bruised pain : in small of back ; in thighs.
External gnawing : on vertex.
Painful spasmodic jerking : of lower extremities.
Painful jactitation : of muscles of arm and little finger.
Muscular twitches : in right upper arm.
Throbbing : in epigastrium.
Anxiety : about heart.
Compressive pain : in vertex.
Pressive, stupefying headache.
Dull pain : in head.
Tingling : in back ; from elbows into hands and fingers.
Soreness : of abdominal walls.
Heat : of face ; in head ; in back.
Paralytic feeling : in left side of throat.
Spasmodic stiffness : of arms ; fingers.
Stiff feeling : in eyelids ; in muscles of neck and throat.
Dryness : of palate ; of throat.
Tension : in root of nose ; in arms, hands and fingers.
Constriction : in stomach ; in both sides of chest.
Pressure : in head ; in eyes ; in stomach ; in both sides of chest ; in back.
Heaviness : of head ; in muscles of neck and throat.
Fulness : of abdomen.
Coldness : of abdomen ; of dorsal spine ; of hands and feet ; of end of nose.
Cold feeling : of head ; in ears ; extending up œsophagus ; in abdomen ; in feet and legs.
Chilly sensation : in abdomen ; of fingers and toes.
Shivering : on upper part of body.

Touch. passive motion. injuries

Touch : spermatic cord painful ; on back, makes pain disappear.
Pressure : pain in forehead > ; coldness of abdomen > ; pain in thighs >.
Hard pressure : > pressure in head.
Injuries to nerves.

Stage of life, constitution

Child, æt. 22 months ; intermittent fever.
Man, æt. 78 ; cramps in legs.
Man, æt. about 50 ; respiratory and heart trouble.

Relations

Antidote : Camphor .
It antidotes chronic effects of Cinchon . and Quinia .
Compatible : Capsic., Lycop., Pulsat., Rhus tox ., which follow well.
Compare : Mag. mur., Paris quad . and Pulsat . in headaches ; Carbo veg . and Lycop . in gastric symptoms ; Laches . in chills and fever ; Calc. ostr . and Gelsem . in icy cold feet and legs.

Characteristic

Adapted to complaints from abuse of Cinchona and Quinine.

Fevers in which the cold stage predominates; coldness felt most acutely in abdomen and extremities (Ver.).

Anxiety about the heart, as if something evil were going to happen, precedes or attends many attacks.

Headache: pressing in vertex from above downwards, > during hard pressure with hand (Ver.); as of a heavy weight pressing upon the head at every step (Cac., Glon., Lach.); < ascending (Cal.); often with icy coldness of hands and feet (Cal., Sep.).

Tension: in root of nose; in arms, hands, fingers; in skin, as if several sizes too small and was crowded into it by force.

Aggravation

Evening; during rest; lying down.

Amelioration

Motion; pressing on the affected part.

Type

Quartan. Irregular.

Time

Irregular time.

Chill

Without thirst. Chilliness, especially of the fingers and toes. Chill over whole body, most severe in back, relieved by heat of stove; or chilliness, disappearing by warmth of stove and returning soon as he leaves the stove or remaining in the back only (not relieved by external warmth, Ver.—increased by external heat, Ipec.). Chilliness and cold creepings externally, without internal chilliness. Horripilation over the back, as if the parts had long been exposed to cold air, without chilliness. Coldness in the abdomen (Cal.), especially on pressure with the hand; on rising from bed in the morning, creeping coldness over abdomen, back and sides. Coldness of the spine, with shaking. Feet cold as far up as the knees, as if they were in cold water (coldness as far up as the ankles, Mag., Sep.). Icy coldness of the hands and feet, with warmth of the rest of the body.

Coldness of the dorsal spine, with shaking (see Quinia). Coldness of the feet lasting till night, could not get them warm in bed.

Shivering over the upper part of the body, with yawning, imme- diately. Febrile shivering over the whole back as if he had been uncovered for a long time in the open air. Veins of lower arms and hands distended, while the feet are icy cold (Puls.—of hands,

Led.).

Chill the predominant stage.

Heat

Without thirst; especially in the face, followed by chilly feeling. Great heat over the whole body, without sweat or thirst, with cold feet. Flushes of heat on trunk and back, with redness of face, mingled with sensation of coldness. Flushes of heat, with hot ears and cheeks. Increase of heat, with delirium.

Sweat

From evening till morning. Sweat at night imme- diately after lying down, continuing all night.

Tongue

Bitter-sweetish taste in the mouth. Ravenous hunger; great desire for meat (great aversion to meat, Arn.).

Pulse

Slow during the cold stage (Dig.); only slightly accelerated during heat.
