Keynote

For persons, especially children, of irritable disposition, nervous temperament (Cham.); lax fibre; sour smell of whole body (Rheum). The whole body feels tired and painful especially the legs and feet; aching, restless. Spasmodic affections of stomach and intestines (Col., Mag. p.), increased secretion from mucous membranes. Unrefreshing sleep, more tired on rising than when retiring (Bry., Con., Hep., Op., Sulph.). Inordinate craving for meat in children of tuberculous parentage. Heartburn; sour, belching, eructations, taste and vomiting; of pregnancy. Pains: neuralgic, lightening-like, < left side (Col.); insupportable during repose, must get up and walk (Rhus); toothache, during pregnancy < at night. Pain on vertex as if the hair were pulled (Kali n., Phos.). Menses: preceded by sore throat (Lac c.), labor-like pain, cutting colic, backache, weakness, chilliness; flows only at night or when lying, ceases when walking (Am. m., Kreos., - rev. or Lil.); acrid, dark, pitch-like; difficult to wash off (Med.). Diarrhoea: preceded by cutting, doubling-up colic; occurs regularly every three weeks; stools green, frothy, like scum of a frog-pond; white, tallow-like masses are found floating in stool; the milk passes undigested in nursing children. When crude magnesia has been taken to "sweeten the stomach;" if the symptoms correspond, the potentized remedy will often relieve.

General

Gastro-intestinal catarrh, with marked acidity. Often used with advantage for complains arising in people who have been taking this drug to sweeten the stomach. Is frequently indicated in children; whole body smells sour, and disposed to boils. Broken-down, "worn-out" women, with uterine and climacteric disorders. With numbness and distension in various, parts and nerve prostration. Sensitive to the least start, noise, touch, etc. Affection of the antrum of Highmore. Effects of shock, blows, mental distress. Sense of numbness; nerve prostration; tendency to constipation after nervous strain; sensitive to least touch, it causes starting, or cold winds or weather or from excess of care and worry with constipation and heaviness. Intense neuralgic pains.

Head

Sticking pain in the side of the head on which he lies, as if the hair was pulled; worse, mental exertion. Itching of scalp worse in damp weather. Pain above margin of right orbit. Blank motes before eyes.

Ears

Diminished hearing. Deafness; comes suddenly and varies. Numbness of outer ear. Feeling of distention of middle ear. Subdued tinnitus.

Face

Tearing pain in one side; worse; quiet; must move about. Toothache, especially during pregnancy; worse at night; worse, cold and quiet. Teeth feel too long. Ailments from cutting wisdom teeth (Cheiranthus). Pain in malar bone, worse during rest, night. Swelling of malar bone with pulsating pain, worse exposure to cold wind.

Mouth

Stool

Preceded by griping, colicky pain. Green, watery, frothy, like a frog-pond's scum. Bloody mucous stools. Milk passes undigested in nursing children. Sour, with tenesmus (Rheum). Constipation after mental shock or severe nervous strain.

Female

Sore throat before menses appear. Before menses, coryza and nasal stoppage. Menses too late and scanty, thick, dark, like pitch; mucous leucorrhœa. Menses flow only in sleep; more profuse at night (Amm m), or when lying down; cease when walking.

Respiratory

Ticking cough, with salty, bloody expectoration. Constrictive pains in chest, with dyspnœa. Soreness in chest during motion.

Extremities

Tearing in shoulders as if dislocated. Right shoulder painful, cannot raise it (Sang). Whole body feels tired and painful, especially legs and feet. Swelling in bend of knee.

Skin

Earthy, sallow and parchment-like; emaciation. Itching vesicles on hands and fingers. Nodosities under skin. Sore; sensitive to cold.

Fever

Chilly in evening. Fever at night. Sour, greasy perspiration.

Unrefreshing; more tired on rising than on retiring.

The salts of Magnesia are not new to the medical profession as remedies. Especially is the one under consideration so well known in its action upon the intestinal canal that it has for a long time been "my lady's" habitual resort for sour stomach and constipated bowels. Of course, then it should become a very useful remedy for diarrhœa in the hands of a Homœopathist, and so it is. The kind of diarrhœa to which it is most applicable is -"Stools green and frothy like the scum of a frog pond." All of the Magnesias are great pain producers, consequently pain relievers, and, as might be expected, the stools of Magnesia carb. are preceded by griping, doubling-up colic. So far as colic is concerned, sometimes it might be difficult to choose between Magnesia carb. and Colocynth, but the stools are not alike. Rheum comes nearest to Magnesia carb., in that both have colic before stool, sour stool and sour smell of the whole body; but with Magnesia the green stool stands first and with Rheum the sourness. The stool of Rheum is oftener dark brownish than green. Chamomilla has green stool with much pain, but the stool is watery, while Magnesia carb. is more slimy. Mercury has the slimy stool which may be green also; but with Mercury tenesmus is the leading symptom, and the mouth symptoms and sweat without relief under it are not like the other remedies. Magnesia carb. has toothache which at first sight seems to simulate that of Mercury. It comes in decayed teeth and is worse at night. There is a finer shade of difference, however, that distinguishes them. Mercury is worse from the warmth of the bed (a general characteristic of Mercury), while Magnesia carb. is worse quiet. The patient is obliged to walk about for relief. This kind of toothache is common among pregnant women, and I have often cured it. (Ratanhia.) I have used it in the 200th potency for this trouble. Have used it lower in diarrhœas. I once cured a severe case of coccydynia, a case of long standing. The pains were sudden, piercing, causing the patient to almost faint away. Magnesia carb. 200th cured promptly. Lobelia inflata has extreme sensitiveness; sits leaned forward to avoid contact of even soft pillow.

Mind and Disposition

Anxious, with perspiration all day. Uneasiness, with trembling of the hands and absence of mind. Sad mood, with indisposition to talk. Anxious and warm through the whole body, especially in the head, while eating warm food. Trembling, anguish and fear as if some accident would happen, all day, going a off after going to bed.

Head

Vertigo, when kneeling or standing, as if everything were turning around. Heaviness and dizziness in the head, early in the morning, when rising, going off after a walk. Pressure in the forehead. Pressing headache from mental exertion and when among many persons. Violent darting headache after vexation (1 to 10 P.M.). Lancinating headache early in the morning after rising. Pulsating sensation in the forehead. Congestion of blood to the head, especially when smoking. Heat in the head and hands with redness of the face, alternating with paleness of the face. Bruised sensation on the vertex. Pain on the top of the head, as if the hair were pulled. Dandruff on the scalp, itching during wet and rainy weather. Falling of the hair.

Eyes

Inflammation of the eyes, with redness, burning, stinging and obscuration of sight, or dim-sightedness. Swelling of the eyeball. Agglutination of the eyes early in the morning. Obscuration of the cornea. Black motes before the eyes. Obscuration of crystalline lens (cataract). Dryness of the eyes. Profuse lachrymation.

Ears

Inflammation of the ears, with external redness and sensation of great soreness. Great sensitiveness of the ear to noise. Hardness of hearing with whizzing before the ears. Whizzing, fluttering and buzzing in the right ear with hardness of hearing.

Nose

Bleeding from the nose in the morning. Vesicular eruption in the nose with pressing pain. Dry coryza and obstruction of the nose, waking one at night.

Face

Pale face, earthy, sickly complexion. Alternate redness and paleness of the face. Tension on the face, as if the white of an egg had dried on it. Nightly tearing, digging and boring in the malar bone, insupportable during rest, and driving one from one place to another. Swelling of the malar bone, with pulsating pain. Hard nodosities, bloatedness and swelling of the face. Herpetic eruption around the (lower part of the) mouth. Hard, little nodosities in both corners of the mouth.

Mouth and Throat

Beating and stinging in the teeth after eating. Toothache while riding in a carriage. Toothache at night, compelling one to rise and walk about, the pain is insupportable while at rest. Toothache, mostly burning, tearing, drawing, twitching, or great ulcerative pain, with twitching in the fingers and feet. Toothache during pregnancy. Ailments from cutting the wisdom teeth. Looseness of the teeth, with swelling of the gums. The toothache is aggravated from cold. Burning vesicles on the gums, on the inside of the cheeks, tongue, lips, and palate, they bleed from the least contact. Dryness of the mouth, especially at night and in, the morning. Stinging pain in the throat when talking and swallowing. Burning in the throat and palate, with dryness and roughness, as if scraped by the beard of a barleycorn. Frequent rising of mucus in the throat (morning) with roughness and dryness of the fauces. Soft, fetid tubercles of the color of peas are hawked up.

Stomach and Abdomen

Bitter taste in the mouth, the tongue coated white, the mouth and teeth are full of white, tough mucus, going off after rinsing the mouth. Sour taste in the mouth. Violent thirst for water, especially in the evening and at night. Desire for acid drinks. Sour eructations. Nausea and vertigo while eating, followed by retching and vomiting of bitter, salty water. Feeling of emptiness and qualmishness in the stomach, better after dinner. Ulcerative pain in the stomach, with great sensitiveness to pressure. Great heaviness in the bloated abdomen. Colic, pressing spasmodic-contractive pain. In the region of the liver, hardness and stitches. Colic followed by discharge of leucorrhœa. Cutting and pinching, in the abdomen.

Stool and Anus

Constipation, frequent ineffectual urging, to evacuate with small stool or only discharge of flatulence. Diarrhœa painful, stools green and frothy. Sour-smelling diarrhœa of children. Ascarides and lumbrici. Stitches in the anus and rectum, also with fruitless desire for stool.

Urine

Secretion of urine increased, pale, watery or green. Involuntary secretion of urine when walking or rising from the seat. White sediment in the urine. Burning and smarting during micturition.

Sexual Organs

Men. Sexual desire diminished, erections wanting. Discharge of prostatic fluid while passing flatulence. Women. Pressing towards the pelvis, as if menstruation would come on, with cutting in the abdomen. Menses too late or suppressed. Menstrual blood thick, dark, like pitch. During the menstruation, weakness, chilliness, headache, paleness of the face, pain in the small of the back, or spasmodic pressing pain in the abdomen with suppressed menstrual discharge. Fluor albus, of acrid white mucus, preceded by colic.

Respiratory Organs

Oppression of the chest with the sensation of constriction. Sensation of soreness in the chest or in the left side of the chest, region of the heart. Spasmodic cough from tickling in the larynx, with expectoration only in the morning and during the day of yellow, thin or tough mucus or of dark blood tasting salt. The cough is worse in the evening till after midnight.

Back and Neck

Stiffness in the neck. Pain in the back and small of the back at night, as if broken.

Extremities

Upper. Pain as from dislocation in the shoulder-joint when moving it. Rheumatic pain in the shoulders (at night) with tingling down to the fingers ; the pain prevents the least movement of the arm. Heat of the fingers. Red, inflammatory swelling of the fingers. The skin of the hands becomes chapped. Spreading blisters on the hands and fingers, with stinging. Lower. Restlessness in the legs. Drawing pains in the legs and feet. Itching of the buttocks, with red spots after scratching. Painful swelling in the bend of the knee. Cramp in the calves (at night). Burning spot on the tibia. Blood-boils on the lower leg.

Generalities

Epileptic attacks ; while standing or walking he frequently falls down suddenly with consciousness. Painfulness of the whole body. Sensation of being tired, especially in the feet and when sitting. A short walk tires much. Restlessness in the limbs in the evening after sitting long. Rheumatic pains in the limbs.

Sleep

Sleepiness during the day. Sleeplessness at night from oppression in the abdomen, or from anxious restlessness and internal heat, with aversion to being uncovered in the least. Many and anxious dreams, with starts and crying out in the sleep. Unrefreshing sleep, more tired in the morning than he was when lying down in the evening.

Fever

Pulse slightly accelerated only during the night. Chill and chilliness with external coldness in the evening, and after lying down, slowly going off. Chill running down the back. Heat mostly in the forenoon, frequently with perspiration on the head only. Heat after the evening chill. At night, anxious internal heat, with restlessness and aversion to being uncovered. Perspiration with thirst, from midnight till morning. Morning sweat. Perspiration is greasy, coloring the linen yellow, smelling sour or putrid.

Skin

Itching and great dryness of the skin. Large, stinging nodosities under the skin. Painful, small, red herpes, they scale off afterwards. Spreading blisters. Small blood boils (lower legs).

Conditions

Most symptoms come on at night and while at rest. Symptoms coming on while sitting, disappear or are better while walking.

Characteristics

Mag. c . is the leading partner in the well-known "Pulv. Rhei Co." of the B. P., still better known as "Gregory's Powder," one of the terrors of an allopathic nursery. The proportions are: Mag. c ., six parts; Rhubarb powder, two parts, and Ginger powder one part. A curious point about this mixture is that Mag. c . and Rheum are antidotal in Homœopathic practice, both having much acidity, and green, sour stools. "Fluid Magnesia" ( Liquor Magnesiæ Carbonatis ), a much more palatable dose, as my early memories tell me, is made by impregnating water in which freshly precipitated carbonate of magnesia is suspended with CO 2 . One fluid ounce contains gr. xiii. of Mag. c . The properties of Mag. c . from the old-school standpoint are summed up as "laxative, antacid, antilithic." Guernsey says of it: "We often use Mag. c . with great advantage for complaints arising in people who have been taking this drug to 'sweeten the stomach.' " In order to obtain a proper notion of the power and sphere of this great remedy it is best to put out of mind all thought of its old associations. We shall then be able to view it in its entirety and its old uses will be seen in their proper relations. Mag. c . has many points of contact with Gels., Cham . and Ars . in nervous irritation and sleeplessness. But the nervousness of Mag c . is of the type of nerve exhaustion. "Water containing Magnesia and that coming from magnesian limestone districts is peculiarly soft to the feel. There is reason for supposing that this softness has a soothing effect upon the nervous system when used in the form of baths ─ e.g ., Buxton and Matlock in England, Schlangenbad, Wildbad, Rehme, and it may be Gastein in Germany. It is often found that the physical characteristics of substances correspond with their dynamic influences, and thus with Magnesia ; it very frequently is required for nervous systems that demand a permanently soothing and sustaining influence. Its effects on the skin are reflected upon the primæ viæ or vice versâ ; for, on the mucous surfaces, quite apart from its antacid action, it proves soothing and sustaining" (Cooper). An indication given me by Cooper has been of immense service in numbers of cases. ─ It is "worn-out women" ─ that is, the state of nervousness induced by excess of the cares and worries of life. Mag. c . 200, repeated three or four times a day, has given untold relief to many a patient of this kind. When constipation and heaviness are present these will be removed at the same time. One leading note of Mag. c . is sensitiveness, mental and bodily, sensitive to touch, sensitive to cold air. Effects of shocks, blows, or mental distress. The least touch causes starting. This sensitiveness passes into neuralgic pains of the highest intensity, neuralgia, lightning-like; < on left side, insupportable during repose; must get up and walk about. The sufferings of the pregnant state ─ neuralgia, toothache, nausea ─ come into this category. An extra tax is made on the woman's strength at this period, and as so often happens the daily tasks go on as usual during the greater part of the time, so that a "worn-out" condition is induced. Mag. c . is of great value here. Mag. c . is to exhausted nerves what Chi . is to exhaustion from loss of fluids. But it must not be supposed that Mag. c . is a "nerve" medicine only. Tumours, even bony ones, have yielded to it; and it has been credited with the cure of cataract. I have no definite experience with it in cases of this last, though I have thought I observed improvement in some. But I have many times removed with it corneal opacities left by ulceration; and I practically cured with it a tumour of the right malar bone. The patient was a sea-captain, aged 50. I had saved a relation from some operation, and for this reason he came to me. Except for his trouble, which was steadily getting worse, he was quite healthy. His face was quite distorted; right cheek bulging out, nose pushed over to left side, right nostril stretched out. The malar bone was especially prominent near the wing of the nose. This was the only part that was tender. The tumour was softish as if cystic. There was no discharge. Inside the mouth the right side of the hard palate bulged into the mouth and was slightly tender to pressure. The tumour was the seat of a constant gnawing pain; but the thing that troubled him most was sensitiveness to cold winds and cold weather . This was so great that he was afraid he would have to give up his calling. This led me to give Silic . 30 in the first instance (on February 27, 1895); but Sil . only increased the pain. One night he awoke feeling all his back aching. I worked up the case more carefully and found this under Mag. c .: "Throbbing pain in antrum of Highmore with swelling of right malar bone"; and "facial neuralgia, left side, shooting like lightning; < from touch, draught, change of temperature ; cannot stay in bed, must walk the floor." Putting these together I prescribed (on March 13th) Mag. c . 30, giving four doses a day. March 28th Much less pain. Face much reduced, swelling softer, fluctuating. Swelling inside mouth softer." April 10th: "Very much better. Tumour smaller and softer." August 14th: "Face almost normal in appearance. Swelling inside mouth quite gone. Has no pain whatever, no sensitiveness to cold air. Had finished medicine in middle of July." He now joined his ship, and as he was generally away for years at a time that was the last I saw of him, but I gave him a supply of Mag. c . to take with him. The sensitiveness in this case was not that of nerve exhaustion, but it was sufficient to confirm the choice of the remedy, and it teaches us that it is never wise to narrow down the meaning of symptoms too closely. So whilst Mag. c . is suited to "persons, especially children, of irritable disposition, nervous temperament; lax fibre; sour smell" (Hering); and to "worn-out women, and dark-haired, sensitive people, spare-and thin" (Cooper); it is just as ready to cure a tough old sailor, impassive and stolid, provided he has sufficient Mag. c . symptoms about him. A knowledge of the temperaments of remedies often saves much trouble; but it must be used with brains. Two cases (related by A. I. Harvey) illustrating the power of Mag. c . in neuralgia are quoted in Amer. Hom ., xxii. 12. ( 1 ) Carpenter, 50, light complexion, spare, had had facial neuralgia two years coming in attacks, lasting from three to seven days, at intervals of two or three weeks. Pain sharp, shooting, from left side of face and head, < at night, from pressure, from jar. Mag. c . cured promptly after failure of Spig . ( 2 ) Blacksmith, 22, light complexion, full figure. For several years he had attacks of facial neuralgia coming on after taking cold. Pain very severe in left orbital region, shooting down into eye and face, and back to occipital region begins in morning, grows worse till noon, then subsides. No pain at night, rests well. Spig . and Kali bi . failed. Mag. c . cured promptly. Cooper mentions it, as a possible remedy in pyorrhea alveolaris. In the homœopathic nursery Mag. c . is just as indispensable a blessing as it is in the allopathic nursery an indispensable curse. For children who are puny and sickly; who refuse their milk and get pain in the stomach if they take it, diarrhœa, colic, stools green, like the scum of a frog pond, jelly-like lumps; aphthæ; marasmus, Mag. c . is a sovereign remedy. On September 25, 1899, I was written to from France about an infant girl seventeen months old. Up to three months before she had been perfectly well. Then diarrhœa came on. At first had ordinary stools which became loose; then green; sometimes very white, or bright slimy-yellow mixed with blood., and every time the bowels acted ( i.e ., every hour or hour and a half) she screamed before, during, and after the action. At the time of writing the stools were one or two in the night and three or four during the day. Still watery but seldom undigested. Always thirsty, but cannot take milk. Vomits food. Face pale, drawn; dark under eyes. Emaciated. So weak can hardly stand. Has eight teeth. I sent Mag. c . 30 to be taken four times a day. Report received October 6th. "Well. Was better after two doses. Can take cow's milk freely now.". ─ The acidity for which allopaths give Magnesia is a true enough indication; but not for the reason they give: Sour stools; sour sweat; sour smell of whole body; sour eructations from cabbage; sour vomiting; sour breath; sour taste-all these are caused and cured by Mag. c . Persons of lax fibre and sour smell are suited to Mag. c . The whole body feels tired and painful, especially the legs and feet; aching; restless. Spasmodic affections of stomach and intestines. Unrefreshing sleep; more tired on waking than on going to bed. Inordinate craving for meat in children of tubercular parentage. There is much suffering at the menses in women. They are preceded by labour-like pain, cutting colic, backache, weakness, chilliness. A grand characteristic is: Flows only at night or when lying, ceases when walking. The period is usually late and scanty. Flow acrid, dark, pitch-like, difficult to wash off. During pregnancy there is vomiting and toothache. Sensations of Mag. c . are: As if everything was turning round. As if hair was pulled. As if white of egg had dried on face. As if teeth too long. Throat as if scraped by an awn. As if rectum pricked with needles. Back as if broken. The pains are < by rest; insupportable; must get up and walk about. Rheumatic pains are < after a long walk, > by warmth, < in bed. Walking fatigues; = involuntary urination; prickings in rectum; smarting leucorrhœa. Walking stops menses. Cannot put left foot on ground when walking. Raising arm < pain in shoulder. Kneeling < vertigo; < 2-3 a.m. (sleeplessness); 4 a.m., intolerable pain in rectum. Symptoms generally < evening and especially at night. < From uncovering; great aversion to it. Eating warm food < ; = anxiety and warmth through whole body. Milk < . Warmth of bed < toothache. Cold < toothache. Cold water > toothache for a short time; then < . Wet and rainy weather = itching of scalp. Draught < facial neuralgia. There is periodicity with Mag. c .: every second day, every three weeks; "all symptoms < every third week." Touch and pressure < almost, all symptoms; but pressure in abdomen > menstrual flow. Pain is < on the side lain on. Smoking < headache.

Head

Ears

Inflammation of external ear, with redness and pain, as from ulceration. ─ Great sensitiveness to slightest noise. ─ Hardness of hearing, with humming in ears, esp. in a room. ─ Hardness of hearing with whizzing before the ears. ─ Whizzing, fluttering, and buzzing in r. ear with hardness of hearing. ─ Tinkling, rumbling, and a sensation as if a bird were flapping its wings in ears. ─ [The remaining ear symptoms are supplied by Cooper]: Constant roaring in head like steam, < when covered, with pain in occiput. ─ Noises as of bells, and sometimes of water rushing in l. ear, with numb feelings elsewhere. ─ Nervous deafness; exhausted hearing. ─ Nervous deafness; cannot bear a person to shout in her ears, pain across the lower back, stiffness, cannot turn in bed, the least excitement makes her tremble and turn cold; faints after exertion. ─ Deafness in a dark-haired woman caused by worry; hearing goes when over-tired; sensitive to interference. ─ May be said to be for deafness of middle and old age what Calc. is for the deafness of childhood. ─ Deafness rapidly progressing with heat on vertex, headache and tinnitus. ─ Deafness < on taking cold, and irregular but distressing tinnitus and a dead weight on vertex causing her to hang down her head. ─ Deafness from cutting wisdom teeth (relieved). ─ Loud explosions in ears waking her at night go away, and old swellings of glands that had disappeared return. ─ Earache (l.) with numb feelings and dull, heavy, singing noises. ─ Tinnitus (man, 29) constant, at times like a church bell, at others like a gas-jet, < when excited and after exertion. ─ In a nervous, excitable, impetuous girl of twenty, dark-haired, lifelong deafness which became suddenly worse after a fright five weeks before; much pain in l. groin at menstrual period, falls down in a faint and legs ache; hears best in street; after Mag. c . 30 pains at period went, spirits got better, and hearing in one ear (l.) got quite well. ─ Deafness, hearing goes in an omnibus, or when many are speaking, can hear in church till organ plays, exhausted by watching or anxiety, not by fatigue. ─ Deafness which comes on from fright or in a cold (in girl of twenty-nine, subject to recurring deafness and to headaches in l. eye extending along the l. side of head and a feeling of numbness in head). ─ Deafness, tuning-fork hearing imperfect, agitation and worry causes palpitation; slightest unexpected touch on body brings on tinnitus aurium, which seems to come from throat and back of neck; headache on vertex on rising in morning and confined bowels.

Nose

Epistaxis in morning. ─ Vesicular eruption in nose, with pressive pain. ─ Stoppage of nose. ─ Dry coryza, which admits of respiration only through mouth (waking one at night). ─ (Chronic affections of nose.)

Face

Discoloured, pale, earthy complexion. ─ Alternate redness and paleness of face. ─ Slovenly appearance. ─ Tension of face, as if albumen were dried on the skin. ─ Much pain in malar bones, at night, preventing sleep; or they may appear swollen. ─ Nocturnal pains in cheek bones, digging, boring, and tearing, insupportable during repose, and forcing removal from place to place. ─ (Tumour in r. cheek bone, painful, very sensitive to cold wind). ─ Throbbing pain in antrum of Highmore with swelling of r. malar bone. ─ Swelling of cheek bone, with throbbing pain. ─ Swelling of face, which is bloated and covered with tubercles. ─ Eruption of tetters round (lower part of) mouth. ─ Hard, little nodosities in both corners of mouth.

Teeth

Toothache from motion of a carriage. ─ Nocturnal pains in teeth, which force patient to get up and walk about, insupportable in a state of repose, and generally burning, boring, or like the pain of ulceration, or tearing, drawing, and jerking, extending to temples, with swelling of cheek on side affected, stiffness of nape of neck, and neck, and twitching in fingers and feet. ─ Throbbing and shooting in teeth after a meal. ─ Toothache < by cold. ─ (Toothache, l. side, coming on irregularly.). ─ Toothache during pregnancy. ─ Ailments from cutting wisdom teeth. ─ Looseness of teeth (with swelling of gums).

Mouth

Soreness of mouth with rawness and tenderness and minute ulcerations at tip of tongue, which is fissured and red, saliva acid and roof of mouth intensely irritable. ─ Violent pain in roof of mouth, cheeks, eyes, nose > hot fomentations; sometimes maddening pains and flashes before sight, with feeling of coldness all over, and of pins and needles in arms and fingers on going to sleep. ─ Burning vesicles on gums, on inside of cheeks, lips, and palate, they bleed from the least contact. ─ Bitter or sour taste in mouth. ─ Dryness of mouth, esp. night and morning. ─ Sanguineous saliva. ─ Vesicular eruption in mouth, and on tongue. ─ Small tubercles in mouth, which bleed and burn on slightest touch.

Throat

Sore throat, with shooting pain when speaking and swallowing. ─ Burning pain in throat and palate, with dryness and roughness, as if it contained bearded ears of corn. ─ Frequent rising of mucus in throat (morning) with roughness and dryness of fauces. ─ Soft, fetid tubercles of colour of peas are hawked up.

Appetite

Loss of taste. ─ Bitter taste, with a white tongue, and viscid mucus on tongue and teeth (going off after rinsing the mouth). ─ Acid taste in mouth. ─ Violent thirst (for water), esp. in evening and at night. ─ Desire for fruit; for acid drinks. ─ Aversion to green food. ─ Great desire for vegetables, with dislike for meat, and vice versâ .

Stomach

Acid risings. ─ Frequent risings, with pains in stomach. ─ Nausea and vertigo during a meal, followed by retching, and vomiting of bitter or saltish serum. ─ Pressive contractive pain in stomach, sometimes with sour risings. ─ Sensation of insipidity and emptiness in stomach, with nausea and inclination to vomit ( > after dinner). ─ Pain, as from ulceration, in stomach (with great sensitiveness to pressure).

Abdomen

Colic, pressing, spasmodic. ─ Contractive pain. ─ Griping, cutting, and rumbling in whole abdomen, followed by thin, green stools, without tenesmus. ─ Induration and shooting pains in hepatic region. ─ Excessive distension and tightness of abdomen, with sensation of heaviness. ─ Cramps in abdomen, followed by leucorrhœa. ─ Pinchings, cuttings, and acute drawings in abdomen. ─ Inguinal hernia. ─ Affections of the l. abdominal ring; great amount of flatus, which is sour when eructated.

Stool and Anus

Constipation. ─ (Constipation of neurasthenia. ─ Constipation with l. ovarian pain, or with heartburn. ─ R. T. C.). ─ Frequent and ineffectual want to evacuate, with scanty fæces, or only an emission of wind. ─ Greenish, frothy, and mucous diarrhœa (esp. in children, which looks like the green on a frog pond), with cutting pains. ─ Stools with white floating lumps, like tallow; always preceded by griping, < on r. side. ─ Diarrhœa of a sour smell (of children). ─ Ejection of ascarides and lumbrici. ─ Shootings in anus and rectum, esp. while suffering from tenesmus.

Urinary Organs

Secretion of urine, more copious than usual, watery, and of a pale or greenish colour. ─ Frequent emission of urine, even at night. ─ Involuntary emission of urine; when walking, or rising from a seat. ─ White sediment in urine. ─ Sensation of burning and excoriation when urinating. ─ Bladder and rectum become irritable (from 200th. ─ R. T. C.).

Male Sexual Organs

Diminished sexual desire. ─ Absence of erections. ─ Flow of prostatic fluid during the emission of flatus. ─ Scrotal hernia. ─ Frequent pollutions.

Female Sexual Organs

Backache and general flabby condition (in women). ─ Menstrual flow more profuse during night than day, with dragging pains, > from pressure on abdomen and stooping. ─ No menstrual discharge during the pains; only after them. ─ Sensation of bearing down towards groins, as if preparatory to catamenia, with cutting pains in abdomen. ─ Catamenia retarded, or completely suppressed; too scanty; or premature, and accompanied by a variety of sufferings. ─ Constant headache, at each excessive menstrual period. ─ Falls down in a dead faint at each menstrual period, with aching pains in limbs, which feel useless, and l. ovarian pain. ─ Emission of deep-coloured, thick, glutinous, and pitch-like blood, with the catamenia. ─ Before the catamenia: pains in loins, colic, bulimy, frequent risings, and nausea. ─ During catamenia: dejection, shivering, pains in head, paleness of face, pains in loins, and cramp-like, pressive pains in abdomen, which arrest the menstrual flux. ─ Discharge of white and corrosive mucus from vagina, sometimes preceded by cramps in abdomen. ─ Toothache of pregnant females. ─ Sore throat before menstruating.

Respiratory Organs

Cough excited by a tickling in throat, with a serous and saltish expectoration. ─ Expectoration only in morning of thin or tough mucus or of dark blood tasting salt. ─ Cough < in evening till after midnight. ─ Cramp-like cough at night. ─ Cough in morning, with expectoration of a yellowish pus. ─ Expectoration of tubercles as big as a pea, and very offensive in smell. ─ Expectoration of blood when coughing.

Chest

Oppression of chest, with sensation of constriction. ─ Oppression of chest, with shortness of breath, esp. when walking. ─ Pressure and sensation of heaviness, or incisive and shooting pains in chest. ─ (A lady, 32, without chest symptoms, took Mag. c . 200 through the day, and at night brought up quantities of phlegm, with constant cough, and movement of bowels. ─ R. Heart

Pain as of excoriation, and shootings, in l. side of chest, and in region of heart. ─ Palpitation of heart and whole l. side painful, with nightmare (in patient taking Mag. c . 200; otherwise she felt lifted up and stimulated. ─ R. T. C.)

Neck and Back

Stiffness in nape of neck. ─ Stiffness in neck. ─ Tearing, and successive pullings, in nape of neck. ─ Shootings in loins. ─ Much pain in head and r. shoulder; pain as if dislocated on raising arm. ─ Contusive pains in sacrum and back, at night. ─ Pain in back and small of back at night, as if broken.

Upper Limbs

Wrenching pain in shoulder-joint, while in motion. ─ Pain in top of shoulder-joints, generally r. side, which prevents raising arm. ─ Fits of tearing in shoulder, esp. at night, with tingling, extending to fingers, and inability to move arms, in consequence of the acuteness of the pain. ─ Drawing pain in arms and hands. ─ Cracked skin of hands. ─ Cramp-like tension in joints of fingers. ─ Heat in fingers. ─ Red and inflammatory swelling of fingers. ─ Spreading blisters on hands and fingers, with stinging.

Lower Limbs

Restlessness in legs. ─ Drawing pain in legs and feet. ─ Itching of buttocks, with red spots after scratching. ─ Painful swelling in ham. ─ Cramps in calves of legs at night. ─ Burning places on shin. ─ Furunculi on legs.

Generalities

Painful sensitiveness of whole body. ─ Drawing and tearing in limbs. ─ Rheumatic pains in limbs. ─ Rheumatic pains in shoulders. ─ Neuralgic lightning-like pains. ─ Painful shocks in different parts. ─ Frequent falling, without loss of consciousness, when walking or standing. ─ Epileptic fits. ─ Dazed feeling, packs and unpacks her clothes on a journey, without consciousness of having done so. ─ Relaxation of whole body. ─ Lassitude, principally in feet, and when seated. ─ A short walk tires much. ─ Restlessness in the limbs, in the evening, after sitting a long time. ─ The symptoms manifest themselves, or are < , at night, and during repose. ─ The symptoms, which appear when in the sitting posture, are > by movement.

Skin

Violent itching, and great dryness of skin. ─ Violent itching over whole body. ─ Large nodosities between the skin and the flesh, with shooting pains. ─ Nettle-rash with much swelling in feet and hands, and up both sides of face, knuckles disappear in the swelling, and ears sing and buzz and become deafened (in woman, 30, from the 200th. ─ R. T. C.). ─ Small, painless, red tetters, which ultimately exfoliate. ─ Spreading blisters. ─ Small blood boils (lower legs). ─ Corroding vesicles.

Sleep

Frequent and violent yawning. ─ Inclination to sleep during day. ─ Sleeplessness, sometimes from oppression in abdomen, or from anxious uneasiness and internal heat, with great dread of being uncovered. ─ Sleeplessness; from flatus; cutting wisdom-teeth; exhaustion. ─ Many anxious dreams, with talking, cries, and starting from fright. ─ Dreams of fire, flood, robbers, quarrels, money, pleasures, misfortunes, dead persons, &c. ─ Sleep at night unrefreshing, with fatigue as great in morning as before going to bed in evening; early awakening, with difficulty in again going to sleep. ─ Cannot sleep after 2 or 3 a.m.

Fever

Shivering in evening. ─ Chill and chilliness with external coldness in evening, and after lying down, slowly going off. ─ Chill running down back. ─ Heat mostly in the forenoon, frequently with perspiration on head only. ─ Heat after evening chill. ─ At night, anxious internal heat, with restlessness and aversion to being uncovered. ─ Perspiration with thirst, from midnight till morning. ─ Morning sweat. ─ Sensation of heat in morning, without perspiration and without thirst. ─ Nocturnal sweat, often fetid and greasy (colouring the linen yellow). ─ Sour sweat.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Feeling of emptiness and qualmishness in stomach ; > after dinner.
Great amount of wind, which is sour when eructated.

Meteorism of stomach when it is sensitive to touch ; no eructation.

Hypochondria

Hardness with stitches in hepatic region.
Insupportable pain in left hypochondriac region through to back ; must support spot with hand and get up and walk about ; < lying down and at night ; sleepless for one week ; toothache in right upper and lower jaw < from cold water.

Abdomen and loins

Pain over umbilicus, when feeling that part.
Cutting about navel, > from emitting flatus.
Cutting and pinching in abdomen ; griping before stool.
Pressing, spasmodic, contracting, colicky pains ; > by green stools.
Colic, followed by leucorrhœa.
Great heaviness in bloated abdomen.
Pressing towards pelvis, as if menses would come on, with cutting in abdomen.
Abdomen excessively distended ; profuse emission of flatus, with relief.
Violent audible rumbling, gurgling, and moving back and forth, with fine cutting in abdomen all day.
Affection of left abdominal ring ; inguinal hernia.

Stools and rectum

Stools : green, like scum on a frog pond ; sour, frothy ; with white, floating lumps, like tallow ; bloody, mucous ; green, mucous ; greenish yellow ; brown, fluid ; green and frothy ; of a liver colored
fluid ; followed by tenesmus and burning ; of greenish water, with great distension of abdomen.
The bloody mucus is found mixed with green, watery stool, sinking to bottom of vessel and adhering there ; but the watery stool occurs alone. θ Dysentery. θ Infantile
diarrhœa.
Lienteria of sucklings ; milk passes undigested.
Diarrhœa, with violent cutting colic and pressure, as many as seven or eight times a day, for eight days.
Griping and rumbling in whole abdomen, followed by diarrhœa, thin and green, without tenesmus.
Diarrhœa ; preceded by cutting colic ; much wind in bowels.
Green, watery diarrhœa regularly every three weeks.

Urinary organs

Urine : increased, pale, watery or green ; with white sediment.
Involuntary urination while walking or rising from a seat.
Burning, smarting during urination.

Male sexual organs

Sexual desire diminished ; erections wanting.
Prostatic fluid so easily discharged that even emission of flatus causes it.
Inguinal and scrotal hernia.

Female sexual organs

Menses : late, scanty ; stop in afternoon ; flow acrid, dark, pitch-like ; profuse and too early, flowing more at night and at first on rising, also between uterine pains ; blood thick, dark, glutinous, like pitch, difficult to wash
off.
Before menses : coryza and obstructed nostrils, sore throat, labor-like pains, cutting colic, backache, weakness, chilliness.
At commencement of menses, heavy headache, coryza, pale face, drawing pain in sides and great lassitude.
During menses : violent pains in abdomen ; weakness, chilliness, headache, paleness of face, pain in small of back, or spasmodic, pressing pain in abdomen.
Menses flow more profusely during night, with dragging pains ; > on pressing on abdomen and on stooping.
Menses lessen or cease to flow in afternoon.
Flow dark, very profuse, but much more profuse during night and at first rising than during day ; on rising in morning, contractive pain in abdomen, and sharp upward stitches in rectum, followed by discharge of coagula from vagina.
Milk always causes distress in stomach and sour risings ; subject to frequent diarrhœa. θ Metrorrhagia.
Leucorrhœa : acrid, white, mucous, preceded by colic ; watery after menses ; thin, scanty, with pinching around navel ; smarting in afternoon, when walking or sitting.
Frequent itching of pudendum.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

Toothache during pregnancy, more during night.
During pregnancy : constant nausea, no vomiting ; sour taste and sour vomiting ; appetite for certain kinds of food ; earthy color of face ; tendency to cry ; stitches in l. side under short ribs ; all symptoms < every
third week ; much roughness, or stinging, or burning in throat, with desire to vomit ; eructations tasting of rotten eggs.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Sudden stammering ; occasional aphasia.

Cough

Cough : spasmodic, at night ; from tickling in larynx ; sputum, mornings and during day, yellow, thin or tough mucus, or dark blood, tasting saltish ; < in evening until after midnight.
Fits of spasmodic cough at night in persons much troubled with ascarides.
Expectoration of soft tubercles big as a pea and very offensive in smell.

Inner chest and lungs

Oppression of chest, with sensation of constriction.
Soreness in chest and region of heart ; stitches.
Stitch from without inward in precordial region.

Neck and back

Stiffness in neck.
Pain in back and small of back at night, as if broken.
Sudden, violent, concussive, tearing, stitching pain in coccygeal region as if spine was bent back.

Upper limbs

Much pain in head and right shoulder ; she can scarcely raise right arm.
Pain as from dislocation of shoulder joint when moving it.
Rheumatic pain in shoulders (at night), with tingling down to fingers ; pain prevents least movement.
Lameness of right arm, with pain in shoulder, without swelling of soreness.
Tubercle on wrist pouring out clear water when pressed.
Chapping of skin of hands.
Spreading, corroding, stinging vesicles on hands and fingers.
Red, inflammatory swelling of fingers.
Heat of fingers (in fever).

Lower limbs

Restlessness in legs.
Drawing pains in legs and feet.
Itching of buttocks, with red spots after scratching.
Pains around left knee, like something tight ; left calf hard ; hard swelling in hollow of knee ; cannot put left foot to ground when walking, but only when standing. θ Affection

Painful swelling in bend of knee.
Knees painful in walking, feet when lying in bed.
Cramp in calves (at night).
Burning spot on tibia.
Œdema of feet up to calves.
Blood-boils on lower legs.

Lecture

This remedy has only been partially proved, and comes to us now as Hahnemann left it.

The mental symptoms and symptoms of some portions of the body and particulars have not been fully brought out. The remedy really needs reproving with high potencies upon sensitive provers that the finer shades may be understood. I would not speak of it but for the fact that it relates to a class of cases so very important that you will not be able to get along without it. It is related to the older and deeper psoric sickness. It is deep acting and long acting and permeates the economy as thoroughly as Sulphur.

General features

Some of the most striking general features are: Amelioration from motion; desire for open air, yet very sensitive to cold air; wants to be covered during all stages of fever; daily evening fevers; symptoms recurring every twenty-one days. Sensation of heat and even sweat from eating and drinking warm things; evening thirst.

Like other Magnesias it has most violent neuralgic pains, pains along the course of nerves, pains so violent that he cannot keep still, and he moves about and is relieved by motion. The provers felt these pains mostly in the head and face, but clinical experience has demonstrated that it has violent neuralgia everywhere.

We are justified from the proving, in considering it as especially related to the left side of the face; neuralgia in the night; driving him out of bed, keeping him in constant motion. As soon as he stops moving the pain becomes very severe, shooting, tearing and cutting.

It has varied eruptions upon the skin; dry scaly, dandruff-like eruptions upon the skin, very unhealthy hair and nails. Particularly does it affect the teeth and roots of the teeth. In every change of the weather the roots of the teeth become violently painful, burn, shoot and ache continuously. Toothache before and during menstruation.

During pregnancy she suffers all the time with toothache, tearing pains in the left side of the face, although the roots of the teeth are perfectly sound. The hollow teeth are unusually sensitive, and painful. The teeth are so sensitive that they cannot be manipulated by the dentist.

This is like Ant. crud., but Magnesia carb. especially affects the roots of the teeth, while Ant. crud. affects the dentine more particularly. Sensitiveness of the teeth, so that he cannot bite upon the teeth, and the teeth feel too long. Magnesia carb, and China , when no other symptoms are present, are prominent remedies among the affections of the teeth during pregnancy.

There is a kind of marasmus that you will puzzle over if you do not know this remedy. If we analyze the remedy in general, we will see that it produces a state of the body like that prior to tuberculosis.

He does not undergo, repair, he loses flesh, and the muscles become flabby as if some serious disease were coming. In children of tuberculous parents there is that tendency to go into marasmus. The child's muscles are flabby, the child will not thrive in spite of feeding and medicines. It seems to be laying the foundations for some serious trouble.

Finally, it emaciates and the back of the head begins to sink in, as if from atrophy of the cerebellum. The appetite increases for milk and meat and animal broths, and yet they are not digested, and when the milk is taken it continually passes the bowel in the form of white potter's clay, or like putty.

The stool is soft and of the consistency of putty. If you go through a china factory where the men are forming with their hands, in such wonderful manner, all sorts of beautiful dishes, and moulds, you will see that the original clay, as they are manipulating it, is white. It is a perfect picture of the Mag. carb. stool, composed of putty-like undigested milk.

I have observed, especially among illegitimate infants, those that have been conceived by clandestine coition, that they have a tendency to sinking in the back of the head. The occipital bone will sink in, and the parietal bones jut out over it, and there will be a depression. That is not an uncommon thing in children that go into marasmus. They are very likely to have a potter's clay stool. It does not run, and it is not hard.

The white, hard stool is quite another symptom, and the soft semi-fluid white stool leads to another class of remedies, but this pasty stool, looking as if it could be moulded into any kind of shape, is a Magnesia carb. stool. I once had in charge an orphanage, where we had sixty to one hundred babies on hand all tho time. The puzzle of my life was to find remedies for the cases that were going into marasmus. A large number of them were clandestine babies. It was a sort of Sheltering Arms for these little ones.

The whole year elapsed, and we were losing babies every week from this gradual decline, until I saw the image of these babies in Magnesia carb., and after that many of them were cured.

The Mag. carb. baby smells sour like the Hepar baby.

Wash it as you will and it smells sour; the perspiration is sour, and the whole baby smells sour. It is not especially the stool. The stool smells strong and pungent putrid, and very often the whole child has a pungent odor, like an unclean baby, though it be well washed.

The Magnesias produce inactivity of the rectum and anus - a paresis. The stool is large and hard, requiring great straining to expel. It is dry, hard and crumbling. The stool will remain partly expelled and then crumble, breaking up in many pieces. Another stool that is laid down in the books as a most striking condition of Magnesia carb. is green; it is the diarrheic stool, and the green part floats upon the watery portion of the stool.

The stool is often lumpy, and liquid.

The lumps lie in the bottom of the vessel, but floating upon the liquid portion of the stool is the green like the scum of the frog pond. This is recognized as one of the most striking features.

"Stools green, like scum on a frog pond; sour, frothy; with white floating lumps like tallow, bloody, mucous."

Floating like lumps of tallow, is more characteristic of Phosphorus, and many a time has Dulcamara cured it.

The face of the chronic adult case is pale, waxy, sickly and sallow. and you wonder why this patient will not right up, and will not thrive. She has a sickly countenance, her muscles are lax , she becomes so tired and sweats upon little exertion.

She is disturbed in every change of the weather, and is worse at the beginning of menstruation, She seems to take cold whenever menstruation is coming on. She says:

"I know my menstrual period is coming on, because I have a cold in my head."

Magnesia carb. has coryza every month before. the monthly period.

These patients take on an appearance as if going into decline, and yet they go on year after year unable to do anything; not able even to keep house, have a violent craving for meat and an aversion to vegetable food, grow thin and increasingly flabby, muscles relaxed, and with tendency to prolapsus. The walls of the abdomen have a tendency to fall down and to be relaxed, and the rings favor the formation of hernia.

That is the kind of relaxation. The nerves are painful, and the muscles are tired. When you have such a case and have prescribed, and they persist in spite of every remedy, you know that the case does not well indicate a remedy, that the conditions are latent and there is a tendency to some grave internal disorder. The organs are threatening to break down; the kidneys, the heart, the lungs, or the brain are about to undergo organic change.

We have a catarrhal state in this remedy, but it is a dry catarrh, not much discharge. An old ulcer will dry up and become shiny and discharge almost nothing. The nose is dry and the eyeballs are so dry that the lids stick together and it is difficult to open the eyes. The skin becomes dry and itches and burns. Tendency to dryness of the mucous membranes and dryness of the skin. Dryness is a marked feature of this medicine.

"Inordinate appetite for meat in children."

The stomach is a troublesome organ. The Magnesia carb. patient is always complaining of a sour stomach; sour eructations. Food comes up sour. There is nausea and coming up in the throat of sour food. Pains in the stomach after eating an ordinary amount of food; bloated after eating; much flatulence after eating. The stomach digests the food slowly and it becomes sour.

This remedy is especially useful if the history has been a tubercular one. Losing flesh and craving for meat in those who are tubercular, or in those, that are from tubercular parents.

Patients suffering from a dry cough.

Dry cough before the evening chill like Rhus tox. There are persons who have simply this tendency who go along year after year in this withered state, with the little hacking cough, not rousing up into much. Finally some favorable circumstance arises and the tuberculosis comes on rapidly after it has remained in a sluggish state for a long time.

There are a few remedies more likely to be associated with that condition than any others, Arsenicum, Calc. carb., Lycopodium, Magnesia carb. and Tuberc . They fit into this lingering state, this prelude to active phthisis.

They sometimes set a patient thriving, but mind you, these cases are hard cases to manage. They are difficult to find remedies for. Their trouble is so latent, the symptoms do not come out, and sometimes you have to read between the lines. They are the one-sided cases spoken of by Hahnemann.

In addition to this dry, tickling cough, which is not mentioned in the books, we find

"Cough, spasmodic at night from tickling in the larynx."

"Sleepiness during the day and sleeplessness at night."

When you have seen many of these cases that are threatening to go into phthisis, you will notice that it is a general feature with all of them.

"Doctor, I am so tired in the morning; while I sleep some in the night, in the morning I feel as if I had not slept."

Always tired and relaxed. Most of these subjects are cold and chilly. This, state has not been bought out yet in the remedy, but clinically it relates to cold and chilly patients. Patients who say that they have not much blood.

Characteristic

For persons, especially children, of irritable disposition, nervous temperament (Cham.); sour smell of the whole body (Rheum).

The whole body feels tired and painful, especially the legs and feet.

Pains: neuralgic, lightning-like, worse left side (Col.—worse right side, Mag. p.); insupportable during repose, must get up and walk about; toothache during pregnancy < at night.

Pain on vertex as if the hair were pulled (Kali n., Phos.).

All the symptoms are aggravated every third week (feels badly week before menstruation, Kali c.).

Menses: preceded by sore throat (Lac c.), labor-like pains, cutting colic, backache, weakness, chilliness; flow only at night or when lying, and in absence of uterine pains, cease when walking (Am. c., Kreos.—rev. of Lil.); acrid, dark, pitch-like; difficult to wash off.

Inordinate craving for meat in children of tuberculous parentage.

Diarrhœa: preceded by cutting colic; occurs regularly every three weeks; stools, green, frothy, like scum of a frog pond; white, tallow-like masses are found floating in stool; milk passes undigested in nursing children.

Unrefreshing sleep, more tired on rising than when retiring (Bry., Con., Hep., Op., Sulph., Tub.).

Relations

Complementary: Chamomilla.

Aggravation

Cold; draft; change of temperature; contact; every third week; rest; milk during menses.

Amelioration

Warm air, but worse in warmth of bed (Led., Mur.—> in warmth of bed, Ars.).

Type

Periodicity not marked. Quotidian generally.

Symptoms return periodically every three weeks.

Time

9 A. M., and 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10 P. M.

Chill

Chilliness in bed, as if dashed with cold water (Ant. t., Led., Sab.). Shaking chill beginning in the feet, going off in bed. Shaking chill at 9 P. M.; even in bed she was unable to get warm for an hour. Shivering at 10 P. M. in bed without subsequent heat, sweat or thirst (without subsequent heat or sweat, Bov., Sul.). Coldness of feet, as if wading in cold water (as if standing in cold water up to the ankles, Sep.). Chill running down the back; lessened by out-door exercise.

Heat

A feeling of warmth streams through her whole body (as if vapors rise up to the brain, Lyssin., Sarac.—as of hot water running through the veins, Ars., Bry., Rhus). Great internal heat at night, could scarcely remain in bed, yet dreads the slightest exposure (Bar., Nux). Great aversion to uncovering (Bell.—cannot move in the least or be uncovered without feeling chilly, Nux). Heat of the head, face, hands; one-sided (right), mostly in forenoon; redness, burning and thirst for half an hour; often with sweat on the head.

Sweat

Profuse, with thirst; from 12 P. M. till morning; on slight motion; offensive night sweat Sour-smelling, oily perspiration, difficult to wash off; stains yellow.

Tongue

Clean or white-coated; taste sour, bitter. Desire for meats, acid drinks.

Analysis

The constitutional symptoms are the chief guides.
