Keynote

Dark complexion, slight, lean, ill-developed, poorly nourished, overgrown; very tall for her age (Phos.). Children: old looking, wrinkled (Abrot.); scrofulous or psoric affections; rapid emaciation (Iod.); post climacteric diseases of women (Lach.). Haemorrhagic diathesis; small wounds bleed freely (Crot., Lach., Phos.); flow passive, in epistaxis, haemoptysis, haematuria; in typhoid, followed by great prostration; dark, oozing, after the extraction of a tooth (Ham.). Lochia: dark, brown, lumpy, offensive, acrid; almost ceases then freshens up again (Con., Sulph.). Violent corrosive itching of pudenda and vagina.

Relations

Kreosote is followed well by Ars., Phos., Sulph., in cancer and disease of a malignant tendency. Carbo veg. and Kreosote are inimical.

Aggravation

In the open air; cold weather; when growing cold; from washing or bathing with cold water; rest, especially when lying.

Amelioration

Generally better from warmth.

Kreosotum is a mixture of phenols obtained from this distillation.

Pulsations all over the body, and profuse bleeding from small wounds. Very severe, old neuralgic affections; pains rather aggravated by rest. Excoriating, burning, and offensive discharges. Hæmorrhages, ulcerations, cancerous affections. Rapid decomposition of fluids and secretions, and burning pains. Overgrown, poorly developed children. Post-climacteric diseases. Tumefaction, puffiness, gangrene. Ailings of teething children.

Mental

Music causes weeping and palpitation. Vanishing of thought; stupid, forgetful, peevish, irritable. Child wants everything but throws it away when given.

Head

Dull pain, as from a board pressing against forehead. Menstrual headache. Occipital pain (Gels; Zinc pic).

Eyes

Salty lachrymation. Lids red and swollen.

Ears

Eruption around and pimples within. Difficult hearing and buzzing.

Respiratory

Winter coughs of old people, with heavy pressure on sternum. Gangrene of lungs. After every cough, copious, purulent expectoration. Hæmoptysis; periodic attacks. Sternum feels pressed in.

Back

Dragging backache, extending to genitals and down thighs. Great debility.

Extremities

Pain in joints, hip and knee. Boring pain in hip-joints. Scapulæ sore.

Skin

Itching, worse towards evening. Burning in soles. Senile gangrene. Small wounds bleed freely (Crot; Lach; Phos). Pustules and herpes. Ecchymosis; dorsal surface of fingers and hands eczematous.

Sleep

Disturbed with tossing. Paralytic sensation in limbs on waking. Anxious dreams of pursuit, fire, erections, etc.

Modalities

Worse, in open air, cold rest, when lying; after menstruation. Better, from warmth, motion, warm diet.

Relationship

Antidote: Nux. Inimical: Carbo.

Complementary in malignant diseases: Ars; Phos; Sulph.

Guaiacol (is the principal constituent of Kreosote, and similar in action. Used in pulmonary tuberculosis. Dose 1 to 5 m).

Matico-Artanthe or Piper augustifolia, (Gonorrhœa, hæmorrhage from lungs; catarrhal conditions of genito-urinary organs and gastro-intestinal tract. Topically a hæmostatic. Difficult, dry, deep, winter cough. Use tincture).

Dose

Third to thirtieth potency. The 200th in sensitive patients.

This curious substance seems to act chiefly upon the mucous membranes, producing profuse and offensive secretions and ulcerations, with greatly depressed vitality. This is especially true of the genital organs of the female. Leucorrhœa is putrid, acrid, corrosive, staining the linen yellow. The parts with which the discharge comes in contact itch and burn, while scratching does not relieve but inflames the parts. This remedy has a tendency to hæmorrhages, which are often very obstinate. The hæmorrhages occur with leucorrhœal trouble; they are intermittent, will almost stop, then freshen up again and again. This is often the case with the lochia after confinement, when the choice may lie between these three remedies, Kreosote, Rhus tox. and Sulphur. The other symptoms must decide between them. This ulceration may be found in cancer of the uterus, and then Kreosote will often be of great value. I have no doubt that many cases which degenerate into cancer might be prevented by its timely use. In some cases there is awful burning in the pelvis, as of red-hot coals, with discharge of clots in foul smelling blood. I see that Guernsey recommends it in cancer of the mammæ, saying it is hard, bluish-red and covered with scurvy protuberances. I have never so used it, but in corrosive leucorrhœas and ulcerations I have with great satisfaction. I generally used it in the 200th, with simply tepid water injections for cleanliness.

There is perhaps no remedy that has a more decided action upon the gums (not even Mercury) than this one. It is not used often enough in painful dentition. The gums are very painful, swell, look dark-red or blue, and the teeth decay almost as soon as they are born. A child that has a mouth full of decayed teeth, with spongy, painful gums, will find its best friend in Kreosote. Cholera infantum in such children is of common occurrence, and is of a very severe type, for the vomiting is incessant and the stools cadaverous smelling. Never forget Kreosote in cholera infantum, which seems to arise from painful dentition. or in connection with it, for I have seen some of the finest effects ever witnessed from any remedy from this one.

I have used it here also in the 200th. Kreosote is also one of our best remedies in other kinds of vomiting; in the vomiting of pregnancy and in that other intractable disease of the stomach, known as gastromalacia. I do not know any characteristic indication for it here; but should I find the troubles before mentioned, in part or whole such as corrosive leucorrhœa, or the hæmorrhages, or a general hæmorrhagic tendency, small wounds inclined to bleed profusely (like Lachesis and Phosphorus), I would feel confident of Kreosote.

Kreosote has strong characteristics in regard to urination.

First, it has copious pale urine.

Second, they can't go quick enough, the urging is so great or sudden. (Petroselinum.)

Third, the child wets the bed during first sleep, which is very profound, can hardly wake it. (Sepia).

Can only urinate when lying. (Zinc. met., only when sitting bent back).

To recapitulate. Bad teeth and gums "from way back," fœtid corrosive discharges; great debility and hæmorrhagic tendency, should always call to mind this remedy.

Mind and Disposition

Low-spirited, inclined to weep, longing for death ; music and other subduing emotions cause him to weep. Ill-humor (in the morning), with disposition to weep.

Head

Weakness of memory. Painful dulness of the head, as ; after intoxication. Heaviness in the forehead and sensation as if the brain would fall out. Pulsation in the forehead, vertex (when awaking in the morning), with heat in the face. Painfulness of the scalp when combing the hair (the hair falls off).

Eyes

Itching and biting in the eyes, on the edges of the eyelids ; when rubbing them they become red and feel worm. Burning and heat in the eyes, with tears, especially when looking into a bright light. Discharge of hot, acrid, smarting tears, like salt water ; worse when rubbing the eyes, or early in the morning, on waking. Twitching of the lids (uncontrollable). Dim-sightedness, as if looking through gauze. Sensation as if something were floating before the eyes, obliging one to wipe them constantly.

Ears

Stitches in the ears. Itching in the ears (and soles of the feet). Humid herpes on the ears, with swelling of the cervical glands and livid, gray complexion. Inflammation of the (left) outer ear, red, hot, swollen, burning, proceeding from a pimple in the concha, with stiffness and pain as the left side of the neck, shoulder and arm.

Nose

Bad smell before the nose (on waking). Bleeding of the nose (in the morning).

Face

Livid complexion, with swelling of the cervical glands. Great heat and brown redness of the face (during the siesta), with throbbing in the cheeks ; and forehead, and frequent micturition. Scaly herpes on the eyelids, cheeks and around the mouth. Dry lips, with peeling off.

Mouth and Throat

Toothache, extending to the temples, to the left side of the face. The teeth feel as if they were too long. Gums inflamed (left upper side). Scraping in the throat, with roughness and dryness.

Appetite and Taste

Bitter taste of the food when it is swallowed.

Stomach and Abdomen

Eructations sour or empty, after dinner, followed by expectoration of frothy saliva. Nausea during pregnancy. Vomiturition, straining to vomit, in the morning ; vomiting in the morning of sweetish water, with dryness in the nose and fullness in the forehead ; cold hands and feet, with thirst. Tightness of the stomach and pit of the stomach ; the tight clothing is insupportable. Painful hard place on the left side of the stomach. Scirrhus or cancer of the stomach. Stitches in the region of the liver. Pressure in the region of the spleen ; the spot is painful to external pressure, especially when sitting down soon after rising from the bed in the morning. Sensation of contraction in the abdomen, as if a hard-twisted ball were lying in the umbilical region. Labor-like pain, with drawing in of the upper part of the abdomen, extending to the small of the back and pressing toward the lumbar vertebræ, with flushes of heat in the face, palpitation of the heart, ineffectual urging to pass urine, which is finally emitted in small quantities and hot ; after the paroxysm, chilliness and milky leucorrhœa. Sensation of soreness in the abdomen (when taking a deep inspiration). Painful sensation of coldness in the abdomen. Distention of the abdomen, as after a copious meal.

Stool and Anus

Constipation ; stool hard, dry, and only expelled with difficulty. Stitches in the rectum, extending towards the left groin.

Urinary Organs

Diminished secretion of urine ; also he drinks much, with frequent desire to micturate (at night), passing but little at a time. Frequent and profuse micturition (pale urine). Urine has a bad smell ; of the color of chestnuts, reddish, with red sediment. Before urinating, discharge of mild leucorrhœa. During micturition, burning between the labia.

Sexual Organs

Men. Burning in the genitals and impotence. Women. Itching in the vagina, inducing rubbing in the evening, succeeded by smarting, swelling, heat and induration of the external parts, with soreness in the vagina when urinating. On the neck of the uterus a hard lump, and ulcerative pain during an embrace ; the pain worse in the morning than in the evening. Prolapsus uteri. During an embrace burning in the parts, followed next day by menstrual discharge of dark blood. Menstruation too early and too profuse. Before and during menstruation, hardness of bearing. Leucorrhœa, mild, corrosive, debilitating. Appearance of the menses in the third mouth of pregnancy (blood black, flows in a stream).

Respiratory Organs

Scraping and roughness in the throat, with hoarseness, relieved by sneezing, in the morning. Cough (in the evening, in bed), caused by crawling below the larynx, with involuntary micturition. Dry, wheezing, hollow cough, caused by scraping and roughness and crawling in the chest, without expectoration. Cough, with expectoration of thick, yellow or white mucus. Aggravation of the cough morning and evening, while exhaling, from motion, from music, when awaking, when lying on the side, or when turning in bed. Cough, with pain in the chest and sternum, compelling to press the hand on it ; stitches and soreness in the chest. Pain in the back ; great sleepiness and profound sleep. Frequent desire to take a deep breath on account of a sensation of heaviness on the chest. Shortness of breath, with sensation of heaviness on the chest. The chest feels bruised, especially the sternum. Stitches in the chest above the heart, with oppression of breathing ; in the right side, extending under the shoulder-blade, arresting the breathing. Stitches in the heart.

Back

Pain, as if the small of the back would break ; worse at rest ; better from motion. Pain in the small of the back like labor-pains ; strong pressure to urinate, and ineffectual desire to go to stool. Pain in the back at night ; worse when lying. The scapulæ feel as if bruised.

Extremities

Upper. Pain in the shoulders as if they had ham uncovered all night. Stitches in the arm from the shoulder-joint through the fingers ; they feel as if gone to sleep, insensible. Deadness of the fingers, which grow pale and insensible (early in the morning, when rising), (with tingling and going to sleep). Pain in the left thumb, as if sprained or stiff. Lower. Humming and buzzing sensation in the lower limbs. Pain of the sales of the feet, as from subcutaneous ulceration. Œdematous, white swelling of both feet (feel cold and heavy). Burning itching of the soles.

Sleep

Great drowsiness, with frequent yawning. Sleeplessness (before midnight) ; tosses about all night without any apparent cause.

Generalities

Faintness (in the morning, when rising too early). Sensation of soreness, as if bruised. Restlessness in the body while reposing. Stitches in the joints.

Fever

Pulse small and weak ; when at rest, pulsation in all the arteries. Chilliness predominating while at rest. Chill, with flushes of the face ; red cheeks and icy cold feet. Chill, with great bodily restlessness. Heat, mostly in the face. Flushes of heat, with circumscribed redness of the cheeks. Perspiration only during the morning, with heat and redness of the cheeks.

Skin

Blotches like nettle-rash. Large, greasy-looking, pox-shaped pustules over the whole body. Herpes, furfuraceous and pustulous, dry, humid (on the backs of the hands and fingers, in the palms of the hands, on the ears, elbows, knuckles, and malleoli). Itching, very violent towards evening.

Conditions

Aggravation, in the open air ; on moving ; from eating cold food. Amelioration, from warmth.

Characteristics

Kreosote , a product of the distillation of pyroligneous acid and of tar, the preservative principle of the smoke, used for smoking meats and fish, was discovered by Reichenbach, a Moravian chemist, early in the nineteenth century. The second edition of his work, published in 1835, supplies many of our data, but independently Kre , has been well proved. Its name, derived from the Greek, means "flesh-preserver"; and Teste includes it with Arsen., Merc. cor., Plumb., Stan., Nit. ac., Sul. ac., Crocus , and Arg. met ., in his Merc. Sol . group. He remarks that several members of this group, whilst preserving dead organic matter from decomposition, have just the opposite effect on living tissues. The entire group have these characters: Suppressed or more frequently increased secretions with putridity. Foul breath . Bloating. Caries of teeth and bones. Cadaverous coldness. Predominant left-sidedness . Deep, nervous and mental derangement. Violent oscillation of symptoms-ravenous hunger to anorexia, &c. All favour the production of intestinal parasites and all are therefore anthelmintic. Excessive indulgence in smoked meats and fish is very injurious to the health. The principal observed effects are: Scorbutic condition of gums, falling out and decay of teeth, foul breath, costiveness, malaise. ( Salt , another great preservative, also produces scurvy.) Kermes, of Weinsberg, has collected 135 cases in which death has occurred apparently from eating smoked foods. The leading symptoms in all were: Burning pain at epigastrium, bloody vomiting, meteorism, violent colic with constipation, slow breathing, sinking of pulse and dilatation of pupils. (Teste.) Reichenbach not only discovered Kre ., he also introduced it into medical practice, and there was, as usual, a rush for the new remedy, which for a short time was a panacea; and then, except among homœopaths, fell into neglect. Teste observed that it acted particularly well on infants in the cradle, and congenital syphilis was a very strong indication for it. The marked action of Kre . on the teeth and dentition confirms this. [Cooper cured with Kre . 30 a case of auditory vertigo in a patient with pegged teeth. No other medicine would touch the case.] But it is also frequently called for in acquired syphilis, especially in the skin manifestations. Nash confirms the action on children and especially during dentition. The teeth decay almost as soon as they appear. Gums dark red or blue and very painful; incessant vomiting; cadaverous-smelling stools. The urinary symptoms are also marked, and Kre . is one of the most important remedies in enuresis. The chief urinary features are: ( 1 ) Copious pale urine. ( 2 ) Sudden; great urging; the patient cannot go quick enough. ( 3 ) The child wets the bed during the first sleep which is very profound. J. Meredith ("Agricola") proved on himself ( H. W ., xxviii. 84) "the first heavy distillate from hard green wood," obtained at charcoal works, in the 4x attenuation. The symptoms observed were so like those of pure Kre . that I do not think they need be separated. Among them were: Great thirst in evening. Enormous appetite. Stabbings here and there. Eyes feel as if in a woody smoke. Sneezing. Spleen pain. Nasal pus. [Teste emphasises a discharge "of fetid pus from nostrils."] At 7 a.m. sitting up in bed, pain and stiffness across hips and sacrum, which continued during the day. Prostate and bladder irritation , during night frequently rises to pass a very little urine, coming away like spray. It cured at the same time constipation of ten to twelve days' duration. Meredith cured with it a girl, æt. 17, of intense urethral scalding after urination ( H. W ., xxx. 83). Kre . is no less suited to women than it is to children; and especially to the leucophlegmatic temperament. Grauvogl cured with Kre . 3x a girl of 20 of suppression of menses, with a concomitant state of imbecility. (In another woman who had suppressed menses with tertian intermittent fever, the intermittent was cured with Chi. sul ., one grain four times a day, and then Grauvogl, hearing for the first time of the suppression of the menses, gave Kre . 3x, with the result that the fever returned in full force. Quinine was again given, and the fever again disappeared. Before the next period, as the patient was of the Nux type, that remedy was given and the period was re-established. According to Grauvogl Kre . has a short period of action, one or two days, Chi. sul . having two or three weeks; and he quotes the case to illustrate the law of incompatibility; in intermittents Chi . may be given after Kre ., but not Kre . after Chi .) Guernsey summarises the action of Kre . on women thus: " Lencorrhœa putrid , with accompanying complaints., leucorrhœa in general, especially if very fetid and exhausting. Female genitals in general. Complaints after menstruation; of females at change of life." According to the same authority Kre . affects especially the inner temples, external ears and lobe of the ear. It is suited to very severe old neuralgias with tearing pains sensations affecting upper jaw; upper teeth; inner navel region shoulder-blades. Dry-peeling lips are a characteristic: and Kre . has cured a tumour of lower lip, supposed to be epithelioma, with dry, cracked skin. In my own experience Kre . (3 and 30) meets a very large proportion of toothache cases where the teeth are decayed, especially if the gums are scorbutic. Its nearest rivals are Staphisagria with blackened teeth, and Mercurius with suppurating gumboil. The scapular pain is illustrated by a case of Lutze's. A lady had a pain under left scapula, < by motion, excruciatingly < by riding in a carriage; > by pressure, by lying with that shoulder on something hard, and by warmth. A long succession of homœopathic remedies was given in vain. Then the old school had a trial with Antipyrine and Morphia , with no better success. Long after, Lutze met the patient casually, and she mentioned that she had pains in the left thumb . This led him to Kre ., under which he found the other symptoms of the case. He asked the patient to let him give her one other dose. She consented. Kre . 200 was given and completely cured the patient, who had become nervous and worn out by the suffering she had endured ( J. of Homœopathics , May, 1890). In the same number of the same journal a case is recorded by Jean. I. Mackay in which Kre . 45m., twice repeated at long intervals, wrought a cure: Mrs. L., 28, fair, nervous. Has one child, æt. 9. Six years before Mackay saw her had an abortion and since then health had been failing. Her chief complaint was of hæmorrhage from the uterus, brought on by lifting, over-exertion, and always followed coitus . No pain during coitus. Menses regular but profuse and clotted. Constant dull aching pain in back. The day after the flow has a terrible left-sided headache > by hot water applied to head. Annoying itching in genitals at times. Os eroded, speculum soon filling with clotted blood. "Coitus followed by flow of blood the next day" is a keynote for Kre . W. P. Wesselhœft ( Hahn. Ad ., xxxviii. 23) confirms these symptoms: Coarse, red elevated acne pimples, especially in blonde women . Nocturnal enuresis from too profound sleep; child cannot be awakened when taken up. Giving out of knee-joint with annoying cracking (in a large, fat blonde woman ). Large purulent blisters on concha of both ears, with a red base, like small-pox pustules. Chronic headache accompanied with great drowsiness, during which the patient would sleep most of the time, and groan in his sleep. Relief was followed by the appearance of a great number of small warts on scalp. [Hering mentions these constitutions as suited to Kre : Dark complexion, slight, lean. Complexion livid, disposition sad, irritable. Old women. Torpid, leuco-phlegmatic temperament. Old-looking children, hard to awaken. Blondes.] The following case of coccygodynia was reported in Amer. Hom . Miss A. complains of unbearable burning pains in sacrum extending down to coccyx, with feeling there when sitting as if an electric battery were attached with needles which were pricking through the skin. > Rising from seat. Attended with milky leucorrhœa. Kre . cured in three days. James H. Freer ( N. A. J. H ., xliv. 489) cured a lady over 80 who suffered from incontinence of urine on the occurrence of a bronchial attack which compelled her to keep her bed. Villers has reported a case of incontinence < when lying down cured by Kre ., and this led Freer to the remedy, which rapidly cleared up the case, bronchitis and all. (In Villers' case Kre . 30 was given for "incontinence of urine when lying down" because he had cured with it many cases of uterine hæmorrhage occurring only in, or < by, the horizontal position. ─ H. R ., x. 24.) Freer also cured incontinence in a case of locomotor ataxy (man, 74) with Kre . 6. An allopathic authority, Vladimir de Holstein, of Paris ( Amer. Hom ., xxiv. 93), accidentally cured with 6-drop doses of Kre ., given in beer or milk, aggravated constipation in a chlorotic girl. He gave it with the sole idea of "disinfecting" the intestines. The vomiting of Kre . is noteworthy. The most characteristic form is that due to weakness of stomach, which cannot digest, and which rejects a meal undigested some hours after it was eaten. Vomiting of pregnancy, sweetish water with ptyalism; of cholera infantum; incessant vomiting with cadaverous stools; in malignant disease of stomach. Gentry has recorded the following: Lady, 45, on visiting a friend ill with dysentery, was struck with the odour, went home, commenced to vomit, and vomited all food or drink and continued, without ceasing, vomiting or retching for three weeks, being fed by the rectum all the time. She had to be held up by the nurse. She was greatly emaciated. Kre . 200, one dose given. In twenty minutes the retching ceased. The patient fell asleep, had no more vomiting, and rapidly recovered. Up to this time she had been under allopaths, who advised that homœopathy should be tried, as they could do no more. Harmar Smith ( H. W ., xxiii. 496) cured a girl of 10 of very frequent and violent eructation; she was apparently healthy in other respects. Bell . and Puls . did no good. Arg. n. aggravated. Kre . 2x at once did good and cured in a few days. A fatal case of poisoning with eighteen drops of Kre . has been recorded ( H. W ., xxix. 344) and brings out many of the symptoms in the cases above quoted. A woman, 52, was given for a pulmonary affection Kre . six drops in milk three times a day. After the third day she had: Dysphagia, gastric pain, vomiting, diarrhœa, and a distressing tendency to cough. On admission to hospital twenty-four hours later the breath smelt of Kre . Skin and mucous membranes pale; lips blue; dysphagia marked. Mucous membrane of mouth of a dull white colour in parts. Paralysis and anæsthesia of palate, paralysis of larynx, analgesia of left arm and part of left leg. Later, albumen and casts in urine. After four days, some stupor, and weakness more marked. Next day collapse and death. After death two large erosions were found on upper part of œsophagus and others about pylorus. Stomach red and congested. Kidneys acutely inflamed. Cloudy swelling of liver. ─ Burning pains are a marked feature of Kre . (lupus of nose with burning pains. Chronic pneumonia with pain like red-hot coals in chest); and stitches are even more characteristic. Itching is intense. Among the peculiar sensations are: As if a board was across forehead. As if brain would force through forehead. As if something floating before eyes. As if a hard twisted ball was lying in umbilical region. During defecation children struggle and scream and seem as if they would go into fits. Burning as of hot coals deep in pelvis. As if something coming out of vagina. As if a load was resting on pelvis. As if sternum being crushed in. As of a heavy burden on crest of ilium. As if small of back would break. As if scapulæ and other parts bruised. As if tendon of elbow-joint too short. As if small of back would break. As if hip dislocated. As if leg too long when standing. There is general sensitiveness to touch and contact. Marked periodicity is apparent. Intermittent fevers. Prostration and restlessness. Fretful, irritable, apprehensive. Music makes him weep. Weak-minded with suppressed menses. Sufferings from the non-appearance of menses ─ hence at change of life. The symptoms are < after menstruation; during leucorrhœa; when yawning. < In open air; cold weather; when growing cold; from cold washing or bathing. < At rest and especially when lying. Leucorrhœa is > sitting, < standing and walking. Cough compels sitting up all night. Touch < . Pressure > . General > from warmth. < By coitus and after coitus. Hoarseness is > by sneezing. Coughing = involuntary micturition. Drawing in limbs alternates with sufferings in the eyes.

Relations

Antidoted by: Acon. (vascular erethism), Nux (violent pulsations in every part of body); according to Teste, Fer. met. is the best antidote, especially for over-action of Kre. in lively, sanguine, and vigorous children. Incompatible: Carb. v.; also after Chi. Followed well by: Sul., Ars. (in malignant disease); Bell., Calc., K. ca., Lyc., Nit. ac., Rhus., Sep. Compare: Eupion and Kre., as might be expected, have many identical symptoms, notably hæmorrhages, pulsations, and menstrual disorders. Restlessness when seated, with shivering, and frequent want to draw a long breath, which, however, is impossible. ─ Music and other emotional causes impel him to weep. ─ Lachrymose humour, sometimes with moroseness or melancholy. ─ Continual excitement, with obstinacy, and disposition to be angry. ─ Ill-humour. ─ Mental dejection, and despair of being cured, towards evening. ─ Mild melancholy, with desire for death. ─ Easy loss of ideas. ─ Weakness of memory. ─ Frequent absence of mind, and a sort of stupidity.

Head

Vertigo, which causes falling, sometimes in morning in open air. ─ Headache, like that which results from intoxication. ─ Headache caused by mental emotions. ─ Headache with inclination to sleep, and drawing in eyelids, or redness of face, lassitude (esp. in legs), bitter taste, ill-humour, and tendency to shed tears. ─ Sensation of tension, of heaviness and of fulness in head, sometimes as if everything were going to protrude through forehead, < on stooping. ─ Sensation of a weight in occiput, as if the head were going to fall backwards. ─ Painful pressure and compression, esp. in the vertex, temples, and forehead (when awaking in morning), with heat in face. ─ Pulsative pain and throbbing in the head, esp. the forehead. ─ Drawing pains, acute pullings and shootings in the head, sometimes extending to the jaws and teeth. ─ The headaches sometimes commence on waking in morning. ─ Shootings in side of head, with loss of ideas. ─ Buzzing in head. ─ Soreness of scalp on being touched. ─ Falling off of hair. ─ Miliary pimples on forehead. ─ Pimples on forehead, like those seen in drunkards.

Eyes

Eyes red and moist, as after weeping. ─ Eyes dull and sunken. ─ Itching in eyes with soreness after scratching them, inflammatory redness of the sclerotica, and pressure as from sand. ─ Continual heat, and burning sensation in eyes, and frequent lachrymation, even on waking in morning, and esp. on beholding light of day. ─ Eyes constantly, as it were, bathed in tears. ─ Burning and corrosive tears. ─ The tears are like salt water. ─ Interstitial keratitis, with pegged teeth. ─ Nocturnal agglutination of eyelids. ─ Redness and swelling of eyelids, and their margins. ─ Furfuraceous tetter on eyelids. ─ Quivering of eyelids (uncontrollable). ─ Sight confused as when looking through a veil, or as if there were down before eyes. ─ Sensation as if something were floating before eyes, obliging one to wipe them constantly.

Ears

Heat and burning in ears. ─ Inflammatory swelling of the ear, with tensive, burning pains, or else with painful stiffness of neck, on side affected, with swelling of the cervical glands and livid grey complexion; pains extending to shoulders and arm, heat in forehead, and pressure above eyes. ─ Inflammation of (l.) outer ear, red, hot, swollen, burning, proceeding from a pimple in the concha, with stiffness and pain in l. side of neck, shoulder, and arm. ─ Pullings and shootings in ears, or cramp-like, pressive, and expansive pains. ─ Deafness, or aural vertigo, with signs of hereditary syphilis. ─ Buzzing in ears, with hardness of hearing, alternately with tingling and whistling in head. ─ Roaring in head; also humming and difficulty of hearing before and during menses. ─ Humid tetters on ears. ─ Itching in ears (and soles of feet).

Nose

Offensive and fetid smell before nose, sometimes with want of appetite. ─ Bad smell before nose (on waking). ─ Nose constantly moist. ─ Bleeding of nose, even in morning; blood bright red and thin, or thick and black. ─ Frequent sneezing, esp. in the morning. ─ Fluent coryza, with painful sensibility of the nasal fossæ, on breathing the air. ─ Coryza, with sensation of erosion under sternum. ─ Dry coryza, with frequent sneezing. ─ Chronic catarrh with old people.

Face

Frequent, and even constant heat in face (during siesta), sometimes with throbbing in cheeks and forehead, and with a deep red colour of whole face, frequent want to make water. ─ Acne. ─ Face pale green with swelling of cervical glands. ─ Greyish, earthy colour of the face. ─ Furfuraceous tetters on cheeks, on eyelids, and round mouth. ─ Acute drawing pain in r. side of face, from jaw to temple. ─ Dryness of lips (with peeling off), as if caused by internal heat. ─ Burning pains; < talking or exertion; > lying on unaffected side. ─ Pustulous pimples on chin and cheek, which are covered with yellowish scabs.

Teeth

Drawing pains and successive pullings in teeth, even on waking in morning, and sometimes with pains in diseased side of face, extending to temple. ─ Elongation of teeth. ─ Drawing, throbbing, jerking pains in teeth. ─ Bad odour from decayed teeth. ─ Teeth wedge-shaped (syphilitic deafness). ─ Dentition, great restlessness, wants to be constantly in motion, screaming all night. ─ Teeth show dark specks and begin to decay as soon as they appear. ─ After extraction, oozing of dark, slightly coagulated blood. ─ Inflammatory redness of gums (l. upper side). ─ Gums bluish red, soft; spongy. ─ Protruding gums infiltrated with dark watery fluid. ─ Gums bleed readily; scorbutic, spongy, and ulcerated. ─ Absorption of gums and alveolar processes.

Mouth

Putrid odour from mouth. ─ Anæsthesia and paralysis of palate. ─ Tongue pale and flabby, with an accumulation of thin saliva in mouth.

Throat

Continual dryness in throat, with burning and frequent thirst. ─ Scraping and roughness in throat with dryness and pain as of excoriation or pressure in throat on swallowing. ─ Painful sensation of choking at bottom of gullet, extending to chest and back. ─ Upper œsophagus eroded.

Appetite

Greedy drinking followed by vomiting; great thirst. ─ Keen appetite, esp. for meat; craves smoked meats. ─ Cold food < ; warm food > . ─ Dares not remain fasting ( < fasting). ─ Bitter taste, esp. in throat, and when swallowing food. ─ Water after it is swallowed tastes bitter. ─ Sickly taste in mouth. ─ Entire loss of appetite, sometimes with pale and flaccid tongue, accumulation of saliva in mouth, and burning thirst.

Stomach

Risings of flatus and sour regurgitations. ─ Frequent and violent eructations. ─ Nausea, with inclination to vomit, salivation, and shivering over whole body, or with a burning sensation in mouth. ─ Retching, esp. when fasting in morning, as during pregnancy, and sometimes with vomiting of water and of mucus, dryness of nose, heat and pressive pain in forehead, thirst, and coldness in hands and feet. ─ Vomiting of sweetish water, when fasting in morning. ─ Vomiting; with dreadful burning at chest. ─ Stomach weak, cannot digest, food is immediately rejected, or vomited undigested some hours after eating. ─ Oppression of stomach, and of epigastrium, which renders the pressure of clothing insupportable. ─ Hardness in epigastric region, with painful sensibility to touch. ─ Cancer of stomach. ─ Pulsation in region of stomach, extending to all the upper part of body, esp. when in motion.

Abdomen

Shooting and pressive pains in hepatic region. ─ Sensation of fulness, and pain as from contusion, in liver. ─ Pressure in region of spleen; the spot is painful to external pressure, esp. when sitting down soon after rising from bed in morning. ─ Pain, as from ulceration, in abdomen, when breathing and moving; the pains sometimes hinder sleep during night. ─ Painful sensation of coldness in abdomen, with too scanty emission of urine. ─ Inflation and tension of abdomen (as after a copious meal), sometimes with shortness of breath. ─ Contractive pain in abdomen, even at night, towards morning, with a sensation as if there were a hard compact mass in umbilical region. ─ Shootings in abdomen, sometimes extending to sexual parts. ─ Colic, resembling labour pains, sometimes with frequent want to make water (which is finally emitted in small quantities and hot), ill-humour and irascibility, shiverings after the attack, and sometimes also a milky discharge from the vagina. ─ (Obstinate flatus in old abdominal disease.)

Stool and Anus

Stools: watery; papescent; dark brown; watery, putrid, containing undigested food; greyish or white; chipped, very fetid; frequent, greenish, watery; cadaverous-smelling. ─ Ineffectual painful urging. ─ Children struggle and scream during act of defecation, and scream as if they would go into fits. ─ Evacuations hard, dry, difficult, and only every third or fourth day. ─ Several evacuations daily. ─ Pulling, acute drawing pains, and cramp-like pains in rectum (towards the l. groin).

Urinary Organs

Diminished or excessively increased secretion of urine (also, he drinks much, with frequent desire to micturate, passing but little at a time). ─ Frequent and urgent want to make water, even at night. ─ (Relieves thirst in diabetes.). ─ Frequent urging with copious pale discharge; at night cannot get out of bed quick enough. ─ Wets bed at night; dreams he is urinating properly. ─ Urine spurts from her during each cough. ─ Can only urinate when lying. ─ Incontinence < lying down. ─ Urine of a chestnut colour, or turbid. ─ Urine fetid and colourless. ─ Reddish, or whitish sediment in the urine. ─ Burning corrosive urine. ─ Before urinating, discharge of bland leucorrhœa. ─ During micturition, burning between the labia.

Male Sexual Organs

Burning in genitals (during coition) and impotence. ─ Prepuce bluish black with hæmorrhages and gangrene.

Female Sexual Organs

Premature catamenia, of too long continuance, and too copious, with a discharge of black blood. ─ During an embrace, burning in the parts, followed next day by menstrual discharge of dark blood. ─ Appearance of menses in third month of pregnancy (blood black, flows in a stream). ─ Before the catamenia, abdominal spasms, leucorrhœa, irritation, and inquietude, vomiting of mucus or frothy risings, and inflation of the abdomen. ─ During menses: Hardness of hearing; discharge of fetid wind, constipation, and incarceration of flatus; buzzing and roaring in head; with pressive pains, colic, cuttings, sacral pains, constant shivering, or sweat on the back, and on the chest. ─ After menses: Abdominal spasms; pressure in the genitals; leucorrhœa; and many other sufferings. ─ Pains during menses, but < after. ─ Menses flow only when lying down; cease on sitting. or walking about. ─ Metrorrhagia < lying, > getting up and walking about. ─ Metrorrhagia; in fungoid disease of endometrium. ─ Leucorrhœa, corrosive or mild, and sometimes followed by exhaustion and fatigue, esp. in legs. ─ Leucorrhœa of a yellow colour, staining linen yellow, with great weakness in legs. ─ White leucorrhœa, having odour of green corn. ─ Nausea during pregnancy; ptyalism; excoriating lochia. ─ Dwindling away of mammæ, with small, hard, painful lumps in them. ─ Leucorrhœa putrid, with accompanying complaints; leucorrhœa in general, esp. if very fetid and exhausting. ─ Complaints of females at change of life. ─ Cramp-like pains in external genitals. ─ Excoriation, with smarting pains between genitals and thighs. ─ Shootings in vagina, as if produced by electricity. ─ Voluptuous itching in vagina. ─ Itching in vagina, inducing rubbing in evening, succeeded by smarting, swelling, heat, and induration of external parts, with soreness in vagina when urinating. ─ Desire for coition, in females, esp. in morning. ─ After coition, pain, as of excoriation, and hard knottiness in neck of uterus, or swelling of the genital parts (both male and female) with burning pains (worse in morning than in evening). ─ After coition discharge of dark blood the next day. ─ Prolapsus vaginæ. ─ Prolapsus uteri. ─ Pulling, stitches, and shootings in the mammary glands.

Respiratory Organs

Scraping and roughness in throat, with roughness and hoarseness of voice ( > by sneezing in morning). ─ Paralysis of palate. ─ Dry cough, excited by a scraping in throat, or by a tickling in bronchia. ─ Dry, wheezing cough. ─ Cough, with shortness of breath. ─ Cough in evening, in bed, caused by crawling below larynx, with involuntary micturition. ─ Constant cough, with sleep and shiverings, followed by dry heat. ─ Convulsive cough, with retching, esp. in morning. ─ Continual hoarse and hollow cough, excited by an accumulation of mucus in throat, with easy expectoration of whitish, or of yellowish and thick mucus. ─ Cough, with pain in chest and sternum, compelling to press the hand on it; stitches and soreness in chest. ─ The mucus which is expectorated has sometimes a sweetish taste. ─ Involuntary emission of urine, and concussion in abdomen on coughing.

Chest

Shortness of breath, sometimes with a sensation of heaviness in chest, and desire to make a deep inspiration, or with pain, as of a bruise, in chest (esp. sternum), when breathing. ─ Difficult and anxious respiration. ─ Frequent blood-spitting; afternoon fever and morning sweat. ─ Violent shootings in chest, in region of heart, in ribs, and in intercostal muscles, sometimes when breathing, or with suspended respiration; these shootings manifest themselves also at night. ─ Burning pain in chest, as after drinking brandy; the pain extends from centre of chest to throat and tongue, and is accompanied by heat, redness, and tension in face. ─ Terrible burning at chest, as from hot coals. Stitches in chest above heart, with oppression of breathing; in r. side, extending under scapula, arresting breathing.

Heart

Stitches in heart. ─ Pulsation in all arteries when at rest.

Neck and Back

Glands of neck swollen. ─ Pain in back; great sleepiness and profound sleep. ─ Pain as if small of back would break; < at rest; > from motion. ─ Pain in back at night; < when lying. ─ Scapulæ feel as if bruised. ─ Pain under (l.) shoulder-blade; > hard pressure and by warmth; < riding in carriage and by any motion. ─ Pains in small of back, like spasmodic pains of labour, with urgent want to make water, and to evacuate, or with leucorrhœa. ─ Pains, as of ulceration, in the lumbar vertebræ. ─ Nocturnal pains in back, more violent during repose. ─ Continuous burning in small of back. ─ Drawing pain along coccyx to rectum and vagina, where a spasmodic, contractive pain is felt.

Skin

Soft, unnatural feel of skin, with pegged teeth. ─ Violent itching all over body, esp. towards evening, and with burning sensation in arms and legs, after scratching. ─ Burning itching at night, and heat over whole body. ─ Nettle-rash. ─ Eruption, like bug-bites, with violent itching esp. in evening. ─ Large, greasy-looking, pox-shaped pustules over whole body. ─ Mealy and pustular, dry or humid tetters (on backs of hands and fingers, in palms, on ears, elbows, knuckles, and malleoli), with violent itching in almost every part of body.

Sleep

Great inclination to sleep, with frequent yawnings; sometimes with putrid taste in mouth, and want of appetite. ─ Fits of yawning, with shivering, weeping, pressive pains in forehead, or lassitude. ─ Constant inclination to sleep. ─ Difficulty in going to sleep, caused by restlessness over whole body, or a sensation of fatigue, with pains in all limbs. ─ Disturbed sleep, with tossing. ─ Frequent waking during night. ─ Unrefreshing sleep, with paralytic sensation in all limbs on waking. ─ At night, pains in loins, internal shiverings, pulsations in head, restlessness over whole body, pressive and burning pains in eyes, agglutination of the lids, &c. ─ Starting from sleep in a fright. ─ Frequent, anxious dreams; dreams of snow, of falling, pursuits, poisoning, emaciation, fire, of erections and of wanting to make water, of foul and disgusting linen, &c.

Fever

Suggilation on conjunctiva of right eye.
Burning and redness of conjunctiva.

Smell and nose

Subjective putrid smell with loss of appetite ; in morning, on awaking.

Frequent sneezing : especially in morning ; with stoppage of nose ; rough and scraping sensation in throat ; with dry, nasal catarrh.
Nasal secretion thick.

Upper face

Sick, suffering expression ; old looking children.
Complexion : wretched ; earthy ; livid ; pale, green, with swelling of cervical glands ; pale, bloated ; coppery appearance.

Face cold, of pale, bluish tinge, especially on temples and around nose and mouth.
Flushes of heat, with circumscribed redness of cheeks.

Great heat and brown redness of face (during siesta), with throbbing in cheeks and forehead, and frequent micturition.
Scaly herpes on eyelids, cheeks and around mouth.
Acne in face.

Lower face

Dry lips, peeling off, easily cracked.
Wants to moisten lips frequently, without being thirsty.
Tumor, size of a pea, on lower lip, with acrid, watery ichor, making surrounding parts sore.
Eruption on under lip.
Pustulous pimples, with yellow scabs on chin and cheek.

Teeth and gums

Bad odor from decayed teeth.
Toothache : extending to temples and to left side of face ; drawing, extending to inner ear and temples ; caused by caries.
Teeth wedge shaped. θ Syphilitic deafness.
Great restlessness, wants to be in motion all the time, and screams whole night. θ Dentition.
Teeth show dark specks and begin to decay as soon as they appear.
Gums : bluish red, soft, spongy, easily bleeding, inflamed, ulcerated, scorbutic.
Protruding gums infiltrated with dark watery fluid.
After extraction of tooth, persistent oozing of dark, slightly coagulated blood, finally checked by application of alum ; hemorrhage reappeared at shorter or longer intervals, at first only from teeth, later entirely from nose, continuing one year, and causing great debility.
Absorption of gums and alveolar process.

Taste, speech, tongue

Bitter or flat taste.
Bitter taste, especially in throat.
Everything eaten tastes bitter ; bitter taste of food, not perceived until just as it is being swallowed.
Tongue dry ; with mucous coating ; coated white.

Inner mouth

Putrid odor from mouth.

Palate and throat

Pressure on right side of throat when swallowing.
Scraping in throat, with roughness and dryness.
Small, round, bluish red spots (petechiæ) on throat.
Diphtheria ; malignant form, when confined to fauces, with terrible fetor oris.
Fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, restless sleep, general languor, swelling of glands ; three days later, suddenly, very much exudate in fauces ; fetor oris. θ Diphtheria.
Scrofulous and lymphatic patients, with black softening and decomposition of mucous membrane, with atony and extension of softening, especially towards œsophagus. θ Diphtheria.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Greedy drinking followed by vomiting ; great thirst.
Keen appetite, especially for meat ; craves smoked meats.
Loss of appetite, aversion to meat, vomits after it.
Desire for spirituous drinks, weakening leucorrhœa.
Stomach aches, from acid food.

Eating and drinking

Water, after it is swallowed, tastes bitter.
Worse from eating cold food ; > from warm diet.
Dares not remain fasting.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Belching and hiccough, especially when sitting up or being carried.
Belching : sour ; empty ; after dinner, with throwing off of frothy saliva, and with scraping roughness in throat.
Deep and lasting disgust for food in convalescents.
Nausea : during pregnancy ; constant inclination to vomit without doing so ; with chilliness morning and evening.
Vomiting : of sweetish water ; of undigested food ; in evening of all food eaten during day ; of undigested food two or three hours after eating ; with dimness of vision ; of everything eaten ; of large quantities of sour,
acrid fluid, or of white, foamy mucus.
Continuous vomiting and straining to vomit.
Sympathetic vomiting, as of phthisis, of cancer of liver or uterus, of pregnancy, and of chronic kidney disease.
Seasickness.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Cold feeling at epigastrium internally, as if cold water or ice was there.
Feeling of fulness, as after having eaten too much.
Tension over stomach and scrobiculum ; tight clothing is intolerable.
Painful hard spot, at or to left of stomach.
Malignant induration, fungus and ulcers of stomach ; painless gastromalacia ; pressing, gnawing, ulcerative pain in stomach, with hematemesis.
Gastromalacia, preceded by great restlessness and sleeplessness, and accompanied by vomiting and diarrhœa.

Hypochondria

Bruised pain in region of liver, with sensation of fulness.
Constriction of hypochondria, cannot tolerate tight clothing.
Pressure in region of spleen ; spleen painful to pressure.

Abdomen and loins

Ulcerative pain in abdomen.
Pain in region of umbilicus.
Sensation of contraction in abdomen, as if a hard twisted ball was lying in umbilical region.
Distension of abdomen, as after a copious meal.
Abdomen distended and tense, like a drum.
Burning in bowels.
Labor-like pains in abdomen, with drawing in upper abdomen, extending to small of back and pressing toward lumbar vertebræ, with flushes of heat in face, palpitation of heart, frequent pulse and ineffectual urging to urinate, finally small quantities of hot urine are passed ; after
paroxysm chill, and discharge of milky leucorrhœa.
Sore pain in abdomen during deep inhalation.
Shattering sensation in abdomen.
Painful sensation of coldness in abdomen ; icy coldness in epigastrium. θ Dyspepsia.
Violent abdominal spasms, < in groins.
Colic, resembling pains of labor.
Tabes mesenterica, with hypertrophied glands in fleshy, flabby subjects.

Stools and rectum

Stools ; watery ; papescent ; dark brown ; watery, putrid, containing undigested food ; greyish or white, chopped, very fetid ; frequent, greenish, watery ; cadaverous smelling.
Ineffectual painful urging to stool.
Constipation, stool hard, expelled after much pressing.
Cramplike pain in rectum during stool.
Children struggle and scream during act of defecation, and seem as if they would go into fits.
Diarrhœa in nursing infants during dentition.
Diarrhœa, with vomiting ; continued vomiting, straining to vomit predominates ; child resists tightening of anything around abdomen, which increases restlessness and pain ; much thirst ; gums hot ; coldness of hands and feet.
Cholera infantum, second and third stages, with bloody, shreddy, mucous evacuations, with or without oppressiveness, gagging, dull, leaden countenance, somnolence ; incipient hydrocephaloid.
Constant vomiting and greedy drinking ; belching or hiccoughing when carried. θ Cholera infantum.
Much blood, often in clots, in diarrheic, thin, fetid stools, which are always followed by great prostration. θ Typhus.
Stitches in rectum, extending towards left groin.
Constriction of rectum in case of uterine cancer.

Urinary organs

Frequent urgency to urinate, with copious, pale discharge ; at night cannot get out of bed quick enough.
Diminished secretion, though drinking much.
Urine : chestnut brown ; clouded ; reddish, with red sediment ; depositing white sediment ; colorless ; fetid ; alkaline.
Wets bed at night, wakes with urging, but cannot retain urine, or dreams he is urinating in a decent manner.
Urine flows during deep, first sleep, from which child is roused with difficulty. θ Enuresis nocturna.
Chronic enuresis ; patient thin, emaciated.
Smarting and burning in pudenda during and after micturition.
Diabetes mellitus.

Male sexual organs

Sexual desire too weak.
Burning in genitals, during coition, with swelling of penis next day.
Prepuce bluish black with hemorrhage and gangrene. θ Syphilis.

Female sexual organs

After chill menses suppressed for six months ; unable to lie on either side ; dull pain in region of ovaries, could not bear strong pressure ; morning urine colorless ; brownish yellow, acrid leucorrhœa ; constipation. θ Chronic

During coition, burning in parts, followed next day by discharge of dark blood.
Hard lump on neck of uterus ; ulcerative pain during coition.

Uterine affections of middle aged women ; long lasting leucorrhœa, or frequently recurring uterine hemorrhages, both accompanied by pressing sensations ; finally discharges become offensive, bloody and watery, acrid, ichorous or clotted ;
burning, occasionally stitching in back and lower abdomen ; on standing sensation as if a load was resting in pelvis ; coition painful ; general aggravation during menstruation ; examination painful ; vagina hot, mucous membrane puffed and follicles often
hypertrophied ; at mouth of uterus warty or cauliflower excrescences.
Cancer of uterus (much improved).

Metrorrhagia : blood dark and offensive ; in large clots ; fainting ; pulseless.

Discharge from vagina frequently looks quite white, and then had odor of green corn.
Bland, yellow leucorrhœa, preceding each urination, with frequent desire to micturate.
Drawing pains along coccyx down to rectum and vagina, where a spasmodic, contractive pain is felt ; > when rising from sitting ; subsequent milky leucorrhœa.
Sterile from leucorrhœa.
Electric-like stitches in vagina, seem to come from abdomen, always make her start.
Voluptuous itching deep in vagina.
Violent itching of vagina, so that she is obliged to rub it ; posteriorly there is smarting ; external genitals swollen, hot and hard ; on urinating, vagina pains as if sore ; in evening.
Corrosive itching in vulva ; sore and burning after scratching.
Scirrhus of vagina, painful to slight touch.
Burning and swelling of labia.
Violent itching between labia and thighs.
Aphthous or inflammatory state of external parts, symptomatic of ovarian or uterine disease.

Pregnancy. parturition. lactation

During pregnancy ; nausea and vomiting ; ptyalism ; vomiting of sweetish water before breakfast ; vomiting after supper ; metrorrhagia threatening abortion (third month) ; leucorrhœa ; tightness across pit of stomach.
Lochia : blackish, lumpy, very offensive ; excoriating ; almost ceasing, freshen up again, persistent, brown and offensive.
Chill, then general heat, finally sweat ; pulse soft and quick ; trembling, anxiety, confusion of mind, weakness of memory, thinks herself well ; lochia dark, lumpy and very offensive ; vagina moist, not very hot ; abdomen soft and

Mamma : stitches ; dwindling away ; small, hard, painful lumps in them ; hard, bluish red and covered with little scurfy protuberances, from which blood oozes whenever scurf is removed.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Scraping and roughness in throat ; hoarseness, ceasing in morning, after sneezing.
Perichondritis of larynx, septic form, with softening and degeneration affecting mucous membrane of larynx, and particularly that of œsophagus.

Bronchial irritation accompanying dentition ; child extremely fretful, irritable, much agitated, and screaming in night.
Chronic bronchial and laryngeal catarrh, with hoarseness ; hawking mucus from trachea and bronchi, sometimes bloody, especially that from trachea ; heavy pressure on sternum when turning over in bed in morning ; < on approach of warm weather ; no cough.

Respiration

Shortness of breath, heaviness, anxiety, frequent desire to take a deep breath ; chest feels bruised, as if beaten ; as if sternum was being crushed in. θ Nervous

Cough

Cough : whistling ; dry ; tormenting ; evening, in bed ; caused by crawling below larynx, or, as if in upper bronchi ; with dyspnœa ; convulsive, with desire to vomit ; dry, spasmodic, in morning, causing retching ; concussion of
abdomen and escape of urine ; with easily detached white expectoration ; scraping, with profuse, thick, yellow, or white mucous expectoration ; dry, wheezing, hollow ; during dentition ; with pain in chest and sternum, compelling to press hand on it ; stitches

Coughing spells every Autumn and Spring, with expectoration of yellowish green pus and blood, fever and inability to lie on one side. θ Phthisis.
After whooping cough, accompanied by inflammatory affection of lungs and larynx, phthisis purulenta ; with every paroxysm of cough, expectoration of a large mass of pus, followed by such great prostration that he can hardly speak ; severe evening exacerbations ; loss of

Heart, pulse and circulation

Anxiety at heart ; oppression of breathing.
Stitches : over heart : in heart.
Pulsation in all arteries, when at rest.
Pulse : small, weak and quick ; soft, quick and trembling ; small and hard ; slow ; rapid, scarcely perceptible ; falls from eighty to sixty, even to forty-seven.
Pulse small and weak, with orgasm of blood.

Neck and back

Glands of neck swollen.
Pain in back : at night ; < when lying.
Pain as if small of back would break ; < during rest, > from motion.
Pain in small of back and sacral region, like labor pains ; urging to urinate and ineffectual desire for stool.
Spasmodic drawing from behind forward, into genitals, or down into thighs ; stitches. θ Cancer uteri.
Drawing pain along coccyx to rectum and vagina, where a spasmodic, contractive pain is felt.
Continuous burning in small of back.

Upper limbs

Pain in shoulders as if they had been uncovered all night.
Scapulæ as if bruised.
Stitches in arm, from shoulder joint through to fingers, which feel as if asleep, without power or feeling.
Pain as if bruised when touched inner side of upper arm.
Pain in elbow joint, as if tendons were too short.
Slightly elevated red blotches on left forearm.
Pain in ulnar muscles, extending to little finger ; cramplike in left arm ; drawing, with lameness in right.
Fingers become white and insensible, especially in morning after rising.
Left thumb pains as if sprained and stiff.
Cracking of skin of hands.

Lower limbs

Bruised pain on crest of ilium, as if from a heavy burden, or after running ; stitches from same through abdomen ; pain in same and in lumbar vertebræ, in morning, as if tired.
Pain in left hip joint, as if luxated ; as if leg was too long when standing.
Boring pain in right hip, alternating with numbness and loss of sensation of whole thigh. θ Rheumatic gout.
Tingling or buzzing sensation in lower limbs.
Pain in whole leg, as from an ulcer.
Sensation as if knee joint would suddenly give way.
Alternate swelling of knee joints and wrists, with sensation of numbness and rigidity of limbs.
Swelling and stiffness of feet ; white, cold swelling.
Stitches in right ankle and left heel.
Ulcerative pain in soles ; burning itching in soles.

Limbs in general

Alternate swelling of knees and joints of hands, with disagreeable sensation of numbness and stiffness in limbs. θ Rheumatic gout.
Pain in all limbs, as if beaten, or as after a long walk ; lassitude or heaviness with drowsiness.
Stitches in joints.
Red, scaly skin on bends of knees, like herpes.
Skin on extremities dry and rough.

Sleep

Great drowsiness, with frequent yawning.
Sleeplessness, < before midnight.
Will only sleep when caressed and fondled.
Tosses about all night, without any apparent cause.
Starting, when scarcely fallen asleep.
Laughs aloud during sleep.
Dreams : of crying ; of falling from a height ; of being out in a snow storm ; of being poisoned ; of bright fire ; of very dirty (clothes) wash ; that he is urinating, and awakes to find the dream a reality.

Touch : scalp sensitive ; orifice of uterus painful ; fundus of uterus painful like a blood boil ; cervix scirrhus very painful ; on inner side of upper arm, pain.
Pressure : region of spleen sensitive, in region of ovaries unbearable ; of hand > pain in chest and sternum.
Rubbing : smarting in eyes < ; hot, acrid tears.
Tight clothing is intolerable : constriction of hypochondria.

Skin

Itching ; toward evening so violent as to drive one almost wild.
Wheals like urticaria.
Sensation in skin as from ulceration, especially on face and chin.
Eruption of nodosities and blisters like bug bites.
Eruption dry as well as moist, in almost all parts of body, especially on backs of hands and feet, in palms, in ears, in popliteal region, and on knuckles of hands, with much itching.
Large, greasy looking, pock-shaped pustules, over whole body ; skin tense, shining, deep red ; greasy moisture.
Painless, pustular eruption all over body, especially on chin and cheeks ; sticking pain.
Watery or sero-purulent herpes, on back of hands and fingers and joints, itching violently towards evening.
Herpes in palms of hands, in ears, elbows, knuckles and malleoli, < evenings and in open air, > from warmth.
Old ulcers, painful, putrid.

Characteristics

There are three things that stand out most prominently in Kreosotum, and when they appear together the symptoms in minor degree will be likely to be associated.

These three characteristics are:

When these three things arc associated in a high degree Kreosote should be examined. A prick of a pin will cause the oozing of bright red- blood, and mucous membranes bleed easily. Any pressure upon the mucous membranes will cause oozing.

Bleeding here and there about the body. The lachrymation is excoriating. It excoriates the margins of the lids and checks, and they become red and raw, and smart. If there is a purulent discharge it is acrid. The corners of the lips and mouth are red and raw, and' the saliva burns and smarts. The moisture about the mouth, whatever it may be, excoriates and the mouth is raw. The eyes smart and burn as if raw.

The leucorrhoea causes smarting and burning about the vulva, so that the mucous surfaces of the labia are red and raw, sometimes inflamed, but always burning. The vagina burns during coition, and there is bleeding after coition; granulations of the vagina and os uteri, so that the pressure of the act of coition brings on bleeding and burning, smarting and excoriation. And the male organ will smart and burn after coming in contact with the secretion of the vagina during coition.

The urine burns and smarts. This tendency to excoriation from the excretions and secretions applies to all the tissues of the body.

Every emotion and exciting circumstance is attended with throbbing all over the body, pulsations to the ends of the fingers. Every emotion is attended with tearfulness, Music that will in the slightest way excite the emotion, minor strains and music that strikes home to the heart, pathetic music, will bring out tears that are acrid, and palpitation and pulsations that are felt to the extremities.

When the Kreosote sore throat is present the least pressure of the tongue depressor will establish oozing, little drops of blood will appear. During the coryza there is nosebleed. When the eyes are red and raw and inflamed, they will bleed easily. If an individual pricks the finger the blood will not merely be a single drop, but a good many will flow. Prolonged haemorrhage from the passages; hemorrhage from the kidneys, from the eyes, the nose, the uterus. Haemorrhage after coition. Tumors bleed easily.

These are the most marked features of Kreosote. If these are fixed in your mind, we have what may be known, as a Kreosote constitution out of which may come all the rest of the symptoms in all their minutiae, and little symptoms and fragments in every organ. You have in this one group the strong features of Kreosote. No matter how many particulars you may have in a case, if you do not have something of these general features you need not expect to find your patient constitutionally cured or relieved by Kreosote. These may be considered essentials.

Mentally the patient is so irritable that there is nothing that will suit him. The wants are so numerous that nothing satisfies. The patient wants everything and is satisfied with nothing, that is, he wants something and when he has it he does not want it. That is the state of irritability and lack of satisfaction in a chronic condition.

You see the child in the mother's arms. It wants a toy, and when given it throws it in the face of somebody; it wants this and that and is never satisfied, always wanting something new, a new toy which it throws away the moment it gets it and then calls for something else.

The lips are red and bleeding, the corners of the month are raw, the eyelids red and the skin excoriated. If it has, in connection with all this, loose passages from the bowels and you examine the fissure between the nates, you will find it is red and raw. If the child be old enough to make such motions he will put the hands upon the sore genitals and fissures and cry out in a most irritable way, because of the smarting.

Such is the Kreosote baby. It may be suffering from cholera infantum; it may be subject to wetting the bed; it may have spells of vomiting, in which it vomits all its food; it is a Kreosote baby.

Kreosote has attacks of diarrhoea and vomiting; all sorts of disturbances of the urine; great distension and trouble with the bowels; abdomen distended from flatus. You look over the whole case at once as a Kreosote case, because of these general features that can be summed up in the aspect of the child.

The Kreosote face has a yellowish pallor; it is a sickly countenance, semi-cachectic, intermingled with blotches that are reddish looking, as if erysipelas were going to set in. In olden times this countenance was called a scorbutic countenance.

Take a woman with this kind of countenance; at every menstrual flow she complains of much swelling and rawness of the genitals; the flow is copious, clotted, stops and then starts again, comes too soon and lasts too long; at times it is black, very foetid, produces rawness upon the thighs and the genitals, with much swelling; at every menstrual period there is rawness of the lips and fissures in the corners of the mouth; the tears become acrid; at the menstrual period all the fluids of the body seem to be acid and they burn wherever they touch.

Very often there is a loose stool, which is also acrid and smarts the anus at the menstrual period. All the symptoms are worse at the menstrual period, sometimes in the early part, sometimes at the middle, sometimes all through, and sometimes at the close. Something more about the scorbutic constitution is brought out in relation to the gums; the gums become puffed and red and tumid and settle away from the teeth.

They become spongy and bleed easily. In the mouth there is much ulceration and little ulcers spread from aphthous patches, smarting and burning; the tongue has ulcers upon it, which bleed easily upon touch.

At the close of a typhoid fever haemorrhage from the bowels, bleeding from the mucous membranes. The mouth becomes raw, and wherever there is a mucous membrane there is a rawness, and the fluids that ooze continue to, eat and cause ulceration. If at the close of a typhoid fever, when the time comes for convalescence, vomiting comes.

Vomiting, bleedings, diarrheas. The fluids vomited from, the stomach are so acrid that they seem to take the skin off from the mouth, set the teeth on edge, make the lips raw. So excoriation from acrid fluids, as well as throbbing all over the body, are features that you must bear in mind with Kreosote.

The discharges from the body are offensive; offensive, bloody, acrid discharges from the nose; offensive, watery discharges from any part of the body; sometimes even putrid; the leucorrhea is very offensive. Rapid emaciation, with spongy, burning ulceration, pus acrid, ichorous, foetid and yellow. Sometimes the inflammatory condition will run so high in an ulcer, only a small ulceration, that gangrene will set in, and hence we have a gangrenous ulceration; gangrene of parts that are inflamed.

Very low formations occur upon the margins of mucous membranes; crusts form. Indurations under the crusts and the crusts continue to form.

The circulation is so poor, so feeble in the parts all about the margin of the lips and the corners of the mouth, and corners of the eyes, and eyelids, and upon the genitals, and there is so much venous engorgement that crusts form and ulcerate and bleed and pile up, and this continues until a phagedenic spot comes. This condition is so much like epithelioma that Kreosote has cured epithelioma.

Stomach

The next striking thing in Kreosote is its stomach symptoms, Soon after eating there comes a burning pain in the stomach, and then a sense of fullness and an increasing nausea, ending in vomiting of the food, which looks as it did when taken; it looks undigested, but it is sour and acrid, coming up an hour or two after eating. Vomiting, the stomach seems unable to digest, and after the patient empties it there is constant nausea. After a swallow of water a prolonged bitter taste remains in the mouth.

There is aggravation from eating cold things and relief from warm diet. In malignant diseases of the stomach when this symptom is present, Kreosote becomes a great palliative; it relieves the burning and improves the digestion for a while, but the trouble comes again. Many times our remedies furnish us the greatest known palliation in cancerous affections. Homoeopathy should at all times furnish a degree of palliation in cancerous and other incurable malignant diseases of the stomach.

This palliation will bring more comfort to the stomach than can possibly be brought about by Mor phine . I have watched patients under Morphine and under homeopathic medicine, and as a mere matter of comfort I will take the homoeopathic medicines.

This has been the experience of many. When you hear a homoeopath say that he prefers anodynes in cancerous affections of the stomach and in other painful affections, it is pretty sure evidence that he is not able to find the medicines that are suitable for the patient. These cases test the ability of the physician.

Diarrhea

Kreosote is a great remedy for diarrheas in the summer, especially for infants. The infant that I described as to his temper may be the infant suffering from the worst form of summer complaint, or having a light attack of cholera infantum. Or he may be "teething," and suffering from the troubles that are sometimes associated with teething. Infants have troubles at the time of teething only because they are sick, and if the child were not in disorder he would not have trouble when teething. Teething is a crisis, and the things that are within will come out at the time, just as there are troubles that are likely to come out at the time of puberty and at the climacteric period.

A marked feature of the Kreosote constitution is that when the desire to urinate comes, he must hurry or the urine will escape. The urine is passed during sleep. Bloody urine; clots in the urine; acrid and excoriating urine; weakness of the bladder; inability to hold the urine.

Smarting and burning in the pudenda, during and after micturition.
