Common name

Cloride of Potassium-KCl (KALI MURIATICUM)

General

Although not proven, this remedy has a wide clinical use, through its introduction by Schuessler. It certainly is of great value in catarrhal affections, in sub-acute inflammatory states, fibrinous exudations, and glandular swellings. White or gray coating of base of tongue, and expectoration of thick, white phlegm, seem to be special guiding symptoms. Bursitis præpatellaris.

Head

Imagines he must starve. Headache, with vomiting. Crusta lactea. Dandruff.

Eyes

White mucus, purulent scabs. Superficial ulcer. Trachoma. Corneal opacities.

Ears

Chronic, catarrhal conditions of the middle ear. Glands about the ear swollen. Snapping and noises in the ear. Threatened mastoid. Great effusion about the auricle.

Nose

Catarrh; phlegm white, thick. Vault of pharynx covered with adherent crusts. Stuffy cold. Nosebleed (Arn; Bry).

Face

Cheek swollen and painful.

Mouth

Aphthæ; thrush; white ulcers in mouth. Swollen glands about jaw and neck. Coating of tongue grayish-white, dryish, or slimy.

Throat

Follicular tonsillitis. Tonsils inflamed; enlarged so much, can hardly breathe. Grayish patches or spots in the throat and tonsils. Adherent crusts in vault of pharynx. "Hospital" sore throat. Eustachian catarrh.

Stomach

Fatty or rich food causes indigestion. Vomiting of white, opaque mucus; water gathers in the mouth. Pain in the stomach, with constipation. Bulimia; hunger disappears by drinking water.

Abdomen

Abdominal tenderness and swelling. Flatulence. Thread-worms, causing itching at the anus.

Stool

Constipation; light-colored stools. Diarrhœa, after fatty food; clay-colored, white, or slimy stools. Dysentery; purging, with slimy stools. Hæmorrhoids; bleeding; blood dark and thick; fibrinous, clotted.

Female

Menstruation too late or suppressed, checked or too early; excessive discharge; dark-clotted, or tough, black blood, like tar (Plat). Leucorrhœa; discharge of milky-white mucus, thick, non-irritating, bland. Morning sickness, with vomiting of white phlegm. Bunches in breast feel quite soft and are tender.

Respiratory Organs

Loss of voice; hoarseness. Asthma, with gastric derangements; mucus white and hard to cough up. Loud, noisy stomach cough; cough short, acute, and spasmodic, like whooping-cough; expectoration thick and white. Rattling sounds of air passing through thick, tenacious mucus in the bronchi; difficult to cough up.

Back and Extremities

Rheumatic fever; exudation and swelling around the joints. Rheumatic pains felt only during motion, or increased by it. Nightly rheumatic pains; worse from warmth of bed; lightning-like from small of back to feet; must get out of bed and sit up. Hands get stiff while writing.

Skin

Acne, erythema, and eczema, with vesicles containing thick, white contents. Dry, flour-like scales on the skin (Arsenic). Bursitis.

Modalities

Worse, rich food, fats, motion.

Relationship

Compare: Bellad which Kali mur follows well in catarrhal and hypertrophic conditions. Kino (otorrhœa, with stitches in right ear); Bry; Mercur; Puls; Sulph.

Dose

Third to twelfth potency.

External use in skin affections with burning sensation.

Leaders

Is one of the so-called "Bio-chemic" remedies, or one of the twelve tissue remedies, claimed by Schuessler to be able to cure all the ills that flesh is heir to. It has not been proven enough to know half its real value. Clinical use in the potencies, ranging from the 3d to the 30th, has proven. that it is a remedy of undoubted great value. It is of use in the second stage of inflammations or the stage of interstitial exudation in any part of the body, and here it is not, so far as yet known, attended with the danger of Kali hydroiodicum. If it had been used in the massive doses of the latter remedy, we might have had more deleterious results than we now know of. I have seen enlarged joints after acute rheumatism rapidly reduced to normal size under its action, sometimes after they had resisted other remedies a long time; but I do not know of any characteristic symptoms for its use in preference to other remedies. It is also a remedy for tonsillitis after the acute inflammatory symptoms have been checked by Aconite, Belladonna, or Ferrum phos. I have found it very efficacious in deafness from inflammation and closure of the Eustachian tube. I began using it in the 3d or 6th, but have better success with the 24th potency. A great many cases of chronic incurable deafness might have been cured by this remedy if used early. Mercurius dulcis may be mentioned in this connection, as it was not when we wrote of the Mercuries, as another remedy for these Eustachian troubles. Of course you would be apt to have some other mercurial symptoms which would perhaps enable you to choose between the two remedies. Kali mur. is likely to come into use more from a clinical introduction than from provings. That is what Hering used to call a remedy born by breech presentation. It is possible, but not right or natural.

Characteristics

It is to Schüssler that we owe the introduction of this salt into homœopathy. His account of it is this: "It is contained in nearly all the cells and is chemically related to fibrin. It will dissolve white or greyish-white secretions of the mucous membrane and plastic exudations." This gives the indication for it in catarrhs, in croupous and diphtheritic exudations, and in the second stage of inflammation of serous membranes when the exudation is plastic. "When the cells of the epidermis lose molecules of K. mur . in consequence of a morbid irritation, then the fibrin comes to the surface as a white or whitish-grey mass; when dried this forms a mealy covering. If the irritation has seized upon the tissues under the epidermis, then fibrin and serum are exuded, causing the affected spot on the epidermis to rise in blisters. Similar processes may take place in and below epithelial cells." These are practically the whole of the cardinal indications in which K. mur . has been prescribed. On these indications it has been extensively used by homœopaths, but I am not aware of any proving having been made. Boericke and Dewey, in their standard work on the Tissue Remedies, give a schema of "guiding symptoms," but these consist in great part of names of pathological states. They contain, however, valuable indications, and I am indebted to these authors for my Schema. The conditions and symptoms most strongly emphasised are: Chronic catarrhal condition of middle ear. Closed Eustachian tubes. Snapping and noises in the ear. Greyish-white, dryish or slimy tongue. Hæmorrhoids, bleeding, blood dark, fibrous, clotted. Diphtheria. Rheumatic fever with exudation and swelling around the joints. The symptoms are < by motion, and < by any fatty or rich food or pastry. < By warmth of bed (rheumatic symptoms). It is said to have cured cataract after Calc. fl . had helped. I have cured with it rheumatism affecting most left shoulder and elbow, < in morning on rising. K. mur . manifests the action of its two elements in about equal proportions. It compares closely with K. chlor ., and it is quite possible that the proving of the latter will be available for both preparations, as Hering infers. Among the symptoms of K. chl . are: "Tendency to rush of blood to both eyes" and "Light before both eyes on coughing and sneezing." Boericke and Dewey give: "Protruded appearance of eyes, white tongue, croupy, hard cough, harsh barking." Hering gives: "Cough, stomachy, noisy, with protruded appearance of eyes." To which preparation this last belongs I cannot say; but in a case of mine K. mur . caused a severe aggravation of the following: "As if eyes would be forced out of head, with cough." I conclude, therefore, that "cough affecting the eyes" is common to K. chl . and K. mur . The great keynote of K. mur . is, whiteness ─ whiteness of secretions, exudations, eruptions of tissues. The next is, toughness ─ fibrinous exudations and discharges, too readily clotting blood-hence embolism, indurations, hard swellings. In H. R ., xv. 341, is an incidental proving of K. mur . by "J. De W. C." I have included his symptoms and marked them "(C)." They are mostly in the throat.

Head

Headache with vomiting, hawking up of white milk-like mucus. ─ Sick-headache with white-coated tongue, vomiting of white phlegm arising from a sluggish liver, want of appetite, &c. ─ In meningitis Schüssler's second remedy. ─ Crusta lactea. ─ Dandruff.

Eyes

Discharge of white mucus from the eyes, or yellow, greenish matter and yellow, purulent scabs. ─ Specks of matter on lids. ─ Superficial, flat ulcer of eye arising from a vesicle. ─ Blisters on cornea. ─ Feeling of sand in the eyes. ─ Parenchymatous keratitis. ─ Cataract.

Ears

Mouth

Aphthæ, thrush, white ulcers in mouths of little children or nursing mothers. ─ Swollen glands about jaw and neck. ─ Swelling of tongue. ─ Coating of tongue greyish white, dryish or slimy. ─ Mapped tongue. ─ Sensation as if a tumour growing on tongue (removed in a patient of mine).

Throat

Tonsils excessively swollen; stringy, tough mucus; swallowing excessively painful, even water or the softest bread; must twist his neck to get it down (C.). ─ Mumps, swelling of the parotid glands. ─ Hawks up offensive, cheesy, small lumps. ─ Greyish patches or spots in throat.

Stomach

Want of appetite. ─ Dyspepsia and indigestion, with a whitish-grey tongue, sick feeling after taking fat, pain and heavy feeling on r. side under shoulder.

12, 13. Abdomen and Stool. ─ Jaundice if caused by a chill resulting in catarrh of duodenum, stools light in colour. ─ Sluggish action or complete torpidity of liver, pain in r. side. ─ Constipation, light-coloured stools denoting want of bile, sluggish action of liver, or occurring in consequence of some primary disturbance, esp. where fat and pastry disagree. ─ Diarrhœa after fatty food, and in typhoid fever, with pale yellow, ochre, or clay-coloured stools, white or slimy stools. ─ Dysentery, purging, with slimy stools. ─ Hæmorrhoids, bleeding, blood dark and thick, fibrinous, clotted.

Urinary Organs

Acute cases of inflammation of bladder, in second stage, when swelling has set in and discharge is thick, white mucus.

Male Sexual Organs

Schüssler's principal remedy in gonorrhœa, and orchitis resulting from a suppression of same. ─ In bubo for the soft swelling, and in soft chancres Schüssler's chief remedy. ─ Gleet combined with eczema, visible or latent.

Female Sexual Organs

Menstruation too late or suppressed, checked or too early, excessive discharge, dark-clotted or tough, black blood, like tar. ─ Leucorrhœa, discharge of milky-white mucus, thick, non-irritating, bland. ─ Pregnancy: morning sickness with vomiting of white phlegm.

Respiratory Organs

Mind

Sensorium

A glass of wine or beer intoxicates easily.

Tightness in occiput, sneezing and coryza.
Aching in left side of temple.

Sight and eyes

Luminous appearance before eyes when coughing or sneezing.

While walking through fields covered with snow, sudden severe pain in right eye, followed at once by blindness, saw nothing with right eye, all seemed smoke and mist ; left eye became gradually weaker from month to month ; but little of retina can be seen, there being a kind of
mist over it, which seemed to spread from vitreous humor over background of eye ; retina dim and misty, veins forming a dark network ; in some places indistinctly defined spots, some larger than others, appearing like residue of extravasated blood ; arteries scarcely visible,
and seemed pale and contracted.
Dimness of right eye, he could not read a newspaper ; cornea, iris and pupil normal ; no external redness ; vitreous rather lazy, with some black shreds suspended in it, having very limited motion on rotating eye ; optic nerve and bloodvessels normal ; inside the
disk, a large, irregular, atrophic spot, involving choroid and retina, surrounded by several small ones ; edges irregular and pigmented ; sclerotic seen white through their centres ; choroid adjacent, congested and thickened ; some vessels lost in infiltrated part to
appear on other side ; a dull pain, occasionally, in eye and over brow, with an ill defined feeling of contraction around eye ; vision 20/200 ; Snellen 11 slowly deciphered. At the end of a month vision rose to 20/50 and Snellen 3 was read at five inches ; a year
afterwards the man could read Snellen 2 1/2, distant vision 20/70, but under Kali mur. for a week it was again 20/50. The patient's business engagements prevented longer treatment. (Improved). θ Chorio-retinitis.
Parenchymatous keratitis ; for three months there had been an infiltration into right cornea, which commenced at outer side and extended over whole cornea ; could only count fingers ; occasional pain, moderate photophobia and redness ; pupil dilated slowly and
incompletely, though regularly, and contracted quickly.
Retinal exudation.
Conjunctivitis and keratitis, with formation of small superficial blisters ; small ulcers on cornea following a blister ; feeling of sand in eye ; white mucous secretion or yellowish green pus from eyes.
Opaque spots on eye ; leucoma.
On lower edge of left cornea, a little blister from which a bundle of small veins run ; feeling of sand in eye ; edges of eyelids scabby.
Conjunctivitis and keratitis (scrofulous) with a formation of phlyctenula, but only superficial.
Suppurating points on edges of eyelids ; edges scabby ; yellow crusts of pus on edges of lids.
Secretion : yellowish green, purulent ; white, mucous.

Hearing and ears

Deafness : from swelling of internal ear ; from swelling of Eustachian tubes and tympanic cavity ; with swelling of glands, or cracking noise on blowing nose, or white coated tongue.
Earache ; with gray or white furred tongue ; with swelling of glands ; with swelling of throat, or cracking noise in ear when swallowing.

Smell and nose

Bleeding of nose ; at night ; from right nostril.
Tension and tensive drawing in cheeks inducing desire to sneeze, with cramp in malar muscles.
Stopped or dry coryza.
Violent coryza, sneezing and profuse secretion of mucus ; twitching of masseter muscles ; catarrh after mercury.
White mucous discharge in coryza, catarrh of frontal sinuses.

Upper face

Taste, speech, tongue

Tongue coated : thin, white, not mucous ; dirty yellow in stomacace ; white, or only in middle ; after diarrhœa.

Severe pain throughout whole body ; dimness of vision, letters appear smaller when reading ; sensitive, lachrymose ; their gums become sensitive and foul smelling, bleeding easily and discharging pus ; heat and dryness in mouth with salivation ; earthy color of
face ; face bloated ; lips hot, swollen, epithelium being thrown off in scabs ; general lassitude ; feels more tired in morning than evening ; attacks periodical, lasting eight to nine days.

Cutting in stomach.

Hypochondria

Tensive pressure in region of liver, disappearing after emission of flatus.
Painful pressure in region of spleen.
Portal congestion and enlarged liver ; emptiness in stomach ; pain in right side, light yellow color of evacuations, white or greyish furred tongue, constipation ; hemorrhoidal complaints.
Liver disease with dropsy.

Abdomen and loins

Colic in pelvic region ; diarrhœa ; shifting of flatulence.
Chill, resulting in catarrh of duodenum, white coated tongue ; stools light colored. θ Jaundice.

Stools and rectum

Diarrhœa : after fatty food, pastry, etc. ; evacuations light colored ; white or slimy ; white coated tongue ; painful, passing nothing but mucus ; in typhoid fever, stools like pale yellow ochre ; bloody, or bloody mucus.
Hard, dry stool, latter part mixed with mucus.
Stool so dry it almost crumbles.
Constipation through want of bile from sluggish liver ; light colored stools.
Constant pains in rectum.
Dysentery ; much blood passing with the slime.

Cold in chest, with thick white or yellowish sputa.
Lung disease, expectoration whitish, thick, or yellowish white and slimy : tongue frequently coated with white fur at back.

Pericarditis, second stage.

Embolus ; for that condition of blood which favors the formation of clots (fibrinous), which causes plugs.

Glands of neck swollen.

Upper limbs

Coldness in arm ; internal coldness in right arm.
Drawing, tearing in wrist joints or tearing in right wrist joint along ulna.
After dancing and cooling drafts from right side, a stiff neck and pain in shoulder when moving right arm ; next night so bad that she had to cry out ; three months later, cannot move arm, it causes pain in shoulder and shoulder blade ; elbow and
hand somewhat movable ; fingers numb and powerless ; pains are a continuous pressing ; dry heat or letting sun shine on it, does good ; cannot bear tight clothes or to lie on affected side.
Tenalgia crepitans.
Phlyctænoidal pimples on backs of hands.
Warts on hands.
Itching pimples with small vesicles on dorsa of hands.

Lower limbs

Inflammation of hip joint.
Hip joint disease, second stage, when swelling commences or is present.
Drawing in thigh.

Swelling of leg below knee ; cold and very hard, and looked as if ready to burst ; almost twice its usual size.
Chronic persistent swelling of feet and lower limbs, swelling soft at first, afterwards hard to touch, without pain or redness ; itchy ; at one stage snowy white and shining ; swelling less perceptible in morning than in evening ; great tension, with a feeling
as if it would burst.
Cramp in leg.
Ulcers on legs with callous edges.
Cold feet, with palpitation of heart.

Limbs in general

Lameness : rheumatic ; with shiny, red swellings ; chronic, caused by rheumatism of joints.
Rheumatic pains.
Acute articular rheumatism.
All joints swollen, could not stay in bed a single night.
Chilblains on hands or feet or any part.

Rest. position. motion

When moving right arm : pain in shoulder.
Violent exercise : vertigo with congestion to head.

Nerves

Great weakness ; with diarrhœa.
Twitchings of muscles, especially about face and head ; < after abuse of mercury.
Convulsions followed by delirium.
Epilepsy, if occurring with, or after suppression of eczema.

Attacks, periodicity

Every fifteen or twenty minutes : calls to stool.

Touch : excites lightning-like attacks of pain in face.

Skin

Itching of whole body, in bed.
Jaundice caused by gastro-duodenal catarrh.
Erythema ; swelling present ; white coated tongue.
Excoriation, chafing of skin, especially if inclined to scab, tongue whitish.
Intertrigo of infants.
Chapped hands or lips from cold.
Papula, small, red ; pimples on thigh and in right corner of mouth ; small vesicles on extremities filled with pus, red areola, not itching much.
Rash, with single pimples.
Pimples on face, neck, etc., caused by disturbed action of follicular glands.
Eruption with white scales.
