Butternut

General

A faulty elimination that produces jaundice and various skin eruptions, is pictured by this drug. The sharp, occipital headache, usually associated with liver disturbances, is very characteristic. Pain in chest, axilla and scapula, with suffocative sensation. Feeling as if all internal organs were too large, especially those of left side. Cholelithiasis.

Head

Dull, full head. Eruption on scalp. Sharp, occipital headache. Head feels enlarged. Pustules on lids and around eyes.

Nose

Tingling in nose; sneezing. Coryza, preceded by pain under sternum, with threatening suffocation. Later, copious, bland, thick mucous discharge.

Mouth

Acrid feeling in mouth and throat. Soreness in region of tonsils externally. Dryness of root of tongue and fauces.

Stomach

Atonic dyspepsia with much eructation and flatulent distention. Soreness in region of liver.

Back

Muscles of neck rigid, lame. Pain between scapula and under right. Pain in lumbar vertebræ.

Skin

Red, like flush of scarlatina. Jaundice, with pain about liver and right scapula. Itching and pricking when heated. Pustules. Eczema, especially on lower extremities, sacrum and hands. Erythema and erysipelatous redness.

Stool

Yellowish-green, with tenesmus and burning at anus. Camp diarrhœa.

Modalities

Better, getting heated, exercise, scratching, on rising in morning. Worse, walking.

Characteristics

The Butternut and the Black Walnut ( Juglans nigra ) are the American representatives of the Walnut family. J. ciner . and Juglans regia , or Nux juglans , have both been proved and studied. With both the digestion is first disordered, and with this other symptoms, as headache, occur. These run an acute course and then skin affections manifest themselves, and these run a chronic course (Clotar Willer, quoted by Hale). Before the homœopathic provings were made Jug. c . had a reputation as a mild cathartic and was successfully used in camp diarrhœa and dysentery in the early American wars. Applied to the skin, the juice causes reddening and blistering. "The green rind rubbed on tetters and ringworms dispels them." The provings brought out the characteristics in much detail, and clinical use has still further developed them. Jug. r . has been used with much success in scrofulous and scorbutic conditions; and both Jug. r . and Jug. c . cause dark, clotted hæmorrhage. Jug. c . from the lungs and Jug. r . from the uterus. Both act on the axilla, Jug. c . causing acute pains and numbness, Jug. r . affecting skin and glands. Jug. c . has some remarkable head symptoms. Sharp shooting pain in occiput is very characteristic. There is a headache with frequent micturition and burning. It has morning headaches like Nux, Bry., Chelid ., and Iris ; and it much resembles the last in the disturbance of the digestive organs. Pains in liver and right scapula; acute diarrhœa. It is one of the medicines which produces epigastric sinking. This extends to the abdomen and is accompanied by headache. One patient who was taking Jug. c . for acne developed all the symptoms of angina pectoris. But the skin is the organ most of all affected by the drug. All kinds of eruptions have been caused or cured by it, including scarlatina and rodent ulcer. There are a good many rheumatic pains in the remedy. The itching is < when overheated from exercise. Walking < chest pains; > pain from rectum to bladder. Going up hill < or = retrosternal pain. Stooping = pain in scapula and back. Dull headache is > when getting up.

Mind

Want to be alone, want to do nothing but eat and sleep, cannot think of concentrating my mind upon any one subject. ─ Confusion so that I could not study. ─ Dull feeling, cannot remember anything that I read ─ Absent-minded, forget what I am about.

Head

Vertigo, with slight nausea 11 a.m. ─ Slight vertigo with sinking faint feeling in stomach extending to abdomen. ─ Headache in morning on waking, with yellow coat on tongue. ─ Dull headache in forenoon, < r. side. ─ Head feels as large as a barrel. ─ Severe headache; can hardly see. ─ Headache with frequent micturition and burning. ─ Fulness in frontal region. ─ Pain in forehead. ─ Pain in r. temple in forenoon. ─ Pain in occiput in morning; > on rising. ─ Sharp, shooting pains in occiput, often associated with liver disturbance. ─ Itching of scalp, intense, must scratch constantly.

Eyes

Eyes red and swollen. ─ Inflammation with pustules on lids and around eyes. ─ Eyes burning in afternoon. ─ Feeling in eyes as if drawn together. ─ Loss of vision on sudden motion, with faint-like giddiness.

Nose

Numbness at root of nose; in bridge, > rubbing. ─ Dryness. ─ Watery discharge (l.). ─ Bleeding. ─ "Noli me tangere" (rodent ulcer) on nose.

Face

Pallor. ─ Erythematous redness, with dry, burning sensation.

8, 9. Mouth and Throat. ─ Tongue: coated white; yellow in the morning. ─ Burning and pricking in mouth and throat. ─ Taste coppery. ─ Swelling of submaxillary glands, < r. ─ Sore throat: in forenoon, with roughness; on swallowing; with swollen feeling. ─ Fauces dry. ─ Burning in pharynx. ─ Pain in r. side of fauces.

Stomach

Ferocious appetite. ─ Thirsty, want to drink all the time. ─ Nausea in morning. ─ Nausea < at night. ─ Burning in stomach. ─ Sinking in stomach extends to abdomen; with headache.

Abdomen

Stitches in hepatic region, and under r. scapula. ─ Pain in each hypochondrium; in umbilical region; in abdomen after dinner, then diarrhœa, with burning in anus; in region of inguinal rings, with soreness on rising from a recumbent position. ─ Flatulent pain in different parts of abdomen. ─ Heavy pain in umbilical region. ─ Burning in abdomen after stool.

Stool and Anus

Stools bilious, copious, frequent, painless. ─ Loose stool smelling like onions. ─ Diarrhœa: with cutting in abdomen; with burning in anus before and after stool; painless in forenoon; yellow, frothy, with tenesmus and burning in anus after stool. ─ A drastic purge, producing irritation and inflammation of mucous membrane of bowels. ─ (Camp diarrhœa.). ─ Soft stool with pain and flatulence in abdomen. ─ Stool soft and brown; dark, and sticky. ─ Constipation, with griping in umbilical region. ─ Constipation preceded by diarrhœa. ─ Stool: hard, and in balls; hard and dark brown; hard and brown, difficult; first part hard and brown latter part diarrhœic and greenish-yellow; small and brown; dark brown.

Urinary Organs

Micturition: frequent and copious; frequent with burning smarting (with headache).

Respiratory Organs

Raising a quantity of dark blood. ─ Expectoration of very tenacious mucus.

Chest

Great oppression of chest with cutting pains in lungs. ─ Scrofulous consumption with great emaciation. ─ Pain in l. chest; in centre at times, by day and night, with foreboding feeling at night, not < by walking. ─ Dropsy of chest of rheumatic origin where there are bright red spots like flea-bites. ─ Retrosternal pain, < , or only felt when going uphill; when walking out of doors. ─ Oppression at chest; hindering long breathing.

Heart and Pulse

Sharp wrenching in l. side at 6 p.m., when walking, with suffocating sensation under sternum, compelling him to stand still, which did not > the pain, the attack being similar to angina pectoris (Bry. Ø relieved immediately). ─ Pulse accelerated.

Neck and Back

Neck rigid. ─ Lame feeling in nape. ─ Pricking up and down spine. ─ Sticking under r. scapula on stooping. ─ Pain: between scapulæ; under scapula; under r. scapula, making breathing difficult; under vertical border of r. scapula, < moving the part and drawing a long breath; in region of lumbar vertebræ and r. sacro-iliac symphysis; in region of lumbar vertebræ in afternoon, with restlessness; in lumbar and dorsal vertebræ at night; in region of sacro-iliac symphysis, < sitting, also in forenoon, and in region of lumbar vertebræ; in lumbar vertebræ, extending through lumbar region and up spine. ─ Occasional shooting in lumbar region.

Limbs

Aching pains in the limbs. ─ Pain in elbows and knees.

Upper Limbs

Pain in shoulder. ─ Sharp, rheumatic pain in shoulders and wrists. ─ Pain in r. axilla in afternoon. ─ Pain in r. axilla, extending down arm. ─ Pain in l. arm. ─ Arms and wrists, as if sprained by hard work. ─ Numb pain in r. axilla, extending down arm along nerves. ─ Numb pain in arms and wrists in forenoon; in elbows and knees; in wrists extending up arms.

Lower Limbs

Cramp-like pain in hip at night. ─ Pain in thighs and l. knee in forenoon. ─ Pain in r. knee on ascending stairs; in ankles. ─ Occasionally sharp pain in calves. ─ Numbness of l. foot when sitting still.

Generalities

Loss of weight. ─ Aching in various parts. ─ Feeling as if all internal organs were too large, < l. side. ─ Restlessness in afternoon, with pain in region of lumbar vertebræ. ─ Weakness; with sick feeling. ─ Faintness, > rising and moving about. ─ Deathlike feeling, with chills and shuddering.

Skin

Exanthematous eruption resembling flush of scarlatina. ─ Eruption resembling eczema simplex on upper chest, with itching pricking when heated by over-exertion. ─ Pustules on thighs, hips, and nates, with itching and burning, a few pustules on body, face, and arms. ─ Itching in spots, now here, now there. ─ Itching on arms, > scratching. ─ Itching with burning. ─ Itching on head, neck, and shoulders, with pricking. ─ Itching on arms with burning and redness.

Sleep

Constant yawning, without sleepiness. ─ Sleepiness. ─ Sleeplessness; after 3 a.m. ─ Sleep restless; and light. ─ Sleep unrefreshing. ─ Dreams: vivid; frightful; frightful at night, and waking covered with sweat; troublesome; of being among Indians; ridiculous.

Fever

Chilliness alternating with flashes of heat; chilliness along spine; beginning in back when near the fire, without coldness of flesh.

Taste, speech, tongue

Tip of tongue sore, dryness of fauces.

Inner mouth

Swelling in submaxillary glands, < right.

Palate and throat

Pain in right side of fauces.
Sore throat, with dry lips and moist mouth.
Throat feels swollen, with pain on right side.
Chronic inflammation of throat, with general debility.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Loss of appetite, with coppery taste.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Nausea in morning ; vomiting, retching, with colic.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Pain in epigastrium and boring in stomach.
Sinking sensation at stomach.
Indigestion, with gastric irritability ; flatulence.

Hypochondria

Pain in each hypochondriac region.
Stitching pains about liver and under right scapula.

Abdomen and loins

Flatulence and aching in abdomen after dinner.
Deep seated pain on left side near kidneys.
Heat and pain in hypogastrium.
Irritation and inflammation of mucous membrane of bowels, followed by dysentery.

Stools and rectum

Loose stool which smells like onions.
Tenesmus and burning after stool.
Bilious, yellowish green stools with burning and tenesmus.

Stitchlike pain under right scapula, when stooping.

Lower limbs

Heat on inner side of thigh, and in feet, with cramplike pain in left hip at night.

Limbs in general

Rheumatic pain in right shoulder, extending to pectoral muscles, producing inability to draw a deep inspiration ; a single thickly set patch of impetigo figurata upon inside of left leg, between knee and in step which soon became crusted, discharging a purulent, ichorous secretion, irritating surrounding skin, producing a wide, inflammatory margin ; painful and sore ; difficulty in walking.

Rising : dull headache > when getting up.
Stooping : stitch-like pain under right scapula ; aching in small of back.
Could neither sit nor lie with any comfort on account of eruption.
Going up hill : retrosternal pain <.

Time

Morning : nausea.

When heated from overexertion : itching of whole body.

Fever

Scarlatina ; anginose symptoms pretty well developed ; no sequela.

One attack hardly subsides before a fresh crop appears : eczema.

Right : aching pain in temple ; erysipelas of face <, extending to ear ; eyelid turgid and infiltrated ; swelling in submaxillary glands < ; pain in side of fauces ; stitch-like pain under scapula ; aching in shoulder ; pain in axilla ; rheumatic pain in shoulder.

Arms and wrists as if sprained.

Skin

Redness of skin, resembling flush of scarlatina ; violent itching over whole body, in spots, changing about, first one place then another ; < when being heated from overexertion.
Erysipelatous inflammation of skin of body and extremities.
Numerous and extensive patches of eruption on body and extremities, varying in size from a dollar to a man's hand. θ Erythema nodosum.
Eruption upon body, face and arms ; painful itching causing an irresistible inclination to tear off the crusts. θ Ecthyma.
Eruption resembling eczema simplex.
Eruption general and almost confluent ; pustules large and thickly set ; those upon face seemed to be drying, with steady increase and aggravation of those upon body and extremities ; could neither sit nor lie with any comfort ; worried ; slept but little ; appetite poor ; diarrhœa. θ Ecthyma.
Impetiginous eruption upon chin, which had been torn and broken, producing hard crusts, which nearly covered entire surface ; some scattering crusts of same upon hands and arms ; several large aphthous sores upon inside of lips and upon tongue ; constipation ; child fretful and feverish ; ichorous secretion of sores had inoculated mother's breast, producing similar sores around nipples.
Pemphigus.
Pustular eruptions.
Various forms of eruptions emanating from a psoric or sycotic taint.
Entire circumference of leg, from knee to ankle, covered with lichen lividus ; the livid character of papula, and ecchymosed streaks running from pimple to pimple, appeared almost like a coarse purple net drawn around limb ; severe pressing pain extending from rectum to neck of bladder, thence radiating up spermatic cords ; attacks come on first half of night during sleep ; > walking ; must walk his room the entire latter half of night.
Chronic eczema of hands, one attack hardly subsiding before a fresh crop made its appearance, often passing from simple to impetiginous variety ; the ichorous and semi-purulent secretion oozing upon exercising the hands, would crust over again, causing most intolerable itching and soreness ; is awakened at times from sound sleep and finds himself scratching the skin off hands ; dyspepsia, with bronchial irritation and cough.
Simple eczema of hands and wrists, assuming finally all characteristics of a fully developed impetigo figurata in its pustular stage ; the patches had coalesced and eruption had become confluent generally ; pustules were discharging and crusting over, and there was an unbearable degree of tension and pain about them.
Eczema of hands, disease having reached impetiginoid degree, extending over entire back of both hands, and around ball of thumbs nearly to middle of palms ; upon removing bread poultices which patient had applied the softened crusts and intervening epidermis adhered to them, leaving a raw surface, and this was followed by a copious discharge of blood ; unbearable smarting pains.

Man, after feeling indisposed a week or two ; impetigo figurata.
