Common name
Gummi Gutti (GAMBOGIA - GARCINIA MORELLA)
General
The use of this drug in Homeopathy has been confined to its action on the alimentary tract. It produces a diarrhœa very similar to Croton. >From its pathogenesis, it is very evident that it has very intense and definite action especially on the gastro-enteric tract.

Heavy, with inertia, and drowsiness. Itching and burning in eyes; lids stick together, with sneezing.
Gastro-enteric Symptoms.--Feeling of coldness at edge of teeth. Great irritability of the stomach; burning, smarting, and dryness of the tongue and throat. Pain in the stomach after food. Tenderness in epigastrium. Pain and distention of abdomen from flatulence, after stool. Rumbling and rolling. Dysentery, with retained scybala, with pain in sacral region. Diarrhœa, with sudden and forcible ejection of bilious stools. Tenesmus after, with burning at anus. Ileo-cæcal region sensitive to pressure. Profuse, watery diarrhœa in hot weather, particularly old people. Pain in coccyx.
Modalities
Worse, towards evening and at night.

Is a very valuable remedy for diarrhœa, though not so often used, I think, as it should be. It resembles Croton tiglium in the suddenness of the desire for stool, and in the all coming out at one gush. Again, it resembles it, in that it is sometimes watery and yellow, but Croton tig. is aggravated by the least food or drink, which is not the case with Gambogia. Again, Gambogia has all the way from yellow, watery, to almost formed stools, and in each case, the stool comes all at once in one prolonged effort, and there is a feeling of great relief after stool, as if an irritating substance were removed. Sometimes there is burning of the anus after the stool, similar to Arsenicum, Iris versicolor and Capsicum. It is curative in both acute and chronic forms of diarrhœa. There is often much rumbling in the bowels.
Gratiola officinalis is another remedy that has the yellow, watery diarrhœa, gushing out with great force. It is sometimes especially useful in the summer complaints of children, especially where they have been drinking too much cold water, which frequently happens. Gratiola resembles Aloes in some points, but has not the hæmorrhoids.
Oleander is one of our best remedies for diarrhœa of undigested food, and the best indication for it is involuntary stool when emitting flatus. The least passage of flatus is always accompanied with stool, so that the clothes are always liable to be soiled. I cured with the 200th of this remedy a case of three years' duration in a child. It was my own child, and I had tried many remedies (it was in the beginning of my practice) and was almost despairing that she would ever be well or strong, but after taking the Oleander she was cured, not only of the diarrhœa, but became perfectly strong and well and has always remained so, not having the slightest tendency to a return of the trouble.

General
Gamboge. Gummi Gutti. N. O. Guttiferæ. Tincture of the resinous gum obtained from a tree ( Garcinia morella ) native to China.
Clinical
Anus, affections of . Backache. Blow, effects of. Coccygodynia. Colic. Diarrhœa. Eyes, inflammation of. Lienteria. Throat, sore. Typhlitis.
Characteristics
The chief reputation of Gamboge among homœopaths is as a remedy for diarrhœa. "Profuse watery diarrhœa, particularly with old people," is characteristic. Stool preceded by excessive cutting about navel; stool expelled all at once after considerable urging; and is followed by a feeling of great relief. Stools: yellow (the colour of the drug); green; bloody; lienteric. Burning in anus after stool; anus sore and excoriated. Frightful vomiting and purging, with fainting. But this action by no means exhausts the range of Gamb .; it has a number of symptoms in the eyes and throat; and also rheumatic symptoms. Pain in small of back, as if bruised or sprained. Pain in sacrum, resulting from a blow, was cured in one case of mine. Gnawing in coccyx. Burning pains are prominent. Burning in the liver. (Like many other yellow, bile-like drugs, Gamb . acts markedly on the liver.) Most symptoms are > by motion; cough > sitting up; > in open air; < towards evening or at night. There is periodicity in the symptoms. General soreness over the body.
