General

Eugenia produces a state of intoxication like alcohol. Everything appears beautiful and larger; excitement soon changing to depression. Acne, simple and indurated. The pimples are painful for some distance around. Acne rosacea. Nausea, better smoking. Comedones.

Head

Headache as if a board were lying on right side. Talkative. Hot lachrymation.

Extremities

Nightly cramp in soles of feet (Cupr; Zing). Skin cracks about toes. Fissures between toes. Skin recedes from the nails, forming pus.

General

Eugenia vulgaris. Malabar Plum-tree. Rose-apple. N. O. Myrtaceæ. A tree native to the tropics, never without flower or fruit. Tincture of fresh seeds.

Clinical

Acne rosacea. Catarrhal fever. Catarrhs. Comedones. Constipation. Coryza. Cough. Diarrhœa. Diplopia. Hernia. Hiccough. Impotence. Influenza. Otitis. Pimples. Throat, sore.

Characteristics

Like Eucalyptus, Eugenia causes a condition of drunkenness. It makes the prover very talkative but indolent. The most characteristic symptom of the proving is: " > after urination." Sudden great change in him after micturition. Everything seems more beautiful and bright, sky and trees more joyous and clear; but after a quarter of an hour everything became gloomy again. There are many symptoms relating to the eyes and vision: whirling in head while sitting; houses at a distance seem to turn bottom upwards. Darkness and double vision; on looking intently double vision disappears. Whirling before right eye as if it would become dark; eye becomes inflamed. It seems as though fire came out of eyes, and tears ran out in streams in evening and night. < By sun; causes eyes to fill with water. < By closing eyes; it makes the burning worse, prevents sleeping at night. Nausea > by smoking. Pain in small of back and calves. Aching in sacrum and knees. Sticking pain in back as if something were sticking in spine, > by bending back. Among the peculiar sensations are: Headache as if a heavy board were lying on right side. Sensation as of cramp in orifice of stomach; as if a ten-pound weight were hanging on rectum, and as if everything below would fall out. An old wound from a thrust became painful again. Rheumatic pain wanders from place to place with catarrh. Open air: much exhaustion, yawning whilst walking in morning. Cold water does not > burning in eyes. Skin disease is < during catamenia.

Relations

Compare: Eucalypt. (a myrtaceous tree) in catarrhal conditions; Lauroc. and drugs containing Hydrocyanic acid; Puls. (fugitive rheumatic pains). Antidoted by: Coffee ; by smoking tobacco.

Mind

Continued state, like intoxication, with great loquacity and indolence. ─ Disposition to isolation. ─ The patient is uncomfortable wherever he may be; desires to lie down when seated, and to rise up when lying down. ─ Sudden great change in him after micturition; everything seems more beautiful and bright; after quarter of an hour everything gloomy again.

Head

Vertigo, during which all objects seem to be reversed. ─ Fits of megrim in the evening, and rolling and burning pain in the head, with forcing towards the eyes, lachrymation, nausea and vomiting, during which the pains are aggravated. ─ Pains in the head at night, with burning pain in the eyes, violent thirst, and copious discharge of urine. ─ Cramp-like, pressive pains in the head. ─ Neuralgia in forehead over eye. ─ Headache as from a sticking from all sides at once, or as if everything was drawn together from within, recurring like a slow pulsation.

Eyes

Lachrymation, with burning and gnawing pains. ─ Burning pain in the eyes in the afternoon. ─ Suddenly biting in the eyes as from pepper. ─ Needle-like stitches id inner canthus r. eye. ─ Violent internal itching in eyes and nose, evening. ─ Darkness before eyes, everything seems double; > looking intently. ─ Whirling before r. eye. ─ Eyes took sleepy and drunken.

6, 8. Face and Mouth. ─ Pimples on the face, with painful sensibility of their circumferences. ─ Abundant accumulation of frothy and viscid saliva in the mouth, esp. before a meal; and when talking.

Throat

At night, burning in eyes, violent thirst from dryness low down in throat, so that he did not feel the drink, which also did not > the dryness. ─ Pain in small spot in region of l. corner of hyoid bone. ─ Inflamed throat (in catarrhal fever).

Appetite

Appetite increased. ─ Agreeable taste of tobacco, when smoking, of food, and of drink. ─ Great thirst. ─ Great desire to smoke tobacco.

11, 12. Stomach and Abdomen. ─ Cramp in orifice of stomach, causing nausea. ─ Nausea rising up from end of œsophagus. ─ Flatulence rumbling in bowels. ─ Drawing about navel. ─ Inguinal hernia from a fall.

Stool and Anus

Loose evacuations, followed by vomiting. ─ Scanty evacuation of excrement, of the consistence of pap, and sandy. ─ Urging to stool and colic. ─ Evacuations scanty, spurting, and fetid, with burning pain in the abdomen. ─ Constipation. ─ Scanty, hard stool, after much pressing, followed by spasmodic closure of anus. ─ Tenesmus.

Urinary Organs

Deep-coloured urine. ─ After making water, shuddering; or sudden increase of brightness and of light before the eyes.

Male Sexual Organs

Impotence. ─ Emission of semen too slow, or entirely wanting during coition. ─ After coition, perspiration and thirst.

Chest

Moist cough, without expectoration in the evening and at night. ─ Expectoration of yellowish sanguineous mucus.

Limbs

Desquamation and suppuration of the skin round the nail of the thumb. ─ Hot hands. ─ Cramp-like and paralytic pains in the tibia and in the heels. ─ Nocturnal cramps in the sole of the foot.

Generalities

Sufferings occur esp. in the evening and at night. ─ An old wound from a thrust became painful again. ─ Rheumatic pain wanders from place to place with catarrh.

Sleep

Profound stupefying sleep, even at noon, with confused dreams.

Fever

Shiverings run over him after micturition. ─ Coldness, as if the body were naked. ─ Perspiration in the morning, with burning thirst. ─ Hot hands. ─ Fever; heat before midnight, with little thirst and much sweat; during fever for several hours in morning, pain in back, > bending inward.

Mind

Constantly desirous of sitting alone and reflecting.
Nothing seemed right, when sitting, he wanted to lie ; when lying, he wanted to rise again.
Slight but long continued drunkenness, which made him very talkative, but indolent.
Sudden, great change in him after micturition, everything seems more beautiful and bright, sky and trees more joyous and clear ; but after quarter of an hour everything became gloomy again.

Sensorium

Whirling in head while sitting ; houses at a distance seem to turn bottom upwards.
Vertigo after rising from lying down, caused by rush of blood to head.
Looking inattentively objects waver or tumble one over the other, on looking sharp all is right.
Confusion of head, and slight sticking in it.
Dulness and slight ticking in head.
Dizzy and nauseated, in evening.

Inner head

Pressive, pinching pain in small spot deep in forehead.
Neuralgia in left forehead over eye.
Headache on right side, deep in, as if a heavy board was lying there.
Headache as from a sticking from all sides at once, or as if everything was drawn together from within, recurring like a slow pulsation.
Headache, as if something was rolling in head, with burning in it coming out at eyes, with lachrymation ; no relief from cold water ; at last he became nauseated, was obliged to vomit, but headache was made < thereby ; in evening lasting into night.
In evening, headache, nausea, vomiting, with subsequent bitterness of mouth, much thirst for cold water, and perspiration after drinking.
Whole night, headache, burning in eyes, great thirst, and much micturition.
Pressive pinching pain on vertex.

Sight and eyes

Darkness before eyes, everything seems double ; on looking intently double vision disappears.
On looking intently at anything everything is in order, but if he only looks ahead of him, everything wavers before eyes and becomes confused.
Whirling before right eye, as if it would become dark ; eye becomes inflamed.
After micturition, suddenly bright before eyes.
Eyes look sleepy and drunken.
Red vessels from inner canthus to cornea.
It seems as though fire came out of eyes, and tears ran out of them in streams in evening and night.
Suddenly, biting in eyes, as from pepper.
Contractive, pinching pain in eyeball in small spot above r. inner canthus.
Right eye inflamed ; needle-like stitches in inner canthus.
Unable to look at sun, eyes fill with water.
Unable to close eyes in evening on account of burning in them ; this also prevents sleeping at night.
Violent internal itching in eyes and nose in evening.

Hearing and ears

Catarrhal otitis.

Upper face

Pimples on face, painful for some distance about them. θ Acne rosaceæ.

Teeth and gums

Gums about hollow teeth inflamed and painful.

Taste, speech, tongue

Pain on very small spot in region of l. corner of hyoid bone, also when swallowing.

Inner mouth

Frothy saliva in mouth when talking.
Mouth full of frothy, tenacious saliva ; spits and hawks whole day.
Tenacious, yellowish, bloody mucus in mouth after midday nap.

Palate and throat

At night, burning in eyes, violent thirst from dryness, low down in throat, so that he did not feel the drink, which also did not > the dryness.
Pain in a very small place in region of left corner of hyoid bone, also on swallowing.
Throat inflamed. θ Catarrhal fever.
Cough felt in whole chest, but especially in pit of throat.
Mucus goes from nose into throat.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Eats and drinks with a very good appetite, so that he takes too much ; greater relish for tobacco.
Much thirst for cold water, with perspiration, in morning ; on awaking.
Wants to do nothing but smoke all day.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Hiccough when eating, more like eructations than loud hiccough.
Heartburn at night.
Nausea, going off by smoking.
Vomiting.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Sticking in pit of stomach.
Pain in right side near pit of stomach, under ribs as if it would be drawn inward.
Pressure and sticking in left side under ribs, near pit of stomach.
Contractive, pinching sensation deep in stomach.
Sensation as of cramp in orifice of stomach, which results in nausea.
Nausea commences deep in stomach and rises up from end of œsophagus.

Abdomen and loins

Flatulence, rumbling in bowels.
Drawing about navel as from a purge.
Confused feeling in upper abdomen like a coldness in it.
Burning in abdomen, as after drinking brandy, at first transversely across abdomen, then becoming general.
Colic, with labor-like pressing downward, much urging to stool and to urinate, with scanty discharge.
Colic.
Inguinal hernia from a fall.

Stools and rectum

Urging to stool and colic ; now and then a somewhat diarrheic discharge is forced out as with a syringe.
Diarrhœa : with much pressure backward.
Diarrheic discharge followed by vomiting.
Several stools a day with burning in abdomen and sputtering, fetid discharge.
Offensive, sputtering stool, without much urging.
Several small stools, with burning in abdomen.
Only wind is passed instead of stool.
Scanty, hard stool, after much pressing, with spasmodic closure of anus after evacuation.
Very scanty, pasty, gritty stool.
Pressure as in diarrhœa, at first a hard, then a pasty stool.
After stool, stitching in abdomen from above downward.
It seems as if a ten pound weight was hanging upon rectum, and as if everything below would fall out.
Cramp or pinching pains in rectum.
Tenesmus.
Bleeding hemorrhoids, copious for days, with great relief of mind and body.

Urinary organs

Tenesmus in bladder, ischuria.
Burning during micturition.
Frequent urination during night.

Male sexual organs

Violent erections with sexual desire, after midday nap.
Painful erections, with inward itching, without sexual desire.
Seminal discharge : too soon and almost without excitement in morning ; retarded ; the orgasm subsides several times before it leads to an ejaculation.
During coition no seminal discharge ; penis relaxed.
No erections in morning.
Impotence.
Glans penis remains sensitive a long time after coition.
Much turning and twisting in scrotum.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Sensation as if larynx was narrowed ; it prompts to a deep inspiration, whereby tightness is still more felt, it makes him hoarse.
Inflammatory affection of trachea. θ Catarrhal fever.

Cough

Cough : from throat ; in coughing, pain principally in throat pit ; more frequent in evening and at night ; not the least expectoration ; causes dryness of throat.
Cough raises something from pit of throat, but it always gradually falls down again.
Loose, deep cough, without expectoration and without pain, especially in evening.
Loose cough at night.
Much hawking causing a short cough.
After coughing, is obliged to swallow, when irritation passes off ; as soon as he swallows again is obliged to cough.
Epidemic cough among children, with coryza, inflammation of eyes and pain in ears.
Catarrh : with much phlegm and rheumatic pains ; with rattling in chest.
Constantly obliged to expectorate.
When speaking, is obliged to spit out a frothy saliva.
Hawking ; mucus yellowish and somewhat bloody.
Constant hawking, something is always loosening, but still something always remains adherent.

Neck and back

Pain deep in right side of neck near œsophagus, a fine, sticking, cramplike, constant pain.
Pain in nape of neck which hinders turning.
Sticking pain in back as if something was sticking in spine, < by bending back.
Pain in back, which makes him bend back inward, with heat in evening, disappearing in morning.
Sticking, burning, itching in a small spot on back, < after scratching.
Pain in small of back and in calves.
Aching in sacrum and knees.

Upper limbs

Skin recedes from thumb nail and suppurates.

Lower limbs

Violent sticking, extending obliquely forward above left crest of ilium, < when sitting erect, standing and bending toward left side ; > bending towards right Pain as if a band was drawn from crest of one ilium to other ; hip bones painful to pressure.
Pain in thighs and calves, he could hardly stand.
Paralytic pains in left tibia and feet.
Cramps in soles of feet when moving at night.
Skin cracks between and about toes.

Rest. position. motion

Rising from lying down : vertigo.
Sitting : whirling in head ; sticking above left crest of ilium < ; coldness as if he was naked.
Bending back : sticking pains <.
Bending inward : pain in back >.
Bending toward left side : sticking above left crest of ilium <.
Bending toward right side : sticking above left crest of ilium >.
Standing : sticking above left crest of ilium <.
Could hardly stand : on account of pain in thighs and calves.

Nerves

Very much exhausted, but lively after drinking coffee.

Sleep

Much exhaustive yawning when walking in open air.
Forgetting all his business he crept into a corner and said he must sleep ; he could not sleep, however, but still remained lying down.
After a sound midday sleep difficult waking, with much thirst and bruised sensation.
Sound sleep undisturbed by any difficulties.
Stupid midday sleep with confused dream.

Time

Morning : seminal discharge ; no erections.
All day : spits and hawks.
After midday nap : yellowish, bloody mucus in mouth ; violent erections.
Evening : dizzy and nauseated ; headache lasts into night ; nausea, headache, vomiting ; tears run out of eyes ; in streams ; unable to close eyes on account of burning ; violent internal itching in eyes and nose ; cough more frequent ; heat in back.
Before midnight : heat.
Night : headache, burning in eyes, great thirst, much micturition ; tears run out of eyes in streams ; burning in eyes prevents sleep ; violent thirst ; heartburn ; frequent urination ; cough more frequent ; cramps of soles of feet.

Temperature and weather

Open air : much exhaustive yawning while walking, mornings.
Cold water : does not > burning in eyes ; much thirst for.

Fever

Shiverings run over him after micturition.
Coldness, as if he was naked, while sitting.
Hot hands.
Fever ; heat before midnight, with little thirst and much perspiration, thereupon falling asleep ; during fever and for several hours in morning, pain in back, > bending inward.
Perspiration and thirst after unsatisfactory coition.
Perspiration when walking.
Catarrhal fever ; thirst during chill ; heat before midnight, with affection of trachea, throat, eyes ; sweat when walking.

Locality and direction

Right : headache on side ; whirling before eye ; pain in eyeball above inner canthus ; eye inflamed ; pain in side near pit of stomach ; pain deep in side of neck.
Left : neuralgia in forehead over eye ; pain in corner of hyoid bone ; pressure and sticking in side under ribs ; violent sticking, extending obliquely forward above crest of ilium ; paralytic pains in tibia.
Inward : as if stomach was drawn.
Backward : pressure in rectum.
Downward : labor like pressing in abdomen.

Internal pinching pains here and there.
Crawling, titillating pains.
