General

Similar to snake-poisons generally. Has very marked black discharges. Cold things disagree. Desire for sweetened buttermilk. Nausea and vomiting. Prostrating diarrhœa of consumption. Acidity of stomach, with faint feeling. Sudden pain in stomach. Spasm of œsophagus; pharynx constricted; food and liquids suddenly arrested, and then fall heavily into stomach. Spasms followed by paresis. Cold feeling in stomach. Fruits and ice-water lie very cold. Right-sided paralysis. Must have oscillatory motion. Rheumatic constitutions. Ear, nose and throat symptoms important.

Mind

Depressed; imagines he hears someone talking; dreads to be left alone. Fear of rain. Can speak, but cannot understand speech. Fears apoplexy.

Head

Ears

Nose

Chronic nasal catarrh, with fetid odor and greenish crusts. Ozæna; yellowish-green discharge. Mucous membrane wrinkled; nostrils plugged up with dry mucus. Pains from nose to ears on swallowing. Nostrils stopped up. Nasal bleeding. Pain at root of nose. Eruption about nose.

Throat

Thick, very offensive, dry, greenish-yellow crusts upon the posterior pharyngeal wall and extremely foul breath. Spasmodic contraction of œsophagus; passage of fluids arrested.

Chest

Coldness in chest after drinking. Hæmorrhage from lungs black as ink and watery; stitches in apex of right lung. Fainting caused by stooping. Oppression in going upstairs. Peeling off of skin from palms and fingers. Cough, with terrible pain through lungs. Worse right and expectoration of black blood. Sensation of a sponge in œsophagus.

Stomach

Feels cold. Sensation as if food turned like a corkscrew on swallowing; desire for sweetened buttermilk. Acidity after every mouthful.

Female

Dysmenorrhœa, with black blood. Discharge of black blood between menses. Itching of vulva and vagina.

Sleep

Dreams about dead persons.

Skin

Glands and skin of axillæ affected; itching with tetter. Tips of fingers peel off. Itching eruption in axillæ.

Extremities

Icy cold feet. Vesicular eruptions on feet. Arms and hands swollen bluish. Knee-joints feel sprained. Pricking under the nails.

Fever

Cold perspiration all over. Typhoid when ulcers have eaten into tissues, and black blood is discharged.

Modalities

Worse eating fruit; cold drinks; wet weather.

Mind and Disposition

Absence of mind. Depression of spirits ; desire for solitude. Fear of being left alone, as if something horrible might happen. Angry about one's self, and does not wish to be spoken to.

Head

Vertigo ; falls forward. Pain in the cerebellum, right side. Fulness in the head, as ; if all the blood were collected in it ; fears ; apoplexy ; with cold hands. Violent pain in the vertex (afternoon), as if the brain were shaking, with nausea which prevents her from keeping the head quiet. Congestion of blood to the head on stooping. Stinging headache, with sleeplessness. Weight in the forehead ; pain in the forehead. Lancinating headache -first in the left side of the head, extending to the right side.

Face

Dark complexion. Lancinations from the root of the nose to the ear. Redness and swelling of the right cheek, with chilliness all over the body. Redness, heat and formication in the right cheek. Swelling of the face, extending to the right side of the nose. Red blotches on the bloated face.

Eyes

Stye at the left eye, with lancination. Tickling and red streaks of the sclerotica. Large red, fiery spots before the eyes ; red bar before the eyes, when opening them. Dryness and burning in both eyes on waking ; bloated around the eyes in the morning. Eyes red and inflamed ; blear-eyed. Glassy look. When closing the eyes every thing looks red ; dotted with black points. Violent itching in the left eye. Aversion to light. Desire to close the eyes.

Ears

Buzzing in the right ear. Crackling in the ears, on swallowing. Itching in the ear. Cerumen black and hardened. Illusions of hearing ; hears whistling and ringing ; imagines he hears some one talk. Discharge of a serous fluid or greenish-yellow liquid from the (left) ear (in the morning). Discharge of blood from the ear.

Nose

Bad smell from the nose. Stoppage of the nostrils ; coryza from the least current of air. White and watery mucus is discharged from the nose.

Mouth and Throat

Tongue black or dark-red. Tongue swollen and whitish in the morning. Pricking at the tip of the tongue. The beverage is arrested in the œsophagus, as from a spasmodic contraction of this organ. Constriction, with pressure in the throat.

Stomach and Abdomen

Vomiting of green bile, followed by diarrhœa. Acidity of the stomach, with nausea and faint feeling ; sour eructations. Violent thirst ; cold feeling in the chest after drinking. Hunger, with violent headache if not satisfied at once. Vomiting of mucus, with fainting. Fruit and cold drinks feel like ice in the stomach. Burning in the stomach. Weight in the stomach, with nausea, after eating. Sudden pains in the stomach, as if she must sink down ; worse while sitting, better on walking about. Lancinations from both groins to the symphysis pubis. Colic, with urging to stool. The intestines feel twisted, as if by a cord, and strung together in a knot, with strangulating sensation. Formication at the anus, as if from worms. Sensation as if the blood in the abdomen were flowing backward.

Stool and Anus

Diarrhœa, blackish, frothy, yellowish, watery, with mum and rumbling ; bile ; bloody mucus. Discharge of black, liquid blood from the bowels and at stool, with colic and sensation as if the bowels were twisted. Prolapsus ani. Constriction of the sphincter, after bloody stool.

Urinary Organs

Red urine, with cloudy sediment. Thick urine, with red sediment. Suppression of urine ; strangury. Discharge of mucus from the urethra.

Sexual Organs

Men. Impotence. Weight and swelling of the testes. Discharge of prostatic fluid. The skin of the prepuce is thick and inflamed. Women. Discharge of black blood between the menses. Weight at the uterus ; at the vagina, after an hysteric attack. Itching in the vagina ; formication at the vulva.

Respiratory Organs

Dry cough, which ends in raising black blood. Taste of blood in the mouth, before coughing. Spitting of black blood, with painful tearing, as if proceeding from the heart. Constriction of the chest. Stitches in the upper part of each lung ; better when walking. Stitches in the left side of the chest ; worse when breathing. Oppressed breathing in the evening. Palpitation of the heart, with anxiety and trembling of the hands.

Back and Neck

Lancinations in the whole spinal marrow, from the occiput to the sacrum. Pressure between the shoulders. Coldness in the back. Pain in the back, with chilliness, cold feet and strangury. Stiffness in the right side of the neck. Lancinations in the left side of the neck. Painful pressure at the nape of the neck.

Extremities

Upper. Itching under the axilla, with tetter. The arms and hands are swollen, bluish, covered with red spots ; also the right leg and foot. Crampy constriction at the bend of the elbow, extending to the hand, as if one had carried a heavy weight. Pricking in the left upper arm. Hot rash on the right wrist. The right hand feels as if paralyzed. The tips of the fingers peel off. Lower. Cramps in the calves. Icy coldness of the right leg. Rheumatic pains in the left leg. Sensation of spraining and stiffness in the knee-joint. The left foot is swollen and blue, with red spots. Pinking under the toe nails.

Sleep

Sleeplessness from lancinating headache. Dreams of business, of dead persons.

Fever

Sensitive to cold. The arm shudders when dipping the hand into water. Coldness in the back. Dry heat, at midnight ; cannot endure any cover. With the fever, oppression of breathing. Flushes of heat in the evening, with redness and heat of the face and ears. Chill at noon, without thirst, followed by dry heat in the afternoon, without perspiration. Cold perspiration all over.

Skin

Red pimples at the tips of the fingers. The tips of the fingers peel off. Little pimples, followed by desquamation. Yellow spots on the hands and fingers. Red tetter from the corner of the right nostril to the cheek.

Conditions

The rheumatic pains begin on the left side. Fainting, with vomiting of mucus, or on stooping. A change of position is painful.

Characteristics

Elaps is distinguished from the other serpent venoms by the pre-eminent blackness of its discharges and hæmorrhages; black ear-wax. Characteristic symptoms are: Fruit and cold drinks lie like ice on stomach and cause a cold feeling in chest. Sensation as if all the blood were collected in head. E. V. Moffat has found Elaps 6 almost a specific in chronic naso-pharyngeal catarrh, with greenish crusts and subjective disagreeable odour. Rumbling in ears as of thunder. Sensation in brain as if shaken. Sensation as if food turned like a corkscrew on swallowing; as if intestines were twisted by a cord and strung together in a knot. Pains in the longs (especially right) are very marked: "Sensation within chest and at sternum, as if pleuræ were pulled off and the lungs violently drawn apart." Sensation as if a heavy load, iron bar, or weight on parts. Fluids roll audibly into stomach. The glands and skin of axilla are affected. (I cured with Elap . 200 a very old-standing case of irritating rash in axilla (right) with recurrent suppuration of axillary glands,) Periodicity is marked. Rest > , exertion < ; but walking > epistaxis, pain in stomach and lungs. Lying on abdomen > pain in stomach. Many symptoms are < at night. When closing the eyes everything looks red ; dotted black points.
Sometimes dark spots, as large as a penny, before open eyes, which gradually diminish and disappear by keeping eyes still ; they do not move with the eye, last two or three seconds at a time.

Palate and throat

Sensation as if food turned like a corkscrew, on swallowing.
Constriction in pharynx, with pressure in throat.
The beverage is arrested in œsophagus as from a spasmodic contraction.
Irritable throat, broken out with red blotches, about as large as half of a split pea ; blotches also extended over soft palate and sides of cheeks, and bled upon slightest irritation ; intolerable itching in ears.
Ulceration of throat, < left side, difficulty of swallowing liquids, occurring five or six times a year, lasting two or three weeks at a time ; attacks brought on by exposure to rain or wind ; dislikes wet weather apart from the throat affection, never feels happy in wet
weather.
Exceedingly painful deglutition of both solids and liquids ; sharp pain and soreness to touch across chest from right to l. axilla ; frontal cephalalgia ; sides of throat sore to touch ; sides of buccal cavity above fauces covered with numerous dark-red points, like
incipient pustules.
Deglutition of solids or liquids almost impossible ; throat exceedingly sensitive to touch ; tonsils swollen so that no passage is visible.
Dull pain from nares to ears ; when swallowing, pain goes to ears ; posterior wall of pharynx dry, mucous membrane fissured and covered with crusts ; offensive discharge from nose ; skin dry and hot, but always complains of feeling cold.
Sore throat, offensive discharge from nose, epistaxis, discharge offensive, smelling like putrid herring pickle ; posterior wall of throat covered with a dry, greenish-yellow membrane, wrinkled and fissured, extending to nares ; occasionally portions are detached and expelled
from nose or mouth, leaving a raw, corrugated surface ; membrane dry and corrugated ; stuffiness about root of nose, and dull aching from there to forehead ; on swallowing, pain extends to ears ; sense of smell gone ; frequent headache ; face dull
yellowish ; catamenia early, profuse, dark ; skin hot and dry, pulse 140. θ Chronic inflammation of naso-pharyngeal mucous membrane.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Canine hunger, yet unable to eat.
Hunger with violent headache if not satisfied at once.
Violent thirst ; desire for sweetened buttermilk.

Eating and drinking

After eating : weight in stomach with nausea ; oppression ; fruit lies like ice.
After drinking cold drinks lie like ice in stomach, and cause cold feeling in chest.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Acidity of stomach, with nausea and faint feeling.
Sour belching.
Vomiting : of mucus, with fainting ; of green bile ; followed by diarrhœa.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Cold drinks feel like ice in stomach ; weight at stomach after eating ; sinking, faint feeling at pit of stomach ; pain in stomach > by lying upon abdomen ; desire for sweetened buttermilk ; fearful and apprehensive of some fatal
disease ; constipation.
Fruits and cold drinks lie like ice on stomach.
Burning in stomach. θ Phthisis.
Sudden pain in stomach, as if she must sink down, < while sitting, > walking about.

Hypochondria

Painful pressure in right side of liver.

Abdomen and loins

Sensation as if blood in abdomen were flowing backwards.
Intestines feel twisted, as if by a cord and strung together in a knot, with strangulating sensation and black stool.
Lancinating from both groins to symphysis pubis.
Colic with urging to stool.

Stools and rectum

Diarrhœa : blackish, frothy ; yellow, watery ; mucous and rumbling ; bile ; bloody mucus ; in phthisis, black, liquid blood.
Bowels constipated.
Constriction of sphincter after bloody stools.
Formication at anus as from worms.
Prolapsus ani.

Urinary organs

Red urine, with cloudy sediment.
Thick urine, with red sediment.
Suppression of urine ; strangury.
Discharge of mucus from urethra. θ Phthisis.

Male sexual organs

Impotence.
Weight and swelling of testes.
Discharge of prostatic fluid.
Skin of prepuce thick and inflamed.

Female sexual organs

Weight at uterus and vagina after an hysteric attack.
Menses every 2 or 3 weeks ; flow profuse dark. θ Ozæna.
Black blood between menses.
Metrorrhagia ; discharge of very dark colored liquid and clots, but mostly liquid, and varies from half a pound to two or three pounds in twenty-four hours ; is so weak cannot rise from bed or hold anything in hand ; has the appearance of a corpse ; sensation of
soreness across lower abdomen ; slight pain to urinate ; dragging pain in both temples ; at times slight pain in left pleura, almost always > by chewing a small piece of gum camphor.
Sensation as if something burst in womb, followed by a continuous stream of dark-colored blood, on attempting to urinate ; flow very profuse, venous, and containing some clots. θ Cancer
uteri.
Itching in vagina ; formication at vulva.

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Complete aphonia ; sibilant rales, wheezing ; at night chokes and turns pale while sleeping ; soreness in throat below fauces on swallowing ; no respiratory sound in left lung, dull by percussion ; rales very distinct in right lung at
each inspiration ; pulse 90, skin dry, but not hot.
Laryngeal phthisis.

Respiration

Oppressed breathing in evening < on going up stairs.
Constriction of the chest.
Feeling of a heavy load on chest. θ Phthisis.

Cough

Dry cough, frequent and constantly recurring paroxysms, after suddenly catching cold.
Very violent attacks of dry cough, followed by expectoration of black blood, with severe tearing pains throughout whole chest and principally at apex of right lung.
Constant cough, with frightful pains throughout lungs, as if they were torn out, < upper part of right chest.
Cough with expectoration of masses of black blood, and often with sensation of laceration in region of heart ; before cough, taste of blood in mouth.

Inner chest and lungs

Stitches in upper part of each lung ; > when walking.
Stitches in left side of chest ; < when breathing.
Very violent attacks of dry cough which terminate with expectoration of black blood, with severe tearing pain ; throughout chest, and principally at apex of right lungs oppression after having eaten. θ Phthisis.
Pain in right lung for eight days ; cannot turn to either side nor sit up without assistance ; sleeplessness ; sibilant rales with crepitation in both lungs ; right lung sounds dull under mamma and near armpit to percussion ; each inspiration causes a crackling
sound ; respiration very difficult, almost agonizing ; vomiting all forenoon ; diarrhœa all day ; constant cough ; urine like blood. θ Pneumonia.
Pulmonary phthisis ; < in right lung ; rush of blood to chest and throat in morning.
Hæmoptysis, expectoration of black blood, with sensation of laceration in region of heart.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Tearing as from region of heart ; hæmoptysis.
Palpitation with anxiety and trembling of hands.
Pulse 120. θ Ozæna.

Outer chest

Sharp pain and soreness to touch across chest, from right to left axilla. θ Sore throat.

Neck and back

Stiffness in right side of neck.
Lancinations in left side of neck, also whole spinal marrow.
Painful pressure at nape of neck.
Weight as of an iron bar pressing on small of back.
Pain in back with chilliness, cold feet and strangury.

Upper limbs

Itching under axilla, with tetter.
Arms and hands are swollen, bluish, covered with red spots ; also right leg and foot.
Arms cold by putting hand in cold water.
Yellow spots on hands and fingers.
Crampy constriction at bend of elbow, extending to hand, as if one had carried a heavy weight.
Pricking in left upper arm.
Hot rash on right wrist.
Right hand feels as if paralyzed.
Tips of fingers peel off.

Lower limbs

Transient stitching pains at one time above, at another below right knee ; < from motion or warmth of bed.
Sensation of spraining and stiffness in knee-joint.
Cramps in the calves.
Icy coldness of right leg.
Rheumatic pains in left leg.
Icy cold feet.
Left foot swollen and blue, with red spots.
Picking under toe nail.
Vesicles on feet.

Limbs in general

Soreness of limbs < at night. θ Rheumatism.

in right side of chest and right shoulder. θ Hemiplegia.

Sleep

Drowsy all day ; no sleep at night.
During sleep bites hand.
Sleeplessness from lancinating headache.
Dreams of business, of dead persons.

Time

Morning : bloated around eyes ; rush of blood to chest and throat ; inability to rise.
All day : diarrhœa ; drowsy.
At 10 A. M. : fever lasts all night until.
Forenoon : vomiting.
Noon : chill.
Afternoon : pain in vertex, dry heat.
Evening : oppressed breathing ; flushes of heat.
At 7 P. M. : fever.
From 7 to 9 P. M. : dry heat.
At 8 P. M. : chilliness and heat alternately.
From 9 to 10 P. M. : chill.
Night : Everything seems white ; sudden attack of deafness ; sneezing ; chokes and turns pale while sleeping ; soreness of limbs < ; no sleep ; fever lasting all night.

Shaking chill, felt internally as if in bones, followed in half an hour by burning heat ; skin hot, thirst, fever lasting whole night, and until 10 A. M. next day.

Chill at noon, without thirst, followed by dry heat in afternoon, without perspiration.
Skin hot and dry, but constantly complains of feeling cold ; pulse 120. θ Chronic otorrhœa.
Chilliness and heat alternately at 8 P. M. ; chilly for a few minutes, then heat for a quarter of an hour.
Heat : with thirst ; alternating with chilliness.
Flushes of heat in evening, with redness and heat of face and ears.

For 2 or 3 seconds at a time : dark spots before eyes.
For a few minutes : chill.
For quarter of an hour : heat.
Half hour : after chill, burning heat.
Every day : attacks of intermittent fever, from 8 to 10 P. M.
For 8 days : pain in right lung.
From 8 to 10 days : pain intermits.
Every two or three weeks : menses.
For two or three weeks at a time : ulceration of throat.
Five or six times a year : ulceration of throat.
Three months : blindness in right eye.
Three years : blindness of left eye.

Characteristic

Fearful and apprehensive of some fatal disease.

Fear of being left alone, as if something horrible might happen.

Angry about one's self; does not wish to be spoken to.

At the least contradiction, body shudders, blood boils (Aur.,

Coc., Con., Fer.).

Vertigo with tendency to fall forward.

Weight in the stomach after eating.

Chill

Shaking chill, felt internally as if in the bones, followed in half an hour by burning heat; the skin is hot, with thirst, the fever lasted whole night until 10 A. M. next day. Coldness < by drinking cold water (Caps.); after a drink, shivering from head to foot with chattering of the teeth.
