General

The center of this drug's action seems to be in the urinary organs, and hence its employment in gonorrhœa and gleet. Urethritis in children from local irritation and gleet. Great trembling in extremities. Prostration. Swelling of body. Burning sensation.

Urinary

Difficult micturition. Urethra inflamed, with excruciating pain when urinating. Pain in back and loins. Severe trembling in limbs.

Relationship

Antidote: Stram.

Dose

Sixth to thirtieth potency.

Clinical

Characteristics

Doryphora in its general effects bears a strong resemblance to Cantharis . An extensive proving has been made, and to this have been added the effects of poisoning from handling the insects, and from inhaling the vapour when they have been burned or scalded. Like Canth., Doryph . produces burning in mouth, throat, gullet, stomach, abdomen, rectum, and urinary passages; strangury, urethritis, and itching burning and inflammation of glans penis. It has been successfully used in urethritis in children under ten, provoked by local irritation. A feeling of weight or heaviness is common. Fainting, weakness, prostration, collapse; great trembling of extremities. Prostration after typhoid and diphtheria has been cured. The weakness is < by talking. Local application causes ulceration. The blood will not coagulate; blood globules disorganised; enormous swelling of whole body; swelling of feet with burning; elastic swelling of whole body which will not pit on pressure (suggesting its applicability in myxœdema). The symptoms are < by motion; < from smoking; < in warm room; > in open air; pressure < (pain in kidneys).

Relations

The local effect is antidoted by: Earth; other antidotes are: Vinegar and other vegetable acids, Stramon. Compare: Agar., Ailanth., Apis, Bellad., Canth., Crotal., Laches., and with the Solanaceæ generally, as the beetle partakes of the properties of the plants it infests. In non-coagulation of the blood, Sanguisuga.

Mind

Stupor; with muttering and loud rumbling in bowels. ─ Delirium; talkative; red, bloated face, protruding eyes. ─ Irritability.

Eyes

Eyes red, sore; protruding; pupils much dilated; sight much impaired.

Face

Face bloated and red, giving appearance of a confirmed drunkard.

Mouth

Dark brown coating on tongue. ─ Offensive taste. ─ Violent heat in mouth; severe pain across kidneys; face red and bloated; constipation and retention of urine. ─ (Parotitis.)

Throat

Dry feeling in throat with desire to swallow. ─ Throat raw and constricted. ─ Burning in throat and down œsophagus, with stomachache and cough.

Stomach

Loss of appetite, great thirst. ─ Craving for something sour; symptoms < by smoking. ─ Nausea and vomiting; vomits dark, grumous acrid matter; of dirty brown fluid with diarrhœa.

Abdomen

Pain in spleen. ─ Rumbling in bowels (with stupor). ─ Pain in bowels, < by eating and drinking and by deep inspiration. ─ Abdomen feels heavy; sore and tender; burning.

Stool and Rectum

Morning diarrhœa, with pain in abdomen and burning in rectum. ─ Bloody, slimy stools. ─ Heaviness; intense pain in rectum.

Urinary Organs

Retention of urine. ─ Dysuria, with burning, stinging pain.

Male Sexual Organs

Itching and burning of glans penis, which is swollen and bluish red; urethra inflamed, with excruciating pain, esp. when urinating.

Chest

Soreness and oppression of chest with sore throat.

Back

Pain in lumbar region.

Limbs

Great trembling in extremities; in r. arm and leg.

Skin

An abraded surface on the wrist of one engaged in picking the bugs became painful, a deep sloughing ulcer developed, and the bones were laid bare.

Sleep

Tossing about all night. ─ Sleepless till 12, then restless sleep with terrifying dreams. ─ While sleeping, wild dreams, screams as if in great distress.

Fever

Skin alternately cold, clammy, and hot with fever. ─ Coldness of hands and feet. ─ High fever during night, restless and sleepless. ─ Violent fever 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. ─ Of children who inhaled vapour from a kettle in which some beetles had been placed, one died and the other recovered after a serious illness resembling typhoid fever.

The Colorado Potato Bug. Coleoptera.
"This insect belongs to the same family as the squash bug, the black potato bug, and the Cantharides-all possess the power of blistering the skin if bruised upon it. The Colorado potato bug has its original home in the Rocky Mountains, where it fed on a species of Solanum indigenous to that locality. It got a taste of the Solanum tuberosum, the common potato, and rapidly traveled East, until it reached the Atlantic". Hale's Symptomatology .

Mind

Inner mouth

Violent heat ; severe pain across kidneys, < by pressure and motion ; full, hard pulse ; face red and bloated ; staring eyes ; constipation and retention of urine. θ Parotitis.

Palate and throat

Burning in throat down œsophagus, with pain in stomach.
Throat feels sore, raw and constricted.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Loss of appetite ; great thirst ; craving for something sour ; symptoms < by smoking.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting.
Vomiting : with stupor and delirium ; of dark, grumous, acrid matter ; of dirty brown fluid, with diarrhœa.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Pain in stomach.
Nausea, at times vomiting ; faint feeling ; very tired ; trembling in all her limbs, especially hands ; cramp-like constriction in pit of stomach ; stools hard ; difficult, painful urination. θ Gastric derangement.

Hypochondria

Pain all over body, especially in region of spleen.

Abdomen and loins

Loud rumbling in abdomen, with stupor.
Abdomen feels very sore and tender.
Abdomen feels heavy, as if it were full ; severe burning.
Burning pain in abdomen about umbilicus.
Pain in bowels, in hypogastric region.
Violent pain in bowels in right side, passing downward to rectum.
Pain in bowels < by eating and drinking and taking a long breath.

Stools and rectum

Stools hard. θ Gastric derangement.
Diarrhœa in morning, with intense pain in abdomen and burning in rectum.
Profuse and persistent diarrhœa.
Continued bloody, slimy diarrhœa.
Dysentery, with intense pain in rectum.
Feeling of heaviness in rectum.

Urinary organs

Retention of urine.
Difficult urination.
Dysuria, with burning, stinging pain.
Profuse dark red urine, with dirty sediment, and voided with much pain.

Male sexual organs

Itching and burning in glans penis, which is swollen and bluish-red ; urethra inflamed, with excruciating pain, especially when urinating. θ Gonorrhœa.
Gleet and gonorrhœa.

Inner chest and lungs

Soreness and oppression of chest.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Pulse very weak, with coldness and collapse.
Pulse 120 to 140.

Neck and back

Pain in back, in lumbar region.

Upper limbs

Swelling of whole arm, very painful ; abraded spot on wrist developed into a deep ulcer, angry, red, with sticking, stinging pains through arms ; ulcer assumed a malignant character, eating until bones of wrist were exposed. (Local effects through na abraded surface).
Could not guide pen while endeavoring to write.

Lower limbs

Swelling of feet, with burning and stinging ; sensation as if full of pins.

Limbs in general

Great trembling in extremities. θ Gastric derangement.
Trembling in right arm and leg.
Icy coldness of hands and feet.
