General

Muscular paralysis without impairing sensation and consciousness. Paralysis of respiratory muscles. Reflex action diminished. Debility of the aged (Baryta) and from loss of fluids. Catalepsy. Nervous debility. Trismus. Glycosuria with motor paralysis. Curare decreases the output of adrenaline. Vomiting of bile in cirrhosis of liver. Diabetes mellitus, 4th dilution (Dr. Barkhard).

Mind

Indecision; no longer wishes to think, or act for herself.

Head

Lancinating pains all over head. Head drawn backward. Falling out of hair. Brain feels full of fluid.

Eyes

Sharp, stitching pains over right eye. Black spots before vision. Ptosis of right side.

Ears

Noises; unbearable earache. Lancinating pains start from ears; extending down to legs. Swelling of lobes of ear.

Nose

Ozæna. Tubercles on nose; fetid lumps of pus.

Face

Facial and buccal paralysis. Tongue and mouth drawn. Red face. Tongue and mouth drawn to right.

Female

Dysmenorrhœa. Menses too early, during menses, colic, headache, kidney pain. Leucorrhœa, thick, purulent, offensive.

Respiratory

Threatened paralysis of respiration on falling asleep. Short breath. Short dry cough; provokes vomiting, followed by fainting. Chest sore to pressure. Very distressing dyspnœa.

Extremities

Tired pain up and down spine. Arms weak, heavy. Cannot lift the fingers. Weakness of hands and fingers in pianists. Legs tremble; give way in walking. Debility; paralysis. Catalepsy. Favors development of corns. Reflexes lessened or abolished.

Skin

Leprosy. Dirty-looking skin. Boils. Tubercles on nose. Liver spots. Blood oozes through. Itching.

General

Curara, Woorara. Woorali. Hoorali. Oorari. (An arrow poison used by South American Indians. Accounts differ as to its actual composition, into which the juice of different species of Strychnos are said to enter, or of Cocculus toxiferos with serpent poison. Others have said it is prepared from the venom of toads. In appearance it is something like the extract of liquorice. That used in C. Wesselhoeft's provings was obtained from Merck of Darmstadt.) N. Characteristics

Curare produces muscular paralysis, probably through its action on the nerve endings in the muscles, without affecting either the muscle substance or the nerve substance, and without impairing sensation and consciousness. It is thus in many ways the opposite, in its action, of Nux vomica , though it is said to have the juice of a Strychnos in its composition. It causes death by paralysis of the respiratory muscles. Reflex action is diminished or abolished (opp. Nux ), and this is one great indication for its employment in homœopathic practice. A cure of pseudo-hypertrophic paralysis by the 200th has been recorded. A condition resembling catalepsy has been induced by it; immobility with fixed gaze on waking. Fetidity characterises many of the secretions and discharges. Two cases of diabetes in middle-aged men have been cured by Burkhardt with Cur . 4. It is suited to scrofulous children; producing scrofulous eruptions on skin, eczema, especially of face and behind ears; also liver-spots, yellow-brown. It favours the formation of corns. Debility short of paralysis indicates it; debility of the aged, and nervous debility from loss of fluids. Its relation to hydrophobia and tetanus is probably antipathic. It causes a sensation as if the brain were full of fluid. Piercing, lancinating pains. Throbbing pains. Weakness; heaviness; numbness; numbness with tingling. < By movement; walking; ascending. < Dampness, cold air, cold weather, cold wind, change of weather. < 2 a.m. and 2-3 p.m. Many symptoms appear on right side.

Relations

In cases of poisoning artificial respiration must be resorted to. Bromine and Chlorine antidote its effects. If the poisoning is due to a punctured wound, rubbing in tobacco or salt will neutralise it. It is an antidote to: Strychnia and to the poison of rabies. Compatible: After Arn. (paralysis from injury) after Bell. (paralysis after epistaxis). Follows well in debility of the aged: Bar. c. Compare: Nux v.; Aran. d. (fever < in damp weather; Ferr. (hammering pains in head). Crotal (blows in region of cerebellum). In yellow-brown spots on skin (Sep., Lyc., Nux, Sul.).

Mind

Inability to think or study; forgetful; stupid; sleepy; indolent. ─ Indecision. ─ Excited, hurried feeling. ─ Depressed; desire to be alone.

Head

Instant giddiness; falling in swoon while standing or walking. ─ Dizzy when looking at near objects or at water. ─ Head confused, great weight in vertex. ─ Nervous headache; lancinating, piercing pains all over head compelling to lie down and stretch; head drawn backward with stiffness of neck; painful oscillation of brain, as if it were full of fluid; neuralgic pain starting in front and radiating to neck and face; violent blows in region of cerebellum. ─ Darting through temples, < r. ─ Headache from base of brain up, < from mastication. ─ Headache: despairing of power of thought; < vigorous movement, or stooping. ─ Shattered, torn feeling on coughing, side of head must be held. ─ Sharp sticking over r. eye extending backwards over l. side of head. ─ Head beats like a hammer, with vomiting of bile. ─ Rush of blood to head.

Eyes

Heavy eyes lids can hardly be kept open; ptosis (r.). ─ Eyes haggard, sunken. ─ Red, hot sensitive to light. ─ Feel as if full of sticks. ─ Black spots before vision, esp. < from reading.

Ears

Different noises as of whistling, or crying of animals; ringing in r. ear. ─ Lancinating pains starting from ears and reaching down legs, compelling to lie down. ─ Otitis interna, driving crazy, purulent discharge.

Nose

Nasal catarrh. ─ Ozæna; fetid lumps of pus.

Face

Paralysis of muscles of expression. ─ Red face, head beats like a hammer; after fever; with cough. ─ Aching r. side of face. ─ Facial and buccal paralysis; in some cases with difficulty of swallowing.

Mouth

Tongue and mouth drawn to r. ─ Tongue coated. ─ On waking tongue yellowish at base, papillæ raised, light pink anteriorly, bitter or bloody taste, yellow-white. ─ Mouth dry.

Stomach

Thirst and great hunger with fever. ─ Sudden hunger almost to faintness. ─ Great thirst esp. evening and night. ─ Craves acids. ─ Aversion to bread. ─ > After first mouthful of food. ─ Chill after eating. ─ Hiccough frequent and annoying. ─ Nausea in morning; after eating. ─ Vomits green bile all night; so weak can hardly stand. ─ Empty, gone feeling in stomach. ─ Sharp rheumatic pain in pit of stomach, followed by nausea. ─ Shooting in stomach. ─ Pyrosis, pain and distension after eating ever so little.

Abdomen

Weary ache from throat to l. hip. ─ Bowels feel sore and bruised. ─ Pain in groin low down with heaviness in limbs while walking. ─ Neuralgic pain in hypogastrium with pressure in vagina.

Stool and Anus

Diarrhœa with constant urging; fetid, thin fæces, excessive pain in piles. ─ Extreme watery diarrhœa.

Urinary Organs

Clear and frequent urine, with digging, crampy pain in kidneys; shooting in stomach; dry mouth; great thirst, esp. evenings and night; sugar in urine; great emaciation; (acute diabetes). ─ Urine copious, urgent; bladder feels distended.

Female Sexual Organs

Menses seven days too early, griping in r. ovary, bearing-down, dragging, tired, in all pelvic organs, severe (causing faintness) in lumbo-sacral spine, running down thighs, flow scanty, very dark, lasting three days instead of five. ─ Ulcerations of os uteri (scirrhus), ichorous, corroding discharge; bearing-down pains in womb; shocks, sharp shooting stitches, quivering. ─ Ulcerations, smarting in vulva and thighs; shooting and digging pains in womb. ─ Indolence, night sweats, repugnance to sexual intercourse (vaginitis). ─ During menses: colic, headache, pains in kidneys, malaise, hypochondriasis. ─ Leucorrhœa, thick, purulent, offensive, in clots.

Respiratory Organs

Dyspnœa, stitching pains r. side. ─ Dyspnœa from weakness of motor nerves as in phthisis or emphysema. ─ Paralysis of respiration. ─ Dyspnœa < ascending. ─ Short, hacking cough, always dry, with soreness of chest walls, < damp weather, or laughing; spasmodic, shakes whole body, = vomiting, is often followed by vomiting; = headache, red face. ─ Cough always troublesome in morning. ─ Cough < breathing cold air; laughing; moving; eating. ─ Burning heat in throat with sensation of distension. ─ Severe pains in lungs, esp. l.; sharp, piercing pain through chest, always much < in damp weather; dyspnœa, chronic cough.

Chest

Chest sore, can hardly bear pressure of stethoscope.

Heart

Precordial anguish, with palpitation and stinging pains in heart.

Neck and Back

Stiffness in neck, head drawn back. ─ Stiffness of muscles of r. neck and shoulder. ─ Dull, tired ache in shoulders and across back; numb, tired pains up and down spine and in head. ─ Chills running up back and all over body.

Limbs

Paralysis of extremities burning with heat and chills. ─ Aching in all the limbs and body. ─ Numbness and tingling.

Upper Limbs

Complete paralysis of r. deltoid. ─ Pain and numbness l. side of chest and l. arm. ─ Leaden heaviness in arm increasing difficulty in playing piano. ─ In evening, arms and hands swollen, more painful and heavy. ─ Great weakness, esp. of wrists and hands.

Lower Limbs

Legs tremble and give way in walking. ─ Sciatica with great stiffness. ─ Corns.

Skin

Body blue, and yet fever. ─ Itching with hunger. ─ Eczema. ─ Liver-spots.

Sleep

Drowsy; cannot keep awake. ─ Nights restless, always desiring to put feet out of bed, esp. towards morning. ─ Cannot sleep late enough to obtain a good night's rest; dreams of fire and the business of day; < from lying long in bed, must get up as her feet and back ache.

Fever

Chill; creeping up back; from stomach, on abdomen, and spreading all over; without thirst. ─ Heat < at night and in open air. ─ Sweat with every exertion. ─ Sweat, cold and bloody, esp. at nights.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Rheumatic pain in pit of stomach, at times quite sharp, followed by nausea.

Digestive functions entirely prostrate, cannot bear anything on stomach, pyrosis, pain and distension after eating ever so little ; can eat only cornmeal mush and drink coffee. θ Ulcer

Abdomen and loins

Wearing ache from throat to left hip. θ Paralysis.

Stools and rectum

Diarrhœa, with constant urging, fetid, thin, mush-like feces, excessive pain in hemorrhoidal tumors. θ Ulcer of os uteri.
Extreme watery diarrhœa.

Urinary organs

Clear and frequent urine, with digging, crampy pains in kidneys ; shooting in stomach ; dry mouth ; great thirst, especially evenings and at night ; sugar in urine, with great emaciation.
Diabetes, acute cases.

Female sexual organs

Ulcer of os uteri, funnel-shaped, upper diameter one inch ; whole neck of womb of a horny-like character, dark red, purplish, gnawed as if from mice all over surface of ulcer ; two small opaque pustules of size of pea on inner edge, containing in
middle a translucent bloody fluid. Ichorous discharge, corroding, fetid ; indurations of abdominal parietes towards inguinal and ovarian regions, excessively painful to touch. Vaginal corrugations tumefied, reddish, inflamed ; very sensitive hemorrhoidal fissures and swelling of
rectum and anus. General appearance of scirrhous cachexia. Digestive functions entirely prostrate.
Diarrhœa with constant urging. Excessive pain in hemorrhoidal tumors ; bearing down of womb, pains and shocks, sharp shooting stitches ; quivering in womb ; burning in womb and all around it ; dull, anxious expression ; aching in all the limbs and

Voice and larynx. trachea and bronchia

Frequent hoarseness ; suffocating attacks, with sensation as if larynx were stopped up. θ Cough.
Burning and shooting in larynx ; hoarseness which occasions almost complete loss of voice. θ Cough.
Sensation of roughness and dryness in whole course of respiratory passages.

Respiration

Shortness of breath. θ Nervous debility.
Respiration difficult, stitching pains in right side. θ Cough.
Dyspnœa from weakness of respiratory motor nerves, as in phthisis and emphysema.

Cough

Short, hacking cough, no expectoration, always dry, with soreness of walls of chest, < in damp weather, or laughing. θ Nervous debility.
Cough, dry, spasmodic, shakes whole body, provokes vomiting, and is often followed by fainting.
Chronic cough, always troublesome in morning. θ Nervous debility.
Cough < by breathing cold air, laughing, moving and eating.
Cough with white gelatinous expectoration. θ Paralysis.

rising ; nausea in morning ; appetite variable ; perspires with every exertion ; pain in loins ; prolapse of uterus for several years ; wearing ache from throat to left hip ; cough with white gelatinous expectoration.
Arms and fingers weak, as after a long illness ; arms become numb, and as if sprained or broken at elbows ; this pain extends to shoulders and across back a dull tired ache ; feeling as if heavy weights were hanging to arms ; same pains up and down spine and in head,
numb tired pains ; similar pains in knees ; desire to stretch elbows, but muscles of arm are sore ; feeling along arm as if it had been burnt ; pains much < in damp weather. θ Nervous

Nerves

Nervous Debility.
Debility of the aged, great failure of strength ; no cough, pain, or disordered digestion.
After being bitten by a dog suspected to be rabid, muscular restlessness, spasms, hydrophobia, and photophobia, and instead of the anguish she was in good humor ; (cured by injections, which were followed by symptoms of paralysis, from which patient had not entirely recovered even
after a few months).
Great weakness and prostration, burning in hips, and crampy pains on least movement.
(OBS :) Frequent epileptic fits with convulsions, loss of consciousness, lasting from a quarter to half an hour, followed by somnolence of many hours, or even mental disturbance for two days.
(OBS :) For four years fits of "petit mal", and for the last five months, seven fits of complete epilepsy of great intensity.
(OBS :) Two brothers, suffering from a disease intermediate between raging mania, chorea major, and epilepsy, had fits twice a day, of one to three hours, in which partial loss of consciousness and delirium were present, but generally with retention of consciousness, involuntary
movements, springing, pirouetting, creeping, scratching on the floor, etc., between which intervened paralytic symptoms, numbness, aphonia ; besides these fits, there was general weakness, especially in morning.
Pure paralysis ; nervous debility, from loss of fluids, or exhausting illness.
Double facial and right lateral paralysis (in consequence of repeated epileptic attacks), swallowing and articulation also affected.
Instant giddiness ; paralysis of the lower extremities and in fact everywhere.
Considerable general motor paralysis, no pain.
Paralysis from mechanical injury.
(OBS :) Traumatic tetanus.
Progressive locomotor ataxia.

Sleep

Nights restless, always desires to put feet out of bed, especially towards morning.

Time

At 2 A. M. : rigors.
Morning : nausea ; cough troublesome ; heat > ; general weakness.
At 2 or 3 P. M. : fever continuing into night ; 4 P. M., fever.
In evenings : arms and hands swollen ; great thirst.
At night : restless ; great thirst ; heat < ; cold and bloody sweat.
All night : vomits green bile.

Temperature and weather

Aggravation by dampness, damp weather, change of weather, or cold wind.
Open air : heat <.
Cold air : cough < by breathing.
Damp weather : cough and soreness of chest < ; soreness and pains in arms <.

Fever

Sensation of shivering, starting from stomach and spreading over whole body.
Chill : without thirst ; commencing on abdomen and spreading all over.
Rigors at night, about 2 o'clock ; no more sleep ; some fever ; seldom moisture, except under arms. θ Ulcer of os uteri.
Burning heat accompanied by partial and transient chills, incoherent speech, and often by paralysis of extremities.
Pernicious fever, with constant chilliness.
Incoherent speech, with burning heat and chills.
Yawning and stretching, hot head and hands, convulsive paroxysms and fainting.
Burning in hips, great weakness and prostration, crampy pains on least movement.
Lips get blue, and body purple, with fever ; after fever (every day at 4 P. M.), gets very red in face, and head beats like a hammer.
Daily fever, commencing at 2 or 3 P. M., and continuing well into night.
Fever with thirst and great hunger.

Locality and direction

Touch : induration on abdomen painful.
Pressure : can hardly bear stethoscope.
After being bitten by dog : muscular restlessness, spasms, hydrophobia ; photophobia.
Mechanical injury : paralysis.

Skin

Body blue and yet fever.
Eczema.

Stage of life, constitution

In older, scrofulous children.
Boy, æt. 12, and another, æt. 16, also two brothers, æt. respectively, 12 and 10 ; epilepsy.
Anna M., æt. 20, married 3 months, pregnant in seventh month ; vaginitis.
Stone cutter, æt. 20, for nine years ; epileptic fits.
Girl, æt. 24, eighty days after being bitten by a dog suspected to be rabid, lyssa humana (injections O. 2 grammes in 7 doses during five hours).
Lady, graduate of Conservatory of Stuttgart, where she practiced excessively ; nervous debility.
Laundress, æt. 30 ; paralysis of right deltoid after an apoplectic attack.
Mrs. Van N., æt. 30, three children, blond, blue eyes ; ulcer of os uteri.
Woman, æt. 35, had phthisis for many years ; debility and cough, with expectoration.
Mrs. J., suffering from scanty menstruation, pains in os uteri, watery, starchy leucorrhœa ; ozæna.

Relations

Antidoted by : Artificial respiration. Bromine and Chlorine destroy the poisonous effects. Tobacco or salt, applied topically, neutralize effects of Curare wounds.
It antidotes : Strychnia , but Chloral is better. Probably antidotal to Lyssin .
Compatible : after Arnica in paralysis from injury ; after Bellad . in paralysis after apoplexy ; Baryt. carb . is often indicated after Curare in nervous debility of
the aged.
Compare : Nux vom. ; Aranea in fevers, < from damp or wet weather ; Ferrum in hammering pains in head.

Characteristic

Debility of old age, great failure of strength. Nervous debility, from loss of fluids, or exhausting illness.

Spinal lesions, idiopathic or traumatic; sensation acute, motion paralyzed; painless paralysis.

Aggravation

Dampness, damp weather, change of weather, cold wind, or the least movement.

Amelioration

After the first mouthful of food. (Compare with Aran.)

Type

Quotidian. Type not marked.

Time

2 or 3 P. M., every day, and continuing well into the night.

Chill

Without thirst. Coldness commencing on the abdomen and spreading all over. Sensation of shivering, starting from the stomach and spreading over the whole body. Constant chilliness.

Heat

With thirst; especially in the head, on the back and legs; burning in the hips; great weakness and prostration, crampy pains on the least movement. Fever with thirst and great hunger; yawning and stretching, hot head and hands, convulsive paroxysms and fainting. Daily fever, commencing at 2 or 3 P. M., and con- tinuing well into the night; burning heat, accompanied by partial and transient chills, incoherent speech, and often by paralysis of the extremities. Lips get blue and body purple; after fever very red face, hammering headache. Pernicious fever, with constant chilliness (Petr.); heat increased at night or in the open air; less in the morning.

Sweat

Cold and bloody, especially at night.

Tongue

Deep red, cracked and bleeding.

Neither our provings nor clinical experience of Curara are suffi- cient to define many characteristics.
