Sweet Bark

General

Acts on the digestive tract; constipation. Aversion to smell of tobacco. Inclination to vomit very marked.

Stomach

Hunger after meals. Desire for hot drinks. Nausea and vomiting. Pain in stomach as from a shock. Pressing colic.

Rectum

Constipation; stools hard, covered with mucus (Graph). Bright blood with stool. Diarrhœa alternating with hard, lumpy stool, with backache and lassitude, preceded by griping. Gnawing pain high up in rectum.

Dose

First to third potency.

Characteristics

Cascarilla has a family resemblance to the other Euphorbians. It acts prominently on the digestive tract. Its leading symptoms are: Sensation of swelling deep down in throat. Accumulation of mucus in throat. Hunger after meals and feeling of emptiness. Aversion to smell of tobacco smoke. The concussion of every step is felt painfully in stomach. Griping preceding morning stool. The abdominal symptoms are > by warm drinks. Movings about in abdomen as if hot water undulating there. Boils in inguinal region. Diarrhœa with backache and lassitude. Lassitude and muscular weakness are marked throughout. Constant slight urging with gnawing pain high up in rectum. Constipation, stools hard, in pieces, covered with mucus. Passes bright blood with or without stool, in large quantities, causing weakness. Short, dry cough from tickling in trachea. Hæmoptysis. Stitch upward in l. side of chest. Backache and weakness. Inclination to lie down. Sleep with clear consciousness. Heat with thirst for warm drinks (intermittents).

Ears

Buzzing in the ears. ─ Internal and external heat of the ears.

Mouth

Roughness of the tongue. ─ Bitter taste in the mouth and of tobacco smoke, for which a repugnance is felt.

Throat

Sore throat on swallowing, as if from an internal swelling.

Stomach

Heat with thirst and desire for hot drinks. ─ Aversion to smell of tobacco smoke. ─ Abortive risings. ─ Pressure on the stomach, as if from fulness. ─ Pain in the stomach as from concussion. ─ Heat in the stomach and burning pain in the epigastrium.

Abdomen

Tension and pressure on the hypochondria. ─ Movement in the abdomen as if hot water were undulating there. ─ Flatulent, aching colic.

Stool and Anus

Evacuations difficult, hard, broken, and covered with mucus, preceded by pinchings in the abdomen. ─ Discharge of clear blood from the rectum, with the evacuations, during and after hard, brown stool in large lumps; and without stool. ─ Diarrhœa alternating with hard, lumpy stool.

Urinary Organs

After the emission of urine, pain resembling excoriation in the glans.

Respiratory Organs

Hæmoptysis. ─ Stitch upwards on l. side.

Back

Backache and weakness; muscles pained violently.

Croton Eleuteria. Euphorbiaceæ.
Tincture of the bark, which is bitter, aromatic and tonic in its effect, somewhat resembling Cinchona bark.
It is mentioned as curative in hemorrhages and intermittent fever, in Tschudi's Peru, vol. ii, p. 217. The provings are from Stapf's Archives, 15, 1, 184, and by A. Zumbrock ; the clinical symptoms by Hering and Lippe.

Mind

Disinclination to think.

Inner head

Heat and confusion of head.
Dull drawing pain in right temporal region.

Sight and eyes

Itching about eyes.

Hearing and ears

Burning heat of inner and outer ear.

Upper face

Faceache.

Taste, speech, tongue

Bitter, rough taste, when smoking.

Inner mouth

Gangrenous aphthæ of children.

Palate and throat

Sensation of swelling deep down in throat.
Accumulation of mucus in throat.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

No appetite, especially early in the morning.
Thirst for hot tea during heat. θ Intermittent.
Aversion to smell of tobacco smoke.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Eructations : with bitter taste ; empty ; ineffectual.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Burning pressure in pit of stomach.
Slight tensive pressure in epigastric region, as after eating too much ; the concussion of every step taken is painfully felt in region of stomach.

Hypochondria

Uncomfortable pressure and tension in hypochondria, almost like incarcerated flatus, though associated with a feeling of hardness.

Abdomen and loins

Pressure and rumbling in abdomen.
Griping preceding morning stool.
Boils in the inguinal region.

Stools and rectum

Occasional diarrhœa, becoming gradually worse and more frequent, with backache and lassitude.
Constant slight urging, often with pain high up in rectum, gnawing in character.
Diarrhœa alternating with hard, lumpy stools.
Constipation ; stool hard, in pieces, covered with mucus.
Passes bright blood with or without stool, in large quantities, causing weakness.

Urinary organs

Soreness and burning in orifice of urethra after urinating.
Involuntary micturition.

Great fatigue and lassitude, with weariness in the limbs.
The whole day greatest degree of lassitude, had to lie down, but was not refreshed.

Horrible dreams, wakes up frightened.

In open air : sweat on back, while walking.

Fever

Anxious heat of whole body and slight sweat, followed by drowsiness.
Sweat on back when walking in open air, with chilliness, > when standing still.
Heat, with thirst from warm drinks. θ Intermittent.

Left : stitch in side.
Right : drawing in temporal region ; pain in shoulder-joint.

Sensations

As of swelling in throat.
Stitch : on left side.

Characteristic

Complaints from loss of blood or vital fluids (Carbo v., Caust., Cinch., Phos.).

The concussion of every step is painfully felt in region of stomach (Bry.).

Chill

With thirst for warm drinks (Ced., Sabad.—for warm drinks in prodrome, Eup.); slight when walking in the open air, which immediately disappeared on standing still, but returned after walking again.

Heat

With thirst and desire for warm drinks (Ced., Eup. purp.); anxious of the whole body, and a slight sweat followed by sleepiness.

Sweat

Slight, on the back, when walking in the open air. Profuse at night, drenching the clothes, but not debilitating.

The thirst and desire for warm drinks is as marked as under Cedron, and both remedies have proved very efficacious in the treatment of intermittents occurring in the lower Mississippi valley. The late Dr. Hardenstein, of Vicksburg, relied upon Cascarilla when he found this symptom present, and says it rarely failed to cure.
