Keynote

Traumatic affections: to secure union by first intention and prevent suppuration. In all cases of loss of soft parts when union cannot be effected by means of adhesive plaster. External wounds with or without loss of substance; torn and jagged looking woulds; post-surgical operation; to promote healthy granulation and prevent excessive suppuration and disfiguring scars. Traumatic and idiopathic neuroma (Cepa); neuritis from lacerated wounds (Hyper.); exhausted from loss of blood and excessive pain. Rupture of muscles or tendons; lacerations during labor; wounds penetrating articulations with loss of synovial fluids. Wounds: with sudden pain during febrile heat; constitutional tendency to erysipelas (Psor.); old, neglected, offensive; threatening gangrene (Sal. ac.). Ulcers: irritable, inflamed, sloughing, varicose; painful as if beaten (Arn.); excessive secretion of pus. Calendula is almost specific for clean, surgical cuts or lacerated wounds, to prevent excessive suppuration.

Relations

Complementary: Hep., Sal. ac. Similar: to, Hyper. in injuries to parts rich in sentient nerves where pain is excessive and out of all proportion to injury. Similar: to, Arn. in traumatism without laceration of soft tissue. Symp., Calc. p., for non-union of bones. Rhus, Ruta, strains or injuries of single muscles. Sal. ac. prevents excessive suppuration; gangrene. Sulph. ac. in painful, gangrenous wounds; said to destroy septic germs. Acts well in potency as in tincture, applied locally and my be administered internally at the same time.

Particularly useful in the dressing of torn or cut wounds, the parts being kept wet constantly with a weak solution. For concomitant complaints administer Calendula internally. A useful prophylactic for sphacelus in torn or cut wounds. Where she is torn by delivery of the child.

A most remarkable healing agent, applied locally. Useful for open wounds, parts that will not heal, ulcers, etc. Promotes healthy granulations and rapid healing by first intention. Hæmostatic after tooth extraction. Deafness. Catarrhal conditions. Neuroma. Constitutional tendency to erysipelas. Pain is excessive and out of all proportion to injury. Great disposition to take cold, especially in damp weather. Paralysis after apoplexy. Cancer, as an intercurrent remedy. Has remarkable power to produce local exudation and helps to make acrid discharge healthy and free. Cold hands.

Head

Extremely nervous; easily frightened; tearing headache; weight on brain. Submaxillary glands swollen, painful to touch. Pain in right side of neck. Lacerated scalp wounds.

Eyes

Injuries to eyes which tend to suppuration; after operations; blenorrhœa of lachrymal sac.

Ears

Deafness; worse in damp surroundings and with eczematous conditions. Hears best on a train, and distant sounds.

Nose

Coryza in one nostril; with much green discharge.

Stomach

Hunger immediately after nursing. Bulimia. Heartburn with horripilations. Nausea in chest. Vomiting. Sinking sensation. Epigastric distention.

Respiratory

Cough, with green expectoration, hoarseness; with distention of inguinal ring.

Female

Warts at the os externum. Menses suppressed, with cough. Chronic endocervicitis. Uterine hypertrophy, sensation of weight and fullness in pelvis; stretching and dragging in groin; pain on sudden movements. Os lower than natural. Menorrhagia.

Skin

Yellow; goose-flesh. Promotes favorable cicatrization, with least amount of suppuration. Slough, proud flesh, and raised edges. Superficial burns and scalds. Erysipelas (use topically).

Fever

Coldness, great sensitiveness to open air; shuddering in back, skin feels warm to touch. Heat in evening.

Modalities

Worse, in damp, heavy, cloudy weather.

Characteristics

Calendula belongs to the same family as those other great Vulneraries Arnica and Bellis perennis . The special kind of wounds indicating its use are lacerated wounds and suppurating wounds. It is the homœopathic antiseptic ─ it restores the vitality of an injured part, making it impregnable against the forces of putrefaction. Unlike Arnica it has no irritating property capable of producing erysipelas. It is therefore suitable to all cases of injury where the skin is broken. Jahr, who was in Paris during the Coup d'État of 1849, treated a number of cases of gun-shot wounds with comminuted bones, and saved several limbs by means of Calendula . It prevented suppuration and pyæmia. In some cases of carbuncle it acts with great promptitude, subduing pain and fever. In obstetric practice it is invaluable. The application of a sponge saturated with a hot solution of Calendula after delivery gives the greatest comfort to the patient. Hot Calendula lotions are generally preferable to cold, as they conserve the vitality of the injured parts. Hot Calendula fomentations, intermittently applied, are far better than poultices as applications to forming abscesses. If they do not abort the process they favour the maturation and ultimate healing. C. R. Crosby ( H. R ., xii, 370) gives it internally (in the 3x) as well as externally. He has also had excellent results from its use as a hot compress (an ounce to the pint) in pneumonia and other internal inflammations. It is an excellent hæmostatic in tooth-extractions. Calendula has not been largely proved, but very definite fever symptoms have been elicited, and cases of jaundice have been treated with it successfully. Some of the symptoms are Irritability; easily frightened; great tendency to start, nervousness hearing very acute. Drinking aggravates; also damp weather. Cooper gives this modality: < in cloudy weather. (The flowers close when a dark cloud passes over.) Drinking causes a shaking chill or creeping crawls; even during the heat. Very sensitive to cold air. Nodosities in breast. In Germany it is regarded as a "cancer cure." Almost all the symptoms make their appearance during the chilly stage of the fever; he feels most comfortable when walking about, or else when lying perfectly still. A correspondent of the Hom. World , "C. W." (1891), mentions that a friend of his who chewed for a few minutes a leaf of Calendula noticed that it entirely removed for some days a difficulty of passing water such as is commonly met with in old men. "C. W.," himself a pharmacist, noticed the following effect on himself when making the fresh-plant tincture: "There was such a feeling as if some overwhelming calamity was hovering over me as to be almost unbearable. Three years ago, just after making the tincture, my old enemy the gout nipped me in the middle of the spine, and in three days spoiled all my powers of walking, and then the dreadful feeling became very much exaggerated." His experience led him to conclude that Calendula has an action on the spinal cord.

Calendula contains much nitrogen and phosphoric acid. Antidoted by: Arn. Incompatible: Camph. Complementary: Hep. Compatible: Arn., Ars., Bry., Nit. ac., Phos., Rhus. Follows well: Ars. Is followed well by: Arn., Hep. Compare: Arn., Ars., Bry., Calc. sul., Carb. an., Carb. v., Ham., Hep., Hyper., Led., Nit. ac., Pho., Rhus, Ruta, Salic. ac., Sul. ac., Symph.

Mind

Great irritability; easily frightened; hearing acute. ─ Intense depression.

Head

Dulness of the head, as after a night's revel. ─ Heaviness of the head in the morning, as after a long illness. ─ Pressure and feeling of heaviness in the occiput. ─ Headache, and feeling of heat in the forehead after a meal. ─ Flushes of heat on the forehead, in the evening. ─ Inflammation of the white of the eyes, with pressure at times in the forehead, at times in the temples, only when lying down.

Eyes

Dryness and biting in the margins of the lids, as from smoke.

Ears

Hearing too acute; starts with a fright. ─ (Deafness < from drinking; < from damp weather. ─ Cooper.)

Mouth

Small vesicles in the corner of the mouth.

Throat

The submaxillary glands are painful to the touch, with sensation as if swollen; or actual swelling, and sensation as if ulcerated in the interior. ─ Drawing and tension in the submaxillary glands, when moving the head. ─ Pressure in the œsophagus during deglutition, from pain in the submaxillary glands. ─ Bitter-slimy taste in the throat, the food having a natural taste.

Stomach

Diminished appetite at dinner, although he relishes his food. ─ Hiccough when smoking.

Abdomen

Boring and digging deep in the umbilical region. ─ Sticking in the l. side of the abdomen, during movement, going off during rest. ─ Stool in the morning, accompanied with feverish chilliness, preceded by pinching and uneasiness in the abdomen.

Urinary Organs

Frequent micturition, with emission of pale, clear, hot, and even burning urine. ─ Tearing in the urethra during the chilliness.

Chest

Drawing pressure in l. side of chest, when standing, also in sternum, with stitches in r. side of chest, in evening when lying in bed.

Neck and Back

Tearing with pressure between the scapulæ. ─ Pain under the r. scapula as if ulcerated and bruised, with pressure. ─ Rheumatic drawing in the r. side of neck, < when bending the neck over to one side and when raising the arm.

Limbs

The axillary glands are painful to the touch. ─ Pressure and drawing tension in the hand and in the tarsal joints, during rest. ─ Tearing burning in the calf, when sitting. ─ Spasmodic drawing in the inner border of the foot, when sitting.

Generalities

Rheumatic drawing pains, only during motion. ─ The wound becomes raw and inflamed, is painful in the morning as if beaten, with stinging as if it would suppurate; the parts around the wound become red, with stinging in the wound during the febrile heat. ─ Great tendency to start, with great nervousness and extreme sensitiveness of hearing. ─ Drowsiness with ill-humour and delirium; restless night, constant waking, frequent micturition and drinking, and uneasiness in every position. ─ Almost all the symptoms make their appearance during the chilly stage of the fever, he feels most comfortable when walking or else in a state of perfect rest.

Fever

Coldness and great sensitiveness to the open air, the whole morning. ─ Shuddering in the back, with pressure in the region of the last true rib of l. side, and movements in the stomach and abdomen as if he would faint. ─ Shuddering and goose-flesh, although the skin feels warm to the touch. ─ Feverish chilliness in the hands and feet, the whole morning, with rheumatic drawing and pressure in the whole body, and pain in the ribs as if pressed together and bruised, after sitting. ─ Heat in the afternoon, with frequent thirst, chilliness and shiverings intermixed, particularly after drinking. ─ Heat in the evening, with coldness of the head and hands, intermingled with shivering, and accompanied with aversion to drinks. ─ Feeling of heat in the face, hands, and feet, after a meal, succeeded by thirst. ─ Great heat, in the evening when in bed, accompanied with moisture on the feet, which are burning. ─ Great heat the whole morning, with copious perspiration, feeling of qualmishness in the chest, and burning in the axillæ.

Right side of under lip lacerated from a kick of a newly shod horse ; healed without noticeable scar.

Teeth and gums

Dull, coarse stitches in middle of right side of abdomen, on moving ; they disappear during rest.

Stools and rectum

Inflammation, with lacerated hymen, from coitus or otherwise.

Voice stronger and deeper as soon as fever heat abates, in evening.
Injuries to air passages, of a suicidal or other nature, in form of cuts or lacerations.

Respiration

Great efforts made to inflate lower lobes of lungs, which were only successful when sitting up.
During inhalation : pressure in left side of chest.
Breathing easier after heat abates.

Inner chest and lungs

Pressure and oppression in left side of chest, in evening, when lying in bed.
Drawing pressure in left side of chest, when standing, during inspiration.
Pressive drawing pain in left side of chest and on breast bone, with stitches in right side of chest.
Feels squeamish in chest.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Pulse irregular and diminishing rapidly.
Pulse 160, fell in twelve hours to 120, in twelve more to 110. θ Burn.

Outer chest

Pressive drawing sensation on breast bone.
Ribs ache as if pressed together.

Neck and back

Rheumatic drawing in right side of neck, which is < on bending neck to right side, and on raising r. arm ; it extends to shoulder, in morning.
Pressive pain beneath right lower point of shoulder blade, with a sensation as in everything was suppurating and bruised, in afternoon.
Pressive drawing pain between shoulder blades.

Upper limbs

Axillæ very hot ; glands sore to touch.
Cold hands feel hot.
Compound fracture of left upper arm ; bone splinters protruding ; healed the stump after amputation.
(In sick :) Crushed index finger of right hand.
First phalanx of left index finger, both phalanges of ring finger completely torn away, likewise the flesh from tip of middle finger.
Tip of index finger cut away.
Middle finger sawed through near first joint, leaving tip hanging by skin.
Third finger cut to near centre.

Lower limbs

Tired weary feeling pervading lower limbs.
Pains in knees, while sitting ; in outer side, as if bruised.
Burning tearing in upper part of calf, while sitting.
Drawing, cramplike pain on inner border of sole, while sitting.

Food crushed, erysipelas and gangrene.

Time

Morning : head heavy after long illness ; stool with chill, preceded by griping and anxiety.
Forenoon ; intimation of nausea ; chilliness of hands and feet ; great heat.
Afternoon : heat, creeping chills ; frequent thirst.

Fever

Chill, fever and headache from mechanical injuries.

Nearly all symptoms appear with a chill.
Chilly whole morning, and very sensitive to air.
Chilliness in hands and feet, whole forenoon, without thirst, together with drawing, pressive, rheumatic pains through whole body ; ribs ache as if squeezed together and bruised, after sitting awhile, in morning.
He feels shivery and has a kind of gooseflesh, while skin seems warm to touch.
Shivering in back, with pressure on last rib on left side, with movements in region of stomach and abdomen, as if he would faint.
Sensation of heat in face, of hands and feet, after eating, and an hour afterwards thirst.
Great heat, whole forenoon, with much sweat ; he feels qualmish in chest, and shoulders are very hot.
Heat in afternoon, with creeping chills and frequent thirst ; drinking, however, causes each time shivering and a shaking chill.
The heat continues unabated after 5 p. m., but cold drinks cause shivering.
The heat abates after 5 p. m., without shivering, even in open air, head feels freer, breathing easier, and voice stronger and deeper.
Towards evening, a feeling of heat in otherwise cold hands and whole body, with creeping chills, without thirst and almost aversion to drinking, while sitting.
Great heat in evening, in bed ; he begins to sweat ; especially feet burn very much, and are inclined to sweat.

Locality and direction

Left side : pressure on last rib ; ear ached fearfully ; chest, pressure ; ribs, pressure.
Right : iliac, constant pain ; side of abdomen, dull, coarse stitches ; of neck, rheumatic drawing ; shoulder blade, pressive pain beneath ; leg and foot, ragged and deep ulcers.

Sensations

As if everything about right Shoulder blade was suppurating and bruised ; as if tired and weary ; lower limbs as if bruised ; as if she would fall from a height.
Anxiety and griping : in belly.
Drawing : cramplike pain on inner border of sole ; on breast bone ; in right side of neck.
Drawing tensive pain : of glands of left ramus of lower jaw.
Pressing : headache ; in throat ; on last rib, left side ; beneath shoulder blade.
Burning and stinging : in face.
Tearing : in urethra ; in upper part of calf.

Most violent pains after bandages are put on.
Sore to touch : glands.

Profuse, bad colored, stinking suppuration, hectic fever both bone and muscle wounded by a ball ; caries.
External wounds and lacerations, with (or without) loss of substance ; articular wounds and clean, surgical cuts.
In all cases with loss of soft parts, when no union can be effected by means of adhesive plaster.
Lacerated, torn and jagged looking flesh wounds.
Skin or flesh has come off in pieces.
Penetrating wounds in articulations with abundant flow of synovia.
Rupture of muscles or tendons.
Dislocations with injury to soft parts.
Chills, fever and headaches from mechanical injuries.

Skin

(OBS :) Jaundice.
(OBS :) Soft warts.
Stinging pain in wound during fever heat ; surroundings look very red.
A wound is painful, in morning, as if bruised and smarting, with picking in it and threatening to suppurate.
Wound raw and inflamed ; painful, as if beaten ; parts around wound become red, with stinging in wound during febrile heat ; constitutional tendency to erysipelas.
In charring of skin, after separation of slough.
Old, neglected wounds, maggoty and offensive ulcers : weak, indolent, irritable inflamed, sloughing, varicose, or hemorrhagic ; excessive secretion of pus ; Painful, as if beaten ; surrounding parts are red ; stinging during fever ;
< at night.
Abscesses ; when induration occurs after surgical operations, followed by suppuration, wound becomes raw and inflamed, is painful in morning as if beaten, with stinging, followed by throbbing, as if it would suppurate.
Hinders or prevents gangrene.

Girl, æt. 22, dreadfully mangled lower limbs by wheels of car. θ Flesh wounds.
Girl, æt. 22, robust, remarkably healthy, suffering from burn by camphene, maltreated by allopathy for six weeks, until pronounced past recovery.
A man, æt 42, for five years an ulcer on leg of a mercurio-syphilitic origin.

Relations

Contains a great deal of nitrogen and more phosphoric acid.
Antidotes : Arnica (pain in lacerated hand).
Compatible : Arnica, arsen., Bryon., Nitr. ac., Phosphor., Rhus tox ., administered internally as indicated ; before Arnica, Hepar ; after Arsen .
Incompatible : Camphor .
Complementary : Hepar (pyæmia).

General remarks : Calendula , like Salic. ac ., is useful in preventing excessive suppuration, and in preventing putridity, both keeping from wounds and sores septic germs. The odor of the flowers is disliked by
mosquitoes ; and the smoke of the burning plant will drive mice and lizards from houses.
