White Agaric (POLYPORUS OFFICINALE)

General

Quotidian intermittent fever. Sweat is light, and without relief. Night-sweat in phthisis.

Head

Feels light and hollow with deep frontal headache. Thick, yellow coating of tongue; teeth indented. Constant nausea.

Fever

Chilliness along spine, with frequent, hot flashes. Yawns and stretches when chilly. Severe aching in shoulders and joints and small of back. Profuse perspiration at night, with hectic chills and fever.

Skin

Hot and dry, especially in palms. Itching more between scapulæ and on forearms.

Relationship

Compare: Agaricin, active constituent of Polyporus officinale (phthisical and other enervating nightsweats 1-4 to 1-2 gr doses; also in chorea, in dilatation of heart with pulmonary Emphysema, fatty degeneration, profuse perspiration and erythema). Boletus luridus (Violent pain in epigastrium, urticaria tuberosa). Boletus satanus (dysentery, vomiting, great debility, cold extremities, spasm of extremities and face).

Characteristics

Burt proved the crude substance and the 3rd trituration. The gastro-enteric irritation common to the Fungi was very well marked. Motion < headache.

Relations

Mind

Very gloomy and despondent. ─ Irritated at the least trifle. ─ Absent-minded.

Head

Head feeling very light and hollow, with deep frontal headache and great faintness.

Eyes

Agglutination of eyelids every morning, with dull, aching pains in eyeballs.

Mouth

Teeth and gums very sore. ─ Tongue: white coat; thick yellow coat showing marks of teeth. ─ Taste: flat; coppery; unnatural, of all food; lost.

Stomach

Feeling in fauces as if would vomit. ─ Nausea and vomiting. ─ Great faintness at epigastrium.

Abdomen

Severe cutting pains in stomach every few minutes, with dull, aching distress in umbilicus, and loud rumbling in bowels all night. ─ Heavy dragging pains in liver, more in r. lobe. ─ Dull, burning distress; drawing; aching in r. lobe of liver with frontal Headache. ─ Sharp cutting pains in r. lobe of liver and whole dorsal region on full inspiration. ─ Sharp cutting pains near gall-bladder. ─ Burning distress in region of gall-bladder all afternoon, with sharp pains in stomach and heavy aching in whole liver, esp. r. lobe. ─ Severe, dull, aching distress just below stomach, causing great faintness.

Stool

Straining after stool. ─ Stool: Thin, yellow papescent; mixed with something looking like oil in large and small drops; followed by aching in liver and umbilicus. ─ Black, lumpy, dry stools mixed with bile and mucus. ─ Stools of bile, mucus, and blood, with high fever. ─ Lienteria.

Back

Dull, aching distress in back and legs.

Generalities

Great restlessness after midnight. ─ Faintness after stool. ─ Aching distress in all joints.

Fever

Chilliness along spine with frequent hot flashes of fever. ─ Disposition to yawn and stretch when chilly. ─ Face hot and flushed with severe frontal headache. ─ Hands hot and dry. ─ Waking at midnight two different nights in a profuse perspiration.

Mind

Low-spirited, gloomy, desponding, irritable.
Absence of mind and loss of memory.

Sensorium

Head feels light and hollow, with deep frontal headache and much faintness ; in malarial intermittents.
Congestion of blood to head with vertigo.

Inner head

Headache, dull, frontal, with fever.
Dull aching pain in head.
Headache with qualmishness.
Sick-headache : from organic lesion of liver ; every month, with chilliness along spine.
Headache in intermittent, remittent or bilious fevers.
Periodical headache, coming on at regular hour each day.

Upper face

Facial neuralgia, of a periodical character ; from torpid liver.
Weak and languid ; poor appetite ; every day for the last week, at 12 M., burning pain in upper teeth, left side of jaw, also in left temple ; pain intense, lasts until midnight, when it gradually passes off ; feels it slightly through forenoon. θ Intermittent neuralgia.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste : bitter, coppery, nauseous.
Tongue : coated ; white ; yellow ; thickly yellow.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Perfect loss of appetite ; pale, anæmic ; chronic malaria.
Sometimes has ravenous appetite ; but more often none.
Desire for sour things, which relieve.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Great faintness or all gone feeling in epigastric region.
Burning distress in stomach, with dragging pains in liver.

Hypochondria

Severe aching pains in region of liver, extending over whole dorsal region ; portal congestion.
Pain in liver, with jaundice of skin and great lassitude.
Hepatic complaints, especially jaundice.

Abdomen and loins

Loud rumbling in bowels.
Constant distress in region of umbilicus, with a feeling as if small intestines were being tied in knots ; summer diarrhœa.
Pain in abdomen between stomach and navel.

Stools and rectum

Loose stool.
Sudden distress in hypogastric region, with great desire for stool ; light-colored, papescent stool, followed by dragging pains in liver and sinking in epigastrium.
Stools of pure mucus, or mucus, blood and bile, with great faintness and distress in solar plexus after stool.
Stools run from bowels with great force, composed of bile, mucus and black fecal matter, preceded by great burning pain and distress in epigastrium, right lobe of liver, and umbilicus and followed by symptoms of portal congestion.
Lienteria ; stools undigested ; chronic anæmia.
Dysentery, with intermittent fever, in a young lady ; passages of pure blood and a little mucus every half hour, with severe tenesmus and colicky pains in hypogastrium.
Intermittent diarrhœa and dysentery.
Chronic diarrhœa and dysentery.
Constipation, dull headache and great languor.

Urinary organs

Urine very high colored and scanty, bilious.

Inner chest and lungs

Phthisis, with copious night sweats and watery diarrhœa.

Neck and back

Severe headache.
Dull aching pain in back and hips.

Lower limbs

Pain in knees and ankles.

Great aching distress in all the large joints.
Severe pains in arms and legs.

Rest. position. motion

Can hardly stand up, knees are so weak.

Nerves

Great languor with severe aching pains in back, large joints and bones of legs ; yawns and stretches.
Feels weak and depressed and indisposed to any exertion, physical or mental.
Great debility at times ; can hardly stand up, knees are so weak.

Sleep

Disposition to yawn and stretch, with chilliness.
Restless night ; sleep disturbed by dreams, very restless and uneasy all night.

Time

Forenoon : neuralgia slight.
Night : sweat ; restless ; uneasy ; fever and distress.
After midnight : profuse sweat.

Temperature and weather

Cannot bear open air : chilliness.
Damp change : causes cold.

Fever

Cannot bear the open air ; it makes him so chilly ; takes cold from least damp change.
Chilliness, with disposition to yawn and stretch.
Frequent creeping chills along spine, between shoulder-blades up back to nape of neck.
Chills commencing in back, between shoulder blades.
Coldness of nose, hands and feet.
Chills creeping along spine, intermingled with hot flashes.
Chill alternates with fever several times a day.
Skin hot and dry ; especially palms of hands ; face hot and flushed.

Ague of two years duration, contracted while in army ; had been drugged with quinine, opium and mercurials ; chills, fever and sweat every other day ; great thirst between paroxysms ; very sick at stomach ; vomiting ; no appetite ; pain in back ; pain in bones ; pulse 115 ; restless and nervous.
Chill light and short ; fever long and followed by perspiration ; in some cases perspiration is copious.
Obstinate intermittent fevers < by exposure and neglect or abuse of quinine.
Intermission very short ; almost continued fever.
During apyrexia : headache ; bitter taste in mouth ; tongue coated white or yellow ; loss of appetite ; more or less pains in abdominal viscera, especially liver, with great lassitude.

Type

Quotidian; tertian. Sporadic or endemic, of spring, summer, winter. Rarely called for in autumn.

Time

5, 10 and 11 A. M.,—1, 3, 4, 3 to 4 and 9 P. M.

Prodrome

Great languor and aching in the large joints.

Chill

Chills, with slight thirst, alternate with heat several times a day. Chilliness with disposition to yawn and stretch. Frequent creeping chills along the spine between the shoulder-blades, up the back to nape of neck, intermingled with hot flushes (chills along the spine, running up the back in successive waves, Gels.). Chills commencing in the back between the shoulder-blades (Caps.). Coldness of nose, hands and feet. Great languor, with severe aching pains in back, large joints, and bones of legs (Eup., Pod.); yawns and stretches. Severe chills, lasting two hours, followed by heat and perspiration. Unusual chilliness when the open air is encountered, with icy coldness of the nose.

Heat

With thirst; constant, lasting all night (after evening chill, Lyc., Puls., Rhus). Skin extremely hot and dry. Face hot and flushed, with prickly sensation (Nit. ac.); hands, palms, feet hot and dry. Thirst not excessive, nausea and vomiting often occur during heat.

Sweat

Profuse after midnight; sweat all night; mild in recent, profuse in old chronic cases.

Tongue

Coated white; or yellow thick coat, with red tip. Taste, bitter, coppery. Loss of appetite. Desire for sour things, which always relieved symptom.

Apyrexia

Pain in liver, with jaundice of the skin and great lassitude. Pain in abdomen between stomach and navel; loud rumbling in the bowels. Constipation, dull headache and great languor; or congestion of blood to the head with vertigo. Intermission very short; fever almost continuous in severe cases, and apt to become remittent.

Best adapted to old, long standing cases that have been saturated with Quinine, and remained proof against all febrifuges.
