General

A remedy for catarrhal states. Hay-fever.

Head

Itching; falling off of hair; roots of hair painful. Pustules. Pain in occiput, extends to right ciliary region. Deep seated pain in sides of head.

Ears

Burning and itching in auditory canals. Eczema behind ears.

Nose

Hay-fever begins with burning and itching of palate and conjunctiva. Annoying itching in the nostrils and roof of the mouth (Wyethia). Coryza; loss of smell (Nat mur). Sneezing, itching of nostrils.

Mouth

Burning and itching; bleeding of gums. Ulcers and exfoliations in the commissures. Fissures in tongue.

Stomach

Coldness in stomach. Longing for acids.

Abdomen

Movement as from something alive. Flatulence pain at pubic region.

Stool

Greenish. Burning at anus. Diarrhœa of nursing children (Cham; Calc phos).

Urine

Burning. Red sediment (Lyc).

Male

Pain in spermatic cord after embrace.

Female

Menses too early and profuse. Neuralgic pains from face to shoulders and pubis. Desire with vaginal pruritus.

Respiratory

Dyspnœa; cough; bluish expectoration. Burning and pain in nipples.

Extremities

Itching, burning; œdema of hands and feet. Burning and swelling of soles. Copious and offensive sweat of feet.

Skin

Eczema; itching and crawling, especially of chest, upper extremities. Fissures in fingers and heels.

Characteristics

Arundo is a reedy grass and the tincture is made from the root-shoots. ─ It has not been much tested clinically, but its chief sphere has been proved to be in catarrhal conditions. Constant (serous) diarrhœa of nursing or teething children. Urine deposits much red sand. Mouth excoriated. Thirst. Coryza and snuffling. Scrofulous ophthalmia. Purulent discharge from the ear. Arundo has cured a case of hay-fever, the symptoms beginning with "burning and itching of palate and conjunctiva." Chagon is the authority for the pathogenesis.

Head

Eyes

Ophthalmia in children. ─ Blepharitis. ─ Undulating luminous openings appear wherever he looks. ─ Fluttering luminous objects. ─ Cannot look up. ─ Pricking, itching, burning in conjunctiva.

Ears

Burning itching in auditory canals, coincide with pain in sublingual glands. ─ The inflammation of ears begins with shooting pains in concha, extends to external meatus; finally with itching and discharge of blood. ─ Purulent discharge from ears. ─ Eczema behind ears. ─ Sound of little bells in ears.

Nose

Pain at root of nose. ─ Coryza with snuffling. ─ In the beginning water runs from nose, later green mucus and thick, white, slimy masses; with sneezing, pieces of indurated greenish mucus.

Face

Erysipelas on r. cheek. ─ Pricking in point of chin.

Mouth

Mouth excoriated. ─ Pains in sublingual glands. ─ Salivation. ─ Burning and itching of palate.

Stomach

Wants to belch but cannot. ─ Coldness in stomach.

Abdomen

Pain in liver. ─ Pricking in spleen. ─ Acute pain at umbilicus.

Stool and Anus

Stools at first hard, soon become loose. ─ Constant diarrhœa (serous) of nursing or teething children. ─ Greenish stools. ─ Stools followed by burning at anus. ─ Pricking at anus. ─ Piles and prolapse of rectum.

Urinary Organs

Much red sand in urine. ─ After urinating, weight; burning itching in urethra.

Male Sexual Organs

Sexual desire; lascivious ideas; frequent erections. ─ Pain in spermatic cords after coitus. ─ Difficult breathing after coitus.

Female Sexual Organs

Uterine catarrh. ─ Violent desire for coition; or aversion to it. ─ Early, profuse, long-lasting menses; blood dark clotted. ─ Pains start from l. side of jaw, along l. eyebrow, extending to shoulders and loins and finally settling on pubis, burning like fire. ─ Excessive secretion of milk causes pain in l. breast.

Respiratory Organs

Catarrhal cough. ─ Sputa at first bluish, then white, and so alternately. ─ After expectorating bruised feeling in pit of throat. ─ After cough: burning in epigastrium; larynx obstructed. ─ Accumulation of mucus in bronchi causes anxiety.

Neck and Back

Startings in neck; crawling on l. side of it. ─ Acute pain under l. scapula.

Limbs

Œdema of limbs. ─ Pain in limbs as if tightly bandaged.

Mind

Sensorium

Vertigo on getting out of bed.

Inner head

Deep-seated pain towards frontal lobes and sides.
Painful undulation in frontal region.

Pain in right temple to top of head, makes sleepy.
Sudden formicating pains through temples.
Formication and stupefying pain on top of head, going down to neck.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Desire to belch, but cannot.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Coldness in stomach.

Respiration

Whistling, etc., in bronchi when breathing.
Short, difficult breathing ; also during coition, or on walking, going up-stairs.
Suffocative paroxysm.
Attacks of dyspnœa, with diffuse sweat.

Cough

Catarrhal cough.
Sputa in beginning bluish, then white, and so alternately.
After expectorating, bruised feeling in pit of throat.
Rattling during cough.
After cough, burning in hypogastrium.
After coughing, larynx obstructed, prevents wind and sputa from coming up, causing afterwards vomiting of frothy, viscid matter.
Cough at noon, midday and evenings.
Dry cough evenings, with pains in pit of stomach, with viscid vomiting ; followed by burning at pit of throat.
Expectoration difficult, early mornings.
Sputa whitish ; round, ash-colored clots.

Inner chest and lungs

Accumulation of mucus in bronchi causes anxiety.

Pulse rises to 90, later lessening.

Feverish paroxysm, with burning pain and formication all over body.
Febrile paroxysm, with nausea, coldness, thirst, pain in bowels and salivation.
Excessive heat at night ; nightly fever.
A sensation of burning heat, together with numerous prickings, rises from loins, passes over shoulders and then invades middle of head and face, preceded by perspiration, in women.
Constant sensation of heat ; is burnt in sun and frozen in shade.

Skin

Feeling as of an insect crawling over loins, shoulders, and sometimes entire surface of body.
Redness of skin, like a birth mark.
Skin in children turns blue at height of fever.
Eruptions resembling itch on breast, in children, and also behind ears.
Itching papular eruption in children.
Erysipelas on various parts of body.
Itching miliary eruption on loins.
Pustules like of scabies, with intolerable itching, discharge when opened by friction a watery fluid.
Suppurating pimples on chest and arms.

Relations

No gramineæ are known by their morbid influence, except some poisoning symptoms of Lolium .
Ananth . has been proved by Houat. Sacch. off . is well known by provings and cures, but has no similarity with any tincture of roots.
The disjunctive similars are principally Sulphur, Calc. ost ., and Lycop ., one of the principal family in our armamentarium.
