General

All spider poisons powerfully affect the nervous system (See tarentula, Mygale, etc).

All symptoms of Aranea are characterized by periodicity, and coldness, and great susceptibility to dampness. It is the remedy for the constitution favorable to malarial poisoning, where every damp day or place favors chilliness. Patient feels cold to the very bones. Coldness not relieved by anything. Feeling as if parts were enlarged and heavier. Wake up at night with hands feeling twice their natural size. Spleen swollen. Hydrogenoid Constitution, i.e, Abnormal sensitiveness to damp and cold, inability to live near fresh water, lakes, rivers, etc, or in damp, chilly places (Nat. Sulph. Thuja).

Head

Pain in right trifacial nerve from periphery inwards. Confusion; better by smoking in open air. Heat and flickering in eyes; worse in damp weather. Sudden violent pain in teeth at night immediately after lying down.

Female

Menses too early, too copious. Distention of abdomen. Lumbo-abdominal neuralgia.

Chest

Pain in intercostal nerve from nerve endings to spine. Bright red hæmorrhage from lungs (Millefol; Ferr phos).

Stomach

Cramps after eating a little; epigastrium painful to pressure.

Abdomen

Enlarged spleen. Colic returns same hours. Heaviness in lower abdomen, as of a stone. Diarrhœa. Arms and legs feel as if asleep.

Extremities

Bone-pains in extremities. Pain in os calcis. Sensation of swelling, and of parts going to sleep.

Sleep

Restless and waking, as if hands and forearms were swollen and heavy.

Fever

Coldness, with pain in long bones, and feeling of stone in abdomen at the same hour daily. Chilly day and night; always worse during rain.

Modalities

Worse, damp weather; late in afternoon, and at midnight. Better, smoking tobacco.

Relationship

Tela aranearum-Spider's web.--Cardiac sleeplessness, increased muscular energy. Excitement and nervous agitation in febrile states. Dry asthma, harassing coughs; periodic headaches with extreme nervous erethism. Obstinate intermittents. Acts immediately on arterial system, pulse full, strong, compressible.

Lowers pulse rate frequency. Masked periodical diseases, hectic, broken down patients. Symptoms come on suddenly with cool, clammy skin. Numbness of hands and legs when at rest. Continued chilliness.

Leaders

Another spider which Grauvogl classed with his so-called hydrogenoid remedies, i. e., the patient always suffered, with whatever she had, most in wet weather. It is well to remember such positive modalities, for it may narrow down the case to a few remedies from which our curative must be chosen; for instance -Aranea, Natrum sulphuricum, Dulcamara, Nux moschata, Rhus toxicodendron, Rhododendron- all have these wet weather aggravations, and we will be apt to find our remedy there if the patient is characteristically worse in wet weather.

Head

Headache, relieved by smoking tobacco and going out in the open air.

Mouth

Painfulness of all the teeth as soon as he goes to bed in the evening. Bitter taste, with coated tongue ; relieved by smoking.

Abdomen

Swelling of the spleen (after intermittent fever was suppressed by Quinine).

Sexual Organs

Women. Catamenia too early, too profuse, of too duration. Metrorrhagia ; bright-colored blood.

Upper. Sensation on the ring and little fingers, as if they were asleep. Lower. Boring and digging in the os calcis, continuing on moving the foot, and disappearing by continuing the motion. Ulcer on the left heel.

As soon as he lies down at night a violent pain in all the teeth.

Hæmorrhages from all the organs.

Fever

Chilliness every day at the same hour (precisely), with sleeplessness, no heat or perspiration following. Chilliness day and night, even during the summer ; worse during rain. Chill and other symptoms are worse every other day, at precisely the same hours.

Conditions

Aggravation in wet habitations and from being on the water. -Daily, at precisely the same hour.

Characteristics

Grauvogl is our chief authority for the use of Aranea . It is one of the leading remedies for the hydrogenoid constitution as described by him, and for intermittent fevers and other intermittent affections. By hydrogenoid constitution he meant abnormal sensitiveness to damp and cold; and inability to live near fresh water, either rivers or lakes, or in damp, chilly places. This gives the < from bathing; from damp weather; damp localities, or habitations; < drawing in cold air. Chilliness followed by little or no fever. Chill and neuralgic attacks at the same hour every day, every other day, week, month, or regular period. Attacks are violent and sudden. Sensation of swelling in many parts, head, face, hands; of numbness; of coldness as if bones were made of ice. Hæmorrhages from many parts; from wounds. Punctured wounds. Exhaustion. Pains like electric currents. Great desire to lie down; many symptoms > lying down. Toothache < night after lying down. On lying down in bed and touching bed-clothes, whether linen or wool, has a chill. Many symptoms occur on the right side. Chill not > by external warmth; no sweat with fevers.

Head

Eyes

Glimmering and glittering before eyes; preceding headache. ─ Burning; stinging; shooting in eyes.

Teeth

Painfulness of all the teeth as soon as he goes to bed in the evening. ─ Sharp sensation of cold in the teeth (incisive) every day at the same hour. ─ Sensitive, cold sensation in r. lower incisors, esp. on drawing in air; came on again next day at same hour. ─ Sudden violent pains in teeth of whole upper and lower jaw, at night, immediately after lying down.

Mouth

Instantly a painful sensation, as though arising from several points, darted along the tongue, painfully affecting tongue, jaws, and head; the effect was instantaneous, like a shock from an electric battery. ─ Tongue seemed almost paralysed, utterance thick and heavy, and the pains at root of tongue and in lower jaw, esp. at joint, most excruciating. ─ Bitter taste, with coated tongue; relieved by smoking.

Stomach

Thirst during the fever and during the greater part of the other sufferings. ─ Dejection and lassitude, with thirst. ─ Coryza, with thirst. ─ Eating causes headache and spasms. ─ Vomiting, with fever. ─ Epigastrium painful to pressure.

Abdomen

Swelling of the spleen (after intermittent fever was suppressed by Quinine). ─ Enlarged spleen with chilliness. ─ Fulness and heaviness in the abdomen as from a stone, with sensation of sinking in the epigastrium. ─ Borborygmi in the abdomen, and heaviness in the thighs, every day at the same hour. ─ Colic, with shuddering towards evening.

Stool

Diarrhœa; arms and legs as if asleep. ─ Stools watery, with great rumbling in bowels as if of fermentation. ─ Liquid, difficult evacuation, with colic, which is ameliorated by friction on the abdomen.

Female Sexual Organs

Dysmenia, spasms commencing in stomach. ─ Catamenia too early, too frequent, too profuse, of too long duration. ─ Periods eight days too early, too strong, and too copious. ─ Metrorrhagia; bright-coloured blood. ─ Discharge of viscid mucus from the vagina. ─ Viscous leucorrhœa.

Respiratory Organs

Hæmoptysis. ─ Violent hæmoptysis in anæmic and debilitated subjects.

Upper Limbs

Numbness of parts supplied by ulnar nerve. ─ Dull, penetrating pains in the bones and in all parts of the body, esp. in the humerus and the forearm. ─ At night a sensation as if the hands and forearms were larger and heavier. ─ Sensation on the ring and little fingers as if they were asleep.

Lower Limbs

Boring and digging in the r. tibia and os calcis, continuing on moving the foot, and disappearing by continuing the motion. ─ Ulcer on the l. heel.

Generalities

Hæmorrhages from all the organs. ─ Neuralgic pains, most on r. side, > by hard pressure, < at menstrual period, esp. before, but still during whole cycle; < 12 at night, unbearable, driving her out of bed; < 3 to 8 p.m.; aggravations recurring like clockwork; menses every three weeks. ─ Great exhaustion and lassitude. ─ Desires to keep constantly moving when sitting. ─ Subsultus tendinum. ─ Catalepsy; periodic headache; < in damp weather.

Sleep

As soon as he lies down at night a violent pain in all his teeth. ─ Restless sleep with frequent waking. ─ Restless; on awaking, some part of the body feels as if it were swollen.

Fever

Before chill: cutting cramp in stomach; vomiting; backache. ─ Cold all the time, cannot get warm; chilly as if bones made of ice even in summer; < during rain. ─ Chilliness after being in water. ─ Chill with clock-like regularity; as clock strikes four daily. ─ Thirst, fever and sweat may be absent. ─ Chill every other day at precisely the same hour. ─ During chill: pains in head, stomach, knees. ─ Afterwards: vomiting. ─ During heat: headache (but less violent than during chill), with drowsiness. ─ After heat: vomiting and prostration; lies as if dead; stinging in eyes. ─ Sweat absent; sweat without thirst; sweat with thirst.

Glimmering and glittering before eyes when reading or writing, which < headache.

Thick mist before eyes ; so tired she thought she would drop.
Disagreeable trembling in eyes ; reading, writing, < headache, with heat in eyes and forehead.
Burning in eyes, with heat in face and headache.

Hearing and ears

Pinching pressure in right ear and parotid gland, shifting to right side, from up-down.
Affection of ears in dogs ; they shake their heads until the ears are bloody.

Smell and nose

Coryza with thirst ; tertian coryza.
Epistaxis.

Upper face

Dejected countenance and pale face ; dark circles under eyes ; lips blanched ; dull expression of eyes ; confusion of head ; deep melancholy ; malaise, with constant desire to lie down. θ Spasmodic
pains in stomach.
Face pale and sunken. θ Dysmenorrhoea.
Cheeks feel as if swollen. θ Toothache.
Heat in forehead and face. θ Headache.
Burning heat in face, forehead and eyes, with headache.

Lower face

Lips colorless. θ Dysmenorrhoea.

Teeth and gums

Right lower incisors feel cold and are sensitive, especially on drawing in air ; returns each day at same hour.
Pinching, pressing pain in upper incisors, regularly from 9 A. M. to 7 P. M. ; leaving a sensitiveness and cold feeling on drawing in air ; sensation as if gum or cheek were swollen.
Sudden violent pains in teeth of upper and lower jaw at night, immediately after lying down.
Toothache > by smoking tobacco ; < by humidity, at night, and after lying down.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste : bitter, > by smoking ; nauseous, bitter, with coated tongue ; unpleasant after milk.
Tip of tongue slightly red. θ Ague.

Palate and throat

Stitches in palate and larynx.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Anorexia. θ Intermittent.
Thirst during fever and with all other symptoms.

Eating and drinking

After eating : confusion of head, with lassitude.
After eating a few spoonfuls of soup, a crawling sensation over whole body.
At dinner, after first spoonful of soup, violent spasmodic bellyache with anxiety ; oppression of chest and repeated gaping. θ Dysmenorrhoea.
She had no appetite and was afraid to eat, as it increased the complaints in the night.
After milk, unpleasant taste.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

Vomits everything ; has passed no urine in two days ; backache, preventing sleep.
Vomiting after chill and after heat. θ Intermittent.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Cutting in stomach, and spasmodic pain, with vomiting before chill. θ Intermittent.
Burning in stomach during chill. θ Ague.
After eating a very little food, violent convulsive pains in stomach, nausea, oppression of chest and repeated gaping.
Cramps in stomach, commencing during a meal, with great anxiety, pressure in chest, and frequent yawning ; spasm at first confined to stomach, gradually becomes general, with trembling of whole body, spasmodic motions, and desire to keep constantly moving when sitting.

Hypochondria

Epigastrium painful to pressure. θ Ague.
Swelling of spleen, after checked intermittent fever with quinine ; < in damp weather and exposure to damp walls.
Enlarged spleen, in man subject to ague, constantly chilly, < when it rained.

Abdomen and loins

Sensation of heaviness and fulness in lower bowels as if a stone was lying there, with an unpleasant feeling of faintness in pit of stomach ; gnawing and griping in abdomen ; returns daily at the same hour.
Abdominal complaints with shuddering, towards evening ; sensation of heaviness, snapping in belly, with unpleasant squeamishness in pit of stomach.
Colic, griping pains, sensation of heaviness in lower abdomen and feeling of faintness in epigastrium.
Colic recurs daily at same hour, with feeling as if arms and legs were asleep.
Every morning about 4 o'clock severe abdominal pains with loud borborygmi, followed by two or three small liquid stools, with sensation of numbness in upper and lower extremities, after that sleeps quietly until about 8 A. M., but feels tired and used up all day ; no appetite, and
fear of eating on account of pains during digestion. θ Colic after a cold.
Intermitting colic ; flatulency.
Violent pain in abdomen with great rumbling.
Flatulency, with heaviness in thighs, each day at same hour.

Stools and rectum

Bowels which were bound 4 or 5 days, move daily.
Diarrhœa, stools occur with great violence.
Diarrhœa, stools thin fluid, with pain in abdomen, > by rubbing with hand ; stool passed only partly with straining, and a half hour later, fermentation in abdomen.
Pain in bowels and diarrhœa regularly every morning at 2 o'clock, with colicky pains and great rumbling in belly. θ Diarrhœa.
Diarrhœa, arms and legs feel as if asleep.

Urinary organs

Waits long to urinate ; no energy ; sore on either side of bladder.
Awakens with desire to urinate, but nothing passes ; no burning or urging, but sometimes severe pain from perineum to glans penis.
Constant desire to pass water, but cannot ; fearful pain along urethra from glans.
Urine dark colored.

Male sexual organs

Produced a boil on left side of penis, near pubes.

Female sexual organs

Metrorrhagia ; bright red.
Dysmenorrhoea ; spasms commencing in stomach.
Menses 8 days too early, too long lasting and too copious.
Courses irregular ; either too late or too early ; face pale and sunken ; dark circles under eyes ; dull expression of eyes ; bloodless lips ; melancholy features ; general debility with constant desire to lie in bed ; sensation of formication all
over body ; about noon, after eating only a few spoonfuls of soup, violent convulsive pains in stomach, with anxiety, nausea, oppression of chest, and constant yawning. Spasmodic affection of stomach soon spreads all over body, with trembling, so that she could not remain quiet in any

Respiration

Chest feels constantly so oppressed that a walk across his room puts him out of breath. θ Enlarged spleen.
Respiration very short, raised the right side of thorax only, 30 in minute, could be heard at the very apex of the lung only.

Cough

Cough with bloody sputa.

Inner chest and lungs

Oppression of chest, nausea and gaping, with convulsive pains in stomach after eating.
Expectoration bloody ; hæmoptysis among subjects weak and anemic through privation of all kinds, and dyspeptics.
Violent hemorrhages from lungs.

Heart, pulse and circulation

The heart was pressed to the right, beat feebly, 98 in a minute. θ Enlargement of spleen.

Neck and back

Excruciating neuralgia along spinal nerves.
Jerking in back and left arm with vertigo, blackness before eyes and falling down.
Back so painful she cannot sleep ; passes no urine.
Pain in back before and after chill. θ Intermittent fever.

Upper limbs

Every night for several years, distressing sensation as if hands and arms were enormously swollen, in very nervous woman ; apprehension so strong that she often struck a light to ascertain whether it was so or not.
Forearms and hands so heavy that he imagines he cannot lift them.
Pains in bones, dull, digging in all parts of body, more in humerus, forearm and fingers.
Ring and little fingers of both hands feel as if they had gone to sleep ; formication.
Fibrillar twitching in muscles of left upper arm.
Quivering, twitching in muscles of left upper arm, afternoon.

Lower limbs

Heavy feeling in thighs, they can hardly be carried forward ; confusion of head ; heaviness in abdomen.
Stitches through knee with the chill, coming and going suddenly. θ Ague.
Feet feel heavy, with weariness.
Boring in right os calcis when first moving foot ; disappears from continued motion.
Ulcer on left heel.
Caries or gangrene ; pains < and > periodically.

Limbs in general

Arms and legs feel as if asleep. θ Diarrhœa.
At times dull, digging bone-pains.
Early in morning and at intervals during day, dull digging pains in right humerus, radius, ulna and tibia.
Pains in limbs, great inward soreness with chill ; pain from right side up into shoulder-blade. θ Intermittent fever.

Lying down : desire to lie down ; vertigo > ; dullness and pressure in head > ; toothache < ; pain in stomach > ; aversion to leaving bed ; must lie down ; lies as if dead.

Spasms in abdomen changing into general convulsions of whole body, during which she was obliged to move to and fro on her feet continuously, while the pain in belly continued and her consciousness was slightly depressed. θ Dysmenorrhoea.

Sleep

Mrs. P., suffering with chronic liver complaint, was taken suddenly with violent chills at 9 AM. on 21st of March.

Characteristic

Headache and confusion of the head, < by smoking, and ceases entirely in the open air (Tab.).

Sudden violent pains in the teeth of the whole upper and lower jaws, at night, immediately after lying down.

Toothache every day at same hour.

Aggravation

In cold rainy weather; damp dwellings; cold bathing; sleeping in damp wet rooms; lying down.

Amelioration

From tobacco smoke; in the open air.

Type

Quotidian, tertian. Remarkable periodicity in every type. Paludal origin; pernicious; dengue.

Time

At precisely same hour, every day, or every other day (Ced., Sabad.). Great regularity of paroxysm.

Cause

Rheumatic exposure: getting wet; working in the rain; working while standing in water (Ant. t., Cal., Led., Rhus); from living or working in basements; working in cellars or underground places (Ars.).

Chill

Long-lasting, often 24 hours; chill predominates. Constant chilly feeling, worse on rainy, cold days; from bathing with cold water; from damp dwellings. Chill as soon as he touches the cold sheets of the bed, followed by heat but no sweat. Chill violent, shaking; severe internal coldness as if frozen (Helod.). Chilly all the time, day and night, in midsummer. Bone pains for four weeks; fever attacks, consisting almost wholly of coldness. Chill without heat, sweat or thirst. Headache, which ceases entirely in the open air. Great exhaustion; lassitude. Painful feeling of coldness in lower incisors every day at same hour.

Heat

Slight, preceded by chill. Evening heat, with fullness and heaviness in epigastrium as from a stone; qualmishness in pit of stomach, and heaviness of the thighs so that she is scarcely able to drag her limbs along. Forearms and hands so heavy that he imagines he cannot lift them. This stage often wanting.

Sweat

Wanting.

Tongue

Slightly coated; taste, nauseous, bitter, > by smoking.

Apyrexia

Clear. Spleen enlarged. Menses eight days too early, too strong and too copious.

The paroxysm of Aranea is often unattended by either heat or sweat consisting only of coldness, which is persistent and severe, and not > by anything. It is usually without thirst in any stage; if any thirst, usually during the heat.

A CASE.—A teamster 43 years old, 6 feet 2 inches in height, and well developed, never been sick before, slept on some straw on the bar-room floor in Frankfurt, on a winter night. In the morning felt stiff in his limbs, tired and sick. Chill began at 7 p. m., and lasted till precisely 8 in the morning, every day at same hour, without heat or sweat, with cough, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, and great exhaustion, which distressed him most because it interfered with his occupation. Being yet unskilled in Homeopathy, and not having the least confidence in it in fever and ague, I gave him two-grain doses of Quinine every two hours at first, then every hour during the day, until he had taken forty powders without the least improvement; on the contrary, his general weakness had increased. I now consulted the original provings, and found that according to the law of similarity Aranea diadema must be the remedy. He received five drops of second dec. attenuation every hour. Next day the patient exclaimed: "Now you have hit the right medicine; after the second hour I felt warmth again in my whole body, and the first time for three weeks I slept some hours at night again, without any chill." The cure was complete in six days, and for seventeen years he had no relapse.—GRAUVOGL, p. 204.

Like many of our colleagues of the present day, Grauvogl's lack of confidence in homeopathic treatment of fever and ague (in his early investigations) was only equaled by his imperfect knowl- edge (at that time) of the true curative sphere of Quinine in the same disease. Here was a fever with chill prolonged and pre- dominant; heat and sweat absent. It could never be cured by

Quinine, which has all three stages, but particularly heat and sweat, prominently developed. Possibly, owing to its rheumatic character, Quinine would not seem even to suppress it, and there certainly was enough given (80 grs.) to fairly test its suppressing power.

CASE NO. II.—A tall, robust, heavily bearded man who, from the nature of his business, was exposed to all sorts of weather. For weeks past, though feeling tolerably well throughout the day, attending regularly to his daily round of duties, every night, as soon as he stepped into bed, he was seized with a severe chill which lasted perhaps for two hours, followed by heat but no sweat. Thinking the cold sheets upon which he lay had some- thing to do with it he substituted blankets, but without improvement.

Aranea with its remarkable symptoms, "toothache every day at same hour" loomed up before me, and here was a similar one, "Chill as soon as he touches the bed," and Aranea 30, a dose night and morning for four days.
