Keynote

For the lymphatic constitution. Absent-minded, reduced power of insight; cannot recollect; has to read a sentence twice before he can comprehend (Lyc., Phos. ac., Sep.). "Old sinners," with impotence and gleet; unmarried persons suffering from nervous debility. Premature old age: melancholy, apathy, mental distraction, self- contempt; arising in young persons from abuse of the sexual powers; from seminal losses. Complete impotence: relaxation, flaccidity, coldness of genitalia. No sexual power or desire (Cald., Sel.). Impotence, after frequent attacks of gonorrhoea. Bad effects of suppressed gonorrhoea (Med.). Gleet, with absence of sexual desire or erections. Leucorrhoea: transparent, but staining linen yellow; passes imperceptibly from the very relaxed parts. Deficient secretion or suppression of milk in nursing women. (Asaf., Lac. c., Lac. d.); often with great sadness; says she will die. General

The most striking curative influences of this remedy are found cropping out in the male generative organs, and we may also expect much in the female.

Mental

Absent-minded and forgetful; finds it difficult to read or keep up the train of thought. Despairing sadness; keeps repeating that she will die soon.

Head

Pressure and heaviness, as if the head would fall forward. Tearing, with pressure in the temples and forehead, in the brain.

Eyes

Dilated pupils and photophobia.

Ears

Ringing in the ears, or roaring.

Nose

An odor of herring or musk before the nose continually. Aching in the dorsum of the nose relieved by pressure.

Face

Corrosive itching in either cheek. Deep tearing in the right ramus of the lower jaw, below the sockets.

Abdomen

Swelling and induration of the spleen, often with soreness, after intermittent fever. Nausea and sinking down sensation in the abdomen, constantly inclined to hold it up with the hands. Much flatulency.

Stool and Anus

Discharge of prostatic fluid when straining at stool; stools are soft, and sometimes seem inclined to re-enter the rectum. Deep fissures of the anus, often giving pain when walking. Difficulty of passing soft stools.

Sexual

Male: The sexual desire lessened, almost lost. Voluptuous fancies excite no erections. The testicles are cold, hard, swollen, and painful; penis sunk and flaccid. Impotence with gleet, specially with those who have frequently had gonorrhœa. Yellow urethral discharge. Gleet, with want of sexual desire or erection. Want of erection and sexual desire. Pollutions from irritable weakness with prostatorrhœa. Many sufferings from sexual excesses. Impotency. Female: Metrorrhagia. Transparent, almost imperceptible leucorrhœa. Generalities

General

The most effective point of attack of Agnus upon the organism is the sexual organism. It lowers sexual vitality, with corresponding mental depression and loss of nervous energy. It shows this distinctive influence in both sexes, but is more pronounced in men. Premature old age from abuse of sexual power. History of repeated gonorrhœa. A prominent remedy for sprains and strains. Gnawing itching in all parts, especially eyes. Tachycardia caused by tobacco in neurotic young men.

Mind

Sexual melancholy. Fear of death. Sadness with impression of speedy death. Absentminded, forgetful, lack of courage. Illusion of smell-herrings, musk. Nervous depression and mental forebodings.

Eyes

Pupils dilated (Bell). Itching about eyes; photophobia.

Nose

Odor of herring or musk. Aching in dorsum better pressure.

Abdomen

Mind and Disposition

Low-spirited, he fears approaching death. Melancholic and hypochondriac mood. Absent-minded.

Head

Pain in the temple, as from a blow. Heaviness in the head, and pressure, as if the head would fall forward. Pain in the vertex, as from staying in a room filled with a thick and smoky atmosphere. Tension and chilliness in the scalp, which is warm to the touch.

Eyes

Corrosive itching over and on the eyebrows, on the eyelids and under the eyes. Dilated pupils.

Ears

Roaring in the ears. Hardness of hearing.

Nose

Odor before the nose, like herrings or musk. Hard, aching pressing on the dorsum of the nose, relieved by pressure.

Face

Corrosive itching of the cheeks, under the eyes, and on the chin. Formication in the cheeks.

Mouth

Ulcers in the mouth, and on the gums. The teeth are painful, when touched by warm food or drink.

Appetite and Taste

Thirstlessness and aversion to drink. Metallic, coppery taste.

Stomach

Nausea first in the pit of the stomach, later in the stomach, with the sensation as if all the intestines were pressing downwards.

Abdomen

Swelling and induration of the spleen. Ascites. Rumbling of flatulence during sleep.

Stool and Anus

Difficulty of passing soft stools. When pressing at stool, discharge of prostatic fluid. Sensation as of subcutaneous, ulceration near the anus, only when walking. Corrosive itching of the perineum. Rhagades at the anus.

Chest

Hard pressure in the region of the sternum, especially daring a deep inspiration. Cough in the evening in bed, before going to sleep.

Upper Extremities

Hard pressure in the (right) axilla and upper arm, increased by motion and contact. Swelling of the finger joints, with arthritic, tearing pains.

Lower Extremities

Lancinating pain in the right hip-joint. Stitches in the legs, (left big toe). The feet easily turn, when walking on a stone pavement.

Generalities

Great debility. Inflammatory, rheumatic swelling of the joints. Gouty nodosities.

Fever

Pulse. Small, Slow, imperceptible. Chilliness, internal with trembling, the external skin is warm. Much chilliness, with cold hands. Heat. Flushes of burning heat, principally in the face, with cold knees in the evening in bed. Perspiration. Almost only on the hands, when walking in the open air.

Skin

Corrosive itching on different parts of the body, relieved by scratching, but it soon returns. Itching around the ulcers, in the evening.

Characteristics

As its name implies, Agnus Castus produces its chief effects in the sexual sphere, causing depression of function. General debility and depression of vital power are marked. There ire very characteristic symptoms in the mental sphere. Great sadness with a fixed idea of approaching death. This fear is not of immediate death as with Aconite , but the patient thinks it is sure to come after a while, and there is no use in doing anything. When this mental state is found after confinement and the milk fails to appear, Agn. c . is the remedy. Absent-mindedness. Drowsiness. It corresponds to lymphatic constitutions. Premature old age, with apathy and melancholy, self-contempt from sexual abuse. Nervous debility in unmarried persons. Impotence and gleet in old offenders. Among other peculiar symptoms are: Illusion of smell as of herrings; or musk; ulcers in mouth and on gums. Tearing pain in lower jaw. Toothache from hot food or drink. Swelling and induration of spleen. Rumbling of flatus during sleep. Discharge of prostatic fluid whilst straining at stool. Suppressed menses with abdominal pain. Leucorrhœa staining yellow. Sterility. Deficiency of milk, with despair of recovery. Pain as if dislocated in joints. Joints easily twisted. Rheumatic and gouty nodosities on joints.

Relations

Agnus is the only proved member of the Verbena family, though the Labiatæ or Mint family are closely allied. It is antidoted by: Camphor, Nat. mur. (headache); strong solutions of table-salt. It is followed well by: Ars., Bry., Ign., Lyc., Pul., Sul., Selen. Compare: (Leucorrhœa staining yellow), Nux, Chel., Carb. an., Kreas. Teste groups it with Mur. ac. and Hyo.

Causation

Sexual excesses. Repeated attacks of gonorrhœa or gleet. Sprains or over-lifting.

Mind

Extreme absence of mind; unable to recollect things; finds it difficult to read or keep up the train of thought. ─ Despairing sadness; low-spirited; fears of death; keeps repeating that she will soon die.

Head

A shrub growing in damp places in Southern Europe. Since Dioscorides one of the most famous medicines.
Proved by Hahnemann and his school, and published in 1841, in the Archives , by Stapf ; later proved by Helbig.

Mind

Absent-minded, reduced power of insight ; cannot recollect things.
He finds reading difficult ; has to read several things twice ; is unable to fix his attention.
Low-spirited, fears of approaching death.

Sensorium

Sight and eyes

Burning in eyes and headache from reading in evening.
Pupils widely dilated.
Dilated pupils.
Photophobia.
Looking at a fixed point relieves pain in upper head.
Tearing pains above right eye and temple, as if one had received a blow upon eye. θ Cephalalgia.
Corrosive itching over and on eyebrows and lids, and below eyes.

Hearing and ears

Ringing or roaring in ears.
Hardness of hearing.
Drawing pain in left parotid.

Smell and nose

Illusion of smell : as of herring ; musk.
Soreness and pain in left side of nose.
Hard aching pain in dorsum of nose, as if a stone was pressing there, > by pressure.

Upper face

Corrosive itching on either cheek, obliging him to scratch.
Erysipelas on left cheek, spreading from nose over face and head.
A long stitch followed by a fine pricking itching.
Formication of cheeks.

Lower face

Rending, tearing, under alveoli of right lower jaw.
Deep tearing in right ramus of lower jaw, below socket.

Teeth and gums

Toothache from warm things.
Teeth painful, when touched by warm food or drink.
Throbbing, tearing toothache in left eye-tooth, small boil near tooth, very painful to touch ; in attacks.
Ulcers on gums.

Taste, speech, tongue

Taste : metallic ; coppery ; bitter.
Tongue coated white.

Inner mouth

Mouth very dry, saliva viscid and tough, drawing out in strings.
(OBS :) Ulcers on gums and in mouth.

Palate and throat

Corrosive itching in pit of throat.

Appetite, thirst. desires, aversions

Hunger.
Relishes food, but it does not agree with him.
Lessened appetite.
Thirstlessness ; aversion to drink.

Eating and drinking

Abdomen distended after meals.
Nausea in pit of stomach after eating.
Food makes him feel uneasy and replete.
Warm food and drink cause teeth to ache.

Hiccough, belching, nausea and vomiting

The wind he brings up smells like old urine allowed to remain on clothes.
Hiccough ; inclined to get angry ; peevish.
Nausea in pit of stomach when standing ; later, qualmishness in abdomen, with a sensation as if intestines were pressing downward ; wants to support himself with his hands.
Nausea as from eating fat food. θ Checked catamenia.

Scrobiculum and stomach

Pinching in scrobiculum when sitting bent over.

Hypochondria

Aching in region of liver, < from touch.
Soreness in region of spleen.
Swelling and induration of spleen. θ Intermittent.

Abdomen and loins

Rumbling in abdomen during sleep.
Abdomen sensitive to pressure.
Incarcerated flatus.
Abdomen sore to touch.
Flatulency.
Feels as if entrails were sinking down, constantly inclined to support bowels with hands. θ Uterine complaint.
Violent, contracting bellyache, coming suddenly in morning, with bearing down. θ Suppressed menses.

Stools and rectum

Diarrhœa of children,
Chronic diarrhœa of adults.

Difficult expulsion of soft stool.

Great accumulation of wind.
Wind expelled by rectum smells like urine remaining long on clothes.

A sore feeling under skin near anus, only when walking.

Excoriated anus.
Deep rhagades or fissures of anus.

Urinary organs

Pains in bladder.
Passes more urine.
Gets up twice at night and even once during siesta.
When urinating, sometimes pain in lower abdomen, sometimes in kidneys.
Red, turbid urine, with burning and pressure in urethra.
Emission of prostatic fluid.
A yellow discharge from urethra.

Male sexual organs

Complete loss of sexual desire, penis is small, flaccid and cold.
Frequent erections, but without voluptuous thoughts.

Cough : in evening, in bed, before falling asleep ; with raising of blood, followed by copious mucus ; in paroxysms, with palpitation and nosebleed, mostly in morning ; when inhaling cold air.
Tough sputa, hanging like a rag in fauces.

Inner chest and lungs

Feeling of dryness in chest.

Heart, pulse and circulation

Palpitation ; with cough.
Slow and weak pulse, often imperceptible.

Outer chest

Pressure in region of sternum, < when breathing deeply.
Pressure in xiphoid cartilage, just above pit of stomach.

Neck and back

A creaking noise in vertebræ.
Acute, sharp stitches in coccyx, and on left side near coccyx and sacrum.
Pain in sacrum from flatus.

Upper limbs

Hard pressure in right axilla and upper arm, < from touch or motion.
Swelling of finger joints, tearing pains, arthritic nodes.
Gouty swelling of finger joints.

Lower limbs

Pain in left hip.
Thighs feel tired and swollen towards evening.

Nerves

Spasmodic complaints of hypochondriac men.

Sleep

Coma.

Anxious dreams.

Time

Night : gets up twice to urinate.

Temperature and weather

Bad effects from getting feet wet.
Warm things : teeth pain.
In bed : heat of face, coldness of knees.
Cold air : coughs when inhaling it.
Open air : hands sweat when walking.

Fever

Internal chilliness, with trembling, skin warm.
Slight chilliness towards evening, followed by heat, with headache, no thirst, slight delirium, tormenting, profuse sweat.
Chill and heat alternate.
Chilly all over, but only hands feel cold to touch.
Flushes of burning heat, mostly in face, with cold knees ; evening in bed.
Heat with coryza, thirst. θ Borborygmus.
Sweat on hands when walking in open air.
Sweats easily.

Attacks, periodicity

Sudden attacks of bellyache.

Locality and direction

Right : tearing in lower jaw ; aching in liver ; pressure in axilla and arm ; lancinating in hip joint.
Left : drawing in parotid gland ; painful soreness in side of nose ; erysipelas on cheek ; soreness in spleen ; stitches side of sacrum and coccyx.
Above downward : nausea and qualmishness.

Sensations

Bruised feeling all over.
As if head would fall forward ; as if one had received a blow on eye ; headache as from staying in a room with thick atmosphere ; pain in temple as from a blow ; as if a stone was pressing in dorsum of nose ; a long stitch followed by a fine pricking itching in face ; as if intestines were pressing downward ; voice as if passing through wool ; pains as if luxated.
Pain : in left side of nose ; in bladder ; in testicles ; in sacrum ; in left hip.
Burning : in eyes ; in eyelids ; in nose ; in throat ; in mouth ; in urethra ; in bladder ; in skin.
Lancinating : in right hip joint ; in soles of feet.
Stitches : in head ; in face ; in eyes ; in ears ; in rectum ; in coccyx ; near sacrum ; in legs ; in left big toe ; in skin.
Tearing : in head ; above right eye and temple ; in scalp ; under alveoli of right lower jaw ; deep in ramus of lower jaw ; toothache ; in finger joints ; in feet and toes.
Gnawing : in different parts.
Rending : under alveoli of right lower jaw ; in feet and toes.
Pinching : in scrobiculum.
Aching pain : in dorsum of nose ; in region of liver.
Soreness : in left side of nose ; in region of spleen ; under skin near anus.
Biting pains : in outer head.
Drawing pain : in left parotid ; along spermatic cords ; in abdomen.
Pressing : headache ; in neck ; in temples, forehead and brain ; in urethra ; in region of sternum ; in xiphoid cartilage ; in right axilla and upper arm.
Throbbing : toothache.
Contractive pain : in head above temples ; in abdomen.
Tension : in scalp.
Dulness : in head.
Tired feeling : in thighs ; in legs.
Heaviness : of head.
Swollen feeling : in thighs.
Biting itching : on scalp.
Corrosive itching : on eyebrows and lids and beneath eyes ; on cheeks ; in pit of throat ; of perineum.
Itching : of male genitals ; on different parts of body ; around ulcers.
Formication : of cheeks.
Heat : burning ; flushes ; with coryza.
Chilliness : in scalp ; internal ; all over.
Coldness : of knees.
Dryness : of mouth ; in chest.
Stitches : head, face, eyes, ears, rectum and skin.

Tissues

Inflammatory, rheumatic swelling of joints.
Gouty nodosities.

Touch. passive motion. injuries

May be indicated in bruises or wounds.
Sprains and luxations of joints.
Strains from lifting a little too much.
Prevents excoriation from walking.
Pressure : relieves aching on dorsum of nose ; abdomen sensitive therefrom.
Touch : aggravates toothache ; aching in liver ; abdomen sore ; pressure in axilla and arm.
Must scratch : in corrosive itching of cheeks.

Skin

Pungent odor exhaled from him, gives him a dulness and headache, followed by vomiting and trembling.
Gnawing or itching on different parts of body, relieved temporarily by scratching.
Itching around ulcers, in evening.
Yellow tint of the skin.

Stage of life, constitution

Lymphatic constitution. θ Agalactia.
Premature old age, in young persons from abuse of sexual powers, melancholy, apathy, mental distraction, self-contempt, general debility, frequent loss of spermatic fluid.
Unmarried persons suffering from nervous debility. θ Cephalalgia.
"Old sinners," with impotence and gleet.

Relations

The only one proved from the large family of Verbenaceæ. Helbig calls attention to the nearly related family of Labiatæ, from which we have several valuable remedies.
Antidotes to Agn. cast . : Camphor., Natr. mur . (the headache), strong solution of table-salt.
After Agnus are useful : Arsen., Bryon., Ignat., Lycop., Pulsat., Sulphur, Selen . (impotence).

Lecture

This wonderful remedy is often overlooked. It should come to mind for old sufferers who are broken from sexual excesses and secret vice.

The pale sickly and sad mortals who lament over their misspent life. It is good for both sexes.

Sexual

Sexual weakness; relaxation of parts. Perversion of all the functions.

A woman who indulged extensively in secret vice, found after marriage that she had no sexual thrill, was cured by this remedy.

Later she was confined and no milk came in her mammae, again Agnus started the belated milk at the end of three weeks.

When the milk ceases after it has started, or becomes scanty when the above history is known, and the woman is said, this remedy will, if not opposed, most likely cure.

It cures uterine haemorrhage, and restores suppressed menses in young women with a history. The vagina is much relaxed, there is often prolapsus, and there is a copious white-of-egg-like leucorrhoea.

But the pitiful, woebegone young man, heart-broken over his early life, now finds himself newly married, and impotent.

He has had gonorrhoea; he has lived in excesses, and now suffers from relaxed and cold genitalia, emissions, prostatic discharge at stool.

His young and beautiful wife excites no erection, though only recently he had a clandestine success, and he has morning erections but no more.

Out of the above cause and condition come many distressing symptoms.

Mind

Loss of memory, despair, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, fear and peevishness. These patients suffer from headaches, photophobia and nervous symptoms too numerous to mention. Formication of the skin.

Tearing pains of head, face and teeth. All but the simplest food disorders the stomach, and he complains much of nausea. His muscles are flabby.

He is anemic, and his glands are enlarged, especially, the spleen. lie is growing increasingly flatulent.

The abdominal viscera hang down as a weight. There is a growing weakness of the rectum and constipation, and he presses hard at stool, which often fails and slips back, like Silica, Sanic and Thuja.

The stool is large and hard. Itching, smarting at the anus, noisy flatus of a urinous odor. Excoriated anus. He soon takes on a hacking cough and night sweats.

The limbs are tired and cold. He is sensitive to cold, and wants to remain quiet. Exertion and motion intensify his complaints.

He has been to many advisers, and they have told him he has Neurasthenia. He must have Agnus castus.
